Swanton Berry Farm

25 swanton rd, davenport, ca 95017.

Swanton Berry Farm was founded in 1983 by Jim Cochran. “At that time, no one had grown strawberries organically on a commercially successful basis. The general consensus in the industry said it couldn’t be done. Five years later, Swanton Berry Farm would become the first certified organic strawberry farm in California (CCOF).

Just as the process of organic certification formalizes Swanton Berry Farm’s commitment to a set of ethics in our farming practices, a Union contract similarly formalizes our commitment to the human side of the farming equation. The fundamental question that drives this duality is why treat your food with a set of standards but not those who plant and harvest that same food?

In 1998, Swanton Berry Farm became the first organic farm in America to sign a contract with the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO.

The combination of organic farming practices with union labor is why Swanton Berry Farm is known for producing fruits, jams, and baked goods that are beyond compare. We are dedicated to doing things honorably, whether it’s how we grow our crops, or how we treat our workers. It’s a difference you can taste, come see for yourself.”

16021 ca-4, holt, ca 95234.

Victoria Island Farms blueberries are notable for their plumpness, taste, and freshness. Our blueberries go from field to package in record time. Within an hour of leaving the bush, our blueberries are cooled and packaged, and cooled again. They leave the farm in pre-cooled trucks.

Blueberries begin to ripen in May and are harvested until early July. Each field is harvested 3-5 times depending on ripening characteristics of the variety. Most varieties require a certain range of chilling hours (temperatures below 40 degrees) for optimal production.

During the summer harvest season, Victoria Island Farms opens up a portion of our blueberry fields to the public for U-Pick at the farm visits and purchase of pre-packed fresh blueberries. The 2021 u-pick season will run on weekends only from Saturday, May 15 to Sunday, June 20 with pre-packed fresh blueberries for sale at least through the end of June. The Gentle Barn teaches children about animals in a way that will change their perspective about themselves and the world around them. We want to show children that even though we all look different, we are all the same inside. Every living being has language and needs food, water, shelter, and love. Our programs follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to make sure that we support teachers' curricula.

We teach the children a wide variety of things including what animals eat, where they sleep, how they have families, why roosters crow, why pigs love mud, why goats chew, and how each species communicates through body language. Here at The Gentle Barn, kids gain an understanding of animals, see how much we all have in common, and get to expand their empathy for all living beings.

After a presentation that is geared to age and grade level, the children get to brush the horses, hug the cows, give the pigs tummy rubs, talk to the turkeys, play with the goats and the sheep, and so much more. It is an educational, hands-on experience that they will never forget. Our school program is appropriate for kids K-12.

Apricot Lane Farms was founded in 2011 by John and Molly Chester, and today spans 234 acres of countryside in Moorpark, California, just 40 miles north of Los Angeles. We regeneratively grow more than 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables and raise cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks with reverence on pastures and within orchards, while working in harmony (or a comfortable level of disharmony) within the dynamic ecosystem our farm is integrated with. The farm is certified organic and biodynamic.

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

Project Updates

We are thrilled to announce that after several years of collaboration and feedback with the City of Santa Clara and the community, construction on the Agrihood project began in June 2021. To commemorate the milestone, The Core Companies were joined by community members, project partners, and elected officials including City of Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor, Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, and Senator Bob Wieckowski, for a ceremonial groundbreaking celebration in September 2021.

We are grateful for all the community members who have shaped the Agrihood with their thoughtful input throughout this process. THANK YOU for taking the time to share your stories about why this critical housing and farm space is so important for Santa Clara. We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude for Mayor Gillmor, the City Council and the talented City staff for working with us to make Agrihood a reality. Their insightful guidance has helped the Agrihood become a special place – one that will promote health, wellness, comfort and joy for all Santa Clarans.

Because of everyone’s hard work, we’re closer than we’ve ever been to achieving our mission to bring an affordable, vibrant housing community to Santa Clara. The Agrihood’s 361 homes (181 of which are below-market), urban farm, retail and open space will provide a uniquely enjoyable place to live and gather for seniors, veterans, middle-income workers, and other community members. And it will connect Santa Clara’s contemporary urban living with our agricultural past. Vertical construction of Agrihood will take place over the next two years with Phase 1 of construction expected to be completed in 2023.

Our goal throughout this endeavor has been to provide the affordable housing that we urgently need in Santa Clara through a truly creative, community-driven process. Thank you for working with us to make that happen.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our plans for Agrihood’s urban farm space and visit the News section for our project timeline and construction updates, and communications from our team to the community.

SHINTA KAWAHARA FAMILY FARMS

The shinta and the kawahara families have worked on farms for over 100 years..

*Bachan Shinta started her Santa Clara Valley strawberry farm in the 1920s; rebuilding her strawberry farm following the Japanese-American internment. As she considered retirement in 1960, her son Kuni Shinta and his wife Bea Kawahara helped grow the business, founded Shinta Kawahara Company in 1965, and in 1973 moved their strawberry farm to Watsonville where favorable agricultural land was more available.

Today Kuni and Bea’s daughter Gwen and her husband Rod Koda operate the business as small independent farmers and work every day to grow and deliver the most delicious and the highest quality strawberries possible!  Our farm also has a long tradition of collaborating with many strawberry researchers in farm trials in order to contribute to the larger California strawberry industry.

To hear more about our family history and about Japanese American farmers in California you can listen to a podcast in which we were featured on America's Test Kitchen Proof  here .

*pronounced bAA-chan, endearment for grandmother in Japanese

See video from a day of harvest on our farm here .

KUNI BEA FARMS

Kuni and Bea laid much of the foundation for what the farm is today. In much the same way our California strawberries are integral to our farm’s operation. Even in perfect conditions strawberries require rigorous care and attention. By reserving part of the farm for our Kuni Bea strawberries we have the ability to take additional action to promote the health of this portion of our crop; this allows us to continue operations and offer regular gainful employment even when adverse conditions arise.

MONTEREY BAY FARMS ORGANIC STRAWBERRIES

Farmer Rod and Gwen have always been interested in the art and science of growing strawberries so when they fully took over day to day operations of the farm from Kuni and Bea they wanted to start an organic program at the farm.  Rod and Gwen view the addition of the organic program as their contribution to the long legacy of our family’s farm.

Our organic label is inspired by the nearby Monterey Bay, which provides us with ideal conditions to cultivate strawberries. Our proximity to the cooling Monterey Bay conditions allows us to let our strawberries ripen on the plant longer, which allows the fruit to develop sweetness and better flavor. The beautiful Monterey Bay is a reminder of our obligation to preserve our natural environment while providing for others in a responsible and sustainable way; because of this we have chosen to dedicate significant resources to promote organic food and have Monterey Bay Farms strawberries certified organic.

ABOUT ALBION STRAWBERRIES

A strawberry is not just a strawberry; in fact there are many varieties of strawberries! Strawberry varieties/cultivars are selected for various characteristics: taste, size, shape, aroma, production, fruiting season, and hardiness to plant/fruit physical stresses. Currently, we only grow Albion variety strawberries; a cultivar developed by Doug Shaw and Kirk Larson of the University of California, Davis. After years of strawberry cultivar grower trials at our farm and hearing glowing feedback from family, friends and strawberry lovers, we are passionate to grow Albion because of its classic strawberry taste and characteristics!
