Sample local specialties.

Whether it’s mulled wine, gingerbread, chestnuts, or Christstollen, no Christmas market visit is complete without regional treats.

Visit multiple markets

Each Christmas market is a little different and offers regional characteristics that you shouldn’t miss—from themed markets to crafts to delicacies.

Combine culture with sightseeing

While you’re there, don’t miss the fabulous cities and old towns of Europe and combine your visit with an exploration.

Buy Christmas gifts

Whether it’s for yourself or loved ones back home, bring back a few souvenirs for some surprising gifts under this year's Christmas tree.

Dress warmly

Even though the atmosphere is warm, temperatures in Europe can get freezing in the winter, so you better dress warmly and layer up.

Have cash on hand

The payment methods at Christmas markets can be more traditional than you might expect, so be prepared to have some cash on you.

This European Christmas Market itinerary takes you from Northern to South-Central Europe, starting in Belgium.

While other Northern European countries also have great markets, we can’t visit them all in one trip!

The itinerary is designed for travel by train or bus, so each stop is easily accessible using public transport.

You’d need about 3 weeks to cover all the places on this list. However, you can easily customize it if you only have a week or two.

The first stop on your Christmas market route is Belgium. We start our Christmas Market tour from the European capital of Brussels.

Two days in Brussels is enough time to enjoy the Christmas Market, visit all the main tourist attractions in the city, and take a day trip to neighboring cities.

Strolling through the streets of Brussels, adorned for Christmas, is a delight!

The majestic Christmas tree and market are located at the Grand Place, while the ice skating rink can be found at Place de Brouckère.

You must try Belgian waffles when in Brussels. They are quintessential Belgian delicacies. My favorite vegan waffles are from Veganwaff !

Budget backpacker option : Meininger Hostel is super highly rated. It is in a great location and a fantastic budget option for solo travelers!

A visit to Bruges and Ghent Christmas Markets makes for a perfect day trip from Brussels .

If you are in a rush, you can visit Bruges and Ghent in one day , as they are just a quick 20-minute train ride away from each other.

Otherwise, spend a day in each city to get the most out of the magical atmosphere of these medieval towns’ Christmas decorations.

Both cities have enchanting Christmas Markets with a backdrop of Flemish historic buildings along the charming canals.

  • Cologne Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 18th November to 24th December 2024

The Christmas Market in Cologne is one of the most beautiful in Germany. It spreads throughout the city with over 100 stalls offering German delicacies and various handmade Christmas gifts and ornaments.

There are 7 Christmas Markets in Cologne to enjoy, with the most popular one being the Christmas Market in front of the Cologne Cathedral.

4. Strasbourg, France

  • Strasbourg Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 27th November to 27th December 2024
  • Travel : 5h 30 min bus from Cologne

Strasbourg is a self-proclaimed capital of Christmas and is considered the oldest Christmas Market in the world, dating back to the 16th century!

You won’t be disappointed if your expectations are high after this introduction.

Christmas decorations in Strasbourg are almost extravagant – massive stuffed bears, ornaments, and gifts hanging from the windows.

Spend a day in Strasbourg strolling the cobblestone streets of La Petite France Quarter and admire artistically decorated Christmas ornaments and local product shops.

You will find the giant 100m tall Christmas tree and ice skating rink on Place Kleber, and more than 300 market stalls are scattered around the city center.

Strasbourg Cathedral is a majestic sight any time of the year, but in December, it is home to a lively Christmas Market as well!

Alsace is a famous wine region, so you know that Mulled wine must be delicious as well! Remember to try Alsacian Bretzel, a salty snack popular in the region.

Where to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Market?

TOP choice : Le Lohkäs is a traditional historical house in the heart of the city center.

Mid-range option :  Hotel des Arts is located just outside the Grand Ile, just a quick walk from all the attractions.

Backpacker Hostel : The People is perfectly located in Krutenau, a lively neighborhood slightly outside the historic center.

5. Colmar, France

  • Colmar Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 26th November to 29th December 2024
  • Travel : Take a train from Strasbourg. (30 min)

Colmar Christmas Market is like a concentrated version of the Strasbourg Christmas Market and it is a great stop if you’re visiting European Christmas markets by train.

I suggest spending 2 days in Colmar so you can also visit Alsace villages on a day trip.

A day in Colmar is enough time to visit all the main attractions and explore 6 different markets in the city center of Colmar, each set up as a separate mini-village with a different theme.

The narrow cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses of Colmar decked with Christmas decorations will make you feel like you’re in a Christmas movie.

Official Christmas market website : Christmas in Colmar

Where to stay in Colmar for Christmas Market?

Colmar is a small city, so as long as you are in the city center, you’re within walking distance of the Christmas market.

