All Mission: Impossible Movies, Ranked By Tomatometer

“Hey, Tom. Paramount here. Yes, the studio. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a new summer franchise out of a 30-year-old TV show, and have it virtually improve with each sequel over 20 years…”

And so Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt has halo-jumped, rock-climbed, motorcycle-duelled, and face mask-revealed his way across dozens of countries to unravel all manner of world threats in the Mission: Impossible movies. He’s had help along the way, featuring a cast of series veterans, like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, and occasional players like Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. Hunt hasn’t had too much help from the IMF, though, considering how many times they think their star employee has gone rogue.

A trademark for most of Mission: Impossible ‘s lifespan was bringing in a new director for each entry, ranging from John Woo to Brad Bird to Brian De Palma, giving each entry a unique spin. But Since Rogue Nation , Cruise (who also produces) has found a perfect collaborator in Christopher McQuarrie. He was the first to direct two M:I s in a row, with Fallout raking in the series’ best box office and critical marks. And McQuarrie is directing the next two films: Dead Reckoning – Part One releases this Friday, with Part Two  out June 28, 2024.

Now streaming on:

Last summer, Tom Cruise was given credit for saving the theatrical experience with the widely beloved “ Top Gun: Maverick .” One of our last true movie stars returns over a year later as the blockbuster experience seems to be fading with high-budget Hollywood endeavors like " The Flash " and " Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny " falling short of expectations. Can he be Hollywood's savior again? I hope so because “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is a ridiculously good time. Once again, director Christopher McQuarrie , Cruise, and their team have crafted a deceptively simple thriller, a film that bounces good, bad, and in-between characters off each other for 163 minutes (an admittedly audacious runtime for a film with “Part One” in the title that somehow doesn’t feel long). Some of the overcooked dialogue about the importance of this particular mission gets repetitive, but then McQuarrie and his team will reveal some stunningly conceived action sequence that makes all the spy-speak tolerable. Hollywood is currently questioning the very state of their industry. Leave it to Ethan Hunt to accept the mission.

While this series essentially rebooted in its fourth chapter, changing tone and style significantly, this seventh film very cleverly ties back to the 1996 Brian De Palma original more than any other, almost as if it's uniting the two halves of the franchise. It’s not an origin story, but it does have the tenor of something like the excellent “Casino Royale” in how it unpacks the very purpose of a beloved character. “Dead Reckoning Part One” is about Ethan Hunt reconciling how he got to this point in his life, and McQuarrie and co-writer Erik Jendresen narratively recall De Palma’s film repeatedly. And with its sweaty, canted close-ups, Fraser Taggart ’s cinematography wants you to remember the first movie—how Ethan Hunt became an agent and the price he’s been paying from the beginning.

It’s not just visual nods. “Dead Reckoning” returns former IMF director Eugene Kittridge ( Henry Czerny ) to Ethan’s life with a new mission. Kittridge informs Hunt that there’s essentially a rogue A.I. in the world that superpowers are battling to control. The A.I. can be manipulated with a key split into two halves. One of those halves is about to be sold on the black market, and so Ethan and his team—including returning characters Luther ( Ving Rhames ) and Benji ( Simon Pegg )—have to not just intercept the key but discern its purpose. The key only matters if IMF can figure out where and how to use it.

After a desert shoot-out that ushers Ilsa Faust ( Rebecca Ferguson ) back into the series, the first major set piece in “Dead Reckoning Part One” takes place in the Dubai airport, where Hunt discovers that there are other players in this espionage chess game, including a familiar face in Gabriel ( Esai Morales ), a morally corrupt mercenary who is one of the reasons that Hunt is an agent in the first place. Gabriel is a chaos agent, someone who not only wants to watch the world burn but hopes the fire inflicts as much pain as possible. In many ways, Gabriel is the inverse of Ethan, whose weakness has been his empathy and personal connections—Gabriel has none of those, and he’s basically working for the A.I., trying to get the key so no one can control it.

At the airport, Ethan also crosses paths with a pickpocket named Grace ( Hayley Atwell ), who gets stuck in the middle of all of this world-changing insanity, along with a few agents trying to hunt down the rogue Ethan and are played by a wonderfully exasperated Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis . A silent assassin, memorably sketched by Pom Klementieff , is also essential to a few action scenes. And Vanessa Kirby returns as the arms dealer White Widow, and, well, if the ensemble has a weakness, it's Kirby's kind of lost performance. She has never quite been able to convey "power player" in these films as she should.

But that doesn't matter because people aren't here for the White Widow's backstory. They want to see Tom Cruise run. The image most people associate with “ Mission: Impossible ” is probably Mr. Cruise stretching those legs and swinging those arms. He does that more than once here, but it seems like the momentum of that image was the artistic force behind this entire film. “Dead Reckoning Part One” prioritizes movement—trains, cars, Ethan’s legs. It’s an action film that's about speed and urgency, something that has been so lost in the era of CGI’s diminished stakes. Runaway trains will always have more inherent visceral power than waves of animated bad guys, and McQuarrie knows how to use it sparingly to make an action film that both feels modern and old-fashioned at the same time. These films don’t over-rely on CGI, ensuring we know that it’s really Mr. Cruise jumping off that motorcycle. When punches connect, bodies fly, and cars crash into each other—we feel it instead of just passively observing it. The action here is so wonderfully choreographed that only “ John Wick: Chapter 4 ” compares for the best in the genre this year.

