Port Vancouver is Canada's "Alaskan" cruise port and homeport for Alaska-based liners during summer. The port handles annually between 240-270 cruise ship calls and over 1 million passengers through Canada Place cruise terminal. Port's total annual economic impact is ~USD 1,6 billion.

As the number and sizes of cruise liners to Vancouver constantly increase, the port is more and more often ranked as congested. The average passenger capacity of the vessels increased by 138% (up to 3100 pax) and the average LOA length increased by 50%, (up to 300 m / 985 ft). However, Canada Place Terminal's capacity is limited as the facility was built for older design ships.

Port Vancouver

Vancouver's cruise shipping business generates nearly US$3 million by each visiting vessel (at Canada Place), nearly 7000 Canadian jobs, ~US$300 million in wages, ~US$840 million to Canada's GDP. As cargo port, Vancouver BC is ranked North America's 3rd largest - after South Louisiana (along Mississippi River) and Houston TX . It serves shipping lines connecting Canada with 170+ countries. Port's annual trade volume is estimated at ~USD 200 billion. It sustains a total of 115,300 Canadian jobs, and generates US$7 billion in wages and US$12 billion in GDP.

The Port Authority company Vancouver Fraser manages the federal seaport lands in and around the city. Vancouver is Canada’s largest cruise port and main homeport for Alaskan cruises. The port has 28 marine terminals serving Ro-Ro ships (car carriers), break-bulk and bulk carriers, container ships and cruise vessels.

• In 2019, BC Government, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and FortisBC (natural gas and electricity provider) signed a deal to establish Westcoast Canada's first STS LNG (ship-to-ship LNG ) marine bunkering. The new service is for ocean-going and large-sized vessels, including BC Ferries ships .
• The project includes a 5-year construction period for building the needed infrastructure. The project's economic contribution was estimated at CAD 1,8 billion (to BC's GDP/during the construction) and an annual impact of CAD 930 million.
• State's LNG bunkering business was inaugurated in 2017. Currently, 5x Ro-Pax ships (BC Ferries) and two cargo ferries (Seaspan) are truck-fuelled with LNG by FortisBC. By the new project, large vessels are LNG-fuelled via barge, being filled up at a jetty on Fraser River (Tilbury Island).

Port's cruising season is May through late-September / early-October. Since 2008, the seaport voluntary purchases renewable / wind energy. At Canada Place terminal, port's cruise business generates (direct economic activity) an average of USD 3 million per visiting vessel. Ship types vary from large and mainstream to top-luxury and small expedition vessels. Inaugurated in 2009, Canada Place terminal's shore-to-ship power capabilities reduce significantly the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by visiting vessels. The new technology allows docked cruise ships to shut down completely their diesel engines and connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid for all the needed onboard electrical power while berthed. The volume of reduced emissions per year is over 2200 tons. Approx 40% of all cruise vessels visiting the port are shorepower enabled. As incentives for using shorepower, the port offers 50% reduction in harbour dues.

In 2010, the port was visited by around 600,000 cruise ship tourists. In 2014 was closed the Ballantyne Pier terminal. Since then, Canada Place is city's only remaining cruise ship terminal.

In 2015, the cruise port handled a total of 228 ship visits (32 different vessels) and over 800,000 passengers. During season 2015, Princess Cruises introduced new roundtrip Vancouver itineraries to Hawaii and US West Coast (California) on Ruby Princess . Port's 2016 statistics included directly generated nearly 7,000 jobs (country-wide), USD 300 million in paid wages and USD 840 million to Canada's GDP.

On May 20, 2017, the cruise port reported a record day with 3 ship calls ( Emerald Princess , Star Princess , ms Nieuw Amsterdam ) and a total of 15,800 cruise tourists. Vancouver police units were assigned to direct traffic. The port authority warned of transportation delays. The record day resulted in hours-long waits at Canada Place terminal (for customs processing) and additional long waits for taxis. The taxicab problem was mainly due to the limited number of cab licenses issued in Vancouver City, as well as the local prohibition of ride-sharing services.

