Kaito KA500 Emergency Radio Review

' src=

The Kaito KA500 can be charged using solar, crank, or USB. The radio can also charge a cellphone or other USB device. It includes a reading light, a flashlight, and a flashing red light.

This small versatile radio lets you listen to AM, FM, NOAA Emergency and Shortwave (HAM). It does not broadcast. This is a good multi-function weather radio. Available colors include Blue, Green, Red, Black or Yellow.

We recommend the KA500 over the KA500IP. The Kaito KA700 might be a good (but more expensive) alternative. It has a slightly larger solar panel and a 2000mAh NiMH battery instead of the smaller KA500 600mAh battery.

Kaito KA500 Radio Review

Construction: The feel is not as sturdy as we had hoped. We are worried that it might not hold up to extended camping conditions. If it is kept indoors it seems like it will work ok.

There are a number of reviews on Amazon indicating that the build quality is not awesome. So far nothing has broken, cracked or failed on ours.

Radio Reception: It supports AM, FM, NOAA Weather band and Shortwave (HAM).

Tuning the radio is manual and requires some practice to get right, especially if you have trouble reading small print. This is a common problem in small emergency radios.

The antenna is sort of small, and our reception indoors was ok but not excellent. Audio quality is functional, not outstanding, but comparable to other emergency radios in the price range.

Kaito KA500 LED Reading Light

Lights: Both the KA500 and KA700 have 3 LED lights. There’s a flashing red LED light, an LED light bar “reading lamp” on the back side of the solar panel, and an “LED flashlight”. None of these are extremely bright, but they will light up a dark room.

Power: It does have GREAT power features, the Solar charger, (3) AA batteries and crank options are excellent if you are stuck without AC power for an extended period.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

I agree to be sent email.

Kaito KA500 Emergency Radio Review

Based on other reviews the runtime from Solar and Charging is inconsistent. We did not experience those problems. Test your unit before you have an emergency so you know what to expect.

Kaito KA500 PROS

The Kaito KA500 has multiple power sources – internal 2000mah battery, (3) optional AA batteries, crank, USB and Solar. The NiMH battery is replaceable, and the unit can charge a smartphone or power other USB devices such as an Nitecore CI4 battery charger.

It receives AM, FM, HAM (Shortwave SW1 and SW2), and NOAA, and has three light options – emergency, reading, and flashlight. It is lightweight, and it worked right out of the box.

Kaito KA500 CONS

The KA500 it is not waterproof or impact resistant, and cannot handle heat over 130F (54.4C).

The lights are not quite bright enough for us to comfortably read a book. The text on the unit is TINY so those of us with reading challenges might need a magnifying glass to read it.

Tuning for AM, FM, and shortwave is manual and you need to practice to use it well. It does not broadcast radio, or include Bluetooth or MP3 player features.

NOTE: For shortwave reception, it is recommended to use built-in or AA batteries because the adapter generates noise that will interfere with the reception.

Kaito KA500 Antenna

The fixed telescoping antenna for the KA500 is not awesome. If you want to receive Shortwave you will need a longer antenna.

The Kaito T-1 radio Antenna is an optional rollup a 23ft 3.5mm jack antenna. The antenna does work (we tested it). Note there are other 3.5mm jack antennas and any should work.

Kaito KA500 Optional Accessories

  • Antenna Kaito T-1 Radio Antenna to improve shortwave (HAM) reception
  • Case Kaito RC500 EVA Hardshell Case for the KA500 o
  • Replacement Battery KA500 600mAh replacement battery pack for the KA500
  • AC Adapter AC Adapter for KA500

Kaito KA500 Questions and Answers

Q. What if I break the KA500 fixed built in antenna? A. The 3.5mm jack with ANY 3.5mm headset can act as an antenna. The Kaito T-1 radio Antenna is a rollup 23ft 3.5mm jack antenna is another option.

