Bionic Bar

DISCOVER COCKTAILS WITH CHARACTER

Whatever kind of sip you’re craving — be it a tiki-inspired drink in a Polynesian-themed lounge, piña coladas served poolside to the sounds of a live Calypso band, or cocktails coded by you and crafted by robots — you’re in for an experience that raises the bar.

Bamboo Room, Bar, Cocktail

THE BAMBOO ROOM

Throwback vibes and crazy good cocktails will whisk you away at The Bamboo Room℠ — a kitschy-cool Polynesian-inspired bar that packs a punch. Expert mixologists at this tiki hideaway keep your tastes in mind as they sling spirited sips with exotic fruits and spices.

Bionic Bar, Cocktail

At Bionic Bar®, you’ll meet two robotic bartenders who know how to shake up your night. Choose a cocktail from the menu, or punch your own recipe into an iPad ordering station. Then watch as these mecha mixologists mix, muddle and stir up your signature sip.

The Lime and Coconut, Couples, Cocktails

THE LIME & COCONUT

The Lime and Coconut℠ turns the vacay vibes way, way up with DJs, live music and two pool bars serving all your favorite poolside cocktails — including the signature Lime & Coconut. And when the sun goes down, this pool bar just might be the hottest spot onboard.

Two 70 Lounge

Grab a hand-crafted cocktail at Two70 Bar and start gazing. In the evening, live entertainment pairs with pulsing music and amazing visuals across a floor-to-ceiling wall of windows to dazzle guests late into the night.

North Star

NORTH STAR BAR

The tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship, North Star® is a great spot to enjoy views during the day — but it’s even more magnificent at night. Score dazzling views of the night sky, then raise at glass at the North Star® Bar.

Complete guide to cruise ship drink packages

Roundup of alcoholic beverage packages that let you pay one flat fee.

CruiseClout score: 20.0

Have you gotten to the end of your cruise and dreaded getting that final bar bill? Well, you can avoid sticker shock on your next sailing by considering a beverage package. Many mainstream cruise lines now offer alcoholic beverage packages that allow travelers to pay one flat fee for access to most drinks on board.

To help you sift through some of the confusion around the various programs and options, we've put together this updated  Complete guide to cruise ship drink packages available to cruisers age 21 and up. Note that drinks are included on all-inclusive luxury cruise lines .

Cruise ship drink package basics

While each cruise line’s alcoholic beverage package is slightly different, they almost all have certain inclusions and restrictions that you should know before buying one of the packages.

  • Most drink packages are priced per person, with a flat fee per day.
  • You need to purchase the drink package for the entire cruise, not just select days.
  • An additional service charge (of either 15% or 18%) is added to the total purchase price of a drink package at checkout.
  • Once the cruise has begun, beverage packages are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Many cruise lines require all individuals in a stateroom to purchase a beverage package.
  • Beverage packages are usually not offered on chartered sailings or on cruises of two nights or fewer.
  • Most packages cover beverages purchased in onboard restaurants (including specialty restaurants), lounges, bars, at poolside and at outside venues, and they usually work on the cruise lines’ private islands.
  • Cruise drink packages often cover drinks up to a certain dollar amount, with cruisers needing to pay the difference for any drinks that are above this maximum allotment. Sorry, no $1,200 bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild!
  • Indeed, most drink packages do not cover bottles of wine or bottles of liquor, nor are mini-bar items, souvenir cup/specialty promotions or room service purchases usually covered.
  • Cruisers are entitled to one drink at a time, whether it is alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and the drink package does not cover onboard specials like “buckets of beer” (thank goodness).
  • Drink packages are for your own personal consumption, meaning no sharing of drinks with other cruisers who don't have a package.
  • Most cruise line packages are “unlimited” for the duration of the cruise. Do the math and decide if you'll save money by springing for a drink package.
  • Make sure you consume responsibly as cruise lines reserve the right to deny service to individuals who are intoxicated.

Here's our rundown of cruise line beverage package options:

Relax with a margarita — a Grand Sabor or Jalapeño Cucumber — at Sabor on Harmony of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean International

  • The Deluxe Beverage Package – Starting at $63-$89 a day dependng on the sailing —plus 18% service charge — the Deluxe Beverage package covers all beers, wines by the glass, cocktails priced up to $12 ($13 on Oasis-class ships), plus premium coffee drinks. The package also includes 500-milliliter bottled still water, specialty coffees at onboard coffee shops (Starbucks on Oasis-class ships is not included), as well as soda and juices. Some cruise lines require all individuals in a stateroom to purchase the plan, but Royal Caribbean does not. And if you are booked on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you can often score a 20% (or greater) discount on the package by purchasing early in your Cruise Planner. Plus, receive a 40% discount on bottled wines priced up to $100, and 20% discount on wine prices above $100.

The BlueIguana Tequila Bar on Carnival Vista is the perfect spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza.

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • The Cheers Program – One of the best mainstream cruise line packages, the $51.95 per day (plus 15% service charge) Cheers program on Carnival cruise ships covers quite a lot. All cocktails, beers and wines by the glass up to $20 are covered on the package. The line reasonably limits the number of alcoholic beverages consumed by an individual to 15 drinks during a 24-hour period. A variety of additional non-alcoholic beverages are unlimited, including soft drinks, zero-proof cocktails, energy drinks, 500ml bottled water, premium bottled water at dinner and specialty coffees and teas. Plus, if you book before the cruise begins, you get a 10% discount. You also get a 25% discount off the menu price for any spirit or wine by the glass above $20. All individuals over 21 in a cabin must purchase the plan for the entire duration of the cruise.

Sip at Sugarcane Mojito Bar, one of 21 bars and lounges on board Norwegian Escape.

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • Premium Beverage Package – Starting at the hefty price of $99  per day (plus 20% service charge), Norwegian ’s Premium Beverage Package includes any wines, beers or cocktails priced at $15 or less per glass. The package also covers soda and juices at all bars but no other non-alcoholic beverages. While the package works on the cruise line’s private island of Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas , it does not include drinks at the line’s newest destination Harvest Caye in Belize . Beverage packages must be purchased for all guests staying within the same stateroom, additional stateroom or adjoining stateroom. Individuals under the age of 21 will be required to purchase the Soda Program.
  • The Corks and Caps Package – With a daily charge of $65  (plus 20% gratuity), the Corks and Caps Package covers beers and wines by the glass up to $15, along with soft drinks and juices at the bars and lounges on the ship. The program has similar restrictions as the Premium Beverage Package; the main difference is that this package does not include any liquor-based cocktails. As with the above, all guests in the party must purchase the package, and those under 21 must buy the Soda Program.

  • Princess Cruises
  • Premier Beverage Package – With a per day price of $59.99  (including service charge), the Premier Beverage Package on Princess Cruises covers all beverages, including soda, water, specialty coffees, as well as beers, wines and cocktails up to $12 a glass. Depending on the region/ship, Princess Cruises may not offer the package for certain sailings, and the prices and coverage are different for Australian cruises. Still, the package covers the vast majority of drinks offered at onboard bars and restaurants. Plus, the cruise line does not require all individuals in a cabin to purchase the package.

