15 Best Places to Visit in Maldives

Left to the mercy of the soft and lapping Indian Ocean, the islands of the Maldives have been sculpted and formed into unquestionably one of the most quintessentially beautiful tropical places on the globe.

Ranging from the powdered beaches of the northern atolls to the earthy sea shacks and fishing hamlets of the southern isles, the whole nation can be found strewn across the turquoise waters some way from the Indian subcontinent.

Most visitors will land in the throbbing, pulsing city of Male, packed onto its own pinprick of an isle and boasting spice-scented markets and great mosques.

Most also don’t linger long before they hit the seaplanes or boats and make for the shimmering private bays of their chosen resort, where infinity pools and over-water cabanas are the norm.

More recently, new local guesthouses and the discovery of rolling waves have begun transforming the Maldives from honeymoon hotspot to surfing, adventure and backpacking destination – paradise is now open to all, it seems.

Lets explore the best places to visit in the Maldives :

Islamic Centre

Thrumming with scooters and cars and Indian bazaars stacked with coconuts and spice, the city of Male – the capital of the Maldives atolls – has the frenetic feel of a place crammed into a slot that’s too small for it.

And that’s because it is.

Although rarely visited (most travelers bypass the city on seaplanes heading straight for their resort), the town is crammed onto a pint-sized islet in the North Male Atoll.

It manages to fit some fascinating sights between its streets though, like the 17th-century Friday Mosque and the gold-tipped Islamic Centre.

Male Market is another must – just be sure get your haggling skills up to scratch.

2. Hulhumale Island

Hulhumale Island

Sat just across the sparkling waters from the capital of Male, the island of Hulhumale is forever growing and growing as more and more land is reclaimed to house the sprawling urban tendrils of the city.

It’s also the home of the Velana International Airport, which is the main gateway to these paradisiacal islands for most.

However, don’t be put off by how all that sounds – Hulhumale is actually a charming place.

It’s got a gorgeous – if artificial – beach on its eastern haunch, a clutch of leafy neighborhoods, a glass-topped mosque, and planned promenade walkways above the Indian Ocean.

3. Maafushi

Maafushi

Maafushi might not have the sprawling luxury resorts and opulent 5-star hotels that many of its nearby brothers do, but it’s got plenty of charm.

Sadly ravaged in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the place has been busy rebuilding its salt-washed fishing jetties and industrious sailor huts in the last decade.

Something that’s helped is the opening up of rights to local guesthouses, which is transforming Maafushi into one of the top off-beat island getaways for budget travelers.

Of course, you can expect gorgeous beaches backed with palms, lapping waves, and a clutch of homey little coffee shops on the shore.

Utheemu

Sat on the far northern reaches of the Haa Alif Atoll, itself the northernmost of all the Maldivian island chains, the beautiful site of Utheemu holds a special place in the history of this archipelago nation.

That’s because it was once the home of the revered Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu – the leader who’s credited with driving out Portuguese invaders from the isles in the late 16th century.

Of course, there are the usual sparkling white sands and lapping Indian Ocean waves, but these are punctuated by heritage sites like the Utheemu Ganduvaru, which is the gorgeous timber-built palace where the respected leader grew up.

Feydhoo

Feydhoo’s story is a curious one.

In the 19th century, the people now living between the leafy streets and tight-knit housing blocks here were the inhabitants of nearby Gan island (more on that one later). When the British came in the run up to WWII, Gan was transformed into an airbase, and the locals were shipped out to live on the next island along in the Seenu Atoll.

That was Feydhoo, which is today a pretty picture of lived-in Maldivian life.

Come and stroll the winding walkways and sample seafood curries with the locals – the welcome is always warm.

6. Maradhoo

Maradhoo

Joined at the hip to aforementioned Feydhoo by a seaside causeway that runs just above the coral-fringed shores of the Seenu Atoll, Maradhoo is a major link in the island chain that starts with Gan to the east.

Long and thin, it juts out into the Indian Ocean like a finger fringed with narrow beachfronts and swaying groves of coconut palms.

As in Feydhoo, the locals are laid-back and lovely, and the cuisine is spicy and rich in seafood.

Be sure to take a walk down Link Road and flit between the coffee shops and sandwich vendors that meet between the palm trees there.