Over Canada Day 2017's long weekend (July 1, 2, 3), a fleet of 8 cruise ships came into Vancouver harbour docking at Canada Place. These ships ( Golden Princess / overnight, Star Princess , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Celebrity Infinity , Norwegian Sun , Crystal Serenity and Disney Wonder) had total economic impact on local businesses estimated at USD 24 million. It was based on the average USD 3 million per cruise liner ashore passenger spending (on restaurants, shopping, pre- and post-voyage hotel stays, local transportation, day tours). In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 236 ship calls (2% increase over 2016) and handled nearly 843,000 passengers (3% increase over 2016). During season 2017, the port had scheduled 33 different liners from the fleets of 15 different companies. The port's economic impact in 2017 is USD 3 million per ship call (including spending on tours, hotels, taxis, shopping, etc).

For season 2018, the cruise port reported a record year - 243 ship calls (7% increase over 2017), 33 different ships, 14 different companies, over 900,000 passengers. On May 23 was celebrated port's 25 millionth arriving cruise ship tourist. Port's largest liner so far is NCL's Norwegian Bliss (capacity 4200 passengers). NCL Bliss departed from Vancouver (Oct 1, 5-day repositioning cruise) to Los Angeles via San Francisco . Port's 1 millionth cruise passenger mark was reached in 2002 (1,060383 million).

In 2018-H1 (first half), port's containerized cargo volumes increased by 5% (over 2017-H1) to the record number 1,64 million TEU-containers. The increase was due to increasing international demand for Canadian goods and Canadian demand for Asian goods. Beside container shipping trade, port's results also showed:

• increase in potash (22,7%), autos (8%), coal (8,9%), forest (4%) and petroleum (40,2%) products
• decline in grain (10,2%, crops-feed), chemicals-minerals (5%), ores-concentrates (27,8%). Port's 2018-H1 cargo traffic (over 2017-H1) report included:
• Overall cargo increased 4,4% - to total 72,1 million tons.
• Auto units increased 8,3%, to total 236396.
• Breakbulk cargoes increased 14,4 % - to total 8,8 million tons, including 21,1% in domestic traffic.
• Drybulk cargoes increased 0,7%.
• Liquid bulk cargoes increased 28,3%, including 40,2% in petroleum products.
• TEU-container shipping increased 5,1% - to total 1,64 million.
• Cruise shipping traffic increased 12,7%.

For season 2019 (March 29 through November 1), the number of handled ship calls was 288 (+22% over 2018), with estimated 1,077 million passengers. Berth bookings 2019 were made by 24 brands/companies for 41 different vessels. New cruise lines included Azamara (ship Azamara Quest ), Cunard ( MS Queen Elizabeth ), Viking Ocean ( MS Viking Orion ) and Hurtigruten ( MS Roald Amundsen ). Other new liners (with maiden port calls) included Ovation OTS , Celebrity Eclipse , Norwegian Joy , Royal Princess , Star Legend , Silver Muse , L’Austral .

In mid-July 2020 was opened G3 Terminal Vancouver (grain export terminal, construction works started in March 2017.) featuring modern design, loop track elevators, a direct railway link for taking Canadian Prairies grain via trains (and loading it onto drybulk cargo ships), max capacity 3x 150-car trains and storage capacity 180,000 MT (metric tonnes). Trains unload while in motion and go back to the terminal’s elevators without detaching from the locomotives. At G3’s berth/dock are installed 3x loaders that move the grain (max capacity 6500 tons per hour) onto the ship. G3 Terminal Vancouver is a joint-venture between Western Stevedoring Company Ltd and G3 Global Holdings - a joint-venture between Bunge Ltd (US-based agribusiness and food company) and SALIC Canada Ltd (subsidiary of SALIC-Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company).

Despite the Coronavirus crisis, 2020 became a record-breaking year in Vancouver Port's 108-year history by revenues (~USD 50 million / ~EUR 42M) or 15% increase over 2019. Moved through the seaport were 7+ million MT (metric tonnes) of commodities, 5,4+ million MT of grain, 0,3+ million MT of copper concentrate, 2700+ wind turbines, ~90,000 automobiles.

For season 2022 (April 10 thru November 2) the cruise port handled 307 ship calls (+6,5% over 2019's 288 visits/~85% from homeported vessels, including 10x maiden calls and 18x shorepower berthings) and ~815,000 tourists.

2023 (April 12th thru October 24th) was Port Vancouver's record year, with booked a total of 332 cruise ship berthings (~9% increase over 2022) and ~1,25 million tourists (+54% over 2022 and +10% over 2019).

For 2024 (March 11th thru October 29th), the Port had scheduled/booked a total of 329 ship berthings, with projected ~1,27 million passengers to pass through the Canada Place Terminal (~2% increase over 2023).