  • TOP Pick: Hotel Le Colombier

  • Budget Option: PAUL & PIA

  • Christmas Market in Riquewihr dates 2024: 29th November to 22nd December 2024
  • Christmas Market in Ribeauvillé dates 2024: First and second weekends of December
  • Travel : Christmas shuttle bus from Colmar

Alsace region is one of the most beautiful places to visit during Christmas time, so you should add the fairytale villages of Alsace to your itinerary.

The best way to visit the villages is on a day trip from Strasbourg or Colmar.

You don’t need a car as there are special Christmas shuttles available!

The villages along the Alsace wine route already look like they belong in a fairytale. Add Christmas decorations to the colorful half-timbered houses, and you have a recipe for an immaculate Christmas movie set.

If you want to visit several villages on the same day, you might consider booking a day tour of Alsace villages!

Riquewihr is the place to visit if you want to feel like you’re in Santa’s workshop. Immerse yourself in the holiday spirit, drink mulled wine, and buy handmade gifts in this hilltop village.

Visit Ribeauvillé for a unique Medieval Christmas Market experience. Travel back in time, and learn more about ancient Christmas traditions and practices.

7. Nuremberg, Germany

  • Nuremberg Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 29 November to 24 December 2024
  • Travel : 5h bus from Strasbourg

Germany has so many Christmas Markets that you could easily spend an entire December hopping from one to another and never get bored!

I picked Nuremberg as it is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas Markets in Germany. The tradition dates back to the 16th century, with the first mention in writing in 1628.

Also, it is ideally located in the middle of the country to connect this itinerary’s Western and Central European legs.

If you visit the Nuremberg Christmas Market on opening day, you’ll get to see the market’s symbol, Christkind—a young blonde woman dressed as an angel—who opens the market and poses for photos with the children.

8. Prague, Czech Republic

  • Prague Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 30th November 2024 to 6th January 2025
  • Travel : 3h 30min bus from Nuremberg

Prague is a city that feels like it belongs in a fairytale any time of the year, but it is a must-stop on Europe Christmas itinerary and one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter .

Cobblestone streets, picturesque buildings, and a castle on top of the hill?

Yes, all of that and more! Christmas decorations only enhance its ethereal vibes and it is a must-stop on your Christmas in Europe itinerary.

There are many Markets to choose from in Prague, but the main two are Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square in the city center. At Old Town Square, you can enjoy live performances and Christmas movie projections.

For a complete fairytale experience, visit the Christmas Market at Prague Castle, where you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time while strolling through the cobblestone streets of the historic castle area.

9. Bratislava, Slovakia

  • Bratislava Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 22nd November 2024 to 6th January 2025
  • Travel : 5 h train or 4h 30 min bus from Prague

Next up on our Christmas Market Itinerary is the capital of Slovakia – Bratislava. Bratislava is not often on the list of the best Christmas Markets in Europe, so it is almost like a hidden gem.

Christmas Market in Bratislava is not as extravagant as some on this list. It is smaller, cozier, and less crowded.

Main Market is located on Main Square, with a few stalls that extend through to Franciscan Square. You can also enjoy an Ice Skating rink at square Hviezdoslavovo námestie, for a perfect winter wonderland experience.

The best viewpoint is from the Old Town Hall. You get an excellent view of the Market beneath you and Bratislava castle in the distance.

Mid-range hotel option: Elisabeth Old Town is perfectly located in the city center and a great option to enjoy Christmas in Bratislava.

10. Vienna, Austria

  • Vienna Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 8th November 2024 to 6th January 2025
  • Travel : 1 hour bus from Bratislava

Austria is home to some of the best Christmas markets Europe has to offer.

Vienna is traditionally the most visited Christmas Market destination in Europe. That shouldn’t come as a surprise as they have one of the largest Christmas markets in Europe.

You can visit more than 10 different Christmas Markets in Vienna, all around the city.

Keep in mind that different markets have different opening times and not all of them are open for the entire duration of the festive season.

The best way to get around is to get a metro pass, as December in Vienna is very cold, and Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market is too far to walk to anyway.

You will find the main Christmas Market opposite the Rathaus city hall. With over 150 market stalls it is the biggest Market in Vienna. There is also a huge ice-skating rink around the trees for a unique ice-skating experience.

Altwiener is the oldest Christmas Market in Vienna, dating back to the 18th century. Today it offers a uniquely traditional Christmas Market experience.

I love how most Christmas Markets in Vienna had vegan food options!

Official Christmas market website : Christmas in Vienna

Where to stay in Vienna?

Mid-range hotel option : Room 55 is a great mid-range hotel option, close to the metro which means you’re in the center in a matter of minutes!

Budget backpacker option: Hostel Ruthensteiner is super well-rated, and I’ve never been disappointed with a Wombats Hostel .

