A decade since their last tour Down Under, experimental San Francisco act Deerhoof returns to our shores this June. The quartet will be touring in support of their latest album, 2023s Miracle-Level . The album is the band’s nineteenth long player in their storied 30 year career, and the first sung entirely in Japanese.
The album is “Deerhoof’s mystical manifesto on creativity and trust, its answer to the artificial industries of deception, coercion, and boredom we’re forced to put up with,” reads a statement.
Deerhoof will play five shows in Australia, starting with a performance at the Brunswick Ballroom in Melbourne on Wednesday June 12. This will be followed by a gig at Machine Hall in Sydney on Thursday June 13 as part of Vivid LIVE. The remaining three shows are at The Zoo in Brisbane on Friday June 14, Jive in Adelaide on Saturday June 15 and The Milk Bar in Perth on Sunday June 6.
Tickets for the tour are on sale now.
Emerging from San Francisco’s music scene in the early 90s, Deerhoof has gone on to establish themselves as one of the pioneers of early indie rock. Originally a duo consisting of guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer Greg Saunier, the band went through several personal changes over the years before drafting in bassist and vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki and guitarist John Dieterich, who replaced Fisk.
The band adhere to the DIY ethos of the 70s punk era, with the quartet’s Miracle-Level the first album they’ve recorded and mixed in a professional studio.
Revered by their peers and a huge influence on a wide range of indie and experimental bands and artists, Deerhoof is also known for their sometimes chaotic live shows.
Tickets for their headline show at Jive on Saturday June 15 are on sale now via Moshtix .

Deerhoof announce 2011 tour dates, album leak
To support their January 25th release of Deerhoof vs. Evil , art-rockers Deerhoof will tour the States starting next year. Beginning on January 27th in Sacramento, the group will hoof (sorry, had to do it) through 26 dates that will see them heading to their home town of San Francisco, out to Brooklyn, and winding up in Portland, OR. Nervous Cop and Ben Butler and Mousepad will provide support for most of the dates. Tickets for the majority of the shows are on sale now.
Following those dates, Deerhoof will take part in Carnegie Halls JapanNYC Festival by playing a gig at the multimedia art cabaret Le Poisson Rouge on March 14th. The festival celebrates the culture of classical and modern Japanese art, so Deerhoof fits right in with their Japanese frontwoman, Satomi Matsuzaki. Tickets for that show are available here . Those of you on the other side of the pond might try to catch the band at Decembers ATPs Nightmare Before Christmas . If you cant, though, they also have a special date next July opening for The Flaming Lips at Londons Alexandra Palace as part of ATP Concert’s Don’t Look Back Series. Deerhoof is set to play their sixth album, Milk Man , in its entirety, while the FLips will do The Soft Bulletin and Dinosaur Jr. will play their 1988 album Bug. Grab tickets for the July 1st show here .
Can’t wait till 2011 for all the Deerhoof splendor? Well lucky you, because ahead of all of this the band has promised to “leak” the entire new album song by song via various outlets. So far, two songs have been posted: first single The Merry Barracks and Super Duper Rescue Heads! , which you can also stream below. Polyvinyl will release the CD version and a 180-gram vinyl limited to 2,000 copies in the U.S., while Joyful Noise is putting out 500 hand-numbered green cassette tapes (maybe Sony was premature ahead of some nostalgia…) While you patiently (or impatiently) wait for the next song to hit on November 9th, check out the tour dates below.