In October 2023, Seaspan Vancouver Drydock (in North Vancouver/on 203 Esplanade E) received permit approval from the Port Authority to extend its drydock facilities and expand the infrastructure in order to be able to provide services (ship repairs and maintenance works) to larger vessels. The project included the extension of Seaspan's water lot by 130 ft/40 m and the addition of two new drydocks (smaller) plus a floating pontoon, located to the west of the old drydocks. The project's completion was slated for 2024-Q4.

Vancouver cruise terminal

Canada's Government established Port Metro Vancouver (locode CAVAN) in January 2008. Today, the Port is ranked North America's fourth-largest and Canada's largest by annually handled tonnage. Port Vancouver is in western Canada, at British Colombia’s southwestern corner. Its cruise schedule lists voyages from spring through fall, with vessels departing from Canada Place Ship Terminal.

The Terminal's address is "Canada Place Pier, 99 Canada Place Vancouver, BC, Canada".

Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal

The Canada Place Vancouver terminal was inaugurated on April 28, 1986. The facility's design features 5 sail-shaped roofs. Except the building, other facilities include VINCI Car Park, Port Metro Office, World Trade Center Office, Pan-Pacific Hotel.

At Canada Place Terminal are available restrooms, baggage trolleys, a snack shop. From the Terminal are directly accessed ship berths North (length 274 m / 900 ft), East (506 m / 1660 ft) and West (326 m / 1070 ft).

In May 2015, Canada Place Vancouver became the world's first cruise terminal with a total of 10x BorderXpress APC kiosks (abbrev "Automated Passport Control"). The project was a collaboration of Port Metro Vancouver and the Vancouver Airport Authority.

• In comparison to the traditional clearance process, the new computerized kiosks increased 4 times the terminal's passenger processing rates. The terminal's US Customs and Border Protection area is utilized prior to ship embarkation on Canada to Alaska cruise itineraries.
• Cruise tourists using BorderXpress APCs at Port Metro Vancouver proceed directly to the self-service kiosks in the passenger processing area. Then they simply have to follow the on-screen instructions, scan their passports and answer some customs declaration questions. Then embarking passengers receive a receipt that confirms their information and continue to a US Customs officer to finalize their processing.
• The overall result was increased efficiency, less congestion, faster customs processing and shorter wait times.
• Cruise passengers eligible for BorderXpress APCs are American and Canadian passport holders, as well as US Permanent Residents.
• The service is available at no cost to the user and pre-registration is not required.

Cruise terminal luggage storage and delivery

Ballantyne Pier Terminal

The Ballantyne terminal is located on 851 Centennial Road, Vancouver. It looks like a commercial dock after its 1995 renovation and extensions. Amenities include luggage carts, restrooms, snack concessions, security and taxi ranks. The berth is only one – East, 1200 ft.

7-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise on American Cruise Lines

Canada and New England aren't the only regions of the U.S. known for their fall foliage. American Cruise Lines offers several small-ship sailings in October to other leaf-peeping regions, including the Hudson River Valley, the Upper Mississippi and the Chesapeake Bay.

12-day Canada and New England Fall Foliage cruise on Seabourn

Smaller ships can visit more off-the-beaten-path ports than their big-ship counterparts. Seabourn 's 458-passenger Seabourn Quest (2024) and Seabourn Sojourn (2025) sail 12-day cruises between New York and Montreal. Princess is launching an all-inclusive, 4-month, around-the-world cruise for $20,000— see what it'll be like

• Princess Cruises announced a 114-day  world cruise to 52 destinations in 2026, starting at $20,000 per person. 
• Guests who book early would get a free, all-inclusive package, a first for Princess' global itineraries.
• Extended and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the vacation industry.

Princess Cruise's new around-the-world voyage will hit two vacation trends in one itinerary.

In January 2026, the company says its Coral Princess will embark on a 114-day cruise to 52 ports in 28 countries and six continents — more destinations than any of its previous global sailings .

It's the Carnival Corp brand's latest appeal to the extended cruising trend . But it's not the only fad this four-month vacation is targeting.

The sailing, which starts at $20,000 per person, also marks the first time Princess is offering a complimentary all-inclusive package as a way to entice early bookings.

Ultra-long and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the industry.

Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, and Oceania's 2024 around-the-world cruises all sold out before departing in January. The former was fully booked within three hours, while every cabin on the latter was called for in 30 minutes.

