10 days of Ukraine's Kursk incursion – from first shot to dozens of settlements captured

On the morning of Aug. 6, the first groups of Ukrainian soldiers armed with heavy equipment crossed the Ukrainian-Russian border and entered Kursk Oblast , marking the largest attack on Russian territory since World War II.

This unprecedented operation took the world by surprise as Kyiv's troops cut through the border and allegedly seized over 1,000 square kilometers and dozens of settlements. Though the strategic calculus remains a matter of debate, namely due to Russia's ongoing push in Ukraine's east, the tactical success is undeniable.

As the incursion hit its 10-day mark on Aug. 15, we bring you a summary of what is known about the operation, from the moment the first Ukrainian troops crossed the border to Kyiv declaring a full capture of the town of Sudzha and creation of a military administration in Russia.

Day 1 - Ukrainian troops enter Russia

Russian pro-war Telegram channels are the first to report on Ukrainian "sabotage and reconnaissance groups" crossing the border around 8 a.m. on Aug. 6.

The information is later confirmed by Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of Kursk Oblast , who said Kyiv attempted a breakthrough in two border districts, Sudzha and Korenevo.

The Russian Defense Ministry says that up to 300 soldiers from Ukraine’s 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, as well as 11 tanks and 20 armored vehicles, were attacking near Nikolaevo-Darino and Oleshnya, two villages right at the border with Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast and some 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Kursk.

In a statement issued at 6:20 p.m., the ministry initially claims the incursion has been repelled with heavy losses for Ukraine, but later corrects the statement to indicate the fighting is ongoing.

Kyiv remains tight-lipped about the reports, but it is becoming increasingly clear something is afoot. Russian strikes against Sumy Oblast, which Ukrainian troops use as a launching pad for their incursion, spike considerably over the day.

Day 2 - Russia raises alarm as advance picks up pace

While still shrouded in the fog of war, the Ukrainian advance is picking up pace on Aug. 7. The Russian pro-war channel Two Majors claimed that Kyiv’s forces have penetrated as far as 15 kilometers (9 miles) and established a presence in 11 settlements.

Russian pro-war military bloggers now allege that fighting is ongoing at the outskirts of Sudzha and Korenevo , two district centers located 10 and 20 kilometers (6 and 12 miles) from Ukraine’s border, respectively.

Sudzha’s Mayor Vitaliy Slashchov admits "tense" situation in the town, while Ukrainian troops reportedly reach the gas metering station that transits Russian gas to Europe. The Kursk Oblast governor declares a state of emergency in the region.

The situation forces the Kremlin to react. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls a high-level meeting with Russian Army Chief Valery Gerasimov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, and other top officials, during which he brushes off the incursion as a " large-scale provocation ."

Kyiv remains evasive, though the state-run project "Khochu nayti" ("I want to find") says Ukraine captured at least 40 Russian soldiers – including conscripts – in Kursk Oblast .

EU and U.S. officials comment on the incursion for the first time, affirming Kyiv’s right to fight back against Russia.

Day 3 - Combat zone in Kursk Oblast grows

As Russia says that at least 1,000 Ukrainian troops are operating in Kursk Oblast as of Aug. 8, the combat zone only grows.

The independent Russian outlet Agentstvo now estimates that the hostilities are covering an area of 430 square kilometers . Russian pro-war channels claim that Sudzha is almost completely in Ukrainian hands and "basically lost," though skirmishes continue. They also claim that Ukraine is pushing towards Lgov, a town roughly 45 kilometers (28 miles) from the border.

Signs of poor preparation on Russia's side mount. Apart from fresh conscripts, the border was also protected by Chechen fighters of the Akhmat unit, who did not put up much of a fight against experienced Ukrainian troops.

Their commander, Apti Alaudinov , claims that Kyiv’s forces simply bypassed their defenses, while Russian pro-war military bloggers accuse the Chechens of breaking ranks and fleeing. Alaudinov is also the first Russian officer to admit Russian losses and Ukraine’s advance.

