Is There a Find Function on iPhone?

The short answer is no. There is no easy shortcut to help you find things like you might use on a Mac or Windows computer. There's no familiar search bar (unless you install a third-party app) or keyboard command, but there are still ways to find what you're looking for.

Can iPhone Use Control F?

You cannot use Control F on an iPhone, but you can use several search tactics to find what you're looking for, whether it's on the web, in a PDF, or stored in other places on your phone. One way to do this is using the Safari browser.

Navigate to the website you want to search and type your search term in the address bar at the top of the screen.

Scroll down to On This Page . You should see the number of times that word or phrase is used on the page in parenthesis next to the section title. Tap the entry below this information.

This will take you back to the website, and you can use the controls at the bottom of the screen to navigate to each instance of that word on the page.

Unfortunately, the word is not highlighted on the page, so you'll need to use the controls to see each instance of it.

You can also perform a similar function if you're using the Chrome browser. The icons look a little different, and it's even harder to find than the Safari option, but it's there, hidden in a menu.

From the webpage where you want to search for a word, tap the share icon.

Scroll down until you find Find on Page or Find in Page . Tap that option.

You're taken back to the web page with a search bar open at the top. Type the word you want to find, and it will immediately show up, highlighted on the page. At the end of the search bar, you can see the number of instances of that word on the page and navigate through them.

How Do You Search for a Word on iPhone?

If what you're trying to do is search for a word on your iPhone that's not on a web page, you're going to have a harder time finding it. You can try searching in an individual app, such as files or images. But there is no way to search all the files on your phone at one time for a specific word or phrase.

How Do You Ctrl F on iPhone PDF?

If you want to find a specific word or phrase in a document on your iPhone, the easiest way to do it will be in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. From there, you can open the document and tap the looking glass at the top of the screen, then type whatever term you're looking for.

If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can also use iBooks. It works the same way. Open the PDF file you want to search and tap the magnifying glass to conduct your search.

In the Google Docs app, tap More  > Find and replace . Type the word you want to find and tap Search .

Open the presentation and tap the Find icon in the upper-right corner. Enter a word or phrase you want to find. For an advanced search, tap the Options icon to the left of the search box.

What is a browser cache, how to perform a hard refresh in your browser.

Sometimes, a website does not behave as expected or seems stuck showing outdated information. To fix this, it's easy to force your browser to completely reload its local copy of the page (cache) using a simple keyboard shortcut. Here's how to do it.

To speed up browsing, web browsers save copies of website data to your computer as a set of files called a cache. When you load a website, you are often viewing a local copy of elements from the site (such as images) pulled from your cache.

Normally, if the browser loads a website and detects a change, it will fetch a new version of the site from the remote web server and replace the cache. But the process is not perfect, and sometimes your browser may end up with a local copy of the website data in your browser cache that doesn't match the latest version on the server. As a result, a web page may look incorrect or not function properly.

To fix this, we need to force the web browser to discard what it already has in the cache and to download the latest version of the site. Many people call this a "hard refresh."

In most browsers on PC and Mac, you can perform a simple action to force a hard refresh. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click on the reload icon on your browser's toolbar.

There are also keyboard shortcuts to perform the equivalent hard refresh. Because there are multiple ways to do the same action, they will be listed below:

• Chrome, Firefox, or Edge for Windows: Press Ctrl+F5 (If that doesn't work, try Shift+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R).
• Chrome or Firefox for Mac: Press Shift+Command+R.
• Safari for Mac: There is no simple keyboard shortcut to force a hard refresh. Instead, press Command+Option+E to empty the cache, then hold down Shift and click Reload in the toolbar.
• Safari for iPhone and iPad:  There is no shortcut to force a cache refresh. You'll have to dig into settings to erase your browser's cache.

After you perform the hard refresh, you should see the web page go blank, and the reloading process will take longer than usual. That's because the browser is redownloading all of the data and images on the site.