7. Veligandu Island

Veligandu Island

Romantic sunsets glow red and yellow over the lapping waters of the Indian Ocean; cocktails clink in the resort’s luxurious bar; sea kayaks bob on the turquoise shoreline, and crystal-clear waves roll in softly from the inland lagoon.

Welcome to uber-beautiful Veligandu Island, which has long been championed as one of the top destinations in the Maldives for couples.

Honeymooners and newly-weds are a common site on this long, thin finger of land on the western edge of the North Ari Atoll, and there are plenty of opulent seaside villas and suites to match.

8. Banana Reef

Banana Reef

Many travelers heading to the islands of the Maldives will be coming for one thing and one thing only: diving.

And there’s hardly a single better place to don the SCUBA gear and wetsuits in the country than at the Banana Reef.

This fruit-shaped dash of multi-colored corals and seaweed-clad sandbanks lies underwater between the isles of the North Male Atoll.

It’s served by countless outfitters, who lead excursions to uncover the striped snappers and bulbous sponges, the reef sharks and the barracudas that all coalesce here.

9. Thulusdhoo Island

Thulusdhoo Island

It’s the spirit of the salt-washed Caribbean that seems to drive Thulusdhoo Island.

Largely undiscovered, this speck in the Male Atolls is ringed by wide spaces of sand from which bulbous coconut trunks sprout by the hundred.

The beaches are – naturally – great, and the locals love to draw in their fading fishing boats to flint up a good sizzling seafood barbeque now and then.

That all fits perfectly with the other pastime of travelers on Thulusdhoo: surfing.

Look for the fun left-hand rollers that turn into barrels off of Villingilimathi Huraa close by.

10. Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah promises something a little different to the rest of the Maldivian atolls.

For starters, this speck on the map of the Indian Ocean doesn’t really have any near neighbors, and it occupies an atoll all of its own.

It’s also peppered with the occasional inland lake, which is a rare sight to see in this flat-lying country.

Meanwhile the sandbanks that ring popular Banging Beach make for some crashing rollers and refreshing salt-spray (a break from the usual relaxing lapping lagoons), and the proximity to the Earth’s equator means steamy weather throughout the year.

11. Alimatha Island

Alimatha Island

Perched on the eastern edge of the Maldives, in the famous Felidhe Atoll, Alimatha is a great tourist island that offers luxury cabanas, untouched stretches of pristine sandy beach, and – most importantly – some of the most celebrated SCUBA diving spots around.

The resort that covers the island can often be seen packed with eager divers, who all come to seek out the pretty coral groves and sea walls that surround the shores.

These are packed with jackfish, morays and eels, and are known for their high visibility and popular night diving packages.

12. Hithadhoo

Hithadhoo

Large (at least for a Maldivian island) and highly-populated (again, at least for a Maldivian island), this sub-section of Addu City in the old Seenu Atoll can be reached on the same causeways that connect Gan to Maradhoo.

On its southern edge, the place is given away to mangroves and marshes and shrub land, while the north side of the island is packed with cafes and bakeries and the occasional set of looming minarets that rise from the local mosques.

More than anything, Hithadhoo oozes a charming lived-in vibe; one that’s difficult to discover elsewhere in the resort-heavy country.

Kuredu

Kuredu is the self-proclaimed jewel of the Lhaviyani Atoll, which makes its home in the central-north reaches of the Maldivian archipelago.

A boomerang-shaped isle, it’s entirely covered by a single resort, which offers rustic bamboo shacks and rows of those ubiquitous over-water bungalows with verandahs above the waves.

The whole place is completely surrounded by its own private fringing of powdery sand, and is considered one of the most advanced SCUBA and snorkeling destinations in the country – strong currents and high waves often make it difficult to see the manta rays and tropical schools.

Unusually, Kuredu also plays host to a full 9-hole golf course.

Gan

Gan is primarily known for its airport, which is the second-largest airport in the entire Maldives and a famous former airbase for the British Royal Air Force during WWII. Today, the island has shed its old military importance in favor of tourism, and it’s slowly rising to become one of the most popular spots in the Addu Atoll.

It’s not just the accessibility (thanks to the airport) that draws the crowds either, because Gan has earthy little fishing restaurants and small stretches of shimmering sand that are usually totally empty of visitors. Nice.

15. Kunfunadhoo Island

Kunfunadhoo Island

If you’re after the fabled luxury and romance of the Maldives, then it’s likely that the opulent resort on Kunfunadhoo Island won’t disappoint – it’s continually hailed as the most indulgent place to stay in the country.

