Did you know?

The Latin adjective diurnus means “pertaining to a day, daily”; English diurnal stems ultimately from this word. When Latin developed into French, diurnus became a noun, jour, meaning simply “day” The medieval French derivative journee meant either “day” or “something done during the day,” such as work or travel. Middle English borrowed journee as journey in both senses, but only the sense “a day’s travel” survived into modern usage. In modern English, journey now refers to a trip without regard to the amount of time it takes. The verb journey developed from the noun and is first attested in the 14th century.

More About Journey

What does journey mean.

A journey is a trip, especially one to a faraway place that takes place over a long period of time.

The word trip can refer to any instance of traveling from one place to another, no matter how long or short it is. The word journey , though, typically implies a long trip—one that’s at least several hours, and perhaps several months or even years. It also often implies adventure—a journey might even be a quest . A journey may or may not have a planned destination other than whatever lies ahead.

The word is also commonly used in a figurative way to liken any lengthy process or progress to such a trip, as in Life is a journey, with many interesting detours.

Journey can also be used as a verb meaning to make a long trip, as in We must journey to the land beyond the mountains.

Example: My favorite books are about people who make epic journeys around the world.

Where does journey come from?

The first records of the word journey come from around the 1200s. It comes from the Middle English word journee , meaning “day,” ultimately from unattested Vulgar Latin diurnāta , meaning “a day’s time” or “a day’s work.” In English, the meaning of the word journey originally meant something like “a day’s travel,” but eventually came to mean “a long trip.”

A journey can last a day but the word usually refers to longer trips. The word is sometimes preceded with the mode of transportation that’s used, as in The city is reachable only by a long train journey. Discussion of journeys often involves their destination or purpose. When people say, “It’s the journey , not the destination,” they mean that the significance and value of a journey is what happens along the way, from moment to moment, as opposed to the achievement of its ultimate goal.

Definitely a busy beginning to a month packed-full with everything and then some. But Rebekah and I feel inordinately blessed to have these opportunities, and to experience such abundance, and to have so much to share.

What a rich blessing it is to truly live!

The writer of First Timothy put it well when he expressed the following thought in chapter six: “In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” ( 1 Tim 6:19 ).

Language is like a tapestry; different parts of the world have their own phrases, idioms, and slang words constantly changing. The United States, with its huge size, is no different. Its many different areas have given rise to many phrases that people from other parts of the country may find hard to understand. Let’s go through a language journey to help you understand ten phrases Northerners find hard to understand.

Life is a journey of change and growth, and as the years go by, so do our thoughts, habits, and experiences. Accepting the changes that come with aging shows how rich our unique stories are. Sometimes we do things that seem to say, “I’m too old for this.” Whether it’s trying to figure out the latest slang or realizing that you don’t have as much energy as you did when you were younger, these times show how beautiful and complicated life can be.

1. Dag Nab It

People in the South first used the phrase “Dag nab it” in their speech. They might say this when someone is slightly annoyed, upset, or frustrated. But since it’s not a strong swear word or curse, it’s a way to show irritation without using stronger language. We don’t know where it came from, but it’s thought to be a polite way of saying, “God damn it.”

An individual reveals their secret source of jokes they share with their partner every evening before showering. They set up their Android to send them a joke every day at 5 pm but keep the origin of the jokes a secret. They enjoy keeping this little secret from their significant other as a way to maintain the fun and humor in their relationship.

2. Fiddle Faddle

The word “fiddle-faddle” is used to joke about something being silly, unimportant, or of little value. It means that the subject at hand is not important enough to be thought about carefully. This phrase most likely comes from the idea of messing around with something for fun when it doesn’t really matter or have any value.

Acknowledging the effort and time invested in hosting, you can express your fatigue from the day’s activities. This casual mention is a hidden cue for your guests to depart, understanding that you need rest and recovery.

3. Livin’ High on the Hog

The saying “livin’ high on the hog” comes from farming. When a pig is raised for food, the best cuts of meat come from its upper body, which includes the belly and ribs. People say these cuts are the best and tastiest. “Livin’ high on the hog” means enjoying life’s better points, which are usually linked to money, comfort, and style.