If forcing a refresh didn't fix the issue, you can try to do a hard refresh again. If that doesn't help, the issue may be with the website itself---or your browser may need an update . Good luck!

How to Hard Refresh Any Browser on Mobile and PC

This is known as cache data and it helps browsers save bandwidth and loading time when we go on to revisit the same websites. While the process works smoothly for the most part, it can often create problems such as websites showing an older version of a webpage or webpage not functioning properly.

That’s where performing a hard refresh can help. Doing this will force the browser to ignore any existing cache data and load the page from scratch. 

If you’re not sure how to perform a hard refresh on your web browser, here’s how the process works on major browsers.

Steps for Hard Refresh 

If you’re on PC or Mac, here are the keyboard shortcuts that you can use to perform a hard refresh on different browsers.

Hard Refresh on Chrome, Firefox, or Edge

To perform a hard refresh on Chrome, Firefox or Edge, Windows users can use the shortcut Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R .

Alternatively, if you’re using Chrome or Edge, you can also press F12 to open DevTools. Then right-click on the refresh button and select Hard Reload from the menu.

If you’re on Mac, press Cmd+Shift+R to perform a hard refresh. Or, press and hold the Shift key and click on the Reload button.

Hard Refresh on Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer users can press Ctrl+F5 to hard reload it. Alternatively, you can press and hold the Ctrl key and click on the Reload button.

Hard Refresh on Safari

Since Safari doesn’t have any direct shortcut to perform a hard refresh, you’ll have to manually clear the cache and then refresh the webpage. Read on to learn how. 

To empty cache, press Cmd+Option+E . After that, hold down Shift and click on the Reload button.

Hard Refresh Chrome and Samsung Internet on Android

Unlike PC users, mobile users do not get the luxury of using keyboard shortcuts to hard refresh a web page. Therefore, to hard refresh a web page on your phone, you’ll have to manually clear any cache data associated with the site and reload the page. Here’s how the process works on Google Chrome and Samsung Internet for Android.

1. Launch Google Chrome on your phone and tap on the three-dot menu icon to open Settings.

2. Under Advanced, open Site settings and go to Data stored. 

3. Here, you’ll find a list of websites for which Google Chrome has stored cache data. Tap on the site URL you wish to hard refresh and tap on the Clear & reset button. 

4. Now go ahead and open the website for which you cleared the cache data. Use the three-dot menu icon and tap on the refresh button.

Now Chrome will download fresh data from the server and load the page for you.

Samsung Internet

1. Launch the Samsung Internet Browser on your phone. Tap on the three horizontal bars to choose Settings from the list.

2. Under Advanced , go to Sites and downloads . Next, open Manage Website Data from the menu.

3. Here, you’ll find a list of all the websites that the browser has stored cache data for. Go to the website URL that you’re facing problems with. Tap on the Delete button in the top right corner and mark the URL for which you intend to delete the cache data. Lastly, tap on the Delete button at the bottom.

4. Now go ahead and open the website for which you cleared the cache data. It should load up the latest version of the web page now.

Hard Refresh Safari on iPhone

Similar to Chrome and Samsung Internet on Android, performing a hard refresh on Safari for iPhone also requires you to delete the cache data first.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to find Safari . Next, tap on Advanced .

2. Now go to Website Data . Here, you’ll find a list of all the websites for which Safari has collected the cache data for. Tap on the Edit option in the top right corner.

3. Lastly, tap on the red button next to the website’s URL to remove its data.

Once removed, you can try visiting the webpage now and Safari will load a fresh copy of the web page from the server.

Many computer users associate Control+F with searching for text on a web page, and if you’re coming to the iPhone or iPad from the Windows world, you may be wondering how you can use the equivalent to the Control+F search in the Safari browser on iPhone and iPad.