Visitors enter through a thatched timber great hall that hides between groves of coconut palms.

From there, it’s onto the cocktail decks that soar on stilts above the jungle, or out to the beaches where candles flicker in the sultry sea breeze.

Add in a couple of infinity pools, swim-up bars, and the chance to dine on a private little sandbank with only the Indian Ocean waves as a backing track, and it’s easy to see why this one’s so popular!

11 Epic Things to Do in the Maldives

Maldives Beaches Maldives Beaches free

Many vacationers head to the Maldives solely to relax on the beach – and for good reason. The sugar white sand and striking turquoise water – practically unmatched in its clarity anywhere in the Caribbean – make for the perfect beach vacation backdrop. Every resort island has at least one beach with lounge chairs or salas to relax on. Most also have a "house reef" where you can cool off and admire the marine life.

Some resorts that boast notably beautiful beaches include:

Go scuba diving and snorkeling Go scuba diving and snorkeling

With exceptionally clear visibility of up to 131 feet, an average sea temperature of 85.5 degrees Fahrenheit, bucket-list opportunities to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, and an abundance of marine life, the Maldives makes for a great environment for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Many resorts feature a house reef (a coral reef easily accessible from shore), while most also offer snorkeling excursions where a boat and tour operator transport you to even more vibrant reefs around the atoll. Most resorts and many inhabited islands have a dive center, so beginner and seasoned scuba divers alike can enjoy dive trips to the most stunning "giris" (shallow submerged reefs), drop-offs, "thilas" (pinnacles), channels, caves and shipwrecks around the area. With typically a medium to strong current, most dives in the Maldives are drift dives from boats.

Try must-do water sports Try must-do water sports

Your trip to the Maldives would be incomplete if you didn't explore the glassy waters of the Indian Ocean or stick your head beneath the surface to check out the colorful world below. After all, the official territory of the Maldives is 99% water and 1% land, so if you only explore the islands, you're barely scratching the surface.

Snorkeling and diving are the top two activities in the Maldives, with wreck dives, pinnacles, reef walls and channel dives being just some of the options on offer. Swim with dozens of nurse sharks in Fulidhoo, whale sharks at Maamigili and tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah, or check out some of the incredible shipwrecks, such as Kuda Giri. You'll never get bored if you embrace the plethora of water sports available in the Maldives.

Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay

U.S. News Insider Tip: If seeing mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay is on your bucket list, choose a resort in Baa Atoll, such as Anantara Kihavah and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. You'll avoid a lengthy journey and expensive private charter fees. – Sarah Harvey

Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was created in recognition of the incredible biodiversity of the underwater ecosystem, and Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in this atoll's crown. Hanifaru is a monitored snorkeling site that's renowned for attracting exceptionally high numbers of manta rays. During the southwestern monsoon (May to November), huge quantities of zooplankton become trapped in the horseshoe-shaped bay, creating a kind of zooplankton "soup," which in turn attracts remarkable numbers of zooplankton-loving "megafauna." In peak season, there could be as many as 100 mantas, plus maybe even several whale sharks feeding there. Hanifaru is one of the only places in the world where so many mantas and whale sharks aggregate in such unusually high numbers.

Authentic cultural experiences Authentic cultural experiences

U.S. News Insider Tip: Many souvenirs are imported from China. Look for souvenirs that are actually made in the Maldives, including thundu kunaa woven mats, striped feyli sarongs, lacquerwork from Baa Atoll and wooden miniature dhonis (boats). Or, check out Authentic Maldives . – Sarah Harvey

Influenced by sailors, traders and other explorers from India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and even further afield over a period of more than 2,500 years, the Maldives is a melting pot of cultures. Prior to the country's official conversion to Islam in A.D. 1153, the Maldives was Buddhist and Hindu. You can see evidence of the Maldives' fascinating past through a number of authentic cultural experiences.

10 best places to visit in maldives

North Malé Atoll North Malé Atoll free

This atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll, is where you'll find the international airport, the capital city, plenty of popular dive sites, several "guesthouse islands" and more than a dozen resorts. A lot of people incorrectly refer to Velana International Airport as "Male airport" (and confusingly, it even has the airport code "MLE"), but it's actually located on an island called Hulhule, which is adjacent to Malé. Most visitors don't ever set foot in Malé, and are instead whisked from Hulhule straight to their resort or guesthouse. However, while most visitors aren't sad to skip Malé, the atoll named after the country's capital city is an extremely popular spot to visit.