Holland America Line

  • Signature Beverage Package –  Holland America  offers a Signature Beverage Package. For a daily charge of $54.95 (plus 15% gratuity), the package covers beers, wines and cocktails priced up to $11. You may be pleasantly surprised at the number of drinks that are included in the package. The package also includes bottled water, soda and other mocktails. Holland America caps the total number of drinks to 15 a day, and this total includes both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Also, any drink not covered in the plan needs to be paid 100% out of pocket. If you step up to the Elite Package at $59.95 per day, you're able to order single drinks up to $15, compared to the Signature Package's $11 cap.

The Martini Bar aboard your Celebrity Cruises Solstice class ship is a great venue for socializing with colleagues or new friends.

Celebrity Cruise Line

  • Premium Package – At a per day cost of $69  (plus 20% gratuity), the Premium Package on Celebrity Cruises  includes all beer, wine and cocktails priced at $15 a glass or less. A wide range of premium options are covered in the package, including craft cocktails and specialty beers and wines. All cruisers in a cabin are not required to purchase a beverage package.
  • Classic Package – At a cost of $59  a day (plus 20% gratuity), this package includes a more limited selection than the Premium Package: beers, cocktails and wines up to $9 a glass. Many liquor brands will be included, but signature cocktails will be additional. Premium coffees and “non-premium” bottled water, along with juices and soft drinks, are also part of this package. For a complete comparison of brands covered on the Classic and Premium package,  head to Celebrity Cruises’ website .
  • Drinks & More Package – A relatively new offering, the $85 a day (plus 20% gratuity) Drinks & More Package includes all the benefits of the Classic and Premium Beverage Packages as well as two bottles of wine from a pre-selected wine list, $50 in casino "free play," a wine-tasting experience and mini-bar replenished daily.

Explore cruise offerings for cocktails, wine, beer, soda and more.

Cruise drink packages can provide incredible value for people who plan to regularly imbibe on their voyage and want the convenience of an unlimited open bar package – whereas they may not be a good deal for light drinkers. Other options include alcohol-free drink packages, which let cruisers indulge in soft drinks, hot chocolate, specialty coffees and a range of other nonalcoholic beverages.

Whether or not to get the drink package is a question all cruisers face, and there's no perfect answer for everyone. Read on to learn about the drink packages offered by the major cruise lines and what each beverage package includes.

Expert tip: The price of each beverage package will vary from sailing to sailing and may change at any time. Also note that cruise drink packages are almost always nontransferable and nonrefundable, and that everyone in your cabin needs to buy a package. If kids are cruising with adults who purchase an alcoholic drink package, a nonalcoholic package must be purchased for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drink packages can be worth it on a cruise if you consume enough beverages to justify the cost of a package. If a drink package you're considering costs $85 per day, for example, you can try to estimate whether you would drink enough alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees and sodas to add up to or exceed this cost.

If you're a light drinker, these packages may not be a good deal for you at all.

Because drink packages are frequently discounted before a cruise, it makes sense to buy one pre-departure if you can. Also note that some cruise lines only offer drink packages on the day of embarkation and stop offering them for the rest of the cruise.

Cruise drink packages can never be shared. With all the major cruise lines, each guest in your cabin must purchase a package.

Princess Cruises drink packages: Are the line’s inclusive options deals or duds?

PRINCESS CRUISES

There's nothing worse than being hit with an unexpectedly sizable bill on the last day of your sailing. It's important to budget for extras like drinks, Wi-Fi and crew gratuities — the drinks especially can really add up and surprise even the most seasoned cruisers.

That's why Princess Cruises offers a variety of drink packages. You can pay up front to avoid nasty surprises later. The options range from nonalcoholic and soda packages to inclusive plans that bundle together additional services for more comprehensive savings. But are you really saving money versus purchasing your soft drinks and cocktails a la carte?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Let's dive into the four options, corresponding costs and what's included so you can determine if a Princess Cruises drink package or all-inclusive bundle is worth booking.

What are the various Princess Cruises drink packages?

cruises with all you can drink

Princess Cruises offers four drink packages , including a couple of nonalcoholic drink plans. Each is designed to help you save money and not worry about the price of individual drink orders throughout your cruise.

However, it's important to note that Princess does things a bit unconventionally for the industry: There is no option to buy a stand-alone alcoholic drink package. If you want an inclusive alcohol package, you'll have to pay for the all-inclusive package that includes drinks alongside Wi-Fi, prepaid gratuities and access to such additional perks as specialty dining, fitness classes and free room service delivery.

Each package is available for purchase on board during the first two days of the sailing or pre-cruise through the Cruise Personalizer booking platform. (Packages are not available for pre-purchase within three days of sailing — if you've waited that long to decide, you'll need to make the purchase on board.)

Packages must be purchased for every day a passenger is sailing (you can't pick and choose days), they may not be shared and they are nontransferable and nonrefundable.

Zero-Alcohol Package

Love indulging in specialty coffees and teas, fizzy sodas, fresh juices and smoothies, cozy hot chocolate, zero-proof mocktails, bottled water and Red Bull energy drinks? Then the Zero-Alcohol Package (previously known as the Coffee & Soda Package) is primed to please your palate. This package is also a great way to get your fill of sparkling and still water bottles, which can be handy for pouring into your reusable bottle and taking ashore on excursions.

There is no age restriction for this package, and it may be used on Princess' private islands and at all onboard dining venues, bars and public spaces with beverage service.

Classic Soda Package

For those with a serious fountain or canned soda habit who don't dabble in fancy coffees or crave bottled water, the Classic Soda Package delivers much-needed refreshment. Beyond the unlimited sodas, this package includes canned fruit juices (excluding the fresh juice bar), mocktails and smoothies.

As with the Zero Alcohol Package, this package has no age restrictions, and it may be used on Princess' private islands or anywhere on board that offers beverage service.

Princess Plus Package

cruises with all you can drink

Princess' entry-level bundled drink package offers guests a savings of 54% (based on a seven-night cruise) on several of the cruise line's extra-fee offerings.

First, let's look at the drinks included with Princess Plus: all the nonalcoholic beverages included in the Zero-Alcohol Package, plus cocktails, spirits, wine and beer up to $15 each. (Items selected beyond this price will be charged only the difference in price.) Interested in purchasing a bottle of wine? You'll get 25% off as part of your package perks, and this discount also applies to one-liter bottles of water.

Age restrictions do apply to this package, and exclusions to this package include minibar items, souvenir glassware and bottles of spirits or wine.

