Your Guide To Festival Coach Hire
- Guide to festival coach hire
Published: 25th March 2022
2023's summer festivals are poised to be the most exciting yet. What better way to head to the festival than by booking a coach to get you from door to campsites with ease?
Whether it’s a day festival or you’re camping on-site, we’ve put together some reasons why hiring a coach for your transport to a festival is a good idea so let’s get started…
Save your group money
To save space and avoid congestion, most major festivals charge extortionate car parking fees in addition to the price of festival tickets. To help keep costs low, coach hire has proved to be a fantastic alternative. Not only do you save money on parking fees but you get to travel with all your friends, which leads us nicely onto the next point…
You can travel all together
When you travel by coach you’ll arrive on time and altogether ready to get the party started. Coaches have plenty of space and legroom, so there’s no need to worry about being crammed in a car with your wellies, tents, and backpacks.
All of your luggage is also included with coach hire so there’s no additional cost if you need an extra bag or two, as long as it fits in the luggage hold!
No need for a designated driver
What better way to enjoy live music than with no concerns about who is driving you there and back?
When you hire a coach you can all enjoy a comfy seat so you can get the party started by traveling together or catch up on some post-festival Zzz’s.
Plus with our VIP coaches, you can enjoy a drink or two en route to really kick start the fun! Head to our VIP page for further information.

We are partnered with Tuned in Travel to offer sustainable travel options to the festival. These are are all carbon offset via ecolibrium.
This year we offer return journeys from the following locations:
The exact pick up and drop off times will be communicated in the month leading up to the event.
We have discounted these tickets to incentivise using our most sustainable travel option. Our combined travel emissions to the festival contributes between 60%-80% to an event’s overall carbon footprint so we are committed to help reduce this as much as possible.

Glastonbury Festival expands travel options as ticket demand skyrockets
The official coach travel partner of Glastonbury Festival has added 34 more departures this year to meet the growing demand from music fans.
- 10:53, 12 APR 2024
Glastonbury is one of the UKs biggest festivals, attracting around 200,000 people each year. With the biggest names in music play the Glastonbury stages, trying to secure tickets is a lengthy process and getting there can also prove to be a serious headache if you leave it too late .
If you are one of the lucky ones to get your hands on tickets before they sold out, you may be planning how to travel to the festival site. This year, the official coach travel partner of Glastonbury Festival, National Express has announced they will be adding plenty more services for the event .
The company plans to operate from 109 locations across the UK, adding 34 more departures this year to meet growing demand. The coach operator is set to transport over 20 per cent more passengers compared to 2023, with a limited number of seats still available for booking. Return tickets start from just £31.50 .

In a bid to make the journey as convenient as possible for festival-goers, National Express will establish a pop-up coach station within 100 metres of the festival gates.
John Boughton, commercial director at National Express, commented: "Demand for affordable and reliable public transport has never been greater, and that includes travel to the summer's hottest festivals and events .
"We have over 25 years' experience operating special services direct to Glastonbury Festival and with our extensive nationwide network of modern coaches, we're able to step up and put on additional routes to help even more people choose us as the savvy way to travel to the festival. It's also good for the environment as the least carbon-intensive public transport option."
In addition to regional coach services, the company will run a fleet of double-decker electric buses on a high-frequency shuttle service between Bristol Bus Station and Worthy Farm. These buses produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, and each fully charged electric bus can cover up to 173 miles, saving 348kg of carbon emissions compared with diesel buses.
Tickets are available HERE and come with a generous luggage allowance of 20kg in the hold, plus one piece of soft hand luggage .
Stars such as Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, Burna Boy, Cyndi Lauper, Dua Lipa, SZA, and Coldplay are set to take the stage at Glastonbury this summer. Emily Eavis, daughter of festival founder Michael Eavis, expressed gratitude to fans on Instagram for their enthusiasm: "Just heard that we had our highest percentage of ticket balances paid ever! Incredible. Thanks so much everyone.
"There will be a resale of the (very limited) returned tickets later this month. Info to follow on that."

Music to eco-conscious ears: 10 sustainable festivals in the UK and Europe
With festivals attempting to clean up their shocking environmental record, we pick the best planet-friendly events, all accessible without flying
P lastic cutlery, abandoned tents, artists flown in to perform … the traditional music festival has not been a bastion of eco-friendliness. Now several UK and European events are introducing measures to reduce their impact, using locally sourced food, low-emission transport and renewable energy. Sustainability-minded shows range from new-generation affairs, such as Italy’s Terraforma, to veterans like the Isle of Wight festival.