Visitors who don't want to hop on another plane after a long journey to the Maldives often pick resorts or guesthouses in North Malé Atoll because they know it's a quick speedboat ride to their accommodation. The closest resorts to the airport, such as Kurumba and Bandos, are only 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. However, the furthest away islands, which could take from 45 minutes to an hour to reach by speedboat, do have the benefit of not being under flight paths and not having the capital city and other urban developments on the horizon, which guests sometimes complain about. What's more, speedboat transfers are also cheaper than seaplane transfers.

Banana Reef Banana Reef

This vibrant site in North Malé Atoll is popular with divers and snorkelers alike. Its name comes from the curved shape of the reef when seen from above. You can admire a wide variety of marine life, including schools of jacks as well as Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracudas, snapper, groupers, reef sharks and, if you're lucky and it's the right season, maybe even mantas too.

Divers who visited the site recently raved about the excellent visibility and abundance of aquatic life, while snorkelers liked how easy it was to see the reef, as the shallowest parts are at only about 4 feet.

Maafushi Maafushi free

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for an island where you can hang out with other travelers, this one is a great option, although those wanting a more idyllic escape might prefer a less built-up island, such as Fulidhoo or Dhigurah. – Sarah Harvey

Maafushi is the most developed inhabited island in the Maldives when it comes to guesthouse tourism. When guesthouses were first legalized, it was on Maafushi that the first one opened in 2010. Prior to that, it was difficult for visitors to mingle with the average Maldivian and get a sense of what island life was like in the "real" Maldives. Today, Maafushi is home to dozens of guesthouses ranging in size and budget, from simple lodgings to stylish hotels. There are also plenty of cafes, watersports centers and dive centers to keep you entertained.

10 best places to visit in maldives

Hulhumalé Hulhumalé free

Hulhumalé is an entirely artificial island built over a shallow lagoon adjacent to Malé. Construction began in 1997, and the rapidly expanding island is currently well on its way to doubling in size from the original 1.5-square-mile plot. The main purpose of creating Hulhumalé was to provide more housing for the overflowing capital city, and it remains a largely residential island. However, Hulhumalé also attracts travelers thanks to its dozens of guesthouses (which mostly line the long sandy beach), as well as several watersports centers and dive centers, a skate park and its very own Central Park. You will also find a variety of cafes and restaurants, ranging from Maldivian cuisine at The Maldive Kitchen to international options like Korean Food Zone.

The main reason visitors choose to stay in Hulhumalé is because it's close to the airport. If they arrive to the Maldives at night, it means they can't hop on a seaplane (which only operate during day), so Hulhumalé is a handy pit stop for many. While it's quieter and greener than Malé, it is becoming busier every year, and some parts of it are beginning to look in need of repair. However, the beach strip, which most tourists stick to, is fairly well looked after. The second phase of this land reclamation project is newer, and the buildings and streets are in better condition there. It is separated from the rest of the island by a series of bridges over a small channel of water.

10 best places to visit in maldives

Huraa Island Huraa Island free

Huraa is a relaxing, friendly and uncrowded island village best known to tourists for guesthouses, snorkeling and surfing opportunities. There are several surf points in the vicinity, but surfing in the Maldives is best suited to intermediate to advanced-level surfers because all of the breaks are coral breaks. There are souvenir shops, cafes, small grocery shops, two dive centers and a football field, but the white sand beaches fringing the island are probably the biggest draw, along with the unique insights you'll get into how Maldivians really live. Guesthouses on the island can also organize day trips and activities, such as sandbank trips and fishing excursions.

Past travelers love the fact that there are only electric vehicles on the island, but say it's still being developed for tourism. Some were disappointed to find that there is no "bikini beach" anymore (a tourist beach where you can wear a bikini, as it's illegal to wear skimpy swimwear on any island that isn't a resort island). However, many said the island was beautiful and they enjoyed exploring the mangrove area too.

Maldives Victory Maldives Victory

The Maldives Victory, a 262-foot-long cargo ship, sunk in 1981 after hitting a reef in North Malé Atoll . Now, the dive site attracts scuba aficionados thanks to the beautiful corals that have covered it, as well as the rich sea life that has made the wreck a sight to behold, including turtles, trevallies, grouper, batfish, pufferfish and lionfish. For macrolife-lovers, there are also nudibranchs on the stern.

