With 10 million albums sold, a reputation for shirtlessness, and countless arenas booked solid, how could JLS go wrong? The answer is they can't. The foursome whizzed their way through their string of hits at the O2 in London, beaming and bouncing all the way.

The set included their biggest singles, "Everybody in Love" and "Beat Again," although it was sometimes hard to hear them over the screaming girls. The arena is massive but they've got the personality and showmanship to fill the place up. Aston kept the crowd excited with his backflips, but Oritsé, JB, and Marvin got their turns in the spotlight, too. They really made an effort to get the audience involved.

There was lots of chatting and banter between the boys, and at one point, they whipped out the stools and got some girls from the crowd up on stage with them. The show was a whirlwind of lights, costume changes, and theatrics, but the guys have genuine talent to back up the spectacle. The story has a bittersweet ending since JLS won't be back for more, but they certainly give a new meaning to going out with a bang. If they were to reunite, you can bet there'd be plenty of people, including me, who'd go running back for more.

Multi BRIT and MOBO Award winning boy band JLS are set to embark on a mammoth UK and Ireland comeback tour. Following a seven year hiatus Aston, Marvin, Orits é and JB will bring the ‘Beat Again’ tour to The O2.

Famed for their impressive live draw, the band have played The O2 arena a staggering sixteen times and sold over 1.4 million tickets in the UK alone. Speaking of their highly anticipated return JLS said “ We are so excited to be working together as a group again. We ’ ve always been like family, and now we feel that this is the right time for us to get back on stage and perform in front of our loyal fans. Even though it ’ s been 7 years, you can be sure that it ’ s going to be as high energy as ever ”.

Since the band’s inception in 2007, JLS reimagined the modern boyband and made their mark on British music through their inimitable soulful, RnB, pop sound underpinned by highly stylised choreography. Collectively JLS have amassed five Number One singles with their instantly recognisable chart hits ‘Beat Again’, ‘Everybody In Love’, ‘The Club Is Alive’, ‘Love You More’ and ‘She Makes Me Wanna’.

Having carved out their own niche as a mid-late noughties mainstay, the band return to the spotlight following a record breaking career. They sold over six million records and four multi-platinum albums and their self titled debut went straight to Number One and has since sold over a million copies in the UK.

The band are two time BRIT winners, having won Best British Breakthrough and Best British Single with ‘Beat Again’, which was also named the fastest selling debut single of 2009. As well as their huge commercial success and consistently dominating the pop charts, the band made a massive impact on urban music culture with five MOBO Awards and three Urban Music Award wins highlighting the astronomic affect their music had in resonating in both pop and RnB music realms.

The tour is an opportunity for JLS fans across the country to come together to enjoy the hits which continuously soundtracked the British charts for seven years running.

See Jennifer Lopez's 6 Colorful Engagement Rings (Including Pink, Green and Blue Diamonds!)

Jennifer Lopez received two colorful diamond rings from her estranged husband Ben Affleck, whom she filed for divorce from in August 2024 after two years of marriage

Ariana Quihuiz is a contributing writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2022. Her work has also appeared in Brides.

Jennifer Lopez has worn some jaw-dropping engagement rings over the years.

The Hustlers star has been engaged six times , with four of those proposals ending in marriage. Early in her career, Lopez was married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998 and backup dancer Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003. After breaking off her engagement with actor Ben Affleck in 2004, the singer went on to marry singer-songwriter Marc Anthony . He popped the question with an 8.5-carat blue diamond and the pair were married for 10 years.

In a tour video diary from June 2019, the singer opened up about her previous marriages and shared that she doesn’t “really count” her first two trips down the aisle .

“I’ve been married three times: once was nine months and once was 11 months. So I don’t really count those,” Lopez said. “I was married to Marc for 10 years with the kids. I was very young the first two times I tried to get married.”

She added, “It seems like in this life you’re always surrounded by people so you’re never lonely but it’s very lonely ... So I felt like if I got married then I would always have somebody but that’s not how life works. That’s not how it goes, a bad reason to get married.”

In 2022, Lopez got engaged to Affleck for a second time when he proposed with a rare green diamond engagement ring. The pair tied the knot in a small Las Vegas ceremony later that year before exchanging vows in a larger Georgia wedding. However, after months of marital strain, Lopez filed for divorce on Aug. 20 — exactly two years after the second ceremony.

Here’s everything to know about Jennifer Lopez’s engagement rings.