11. Graz, Austria

  • Graz Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 22nd November to 24th December 2024
  • Travel : 2h 30min train or bus from Vienna

While you could go directly to Ljubljana from Vienna, it would be a shame to miss out on Graz. This small Austrian town is a perfect stop for a cozy Christmas Market break.

One day in Graz is enough to visit all the Markets and main tourist attractions, such as Schlossberg and the Clock Tower, Graz Hauptplatz, and the City Hall.

Murinsel or Mur Island is another cool spot to visit. It is an artificial floating island in the middle of the Mur River.

You can visit 12 different Christmas Markets around Graz. The biggest Market is the Christmas Market on Hauptplatz.

Remember to stop by the Landhaushof courtyard to see the famous nativity ice sculpture!

Mid-range hotel: Hotel Drei Raben is a good budget option, close to the city center and well-rated.

Luxury hotel option: I love Schlossberghotel for a luxurious accommodation option in Graz. The view from the rooms is incredible!

12. Ljubljana, Slovenia

  • Ljubljana Christmas Market Dates 2024 : Unconfirmed
  • Travel : 2h 30min bus from Graz

The capital of Slovenia is home to one of the most underrated Christmas Markets in Europe.

Ljubljana city center is rather small and makes for a perfectly cozy Christmas Market destination.

Christmas Market stalls are on both sides of the river running through the city centre. Visit the Ljubljana Castle for a stunning panoramic view of the city and fairytale vibes.

I especially loved Prešeren Square, which is decorated with twinkling lights mimicking the night sky.

Where to stay in Ljubljana for Christmas Market?

Budget backpacker option: AdHoc Hostel is the best-rated hostel in Ljubljana. Located in the heart of the old city, it is a great budget option for solo travelers!

Mid-range hotel option : I loved my stay in Viva Rooms . The location was absolutely perfect, just a 5-minute walk from Prešeren Square, and you could see the Church of the Annunciation from the window.

BONUS: Day trip to the Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a place from your winter fairytale dreams. Especially if you are lucky and get to see it covered in snow. It is a must-see destination that should be on your Slovenia itinerary.

Lake Bled is just a short 1 hour 20 min bus ride from Ljubljana. Check the bus schedule and prices here !

Alternatively, you can book a day tour from Ljubljana that combines a visit to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj.

It’s magical in the winter!

13. Zagreb, Croatia

  • Zagreb Christmas Market Dates 2024 : 30th November 2024 to 7th January 2025
  • Travel : 2h 30min bus or train from Ljubljana

When you visit Zagreb’s Christmas Market, you will find it hard to believe that Zagreb didn’t even have a Christmas Market just a few years ago!

When I first moved to Zagreb in 2011, the Christmas Market was centralized in one giant tent on the main Ban Jelačić square that served mulled wine and sausages.

Today, with over 10 locations around the city, Advent in Zagreb is a winner of multiple Best European Christmas Market titles! That makes it a must-stop on this European Christmas market itinerary.

It is hard to pick the best Christmas Market in Zagreb because each one offers a slightly different experience.

Zrinjevac Market is a splendid, luxurious market with an enchanting ice skating rink. Trees are covered in twinkling Christmas lights, and as you walk under them, you feel like you are in a fairytale. Ice skating in Ice Park is one of the best things to do in Zagreb !

You will find the best viewpoint and photo location at Gornji Grad Market. The viewing platform gets a holiday makeover and is a must-visit stop on your Christmas Market itinerary. The atmosphere is calmer and more intimate, so grab a cup of hot mulled wine and enjoy!

A weekend in Zagreb is a perfect city break to add towards the end of this itinerary, as Advent in Zagreb lasts until 7th January 2025.

14. Budapest, Hungary

  • Budapest Christmas Market Dates 2024 : Unconfirmed
  • Travel : 5h train or bus from Zagreb

Finally, you will end your Christmas Market tour in Hungary’s capital – Budapest.

I’ve saved the best for last!

Budapest is my personal all-around favorite Christmas Market destination. I’ve visited multiple times, and every time the holiday spirit in the city enchants me.

Plan to spend 2 days in Budapest to get the best of both sides of the city. Spend one day exploring the Pest side, and discover the medieval Christmas Market inside the Budapest castle.

The main Market takes place in front of St. Stephan Basilica. Another great market is at Vörösmarty Square, with plenty of food stalls.

My go-to Christmas Market food in Budapest is Kürtőskalács. You can find vegan Kürtőskalács in a small stand on the corner of Andrassy and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky streets!

Budapest is also one of the best European party cities , so you can stay here until the NYE!

Where to stay in Budapest?

  • TOP choice : Dorothea Hotel
  • Mid-range option : Opera Garden Hotel
  • Backpacker budget option: I loved my stay in Wombat’s hostel , the location is unbeatable, right in the city centre.

What to wear at a Christmas Market?

Christmas Markets are open-air events, and December in Europe is cold. Therefore, remember to dress for the weather!

