I Love Byredo Perfumes—How I Build My Collection Without Spending a Fortune

If there's one thing that all my friends and family know about me, it's that I love a luxury perfume . If they're ever stuck on what to get me for my birthday or Christmas, they know that a fancy fragrance will always put a smile on my face. That being said, certain luxury brands can set you back a small fortune these days, which makes it much more difficult to give your favourite scents a go without bankrupting yourself. Take  Byredo for example. This chic, Stockholm-based brand is one of my go-tos for interesting, expensive-smelling perfumes; but with a 50ml bottle costing a cool £140, it's not feasible to try all the fragrances to see which ones I like the most.

Of course, you can pop into a store to have a sniff of all the different scents, but not only does this mean actually having to find a shop near you that stocks Byredo's entire range, I also find it a little overwhelming once I'm there and end up forgetting which ones I prefer in the first place. Luckily for me, I discovered an easier and more affordable way to get my hands on some of Byredo's best-selling scents, without even having to leave the house. Say hello to the Byredo perfume discovery set .

If you didn't know, you can order perfume discovery sets from the Byredo website and give all of the different scents a go in the comfort of your own home. There are two discovery sets available. The classic discovery set only costs £42 and contains six 2ml vials of Byredo's most iconic fragrances, including Gypsy Water and Blanche. What I love about this set is that you can try all the scents out to see which full-sized perfume you'd like to invest in, and then keep the vials to top up your perfume wherever you are. Not only that, but you can also redeem the cost of the discovery set against any 50ml or 100ml bottle purchased within four weeks of your order.

It doesn't stop there, as the brand has also created a build-your-own travel set that allows you to choose any three perfumes you like in larger 12ml glass vials. Trust me when I say that they are so handy for throwing in your handbag or suitcase when travelling. This is the set I tried, and I opted for Black Saffron, Mojave Ghost and Super Cedar. Each fragrance has been a welcome addition to my perfume collection, and they've even become some of my most-complimented fragrances to date.

My personal favourite has to be Mojave Ghost. This scent features notes of earthy sandalwood, crisp amber and warm cedarwood, creating a perfect everyday fragrance for all year round. Without this set, I wouldn't have discovered my new favourite perfume, so I highly recommend giving it a go.

After trying out the discovery set, I'm going to purchase the full-sized bottle of Mojave Ghost very soon.

This is one of the brand's most popular scents, and is great if you like a clean, fresh fragrance. Expect notes of rose, sandalwood and musk.

That's right, the brand also does a selection of gorgeous candles. I've got my eye on this one for winter as it has a beautifully earthy, warm scent.

Hair perfumes  are another great way of trying out luxury fragrances for less, and Byredo has a wide selection.

Rouge Chaotique is the brand's first oud-gourmand fragrance as part of the Night Veils collection, and with notes of plum, praline and oud, it sounds almost good enough to eat.

Make your shower a whole lot chicer with a Byredo body wash. The packaging alone is enough to make me want to buy this, and I just know that I'll smell amazing all day, especially if I layer on the perfume afterwards. 

Animalique is one of the newest scents from the brand and features fresh, citrusy notes of lemon and bergamot combined with warm suede and amber.

My hands always get so dry in winter, so I'm hoping to get a tube of Byredo hand cream in my stocking this Christmas.

All 3 Scents are so Beautiful

Got this set as I wanted a travel size of Blanche, to be completely impressed by Gypsy Water. All scents smell so clean and fresh. Worth it.

Glad I purchased

Bal D’Afrique is my favourite - it’s sweet but layered enough to be unique and not saccharine. Gypsy Water is my most used - a soft, incense-y scent that is very wearable and doesn’t get old. Blanche smells great but it gives me a headache. Even though I don’t use it I’m still glad I got this set and am curious about trying more Byredo scents.

I adore all 3 of these,they are so unique,but subtle.Beautifully presented.An ideal gift for someone special….but I like them too much to part with!Very difficult to describe,so I will say just take the risk…

This set is a perfect way to be able to test a variety of scents from byredo. The value for money is good too!

gorgeous niche fragrances

I have several Byredo fragrances already, but not the three in this set hence the reason I bought it. In the past, I've never felt compelled or drawn to these but wanted to give them another chance. Bal D'Afrique is gorgeous; it has that unique Byredo DNA which sets it apart, its a clean scent with an underlying muskiness and earthiness and you're constantly drawn to your wrist throughout the day, although it does need topping up as it's quite subtle. Gypsy Water is classy & easy to wear, some days I immediately get the woody pine and sandalwood top notes, other days I get the vanilla more. Blanche is breezy & clean, like freshly washed linen and I like to layer this with woody sandalwood fragrances.