In 1997, Lopez married her first husband, Noa . He popped the question with a marquise-shaped diamond set on a gold band. Lopez and the model-waiter were married for 11 months before finalizing their divorce in January 1998.

Lopez and backup dancer Judd first met on the set of her 2000 music video for “Love Don’t Cost A Thing.” He proposed to the singer with an emerald-cut diamond set on a yellow-gold pavé band.

On Sept. 29, 2001, the couple tied the knot at a private residence in Calabasas, Calif. Lopez filed for divorce a year later in July 2002, and the dissolution of their marriage was finalized in January 2003.

After meeting on the set of Gigli , Affleck proposed to Lopez for the first time with a 6-carat radiant-cut pink diamond ring from Harry Winston. The custom ring featured two white accent diamonds and was estimated to be worth $2.5 million . Lopez later revealed that Affleck also had the word “sing” engraved on her ring .

In a November 2002 interview, Lopez told Diane Sawyer that Affleck’s proposal was “traditional, but also in a very spectacular way, as of course Ben would do it ... it was very, very beautiful.”

The pair were meant to wed in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Sept. 14, 2003, but called off the ceremony four days before the wedding because of media attention. However, they didn’t officially call it quits until January 2004. Harry Winston reacquired Lopez’s pink engagement ring in February 2005, and the sparkler was put on sale.

Blue diamond ring from Marc Anthony

Shortly after calling off her engagement to Affleck, Lopez reconnected with her ex-boyfriend Anthony, and they dated for six months before tying the knot. The couple wed in June 2004 in a private ceremony at Lopez's home in Beverly Hills.

The Marry Me star’s engagement ring from Harry Winston featured an 8.5-carat radiant-cut blue diamond as its center stone and baguette-cut accent diamonds.

Lopez later told PEOPLE about their wedding, "When you find that person who doesn't run when things get hard — I think that's where Marc proved to me that he was more of a man than anything I had experienced."

Lopez and Anthony welcomed twins, Max and Emme, in 2008 and were married for 10 years before finalizing their divorce in June 2014.

In March 2019, former MLB star Alex Rodriguez proposed to Lopez in the Bahamas with a 16-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that was estimated to be worth over $1 million. A source told PEOPLE at the time that Rodriguez “did everything on his own with the ring,” and the proposal was a “complete surprise” for Lopez.

“There aren’t many words to share with you, only feelings. Gratitude. Excitement. And just … joy,” Rodriguez wrote about the beachside proposal on Instagram. “We know there is work to do to keep building a family and future we can be proud of, and we can’t do it without all of you.”

The couple were meant to tie the knot in Italy in June 2020 but were forced to postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They postponed the wedding a second time before officially ending their engagement in April 2021.

17 years after calling off their engagement, Lopez reconnected with Affleck in April 2021. A year later, the Gone Girl star popped the question to Lopez for the second time with a ring estimated to be worth over $5 million. It featured an 8.5-carat radiant-cut green diamond flanked by two half-moon accent diamonds and set on a platinum band.

A diamond expert told PEOPLE at the time that natural green diamonds are “ extremely rare ” and the value of the gem will “significantly increase over time.”

"It was nothing fancy at all, but it was the most romantic thing I could've ever imagined...just a quiet Saturday night at home, two people promising to always be there for each other,” Lopez shared about the proposal in her newsletter. “Green has always been my lucky color and now, for sure, it always will be.”

Lopez and Affleck tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022 before hosting a larger wedding in Georgia the following month. After their nuptials, Lopez revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music that Affleck engraved her ring with a special message: “not.going.anywhere."

“That's how he would sign his emails when we started talking again. Like 'Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere,' " she said.

After reports of tension in Lopez and Affleck's marriage surfaced in May 2024, Lopez officially filed for divorce on Aug. 20.

"She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken," a source told PEOPLE of the actress. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

Strictly Come Dancing full lineup 2024: Celebrity contestants revealed include Paul Merson and Toyah Wilcox

Strictly Come Dancing is gearing up to return for the show’s 20th anniversary as the show faces an ongoing scandal regarding the conduct of the BBC show’s professional dancers.

The 22nd series arrives as the programme faces scrutiny over the treatment of some of its celebrity participants. Two professional dancers, Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima , have now left the show following allegations made about their conduct during training .

Pernice has denied allegations of “threatening and abusive behaviour,” while Di Prima said in a statement he “deeply regrets” events that took place with his celebrity partner Zara McDermott during a rehearsal.

The series will begin in September, and will once again be hosted by the glittering duo of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

The eagle-eyed Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse will be returning to the judges’ table.