You might have seen photos of women strolling the Markets in jumper dresses. Trust me, it was just for a photo or in the unlikely event that it was 15℃.

Therefore, layering will be your best friend. A good, thick, winter jacket is a must, and so are waterproof boots.

Wear a thermal underneath your jumper, double socks at night, and tights under your pants if it is something you like. I personally don’t find it necessary most of the time. A good warm scarf and gloves are a must!

Yes, full winter equipment is crucial when temperatures are under 0℃.

Check out my article on how to pack in a personal item backpack only , if you want to try out minimal packing this year!

christmas decorations in zagreb advent zrinjevac

You can visit all the Christmas Markets on this itinerary using public transport. Most destinations are accessible by train, and if not, by bus. Use Flixbus for international coaches, and Trainline for train tickets.

Depending on the size of the Market, you can visit most Christmas Markets in 2 days. For smaller towns like Colmar, one day is enough to see all the attractions, while you will need at least two full days to discover Budapest.

Most Christmas Markets are open from late November until Christmas Day , but they become increasingly crowded as Christmas approaches. To avoid crowds, plan your visit during the first weeks of December and try to avoid weekends; markets tend to get very busy on Friday nights and Saturdays.

Most Christmas Markets on this itinerary get very cold in December and they are outdoor events. While there might be outdoor heaters next to the food stands, it is still freezing most of the time. Expect temperatures around 0℃ during the night to a maximum of 10℃ during the day in December.

Some European Christmas Markets close on Christmas Day. Yet, many stay open until New Year’s Day or a week into the New Year. These markets from this itinerary are still open after Christmas: Zagreb, Croatia Budapest, Hungary Ljubljana, Slovenia  Prague, Czech Republic  Ghent, Belgium Colmar, France Bruges, Belgium Brussels, Belgium

Hit up all of the classic Christmas markets in Innsbruck , Munich , Strasbourg , Nuremberg , and Würzburg on this train tour that goes through Germany , France , and Austria . Shop for intricate woodcrafts such as nutcrackers and cuckoo clocks as well as Hummel figurines in the Bavarian Alpine village of Oberammergau before moving on to Germany’s Black Forest region.

Explore the Christmas markets in Strasbourg’s small squares. In December , the entire old town is decorated with a 100-foot-tall Christmas tree standing proudly amidst it all.

Stop by Munich’s historic city center, the Marienplatz , to see its remarkable glockenspiel, whose figurines represent essential elements of German history.

After a visit to Würzburg Christmas market , your tour concludes at the historic Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt that dates back to 1628. Located in the heart of Nuremberg’s Old Town, the market is dubbed “the little city of wood and cloth” because it is made up of hundreds of wooden stalls. 11 Magical European Cities to Explore Christmas Markets This Winter

Christmas markets in Europe are the stuff holiday dreams are made of…unless your dreams are about stuffing turkeys, then you might want to try elsewhere. Picture strolling through quaint cobblestone streets, hands warmed by mugs of hot mulled wine, while festive stalls twinkle like the world’s most festive beacon.

Forget department store Santas; here, authenticity comes with a side of savory foods and sweet gingerbread treats. And each city’s market has its own charm, from Germany’s fairy-tale landscapes to France’s alpine chateaux vibes.

Feel free to empty your wallets on artisanal crafts and quirky knick-knacks, because, hey, holiday spirit comes at a price. But let’s face it, these markets are worth every sparkle and snowflake, offering an unparalleled yuletide experience without the Scrooges.

Nuremberg, Germany

A vibrant holiday stall decorated with pine branches, lights, and various Christmas ornaments, including Santa figures and green baubles, showcasing festive decorations.

Step right into the festive wonderland at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, where you can truly overdose on holiday cheer. This legendary market dates back to the 16th century, making it older than your great-grandma’s fruitcake recipe.

The market spans Hauptmarkt Square, boasting over 180 stalls selling everything from intricate decorations to the most sugary treats your dentist warned you about.

Brussels, Belgium

One fascinating fact about Brussels’ market is its mesmerizing light and sound show at the Grand Place. This spectacle transforms the iconic square into a dazzling wonderland, making even the grinchiest among us drop our grumbles.

Strasbourg, France

With roots tracing back to 1570, it’s a fact that Strasbourg’s market pioneers any yuletide comparison, setting the standards for merry revelry. The enchanting stalls burst with ornaments, tempting everyone to channel their inner Santa with a credit card.

And did you know it’s most famous for its handmade woolen goods? Yeah, nothing screams holiday spirit like toasty mittens and the smell of cinnamon buns wafting through the chilly air. It’s a classic cozy charm wrapped in an Arctic ambiance.

Basel, Switzerland

Basel’s Christmas market lit with warm, glowing decorations, showcasing a large illuminated star and various festive displays against a twilight sky.