In another cryptic statement, President Volodymyr Zelensky says that "Russia brought war to our land, and it should feel what it has done," without directly mentioning Kursk.

Day 4 - Federal emergency declared

Russia finally admits Ukraine had reached the "outskirts" of Sudzha and declares a federal emergency in the region on Aug. 9. The same day, soldiers of Ukraine’s 61st Mechanized Brigade publish a video in a location presented as Sudzha , although the unit’s commanders do not officially comment at the time.

As various estimates put Ukraine's growing incursion force to several thousand , Russia starts pulling in reinforcements to push Ukrainian troops back. The moving columns are widely recorded and published on television and social media, allowing at least some of them to be identified as experienced units previously deployed in Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast .

One such video also leads to the destruction of a Russian column in the village of Oktyabrskoe on a highway between the towns of Rylsk and Lgov. Russian Telegram channels allege that Ukraine used a HIMARS missile in the attack, but the claim cannot be verified.

Day 5 - Incursion spills over to more Russian regions

A unit of the Ukrainian 252nd Battalion appears to have entered the village of Poroz in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast as of Aug. 10, signaling the incursion's spillover into other Russian border regions.

The same day, Russia declares a " counter-terrorism operation " in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk oblasts, introducing restrictions on the movement and communication of civilians.

Some 76,000 Russian citizens are said to have been evacuated from Kursk Oblast as the zone of hostilities reportedly grows to 650 square kilometers .

At the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, in the city of Kurchatov some 75 kilometers from the border, entrances are closed and construction workers are evacuated.

Zelensky makes his most direct public statement on the incursion to date, saying that Ukrainian forces have begun "to push the war out into the aggressor's territory" in an evening address. Again, he makes no direct mention of Kursk Oblast.

In a likely attempt to divert the narrative of Russian setbacks, the Russian Defense Ministry recycles old videos of strikes on Ukrainian positions and claims that they are from Kursk Oblast, The Insider reports.

Day 6 - Nuclear power plant fears

According to some claims, Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups enter the Belovsky district of Kursk Oblast overnight on Aug. 11. The Belovsky district is located some 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Sudzha and less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

The BBC reports that Russian forces began constructing defensive lines by the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant . International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi calls on both Russia and Ukraine to " exercise maximum restraint " to prevent a nuclear accident.

Kyiv continues its tight-lipped posture around the incursion, but Russia’s Defense Ministry concedes that Ukrainian forces reach the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez, located around 25 and 30 kilometers (15 miles and 18 miles) from the border, respectively.

Zelensky again makes vague, couched references to the situation in Kursk Oblast, saying that missile strikes against Ukraine launched from Russian border regions necessitate a reaction .

"We are recording all the places from which the Russian army strikes, including Belgorod Oblast, Kursk Oblast, and other areas. We record every missile strike. And each of these strikes deserves a fair response."

Day 7 - Ukraine finally acknowledges incursion

Belgorod Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov says on Aug. 12 there is Ukrainian military activity by the Krasnoyaruzhsky border district and announces the evacuation of the area .

One week into the incursion, acting governor Smirnov says Ukraine is in control of 28 settlements in Kursk Oblast.

Ukraine's 225th Separate Assault Battalion publishes a video of a Russian flag being removed from a building in the village of Darino , located some 4 kilometers (2 miles) from the border. The location cannot be independently verified.

After seven days of coded messages and effective radio silence, Ukraine’s leadership finally acknowledges the presence of its troops on Russian territory. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi briefs Zelensky on the situation in Kursk Oblast, claiming that Ukrainian forces control about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) in the area.

Putin promises that the "enemy will receive a worthy riposte " as Russia reportedly begins redeploying some of its troops from southern Ukraine to Kursk Oblast.

Later in the day, Zelensky says that "our operations are solely a security issue for Ukraine: liberating the border from the Russian military" and calls the incursion another " catastrophe " for Putin.