Green Gathering, Monmouthshire
The family-friendly Green Gathering festival (3-6 August) usually hosts a diverse bill, from sea shanty-loving bands to politically conscious rappers – though 2023’s lineup remains TBC. This year the festival that won the 2023 International Greener festival award (AGF) from environmental non-profit A Greener Future will feature 100% renewable power, veggie food, upcycling workshops and a non-pushy promotion of low-impact living. Shuttle buses from Chepstow railway station, weekend camping from £130
DGTL Amsterdam
Two more International AGF awards went to DGTL ’s Dutch edition: for green transport and for innovation with reusables (called circularity). The latter is apt for an electronica festival that claims to be uniquely circular among major dance events. This year’s festival will run from 7-9 April in Amsterdam-Noord’s former dockyards. DGTL has a plant-based, waste-free food court and recycles water. Diesel is prohibited and, when necessary, artists – led in 2023 by Honey Dijon and Moderat – fly in using sustainable aviation fuel. Eurostar from London to Amsterdam takes around four hours , weekend tickets from €136
Isle of Wight festival
Running from 15-18 June, 2023’s edition of the Isle of Wight festival stars Pulp, George Ezra and the Chemical Brothers. It will also employ a local biogas firm, using turf from the festival site, to generate 950,000kWh of electricity – which is more than 300 households’ annual usage. This initiative accompanies a zero-waste pledge, including the use of compostable tableware. Water pipes are donated to local farms. Free festival buses operate from each island ferry terminal; on the mainland, Big Green Coach will run carbon-neutral shuttles from around Britain, weekend camping tickets from £225
We Love Green, Paris
Phoenix, Bon Iver and rapper Orelsan headline We Love Green this summer from 2-4 June. Held in the Bois de Vincennes park in Paris, this sustainability pioneer has operated on renewable energy for more than a decade. Single-use plastics have been outlawed, and the organic food is locally sourced. Artists are lobbied to arrive in a eco-friendly fashion. Eurostar trains take around two hours from London to Paris. There’s no parking, so make for Château de Vincennes station on Metro line 1 . Weekend tickets from €159, you must stay off-site
Hebridean Celtic festival, Lewis, Outer Hebrides
The Proclaimers will conclude 2023’s Hebridean Celtic festival , on the island of Lewis. Taking place from 12-15 July, and also starring celtic-fusion outfit Talisk and trad-rock faves Skerryvore, it’s an event with a green soul. Not only are zero-carbon alternatives favoured over generators – saving the equivalent of 27 return car journeys to Edinburgh – but equipment haulage is minimised and there’s been no single-use plastic since 2018. Caledonian MacBrayne runs car and passenger ferries from Ullapool to Stornoway; you must stay off-site. Weekend tickets from £120
Øya festival, Oslo
The Tøyenparken site is so close to central Oslo that 98% of visitors come to Øyafestivalen on foot, by bike or by public transport. This year’s events run from 8-12 August and feature Blur, Grammy-nominated Wizkid and Norwegian singer-songwriter Sigrid. Øya has no fossil-fuel generators and uses the city’s power grid instead. It swerves plastic seating courtesy of its amphitheatre-like hillside location. Rubbish is hand-sorted into 15 categories, and artists travel in reduced-emissions cars. Tøyen metro station is five minutes’ walk away; you must stay off-site. Weekend tickets from £245
after newsletter promotion
Shambala, Northamptonshire
According to the Association of Independent Festivals, an estimated 250,000 tents are abandoned at UK music festivals annually – with most of them non-recyclable. None were left at last year’s Shambala, however. Other tenets include meat, fish and dairy milk all being outlawed and a variety of car-free transport schemes. On a rural Northamptonshire estate, the theatrical fiesta is inclusive and anti-corporate. The acts for this year’s Shambala (24-27 August) haven’t been announced yet, though lineups favour genre-hopping up-and-comers over big names. Return coaches and overnight, guided cycling packages run from Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, London, Manchester and Sheffield. Weekend camping tickets including coach travel from £247
Terraforma, near Milan
Taking its name from the process of creating an atmosphere and topography similar to the environment of Earth, Terraforma takes place in a wooded estate about 10 miles north of Milan and features experimental (and often electronic) musicians. The roster for this year (9-11 June) remains under wraps; Lafawndah and MC Yallah dazzled last year. Sustainability is a focus, from wooden stages to recycling stations, biodegradable crockery, electric fleets and low-impact solar-powered lighting. The quickest rail journeys, visit Rail Europe , from London to Milan via Paris take 10 hours. Weekend camping tickets from €175