Besides being high-end, these three companies share one commonality: some level of all-inclusiveness , as is common with premium cruise lines.

Mass-market cruise companies rarely go the all-inclusive route.

Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are generally beloved for their affordability.

But if you want to experience all their ships have to offer, be prepared to face a list of up-charged amenities like pay-to-play rides and specialty restaurants . After all, there's a reason their base fares are much cheaper than their increasingly popular ultra-luxury, all-inclusive counterparts.

But Princess has been increasingly vying for a slice of the luxury cruiser pie.

The cruise line says guests who book its 2026 world cruise early (that is, by the end of October) will receive its most inclusive Princess Premier package for free. The perk — launched two years ago — covers amenities that typically have a fee, like WiFi, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, and workout classes.

Travelers who reserve one of the ship's high-end cabins by the same deadline would also receive complimentary airport transfers and airfare, services normally exclusively offered by luxury cruise lines .

The itinerary would have two roundtrip embarkation options: Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 5, 2026, or Los Angeles 16 days later.

From there, the 2,000-guest Coral Princess would sail more than 35,000 nautical miles to ports in North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Central and South America.

It wouldn't be Princess' longest voyage — that title goes to its 116-day world cruise in 2025 — but it would be one of its most destination-heavy.

While two days longer, next year's around-the-world cruise would hit six fewer ports and four fewer countries than its 2026 counterpart.

According to the itinerary, about half of the 2026 voyage consists of sea days.

That's a lot of time on the water with no land in sight. Luckily, travelers can keep themselves entertained by attending lectures and programs related to the destinations, leisuring around the adult-only lounge, or taking a dip in Coral Princess' four pools.

The 21-year-old ship also has 10 places to grab a bite, although the Italian and steakhouse restaurants are considered specialty. Premier is the cruise line's most inclusive package, but it only includes 16 free dinners at these upcharge restaurants, paced once a week.

Princess is still a mass-market cruise line, after all.

The company has been increasingly dangling its inclusive package as a big perk.

The company says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US in October with its first-ever Sanctuary Collection . Travelers who splurge on these expensive and luxurious accommodations would be rewarded with two major benefits: a private lounge and Princess Premier.

Why these immigrants to Canada say they're thinking about leaving, or have already moved on

For some immigrants, their dreams of permanently settling in Canada have taken an unexpected twist.

Canada is grappling not only with a surge of immigrants arriving in the country, but also those who are leaving.

The number of newcomers leaving Canada has been steadily increasing since the 1980s, according to a 2023 study.

Beyond finding better job opportunities and a higher standard of living elsewhere, newcomers' reasons for leaving may be more complex, and are sometimes a personal choice rather than a practical decision or necessity.

CTVNews.ca spoke with three immigrants who settled in Canada about why they left or why life in another country is now seeming more appealing.

'Disappointed' in Canada

Nadia Bilal said her husband was making triple the salary as an information technology professional in Saudi Arabia, but he quit his job so their family could move to Canada.

Bilal, a 40-year-old robotics and coding teacher who lives in Mississauga, Ont., said her family landed in Canada in August 2017. Their savings was enough to help them survive as her husband looked for a job, which he found within five months.

Originally from Pakistan, she said she sought the dream of a better life and future for herself and her family, and that they found it during the first few years they were in Canada. Though Canada is inclusive and respectful towards religion, something the family sought out, she said now she isn't so sure it's the place they could realize their dreams.

Bilal said her husband is "pretty happy" with his still-high-paying job in IT, and added all of her family members have become Canadian citizens.

But she's now trying to convince him that they should move out of Canada.

"I feel disappointed," Bilal said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca. "I was pretty happy living in this country. … I would have grown old right in this country. But now I'm reconsidering that."

Initially, she said, she expected Canada to have a safe environment and a good health-care system.

"Like when you get taxed so highly, you expect these things to be given, right? But after the pandemic, … there is a downward trend."

With three children aged 15, 13 and just 22 months, she felt less safe going out as she noticed what she described as a rise in crime, road rage and general law breaking.

Life after the pandemic also meant a higher cost of living.

The high cost of housing was a problem. Bilal said she and her family were forced to move out of their three-bedroom rental home in January because, she alleges, their landlord wanted to illegally raise the rent from $2,700 to $3,000.