The Safari web browser on iPhone and iPad has a built in Find On Page search feature that easily allows you to search for matched text on a webpage, mimicking the behavior of Control+F search for users who are coming to the platform from Windows. And arguably, the iPhone and iPad method is even easier to search matched text for than using Ctrl+F, as you’ll see in this walkthrough.

How to Use the Control+F Equivalent in Safari for iPhone & iPad

Ready to search for matching text on a web page in Safari? Here’s all you need to do:

• Open the Safari browser if you haven’t done so and visit the web page you want to search for matched text on
• Tap the arrow button flying out of the box in the Safari toolbar

• Scroll down and tap on “Find On Page”, this is the Control+F equivalent on iPhone and iPad Safari

• Enter the text you want to find on the web page

• Use the arrows to navigate to the next or prior instance of the matched text if desired, when finished tap “Done”

This works exactly the same on Safari for iPhone and iPad.

Depending on which versions of iOS or iPadOS are in use, the Find On Page option in the menu may appear as a line option or a button , but it’s always available in Safari for iPhone and iPad.

Bonus Trick: Command+F is Control+F equivalent for iPad Safari Users

One added trick is available for iPad users that have an external keyboard or keyboard case connected to their device, like the Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard.

• From Safari on iPad, hit Command+F on the keyboard to bring up Find On Page instantly
• Type the text you want to search for on page and hit return to find the matching text on the web page

The Command+F for Find On Page keystroke on iPad with keyboard is also the same for using Find On Page in Safari for Mac, and even Chrome for Mac.

Command+F as Control+F replacement should be extra simple for iPad users to remember, since the keystrokes are so similar.

On Macs, the correct keys are Command-F. What, are you on Windows or something?

Correct, Command+F is Find on Page on the Mac. This is aimed at people coming to iPhone or iPad from a Windows background and who are used to Control+F to search things on webpages.

On my iPhone, using Safari, I don’t have anything like what you’re showing. There are no windows in which to type

Good tip. Easier still: just type your search keywords in the Safari address bar, then tap “Find ” from the list. Saves a few steps, no need to use the Share dialog.

thanks for this, anyway you don’t need to use the share sheet, just write in the search bar and it expands to down, and that’s it, one of the options is “find on page”

Are you reading through a long webpage or PDF document? Similar to the control + F function on a computer (or Command F on a Mac), you can search for a word on an iPhone using the Share button. Here's how to Control F on an iPhone or iPad.

Quick Steps

• Open a webpage in Safari or another mobile browser.
• Tap the Share icon at the bottom.
• Pull up the menu and tap Find on Page .
• Enter a word or phrase into the field.
• Tap Done when finished.

• You can also search PDFs , but they must be open in Safari or Chrome.

• A pop-up menu will open.

• This can also look like Find in Page or similar depending on your browser.

You can easily search text using the Control+F shortcut on Windows and Command+F shortcut on macOS. This shortcut can be used on any web browser or app that contains text. While the iPhone doesn’t have the same shortcut, you can still search for text on various browsers and apps. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Search Text Using Ctrl+F on iPhone for Different Apps

Now, you can search for any other word by replacing the text in the search box. 

2. Search Text Using the Share Button in Safari and Chrome

Another way to search text in Safari, and the Google Chrome browser, is to use the Share button. You can use this method to search text in other browsers as well.

1. Open  Safari  or  Chrome  browser and head to your desired website. 

2. Tap the  Share button below the Address Bar on Safari and beside the Address Bar on Chrome at the top right corner. 

3. In the following menu list, scroll down and select the  Find on Page/Find in Page  option. 

4. Enter the word you’re looking for in the search bar and the browser will highlight the word and also mention the number of times it appears on the webpage. You can even navigate using the up and down arrows. 

3. Search Text in Chrome Browser

If Chrome is your primary browser on iPhone or iPad, there’s another method using which you can search text. It is just as convenient as the former method, and we’ve mentioned to provide you with options.  