With the developing world, the new generations are keen on changing workplace norms for good to bring about substitutes that many have dreamed about but have yet to act for. Youngsters with fresh minds and vigilant eyes are looking to bring significant changes in the professional lives of numerous people by refusing some of these usual practices.

4. Peckerwood

The word “Peckerwood” has changed over time and can mean different things in different places and situations. This word describes a white person from a country or working-class background in some parts of the South. But it’s important to remember that it can be used in an insulting way. It can also mean someone is stupid or bad at their job, especially in African American Vernacular English (AAVE).

The notion of attributing luck to specific items, such as rings or pendants, is a common belief rooted in blind faith. Wearing these items is thought to ensure success, but there’s no scientific basis for this claim. Our achievements stem from our efforts and decisions, not from arbitrary items we carry.

5. Come Hell or High Water

When someone is determined to get something done, no matter how hard or trying things get, they are said to have “resolute determination.” It shows that you are determined to succeed. The meaning of this phrase is thought to have something to do with how unpredictable and destructive natural disasters like fires and floods can be. “Come hell or high water” means that someone will not let anything stop them from reaching their goal.

People who don’t finish their purchases and leave their carts or items at the front of the store instead of putting them back where they belong give store workers more work to do. It’s rude, messes up the store’s organization, and can cause things to get lost or broken.

A “buggy” is what people in the South call a shopping cart or trolley that you see in grocery shops and supermarkets. North Americans might call this thing a “shopping cart,” but people in the South have considered it a “buggy.” This odd little bit of language adds some regional flavor to shopping and shows how Southerners use words that make sense in their own culture to describe common things.

All of you might have heard of love. Many people, including friends, partners, siblings, parents, and many more, can love you at a time. Leaving all other loves aside if we talk about unconditional love. Only a few are privileged to enjoy love. It grows with time. No one can give a few dollars to anyone to love them genuinely, even for a few moments.

7. Good Gravy

“Good gravy” is a phrase that is often used in a funny way to show shock or amazement. That makes the reply funny, which makes it a unique way to show surprise. The fun undertone of this phrase makes it stand out from other exclamations like it. It adds a sense of humor while perfectly capturing the shock of something unexpected.

Some popular meals in the 1960s were taken, especially at dinners. These meals are less famous than they were in 6os. Here are the names of such dishes shared by people on an online platform.

8. Fancified

Something has been “fancified” if decorated, made fancier, or more complicated than usual. This phrase can be used in many different situations, from talking about outfits with lots of small details to talking about poorly made meals like casseroles. When you take something from simple to fancy, that’s what it means.

Make sure that your guests leave feeling like they’ve been loved and respected as the wedding draws to a close. Instead of letting them leave in peace, you should wish them well and thank them for being a part of your life. A straightforward farewell or a modest sign of appreciation, such as sweets or handwritten messages of gratitude, might make a favorable, lasting impression.

9. Carrying On

“Carrying on” means putting on a show of feelings or actions. This can include a lot of different feelings, from good to bad. The phrase says it all about heightened emotions, no matter what kind they are. It means that someone is acting in an over-the-top or delightful way, which gets people’s attention and usually makes them react.

As the majority of men often feel lonely and emotionally isolated. Because he prefers to face all hardship alone without letting others know, unlike women, they don’t share deep feelings with friends. So, they need a loyal person who cares about their feelings. Try to make them feel relaxed by doing little actions of affection.