Q. Can you replace the KA500 battery pack? A. Yes and no. The KA500, KA550, KA600 and KA500IP uses this Kaito battery pack . A picture of the KA500 battery pack is below. The KA700 uses 18650 batteries

Kaito KA500, KA550, KA600 replacement battery

Q. Does the Kaito KA500 have a carry case? A. The unit does not include a carry case. You can purchase a Kaito RC500 EVA Hardshell Case .

Q. Is Kaito KA500 waterproof? A. No, the KA500, KA350, KA600 and KA700 are NOT waterproof. There appears to be Kaito knockoff that is IPX4 (only protects from water spray) the Emergency crank radio 5000 (we have NOT tested it).

Note: we have been unable to find any handheld radio that is water resistant (IPX6 or better) that has shortwave, AM/FM and NOAA. You can find AM/FM/NOAA or Shortwave/GMRS but a combo unit remains elusive.

Q. What country is Kaito from? A. Kaito is a partly American Company. The radios are assembled in China (from the outside of the box). The box says “Made in China”.

3 Alternatives to the Kaito KA500

There are alternative radios that provide IPX5 waterproof rating, but the few we found do not include the shortwave reception . Shortwave or HAM radio reception would be important in a longer term disaster.

Sangean PR-D9W

The Sangean PR-D9W is a pure emergency radio with excellent reception for AM, FM, and NOAA. It does not have crank or solar, but can use rechargeable AA batteries or regular AA batteries. It does not receive shortwave and is not waterproof. We have not tested it.

KAYINOW Water Resistant Hand Crank Emergency Weather Radio

The Kayinow is a multifunction IPX5 water resistant radio , with an integrated 5000mah battery. It is powered by a dynamo hand crank, batteries and solar panel. This radio can act as a Bluetooth wireless speaker and USB charger for a cell phone.

The sound quality and reception are not as good as the Sangean, but it is comparable to the KA500. It does not receive Shortwave. We have not tested it.

C.Crane CCRadio

C.Crane CCRadio 3 receives AM, FM, NOAA, Shortwave and Bluetooth and has a  patented Twin-Coil Ferrite AM Antenna. The main reason we are listing it is the performance of the AM and FM reception, which is exceptional. We have not tested this model but the C.Crane are very reliable.

It uses D cell batteries (not included) which we do not prefer, and has no crank, solar or internal rechargeable battery. There is a clock, alarm, sleep timer, headphone jack, adjustable display light and AC power cord. The Crane is NOT waterproof.

My wife Sandy showed me this review for me to look over.

I think it is important that people know that the Ham bands on shortwave need a specific type of receiver for those bands. Ham radio takes a full AM modulated wave and removes half of it before being transmitted. Either Upper Side Band (USB) or Lower Side Band (LSB), This is know as Single Side Band operation or SSB . By this means they are able to reduce the amount of bandwidth used and make more bandwidth available to others. Radios not so equipped to receive USB or LSB can receive the ham radio transmissions but they won’t be intelligible. They can still receive CW (Continuous Wave) aka morse code on general short wave.

Here is a Link for a Radio that is SSB capable: https://www.amazon.com/Tecsun-Digital-PL330-Worldband-Receiver/dp/B0921HN6QM Another thing that makes this radio appealing to me is it has an external antenna jack.

and here is a link for the ham bands that are available: https://ccrane.com/ssb-frequency-lists/

In closing , if or when the TSHTF I personally am inclined to listen to reports from individuals from all over the country rather than a single source high powered state owned- transmitter as an information source.

If the power or internet go down this will be my source for information.

It is better to have and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Kaito KA500L LITHIUM Handheld Radio + Reading Lamp with 4-way Powered Emergency AM/FM/SW NOAA Weather Alert Solar and Hand Crank

This is the improved lithium version of this product*.

A perfect radio for emergencies and disasters, it comes with all the features that you need in any emergency situation. It comes with a High-quality AC type brushless generator.

  • The solar panel powers the radio by itself and charges the built-in batteries as well.
  • To maximize the sunlight's rays, the solar panel is designed to tilt with the suns position to receive the energy during the day time.