Love Trails, Gower peninsula
Featuring Biig Piig and High Contrast, this year’s Love Trails (6-9 July) mixes coastline jogs, rock climbing, coasteering, swimming and yoga with live acts and DJ sets in the evenings. Based at ruined Weobley Castle on the Gower peninsula, it has introduced chemical-free compost loos, and three-quarters of food suppliers are from south Wales. Visitors can support rainforest-protection schemes and reduce carbon emissions by booking coaches (from Bristol, Cardiff and London) or cycling travel packages. Gowerton railway station is nine miles away. Weekend camping tickets from £179
Pohoda festival, Slovakia
The Pohoda festival , which has been running since 1997, has long been green-hearted. Among current initiatives are water-saving vacuum toilets, a mobile solar-power station and 17 waste-separation points. This year it runs from 6-8 July, with Jamie xx, Central Cee and Suzanne Vega typifying an ever-eclectic policy that champions everything from electropunk to chamber music. The current venue is Trenčín airport, outside the northern town of the same name. Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

A guide to Moscow’s summer festivals
May 26, 2018 • 4 min read
People attend open-air concert during Usadba Jazz festival at the Archangelskoye Estate @ Anton Gvozdikov / Shutterstock
Believe it or not, in summer Moscow usually gets rather hot. It’s also the season when the city is fully awake, with more events happening than at any other time of the year. Almost every weekend a new market, exhibition or festival takes place, making it pretty hard to choose which one to attend.
Of course, the highlight of this summer in the Russian capital will be the celebration of football, as Moscow gets ready to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup (from 14 June to 15 July) along with 10 other cities across the country. Nevertheless, over the years some big annual events have become an integral – and fun – part of Moscow’s summer culture. Here are our top picks.
Usadba Jazz at Arkhangelskoe
This iconic open-air jazz festival has been taking place in Moscow for over a decade, making it one of the city’s favourite outdoor events. The location is always the same – the gorgeous 19th-century Arkhangelskoe Estate and its surroundings. Apart from some great classical and modern jazz, blues, funk, soul and world music, there’s a new theme each year: in 2017 it was ecology, introducing some local eco-designers and culinary artists to jazz-loving Muscovites.
Dates: 2–3 June 2018
Red Square Book Fest
This year Moscow’s annual book festival will be taking over the historic Red Square for the fourth time. The event celebrates the reading culture, introduces the best local publishing houses, and allows visitors to purchase books, attend masterclasses and listen to some well-known modern Russian writers. The program covers several themes, including fiction, non-fiction, ebooks, children’s and educational literature, antique and secondhand books, as well as Russian regions. Famous Russian museums present their publishing projects and catalogues, and there are live concerts and performances throughout the festival.
Dates: 3–6 June 2018
Moscow Flower Show
Who knew Moscow could be a rose? Last year a new sort of rose was created just to celebrate the 870th anniversary of the Russian capital. This international garden festival is a paradise for the admirers of landscape design and all things green and blooming. Both recognised and up-and-coming landscape designers present their works and compete for the main prize, awarded by an international jury. And visitors get a chance to release their inner flower child.
Dates: 29 June–8 July 2018
Taste of Moscow
This international food festival has been around for a long time, covering 19 cities of the world and gaining huge popularity in Moscow. The city’s 30 best restaurants will take part in the program this year, offering visitors their most renowned dishes and products. You can treat yourself to delicacies from one of the exclusive menus created specifically for the festival, attend degustations or learn how to cook from a professional chef. The interactive program will also include concerts, masterclasses, pop-up performances and children’s activities.
Dates: 26–29 July 2018
Much loved by both locals and visitors to the city, the annual Park Live rock festival has achieved international status in its six years of existence, treating the fans with performances from world-famous and local rock stars. Hosting Muse in 2015 has been the highlight in the festival’s history, while Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down have also headlined. In 2018 revellers will have a chance to see David Guetta, Gorillaz and Massive Attack at the vibrant Gorky Park in the heart of the city.