The Maldives Victory rests upright off the coast of Hulhule Island, not too far from the southern end of the Velana International Airport runway. Experts say this site is best seen between late May and July. Recent reviewers recommended a penetration dive so you don't miss the marine life inside the wreck and touted it as one of the most thrilling dive sites in the country.

The Top 11 Things to Do in the Maldives

10 best places to visit in maldives

EXTREME-PHOTOGRAPHER / Getty Images

The Maldives conjures up idyllic images of over-water bungalows and pristine beaches. However, visitors are often surprised to find that there are more things to do in the Maldives than what they expected. There's something for everyone, regardless of whether you prefer an active, or inactive, vacation. This makes the Maldives a very versatile destination! Read on to see what activities are popular.

Go Snorkeling

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

The Maldives is made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. Therefore, the snorkeling is naturally spectacular!  All resorts in the Maldives offer this activity.  However, ideally, you'll want to choose an island with an in-house reef where you can go snorkeling directly from the beach (or your over-water villa!) instead of by a prearranged boat trip.

The quality of the reefs does vary. Angsana Ihuru , in North Male Atoll, is regarded by many to have the best in-house reef in the Maldives and the resort can easily be reached by speedboat from Male. In the same area, Fihalhohi Island Resort is excellent.

Other luxury resorts with outstanding in-house reefs and snorkeling are Diamonds Athuruga , Vilamendhoo Island Resort and Spa , Mirihi Island Resort , and Lily Beach Resort. These are all located in South Ari Atoll. In North Ari Atoll, Kandolhu is excellent. The Park Hyatt Hadahaa and Robinson Club are remote options situated within North Huvadhoo, one of the deepest atolls in the Maldives. If you're on a budget, try Biyadoo Island Resort in South Male Atoll.

Dive to Reefs and Meet Sea Creatures

The Maldives is regarded as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world. You'll be able to get up close and personal with an abundance of sea creatures including turtles, mantra rays, moray eels, and rare whale sharks. Varied reef structures and deep channels provide exciting diving opportunities.

If you're super serious about scuba diving, the best option is to book a liveaboard boat trip. These luxury cruise boats visit some of the most remote reefs and will allow you to explore places beyond the reach of resorts in the Maldives. The optimal time to go scuba diving is from January to April. However, most liveaboards operate from November to May. Top options are Carpe Diem Maldives and Maldive Mosaique.

Banana Reef, in North Male Atoll, was the first Maldives dive site to be discovered and remains very popular. Some islands surrounding it are Farukolhufushi, Fullmoon and Kurumba.

The superb in-house reef at Angsana Ihuru , in North Male Atoll, has its own shipwreck called the Rannamaari.

Ari Atoll (one of the largest atolls in the Maldives) is home to many popular dive sites and most liveaboards visit it. There are also numerous resorts in the area that have dive centers and offer diving excursions. Maaya Thila, in North Ari Atoll, is particularly famous and one of the best spots to swim with sharks. South Male Atoll isn't as developed as North Male Atoll, but the dive sites there are just as good and whale sharks can be found there throughout the year. These resorts all rate well for diving on Tripadvisor.

If you do want to stay at a resort but have access to remote diving sites, COMO Maalifushi is the only resort in pristine Thaa Atoll, with 66 islands and diverse marine life.

Looking for an inexpensive independent dive company? Try Maldives Passions Dive School or Maafushi Dive & Water Sports on inhabited Maafushi Island (the center of the independent travel scene).

Spot Dolphins

The Maldives isn't just known for its snorkeling and scuba diving. It also ranks highly as one of the world's top dolphin destinations. Dolphins are everywhere in the Maldives. They're really friendly and are frequently known to swim up to tourist boats. They may even swim past your over-water villa!

Many resorts in the Maldives offer dolphin watching trips as part of their standard guest experiences. However, sightings aren't guaranteed. To maximize your chances of spotting some, head to little-known Meemu Atoll and its Muli Channel (the success rate is said to be 85%). There are only two resorts in the area -- Medhufushi Island Resort and Hakuraa Hura.

Closer to Male, in South Male Atoll, luxurious COMO Cocoa Island is situated near a populous dolphin spot. Sunset dolphin cruises are offered. If your budget doesn't extend that far, the dolphin-watching cruise offered by neighboring Biyadoo Island Resort gets good reports.

