Why See Derren Brown - Showman?

Comedy & Stand-up Magic Shows

Brand new show

The master illusionist is back and ready to stun, thrill and bemuse with his new production Showman. Whilst the details of this exciting new venture remain a closely guarded secret, Brown has revealed that the show will "will ultimately be about you, the audience member, because that's what I find most interesting. There are places I'd like to take the audience where we haven't been before." Knowing what the man has cooked up before, it's likely that Showman will be his most mind-bending live tour yet!

Approaching National Treasure status

Derren Brown first came to public attention in 2000 when he presented a series of television specials called Mind Control. Never once claiming to be a magician or to have powers, he has redefined magic for a whole new audience and is the ultimate self-confessed trickster. He has played Russian Roulette on live television in Jersey, convinced normal people to commit an armed robbery in the street, led the nation in a spooky live seance, predicted correct Lottery numbers, motivated a selfish man to survive a zombie apocalypse, and exposed so-called faith healers and spiritualists who con the public. Oh and he even appeared on the BBC drama Sherlock in a cameo!

derren brown tour 2023 edinburgh

Derren Brown adds Edinburgh dates

Showman tour to play six perfs at playhouse.

Illusionist and psychological manipulator Darren Brown has added six performances at the Edinburgh Playhouse to the eight month UK tour of his latest show, Showman , with tickets to his May 2022 shows now on sale .

Delayed because of the pandemic, the tour kicks off with ten postponed dates this Autumn. It restarts in March 2022 with dates at the Glasgow King’s (March 8 – 12, tickets here ), Edinburgh Playhouse (May 3 – 7, tickets here ) and His Majesty’s Aberdeen (May 10 – 14, tickets here ), before finishing up in Northampton in October.

Having found fame on the TV with his inventive manipulations and de-bunkings, Brown is at his best live on stage. Indeed, his live shows have won him two Oliviers – for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and he has received more Olivier nominations and wins than any other one-man show in theatre history.

Showman is Brown’s first brand new theatre show in six years. Announcing the new dates he said: “2022 will be the biggest tour I’ve done in 20 years. It’s exciting and daunting and I’m considering a bigger suitcase. Maybe even a four-wheeler. It’s madness and I can’t wait.”

Speaking of the show itself, before the pandemic, he said: “the heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life – our fears and difficulties – actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo.”

The resulting show will have mutated and developed over the last 18 months. Brown adds: “ All I can reveal at this point is that the show will ultimately be about you, the audience member, because that’s what I find most interesting.

more than you’d expect

“There are places I’d like to take you where we haven’t been before. I always aim to have it deliver more than you’d expect. I’m excited to be at the starting point of that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year.”

Brown’s latest book, A Book of Secrets , is published in September 2021. According to the blurb, in it “he considers the value of difficulty in our lives while reflecting on his own experiences of challenges and change. Perhaps it is in those times when we are forced to cope with adversity that we find the most meaningful rewards.

“As he navigates middle age, love and small talk, he dispenses with self-help platitudes and wonders if perhaps we need to more comfortably embrace uncertainty. Is anxiety in fact a pointer for growth?”

Speaking on the  UNBELIEVABLE cast , Derren Brown said:  “This cast has been hand selected for their range of talents and skills. Derren Brown's Unbelievable

Age recommendation and guidance: 8+

Unbelievable tickets are on sale now for the show in London’s West End in 2023.

From the mind of Derren Brown and described as “a magic show like no other”, Unbelievable will begin performances at Criterion Theatre on 19 September 2023 with tickets on sale now here .

Derren Brown, who will not appear on stage himself, said: “We have reimagined what a night of illusion could be. We have taken the love and experience we’ve put into my own stage work over twenty years and created, from the ground up, a proper, original, theatrical experience. I think we have liberated the magic show. It’s going to be a glorious thing.”

Fusing the best of theatre with jaw dropping illusions never before seen in the West End, Unbelievable features a New York Subway band and a company of multi-talented performers who will bring to life, live on stage, an evening of bewildering trickery, from the imagination of Derren Brown. The ambition for Unbelievable is to create an experience you can’t get anywhere else in the world. From the moment the audience set foot in the theatre, they will be an essential element – indeed the beating heart of the show.

Brown has creates, writes and directs the production with long-time collaborators Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor. It is produced by Kenny Wax Ltd and Vaudeville Productions.

Unbelievable will play at London’s Criterion Theatre from 19 September 2023 currently booking through to 7 April 2024.