Dates: 27–29 July 2018
Afisha Picnic
Moscow’s biggest open-air festival is a summer rave for food and music lovers. Organized by Afisha magazine, it’s been expanding year on year, eventually moving from concert halls and stadiums to the vast Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve , a former royal estate and a Unesco World Heritage Site by the Moscow River. The organisers make sure there’s lots going on, so apart from multiple music stages you can find food stalls with local products, a designers’ market, gaming and lecture areas – all with a strict no-alcohol policy.
Dates: 4 August 2018

Times and Epochs
The ultimate historical festival in Russia expands with each passing year, taking over Moscow parks, recreational areas and some of the main streets. It brings together the best from the world of historical re-enactment, boasting more than 6000 geeky participants in 2017 (many of them from abroad). Soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, musicians all walk the streets in traditional costumes, performing or teaching the arts, crafts and games of the past. Best of all, the festival is focused on getting the audience involved in the lifestyles of different eras, from the Stone Age to the Soviet times.
Dates: 10–22 August 2018
Moscow City Day
Moscow turned 870 in 2017, and to celebrate the occasion, the city administration decided to host a 10-day festival under the slogan ‘Moscow is a city where history is being made’. With Russian avant-garde the main theme, dozens of events, lectures, performances and street markets celebrated the history of the capital as well as its prominent inhabitants. Plenty of music, food and modern art is always to be expected on the city streets during this time. Don’t miss the magnificent fireworks.
Dates: 1–10 September 2018

Coachella is here: What to bring and how to prepare to make the most of music festivals
Coachella starts this weekend and it's the start of a very hot music festival season. These live events are great opportunities to make new friends and build a community, but there are a few things folks should know and keep in mind to keep themselves safe so they can have the most amount of fun possible.
"[Festivals] can be great experiences with your friends," said Erinn Robinson, the director of communication of the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, RAINN. "But it's really important to balance that with safety so that everybody can have a good time."
Things can easily go awry when you aren't prepared or fully know what you're getting yourself into. These festivals are all day events, sometimes longer, and Robinson said it's important to listen to your body and make sure you're giving it what it needs so you can enjoy the experience as much as possible.
"The number one safety tip is to be in your body," said Robinson. "Be aware of how you are feeling and that really starts with and making sure that you are eating [and] making sure that you are hydrated."
Robinson recommends bringing snacks, a refillable water bottle and electrolyte packs, like ones from Liquid IV or other brands.
And she suggests creating a meeting spot in case phones aren't working and people get separated from their group.
Here are some more tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time at festivals this year.
Festivals you shouldn't miss: From music to food to film, readers say these are the best festivals in the nation
What should you bring?
Emma Kapotes , an online creator whose content focuses on raves and festivals, said the number one thing she brings is her hydration pack, which is essentially like a water bottle but in a bag form. Her other festival essential is an external battery.
Earbuds or headphones that block out sound are another essential folks should pack to protect their ears, according to the University of Texas Health Austin.
"If you know you are going to be exposed to loud noise, or noise for a prolonged amount of time, you should wear hearing protection to prevent hearing loss," states a blog post from the university .
This is because how loud these events can get. A safe sound is considered to be anything under 80 decibels, dB, but music festivals range from 90 to 100 dB.
Some of the other everyday essential Kapotes brings are:
Drugs at the festival
Folks should never feel pressured or forced into doing drugs they wouldn't normally take just because they're at a festival. Kapotes says a big misonception about music festivals is that everyone goes there just to get high and that isn't the case for many people. People go to enjoy the music completely sober.
However, those who do choose to partake need to take some extra precautions.
- Test the substances: People need to know what they're taking to make sure the substances aren't laced with anything unknown, like fentanyl.
- Tell your friends: Both Kapotes and Robinson also advise letting someone in the group know what you're taking or planning to take. It can also be written down on a piece of paper and kept in a pocket in case folks are separated from friends who know what they took. So if there is a medical emergency, a paramedic will have a better understanding on how to deal with the situation.