There’s also something fascinating thematically here about a movie star battling A.I. and questioning the purpose of his job. Blockbusters have been cautionary tech tales for generations but think about the meta aspect of a spy movie in which the world could collapse if the espionage game is overtaken by a sentient computer that stars an actor who has been at the center of controversy regarding his own deepfakes. There’s also a definite edge to the plotting here that plays into the actor’s age in that Ethan is forced to answer questions about what matters to him regarding his very unusual work/life balance, a reflection of what a performer like Cruise must face as he reaches the end of an action movie rope that’s been much longer than anyone could have even optimistically expected. Cruise may or may not intend that reading—although I suspect he does—but it adds another layer to the action.

Of course, the most important thing is this: “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is just incredibly fun. It feels half its length and contains enough memorable action sequences for some entire franchises. Will Cruise save the blockbuster experience again? Maybe. And he might do it again next summer too.

'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' lauded for action-packed drama: 'Impeccably made'

Portrait of Edward Segarra

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" has yet to rocket into theaters, but the film is already shaping up to be a tour-de-force action flick as far as critics are concerned .

The Christopher McQuarrie-directed action thriller starring Tom Cruise , set for a July 12 release, had its global premiere at the Spanish Steps in Rome on Monday. Cruise, looking dapper in an all-blue suit, appeared on the red carpet alongside his "Dead Reckoning" castmates, including co-star Hayley Atwell .

The latest film in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, "Dead Reckoning" follows the adrenaline-pumping stunt shenanigans of Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt as he wards off deadly forces.

So far, the film has earned rave reviews from critics for its stunning action sequences and compelling performances.

Erik Davis of Fandango called "Dead Reckoning" an "impeccably made action film that does not stop entertaining."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

" Each action sequence is long, crazy and intense, " Davis wrote on Twitter. "The story is big and sprawling, but I like how it both felt complete and left you dying for what comes next."

Perri Nemiroff of Collider said the film is "another winner for the franchise," including the addition of "Mission: Impossible" freshman Atwell.

"Tom Cruise is A+ as always and Rebecca Ferguson continues to be a favorite, but franchise newcomer Hayley Atwell wound up being the major standout for me," Nemiroff tweeted . "She can do it all. Action, comedy, a capable hero in many respects while trying to get her sea legs in others."

While Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier commended the film's action, he also noted how "Dead Reckoning" incorporates new technology into the film's plot. " With (artificial intelligence) being the villain, this feels like a cautionary tale, " Deckelmeier wrote on Twitter.

Germain Lussier, a senior entertainment reporter at Gizmodo, wrote that the film "gets a little dense at times, but its pace and intensity more than cover that."

" 'Dead Reckoning Part One' is fantastic, " Lussier tweeted. "Huge variety of action and a final set piece that ranks top 2-3 all-time for the franchise."

The Best Mission: Impossible Action Sequences, Ranked

action tom cruise mission impossible

Through the myriad tonal shifts and personnel changes of the Mission: Impossible   films, one element has remained consistent: the power of its self-contained action sequences. Some are distinguished by their intricate disguises, miraculous computer work, and split-second timing; others are noteworthy for what can only be described as the death wish of producer-star Tom Cruise, whose dangerous stunt work and on-set injuries have become as much a part of the series’s promotional lore as in the golden age of Jackie Chan.

With the series’s seventh installment,  Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , in theaters, we revisited the entire series to select the absolute best of its big set pieces so far.

12. Rome car chase, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

Even when a Mission: Impossible movie indulges in what seems like a typical action sequence — in this case, our intrepid hero, Ethan Hunt (Cruise), and his reluctant ally, Grace (Hayley Atwell), leading cops, killers, and spooks on a car chase through the streets and stairways of Rome — the filmmakers will throw in a clever change-up to turn a familiar situation into something new. Here, they give us two: Grace is a thief, not a stunt driver, so she’s a lot more dangerous behind the wheel than Ethan is (his nervous instructions are a comic highlight), and they change vehicles mid-scene, from a standard police car to a comically small yellow Fiat, which also creates a striking contrast to the oversize, tanklike Land Rover that’s in hot pursuit. And while the sequence is wisely played mostly for laughs, director Christopher McQuarrie (helming his third M:I picture) uses breathless cutting and camerawork to give it the thrilling, ground-level intensity of similar scenes in Ronin and The Bourne Identity .