This market only stretches back to 1978, but it sprawls across two squares – Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz – offering everything but the kitchen sink… unless it’s cozily decorated, of course.

Prague, Czech Republic

It boasts a jaw-dropping display of decorations, stalls brimming with local delicacies, and music that’ll have you humming jingle bells involuntarily. And based on popular votes, Zagreb’s market has repeatedly clinched the title of Europe’s best Christmas market.

Copenhagen, Denmark

A bustling Christmas market in Copenhagen with two large reindeer sculptures wearing red harnesses, set among rustic red stalls selling holiday goods, with people strolling and chatting under a cloudy sky.

15 of the Best: Christmas Markets in Europe

15 of the Best: Christmas Markets in Europe

What's New

When the lights start to twinkle and the scent of mulled wine is in the air, it's time to head to a Christmas market. Embrace local traditions, festive treats and the charm of this special season with luxury travel writer Tim Johnson's guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe.

Festive lights and local delights

I’ve been to dozens of festive destinations, and I’ll tell you: the Christmas markets in Europe are pure magic. The mouth-watering scent of local food on the grill or in the oven – sausages and chestnuts and so much more – with festive music infusing everything with cheer. A nip in the air, with a warm beverage. And so much to sample, browse and buy.  And my very favourite part? No two markets are created alike. Each town and city has its own atmosphere, specialities, and colourful characters. Visiting one just entices you to experience more. Here are 15 of the very best, all across Europe.

Budapest, Hungary: East meets West

Best for: foodies.

Budapest is a city filled with the truly unforgettable. For example: once you sail along the Danube after dark, the sight of all the sparkling lights – on the Chain Bridge and illuminating parliament and palaces climbing away from the rivera – will live in your memory forever. And plenty of things are better here in winter, including a soak in the Széchenyi Thermal Baths , enveloped by a cloud of steam in the cold air. And, of course, the city’s Christmas markets.

Budapest.jpg

The main market unfolds on Vörösmarty Square from 15 November until 31 December 2024. Just getting there is a glittering experience, walking under the lights of pedestrianised Fashion Street . At the 100 stalls here (which are also easily reached by metro), families will have plenty to keep them busy, from the playhouse and craft classes to the kid-sized miniature railway.  Foodies, too. This is one of the best markets for cuisine, especially dishes with their delicious roots in Central and Eastern Europe. Think: stuffed cabbage and lepeny (a traditional flatbread), and of course, a hearty bowl of Hungarian goulash. Finished off with strudel or sekler cake – the famous Budapest chimney cake.

TRAVEL TIP?

Fill up, then bed down at Kempsinki Hotel Corvinus , where some of the cushy, recently renovated rooms overlook Fashion Street.

Munich, Germany: Bavarian magic

Best for: city and sylvan pleasures in one place .

Munich is the city where all your Bavarian dreams come true – and that’s doubly the case during Christkindlmarkt season. Frosty steins of beer, bratwurst, lederhosen, you name it, Munich delivers. And Münchners have been gathering in Marienplatz to shop and celebrate Christmas since the 14th century.

Munich 3.jpg

In the shadow of the neo-gothic New Town Hall, and lit up by the thousands of candles adorning a seven-story Christmas tree, you’ll find more than 100 stalls, completely filling the square from 25 November until 24 December 2024. But Munich is a city with multiple markets, and you’re best-advised to explore. Those looking for an idyllic experience – and some of the best festive food – should head to the centre of the English Garden , one of the world’s largest urban parks.  It’s an easy trip from the main square – take a tram, then walk the rest of the way along well-maintained paths through the forest. Under the five-level wooden pagoda of the Chinese Tower, you’ll feel a million miles from the city. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage, then enjoy the food stands, which serve everything from rotisserie chicken to spaetzle and salads, plus sausages and something called brizza, a beautiful combination of pretzel and pizza. And families should definitely spend some time at the Residenz . Bavaria’s Wittelsbach royal family began construction of this palace in 1385, and continued to build over the centuries, resulting in a rambling, 130-room redoubt. Every year a Christmas village pops up in some of the 10 courtyards, with a focus on kid-friendly attractions like puppet shows. Lots of fun.

Spend the night at Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski , a grand hotel literally built for a king – and home to Munich’s finest living room.

Dresden, Germany: A frozen jewel

Best for: treasure-hunters  .