"We cannot even afford a house for ourselves and we are struggling with rent," she said, noting the expenses involved in raising three children and supporting her in-laws, including groceries and rent for a large enough home.

"It's hard to save money even though my husband makes over $120,000 a year."

As for health care, she said she didn't feel supported by her gynecologist through her last pregnancy, during which she dealt with a condition called esophageal achalasia that made it "really difficult."

Yearning for change

Duncan Yuen says he and his then-wife were yearning for change when they decided to uproot their young family from Canada to New Zealand in 1995. His daughter was then seven and his son was four.

A year before their move, Yuen, then 32, had been laid off from his computer programming job at a large American company in Toronto.

"It wasn't that we dislike Canada," Yuen, now 62, said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca from Auckland. "I decided to try something new. And my ex-wife at that time also wanted to try that too, so we end up in New Zealand."

In addition to a change in lifestyle, a warmer climate was appealing. He said his wife, originally from St. Catharines, Ont., found Toronto a bit too crowded.

"So she wanted to move to a quieter place," he said. "She didn't really like Toronto so much. We lived in a townhouse. The neighbours are very close."

His mother, two sisters and in-laws from his wife's side remained in Canada, so the decision wasn't easy. Still, they decided to try a new life elsewhere.

The computer science industry was changing very fast, but he found a software consulting job just three months after arriving in New Zealand. He later developed new skills and got "much better" jobs, including as a computer system administrator.

Though New Zealand was similar to Canada in many ways since it was an English-speaking country, Yuen said, Auckland was smaller than Toronto, the cost of living was high and people generally earned less money there than in Canada.

Still, he and his family liked the moderate weather, with rainy winters and summers that don't get too hot, and they liked the friendly people.

Yuen, who immigrated to Canada as a foreign student from Hong Kong in 1979, feels his roots are in both Canada and New Zealand. His now-ex-wife and daughter decided to stay in New Zealand as well, because they liked life there, but his son, now in his 30s, moved back to Canada four years ago.

"I noticed as an immigrant that some people, like myself, I always have a sense of belonging wherever I move to," he said. "Whereas some people, they always feel like they have a piece left behind, that the roots (are) somewhere else. So my son feels like his roots are in Canada. It's different for different people."

Came for love, left for family

After 25 years in Canada, Henriëtte Breunis left the place where she loved, lived and worked in September 2023.

Love brought Breunis to Canada in 1999, when she met her late partner. It was love again that led to the 72-year-old's decision to return to her native country, the Netherlands, so she could help care for her son.

A stroke in 2018 left her son, Marco, with brain damage. His left side is paralyzed, resulting in him using a wheelchair. Her friend was accompanying her son to doctor's appointments. The friend also paid Marco weekly visits until the spring of 2023, when she moved to the countryside and it was no longer realistic to spend so much time in the capital.

So, in August 2023, Breunis retired from working as a research co-ordinator at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto and moved back to the Netherlands to be her 54-year-old son's caregiver.

"He started needing more and more help and he lives in an assisted living facility, but the assisted living is only indoors," she said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca from Amsterdam. "So I came here to help him do more things outside the house … going to concerts and to a museum; every now and then go out for dinner."

Before moving, she researched whether he could move to Canada to receive the care, but says it wasn't financially feasible.

"His care is so expensive that I would never be able to afford it," she explained. "In Canada, you can bring somebody with an existing condition but the government would not pay more cost than for the average cost per capita in Canada and that would not be enough."

Immigrants applying to come to Canada must meet requirements, some of which are specific to those who have medical conditions that may place excessive demand on the health or social services. The Canadian government will only pay a maximum of $26,220 per year over five years for people with an existing condition, she said, which isn't sufficient for her son's care needs.

In the Netherlands, health care is privatized but long-term care, which applies to her son, is public, she said.

If she was able to cover the cost of his care in Canada, she said, she would have stayed in the country.

Still, she said the health-care system in the Netherlands is "very expensive." Living on a Dutch and Canadian pension and her savings, she said she herself pays $300 a month for private health-care insurance and the taxes are higher there.

Her son's care costs about 80,000 euros per year (C$120,000), she said, most of which is covered by the Dutch government. Based on income, he only pays the equivalent of about C$600 monthly for care that includes nurses and personal support workers who take care of him seven days a week. Though he no longer can work, he receives a long-term disability benefit from the government, based on 80 per cent of the income he had when he was working.

His apartment costs $15,000 to rent per year, she added.