11. Paris chase,  Mission: Impossible — Fallout

In the kind of double-twist false identity setup that the M:I series does so well, Mr. Hunt must masquerade as a dangerous international criminal and lead a mission to break  another  dangerous international criminal out of a tightly controlled police motorcade. He’s presented with a plan, which involves a  lot  of casualties, so he comes up with an alternative. McQuarrie uses gliding camerawork and razor-sharp cutting to heighten the excitement of Hunt’s improvisation, which results in a car-and-truck chase down the  very  narrow streets of Paris, followed by some white-knuckle motorcycle work by Cruise; his ride through a roundabout, seemingly sliding within inches of dozens of other vehicles, is truly terrifying.

10. Bridge ambush, Mission: Impossible III

J.J. Abrams’s third installment seems to take genuine pleasure in deflating the achievements of its baroque set pieces — the extraction of Agent Farris (Keri Russell) goes like gangbusters, yet she dies during the getaway, and though Ethan and his team pull one of their most elaborate ruses to kidnap super-villain Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the bad guys manage to steal him right back in this breathtaking sequence. Abrams, meanwhile, puts any questions of his big-screen bona fides to rest, throwing in choppers, explosions, gunplay, void leaps, and a Cruise fast-run that’s exhilaratingly interrupted.

9. Motorcycle chase/beach fight, Mission: Impossible II

John Woo’s 2000 sequel is widely acknowledged as the least successful film in the series, and it’s hard not to agree — the pacing is choppy, the villain is weak, and there’s a sense, in some of the action scenes, that Woo is just going through the two-gun motions (though, to be fair, they’re still pretty entertaining). But his climactic action sequence is energetically bonkers, tossing aside all precepts of logic and physics in pursuit of a cool visual, and there are plenty of them: Hunt shoots a guy off of a flying motorcycle, rides away from flames in slow motion, and executes a move where he pulls a front wheelie, spins around, shoots a pursuing car’s gas tank, and flips it. Even better, his pursuit of villain Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) culminates in an honest-to-God motorcycle joust , in which each man leaps from his bike in midair (leaving the bikes to crash into each other and, obviously, explode) so they can engage in a fierce bout of hand-to-hand combat on a conveniently handy beach. To be clear, it’s ridiculous . But it’s a lot of fun.

8. Underwater chip exchange, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation

The best of the IMF operation sequences tend to follow a particular pattern. First, we marvel at the clockwork efficiency of the team’s planning and execution, as everything seems to fall into place. Then, we share in their horror as it all goes down the tubes, thanks to an unexpected complication or the failure of a piece of technology. And then we can gasp at the cleverness with which they improvise their way out of it. That’s certainly the construction of this tip-top sequence in 2015’s Rogue Nation , in which Benji (Simon Pegg) attempts to infiltrate a high-security computer lab as Ethan and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) perform a complicated swap-out maneuver in an underwater computer facility (sure, that’s a thing) that will enable Benji’s entrance. And then — well, as Ilsa puts it, “No no no no no no no.” Cruise reportedly held his breath for six full minutes during the shooting of the scene, and that’s the kind of wide-eyed promotional tidbit that, if it’s not true, should be.

7. Kremlin infiltration, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol

The mission is simple: retrieve a file from an archive room. The (to put it mildly) highly secure location is what makes it impossible. The setup recalls the Langley heist in the first Mission: Impossible (see below), and Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird certainly seems to have studied the earlier sequence, borrowing its patient approach and risky but wildly effective decision to forgo musical underscoring. The central device, a projection screen that hides Hunt and Benji from the eyes of the archive’s security guard, is jaw-dropping in its ingenuity — and the source of a huge laugh, when Benji’s big ol’ face unexpectedly splashes across the screen. Pegg’s presence is the primary addition here, and it’s a good one; Benji’s nerves, and his enthusiasm about working with Hunt (“It’s a bit of a dream for me!”) adds a welcome bit of human interest and comic relief to the sequence.

6. Vatican extraction, Mission: Impossible III

Swiping arms dealer Owen Davian isn’t an easy job — he’s rarely seen in public, and never without his security detail — so Ethan and the IMF team determine their one shot will come during a benefit at the Vatican. This requires the team to sneak in surreptitiously (or, in the case of Maggie Q, glide in with all eyes on her), make a mask of Davian’s face, and knock him out in the bathroom so Ethan can replace him. There’s much to love about this one: the way Ethan repels in, arms out, a la the Langley heist; the tick-tock precision of their arrivals and disguises; the logistical details (for the first time, we see how they make those magnificent masks). But the cherry on top is the deadpan exchange between Ethan and Luther (Ving Rhames) at its conclusion: “What’s up?” “Nothin’. What’s up with you?” “Nothin’.” All in a day’s work.

5. Train climax, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

As you can guess from the title, Dead Reckoning Part One is a “to be continued” situation, so one can only imagine the glee with which McQuarrie and his team crafted a literal cliffhanger for the climax. It’s a killer set piece even before that, and also feels like a mulligan for the dud train climax of the first film (a movie that Dead Reckoning seems especially connected to, as seen in the return of Henry Czerny’s Kittridge). That sequence, criminal considering the eventual direction of the franchise, looks laughably fake, sunk by not-ready-for-prime-time CGI; this one, to put it mildly, does not look fake . Cruise, making like McQueen in The Great Escape , rides a motorcycle off a mountain so he can parachute across a valley onto a moving train, making his entrance with the split-second timing of a great silent comedian; the top-of-the-train fistfight that follows feels genuinely scary. But that’s all just a warm-up for the agonizingly drawn-out cliffhanger, which is just one damn crazy thing after another, an expert filmmaker both thrilling us and winking at us all at once.

