We recently asked people on our Instagram their first experience with a restored Land Rover defender . An answer that consistently stood out was taking a safari Land Rover Defender adventure; in fact, many said this experience made them fall in love with the Defender in the first place.

Tropical (safari) Roof on defender 110 (non-series)

Hi all, Has anyone made or sells a tropical roof for a defender 110. The double roof and vent concept is really appealing in my situation with no A/C and having the sun beat down on me in Florida. I know I can insulate the roof (currently have no headlining in it), but the combination of the vent and a 1-2 in air gap from the tropical roof should make a large improvement. Although, at what cost.... I guess the same thing could be achieved with a roof rack with some sort of floor (sheet metal or solar or something). Anyways, just wanted to know if someone had any information on the matter. Its an interesting concept to me since I don't really want to go through the trouble or expense of putting in AC.  

110 Safari tops were available from 1983 to 1984 from the factory. They were essentially a 109 tropical sheet fitted to the early 110 top with ribs. All the ones I've seen had the pop up vents that were the same as a 109.

For what it is worth, though I cannot personally verify, the Land Rover literature claims that the “modern” roof material is actually more heat-blocking than the old safari tops.

I have a white ribbed roof from an ‘85 110 if you want to add a safari roof…. I would imagine that just adding the “safari” portion to a ribbed roof would not be difficult

When I re-did the safari roof on my series, I left the sun sheet polished aluminum and painted the roof top and sides Limestone. No idea if polished was better than Limestone, but that's what I did.  

With just the safari roof panel alone won't help that much without having the vents underneath it installed? I mean it would block some of the direct heat(laser beams) but you still gotta punch the holes in the actual roof panel for the pop-up vents to enjoy the full benefits of the "Safari roof".  

There were original series safari roofs delivered without the vents... may have been a NAS only, but I've seen them first hand.  

Frank from VT had a 1983 110 at the 75th with a tropical roof that he added before it was painted. Looked really good. He didn't add the 4 vents, just the sunshield and said it was sourced from a 109.  

A full Trop roof includes the vents. Often called safari roof by mistake. Some trucks had only the sun screen. Both work. Some pickups had just the screen since vents weren't used on pickups. Should be possible to insulate any roof type. Anything is better than nothing.

It's a beauty and thanks for coming into this thread. Sorry Frank, for some reason remembered it to be a 1983, when really it is a 1986. Anyway, the rear hatch was also a work of art. Good seeing you again at the 75th.

Wow @vtlandrover that is gorgeous. Seriously stunning. Thank you for sharing those installation photos, it’s a great reference on how they actually fit together. I love the styling of the tropical roof, adds a lot of character.  

Would love to see the 127 roof in process and completed. Is it a HCPU crew cab or a Foley Station Wagon? Rover didn't produce any Trop top CC's that I know of. The rear roof profile is totally different from a SW. The sunscreen they used for the 109 Pickup would be a good guide. Good luck! I'm used to seeing Santana trucks with sunscreen only. No blisters to make room to open vents. Vents are better than none. More are better than fewer. I put roof vents in the front doors of my 88 and 109 a long time ago. Some NADA Series trucks had full Trop tops. The lack of that is the main diff between standard SIII NADA 88's and full Station Wagon spec.  

Find a 109 with tropical roof, pull your 110 top, or get a ribbed one if needed, then commence the swap. No brainer...

PRODUCT VNR (LONG EDIT) THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER

A distinctive silhouette makes the New Defender instantly recognisable, with minimal front and rear overhangs providing excellent approach and departure angles. Land Rover’s designers re‑envisioned familiar Defender trademarks for the 21st century, giving the new 4x4 a purposeful upright stance and Alpine light windows in the roof, while retaining the side‑hinged rear tailgate and externally‑mounted spare wheel that make the original so identifiable.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL: THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER

The New Defender is respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it. This is a new Defender for a New Age. Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable – a visually compelling 4x4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment.

The stripped‑back personality of the original Defender has been embraced inside, where structural elements and fixings usually hidden from view have been exposed, with the emphasis on simplicity and practicality. Innovative features include a dash‑mounted gear shifter to accommodate an optional centre front ‘jump’ seat, which provides three‑abreast seating across the front like early Land Rovers.

PURPOSEFUL INTERIOR: THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER

As a result, the Defender 110 offers five, six or 5+2 seating configurations, with a loadspace behind the second‑row seats of up to 1,075‑litres, and as much as 2,380‑litres when the second row is folded. The Defender 90 will be able to accommodate six occupants in a vehicle the length of a compact family hatchback

User‑friendly features include practical touches and advanced technological innovations. Durable rubberised flooring shrugs off the spills of daily adventures and once‑in‑a‑lifetime expeditions, providing a brush or wipe clean interior. An optional full‑length Folding Fabric Roof provides an open‑top feel. It also allows passengers in the second‑row seats of the Defender 110 to stand up when parked to provide the full safari experience**.

THE NEW DEFENDER ‑ REINVENTING A DESIGN ICON

The definition of durability

TESTED TO EXTREMES: THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER

Land Rover’s new purpose‑engineered D7x (for extreme) architecture is based on a lightweight aluminium monocoque construction to create the stiffest body structure Land Rover has ever produced. It is three times stiffer than traditional body‑on‑frame designs, providing perfect foundations for the fully independent air or coil sprung suspension and supports the latest electrified powertrains.

The New Defender has been through more than 62,000 tests for engineering sign‑off, while the chassis and body architecture have been engineered to withstand Land Rover’s Extreme Event Test procedure – repeated and sustained impacts, above and beyond the normal standard for SUV and passenger cars.