"So he lives fairly independently. He has a two-bedroom apartment. He has day programs where he can do art, and I don't have to live with him," she said.

Her son is happy to have her around, she said, but she misses life and her friends in Toronto. She said she gave up her Dutch citizenship so she could become a Canadian citizen in 2005.

Breunis, who was divorced, initially moved to Canada in 1999 when her daughter was studying in university and her son was working, so neither child moved with her. She decided to immigrate so she could be with her Dutch-Canadian partner, Breunis Kamphorst. He had befriended her after finding out her last name was the same as his first name. Tragedy struck soon after she started her new life in Canada, as he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in November 1999. He died a year later.

She said she found Canada more welcoming to immigrants than the Netherlands, and added, "I especially miss the melting pot of all the cultures that we have in Canada."

Seasoned cruisers know you can take your travel up a level by boarding a themed cruise, exploring the seas with those with the same passions and interests as you.

Whether you adore the cheesy Christmas movies that come out every year or you're a hip-hop fanatic, here are some of the top-themed cruises sailing out of Florida over the next year.

Big Nude Boat

The " Big Nude Boat " cruise is an 11-day adventure set for 2025 on the Norwegian Pearl, departing from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14 (just in time for Valentine's Day).

"Bare Necessities’ newest nude cruise is a private island double-dip with a brand new travel partner," the company wrote on its website .

The itinerary includes stops at the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia. Rates for an inside cabin start at $2,000 per person and go to up to $33,000 for a top room.

Guests are encouraged to park their bare behinds on towels provided on board in areas including the pool deck and the buffet area, according to the website.

"Passengers can easily follow our rule on nudist etiquette by always placing a towel down before sitting," it reads. "Remember to pack a swimsuit; not all excursions are clothing optional."

In My Cruise Era

The “ In My Cruise Era … ” is a  Taylor Swift-themed cruise  that is set to launch from Port of Miami on Oct. 21,

The cruise, on a Royal Caribbean ship, leaves for the Bahamas the day after Swift 's final show of her three-day stop in Miami. According to the website, the cruise fare includes stateroom accommodations, dinner in the main dining room nightly as well as additional buffet and a la carte options around the ship. It also includes entertainment.

The Hallmark Channel, holiday season film factory, will host a Christmas Cruise that will embark on a four-night sailing on Nov. 5 from Miami. According to USA Today, passengers will be able to experience holiday cheer on the high seas, complete with cookie making, “carol-oke,” photo ops with network stars, and an exclusive movie premiere of one of the famed Countdown to Christmas films.

The Christmas cruise will take place aboard the Norwegian Gem Cruise Ship, a 965-foot Jewel-class ship.

The company announced that the cruise has already sold out, sharing to USA TODAY via email last year: "Christmas cheer filled every tier, and now the first ever Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise is SOLD OUT."

Rock the Bells Cruise

Hip Hop Hooray! The Rock the Bells Cruise: A Hip-Hop Experience is a four-day jam session founded by LL Cool J back in 2023. After seeing major success last year, the cruise is returning for 2024.

MCs, DJs, and producers will lead nonstop parties and live performances on the Norwegian Gem from Nov. 13 through 17. The cruise leaves from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau.

Some of the acts lined up for the cruise include Busta Rhymes, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Method Man & Redman, Scarface, Kid Capri and more.

Comic-Con: The Cruise

Get ready to join the CCU (Cruise Cinematic Universe). San Diego Comic-Con and Entertainment Cruise Productions have team up for Comic-Con: The Cruise . It will run from Feb. 5 through 9 of 2025.

Here are AAA’s trend forecasts for the best times to cruise in 2024, according to the kind of cruise you choose:

The Caribbean  is popular year-round, but spring and summer are the most popular sailing times.

Alaska cruise  season runs from May to September. Because this is an abbreviated period, there’s more competition for availability.

Weekend cruises  have gained popularity in recent years. Weekend warriors have realized the value an all-inclusive cruise compared to a weekend getaway in a big city resort. Cruise lines have recognized this growing trend and are making weekend cruises more of a priority in 2024, by mobilizing some of their newest ships to accessible ports for weekend excursions.

European river cruising  is now operational year-round. Because European travel is most popular during the summer, travelers can avoid the crowds and find lower priced cruises and airfares in the early and later parts of the year.