The newly released Kaito Voyager KA500 is a sister product of Kaito's widely praised emergency radios KA007, KA008 and KA009. With its revolutionary design and versatile functions, it's an ideal companion for emergency preparedness purposes, outdoor activities as well as traveling. Specifically designed for emergency situations, the KA500 offers different methods to power itself. Those methods include AC/DC adapter (not included), three AA batteries (not included), the built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery which can be recharged from the AC adapter, by hand, by solar panel or by a PC, and the dynamo hand crank which not only can recharge the built-in battery but provides power even when no battery is installed. At the heart of the KA500, there is an internal generator that recharges the internal replaceable Ni-MH battery pack and powers the radio, flashlight and reading lamp. Also, by plugging your cell phone into the jack on the back of the radio, you can use the crank to power your phone. Not only that, this radio also features a USB port, which you can use either to charge your radio with a PC or charge other electronic gadgets with the hand crank. You can use the KA500 to receive a wide range of broadcasting including AM, FM, shortwave and NOAA weather stations. The 7-weather channels are pre-programmed and numbered from 1-7, you can easily and conveniently tune into the stations by turning the switch, no more guess work involved. Compared with any other solar-powered emergency radios, the KA500 has its unique 180-degree adjustable solar panel, which can maximize sunlight exposure to power up the radio or charge the internal Ni-MH batteries. On the back side of the solar panel, there is a super-bright 5-LED reading lamp. Standard accessories include earphones, user manual.

Customer Reviews

Bought this radio earlier this year, Immediately took it to some of my farther from town but not the toolies hunting and camping spots to try it out. There were a few times where reception was bad but I was pretty out there, but I was able to prop it against the antenna of my truck radio or my trucks cb antenna and it worked great. Louder than expected, easy operation light enough for my pack, and never a dead battery thanks to the solar panel.

KA500 LOCATION OF CONTROLS

Kaito KA500 Voyager 5-way Powered Solar Power Radio FIG-1

This radio is designed for multiple power resources.

Five Ways to Power the Kaito Voyager

  • Crank Power (Rechargeable Batteries) The rechargeable battery pack is already installed in the radio and will power all radio and flashlight functions. To get started, open the battery compartment and simply plug the small white plug attached to the rechargeable batteries into the slot to the left. All you need to do is turn the crank handle for about one minute and it will generate ample power. On the front of the unit, the bottom right switch should be set to set the BATT/DC.
  • AA Batteries To use AA batteries, open the battery compartment on the back of the unit and insert 3 AA batteries making sure the polarity is correct. Set the Power Selector to BATT/DC. To turn off the radio, set the power selector to OFF position.

Kaito KA500 Voyager 5-way Powered Solar Power Radio FIG-3

  • AC Power You can also power the radio by using an AC Adapter (optional) and plugging it into any standard electric outlet and then plug the adapter into the ‘DC IN’ jack on the back of the unit. You can also charge the internal rechargeable batteries with this method. The DC charge voltage is 4.5V 6.0V DC, the negative as shown. It is highly recommended to charge the battery 8 hours or less for the first time use. You can order an adaptor directly from the Kaito website: http://www.kaitousa.com or call 1-866-524-8676 ,(909) 628 6088
  • Power via computer USB cable The Voyager has a direct USB jack on the back of the unit under the rubber flap on the bottom right. You can connect the radio to your computers USB port with any standard USB cable set. Then set the Charging Selector on the back of the unit to “IN”, and set the Power Selector to SOLAR/CRANK, and the radio will operate and charge the built-in battery of the USB power.

Power Indicators

When the rechargeable battery power is high, the HI green light on the front of the Voyager is on. When the battery power is low, the LOW red light is on. When you see this, it is recommended to charge the rechargeable batteries.

  • Crank Power When the battery level indicator is RED, the rechargeable Ni-MH batteries are low. Crank the handle for 1-2 minutes until the HI LED turns Green. Note: Set the power selector to OFF when crank charging the battery. This mode will charge the battery most efficiently.