Gorgeous selection

Bought last year but wanted to wait until I’d worn them all before reviewing. First impression was underwhelming and I felt scent didn’t last as long compared to other perfumes in similar price category (le labo, Vilhelm parfumerie etc) BUT after wearing regularly for several months I actually love this set now. Scent is subtle but I do find I notice little wafts of it throughout the day when I wear them. Smell is expensive and feminine without being saccharine. First impression was that Blanche was nicest and Bal D’Afrique least favourite but actually all three complement each other really well and it’s a perfect travel set so I can choose my scent depending on my mood and outfit when I’m away from home. Would definitely recommend

Meet Vowels: The Made-in-Japan Streetwear Brand Opening a Cultural Research Library in Downtown NYC

Located at 76 bowery, the space houses the label’s first alternative-luxury capsule collection along with more than 2,000 books and magazines from creative director yuki yagi’s archival research..

Between the launch of Awake NY’s new performance series with Marshall and the opening of Fugazi’s coffee and clothing store on the corner of Orchard and Canal, New York City’s downtown streets are bubbling over with multi-functional, community-oriented streetwear outposts. Cutting the newest ribbon in the neighborhood, designer Yuki Yagi, founder and creative director of made-in-Japan alternative-luxury label Vowels , is entering the mix with an all-new showroom and research library that includes more than 2,000 books and magazines from the designer’s archival research, curated both independently and with collaborative colleagues and friends.

The space, located at 76 Bowery, is built “for people to come to escape the world and get back in touch with printed matter and a time where things were simpler,” Yagi told Hypebeast. His brand is guided by the Japanese philosophy of Shu Ha Ri (守破離), which states that “one must master the fundamentals of a creative practice before breaking those rules and reconceiving the form.” The Vowels store, set to open to the public on May 15, will exist as a vessel for people to accumulate said knowledge.

‘A Gentleman in Moscow' production designer Victor Molero on creating the show's labyrinthine set [Exclusive Video Interview]

In Amor Towles 's novel "A Gentleman in Moscow," the story's central location, the Metropol Hotel in Moscow, is described as having "rooms behind rooms and doors behind doors." So when it came time to create the elaborate set required for the novel's television adaptation, production designer Victor Molero was given no easy task – especially because finding an appropriate location in northern England, where the show was produced, proved impossible.

"We needed to recreate this location and the timing was tight. So I did the research in 10 days and used another 10 days to design the hotel set," Molero tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. "So it was really stressful. But we did it. I always say that the real Metropol Hotel in Moscow was built in five years. We built the sets for ‘A Gentleman in Moscow' in five months."

Based on Towles's best-selling book, "A Gentleman in Moscow" is about a Russian count (played by Ewan McGregor ) who is sentenced to life under house arrest following the Russian Revolution. That puts the count inside the Metropol Hotel for years and makes the location one of the limited series' main attractions.

"It's really a stereotype to say that the hotel is like another character, but in this case, it is completely like another character," Molero says. "It was really a challenge in a way because the hotel was crucial in telling the story of the count."

Molero built detailed sets for "A Gentleman in Moscow," including the count's bedroom and other areas within the residence. But he says he's perhaps most proud of his work in the hotel's lobby, the bustling open space with one piece of furniture tied directly to the character: a bench

"When I was thinking how to create the lobby in a hotel, it's like a station. People go in and out all the time. And the count is there, he's waiting for something," Molero explains. "So it came to me, that image of the count waiting on that bench for what will happen with his life. And that is an element that I added. You try to play with this element in the space to give a layer to the story and the character."

Molero has received acclaim for his work on the show, but there is one review that stood out to the longtime production designer: a stamp of approval from Towles himself, who came to the set during the first week of production.

"When he arrived and he looked around, to see his face was the most special moment in my career," Molero says. "He was our father in a way, the one that created the whole thing. So it was a really special moment to see his reaction."