4. Vienna Opera House, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation

McQuarrie pays elegant homage to Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much with this marvelous mid-movie sequence, in which Hunt and Benji attempt to foil the assassination of a head of state, a mission complicated considerably by Ilsa, whose motivations and allegiances are still unclear. Cruise leaps across ropes and fights in catwalks, Ferguson dominates some of the sexiest images of the franchise, and Pegg again provides ample comic relief from the lighting booth, and while some of the most memorable Mission sequences make artful use of silence, McQuarrie masterfully orchestrates the events to the music onstage (Puccini’s “Turandot”) to give the scene a properly operatic feel.

3. Kashmir climax,  Mission: Impossible — Fallout

The top picks here may be more elegant or more daring, but nothing has yet topped the sheer  holy shit they’re doing THAT  quality of the sixth film’s closing stretch, which includes a helicopter chase, mountain climbing, and not one but two ticking bombs. It’s the series’s most delightfully over-the-top set piece to date, and the sheer relentlessness of the sequence, the manner in which McQuarrie cheerfully keeps piling on complications, stretching out time, and turning the entire situation upside down, becomes an act of sly self-awareness. They know what we’re expecting out of the franchise by now, and they’ll be damned if they’re not going to give us our money’s worth.

2. Langley heist, Mission: Impossible

“Relax, Luther,” Ethan says with a smile. “It’s much worse than you think.” And indeed it is — getting to the file they need from CIA headquarters requires voice ID, changing numerical codes, a double electronic key card, and a retinal scan, all to get into a secure room with heightened sound and temperature sensitivity. And so Hunt is lowered in, by rope from an air duct (an homage to the classic ’60s heist picture  Topkapi ), in what’s really the opposite of what we think of as an “action sequence”: There’s no gunplay, no explosions, no fisticuffs, and no pounding score to juice up the excitement. In fact, director Brian De Palma’s decision to play the sequence in total silence makes it  more  involving for the viewer; it’s so quiet, and the stakes are so high, the audience is afraid to make a sound as well. De Palma, playing his audience like a piano (as his hero Alfred Hitchcock used to say), stretches the suspense as far as he can, snaking in to tight close-ups of Ethan’s rope, Jean Reno’s hands, that single bead of sweat — and  then  the rat shows up.

1. Burj Khalifa climb, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The camera circles it lovingly, like the phallic object it most certainly is: the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai skyscraper that stands a mind-boggling 2,722 feet, and the setting for the series’s best single sequence (so far). In order to pull off an elaborate double-deception, the team has to access the building’s server, and as Benji explains, “We can get to it from the outside.” And thus Tom Cruise, one of the biggest stars in the world, goes out the damn window and climbs 11 stories on the outside of the tallest building in the world, using only a pair of climbing gloves (one of which fails almost immediately). In this tight-fisted scene, director Brad Bird has our hero both engaging in a horrifyingly dangerous stunt and racing a ticking clock to their targets’ “door knock” (“The countdown is not helping!” he notes), forced to cut and then kick through glass, finally resorting to running down the building before leaping into an open window . Full disclosure: this viewer saw Ghost Protocol on a giant IMAX screen, and suffers from a pretty severe case of vertigo, so that might’ve made the experience a bit more vivid. But that caveat aside, the Burj Khalifa (and the fights, shoot-outs, sandstorm, and high-speed running that follow) is everything you want from a Mission: Impossible movie: death-defying stunt work and ingenious improvisation, played with tension, wit, and precision.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Prague embassy mission goes sideways ( Mission: Impossible ); Atrium dive ( Mission: Impossible II ); Berlin extraction, Shanghai skyscraper climb ( Mission: Impossible III ); Moscow jailbreak, Mumbai takedown, robotic parking garage fight ( Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ); Airplane jump, Morocco car/motorcycle chase ( Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ); Halo jump, bathroom fight, Paris rooftop pursuit ( Mission: Impossible – Fallout ); Abu Dhabi airport interception, Venice knife-and-sword fights ( Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ).

  • Goofs While the specifications for the bomb were being revealed, an explosive yield of five megatons was mentioned. This would be impossible since a Plutonium core alone would only be capable of a fission reaction measured in kilotons of TNT. A second or even third stage involving a fusion reaction would be necessary to achieve an explosive yield in the multi-megaton range. This would require fuels such as lithium-6 deuteride and tritium and a much more complex design than what was shown in the movie.

This 2024 Movie Is Repeating Jason Statham's $152 Million Action Hit With 1 Brilliant Twist

"i don't understand why she's famous": blake lively slammed by talk show host for it ends with us interviews, daniel radcliffe returns to fight voldemort again in harry potter & the cursed child movie concept trailer.