In many ways, Dresden is a hidden treasure. Nicknamed the “jewel box,” its beauty is sometimes overlooked by travellers, perhaps because it was once part of East Germany and thus off the main tourist track. Home to generations of Saxon kings, these aristocrats built a brilliant place on the broad bends of the Elbe River. Walk the elaborate chambers of the royal palace and the fascinating galleries of the rambling, 18th-century Dresden Zwinger . Then stroll just a few steps over to the Altmarkt square. Here, for the 590th time, the Striezelmarkt – Germany’s oldest Christmas market – will absolutely wow you. This is a place that thinks big. Marvel at the 14.6-metre step pyramid (which holds a record in the Guinness World Records), laden and lined with whimsical festive figures, and walk through the world’s largest candle arch. Ride the Ferris Wheel and then browse the 240 stalls for everything from delicate lacework to handmade wooden toys.

Why Dresden - The Surroundings at the Taschenbergpalais in Saxony_High Res_27681.jpg

Fortify yourself with some rahmklecks, a Dresden speciality that is a bread roll stuffed with ham and cheese and topped with a beautiful dollop of sour cream. Then walk along Prager Strasse to experience many smaller markets along the Christmas Mile.

Built by Augustus the Strong – the most illustrious of the Saxon kings – Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski feels even more like a palace after its recent renovation.

Berlin, Germany: So many markets

Best for: those who love variety.

Berlin’s capital is one of the world’s best walking cities, a place where you can stroll through history. Start at Checkpoint Charlie and trace the remnants of the Berlin Wall all the way to the Brandenburg Gate . Continue along the winding pathways of Tiergarten, which in winter (from 22 November 2024 to 12 January 2025) transforms into an illuminated winter wonderland , complete with ice skating and Yuletide tunes.  And in addition to the festivities in the park, Berlin offers some 100 other Christmas markets. Ambling from one to the next is a truly pleasurable experience (in a pinch, you can also reach all of them on the S-Bahn and U-Bahn railway system). Generally running from 25 November 2024 until the end of December, you have so many wonderful choices.

Berlin.jpeg

There’s romance and fun at Charlottenburg Palace , the market set at the former home of Queen Sophie Charlotte. The palace lights up at night, and marching bands moving through the hundred stalls selling everything from silk items to ceramics. It’s a good option for families, as well, with two carousels and a Ferris wheel. Spandau is the city’s largest Christmas market, spreading out from the main square to the cobblestones of old town. Two of the biggest highlights here: a nativity scene with live animals, and a stage where music rings out throughout the day. And for a local experience, on 7 and 8 December 2024, the neighbourhood around the Art Deco Brohan Museum comes together to celebrate. It’s cosy and warm, with arts and crafts from suppliers based in the immediate area, homemade foods, and performances from local schools and dance clubs.

Perhaps the most famous place to stay in Germany, Hotel Adlon Kempinski sits in the heart of it all, right at the Brandenburg Gate.

St. Moritz: Ultimate Winter

Best for: ice queens and kings .

Perhaps no place on earth embraces winter better than St Moritz. Not just an upscale ski town, here palatial hotels, with a sugary-white glaze of snow, look like homes of fairytale princesses and princes. Just a walk through the winding streets in the heart of town will feel like a stroll through a storybook.  And the feelings of winter fantasy continue at their Christmas market, one of the fanciest you’ll find anywhere. Arrive in town by riding the Glacier Express through Alpine switchbacks and tunnels, and across trestles with soaring views down to snow-bound villages below. Then join jet-setters and celebrities and even royalty, browsing a number of pop-up markets in squares and pedestrian streets that feature upscale goods like handmade jewellery, crafted from stones sourced just nearby.

Close to the centre of town and right at the foot of the cable car, enjoy a regal sleep at Grand Hotel des Bains Kempsinki .

Riga, Latvia: Old town delights

Best for: history buffs .

Riga just might be Europe’s most underrated city. Built by the Baltic Sea, the Latvian capital has been a centre of international trade since its founding in 1201. That wealth and power is still evident across its matchless Old Town , which has been meticulously preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the history and architecture, from its medieval core to the greatest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe.

Christmas Market Riga - copyright Live Riga.JPG

And all of that is so much prettier at Christmas. The Old Town Christmas Market runs from 29 December 2024 to 2 January 2025, on Doma Square. The place where Riga’s heart beats, seven streets meet at the square, and it’s surrounded by some of the city’s greatest landmarks, including the grand cathedral , topped by its iconic weathercock, and the Venetian Renaissance-style Art Museum Riga Bourse . Climb up to the second floor and look out the window for a colourful view of the market below. In addition to all the usual delights, look for traditional Latvian touches. Sip black balsam – the national liquor. Sample piragi, little buns filled with bacon and sautéed onions. And amongst the gingerbread and hand-woven mittens at the stalls, look for jars of Latvian honey, a treat you can take home.

Walk right from the market to your warm, stylish room at Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga , which sits at the entrance to Old Town across from the Latvian National Opera and Ballet theatre .

Salzburg, Austria: The sounds of Christmas

Best for: music lovers .