As with previous seasons, Strictly’s celebrity contestants were announced in drip feed announcements by the BBC. The official list is now complete and includes reality stars, singers, comedians and more. Meet them all below…

Jamie Borthwick

Actor Jamie Borthwick is known for his long-term role in the BBC soap EastEnders , having starred as Jay Brown/Mitchell since 2006. He is now one of the longest-serving actors on the show. Borthwick previously appeared on the Strictly Christmas special in 2023, and took home the trophy for his slick moves and impressive stage presence.

”I had a ball doing the Strictly Christmas special last year, so when I was asked to join for this series it was the easiest yes!” he said. “This is a fresh challenge and it will be so different to be learning a new dance every week and for the public to have their say.

“I’m hoping to be Salsa-ing around Albert Square in no time and I’ll be asking my Walford Strictly alumni for some words of wisdom. See you on the dancefloor!”

Althete Tom Dean is is a three-time Olympic champion. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics he made history as the first British man to win a gold medal for the men’s 200m swim freestyle in over 100 years, going on to win a further gold medal in Tokyo and become England’s most decorated athlete at the subsequent 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning a total of seven medals.

At the Paris Olympic Games this year, Dean brought home his third gold medal for Team GB in the team 4 x 200m freestyle relay and spilled the news he was a Strictly contestants afterwards in a live interview.

In a follow-up statement, he said: “I am taking part in Strictly Come Dancing 2024! You may have heard me accidentally say it poolside first… but now I can officially talk about how excited I am to get stuck into something new, meet some brilliant people and get dancing. Bring it on!”

Shayne Ward

Singer Shayne Ward was catapulted to fame when his debut single and album topped the UK charts. His song “That’s My Goal” made it to Christmas number one after he won the second series of The X Factor in 2005. Ward is also known as Aidan Connor in the ITV soap Coronation Street and has appeared in a number of musicals including the West End’s 1980s show Rock of Ages .

Ward said of his upcoming Strictly appearance: “I’m buzzing to see all of the sparkles and magic that is Strictly in real life. I’m no stranger to live TV, but dancing Latin and Ballroom in front of millions is a whole new level. No promises on my dancing ability, but I will give it my best shot!”

Sarah Hadland

Actor Sarah Hadland is best known for her role as Stevie in the BBC comedy Miranda , which she starred in alongside the show’s creator Miranda Hart. She is also one of the original cast members of the children’s series Horrible Histories and has appeared in numerous films, including the Bond epic Quantum of Solace .

The Love Island star said of her inclusion on the show: “Pinch me, I can’t believe I’m going to be on Strictly Come Dancing ! I’ve been watching the show since I was little – it’s a firm Ghouri family favourite – so this is a total dream come true. I know it’s going to be an unforgettable experience and I hope to represent and make everyone proud out on that dance floor.”

Only Way is Essex star Pete Wicks rose to fame on the Brentford-based reality show in 2015, with storylines revolving around his relationships with Megan McKenna and Chloe Sims. He has since appeared on shows including Celebrity MasterChef , Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins , The Real Full Monty and Celebs Go Dating, and co-hosts the Staying Relevant podcast with his best friend and  Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson.

“Dancing live in front of the nation every Saturday? Absolutely terrifying,” Wicks said. “But anyone who knows me knows I love a challenge and trying new things, so I’m genuinely looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Wynne Evans

He also hosts a regular show on BBC Radio Wales and is filming a series with Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page about the Welsh coastline.

“I am honestly still pinching myself, a portly balding opera singer, me, taking part in Strictly Come Dancing ?!” he said. “I’m not entirely sure how I’ll get along, if all else fails I’ll just have to learn the art of distraction.

“What I do know is I will give it my all and aim to make Wales proud. I’m definitely going to try and combine my love of opera into one of my routines. Plus, after winning Celebrity MasterChef last year, maybe the route to the judges’ hearts will be through their stomachs!”

Toyah Willcox

Singer and actor Toyah Willcox has 13 top 40 singles including “It’s a Mystery”, “Thunder in the Mountains” and “I Want to Be Free”.  She fronted the eponymous band Toyah from 1977 before becoming a solo artist in 1983. The singer has also featured in films including The Corn is Green and Derek Jarman’s 1979 adaptation of The Tempest .

Willcox said in a statement: “Wow Strictly Come Dancing, can you believe it! This is going to be a wild and wonderful ride, and I’m here for every sparkly second. I’m used to performing for big crowds but this is completely fresh for me. How I will do, it’s a mystery... I just want to get cracking and learn some dance routines now!”