Now, let's examine what else comes with the Princess Plus Package because the beverages are just the beginning:

  • Wi-Fi: You get internet access , including streaming and video chat, on a single device.
  • Crew gratuities: The Plus Package includes pre-paid gratuities (which the line calls "crew appreciation"), saving you $16 to $18 per day (depending on cabin type).
  • Premium desserts: Indulge your sweet tooth twice a day with complimentary desserts from the Gelateria, Swirls or Coffee & Cones.
  • Unlimited juice bar: Choose from four juice blends and two power shots (ginger and turmeric), including antioxidants (fruit only), cleansing (vegetables only), immunity (fruit and vegetable) and energy boost. Each juice is a 6-ounce serving.
  • Fitness classes: Work off those premium desserts with two complimentary fitness classes from Xponential during your sailing. Options include Pure Barre, Yoga Six and Stretch Lab.
  • Casual dining meals: Dine out twice at no extra charge at casual sit-down restaurants, such as Alfredo's (pizza), Kai Sushi and pop-ups like Planks and Steamers.
  • OceanNow delivery and room service delivery: Craving a cocktail at the pool? A snack while you read in the library? Just order and it'll be delivered to you, no matter where you are on the ship — including your room. (You'll still pay the cost of the food, drink or OceanNow device; the line will waive the delivery fee.)

Princess Premier Package

Impressed with what you see in the Princess Plus Package but want even more? The Princess Premier Package offers guests savings of 66% off because of the extra value in bundling together even more perks.

When it comes to beverages, you'll get all the same access as the Plus Package, but with this selection, drinks up to $20 are covered (instead of being capped at $15). The package also covers a one-liter bottle of still or sparkling water each time you dine at a specialty restaurant.

As with the Plus Package, guests who choose the Premier Package will receive 25% off bottles of wine and one-liter bottles of water. Age restrictions apply to this package, and exclusions to this package include minibar items, souvenir glassware and bottles of spirits or wine.

Similarly to the Plus Package, the Premier Package also includes:

  • Prepaid crew gratuities
  • Unlimited juice bar
  • OceanNow delivery and room service delivery

You'll also get access to even more services and experiences (some upgraded, removing limitations), including:

  • Wi-Fi: You'll have access on four devices, instead of just one.
  • Premium desserts: You can order unlimited complimentary desserts (versus two per day).
  • Fitness classes: You can sign up for unlimited fitness classes fee-free (versus two per sailing). Casual dining meals: You can enjoy unlimited casual dining meals for free (versus two per sailing).
  • Specialty dining meals: This package includes two meals during your cruise, at Crown Grill, Sabatini's or one of the line's other specialty restaurants .
  • Photo package: You'll get unlimited digital images downloaded to your device plus three prints as a keepsake souvenir.
  • Princess Prizes: With the Premier Package, you're automatically enrolled in Princess Prizes. This is your chance to win cruise prizes (a seven-night cruise for two in a balcony stateroom is awarded on every cruise to one lucky player), shopping gift certificates, exclusive onboard experiences and more.
  • Medallion accessory: The Princess Medallion is a quarter-sized wearable device that speeds up embarkation, unlocks your stateroom door and enables onboard payments. This package includes a free accessory, such as a clip, so that you always have it handy.
  • Reserved theater seating: No more rushing to the production shows after dinner because you'll have reserved seating. Seats are held in special sections and are marked with special seat covers.

What do Princess Cruises drink packages cost?

cruises with all you can drink

Each of Princess' four drink packages has a price that scales with its value. Here's what you can expect to pay per guest, per day:

  • Classic Soda Package: $14.99
  • Zero-Alcohol Package: $29.99
  • Princess Plus Package: $60
  • Princess Premier Package: $80

The prices listed above do not include an automatic 18% service charge per day for the Classic Soda and Zero-Alcohol packages, so factor that into your travel budget if you decide to purchase a package.

When calculating cost, it's important to note that the first and second guests in a cabin must each book the same Plus or Premier Package; however, the third and fourth guests are not obligated to do so, which saves money for a family traveling with children.

With the Premier plan, Wi-Fi, specialty dining and the photo package are shareable, which allows a family of four with two parents to have their children's devices on Wi-Fi, take home family photo keepsakes and enjoy one specialty dining experience with their entire family.

One final point worth mentioning: The Plus and Premier plans aren't unlimited when it comes to alcohol. There's a limit of 15 alcoholic beverages over a 24-hour period, which runs from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m.

When's the best time to buy Princess drink packages?

There's no time like the present to purchase your drink package, so if you're positive you'll want it, feel free to select that option when booking your cruise — or any time prior to three days before your sailing.

Once on board, time is of the essence when it comes to purchasing a Princess drink package, as these bundled offers are only available for purchase on the first two days of your cruise (the day you embark and the next day of the voyage only). After that cutoff, it will be too late to take advantage of these packages.

Another reason to plan ahead? Both the Plus and Premier packages are capacity controlled and, if sold out, might not be available for all cabin categories at the time of booking.

You can either sign up during your first two days on board (you will see various crew members promoting the packages or you can upgrade directly through the cruise line's app) or you can add these packages onto your booking ahead of the cruise by logging into your Cruise Personalizer. If you prebook a package, it is nonrefundable within three days of sailing.

What drinks are you allowed to bring on board?

cruises with all you can drink

If you don't want to purchase a plan, you might think you can BYOB in order to save money on drinks when you cruise. You have a few options, but they are limited.

For instance, if you were planning to bring your own soda, sparkling water or juices on board, you can do so on embarkation day if carried in your hand luggage (not checked). You are limited to a maximum of 12 sealed cans (not bottles) of 12 ounces each or less per person. Guests will be asked to discard open beverages in plastic containers prior to boarding (so don't show up with a Big Gulp in hand).

If you wish to bring alcohol on board, Princess allows one bottle of wine or champagne (750mL in volume or less) per guest of legal drinking age, which must be presented to security during embarkation. A $20 corkage fee applies if guests wish to consume said bottle in the ship's public areas. (It's free to enjoy in your cabin).

Also, a $20 corkage fee also applies to each additional bottle beyond the one-bottle-per-guest-per-voyage allowance. How many bottles you can bring in total is unknown; the fine print simply says, "Limitations apply, and wine brought in quantities deemed to be excessive by the vessel or security will be refused."

Finally, passengers agree to surrender alcoholic beverages that are purchased duty-free from the vessel's gift shop or at ports of call. They'll be delivered to your cabin prior to disembarking the voyage. (Be sure to account for those in your checked luggage on the way home.)

Are Princess drink packages worth the money?

cruises with all you can drink

You'll need to do a bit of math to figure out if the drink packages are worth the price.

If you're considering the Classic Soda or Zero Alcohol packages, start by calculating how many sodas, specialty coffees, juices, smoothies and mocktails you think you'll drink on a daily basis. Then do the math: sodas typically cost $2.50 each, specialty coffees and teas $3-$4, juices $8 and smoothies $10. If it's just two or three drinks each day, these plans likely won't be worth it.