- Assign a sitter: Kapotes says having at least one trip sitter, a sober person who looks after others while they trip on drugs, is also important in case something does go wrong. "I've been in scenarios too, where I've been the sober individual and had to deal with medical emergencies," said Kapotes. "Thankfully [I] was in the right frame of mind to deal with that."
Sexual assault or harassment at the festival
It's important for people at festivals to be mindful of what is going on around them. Robinson says that while people can build communities and make friends in these spaces, people can still be harassed.
She says the harassment at these events could potentially range from inappropriate comments and physical contact to physical assaults.
She recommends people first check in with themselves and says that if they're with a group of people or a person that makes them feel unsafe, then their first priority should be to get away and remove themselves from the situation.
"That way you can you can get to a place where you can process what's happened and decide what you want to do," said Robinson.
Robinson advises folks who feel comfortable to look for crowd control, who are "hired by festivals to go through the crowd, keep an eye on people for either overdoses or other things that may be happening and keep everybody safe."
People can also go to a medic tent.
Should bystanders step in if they see someone getting harassed at a festival?
Robinson said those who feel comfortable with stepping in to stop someone from being harassed should do it. But first, they should use the CARE Method.
- Create a distraction - Distract the individual who is harassing another person
- Ask Directly - Ask the person at risk what they need. RAINN's website recommends asking the following: “Do you need help?”, “Would you like me to stay with you?” or “Would you like to get out of here and go somewhere safe?”
- Rally others - Ask others to help you with the situation
- Extend support - Ask the person if they're ok in the moment. But, Robinson states the gravity of a situation may not truly hit someone until later. So she recommends checking in on them after the event too depending on the severity.

"Inspired by Pittsburgh’s arts and culture legacy, the name Sudden Little Thrills embodies the ethos of the festival – to be present and open to sudden moments of fun, joy, and inspiration," a festival press release said. "And selecting Hazelwood Green as the festival’s home expands on that philosophy. The 178-acre vibrant hub is redefining Pittsburgh’s riverfront as a beacon of innovation, creativity, and wellbeing. Hazelwood Green is transforming from a historic industrial brownfield site into a sustainable, equitable, and inclusive new model for urban development with community events and programming, an abundance of green spaces, and miles of publicly accessible bike trails."
Festival organizers say they have been working closely with city and community leaders to develop plans for traffic and transportation options to minimize the impact on the surrounding neighborhood. More information will be shared closer to the event.
Sudden Little Thrills is produced by the team behind world-class festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Oceans Calling Festival, Railbird, and more.

10 unmissable LGBTQ+ events in Latin America
Check out Latin America's most exciting annual LGTBQ+ events, from inspirational Pride marches and blockbuster carnivals to queer tango competitions and wine festivals.
A thriving hotspot for LGBTQ+ travel, Latin America’s social calendar is crammed with thrilling queer events. Whether you’re planning a trip around Pride Month celebrations or looking for some cultural enrichment with special-interest festivals, there’s hardly a bad time to visit
1. São Paulo Gay Pride
São Paulo, Brazil June
Every year, travellers in the know head to São Paulo for what is truly the largest gay pride in the world, with millions of attendees. It’s a full-force extravaganza, the one time this usually business-oriented city rivals Rio de Janeiro on the celebratory circuit. The parade’s main route travels the city’s most important thoroughfare, Avenida Paulista, lined with iconic skyscrapers, art nouveau mansions, museums and other cultural institutions. Usually in June, it’s a whole week of events with the accompanying Feira Cultural Da Diversidade LGBT+ featuring art shows, drag contests, restaurant outings and other highlights.
2. Rio de Janeiro Carnival
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil February/March
There’s no experience quite like Rio’s Carnival. Millions turn out for the event, in February or March depending on the Easter calendar — with the weekend and the Monday and Tuesday before the Christian holiday Ash Wednesday and Lent the most bacchanalian days. The event is centred around the Sambadrome, the linear stadium designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, with some tourist packages giving visitors a chance to march in costume. The majority of places are queer-friendly, with the main highlights being the Gay Ball at the Scala club and the Rua Farme de Amoedo gay beach block party in Ipanema.
3. Queer Tango Festival Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires, Argentina Various dates
The tango, a fusion of African, European, New World and Indigenous dance styles, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. It has roots within Argentina’s same-sex history, as men often performed the dance with each other — even if only to impress women watching. After the early 2000s peso crisis, which plunged the country into financial turmoil, LGBTQ+ tango salons began to emerge. Visitors can either join in or sit back and enjoy this quintessential Buenos Aires art form through a queer lens.