After clearly being taken by surprise, some of Ukraine’s international allies begin praising the operation.

Day 8 - Hundreds of Russian POWs

Zelensky says on Aug. 13 that Ukraine currently controls 74 settlements in Kursk Oblast and that " hundreds " of Russian soldiers have surrendered since the operation began.

Ukrainian officials begin clarifying the intent of the incursion , saying the aim is not to seize Russian territory but to "protect the lives of our people" by preventing cross-border strikes and diverting Russian reinforcements from Ukraine.

Evacuations in both Kursk and Belgorod oblasts continue. Belgorod Oblast Governor Gladkov says that some 11,000 residents of the Krasnoyaruzhsky district near the Ukrainian border have been evacuated.

Smirnov claims that some refugees will be resettled in Russian-occupied part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast .

Evacuations are also underway on the Ukrainian side of the border, with some 20,000 civilians reportedly under evacuation orders in Sumy Oblast. The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces announces restrictions on civilian movement in the region within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the border with Kursk Oblast.

Despite the incursion's tactical success, its strategic impacts have yet to materialize, as soldiers in the Toretsk sector say the operation does not yet influence the fighting there.

Yet, there are increasing signs that the fighting is beginning to have larger implications.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, who has long refrained from directly becoming involved in Russia’s full-scale war, orders the transfer of some of Minsk’s military equipment to Russia to help shore up what appear to be heavy losses in Kursk Oblast.

Day 9 - Belgorod declares emergency

Ukrainian TV reports from Sudzha for the first time on Aug. 14 and shows the Russian flag being removed from an administrative building. The news appears to contradict Russian forces' claims that the town is still not under total Ukrainian control.

Evacuations in Russia widen . Belgorod Oblast Governor Gladkov declares a state of emergency in the area, citing an " extremely difficult " and tense situation due to ongoing attacks from Ukrainian forces.

In his first public comments since the beginning of the operation, U.S. President Joe Biden says the situation in Kursk Oblast creates " a real dilemma " for Putin.

Syrskyi says that over 100 Russian POWs have been taken in less than 24 hours.

Meanwhile, there are growing discussions about how Ukraine will manage the territory it now controls, as well as how to deal with the humanitarian impact facing Russian citizens. Zelensky says that the prospect of creating civil administration bodies in Kursk Oblast , including military command posts, should not be ruled out.

Day 10 - Sudzha captured

Zelensky confirms on Aug. 15 Ukraine has fully captured Sudzha , arguably the most significant milestone of the incursion to date. To better manage the held territory, Kyiv announces a plan to set up a military administration in Kursk Oblast led by Major General Eduard Moskailov.

Ukraine's advance appears to have slowed down but not stopped. Syrskyi claims that as of Aug. 15, Ukrainian forces control 1,150 square kilometers (444 square miles) and 82 settlements.

Over the past day, Ukraine's troops advanced between 500 meters and 1.5 kilometers in the Russian region, the commander-in-chief reported.

A federal emergency is declared also in Belgorod Oblast .

Biden calls Ukraine incursion ‘a real dilemma for Putin’

Ukraine’s military incursion into Russia has “created a real dilemma” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Joe Biden said on Tuesday, adding that U.S. officials are in constant touch with the Ukrainians about the move. About 1,000 Ukrainian troops rammed through the Russian border in the early hours of Aug. 6 with tanks and armored vehicles. A U.S. official said late on Tuesday that the goal of Ukraine’s Kursk incursion appears to be to force Russia to pull troops out of Ukraine to defend Russian territory against the cross-border assault.

Answering questions from reporters upon arrival in New Orleans, Biden said he has been briefed every four to five hours for the last six to eight days on Ukraine’s action.

“It’s creating a real dilemma for Putin,” he said in his first substantive comments about the operation, which appeared to have caught the Russians off guard.

The U.S. has provided billions of dollars of weaponry to Ukraine intended largely for defensive purposes, as Ukraine tries to repel the Russian invasion launched in February 2022.