AI chip startup DEEPX secures $80M Series C at a $529M valuation

Kingston cruise companies fear losing thousands of passengers while awaiting bridge repair

Cruise boat operators in Kingston, Ont., say they're already losing passengers and are poised to lose tens of thousands more if the federal government sticks to its timeline for fixing the LaSalle Causeway.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) estimates the causeway — damaged at the end of March and closed to all traffic since — won't be fixed until July.

Now more than a month since the unexpected closure, companies have described the department having a "lack of urgency" in finding a solution.

"It's extraordinarily frustrating," said Eric Ferguson, general manager with Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises. 

"We believe that the federal government can take action on some of these things faster ... They need to do it in a matter of weeks, not months."

The companies, along with thousands of others who rely on the century-old crossing, have been waiting for information on when it will reopen. 

A statement shared by PSPC late Friday afternoon wasn't what they wanted to hear.

The department said repairs are expected to take eight to 10 weeks, adding that timeline could change if any "unforeseen issues" are uncovered.

While that work is underway, the government said it's "exploring" other options to allow pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle and marine traffic to resume.

The cruise operators had proposed solutions to free their boats, including temporarily removing a concrete span to let them through. Ferguson said PSPC's line about weighing other options could give the impression the marine problem might be solved sooner, but that's not the case.

"You might read it and think that the federal government is planning to act fast for boats," he said.

"They're not. Their plan is to move slow. That's not acceptable."

According to what cruise boat companies have been told, taking out part of the crossing would take 12 to 14 weeks — even longer than the current timeline for fixing the bridge.

Survival at risk from 'lack of urgency'

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, which has already been forced to cancel two trips on The Canadian Empress, said last month it was prepared to take the federal government to court over its "bungled bridge overhaul."

The company hired its crew for the season in March and will continue paying and training them, but they're essentially "hanging in the wind," said marketing co-ordinator Daniel Beals.

After weathering pandemic closures, "we don't want the reason we don't survive to be a lack of urgency from the federal government," he added.

Tourism Kingston CEO Megan Knott described the cruises as an anchor attraction for the city.

"If you think about 150 people on a cruise per day, that's about $40,000 in economic impact for one cruise. You have multiple cruises a day, over multiple months a year," she told CBC, just over two weeks into the causeway closure.

"It's really important that we figure out how to bring those boats back."

PSPC trying to 'accelerate' opening: minister

Canada's minister of Public Services and Procurement said he recognizes how important the waterway is for the community and local businesses, but stressed the need to ensure the causeway is safe.

"Every possible way to accelerate the opening of the bridge ... is considered and we will put into place," Jean-Yves Duclos told reporters following question period on Monday.

Ferguson, from Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises, questioned why PSPC waited so long to share how long the closure would be.

He said the government should offer companies funding to replace lost revenue, so they can continue to employ staff and called for PSPC to speed up its search for a fix, including paying for cranes to lift smaller boats over the causeway.

All the while, his company is booking up the Island Queen — their one boat on the right side of the bridge — as a way to absorb a tidal wave of cancellations while they await a solution.

"Right now those calls are coming every few days. Soon those calls will be every hour," said Ferguson. "The impacts have already begun. The federal government is causing those impacts."

Cruise ship sails into New York City port with 44-foot dead whale across its bow

A cruise ship sailed into a New York City port with a 44-foot dead whale across its bow, marine authorities said.

The whale, identified as an endangered sei whale, was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on Saturday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez said.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said the whale was on the MSC Meraviglia, which docked at Brooklyn before sailing to ports in New England and Canada.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the officials said, adding that the Geneva-based MSC Cruises follows all regulations designed to protect whales, such as altering itineraries in certain regions to avoid hitting the animals.

The dead whale was towed to shore in Sandy Hook, N.J., to allow for better access to equipment and to conduct a necropsy, Gomez said.

The necropsy, an autopsy on an animal, was conducted Tuesday, Gomez said. Samples collected from the whale will help biologists determine whether it was already dead when it was struck by the ship, she said.

Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, Gomez said. They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected.

LAUDERDALE, Fla., (May 7, 2024)  – Princess Cruises today announced its return to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a season of Southern Caribbean cruises onboard Grand Princess, from October 2025 through March 2026. This vibrant capital city of Puerto Rico offers rich history and culture with must-see attractions for Princess guests pre- and post-cruise. These seven-day cruises, which visit more ports than any other 7-day Princess cruise to the Caribbean, are on sale May 16.