10. Knock on Wood

“Knock on wood” is a superstitious spell to avoid bad luck. It is usually said after being upbeat or noticing a good turn of events. It’s something people say to avoid tempting fate. People believe that bad luck will stay away if they knock on a hard surface after saying something nice. It’s a way to say that good news should be balanced with care to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Not a thing to do, but take a trip down memory lane! That ’70s Show managed to cultivate some of the most iconic moments in pop culture history. It’s also responsible for catapulting its younger stars Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama and Danny Masterson into the spotlight. Created by Mark Brazill, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, That ’70s Show centered on a group of teens growing up in the suburbs of Wisconsin in the 1970s. It ran for seven seasons on Fox from 1998 to 2006. Debra Jo Rupp, Kurtwood Smith, Don Stark, Tanya Roberts, Lisa Robin Kelly and Tommy Chong also appeared on the series. “[We] had no idea what was ahead of us, or if it would even last … but we knew it was gonna be fun,” Valderrama reflected via Instagram in August 2018, while celebrating the show’s 20-year anniversary. “We spent 8 years and 200 episodes together, we traveled the world … [and] we grew up together. We were a family, and will always be.” Grace, the series lead, and Kutcher both left the series after seven seasons. Though Josh Meyers stepped in during their absence, both actors returned for the series finale in 2006. The success of That ’70s Show also led to the release of That ’80s Show in 2002. The spinoff series featured Glenn Howerton of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame in the early days of his career. The sitcom was short-lived as it was canceled that year after one season. For more hot celebrity news, listen to Us Weekly editors dish on top topics & trends with these clips from the Hot Hollywood Podcast! Despite That ’70s Show’s continued popularity today through cable reruns and Netflix streaming, fans shouldn’t expect to see the series revived in the same fashion as Roseanne and Full House. Grace previously hinted that the likelihood of the entire cast returning for a revival is slim. “That cast has gone on to such amazing things. Each person individually has had such great success,” he explained to Newsweek in September 2018. “I would absolutely love to do it to spend time with those guys, but I don’t want to think about it too much. It’d be too fun of an idea, and I doubt it would happen.” Scroll down to see what the cast has been up to since the series wrapped!

Welcome to another edition of NHL Rumours! The Stanley Cup Final is officially done, as the Florida Panthers captured the holy grail. That now leads us to the offseason and the fun festivities to come. The NHL Draft is Friday and the free agency frenzy is this upcoming Monday. Let the fireworks begin. With the latest rumblings, things are moving quick with the new league year approaching. Today’s rumors focus on the Detroit Red Wings.

NHL Rumours

Rumour: Pierre Lebrun discusses the Red Wings in talks with Shayne Gostisbehere on a contract extension

Things are beginning to speed up, as the offseason is officially underway. For Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings, they have had quite the start. Yzerman made a minor move with the Nashville Predators, acquiring a second round pick. Also, the team parted ways with defenceman Jake Walman . It’s been busy for the Red Wings and right as free agency approaches.

The Red Wings enter free agency with $32 million in salary cap space. Although, key contracts are coming for Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider . It remains to be seen whether Patrick Kane makes a return to the Motor City, but there is a player that the club is in talks with.

The Journey So Far

The latest NHL Rumours swirl around the defence for the Red Wings. For Gostisbehere, it has been quite the journey. He was a point producing sensation with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2017-18 season, as he went on to put up 65 points. Since then it has been a mixed bag of results.

Gostisbehere is a tremendous puck over and excels in transition. The biggest impact he has is pushing the play forward and getting the puck to the playmaking forwards. He had a few down seasons, but went on to display a 51 point year with the Arizona Coyotes during the 2021-22 season. He ended up being a great anchor for the Coyotes blue line and was everything as advertised for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The last three years, Gostisbehere had eclipsed the 40 point mark. He has been the perfect offensive defenceman and a great building piece on the power play. It is exactly what made him a perfect fit for the Red Wings.

He Fits in Detroit

Given the latest Rumours in the NHL, this fits the Red Wings like a glove. Gostisbehere fits like a glove in this Red Wings lineup. His ability to produce offence and impact the game offensively is essential. During the 2023-24 season, the Red Wings finished ninth in goals for and were great at finishing their chances. As for Gostisbehere, he was part of that.

Gostisbehere finished the season fourth in points in the Red Wings (56) and led all defenceman in that regard. Also, he was a huge part of the team’s ninth best power play. He went on to score two goals but had 27 assists, which was a career high on the man advantage.

He would give the Red Wings a boost on the back end. Also, he would be a player that can play in many situations and be a complimentary piece for Seider. It was a great gamble signing him for one year and now he could see himself land a long term extension.