This is, of course, the place where the hills come alive with the sound of music, a city immortalised in the popular 1965 film starring Julie Andrews. And a visit here always feels like stepping into an imagined world. A wonderland, especially in winter, set on the banks of a serpentine river, beneath towers and church spires and an imposing hilltop fortress.

Salzburg.jpg

Running from 24 November 2024 to 1 January 2025, the city’s main Christmas market sets up right in the middle of town, on Cathedral and Residenz Squares. Salzburgers have been gathering for these festivities since the 15th century. This a market known for its theatre and music. Dozens of choirs perform, and casual visitors are invited to join in for sing-alongs. Musicians perform on turmblasen (wind instruments). Parades march through, and children are entertained with readings of Christmas stories. And every Sunday, the Christ Child visits, flanked by his angels.

Built on a ridge some 1,000 metres up, Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden welcomes you to stay amidst mountain marvels, just 30 minutes from Salzburg.

Innsbruck, Austria: Olympic-sized wonders

Best for: those who love the outdoors .

Straddling the glacier-fed River Inn, nestled in a long, narrow valley surrounded by the snow-kissed Alps, this small city has welcomed the world twice for the Winter Olympics, in 1964 and 1976. Now it draws anyone who loves to glide down the slopes. Or, you know, just enjoy the apres-ski.

Innsbruck 2.jpg

It is home to the Imperial Palace – a principal residence of the Habsburgs – and the iconic 500-year-old Golden Roof, so the Christmas markets here have a dramatic, historic backdrop. The main market, which stretches out along the cobblestones of the Old Town from 15 November to 23 December 2024, has its own soundtrack, provided by brass bands – Austrian Turmbläser – playing from the Golden Roof. But essentially the whole city transforms for the holidays. Meander down Kiebachgasse, which transforms into a fairy tale lane, complete with costumed characters. Shop the stalls on Maria Theresien Street, which sit under trees adorned with glittering lights. And families should head to the riverside Marktplatz, where kids can ride a carousel and enjoy stories and puppet shows.

Stay nearby at Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol , a ski-in, ski-out resort right on the slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps.

Malaga, Spain: Merry on the Med

Best for: those who love sunny, seaside celebrations .

Thoughts of Andalusia inevitably feature sun and sand. After all, this is one of Europe’s most famous and beloved beach destinations. And the Spanish love to celebrate – perhaps more than anyone else. What could be better than Christmas festivities, all caressed by gentle, salty sea breezes? While you won’t find ice-skating and snowmen like in Germany and Austria, Malaga lights up from late November until early January. That’s literally true along Calle Larios , where sparkling angels hover above this shopping street. You’ll find a handful of really nice markets, too, with all the traditional things – garlands and toys and crafts. The two biggest: at Paseo del Parque, in the historic centre of town. And at Muelle Uno, right next to the Med, where you can watch the sun set into the sea as the sparkling illuminations of evening rise.

Malaga.jpg

Stay nearby at Kempinski Hotel Bahia Marbella Estepona , a terracotta oasis set next to an Eden of tropical gardens, the beach, and three pools.

Sofia, Bulgaria: Germany meets Bulgaria

Best for: so much culture, so close together .

When you think of spending time in a European capital, Sofia may not be the first destination that pops into your mind. But sitting in the shadow of Mount Vitosha, a number of cultures come together here, intersecting with natural wonders nearby. Shimmering onion domes and Ottoman minarets and Soviet monuments, with waterfalls and ski slopes just outside of town.

Bulgaria.jpg

And Christmas markets, too. Good ones. Although the phenomenon is new to Sofia. The first one, and the largest – Deutscher Weihnachtsmarkt – first opened just over a decade ago. Running from 15 November 2024 until just before Christmas, the stalls in City Garden bring together German and Bulgarian traditions. Start here, then walk to two others nearby, each with their own charms. Christmas Fest, at the National Palace of Culture , offers many live performances – everything from concerts to circus shows. And Christmas Park on Slaveykov Square is probably the best market for locally made handicrafts and fresh products from Bulgarian farms.

For a magical snowy experience, stay nearby at Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko , a picture-perfect resort next to a gondola lift in the Pirin Mountains.

Basel, Switzerland: So many Swiss pleasures

Best for: next-level swiss.

A city built on the Rhine River next to the borders with France and Germany, Basel is a beautiful place. There’s a lovingly preserved old town, complete with a medieval town hall. Plus art and culture at dozens of museums (by some counts, the most in Switzerland).

Basel 2.jpg

And, one of Europe’s absolute best Christmas markets , which this year will run from 28 November to 23 December 2024. Some 155 stalls cover two big squares. At Münsterplatz , a glittering Christmas tree rises in front of Basel’s cathedral. And on Barfüsserplatz , meet your friends near the Barfüsserkirche, at the 13-metre Christmas pyramid. Both the food and the handicrafts here are definitely next level. In addition to the usual (delicious) fare like sausages, you can dine on Swiss specialities such as Läckerli (a local kind of gingerbread) and ooey-gooey raclette. And look for cool, unexpected items like hand-painted baubles and Christmas cookie moulds with intricate 14th-century motifs.