For travelers who aren't staying at one of the resorts, the dolphin-spotting trips run by Cruise Maldives on Hulhumale Island are recommended.

Enjoy Water Sports

All kinds of water sports are possible in the Maldives. Kayaking, paddle-boarding, jet-skiing, water-skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, wake-boarding, kite-surfing -- you name it! Many resorts provide a selection of these activities for free.

For an extra adrenaline rush, the  Four Seasons Resort at Landaa Giraavar and Lily Beach Resort are two resorts in the Maldives that have jet-blades that will propel you out of the water.

Extreme Maldives at the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa on Furanafushi Island offers a wide variety of water sports and is well-managed. Alternatively, there are independent water sports companies on inhabited islands near Male, such as Maafushi.

Catch a Wave

You can even catch a wave in the Maldives! Most of the renowned surf breaks are located around Male. The surfing season runs from March to October, with the bigger swells from June to August.

Atoll Adventures offers surfing packages to Cinnamon Dhonveli on Farukolhufushi Island in North Male Atoll, with exclusive access to the resort's Pasta Point surf break (the region’s most consistent break). The resort has a program designed especially for surfers and a maximum of only 30 surfers are allowed there at a time.

Lohis surf break is a popular alternative in North Male Atoll. It's named after Lohifushi Island (now Hudhuranfushi), which it breaks off. This island is considered to be the main surfing island in the Maldives. Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi has been recognized as the Maldives' leading surf resort and offers special surfing packages. Due to spiraling popularity, a cap of 45 has now been placed on the number of surfers permitted to stay there.

The surfing scene on Huraa Island in North Male Atoll is buzzing as well, due to the large number of surf breaks within easy reach and several guesthouses that provide inexpensive accommodations. Famous breaks include Sultans, Honky's, and Chickens. The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa has an in-house surfing school with instructors from Australia.

If you want to escape the crowds, head south. The secluded surf breaks there are best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Beacons and Tiger Stripes, two of the most powerful waves in the Maldives, are on Huvadhoo Atoll. Addu Atoll (previously Seenu Atoll) has some standout spots too.

More centrally located Thaa and Laamu atolls are also starting to attract surfers wanting to get away from the north. However, accommodations are limited, so you may need to take a surf charter to reach the breaks.

Surf Atoll is recommended for those who are keen to go on a multi-day liveaboard surfing charter trip to various surfing spots in the Maldives.

Cruise Around the Maldives

Don't want to spend all your time at a resort in the Maldives? Boat cruises are a popular thing to do, with various options from sunset cruises in local dhonis to longer overnight and multi-day luxury yacht cruises.

Many resorts have their own boats, which are available for guests. The Four Seasons Explorer is one such boat, which functions as a floating resort. Alternatively, Yacht Maldives operates private charters. If you'd prefer to join a group, G Adventures offers this 7-Day Small Group Maldives Dhoni Cruise from Male to Male. Airbnb has some options for boat rental as well.

What's more, it's possible to visit some luxury resorts in the Maldives on day trips, such as those offered by Cruise Maldives.   Cruise Maldives also operates reasonably priced boat cruises.

Explore Male

Male, the capital of the Maldives, is densely compressed onto an island of about two square kilometers (1.25 square miles). It's one of the world's smallest capitals! Most visitors bypass it in favor of the country's idyllic uninhabited islands. However, culture vultures will find it an interesting place to explore. There are mosques, museums and markets. And, Male's compact size means it only takes a couple of hours to stroll around it.

The National Museum provides insight into the country's heritage. Its collection encompasses royal antiques, artifacts, coins, photos and other memorabilia from the days of the Sultanate. Thrones, palanquins and statues are highlights. The museum is located in Sultan Park, which was part of the Sultan's palace. The National Art Gallery is within the complex too.

The Islamic Center's landmark Grand Friday Mosque is the biggest mosque in the Maldives. Opened in 1984, it has a modern plain white marble exterior and gold dome. Nearby, the historic Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiiye) and graveyard provide quite a contrast. It's the oldest mosque in the Maldives and dates back to the 17th century. Notably, the mosque was constructed using stone made from coral. You'll need to go inside to appreciate its beauty. Medhu Ziyaaraiy, the tomb of Abdul Barakat Yoosuf Al Barbary from Morocco, who introduced Islam to the Maldives in the 12th century, is in the same area.