  • Thelma stars June Squibb in her first leading role, showcasing her dramatic and humorous range in an unconventional action hero role.
  • Director Josh Margolin received approval from Tom Cruise to use Mission: Impossible footage, adding depth to the comedy.
  • Thelma explores issues faced by older adults with clever humor, confronting mortality without oversimplifying it, earning high praise.

Tom Cruise approved the use of Mission: Impossible footage in Thelma , with director Josh Margolin explaining how he received permission. Thelma stars 94-year-old June Squibb in her first-ever leading role . The 93-year-old character, Thelma Post, seeks revenge and becomes an unlikely action hero after being scammed out of $10,000. Margolin based the character and the story on his own 104-year-old grandmother while having the film explore issues that older adults face in a meaningful and entertaining fashion.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Margolin was asked about the action-comedy's references to the Mission: Impossible franchise via clips and images from the films and of Cruise, and whether Margolin needed to receive permission from the star himself. Margolin explains the process behind including these references and how it impacted Thelma 's production. Read his explanation below:

It came during production. We shot two versions of those scenes, one with Tom on [TVs and newspapers] and then one with like a replaceable green box. It was surprisingly smooth. Nicky Weinstock, who’s a producer on the movie, was at the same agency as him and has some pals in common there. We ended up sending the scene in the script to give him a little context and then a clip of the table read. We got his signoff and then we went to Paramount, which I suspect made things a lot easier there.

The Tom Cruise & Mission Impossible References Are Only A Small Part Of What Makes Thelma Great

A great lead performance, strong themes, & an unconventional action hero add to the experience.

With a 99% critical score and 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes , Thelma proves that it has more to offer than its Cruise and Mission Impossible references. Squibb's hilarious performance in Thelma is enough to make the film a stellar comedy. Margolin shared with THR that Squibb was the only actor he ever wanted for the role, emphasizing that she reminded him of his grandmother who inspired the story, and that Squibb had the perfect dramatic and humorous range needed for the role.

Squibb also currently voices Nostalgia in Inside Out 2, meaning she has two movies in theaters.

In addition to Squibb's standout performance, Thelma has been well-received for how it handles issues that older adults face . The action-comedy genre enables Thelma to explore these issues through clever humor that doesn't talk down to its characters or to viewers. It confronts difficult topics, including mortality, without oversimplifying and without becoming overly bleak, an approach Margolin is able to master by drawing on his real-life experiences with his grandmother.

One upcoming 2024 action movie takes the premise of Jason Statham's $152 million hit The Beekeeper and makes it even better with an ingenious twist.

The Cruise and Mission: Impossible references aren't the main reason Thelma has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, but as one of the most recognizable action stars from one of the most well-known action franchises, they serve a purpose as Thelma becomes an action hero in her own story. Margolin revealed that Squibb did as much as she could and more than what was expected of her when it came to Thelma's stunts , including doing all the scooter driving herself, yet another reason to see Thelma while it plays in theaters and when it becomes available to stream.

Olympics-Tom Cruise leaps into action as Los Angeles takes on Olympic mission

By Rory Carroll

PARIS (Reuters) -Hollywood's top gun Tom Cruise rappelled from the roof of the Stade de France into the Paris Games closing ceremony on Sunday before speeding off with the Olympic flag in a dramatic handover that began the countdown to the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

A beaming Cruise high-fived athletes after making the roughly 160-foot descent and took the flag from LA Mayor Karen Bass, who was accompanied by U.S. gymnast Simone Biles.

Cruise then disappeared beneath the stage before reemerging on a motorcycle with the flag affixed to the back and exited as the crowd at the 80,000-seat stadium roared.

The closing ceremony then transitioned to a prerecorded video of the 62-year-old skydiving down to the Hollywood sign, where a wide shot showed the Olympic rings incorporated into the famous LA landmark.

The flag was then passed from U.S. Olympians past and present as it traversed the city before reaching a beach party, where California-based musical acts the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, and Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performed.

Living up to the stunning success of the Paris Games may seem like mission impossible for LA and the celebrity-rich city will lean on its stars such as leading man Cruise as the Olympic spotlight turns to Southern California.

Cruise was among the many celebrities seen taking in the action at the Paris Games, showing up at gymnastics, swimming and soccer.

What Happened to Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Franchise?

The Big Picture

  • Jack Reacher was a solid film, but the sequel fell short, leading to doubts about a third installment in the franchise.
  • The films offer a different, darker side to Tom Cruise's action hero persona, with more grounded action and violent combat scenes.
  • Despite lukewarm reception, a larger framed actor was cast in the Prime Video series, Reacher , which found success with fans and critics.

In the last couple of decades, Tom Cruise has cemented himself as one of the most prolific and prestigious action movie leads, with major success in the Mission: Impossible franchise, a Top Gun sequel that became a global sensation, and a few beloved one-offs like Minority Report and Edge of Tomorrow . But he does have one franchise which seems to have been left behind: Jack Reacher .