But if you drink at least six sodas each day, or several sodas and a mocktail or smoothie, the Classic Soda Package starts to make sense. Or, if you plan to start your day with a vanilla latte or energy drink, enjoy a few sodas with your meals and by the pool, hit the juice bar after the gym, and partake in a pre-dinner mocktail, then purchasing the Zero Alcohol Package could be the way to go. Just remember that you'll need to keep up the same drinking pace on port days as you do on sea days to break even.

For the Plus and Premier packages, there's a lot more to calculate, but the value of each is a no-brainer before you even get down to the nitty gritty numbers of each individual perk.

With the Plus Package, if you assume that most cocktails are $10-$15 each, beers are about $7 apiece and glasses of wine are $10-$20 each, it's easy to spend $30 or more a day if you plan to have one beer by the pool, a glass of wine at dinner and a post-dinner nightcap. Once you add in the prepaid crew appreciation (a minimum of $16 per day), and Wi-Fi for one device (14.99 per day), you're already paying $61 per day a la carte — yet the cost of this package is only $60 per day.

Related: 8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

Without adding in the value of premium desserts, fitness classes, the unlimited juice bar, two casual dining meals ($14.99 each) and room service and OceanNow delivery, you've already come out ahead.

The value continues with the Premier Package. Let's assume the same $30 per day on alcohol and $16 on crew appreciation, but now you have access to up to four devices on Wi-Fi ($40), bringing your total to $86 per day a la carte — yet this package only costs $80 per day. Add in the value of two specialty dining meals (starting at $35 per person), unlimited digital photos and three prints, unlimited premium desserts and fitness classes, unlimited juice bar and casual dining meals and Ocean Now and room service delivery, and you've found a great package deal.

It's important to note that both guests sharing a cabin must purchase the same bundled package (Plus or Premier). Be sure to double that price in your calculations if you're traveling as a couple, or discuss with your travel companion prior to the trip to ensure you're on the same page about purchasing a package.

Bottom line: Is a Princess Cruises drink package right for you?

cruises with all you can drink

Now that you have all the facts and figures, take a look at your everyday lifestyle when it comes to beverage consumption — do you already have a Starbucks addiction or a four-soda-a-day habit, enjoy a glass or two of wine with dinner and seek out juices and smoothies when you're feeling a bit low-energy? Your routines aren't likely to trend downwards on a cruise. In fact, you'll probably indulge a bit more since you're on vacation and have easy access to plenty of options.

Unless you believe you're going to be satisfied with the basic beverages included in the cruise fare — tap water, drip coffee, hot and iced tea, milk, lemonade and juice from a dispenser at breakfast — you will end up spending some amount of money on extra beverages. If you don't enjoy the feeling of being nickled and dimed every time you place an order, the Classic Soda and Zero Alcohol packages will lead to a stress-free vacation with no ugly surprises on the last day.

As for the Plus and Premier packages, you have no choice but to pay the crew appreciation (as you should!) and there's little chance you'll go without Wi-Fi on a cruise — so if you plan on having any beverages at all, especially ones containing alcohol, you'll see massive savings with these packages — Princess claims 54% and 66% respectively off the retail value on a seven-night voyage.

The choice is yours, so choose the option that will best enhance your vacation and save you stress and money. Remember that the more you save, the more future cruise vacations you can afford to book.

Everything to Know About Alcohol & Drinks on a Cruise (Costs, Rules, & More)

For many people, it’s not a cruise unless they are enjoying themselves with a drink in their hand. After all, what’s more relaxing than hanging out poolside with a cold beer or tasty cocktail?

Mojito on a cruise

Of course, cruise lines are happy to help. Bars are everywhere on a cruise ship, and the alcohol flows freely. But it’s certainly not free. Drinks are big business on a cruise.

So how much will you pay for a drink? What sort of beverages are available? Who can buy a beer or cocktail? These are just a few questions you might have about enjoying alcohol on a cruise. We answer them all (plus roughly a dozen more) for you below.

In This Article...

How much does beer cost on a cruise?

Looking for a brew? Cruise ships will have tons of options, including some like Carnival that even brew their own beer to sell. But if it’s a large, nationally known beer, it’s likely to be on the ship… along with some other options like local beers. Norwegian Cruise Line even has some ships with dozens of beers on tap.

In general, expect prices to be in the $7-9 range, before gratuity. With gratuity, expect to spend about $8-10.50 per beer.

As an example, below is a list of prices and beers from a recent Royal Caribbean cruise. Keep in mind these prices are before gratuity is added on.

  • Amstel Light $7.49
  • Blue Moon $7.49
  • Bud Light $7.49
  • Budweiser $7.49
  • Coors Light $7.49
  • Corona $7.49
  • Dos Equis $7.49
  • Daura Damm $7.49
  • Heineken $7.49
  • Michelob Ultra $7.49
  • Miller Light $7.49
  • Paulaner Weiss $7.49
  • Stella Artois $7.49
  • Red Stripe (473 ml) $7.99
  • Foster’s Oil Can (750 ml) $9.50

Other cruise lines might have prices that are slightly higher or lower but this is a good ballpark. As well, options will vary by cruise line and even from bar to bar on some ships.

How much do cocktails cost on the ship?

Hurricane fish bowl

Perhaps nothing is as iconic on a cruise ship as sipping a delicious cocktail with an umbrella in it. And cruise lines are happy to oblige. Not only can you get classics like Rum Runners, Margaritas, and Mai Tais, but cruise lines are constantly introducing unique cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else.

In other words, even if you aren’t a big cocktail drinker, there’s likely to be something that you’ll want to sip.

The downside? You definitely have to pay for it. Prices for cocktails on cruise ships usually run about $10-14 per drink, before gratuity . So expect to spend about $12 to $16.50 per beverage when gratuity is added.

Here is a sample menu from a recent Carnival cruise to give you an idea of what’s offered. Just like different restaurants, different bars on the ship will have different drink options:

cruises with all you can drink

What should I know about drink packages?

As you can see, the price of alcohol on the ship can be expensive. If you’re looking to save money, the cruise line offer drink packages. These packages offer up all you want for one price. So, for example, a cruise line like Carnival will charge about $55 per day for a package, and for that amount you can simply grab a drink when you’re ready.

Drink packages can be a considerable cost, but make the budgeting much easier.

Before you buy a package, however, there are lots of things to know. For example, if one adult in the cabin buys the package, then all adults normally have to purchase it as well. And if you purchase, you have to buy the package for every day of the cruise.

For a full breakdown, read our guide to cruise line drink packages here .

Is gratuity included on drinks?

Royal Caribbean Bionic Bar

If you have a drink package, then you don’t have to worry about gratuity being added when you get something from a bar. The gratuity is instead added onto the daily cost of the package. So a $70 per day drink package will have an 18-20% gratuity charge (the amount varies by cruise line) and actually costs you closer to $85 per day. But when you get a drink, you won’t see any additional charges, for the drink or gratuity.

