LIVE: Deacon Blue – Utilita Arena, Birmingham, 20/09/2023

35 years on from their first UK Top 40 hit and almost 30 years past their most recent, Deacon Blue have hung onto a huge proportion of their fan base, to such an extent that their greatest hits tour, in place to promote their new All The Old 45s collection, is an arena tour taking in the likes of tonight’s venue, Birmingham’s Utilita Arena (formerly the NIA).

The programme for tonight is to be two Deacon Blue sets; an acoustic ‘support’ section followed by a full electric set. The six-piece band takes to the stage to a backdrop of moving trains and urban imagery and gathers closely to deliver a short a capella section of their ‘Wages Day’ hit before a slightly countrified ‘Queen Of The New Year’ complete with double bass and brushed drums takes the show up a notch. The first set includes a trio of songs from their beloved Raintown debut, including the lovely ‘ Chocolate Girl ‘ single before which singer Ricky Ross jokes “Thank you very much, the main act will be along in a minute” . The band still includes the brilliant Jim Prime on keyboards, but Ross at times shows off his own considerable skills on piano too, as fellow singer Lorraine McIntosh similarly adds acoustic guitar to her contribution. Ross and McIntosh have fronted the band together now for almost four decades and they come across as genuinely appreciative of their position and audience, at times mentioning individual fans by name.

View recent photos 2

The acoustic set perhaps allows a couple of lesser known songs to be performed, such as the title track of their slightly under the radar 2001 album ‘Homesick’ which closes out that section of the show.

After the break, Ross bounds back onto the stage and requests that the audience stand for the electric set, which begins with the upbeat ‘The Hipsters’ (from the 2012 album of the same name), during which he then gives the audience an audacious objective to make tonight “the best night of their lives!” . ‘Wages Day’ returns in its full version and the band’s own song “Twist and Shout’ is made into a medley with an Isley Brothers song (if I tell you it was also covered by The Beatles , you might work it out!). The band’s second single, and perhaps their best, ‘Loaded’ , (and no, it’s not presented in a medley with anything by Primal Scream ), is previewed via a Ross monologue that explains the meaning of the song, (essentially a socialist anthem about those with and those without), and a touching tribute to original guitarist Graham Kelling who very sadly passed away in 2004, aged just 47.

The big hits are mainly here, the melancholy of old favourite ‘When Will You Make My Telephone Ring?’ , the ebullient ‘Real Gone Kid’ , as well as fan favourite album cuts such as the beautifully downbeat Raintown title track and the far more upbeat ‘City Of Love’ , from their 2020 record of the same name. ‘Love and Regret’ is maybe the least known of the five big hits played tonight from the band’s commercial high water mark album When The World Knows Your Name , but seems to be a real fan favourite on this evidence.

The voices of McIntosh and Ross are entirely undimmed by the passage of time, or indeed the two-hour-plus set tonight. There’s a four song encore, with a couple of the band’s most well-known songs, a roof-raising run through ‘Dignity ’ of course, and ‘Fergus Sings The Blues’ sandwiched between a couple of slower songs: the affecting ballad ‘Peace Will Come’ and the eventual closer, a cover of Warren Zevon ’s equally poignant ‘Keep Me In Your Heart’ , with Ross joking that “This is the moment when the party’s really finished, but there’s one old Scottish guy sitting in the kitchen boring the hell out of you!” The band take turns singing lines from the song and it’s a beautifully hopeful way to send the very appreciative Birmingham crowd home.

Ricky Ross and Deacon Blue … rasp and bruised romance.

Deacon Blue review – evergreen hits with a grip on the present

Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff The band’s poise is undiminished, and past favourites are savoured, but a slew of engaging new tunes show the pop-rockers are still plugged in

W andering from his mic stand as the music fades to a murmur, Ricky Ross marvels at Chocolate Girl ’s 34-year history as a mixtape constant and soundtrack to marriages, births and divorces. It’s a neat bit of accounting, but its backward glance doesn’t take into account Deacon Blue’s intriguing place in the present.

It has been some time since the band sat this close to the indie zeitgeist, yet thanks to the rise of outfits such as the War on Drugs and Wild Pink, who prize the exact blend of pristine pop-rock and conversational songwriting that Deacon Blue excel at, their music is ripe for reappraisal.

If they intend to engage with that process, even hurry it along, they don’t show it. They are an immaculate live band, urged on by a watertight rhythm section, lived-in interplay between guitarist Gregor Philp and pianist James Prime, and the boundless charisma of Lorraine McIntosh, whose voice remains a wonder. But they are not a particularly daring one.

The people who walk the streets of Ross’s songs have dirt under their fingernails, so it’s a shame that an overreliance on cut-and-paste arena stagecraft – video packages that look like screensavers, momentum-sapping acoustic interludes – leaves certain cuts adrift in the gloss, and a charge through Twist and Shout does little with its jangle-pop quirks.

The other side of this coin is that the hits are dispensed with undiminished enthusiasm. Real Gone Kid is evergreen, a song so vibrant that no number of ad campaigns can kill it, while Fergus Sings the Blues and Dignity are greeted wildly by an amped-up crowd. There is a neat through line to newer tracks – the stately A Walk in the Woods and barrel-chested Hit Me Where it Hurts – that display the same melodic solidity and ringing harmonies.

Ross, his voice a perfect blend of Paul Westerberg rasp and bruised romance, lands a blow on Boris Johnson in the preamble to Loaded, a polemic about haves and have nots from Deacon Blue’s 1987 debut Raintown that is precision-tooled for the moment. Their music isn’t far behind in that regard.

All the old 45s: deacon blue.

All The Old 45s: Deacon Blue

All The Old 45s: Deacon Blue announces unplugged and amplified Greatest Hits UK & Ireland 2023 tour.

Thirty-five years since their debut single, Dignity, and millions of record sales since, Deacon Blue are digging out all their old 45s - the Top 10s, the favourites, the sing-a-long rarities - and touring the UK & Ireland in September / October 2023. The band have always thrived onstage, but they’ve never played gigs quite like this: they’ll perform two sets, with no support. The first half will be an intimate acoustic show, and then they’ll go electric for a raucous trip across their hits.

Vocalist and songwriter Ricky Ross is raring to go on this celebration of Deacon Blue’s brilliant and loyal fans, roaring the Caledonian gospel from the South Coast to the Uplands. “We’ve decided to play a Greatest Hits show with a difference,” he says. “Yes, we intend to play all (or nearly all) the old 45s, but we also want the first half of the evening to be an intimate acoustic performance, the band gathered round the piano with acoustic guitars and whatever Dougie decides to hit. We’ll play some album tracks and reinterpret a few favourites from the back catalogue. We’ll take a short break then come back and make a lot of noise. We hope you can be part of that noise.”

Kicking off in the birthplace of pop (as Ross’s recent memoir attests, everything comes back to The Beatles), the tour will launch in Liverpool - which has long held a special place in the band’s collective heart - before travelling the length of the land. Ross, co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond (drums), Jim Prime (keyboards), Gregor Philp (guitar) and Lewis Gordon (bass) will breathe new life into well-loved songs like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day, Real Gone Kid, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Your Swaying Arms, Twist & Shout, Your Town, The Hipsters and City Of Love. And so many more.

The dates will culminate in a homecoming show at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, a stone’s throw away from the Finnieston Crane, which defined their debut album, Raintown. It’s a suitably celebratory space for the final fling on a special tour of Deacon Blue’s greatest hits - and the rest - as they reel in the years and the ships and the songs, in the hurricane days and summers and suns, amplified and unplugged, surrounded by friends in cities of love.