The movie was followed by a sequel, this time reuniting Cruise with The Last Samurai director Edward Zwick . Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was a step-down critically and commercially, a disappointing result after a four-year wait. The sequel was released in 2017, and talks of a third movie gradually quieted down as the years went on and as Cruise focused his efforts on other projects, including action franchises that were better fit for his star persona and high-flying aspirations. When Prime Video debuted the Reacher series, starring Alan Ritchson in the titular role, hopes of Cruise continuing the film franchise dwindled even further. Most fans and critics agree that Ritchson's Reacher is a more faithful, successful adaptation anyway. But what happened to Cruise's franchise?

Jack Reacher

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.

'Jack Reacher' Solidified the Partnership Between Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise

McQuarrie and Cruise have been creatively inseparable since they first worked together on Valkyrie . McQuarrie was pivotal in retooling Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol into the major success that it was, and has gone on to bring that franchise to unbelievable heights (literally) while also writing and producing nearly everything Cruise has done since 2008.

But the first movie McQuarrie actually directed for Cruise was Jack Reacher . This first installment follows Reacher being pulled into the criminal investigation and defense of a military sniper who may have perpetrated a mass shooting, eventually finding a much larger conspiracy at play. McQuarrie did not stay on as director for the sequel , but he still maintained a production credit on the film. The McQuarrie-Cruise partnership found Cruise in a period of success unlike anything he'd seen before in terms of box-office draw and pure star power. Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Top Gun: Maverick were both record-breaking successes for him at the time, and both films had significant involvement from McQuarrie.

Jack Reacher was not the origin of their partnership, as they did work together on projects prior to these movies, but it was the first time that McQuarrie really proved that he had the vision and filmmaking talent to manage Cruise's stardom and bring out the best in him.

'Jack Reacher' Distinguished Itself From Tom Cruise's Other Action Roles

The Jack Reacher movies are not often a central point of reference for what Cruise can do as an action hero, but they do offer a different version of Cruise. It would be easy for this team to essentially re-skin Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt character into a different world and put little effort into distinguishing the character of Reacher. This is not the route they take, as these films are tonally and stylistically different, and Cruise does put in the work to make sure that Reacher doesn't feel like a carbon copy of Ethan Hunt, Maverick, or any of his other iconic roles.

The Jack Reacher series offered Cruise a chance to play a little darker, as these films do not maintain the playful tone of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Reacher is a more world-weary, dejected character. The films feel more violent, with the combat being depicted in a fashion which is more brutal than Cruise's typical register.

I Don't Think You Understand How Big Jack Reacher Actually Is

Lee Child's books are a reminder that the bad guys are dealing with an absolute unit.

The tonal difference, and the reliance on more low-stakes and grounded action compared to the massive setpieces Cruise usually dazzles with, stand to make Jack Reacher worth watching, and the story, at least for the first film, is quite gripping. The villain, for example, was portrayed in a brilliantly wicked performance by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog . You also get a great performance from Rosamund Pike as a defense attorney who is unwittingly roped into the plot. With a crew of talented actors working under the guidance of McQuarrie, a gifted action filmmaker, it is hard to go wrong with the first Jack Reacher film.

Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Movies Didn't Leave a Lasting Impression

Jack Reacher was positively reviewed, and grossed $218 million on a $60 million budget . The film made enough of an impression to garner a sequel to begin with, but at a similar budget, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back 's box office intake came in around $160 million . Between the two movies, the series grossed nearly $400 million, and yet neither of these movies tend to come up in the mix of Cruise's most iconic, entertaining, or memorable characters.

Although Cruise does put in the work to make Reacher feel distinctive from Maverick, Ethan Hunt, and any other action heroes he's played throughout his career, the stylistic similarities between Reacher and many other action films, both with or without Cruise, might have kept these movies from standing out in a big way. There are not as many of the large-scale stunts which Cruise has become known for doing in the Mission: Impossible movies. The action is more contained and grounded, which might not be a selling point in an era where hyper-stylized movies like John Wick and its sequels have become the prevailing trend in Hollywood action.

The first movie was a hit and the second was a moderate success, but Cruise's Jack Reacher seemed to fall by the wayside as both he, McQuarrie, fans, and critics seemed to care more about the Mission: Impossible sequels. Prioritizing that franchise seems to have worked out for the best, as Jack Reacher is growing into a strong franchise in a different medium.

What Happened After 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back?'

Despite the first movie going over relatively well, it was not received as warmly by longtime fans of the book series. Some fans took issue with Cruise feeling miscast for the 6'5" tank of a man that Reacher was consistently written as . Child spoke of this around the release of the first film, explaining that "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way." This speaks to the strength of Cruise's action movie prowess, his ability to sell you on the notion that he really can do anything, but for some fans, it still wasn't enough.

The first film was based on the ninth Reacher novel, One Shot , which was published in 2005. The two follow a similar story, with Jack Reacher remaining relatively faithful to the overall plot of the book. However, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back adapted the 18th Reacher novel, Never Go Back , which was published in 2013. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back maintains many of the same overarching plot beats as the book, but deviates in that Child's novel is a direct follow-up to a different story in the series that was never touched on in the film adaptations. Overall, the movies are narratively tied to their source material, but Cruise's differing characterization of Reacher is a hurdle that many fans were never able to overcome .