However, if purchasing a drink without the package, then you will be charged an additional gratuity on the menu price . As just mentioned, this amount varies by cruise line but is normally 18-20%.

So a $10 drink on the menu will actually end up being about $12. An $8 beer would be closer to $10.

One thing to know is that while this gratuity is charged automatically, when you sign the receipt you’ll see a line for an additional tip. You aren’t required or expected to add more unless you want to do so.

What’s the drinking age on a cruise ship?

With cruise ships there are some unique situations that you don’t find with other vacations. For instance, while docked in a country, the ship is bound to the laws of that nation. But when outside their waters, they are not. And then, a ship might visit three or four different countries with different laws during the same cruise.

To keep things simple, ships sailing from the United States have a drinking age of 21 years old . Ships sailing from points in Europe, Asia, and Australia typically have a drinking age of 18 years old.

But local laws in places your ship will visit might have different drinking ages. In some cases, it may be legal for someone to drink in port, but not allowed on the cruise ship. For instance, Mexico and The Bahamas have an 18 year drinking age, but ships departing the United States have a 21 year age minimum.

For more on cruises and drinking ages, you can see our article here .

How do I buy drinks on the ship?

cruises with all you can drink

Put that wallet away. To buy drinks on the ship you don’t need cash or a credit card. In most cases you simply hand over your room keycard, which acts as a charge card for your onboard account. (Sometimes you simply give your room number and the staff charges your account that way.)

Once charged, you’ll be presented a receipt to sign for your drink.

Have a drink package? Don’t worry, the bar staff will know when your card is swiped that you have the package. You won’t be charged for the beverage.

Is there a limit to how much I can drink?

There are no set limits on how much you can drink. One exception is that Carnival does limit those with drink packages to 15 alcoholic beverages per day. (It’s not clear if that limit applies to those without the package.)

Still, for the most part you aren’t under any clearly defined limit. That said, don’t expect to continue to be served if you are showing signs of dangerous levels of intoxication. The cruise lines want you to relax, enjoy yourself, and have a good time, but not at the expense of your health or the well-being of other passengers.

What brands of alcohol are available?

There is seemingly an endless number of options when it comes to alcohol brands on a cruise ship. In fact, there are bound to be brands you’ve never tasted or even heard of before, in addition to well-known names.

So will your favorite brand of beer, wine, or liquor be served? That depends.

If your favorite is a popular brand with national presence, then you can expect it to be on the ship. If it’s a lesser-known or regional brand, then the chances are much lower.

For instance, if you’re from Texas then Shiner Bock is a well-known beer brand and served just about anywhere in the state… but not nationally. We have yet to see the brand on a cruise ship unless sailing from Texas.

Major brands of alcohol like Tito’s, Jack Daniel’s, Crown Royal, Maker’s Mark are all widely available. In addition, you will definitely find some lesser-known options as well, but not all.

What time do the bars open and close?

“Cruise time” is a little different from regular time. So if you’re wanting a drink in the morning, that’s no issue. Individual bar schedules will vary, but apart from very late night/early morning (e.g. 3-8 a.m.) you should be able to find somewhere serving, though it may only be one or two spots.

For instance, below is the bar schedule for MSC during a recent cruise:

cruises with all you can drink

Can I take my drink anywhere around the ship?

Yes. At first it can seem a little weird walking from a restaurant to the casino to the pool all while carrying a drink in your hand. For those of us used to laws surrounding public display of open containers, it feels unnatural. On a cruise ship, it’s completely ok and commonplace.

Drinks can be taken with you anywhere around the ship. So grab a drink and head to a show, dinner, the pool, casino, or just back to the cabin.

Can I order two drinks/doubles?

Sure, although some lines have rules if you have the drink package. If you don’t have the package, then it’s not a big deal to order multiple drinks at once. In fact, cruise lines often have beer buckets that you can purchase that have 4-6 beers.

Want a drink for you and a friend? Want a double? Just order it, it’s no issue at all.

If you have the drink package, however, then things get a little more complicated. Since these packages are for individuals and not meant to be shared, there are rules that limit the ability to order multiple drinks. For example, Carnival’s package doesn’t allow double shots and you can only purchase one drink at a time, with a five-minute waiting period between drinks.

Is There a Mini-Bar in the Cabin?

Often, but not always. Every cabin will have a small refrigerator, which often doubles as a mini-bar with a number of beers, liquors, sodas, and waters. (We have been on cruises where the refrigerator is empty.)

Want something to drink? Help yourself, but just know you’ll be charged. The menu prices are typically posted on the fridge or nearby. Even if you have a drink package, mini-bar items are excluded.

Can I bring alcohol onboard?

You can’t bring most alcohol onto the ship for drinking during your cruise. So if you wanted to bring a bottle of rum or a 12-pack of beer from home to enjoy while sailing, that’s not allowed. Cruise lines expect you to purchase their bar offerings. They do, however allow you to bring on a bottle of wine or champagne.

If you are in port and find a bottle of something that you want, then you can also buy it and bring it home with you. So if you visit Mexico and pick up a bottle of tequila, you can bring it back with you as you board the ship.

The difference? When you return to the ship the bottle will be taken from you and placed in storage. It will then be returned to you the last night of the cruise to take home. So don’t think you’re going to be able to enjoy it while sailing.

One other thing to note is that some lines — including Carnival and Royal Caribbean — do allow you to bring on some non-alcoholic beverages like sodas and waters. You can find more details here .

Can I buy duty-free alcohol on the ship to mix drinks?

Duty free bottles

Step on a cruise ship (or head out into port), and you’ll see lots of opportunity for duty-free shopping. Cigarettes and alcohol are the big sellers, and the prices are good for what’s offered.

You might have the idea to bring on mixers and then buy a bottle from the duty-free shop to enjoy on your cruise. Unfortunately, that’s not allowed.

When buying from a duty-free shop, your bottles will be packaged and then stored by the staff until the last day of your cruise. They will then be delivered to your cabin on the last night to take with you as you get off the ship.

What happens if I sneak alcohol onto a cruise?

Given the price of drinks on the ship, you wouldn’t be alone in wondering about sneaking drinks on with you in your luggage as you board.

It’s relatively common that people try this trick. In fact, when boarding you’ll likely find several people having bottles of liquid being closely examined by the security staff during boarding.

In other words, security is on the lookout for smuggled booze. If found, expect it to be removed and likely destroyed. If put it in your checked luggage, you might be called down to retrieve your bag.

The terms and conditions of sailing may give the cruise line the right to not allow you to board if found trying to sneak on alcohol, however, we’ve personally never heard of that happening.

Still, it could lead to some awkward conversations — and losing your alcohol — should you be caught trying to sneak it onto the ship.

How can I save money on drinks?

There’s no question that it can be expensive to drink on a cruise ship. But there are ways that you can drink for less money. Here are a few tips:

Drink in port instead: Ports of call offer a chance to save money on drinks. Many areas near where the ship docks will have cheap(er) drink specials designed to attract the business of cruise passengers. By heading off the ship you can save money versus drinking on the ship.