Combine your trip to Basel with a stay nearby at Kempinski Palace Engelberg , where you can rest after a busy day at their huge rooftop spa with views of epic peaks all around.

Rome, Italy: La dulce Christmas

Best for: italian flair.

As the saying goes: all roads lead to Rome. And there’s so much to see and experience in the Eternal City, from hopping between the bars and restaurants in hip Trastevere to climbing the stairs in the iconic Colosseum . Add to your list of sites: the Christmas markets. In addition to small ones in famous locations like the base of the Spanish Steps, the main market has long been held around the bubbling fountain at Piazza Navona. The big, long, open space (easily accessed by city bus) was once a stadium, back in the First Century AD. Kids will love the carousel and puppet shows. And a nice culinary feature: the food served up here is sourced from the surrounding Lazio region of Italy. Another one to check out: Giftland , which will be held in a former bus depot on Piazza Ragusa. A little hipper than most, this market sells vintage items, vinyl records, organic cosmetics and cool, indie-style Christmas music.

Rome.jpg

Pop over to Vatican City to see their amazing decorations, including a huge Christmas tree and nativity scene in St Peter’s Square.

London, UK: Smart splendour

Best for: big celebrations in grand places .

From Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge , London looks good at any time of year – but especially spruced up for Christmas. Between joining the crush of shoppers at Harrods and strolling through the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland , make a little time for the markets.  Rather than one central site, London’s Christmas markets are scattered across numerous, beautiful locations. At graceful, Victorian Leadenhall Market , the Lord Mayor of London himself will switch on the twinkling lights on 14 November 2024, and until 25 December 2024 you can browse for crafts and vintage goods. Stalls and carol singers pop up around the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. Starting on 12 November, Santa will park his (1884, hand-painted) sleigh in the West Piazza of Covent Garden under massive Christmas bells (with some 100 places to eat nearby). And for a twist: head to the revitalized King’s Cross for a Mexican Christmas market, complete with a cumbia band and piñatas.

London.jpg

Right on the banks of the Thames, after 8 November 2024 Battersea Power Station becomes the best place in town to go for a skate, with three interconnected ice rinks surrounding a Christmas tree.

Brussels, Belgium: Winter wonders

Best for: sweet treats .

Famously the headquarters for the European Union and NATO, Belgium’s compact capital is surprisingly cosy in the winter. Grab a Trappistes Rochefort 10 in a warm little pub. Tuck into a stack of Liege waffles or the local savoury fave, mussels and chips. Take your pick of some of the world’s best chocolates (paired with a cup of hot chocolate). Then make your way to the Grand-Place .

Brussels.jpeg

Because this spot, with its stepped roofs and guild houses and gothic Town Hall, is the heart of the city’s Christmas market, which runs from 29 November 2024 to 5 January 2025. The festivities, and some 250 chalets, sprawl more than two kilometres over the cobblestones through a number of interconnected squares – Bourse, Place Sainte-Catherine and Marché aux Poissons. There’s a Ferris wheel and a carousel and at night, a sound and light show. And in this very international city, take the opportunity to sample some very Belgian fare at the many pop-up restaurants. Perhaps some smouteballen – sweet dumplings that are deep-fried, finished off with a little bit of jenever (gin).

Satisfy your sweet tooth at Choco-Story Brussels , which walks you through the history of chocolate, includes a live praline-making demonstration and, happily, finishes with tasty samples.

Colmar, France: Joyeux Noël!

Best for: alsactian delicacies .

Just south of Strasbourg, Colmar is a fairytale town of half-timbered houses lining canals. And they go all out to celebrate the holidays. What’s better than one Christmas market? Try six.  Stroll the cobblestones under sparkling lights, perhaps with a cup of steaming mulled wine in hand. At the Gourmet Market (26 November to 30 December 2024), nine chalets serve up the creations of nine different local chefs, preparing Alsatian dishes with ingredients from nearby farms. You’ll find more of Alsace to taste at Place Jeanne D’Arc (25 November to 22 December 2024), which recreates a charming regional village with Christmas cottages. Stalls sell everything wine from local vineyards to locally sourced charcuterie. And inside the medieval Koifhus (25 November to 22 December 2024) some 20 regional craftsmen and artists – hatters, potters, woodcarvers, jewellers, cabinet makers, ceramists – offer products they’ve created with their own hands.

Colmar.jpg

Families should check out La Petite Venise , which has the most kid-friendly market – a carousel, hot apple juice, and a letter box for children to send their gift requests to Santa.

If you enjoyed this, why not inspire another discovery with this feature about local festivals ?