1. Open  Chrome  browser on your iPhone or iPad and head to the desired website. 

2. Tap the  ellipsis icon  (three dots) at the bottom right corner. 

3. Swipe up on the popup list and tap the  Find in page…  option. 

4. Type the word in the search box at the top and it’ll display the results immediately. 

4. Use Search in Photos App

Apple has added a search feature to the Photos app. You can search for images by entering the date, place, people, category, etc. Head to this page to know more about what you can search within the Photos app. That said, here’s how to use the Search feature in the Photos app on iPhone and iPad.

1. Open the  Photos  app on your iPhone or iPad. 

2. Tap the  Search  icon located at the bottom right corner. 

3. Now, enter the word relevant to the image you want to locate. 

4. Your device will gather and display all the relevant images. It will also display these images based on the date and location under the Moments section. 

5. Search Text in Messages App

You can search for text in the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad. It is a really handy feature. Especially, when you’re trying to navigate to a certain message, but you can’t remember who sent it. All you have to do is enter the text you recall and it will display results from every conversation that ever used that specific word. 

1. Open the  Messages  app on your iPhone or iPad. 

2. Swipe down on the messages, which will reveal the hidden  Search Bar . 

3. Tap on the  Search Bar  and enter the word or phrase in the text bar and your device will display the relevant results. 

6. Search Text in Notes App

Many of us use the Notes app to store lecture notes, grocery lists, etc. Navigating to a specific note is quite a task by itself if you have hundreds of notes. However, there’s a simple solution and it’s right under your nose. 

1. Open the  Notes  app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap the  Search bar  located under Folders. 

3. Enter the word you want to search and all the notes containing the relevant word will be displayed. Even the Locked notes will appear in search results if the title contains the relevant word, however, its contents will remain hidden. 

7. Search Text in Files App

Just like the Notes app, even the Files app has a dedicated search bar integrated right on its main screen. All you have to do is open the Files app and search for the desired file. 

1. Open the  Files  app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Tap the  Search bar  at the top of the screen. It is available in the  Recents ,  Shared , and  Browse  menus of the Files app.  

3. Enter the word you want to search and every file containing that word in the title will be displayed in the search results. 

8. Search Text in Google Docs App

How to Hard Refresh on a Mobile Device

Browsers save (or “cache”) a lot of information in order to increase web performance, including images, text, and styling information for the site. This is usually a great feature, because it allows you to surf your favorite websites with minimal load time. However, when it comes to viewing recent changes to the site, it can cause some problems; namely, that the changes aren’t there!

In order to see recent changes to your website, you may have to “hard refresh” the browser. This can be tricky on a mobile device because you cannot simply press Cmd + Shift + R (or Alt + Shift + R, if you’re on PC). That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the most common devices and browsers, with hard refresh directions specific to each one:

In addition to Diavonex's suggestion, you can refresh the Safari browser's page by scrolling up to the top of the page, then pressing the circular arrow in the address bar (where the website URL is displayed). This will refresh/reload the page. I don't know if it will help in your case but that's how the page is refreshed in Safari for iOS.

How To Control F On iPhone (CTRL+F)

How to CTRL F on iPhone

Naturally, there is no “Control Key” or “Command Key” on your iPhone. But using the equivalent to “Control + F” on your iPhone is still quite simple and you can use it to search for a word on a webpage on iPhone. There are two easy ways to do this.

Launch “Safari” on your iPhone. Open up a web page containing a wall of text to be searched. Now enter your search term right where you entered the web address and scroll down to the bottom of the list.

At the top, you should find grouped hits from your browser history (if available), a regular web search, your bookmarks and so on. But at the bottom, you should see a special kind of search result labeled “On This Page” .

Tap it to get to the list of results on the current web page. To advance through multiple occurrences of your search term on the page, tap the arrow symbols next to the counter that displays the number of matches. Your iPhone will emphasize  the matches using a yellow highlighter color. Tap on “Done” to end the search mode.