Look for sales: If you do plan to drink on the ship, be sure to keep an eye out for drink specials. They will often be mentioned in the daily planner that’s delivered to your room each night. Maybe it’s a happy hour at a certain bar or certain drinks that have a discount.

Do the math on drink packages: If you’re a big drinker, then drink packages can save you tons. These packages are also expensive, so if you don’t get your money’s worth, then you could end up spending more than you would otherwise. To help you do the math before buying, check out our drink package calculator here .

Travel agent reveals amount of alcohol you need to drink to make cruise drinks package worth it

Travel agent reveals amount of alcohol you need to drink to make cruise drinks package worth it

There's a very specific point where you start having 'free drinks', so to speak.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

A travel agent who specialises in cruise ship holidays has revealed all when it comes to drink packages and if they're really worth it.

Those heading on a cruise ship can make the experience truly immersive and all-inclusive by upgrading to premium drinks packages .

The prices can differ significantly depending on who you're sailing with and what you're booking. P&O Cruises will cost you between £44.95 and £54.95 per day for its alcohol packages. In comparison, Royal Caribbean's booze option is around $89 (£71) a day.

Then there's the alcohol-free packages, which for P&O are £24.95 a day or up to $38 (£30) a day with the likes of Royal Caribbean.

Sure, it's not for everyone and they add to a cruising experience that certainly isn't cheap . One former cruise-worker-come-traveller even explains why she would never pay for one again .

But they are chosen by so many travellers year in, year out, that some people might feel peer pressured into it from the off.

Well, listen to the experts is our advice. And over on TikTok , one travel agent has revealed all when it comes to making that big decision.

Elisa, who runs The Paradise Travel Group , has posted a handy explainer to all her viewers that's been viewed thousands of times already.

Lots of travellers question whether they should purchase the drinks package on a cruise. (Getty Stock Image)

"As a travel agent that specialises in cruises the number one question I get is 'should I purchase the drinks package?'" Elisa says .

"Let's talk about it. On average, the drink package typically pays off once you've had about six or seven drinks per day on your cruise. That's typically the point in which you're going to break even with your drink package.

"Now any drink above and beyond that is what you're benefiting from when you're purchasing the drink package. You're almost getting them for free.

"If you're the type of person that knows they're going to drink probably less than six to seven drinks per day, then that's the point in which you really want to ask yourself if the drink package is worth it for you.

Delicious. (Getty Stock Image)

"Because nine times out of ten, at that point it is just going to be less expensive to go a la carte for all your drinks. The one exception I say to this is if you are looking to go in to your cruise with an all inclusive mindset, you don't want to have to think about the drink prices, you don't want to have to worry, you want to know that it is prepaid and you can get whatever you want.

"In that case yes it's probably worth it to just splurge and get the drink package."

Elisa also shares a handy hack when it comes to getting the best price for your package, with the cost of them fluctuating significantly prior to sailing as cruise lines put on sales.

A cruise ship in port. (Getty Stock Image)

Well, you can take advantage of this. Elisa says: "The cruise lines totally vary but something I tell my clients is, especially on Royal Caribbean, those drink package prices are going to fluctuate a lot from the time you book your cruise up until the day of your cruise.

"It's always cheaper to purchase the drink package before your cruise but the day on which you purchase it might be a bit more expensive than two weeks later when they throw in a great sale.

"A lot of people don't know that these cruise add ons are refundable. So if you purchase the drink package and then three weeks go by... you find the drink package has dropped in price you can cancel your drink package and rebook it for the new lower rate. You can do this up until the week before the cruise."

There's so much more than alcohol too.

With Carnival cruises for example you get speciality coffees, energy drinks, bottled water, teas, and carbonated drinks.

"For Royal Caribbean you're getting all of that plus Johnny Rockets [milkshakes] which is a great perk," Elisa says.

"And for Celebrity Cruise Lines Premium drink package you're getting specialty coffees, teas, bottled water, mocktails."

So before booking, it's worth thinking how much you're actually going to drink and weighing up the costs.

Please drink responsibly. If you want to discuss any issues relating to alcohol in confidence, contact Drinkline on 0300 123 1110, 9am–8pm weekdays and 11am–4pm weekends for advice and support .

Can You Drink On A Cruise At 18? Everything you need to know

W hen most people think about cruising, the first thing that comes to mind is drinking. And for good reason – a cruise is a great opportunity to let loose and enjoy some cocktails with friends.

But what are the rules around drinking on a cruise ship?

How old do you have to be?

Can you drink on a cruise at 18?

Can you drink in public?

And what happens if you get drunk?

As as a travel advisor who has taken many courses to become a cruise specialist, I have learned the ins and outs of cruising.

Read on for answers to all your questions about drinking on a cruise.

The answer to this question cant be answered with one single answer. The fact is, the legal drinking age on cruises depends on the cruise line and the port of embarkation.

Let’s look at the policies of a few of the most popular cruise lines .

Carnival Cruise Line

On Carnival cruise ships, alcohol consumption is only permitted for guests aged 21 and over. This rule applies to Carnival private islands such as Half Moon Cay , and Princess Cay as well.

The only exception to this rule is for Carnival Australia, where passengers 18 and over are allowed to consume and purchase alcohol.

Royal Caribbean

For sailings that begin in North American ports, the legal drinking age onboard Royal Caribbean is 21.

However, if you are sailing on Royal Caribbean from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Asia, the drinking age on board is 18 years old.

Royal Caribbean private islands, such as Perfect Day at Coco Cay , the drinking age will be 21 years old, no matter where the cruise started.

The legal drinking age for all alcoholic drinks on Norwegian Cruise Line ships is 21.

However, NCL does have one advantage over the other lines, and that is that in international waters passengers who are over 18 can drink beer and wine.

Like Disney, this rule only applies if the parent is on board with the minor and signs a consent form.

The legal drinking age on Disney Cruise Line is 21 with one exception.

If you are sailing from Europe, and you are sailing with a parent, that parent can sign a consent form that allows you to drink in their presence only. This option is available for guests 18-20 years old.

Celebrity Cruise Line

The legal drinking age for alcoholic beverages on all Celebrity Cruises ships sailing from North America is 21.

For guests sailing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages onboard any of our Celebrity Cruises ships is 18.

The drinking age on private islands is 21.

Can you drink at 18 on a Caribbean cruise?

The drinking age on most cruise ships is 21. If the cruise originates from a US port, the minimum age to drink on board is 21.

It is a common misconception that minors can drink on board if they are heading to a port where the drinking age is 18, but that is not the case.

You must provide identification when booking your cruise, and that information will be attached to your sail and sign card, and your age will be known by crew members. Cruise crew members will not serve underaged guests.

Can you drink at 18 on a Bahamas cruise?

No, you can not drink on board a cruise to the Bahamas if the cruise has departed from a US Port.