Kaito KA500 Voyager 5-way Powered Solar Power Radio FIG-4

  • a) Charge In: Select ‘IN’ switch on the back of the unit to charge the rechargeable Ni-MH batteries from your computers USB port. ( The max charging time is 6 Hours)
  • b) Charge Out: Select ‘OUT’ switch to charge your cellphone, iPod or Players via the Voyager’s built-in USB port. USB devices such as iPod,  or Blackberry can plug directly into the unit’s USB port. For other cell phone models, use one of the power tips that come with the unit that charge most popular cell phone models. Once you have plugged your phone or other digital device into the USB, simply turn the crank handle for a few minutes to charge it. Note: For Cell Phones and iPod/MP3’s, it is recommended that if you want to crank charge them, you do so while there is still some battery power. It is more difficult to crank charge these units when the battery is completely dead. Charge out
  • AC Adaptor Charging Plug the AC adaptor into the outlet and connect the end to the radio’s input jack (DC IN) on the back of the unit. You can use any of Voyager’s functions while it is plugged in and charging. Note: For faster charging, set the Power Selector to OFF. Unplug the adaptor from the radio when not in use to avoid overcharging of the rechargeable batteries.

Charging Your Cellphone or Portable Digital Device

Charging the cellphone with the radio.

Step 1: Connecting your cellphone Take the included cable and connect the USB end directly to the Voyager’s USB Port on the back. The other end of the cable will take one of the included Power Tips that fit your phone’s power jack. If you have a USB phone like a Blackberry, you should have the USB Cable that comes with your phone. For iPod/MP3, since the standard charging method is USB, simply use the same cable that you plug into your computer’s USB port.

Step 2: Select Power Out Select the power selector to the OUT position on the back of the unit.

Step 3. Select from 3 ways to power your device

  • A. Cranking to charge
  • B. Solar Panel charge. Set the Kaito solar and crank weather band radio under direct sunlight (best method) and the solar panel will start to charge the cellphone as soon as it is in the sun.
  • C. Use the optional AC adaptor. Connect the adaptor to the wall outlet and it will start to charge your cellphone immediately.

The supplied cellphone Power Tips and the phones they fit are listed below:

Kaito KA500 Voyager 5-way Powered Solar Power Radio FIG-6

Charging via computer

The included Power Tips and Charging Cable allows you to charge your phone directly from your computer. Take the cable, and select the proper cellphone tip that fits your cellphone. Hurricane prepare

Be Prepared for the Worst

Life is full of uncertainties, emergencies often occur unexpectedly and natural disasters sometimes strike without any warning signs. The least we could do is to be prepared by having important emergency supplies readily available, making a plan for yourself and your loved ones, and being informed. Such simple and easy actions will make all the difference should our worst fear be realized. With Kaito's revolutionary Voyager KA500 6-way powered, multi-functional emergency radio, together we can make a difference!

A radio makes a world of difference

Over the years, Kaito has proudly supplied millions of radios and lanterns to the State Department, the United States Army, the United Nations, American Red Cross and other government agencies and NGOs for their humanitarian relief efforts. It's hard to believe, but often times a radio is the only way to connect with the outside world in some parts of the globe, and radio broadcasting has become an important and effective tool helping the US and its allies build strong relationship with the locals and educate them to stand up against conflicts and extremism, which in return makes our troops and diplomats safer and more successful in their missions.

*No Endorsement of Kaito by the US Department of Defense, Department of State, United Nations, American Red Cross or by their personnel is intended or implied.

Kaito voyager KA500

Very cool radio. All the features like the ability to charge a mobile phone with the hand cranked dynamo are impressive in such a compact package. Being able to run the unit off so many power options is great too. Solar, rechargeable “built in” battery pack, alkaline, USB etc. the lights are ok but I didn’t expect a high end light to be built into an affordable device like this. I like the fact that the battery pack is easily replaceable, I’ll be ordering a back up very soon. I don’t know why I waited so long to get one.

Very satisfied under normal usage. Hopefully same if necessity warrants.

Powerful for its size, clear reception, with a variety of features.

Great Buy and feature rich

This unit out of the box was as described and very good quality. Easy to use, no learning curve