Biden in May authorized Kyiv to launch U.S.-supplied weapons at military targets inside Russia that are supporting an offensive against the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The White House said Ukraine did not provide advance notice of its incursion, which took place in the Kursk region of Russia. Russian forces on Tuesday struck back at Ukrainian troops with missiles, drones and airstrikes.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said Washington had no involvement in the operation.

“We had nothing to do with this,” she said.

“We have no involvement. We’ll continue to have conversations with the Ukrainians about their approach, but it is really for them to speak to,” she added.

Putin has said he believed Ukraine’s operation was aimed at improving Kyiv’s negotiating position ahead of possible talks and slowing the advance of Russian forces along the front.

U.S. officials say the objectives of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy remain to be seen.

“We’re trying to figure out exactly what they are doing and the goal here, and it’s still not 100% clear,” said a U.S. official.

Terrifying UAL Near-Miss at Honolulu Risked Catastrophy Per FAA

United Airlines had a previously unreported near-miss At Honolulu Airport that was brought to the public’s attention by the FAA today. The Federal Aviation Administration’s acting administrator said that an industry safety summit is now being called for March, based partly on the airline near-miss that took place at Honolulu Airport (HNL).

FAA’s Billy Nolen announced the review as well as a National Transporation Safety Board investigation into the incident that took place in January. It is the third recent near-catastrophic miss, with the other two incidents occurring in New York and Texas.

United Airlines Honolulu runway incursion leads to NTSB investigation.

incursion voyage hawaii

The NTSB will investigate the January 23, 2023 incident in which a UAL Boeing 777 widebody jet crossed the runway at HNL that a Kamaka Air cargo plane was in the process of landing on. The other aircraft was a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan. Grand Caravans are standard passenger and cargo planes at Hawaii’s airports and are also used extensively by Mokulele Airlines.

Recent events remind us that we must not become complacent. Now is the time to stare into the data and ask hard questions. — FAA Acting Director.

This comes after the House Transportation committee last week expressed its concerns about the FAA’s management and safety issues. The FAA is currently without an official agency head, pending senate confirmation.

The FAA safety summit will take place in March and brings together industry leaders, including airline unions. FAA said this is needed as safety controls “appear to be not as effective as they once were.”

In the meantime, NTSB’s Peter Knudson said that the runway incursion at HNL presented a “ significant risk of a catastrophic outcome .” The other two incidents also fell into that category.

NTSB will investigate Maui flight that came within 750′ of impacting the Pacific Ocean.

At the same time, it was announced that NTSB will look into the UAL 777 that dove to within 750′ of impacting the ocean following takeoff from Maui . The FAA previously investigated the incident but didn’t provide any reporting thereon. The details of that incident will soon also come to light.

The NTSB plans to issue a preliminary report on the Maui event within two to three weeks. NTSB will interrogate UAL prior to deciding on a formal investigation launch.

The other two recent near misses.

The FAA is investigating the near miss that took place at JFK earlier this month when two airliners nearly collided on the runway. One of the aircraft aborted takeoff while traveling more than 100 mph. The American Airlines plane crossed a runway without permission. A Delta Airlines plane was in the process of taking off at that exact time.

The American pilots “refused to be interviewed” about the incident according to the NTSB, as they did not wish their statements to be recorded. NTSB said recording interviews is a “longstanding practice” however. Delt provided written statements to NTSB.

What are runway incursions?

A runway incursion is anytime there is an incorrect presence of an aircraft (in this case) on the runway. The federal government says that there are four types of such incidents:

  • Category A is a serious incident in which a collision was narrowly avoided.
  • Category B is an incident in which separation decreases and there is a significant potential for collision, which may result in a time-critical corrective/evasive response to avoid a collision.
  • Category C is an incident characterized by ample time and/or distance to avoid a collision.
  • Category D is an incident that meets the definition of runway incursion, such as incorrect presence of a single vehicle/person/aircraft on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and take-off of aircraft but with no immediate safety consequences.