What about private islands in the Bahamas?

Many cruise lines have private islands in the Bahamas such as Half Moon Cay (Carnival) or Castaway Cay (Disney).

The minimum age to drink in the Bahamas is 18, so some assume that once you are on the private island, you can drink as long as you are 18.

This isn’t the case though. If you are on an island owned by the cruise line, the same rules apply as if you are still on board the ship, which means no drinking for anyone under 21.

However, if you get off the ship in a port that is not owned by the cruise line, you are able to follow the rules in that country.

For example, the drinking age in Nassau is 18. So if you have a cruise stop in Nassau Bahamas, you can drink as long as you are 18 while you are in that port.

Cruising Age2118Can I drink on board the ship?yesnoCan I drink on Private Island? yesnoCan I drink in Bimini, Nassau, or Freeport?yesyes

Are there any cruises where you can drink at 18?

Yes, cruises on certain lines like Disney , Royal Caribbean, Carnival Australia, and Celebrity that do not originate in North America you may be able to drink at 18 years old.

Can you drink at 18 in international waters?

Once you are in international waters (more than 3 miles away from US waters) you may drink on Norweigan Cruise Line if your parents sign a waiver.

If your cruise line has a no drinking under 21 policy in place, where you are located in the ocean does not change the rules.

What if I turn 21 during my cruise?

Most cruise lines determine your age based on the age you are the day you board the ship, meaning if you aren’t of drinking age when the cruise starts, you will not be able to drink for the duration of the cruise.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. Norweigan and Celebrity Cruise Lines, both allow a guest who has turned 21 during their sailing to show ID to guest services and have their age updated. Once this is approved by guest services, that passenger will be allowed to purchase alcohol for the remainder of the cruise.

Overdrinking on a cruise

No matter which cruise line you go on, you need to drink responsibly and maintain control of yourself.

Drinking too much can cause a host of problems for you. First, getting too drunk on a moving ship can make it difficult to navigate your way around safely.

You can also become dehydrated easily and become sick in the heat and humidity.

If you become so drunk that you are dangerous or disruptive to other passengers you can find yourself in trouble with ship security, and potentially authorities when you return to port.

You can be confined to your cabin, or even earn yourself a trip to the cruise jail if you become overly intoxicated.

Drinking ages on Cruises Recap

As you can see, the “typical” age that you can drink on a cruise is 21 years or older. While there are exceptions to the rule especially if your cruise does not originate in North America.

It is always best to check your cruise line’s alcohol policy before you board so you know what to expect.

Hiring a travel advisor is a great way to be sure you know all of the facts pertaining to your unique situation as well. As a cruise specialist, I am happy to help you plan your trip (at no additional cost) and help you fully understand all of the rules and regulations pertaining to your sailing and situation.

My heart was pounding outside my chest as I read the words ‘millennial birkin.’

How dare any bag try to oust the coveted Hermès Birkin from its tanned leather thrown? For decades, the Birkin has been a symbol of high fashion; exuding elegance, power, and class with its near-transparent finish, inaccessible price point, and growing army of A-list fans. A birkin, after all, is not just an accessory, it’s a marker of the luxury lifestyle.

If there was another bag that could carry such a significant influence over society, I had to know everything about it. What I didn’t realize, was the fact that I already know everything about it. The bag in question is the slouchy, puffy, minimalistic everyday shoulder bag from the Japanese designer, Uniqlo . A sling I’ve seen thrust across the shoulders of influencers on all of my social media accounts, carried by a good portion of the Lower East Side’s trend-setting pedestrians, and often staring back at me from the window of Uniqlo’s 5th Avenue storefront. The bag came out in 2020 and immediately flew off the shelves, causing supply shortages. Last year, Lyst named the bag the hottest product of their first quarter — and the cheapest to make it on the list. Four years later, shoppers are still rushing to get it.

The $19 Round Shoulder Mini Bag is neither exuberant nor expensive, but it is a perfect emblem of my generation — not millennials, but Gen Z. The unpretentious pouch is genderless, spacious, lightweight, and functional, marked by a worn-in texture that sharply rejects the concept of lavish newness and shaped to fit an active lifestyle, with plenty of room for a smartphone, wallet, and large water bottle. Some have nicknamed it the ‘banana bag,’ for its uniquely curvy crescent build.

The ‘banana bag’ might seem like a slap in the face to some of its more elaborate boomer bag predecessors, but the shoulder bag has spoken: designer bags are aging, and casual cool is in.

The ‘Millennial’ or ‘Gen Z birkin’ is constructed to reflect the values and lifestyle led by Gen Z consumers

We like big serviceable bags. It’s a fact. Form may have topped function in decades past, but Gen Z has put that methodology in reverse. Comfort and wearability come first, always. Contrary to what some may think about our generation, twenty-somethings still have an incessant urge to get off the couch and do things, perhaps since we spent our early twenties cooped up during the pandemic.

We shop for items that reflect our dynamic lifestyles. Consumer data by GWI Luxury shows that 68% of Gen Z respondents reported wearing athleisure clothing a few times a week. These shoppers are looking for items that conform to their active lifestyle — understated pieces that can be worn-hands free — like Uniqlo’s Shoulder Bag , which is also water-repellent, and large enough to fit an assortment of essentials.

While comfort is paramount, younger shoppers also look for fashion as a means of expressing their identities. Unsurprisingly, Gen Z is also 33% more likely than other age groups to purchase items that can be customized. Uniqlo has tapped into this desire by offering customization at various locations. In Scotland, customers at the new Edinburgh store can have their bag embroidered with a can of the country’s famous Scottish soda. The Shoulder Bag is also available in a sea of neutrals and pastels, plus seasonal prints, and patterns.

Why social media loves these bags

Any bag that survives in the Gen Z climate has to be up to par with social media standards. TikTok has become the breeding ground for fashion trends , and the app is also generating billions in e-commerce sales. Gen Z adults are over three times more likely to purchase through TikTok Shop than other adults, according to market research by Emarketer . Affordable fashion products like the Shoulder Bag from Uniqlo seem to perform exceptionally well on the platform.

Back in 2022, creator Caitlin Phillimoore posted a video of herself unpacking an assortment of items from her Uniqlo Shoulder bag: perfume, cookies, keys, headphones, a camera, and even a life-saving epi-pen. She provided just one direction to her followers: “Buy this Uniqlo bag.” The clip went viral overnight, with hundreds commenting on the astounding space-saving capacity, many comparing the girl to “Mary Poppins,” suggesting that the bag must have some magical quality.

Uniqlo’s marketing team has capitalized tremendously on social media content, often resurfacing viral posts through its lifestyle magazine, LifeWear. The publication aims to engage consumers with Uniqlo’s philosophy of designing, “simple, high-quality, everyday clothing with a practical sense of beauty ingenious in detail.” The most recent issue highlights styles that respond to “climate change and social conditions” — mirroring many key interests of younger Gen Z shoppers.