Child did eventually relent, agreeing that Reacher should be played by a larger framed actor, and their wishes were fulfilled when Ritchson stepped into the role for the Prime Video series, Reacher . The series adaptation has been a hit with fans and critics, and a third season is currently in the works . The success of the Ritchson-led series, which McQuarrie is an executive producer on, seems to have filled in the gaps that fans and critics noted in the film adaptation. When the second film was relatively much less successful, these issues were harder to look past for many Reacher fans. The television series fulfilled what the fan base wanted out of that story adapted to the screen, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back remains one of the few unfortunate misfires in Cruise's impressive action resume.

Will There Be a Third Jack Reacher Movie With Tom Cruise?

While McQuarrie spoke about what continuing the franchise with Cruise could look like, it seems to have landed fairly low on their list of priorities. This is not surprising considering McQuarrie and Cruise are in the midst of what may be the final stretch of the Mission: Impossible franchise while also juggling how they might move forward with Maverick after the massive global sensation that was the Top Gun sequel.

Recently, it was announced that he will star in the upcoming Alejandro G. Iñárritu film , his first non-franchise role in years. He has also been circling a mysterious project with Doug Liman that may take him to outer space , and in addition to that, Edge of Tomorrow sequel talks are always happening . Taking all of this into consideration, Cruise may have a busy schedule these next few years, and with the lukewarm response to his outing as Reacher, it feels less likely that he'd return to this character for a third film. So the Cruise-era Reacher fans may have to settle for nothing more than a double feature, but at least there will be no shortage of Tom Cruise or Jack Reacher gracing our screens in the next few years , just not as one entity.

Jack Reacher is available to watch on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Tom Cruise made a hasty departure from London on Monday, leaving the city in his personal helicopter. The actor’s abrupt exit comes as his estranged daughter, Suri, embarks on a new chapter of her life.

The 18-year-old, who is making heads turn with her style statements, has enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University and chosen to distance herself from the public eye by dropping the famous Cruise surname. The pair haven't been seen together publicly in over a decade.

Page Six, citing unnamed sources, has reported that Cruise has had minimal involvement in Suri's life, absent from key moments like her prom and recent public attention on her relationship with high school sweetheart. While the action star buzzed through London skies, likely focused on his next "Mission Impossible" instalment, ex-wife Katie Holmes was spotted returning after dropping her little kiddo to the college.

Fresh off a week-long Mediterranean getaway following his show-stopping performance at the Paris Olympics, the 62-year-old action star was spotted at Battersea Heliport in typical Cruise fashion by Page Six. Sporting a casual look of a white golf shirt, black jeans, and white sneakers, topped off with a black cap and sunglasses he exuded his signature cool vibes.

Cruise and Holmes went their separate ways in 2012 after being together for six years. After they split up, the All We Had actress got out of Cruise's life and also cut ties with the Church of Scientology, which the actor continues to be deeply involved with. As part of their divorce agreement, the Hollywood A-lister committed to paying Holmes $400,000 annually until Suri turned 18 and agreed to cover her college expenses.

Following in the trend of other celebrity offspring like Brad Pitt's children, Suri Cruise has decided to distance herself from her famous father. The 18-year-old adopted her mother Katie Holmes' middle name, Noelle, before enlisting in college.

While Cruise has mostly supported her financially, Suri is said not to be very close to her father, unlike her relationship with her mother. Holmes, who will undoubtedly miss her daughter, expressed immense pride in Suri's accomplishments in a recent interview with Town & Country.

Survivor host Jeff Probst reacts to epic Tom Cruise Olympic flag delivery (exclusive)

"Man, I'm no Tom Cruise."

California Dreams was better than Saved by the Bell. There, I said it.

action tom cruise mission impossible

A seemingly ageless star of an adventure franchise dramatically delivers a precious item from overseas to Los Angeles via motorcycle, airplane, and skydiving. Tom Cruise at the Olympics? Absolutely not! We’re talking about Jeff Probst on Survivor!

Yes, Cruise’s epic Olympic flag delivery brought to mind many of the actor’s jaw-dropping action sequences as Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible films. But it also had Survivor fans feeling a profound sense of Déjà vu. That’s because Probst used to do pretty much the exact same thing with the urn containing the votes from final Tribal Council, delivering them by all means of dramatic (and sometimes comedic) transportation from the farthest reaches of the earth to back here in the United States for a live reading and reunion show.

The Survivor host and showrunner first made his dramatic vote-delivery mark back in 2002 at the end of the Survivor: Marquesas season, jumping in a helicopter, flying to New York City, hailing a cab, and then arriving in Central Park with the votes. (Enjoy that first somewhat tame stab at over-the-top drama below.)