The FAA has not said which category the UAL Honolulu incident fits in. But their characterization is that of it having catastrophic potential.

This is a developing story. Please check back.

I think it should be called “near

How about near collision instead of near miss!!!

How scary. I haven’t flown since 1997 because of 3 bad flights like that. I have been thinking of finally getting on a plane to visit Hawaii next year but have changed my mind after seeing this on TV and reading about it. With more people on Rx drugs like Oxy how do we know the pilots aren’t under the influence is another thought.

All flight crew members are randomly drug and alcohol tested.

Hi. – Thanks for all your great information! Flew on United from LAX – HNL for the first time after many Hawaiian Air trips. Had a good experience & their food for purchase was far superior to Hawaiian’s free “food”. Their snack boxes for $10 were very good and didn’t mind paying for quality. Hawaiian really needs to step up & offer more quality products to start & finish a vacation on a happy note. Stayed at the Royal Hawaiian which was great! Thanks again- Andy

Thanks so much for your feedback and your many other comments. We’re glad to hear the things went well.

Beginning several months ago there has been problems of this, and other, kinds that previously were almost unheard of, Rare. All too often there’s a “rush” to judgment in blaming the Pilots, what if this is not the case at all but subterfuge? From the beginning I have been of the Belief that “Hacking” is responsible, that was partially proven true with the discovery of “Corrupted” files and the arrest of 2 airport workers, what if this wasn’t the end of the problem? Only time, near calamities, and thorough investigating can unravel this. Unsurprisingly the 3 major airports involved, so far, are involved with East Coast to Hawaii travel, when will others fall prey? Wait and See isn’t appropriate in this debacle, is it Terror Related?

Again pilot here in recent months after covid there’s been quite a spike of private and commercial air traffic.

Speaking to flight instructors they’re seeing an increased interest by citizens becoming private pilots. I’ve also noticed the increase in air traffic.

I’m finding that air traffic controllers are feeling stressed by increase air traffic you can hear it in their voices. So I’m not surprised by the increase of air incidents and surprised that we aren’t seeing more of them.

Also it would be interesting to know how many senior air traffic controllers retired during the pandemic.

I think this will likely come out as either ATC told United to hold short and they didn’t (United made a mistake)or ATC failed to do so an the mistake would be on them. Don’t think there is anything other then this is a simple human mistake and perhaps it would be a little premature to read into anything else.

Hmmm United seems to have a number of near misses…what about the December UAL flight from Maui and the plane dropped several thousand feet to 800 foot level?

Seems to me that we’re far enough along the radar, visual and radio journey to be able to avoid this kind of thing. If someone (think the government) is thinking they can successfully accommodate more traffic with fewer air traffic controllers, well, I’ll just point to a dozen or so government failures over just the past 2 weeks to say I have no faith in them.

Not really anything to do with radar. Either the Tower gave clearance to cross the Live Runway or they did not. If they did, then we have to ask what caused that, if they did not we have to ask why the UAL flight entered a live runway without clearance. Then we have to see if the landing aircraft had been final clearance to land on that runway or not. I am wondering if it is related to confusion over runway closures and changes.

Melanesian Encounter

Lifou, new caledonia.

Duration 2 hrs

Visit the Melanesian village of Hnathalo, where ancient customs are still practiced religiously and traditional island values are held in high esteem. Hnathalo is also the name of the tribe living there. Following a welcoming coconut drink, you will walk among the village’s thatched huts, hand-carved totems and open expanses shaded by swaying palms and towering Royal Poinciana trees. It will be like traveling back in time, as little has changed over the years because traditional Melanesian ways are still fervently practiced in Hnathalo. That is especially true in the preparation of dishes such as bougna, a concoction that you will sample after seeing how it’s cooked over red-hot stones in a cleverly designed ground oven. You will also be invited to enter the circular Chief’s Hut, one of the largest of its kind in New Caledonia, and view a church that French Catholic missionaries constructed in 1883. It is decorated with period furnishings that enhance the authenticity.