You can also start the search via the Share menu . To do so, first tap the Share button (square with arrow) in the navigation bar at the bottom. Then select the item “Find on Page” in the Share menu.

Then enter your search term in the input field. As with the first option, you can use the arrow keys to jump from hit to hit. Tap “Done” to close the search.

How can I force Safari to perform a full page reload, without using the mouse?

I'm using Safari to preview web pages as I develop them on my local server. I've got 'Disable Caches' checked in the Develop menu. And yet Safari is still working from a cached version of a stylesheet that's linked from the HTML file being displayed.

I can sometimes override this by Option-clicking the reload button in the location bar, but I want to refresh the page automatically when I save the CSS file. At the moment I'm doing it using an AppleScript that's bound to the Save action in my text editor. I could see using Keyboard Maestro instead. But I need some consistent way to force Safari to do a full reload from the keyboard.

Enable the Develop menu from Safari menu - Preferences - Advanced .

On Safari version 11.1 and above :

CMD + OPTION + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

On Safari version 9 and above :

CMD + SHIFT + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

Emptying caches seems not to reload the stylesheets everytimes…

On Safari below version 9 :

Empty cache and then reload so full "hot key" would be :

CMD + OPTION + E

CMD + R to refresh the page

Of course probably turning opening and closing a New Private Window from the File would also work but…

There is an option in the menubar Develop->Disable Caches. This is true for Safari 5.1. I'm not sure for the rest.

Turn on Private mode and refresh the page. It won't get it from the cache in private mode.

Hard refresh was removed as a keyboard shortcut in Safari 5. The old command for that was ⌘ + SHIFT + R

CTRL + F5 May work but I can't test here.

Workaround: in the develop menu, select "start debugging javascript" and it must reload the code properly. You can then stop debugging... I know it's not a clean solution and I'm not sure if it works always or in all versions, but it's working for me now.

I stumble upon this question and apparently the current answers do not work.

Issue is currently CMD + ALT + R opens the Responsive design.

However if the inspector is open via CMD + ALT + I , then the same shortcut does a clean refresh.

Current Safari Version: 12.1.2

CMD + L focus on the address bar SHIFT + ALT + ENTER full reload for the current address

It seems to work on Safari 9

You can see how many instances of that word or phrase appear on that webpage, and if they don't appear at all, you can move on to a new webpage to hopefully find what you're looking for.

You might not know this, but the same "Control-F" function also works on the iPhone, although it looks and works a little differently there.

Okay, I'm on Business Insider.com, the best website there is. I'm on this ridiculously good story written by some handsome devil, but let's say I want to find the word "Apple" in this article.

The first step here is clicking the "Share" button, the box-shaped icon with an arrow pointing out from the top.

Clicking the Share button brings up the Share Sheet, which has lots of useful shortcuts and functions. You can actually re-arrange your shortcuts by tapping and holding any one of the icons, and then moving it to your desired location.

As you might guess, the function we want from the Share Sheet here is "Find on Page," which is the icon with the magnifying glass.

After you press the icon, you'll be prompted to start typing the word or phrase you're looking for. I typed out "Apple," and it immediately brought me to the first instance of the word.

If you click the arrow keys next to the word or phrase you're searching for, you'll move to the next or previous instance of your search terms.

If you prefer using Google Chrome on your iPhone, "Control-F" works there, too. It actually works better there, since Chrome will tell you how many instances of that word or phrase are on the webpage, just like a desktop computer. Apple's Safari doesn't do this.

The first thing you want to do is click the three dots in the bottom-right corner of Chrome.

Those three dots summon a whole new menu, with functions to reload the page, open new tabs and bookmarks, and more.

Scroll down this menu until you find the function called "Find in Page," which also has a magnifying glass icon next to it.

Just start typing the word or phrase you're looking for, and Google Chrome will find and highlight it for you.