Dr Punam Krishan

Dr Punam Krishan is a resident GP on BBC Morning Live and BBC Radio Scotland. She regularly covers health topics for newspapers and TV shows and has also written the children’s book How to Be a Doctor and Other Live-Saving Jobs .

She said: “This still doesn’t feel real, I am overjoyed to be a contestant on this year’s show. I have watched Strictly every year with my family and it feels extra special that it’s the 20th year, I can’t believe I will be the one getting Strictly -fied now. This is so out of my comfort zone, but I’m up for the journey and will give it my absolute all.”

Chris McCausland

Comedian Chris McCausland is a regular face on flagship comedy shows like Have I Got News for You and Would I Lie to You?. He is also known for playing Rudi in the CBeebies show Me Too!

The 46-year-old will be the first blind contestant to compete in the show. He lost his eyesight in his early twenties as a result of retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary condition. The diagnosis resulted in him leaving his job in web development, before joining the entertainment industry and finding success.

“I don’t dance, I haven’t danced, I can’t dance, I can’t see the dancing I will have to do. What can possibly go wrong? Ok don’t answer that!” he said. “If anybody out there is thinking ‘How the hell is he going to do that?’ then rest assured that I am thinking exactly the same thing.”

Asked how he feels about taking part, McCausland added: “Apprehensive, massively apprehensive. I don’t know what I’m getting myself into, I’ve never watched it, obviously. It’s just some music. I don’t dance, I have never danced. I grew up with headbanging and mosh pits.”

Singer JB Gill shot to fame in the X-Factor -founded band JLS alongside Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold and Ortise Williams, who are known for their hits “Everybody in Love”, “She Makes Me Wanna” and “One Shot”. The pop group released four albums before splitting in 2013.

Gill said of joining this year’s Strictly contestants: “I danced in the Strictly Christmas special over a decade ago and LOVED it, so when I got the call to join Strictly this year, it was an immediate yes from me. I’m raring to go to and looking forward to showing off some new skills to the JLS boys.”

Montell Douglas (AKA Fire from Gladiators)

Douglas, who won over audiences when she competed as Fire on the rebooted series of Gladiators , will be bringing her sporty background to the dancefloor.

She previously competed as an Olympic Bobsledder and Team GB Sprinter, becoming the first female UK athlete to compete at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

The athlete previously held a British woman’s record for fastest 100m sprint and won a Commonwealth Gold in the 4x100m relay race in 2010.

“ Strictly ARE YOU READY, Fire is here to light up the Ballroom,” she said.

“Wow I am so honoured to have been asked to do the show. It is such an amazing thing to be a part of and I can’t wait to get started. Hopefully a few of my Gladiator moves will come in handy with the Tango or Paso Doble!” she said.

Paul Merson

Merson, who made his debut for Arsenal aged 17, played 424 times for the Gunners and scored 99 goals during his time on the team.

He now works as a football pundit and commentator and says he is up for the challenge of learning a new skill for Strictly .

Merson said of his signing: “Joining Strictly is a whole new ball game for me, but I’m going to tackle this challenge head on.

“I’m ready to swap the pitch for the Ballroom floor, so here’s hoping my two left feet can learn some moves and you never know, maybe I’ll be taking home the Glitterball Trophy!”

Former England and Team GB hockey player Sam Quek has won 125 international caps for the England and Great Britain women’s hockey teams, including a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Olympian said the thought of dancing on the ballroom floor is “quite daunting”.

“I’m chuffed to be a part of this legendary show and Quickstep into the shoes of a performer, it feels absolutely surreal but I’m ready for every bit of the adventure,” she said.

Nick Knowles

TV presenter Nick Knowles, best known for fronting BBC’s emotional building show DIY SOS, will be swapping his overalls for sparkly jackets on Strictly .

On DIY SOS, Knowles helps transform the homes of families who are nominated by their community.

“I’m so, so excited to be doing Strictly this year,” Knowles said. “People may be more used to me getting stuck in on a building site or travelling the world, but dancing live on TV will be a whole new adventure.

“I’ve spent my whole life learning new skills and I’ve never been afraid of a challenge. I’ll give it my everything... and try not to embarrass my kids of course!”

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Ukraine targets Moscow in massive drone attack, one of largest since war began

Portrait of John Bacon

Russian defenses shot down dozens of armed drones, including several in the Moscow region, in one of the biggest assaults on Russian territory since the war began, Russian authorities said Wednesday.