HIGHLIGHTS • Learn about the traditional Melanesian way of life in the rural village Hnathalo. • Sample the Melanesian dish bougna, which is cooked in banana leaves in an earthen oven. • See the interior of the revered Chief’s Hut and a missionary-built, 19th-century church.

Cliffs of Jokin

Gain an understanding of life on Lifou by visiting a prosperous vanilla plantation and the village of Jokin, which overlooks one of the island’s most gorgeous seascapes. Although Lifou’s terrain is rugged, especially along the coast, it is ideal for growing vanilla beans, as you will see firsthand on the plantation. The majority of the vanilla grown on the island is exported to flavor everything from ice cream to perfume, but a small quantity is always reserved for use by the islanders. After a tour of the wonderfully aromatic plantation, you will have the chance to sample a cup of vanilla-enhanced coffee. In the northernmost village of Jokin, you will enjoy free time to wander around and mingle with the residents, who will eagerly share the details of daily life in their small, rather remote village. Jokin perches high atop a fossilized coral cliff overlooking one of the island’s most magnificent bays, and the views are breathtaking.

HIGHLIGHTS • Visit a vanilla plantation to see how this aromatic flavoring is derived from orchids. • Sample a cup of vanilla-enhanced coffee and discover other uses of versatile vanilla. • Mingle with the villagers in remote Jokin and admire the ocean views from its coral cliffs.

The bridge features 10 bronze medallions with the ANB crest and imagery, sculpted by Roy Peratrovich Jr. In honor of the ANB’s 50th anniversary. The crew on the medallions depicts the two great Tlingit moieties, Eagle and Raven. The ANB is the solid rock on which these moieties rest. Tropical Forest Walk & Secret Grotto

Meander through a tropical forest and explore a grotto, where you will discover how the local Melanesians have gained great benefits from the natural environment. They have lived off the land for centuries, in particular, by hunting and using native flora for medicinal purposes. New Caledonia boasts more than 2,400 species of indigenous plants, so the islanders have always had a vast array of flora at their disposal. Some plants are used to treat ailments while others contain toxins that are sometimes added to rivers to temporarily paralyze fish so they can easily be caught. This is the sort of engaging information that the guide will impart during the forest walk. Later, you will explore a grotto by torchlight, which will eerily illuminate the interior, so you can see the odd shapes of the stalagmites and stalactites. You will also learn how the Melanesians use traditional methods to gather coconut crabs, trap birds and hunt wild pigs.

HIGHLIGHTS • Take a leisurely walk through a forest with a naturalist guide that will describe the flora. • Hear how the Melanesians use plants for medicinal purposes and hunt in the forest. • Explore a grotto by torchlight, which will make the interior look all the more dramatic.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of coral cliffs, turquoise seas and lush foliage, punctuated with splashes of brightly colored flowers. This is a true tropical paradise with little or no development, much like it has been for centuries. Still, you will drive through the island’s administrative center of We on beautiful Châteaubriand Bay at the end of a sugar-white beach on the east coast. Nearby, you will find Luecila Beach, an unspoiled stretch of sand that ranks as one of Lifou’s most picturesque and enjoyable as there are no resorts or shops to detract from the natural beauty. You will be free to do as you please there, whether it be swimming, beachcombing or simply relaxing in the shade of a coconut palm.