4. Vendimia para Todxs (Vendimia for All)
Mendoza, Argentina February/March
With juice-stained, ballgown-wearing beauty queens representing Argentina’s wine regions on parade floats throwing grapes, melons, bottles of wine and other agricultural products into the throngs lining Mendoza’s streets, the Vendimia is already an unusual and vibrant wine festival. The Gay Vendimia or Vendimia for All only adds to the crazy fun, with a beauty queen pageant of gay, trans and drag contestants along with other entertainment. Definitely the world’s largest, if not only, queer wine festival, the event is held in February or March, timed for the country’s annual grape harvest.
5. The Vallarta Pride Parade and Vallarta Pride Festival
Vallarta, Mexico May
Puerto Vallarta is a queer-friendly destination year-round, but this vibrant city overlooking the Pacific really comes alive in late May during the Vallarta Pride Parade and Vallarta Pride Festival. The highlight is the Saturday Parade along the beachfront Malecón, where thousands of people turn up to celebrate the community. Other highlights throughout the week-long gathering include art shows, special dining events, bar parties and more. It’s a popular (albeit more crowded) time to visit this city, which was once the secluded haunt of Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor.
6. Amor Film Festival
Santiago, Chile June/July
Travellers seeking a quiet and cerebral experience can do no better than heading to Santiago, Chile, for the Amor International LGBT+ Film Festival, which was founded in 2016 and is held from late June to early July. Though an international festival, there’s a strong focus on queer Latin American and Iberian submissions in Spanish and Portuguese. The scattered screening and event locations — which range from the Cineteca Nacional to the Teatro Municipal de Maipu and the Comunidad Cultural Comunitaria La Inclusive — offer the chance to catch new films and engage in cinematic conversations while exploring the Chilean capital.
7. Havana, Cuba Gay Pride March and Festival
Havana, Cuba May
Cuba has long been a queer-friendly destination. Through the organisation Cenesex, run by Mariela Castro, daughter of former leader Raul Castro, the communist country has also been an intriguing part of the global LGBTQ+ rights movement, and is especially advanced on transgender issues. Queer rights activists have to toe the party line, and this colourful late May spectacle in the storied streets of Havana is usually a government-supported event, generally promoting an approved narrative. Peaceful protests can sometimes occur, making this a rare, interesting time to see Cuban politics in action.
8. Carnaval Gay de Barranquilla
Barranquilla, Colombia Easter week
Barranquilla, a lesser-frequented spot for LGBTQ+ travellers, is best known for its lively festival. The city, which sits on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is home to one of South America’s largest events — the Barranquilla Carnaval. It features several LGBTQ+ events alongside the core parades, meaning this multifaceted extravaganza is unlikely to remain a secret for too much longer. Like many carnivals, its timing is based on the Easter calendar. The glittering week of events includes marches, cultural outings, parties, drag pageants, and other feather-adorned spectacles where the music is always turned up high.
9. San Juan Gay Pride
San Juan, Puerto Rico June
Puerto Rico has been through a difficult few years, from natural disasters to economic slowdowns, but San Juan Pride continues. This early June event is one of the Caribbean’s largest, with bars, restaurants and nightclubs along Avenida Condado in the Condado neighbourhood’s LGBTQ+ district packed with locals and visitors alike. The parade kicks off early from its staging grounds in Parque del Indio in view of the beachfront before heading along Ashford Avenue with a line-up of participants, floats, music and dancers. It culminates with a rally and show of activists, singers, drag artists and other performances at Parque del Tercer Milenio.
10. Diversity March/ Manuel Antonio Gay Beach Parade
San José, Costa Rica June/July
Visitors who time their trips right and stay long enough during a June visit to Costa Rica get two incredible LGBTQ+ pride events. It’s a chance to see art shows, film exhibits and have plenty of fun. In late June, Costa Rica’s capital San José hosts the Diversity March, a colourful spectacle combining fun and activism, with myriad sophisticated cultural events worthy of this Central American capital. Two weeks later and only a two-hour drive away is the Manuel Antonio Gay Beach Parade in Manuel Antonio National Park, on the beach itself. The weekend is full of pool parties, tea dances and other events.