That was followed a year later by the far grander entrance for S urvivor: The Amazon , when Probst hopped on a jet ski and miraculously jet skied all the way from Brazil to New York City, pausing to pay tribute to the Statue of Liberty… as one does. He then hilariously hopped on the subway — just barely squeezing through the closing doors — taking the train to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway for the final vote reading. (Feast your eyes below.)

However, the true piece de resistance took place at the conclusion of the Survivor: Vanuatu season in 2004, when Probst bushwacked through a jungle Indiana Jones-style before coming across a small prop plane that somehow had enough gas to take him all the way to the California desert. At that point, Probst jumped out of the plane and skydived down to a waiting motorcycle, which he then hopped on and drove all the way to CBS Studios in Los Angeles. (This must-watch adventure can be seen below.)

So when Cruise employed the same skydiving and motorcycle combination from Paris to Hollywood, Survivor fans could not help but take notice. And neither could friends of Probst, who immediately started texted the Hostmaster General about it, leading him to ponder a chicken and the egg scenario. “I think the question with the Tom Cruise ending ceremony bit is: Did Tom Cruise steal from Survivor , or did Survivor steal from Mission: Impossible? ” wonders Probst.

“Because I really loved watching him do that,” he continues. “And it did make me realize: Man, I'm no Tom Cruise. That dude jumped on his motorcycle and rode through the streets, and then jumped out of a helicopter. I'm surprised he didn't catch a bad guy in the progress! That was super fun.”

And it was super fun for Survivor fans to harken back to a time when the host also did such gloriously ridiculous stunts to deliver the final Tribal Council votes. “I did love the comparisons,” Probst admits. “I had a lot of people text me and say, ‘Probst, Tom Cruise is doing a Survivor! Tom Cruise is doing his version of bringing the votes back from the island!’ And the first question I had was: Wait a minute, is he imitating me or have I been imitating him all these years?”

Entertainment Weekly has been bugging Probst for years to bring back his Mission: Impossible style vote delivery. In 2014, the host revealed to EW that they had actually started filming a vote delivery that involved him skateboarding the votes to the reunion show, but when it came to a skateboarding trick he was supposed to perform as part of the bit, he realized, “I can't do this! So we never aired it, and that was the last one."

When asked about it again during the Winners at War season in 2020, Probst once again recounted the skateboarding snafu (which can be watched in the video at the top of the article), and also explained the reason they no longer happen. "It was fun to do it. We did it several times. And we always had a very fun, tongue-in-cheek way of doing it. But I don't want to repeat. We don't want to do it just to do it and waste time out of our finale, which is already so packed there's no time for the reunion show. So I just still don't have a great idea.”

With Survivor having shifted to a pre-taped after-show filmed on location in Fiji and no longer even staging a live vote reading or reunion , there is no current cause for Probst to deliver the votes in epic, dramatic fashion. But should they ever return to the live format — say, for the highly anticipated season 50 that will air in 2026 — would the host consider bringing back his action-packed transportation hop now that Tom Cruise has raised the stakes with a full stadium abseil? “Put it in the hopper,” Probst says in terms of considering it. “But no promises.”

It sounds like Survivor fans’ own mission impossible to get their favorite host back on a jet ski continues.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's daughter Suri embarks on university life as she moves into dorm

  • 21:44, 19 Aug 2024

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's daughter Suri Cruise has taken the leap into university life with the teen settling into her dorm.

The 18-year-old newbie was seen getting comfy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a bit of assistance from her 45-year-old 'Dawson's Creek' star mum, Katie. While Suri is settling into campus life, her 62-year-old Hollywood megastar father is caught up filming the action-packed 'Mission: Impossible 8', fresh off his stunt-filled finale for the Olympic Games in Paris just the previous week.

An insider disclosed to MailOnline, which shared snaps of Suri and her mum during the move-in: "Suri wants the full college experience so she is giving the dorm rooms a try and she will have a roommate. She is excited for a new chapter in her life."

This dorm adventure is a far cry from the plush three-bed high-rise digs Suri used to call home alongside her mother. According to The Mail, the largest dorm on the Carnegie grounds is Donner House, geared towards first-year students. Comprising four floors, it hosts approximately 250 freshers.

Then there's also Scobell House, a smaller, women-only residence that houses no more than 88 young academics. Despite some spartan living conditions, the university boasts numerous eateries and a wellness hub. Following in showbiz footsteps, Suri featured on 'Blue Moon' during the titles of Katie's 2022 movie 'Alone Together', with her mum expressing hopes for her to carve out a career in entertainment.

The actress opened up to Glamour magazine, revealing her close ties with production teams: "I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her... you have these projects and you become a family with people." She described the working environment as, "And it's this safe, beautiful, creative space."

She voiced concerns recently about reviving 'Dawson's Creek' in the modern era fearing it could "tarnish" the legacy of the show. Famous for her role as Joey Potter in the iconic Massachusetts-based teen drama from 1998 to 2003, she acknowledged ongoing discussions over the years about a potential comeback of the beloved series.

During the Kering Women in Motion talks at the Cannes Film Festival, Katie expressed her nostalgia, saying: "The show was a time capsule. To put it into today's world might tarnish it a little bit."