Spectacular volcanoes, craters and steam vents are waiting to be explored at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that has recently reopened after a period of tumultuous volcanic activity. The landscape of Volcanoes Park has dramatically changed as the floor of the Kilauea crater sunk over 1,500 feet and the overall caldera quadrupled in size and widened by over a square mile. Today, the explosive eruptions, earthquakes and ash clouds have been replaced by remarkable changes in the summit area. The highlights of this exciting tour include visits at each of the following destinations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park while riding to each stop in comfort on a deluxe motor coach. Walk through the Kilauea Visitors Center to receive information on the Park’s current conditions, view educational exhibits and interact with park rangers. Enjoy unforgettable views of Kilauea from Volcano House, just a short walk across the street. Kilauea’s massive size and scale is realized from this vantage point. Then you’ll be engulfed in rising steam as ground water seeps down to the hot volcanic rocks at the Steam Vents. The area between the edge of Kilauea’s caldera and the outer cliffs are treeless because the extreme heat destroys their roots; only shallow-rooted grasses and other hearty plants survive here. On you return to the pier, visit the Big Island Candies Store. Established in 1977, each of its delectable candies and cookies are hand-crafted in this factory store. View the production process and see what goes into making these world famous Hawaiian treats. All products are made from only freshly roasted Big Island macadamia nuts and pure Kona and Ka‘u coffee from farms on the Big Island. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans. The Volcanoes National Park Tour is not to be missed and includes round-trip transportation from the pier by deluxe motorcoach.

Taha’a Cultural Experience

Raiatea, french polynesia.

Duration 6 1/2 hrs

Delve into traditional Tahitian culture by cruising to nearby Tahaa to discover how vanilla is grown and black pearls are produced before an island lunch and relaxing on the island’s gorgeous beach.

After departing from the pier in a motorized catamaran, you will enjoy a wonderfully scenic cruise across a turquoise-blue lagoon to the island of Tahaa, which lies due north. Your first destination ashore is a vanilla farm. You will probably be greeted by the scent of the spice before arriving as 70% of the vanilla grown in French Polynesia is from Tahaa.

Expect to see and smell fragrant vanilla pods curing in the sun. You may also stroll among the rows of climbing orchids that produce the pods and learn how they are pollinated. There will be some time for shopping before continuing on with a short drive to Motu Pearl Village. Established in 1991, the village cultivates black pearls in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the surrounding lagoon. After hearing the fascinating story of how the pearls are produced, you may shop for jewelry and other items adorned with these prized treasures. Like vanilla, black pearls are synonymous with Tahaa, and both are mainstays of the economy.

After the visit, enjoy a cocktail or a fresh local beer before a traditional Polynesian buffet lunch is served while a live Polynesian group entertains you. It makes for an excellent introduction to the pareo show that follows. A pareo is a wraparound skirt that is essential to Tahitian dance. Finally, you will head for the beach of Motu Mahea to relax, sunbathe or get in the water before returning to the pier.

Eagle Preserve Rafting Float Adventure

Haines, alaska.

Raft down the gently flowing Chilkat River through a bald eagle preserve known for its virgin wilderness and abundant wildlife. Depart from the pier by coach and drive along the Haines Highway, a stretch of road so beautiful it has been designated a National Scenic Highway. The Highway follows the equally picturesque Chilkat River, the location of your rafting adventure. Upon arrival at the launch site, you will exchange your shoes for rubber boots and receive a life jacket. Following a safety briefing, you will board an 18-foot raft and begin slowly floating down the river. Surrounded by the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, the world's largest concentration of bald eagles, you will no doubt be awed by the natural beauty and serenity. The waters here are teeming with salmon that come here to spawn and their sheer numbers provide an endless supply of food for the eagles. You will have a front-row seat to observe this annual rite of nature, which ensures a healthy and abundant eagle population. The Chilkat Valley is home to 200 to 400 bald eagles, and more than 80 nests have been spotted in the preserve alone. You may also see bears and wolves along the riverbank, feasting on salmon. Enormous moose, some weighing up to 1,600 pounds, also frequent the preserve to feed on the summer vegetation. After approximately an hour and a half on the river, you will find yourself back at the launch site where you will disembark your raft and transfer back to the pier in Haines.

HIGHLIGHTS • Float down the meandering Chilkat River in an 18-foot raft. • Pass through a preserve with the world’s largest concentration of bald eagles. • Watch for bald eagles feasting on salmon by the riverside. • Try to spot other wildlife such as bears and moose. • Travel a National Scenic Highway on the way to and from the preserve.