Some of the drones were shot down over Podolsk, a city of more than 300,000 people about 20 miles south of the Kremlin, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

"This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever," Sobyanin said in a social media post Wednesday. "The layered defense of Moscow that was created made it possible to successfully repel all the attacks."

The assault comes four days after a drone attack in the Russian border region of Rostov ignited a massive fire at a fuel depot. Russian Orthodox priests visited the scene Wednesday, leading prayers for hundreds of firefighters still battling the blaze.

The Defense Ministry said it destroyed 45 drones over Russian territory early Wednesday, including 11 over the Moscow region. The rest were shot down over the border regions of Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga and Kursk.

Belgorod has been a frequent target of Ukrainian shelling, and Kyiv forces seized almost 500 square miles in Kursk and took hundreds of Russian soldiers prisoner in an incursion two weeks ago.

Developments:

∎ Russian missiles and drones have hit almost 12,000 buildings in Ukraine since the war began, more than half of them civilian, said Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine armed forces.

∎ The Netherlands will provide Ukraine with more than 50 mobile radar units by the end of the year to strengthen air defenses, the Netherlands Defense Ministry announced.

∎ Russian authorities closed airports and restricted airspace in the northwestern province of Murmansk, Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported. Murmansk Gov. Andrey Chibis said a drone threat had been detected.

∎ The Kremlin is using propaganda to prepare Russians for a new normal that will include seizure of some border territory, the independent Russian website Meduza reported. The government wants Russians to realize that areas of Kursk seized by Ukraine may not be taken back soon, according to Meduza, which publishes in Latvia.

Ukraine incursion: Zelenskyy says Ukraine creating 'buffer zone' in Russia to prevent attacks

Ukraine Independence Day could bring Russian shelling

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv warned of an increased risk of round-the-clock Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine over the next several days in connection with Ukraine’s Independence Day on Saturday. The embassy urged Americans in Ukraine to monitor local media for updates, identify shelter locations in advance of any air alert and immediately take shelter if an air alert is announced, and follow the directions of first responders in the event of an emergency.

NATO members are leading an international campaign to Make Noise For Ukraine on Ukrainian Independence Day. People are urged to post a video making noise for Ukraine on social media with the hashtag #MakeNoiseForUkraine. Supporters are asked to clap, cheer, play an instrument, sing a song, stomp feet or ring a bell. Also suggested: Shouting ‘Slava Ukraini!’ – Glory to Ukraine!

Report: Russia scrambling to meet troop needs

Russia is developing new troop units and recruiting more personnel to sustain its war-by-attrition approach against Ukraine, the British Defense Ministry said in its latest assessment . It notes that personnel forming a new motor rifle regiment previously served as radar operators and other specialist roles. The high casualty rates resulting from troops not properly trained for battle mean Russia needs to continuously replenish front line infantry troops, the assessment added.

Those issues "almost certainly continue to limit Russia's ability to generate higher-capability units," the assessment said.

Russia refuses to negotiate with Zelenskyy government.

Ukraine’s offensive in Russia's Kursk Region has eliminated any chance of negotiations with the current government in Kyiv, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Wednesday. She dismissed President Volodymyr  Zelenskyy's apparent aims of creating a buffer zone to make it more difficult for the Russian military to attack and rejected claims the incursion would strengthen Kyiv's negotiating positions.

The stunning incursion two weeks ago drew praise from some U.S. senators who called for stepping up military aid to Ukraine, which has lost almost 20% of its territory to Russia forces since the invasion began in February 2022.

"Apparently, Zelenskyy’s aim is to use such appeals to the people to raise his plummeting rating, to prove his pseudo-legitimacy and to attract funding from the Western donors," she said. "Of course, this entire criminal scheme of the Kyiv regime was obviously doomed to fail from the outset."

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia's Security Council, went further, stating on social media that there could be no talks until Ukraine is "completely and utterly destroyed."

One week in Kursk: Maps show evolution of Ukrainian incursion as Russia builds trenches

Global atomic energy chief to visit Kursk plant

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he is prepared to tour the Kursk nuclear power plant by month's end, Zakharova said on Wednesday. The Russian Defense Ministry last week  accused  Ukraine of planning to attack the Kursk plant as part of its incursion into the region, an assertion Kyiv denied.

"We expect that an understanding of the danger that Ukrainian provocations against Russian nuclear power plants represent will prompt the IAEA's management to take concrete action to ensure safety," Zakharova said.