So, while I will never say that the ‘Marry-Poppins-Banana-Millennial-Gen-Z-Birkin-Bag ‘ could displace the Birkin from its esteemed position, I will say that it might just be the next, fresh-faced ‘it bag’ that is here to stay.

Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag

A bag with objects in it

“To me, UNIQLO is the perfect brand for someone looking to buy high-quality basics at affordable prices, Phillipore said in her feature on LifeWear Magazine. “They also have all kinds of unisex items, but most of all, the styles aren’t swayed by the times. The way I see it, having UNIQLO in your wardrobe takes the headaches out of fashion.”

The Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder bag is now offered in nine base shades, including neutrals and pastels. Seasonal drops are also available, with additional patterns and prints. The cross-body strap is completely adjustable, and the durable polyester fabric is dirt-resistant and water-repellent.

Rethinking drinking Alcohol and your health

Drink Size Calculator

Do you know how many “ standard drinks ” (also known as alcoholic drink equivalents) are in a:

21-Fluid Ounce Ballpark Souvenir Cup of Beer?

1.8 standard drinks per container

40-Fluid Ounce Bottle of Malt Liquor?

4.7 standard drinks per container

"Half-Pint" of 80-Proof Distilled Spirits?

4.5 standard drinks per container

25-Fluid Ounce Bottle of Wine?

5 standard drinks per container

Chances are, your cup or beverage label won't tell you the answer—but this calculator will. See this drop-down menu for common container sizes and alcohol content for different beverages.

(The alcohol content of different types of beer, other malt beverages, and wine may vary.)

Convert proof to alc/vol

Enter in the proof of the alcohol in the left field to automatically calculate the alc/vol.

Convert to fluid ounces

Enter in the measurement in milliliters in the left field to automatically calculate the amount in fluid ounces.

Why is this Information Important?

Knowing U.S. standard drink (or alcoholic drink equivalent) sizes and the number of drinks per container can help you make informed decisions about your drinking.

Can't Find your Beverage on the Menu?

To check beverages or container sizes not listed in the drop-down menu, you can enter your own amounts into the calculator. Here’s how:

  • Find the alcohol content of the beverage. For all distilled spirits and most wine, the container label lists the percent "alcohol by volume" or alc/vol. Many beer and malt liquor labels do not list this information, however. To find it, search online for the beverage bottler or other reliable sources.
  • Enter the alc/vol in the first column of the calculator.
  • Enter the container size in the third column of the calculator.

The calculator will show you how many standard drinks the container holds.

Disclaimer: This calculator is for educational purposes only, to show how the number of standard drinks (or alcoholic drink equivalents) and the alcohol content (% alc/vol) of a cocktail can vary depending on the type of spirits and the recipe. Any differences between the data you enter in the calculator and the actual amount in a drink could significantly affect the accuracy of the estimates. Because of this and individual variations in alcohol sensitivity and metabolism, the calculator should not be relied upon to predict blood alcohol level or any other measure. Do not drink if you are under the legal age (21 in the United States), and do not drive or engage in other potentially dangerous activities after drinking.

Less alcohol, or none at all, is one path to better health

Moderate drinking was once thought to have benefits for the heart. But better research methods have thrown cold water on that idea. A growing number of public health experts say if you choose to drink alcohol, you should drink as little as possible. (AP Video: Laura Bargfeld)

It’s wine time. Beer Thirty. Happy hour. Five o’clock somewhere.

Maybe it’s also time to rethink drinking ?

Moderate drinking was once thought to have benefits for the heart, but better research methods have thrown cold water on that.

“Drinking less is a great way to be healthier,” said Dr. Timothy Naimi, who directs the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.

AP AUDIO: Less alcohol, or none at all, is one path to better health.

AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports.

ARE DRINKING GUIDELINES CHANGING?

Guidelines vary a lot from country to country but the overall trend is toward drinking less.

The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Holland and Australia recently reviewed new evidence and lowered their alcohol consumption recommendations. Ireland will require cancer warning labels on alcohol starting in 2026.

“The scientific consensus has shifted due to the overwhelming evidence linking alcohol to over 200 health conditions, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases and injuries,” said Carina Ferreira-Borges, regional adviser for alcohol at the World Health Organization regional office for Europe.

From Dry January to Sober October to bartenders getting creative with non-alcoholic cocktails , there’s a cultural vibe that supports cutting back.

FILE - James Walter uses a phone at home in the Queens borough of New York, on April 7, 2021. Sleep scientists long ago established that insufficient sleep is linked with poor health outcomes, anxiety, obesity and several other negative effects. The research is equally conclusive that smartphones are particularly disruptive to the circadian clock that regulates sleep and other hormones. (AP Photo/Jessie Wardarski, File)

“People my age are way more accepting of it,” said Tessa Weber, 28, of Austin, Texas. She stopped drinking for Dry January this year because she’d noticed alcohol was increasing her anxiety. She liked the results — better sleep, more energy — and has stuck with it.

“It’s good to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol,” Weber said.

WAIT, MODERATE DRINKING DOESN’T HAVE HEALTH BENEFITS?

That idea came from imperfect studies comparing groups of people by how much they drink. Usually, consumption was measured at one point in time. And none of the studies randomly assigned people to drink or not drink, so they couldn’t prove cause and effect.

People who report drinking moderately tend to have higher levels of education, higher incomes and better access to health care, Naimi said.

“It turns out that when you adjust for those things, the benefits tend to disappear,” he said.

Another problem: Most studies didn’t include younger people. Almost half of the people who die from alcohol-related causes die before the age of 50.

“If you’re studying people who survived into middle age, didn’t quit drinking because of a problem and didn’t become a heavy drinker, that’s a very select group,” Naimi said. “It creates an appearance of a benefit for moderate drinkers that is actually a statistical illusion.”

Other studies challenge the idea that alcohol has benefits. These studies compare people with a gene variant that makes it unpleasant to drink to people without the gene variant. People with the variant tend to drink very little or not at all. One of these studies found people with the gene variant have a lower risk of heart disease — another blow to the idea that alcohol protects people from heart problems.

HOW MANY DRINKS CAN I HAVE PER DAY?

That depends.

Drinking raises the risk of several types of cancer , including colon, liver, breast and mouth and throat. Alcohol breaks down in the body into a substance called acetaldehyde, which can damage your cells and stop them from repairing themselves. That creates the conditions for cancer to grow.

Thousands of U.S. deaths per year could be prevented if people followed the government’s dietary guidelines, which advise men to limit themselves to two drinks or fewer per day and women to one drink or fewer per day, Naimi said.

One drink is the equivalent of about one 12-ounce can of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine or a shot of liquor.

Naimi served on an advisory committee that wanted to lower the recommendation for men to one drink per day . That advice was considered and rejected when the federal recommendations came out in 2020.

“The simple message that’s best supported by the evidence is that, if you drink, less is better when it comes to health,” Naimi said.