During development testing, prototype models have covered millions of kilometres across some of the harshest environments on earth, ranging from the 50‑degree heat of the desert and sub 40‑degree cold of the Arctic to altitudes of 10,000ft in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

A world‑class expert off and on‑road

A transformational breadth of capability sets New Defender apart. Permanent all‑wheel drive and a twin‑speed automatic gearbox, centre differential and optional Active Locking Rear Differential ensure it has all the hardware required to excel in the soft sand of the desert, the freezing tundra of the arctic and everywhere in between.

Configurable Terrain Response debuts on New Defender, allowing experienced off‑roaders to fine‑tune individual vehicle settings to perfectly suit the conditions, while inexperienced drivers can let the system detect the most appropriate vehicle settings for the terrain, using the intelligent Auto function.

The new body architecture provides ground clearance of 291mm and world‑class off‑road geometry, giving the 110 approach, breakover and departure angles of 38, 28 and 40 degrees (Off‑Road height) respectively. Its maximum wading depth of 900mm is supported by a new Wade programme in the Terrain Response 2 system, which ensures drivers can ford deep water with complete confidence.

On dry land, Land Rover’s advanced ClearSight Ground View technology helps drivers take full advantage of Defender’s all‑conquering capability by showing the area usually hidden by the bonnet, directly ahead of the front wheels, on the central touchscreen.

OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY: THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90

As a result, the New Defender redefines breadth of capability, raising the threshold for both off‑road ruggedness and on‑road comfort. It can negotiate crowded city streets as effortlessly as climbing mountains, crossing deserts and withstanding freezing temperatures. Its carefully honed handling delivers both a rewarding drive and first‑class long‑haul comfort across all terrains.

THE NEW DEFENDER ‑ REDEFINING BREADTH OF CAPABILITY

Power and efficiency ª

MHEV – THE NEW DEFENDER

A choice of advanced petrol and cleaner diesel engines ensure New Defender has the power, control and efficiency for any environment, while a Plug‑in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrain will join the range next year providing the prospect of silent EV‑only progress.

At launch, the petrol line‑up comprises a four‑cylinder P300 and a powerful six‑cylinder P400, featuring efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology. Alternatively, customers can choose from a pair of four‑cylinder diesels – the D200 and powerful D240 – both of which deliver fuel economy of 37.2mpg (7.6 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 199g/km (NEDC equivalent).

Innovative engineering solutions support the efficiency drive, including a flat underbody which both optimises aerodynamic performance (as low as 0.38Cd) and protecting the vehicle’s underbody.

21st century technology

New Defender is as technologically advanced as it is durable. It introduces Land Rover’s new Pivi Pro infotainment system. The next‑generation touchscreen is intuitive and user‑friendly, requiring few inputs to perform frequently used tasks, while its always‑on design guarantees almost instant responses.

In addition, the New Defender takes Software‑Over‑The‑Air (SOTA) technology to a new level, with 14 individual modules capable of receiving remote updates. By downloading data while customers are asleep at home or in far‑flung locations, the New Defender will get better with age: as electronic updates cascade down to the vehicle immediately, without delay and with no need to visit a Land Rover retailer.(b)

We've embraced Defender's stunning capability and minimalistic, functional interior to reinvent the icon for the 21st century. New Defender gives us the licence to do things differently, to push the boundaries and do the unthinkable, without ever losing the character and authenticity of the original. Safari Camp Workhorse

This 2006 packed a lot of history in its decade + in Kenya.  

Its journey from Italy to Kenya started in 2005 for work on safari camps in the north, in Meru county, and then down in the northern Mara.  While it isn’t known exactly what this vehicle was used for, it can be surmised by the fact that it is a left hand drive vehicle with only 50K kilometers on the original engine, that it was used primarily for surveying the area and working on the camps..  When Safari Land Rovers purchased the vehicle, the engine was in good shape but the bushes, joints and interior were pretty beat up.  See pics below from when it was purchased. 

After stripping the vehicle down to its shell and removing all dents and stripping the old paint from the vehicle, the Safari Land Rover team built the truck back up keeping an on authenticity, while also making it a more comfortable ride. 

As is the case with many Kenyan vehicles, due to the lack of humidity and no salt on the roads, the undercarriage is in pristine shape.  To be safe, the undercarriage was stripped and recoated to provide additional protection for its North American journey.  It was clear that Canada would be the home for this vehicle since the US only allows in Defenders that are 25 years old, vs Canada which considers vehicles just 15 years old a classic.

There's not another vehicle in North America with this much history with original engine power.  The TD5 is renowned for running strong, well past 500K kilometers.  With just 50K KM on the engine, there are many more adventures to be had.

Safety Devices 8 point multi-point bolt-in full external/internal roll cage. Mounts to the chassis at 6 external points. Internal B hoop mounts at 2 points.

Front legs mount through front wings down to chassis outrigger. B hoop mounts to the vehicle floor above chassis outrigger.

C hoop ties in to rear door shut assembly. D hoop ties to rear chassis cross member.

Please note that models between 1983 - 1988 had three raised ribs on the roof approx 22mm (7/8') tall. This kind of roof does not work with our external roll cages as the hoops will clash with them. Nor will it fit if the rear seat box is stepped in the rear corner.

• Finished roll cage provided with black powdercoat paint finish unless specified otherwise. Other colours available: grey, blue, silver, white and red. There is a surcharge for colours other than black.
• Roll cage can be provided unpainted by special request (no reduction in price).
• Total weight of roll cage including fitting kit: 124.5kgs.
• Installation time: approx 20 hours. (2 people, 1 day).