Head towards the harbor to see the fascinating local market where fruit, vegetables and freshly caught fish are sold.

The area around Alimas Carnival, next to the Hulhumale ferry terminal, is known for its hip coffee shops and cafes.

If you'd prefer to take a guided tour, Secret Paradise offers comprehensive full and half day Male city walking tours. The Male walking tour conducted by S&Y Tours and Travel is shorter.

Do keep in mind that the Maldives follows strict Islamic practices. So, be sure to dress respectably, covering your legs and shoulders. In addition, women must cover their head with a scarf or cloth to enter mosques. Men will need to wear a shirt and trousers. No t-shirts or shorts.

Island Hop and Visit Local Villages

Due to a change in law, tourism is now permitted on inhabited Maldives islands. Many resorts offer excursions by boat to these islands and fishing villages, where you can interact with local communities and enjoy local food.

And, if you think visiting the Maldives is expensive and perhaps even unaffordable, think again! Tourists can stay in village guesthouses (some of which are quite boutique and attractive) and experience the simple local way of living. Most are close to Male, on islands such as Hulhumale, Maafushi, and Guraidhoo.

Guests at the Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa have the option of exploring five neighboring islands by bicycle or on foot.

Secret Paradise on Hulhumale Island offers full and half day island hopping tours, plus activities such as cooking lessons and meals with local families. S&Y Tours and Travel on Male is also recommended.

Get a Massage or Spa Treatment

Need to relax and rejuvenate? There's possibly no better place to get a spa treatment than the Maldives, with the soothing ocean as a backdrop. Many resorts in the Maldives have spas. However, some really stand out for their unusual settings.

The spa at Huvafen Fushi is the world's first underwater spa, with two glass-walled treatment rooms. Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa spa is situated on its own separate island, which guests are transported to by boat. Its defining feature is its Night Spa with four special lunar rituals on the beach. If you're a nature lover, don't miss the spa at the Six Senses Laamu . Its cocoon-shaped treatment rooms are made from twigs and branches twined together! Drift Spa at Niyama Private Island Resor t also has a delightfully intimate setting.

Veli Spa at Kurumba wows guests with its lush garden spa, the first spa in the Maldives to feature traditional herbal remedies.

Award-winning Duniye Spa has locations at many resorts in the Maldives.  Other top spas in the Maldives are Talise Spa at Jumeirah Vittaveli , Banyan Tree Spa Vabbinfaru , and Angsana Spa Ihuru.

Peal Sands Hotel is a relatively inexpensive option on Huraa Island. Secret Paradise offers lunch and spa trips there .

Practice Yoga

Yoga retreats are growing in popularity in the Maldives. Secret Paradise arranges reasonably-priced seven day yoga holidays , with twice-daily sessions. A range of yoga styles are practiced.

Some resorts also offer in-house yoga classes, including morning and sunset yoga on the beach, followed by pranayama and meditation. Kurumba Maldives , Baros ,  Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru , COMO Coco Island , and Jumeirah Vittaveli are all known to have decent yoga classes.

Just Relax!

With a view like this, you can't miss spending some time (or a lot of time) soaking up the sun in a strategically placed hammock. It's certain you won't want to move!

15 Best Beaches in the Maldives You Have to See to Believe

These pristine white-sand beaches provide the perfect inspiration for your next vacation.

10 best places to visit in maldives

A chain of 1,192 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most serene, romantic, and wildly scenic destinations in the world. The islands are clustered into atolls, based on their proximity to coral reefs, and are surrounded by azure-colored lagoons. These still waters lend themselves to those dreamy overwater bungalows that have become synonymous with the archipelago, while the coral reefs make it a sought-after snorkeling destination. Of course, many visitors to this idyllic vacation spot will be content to luxuriate on the islands' pristine stretches of fine white sand. With that in mind, these are the 15 best beaches in the Maldives.

Cocoa Island

Corbis Unreleased/Getty Images

A luxurious hideaway, Cocoa Island is home to the stunning Como Cocoa Island resort . The South Malé Atoll island, also called Makunufushi, is known for its sugar-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters . The thriving coral reefs are one of the island's best features for snorkelers or divers and are easy to visit with the resort's experts. Another reason guests love the island is the privacy Como Cocoa's beaches provide.

Landaa Giraavaru

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

Home to a Four Seasons Resort , Landaa Giraavaru is one of the most coveted private islands in the Maldives. The beaches that make up this paradise are part of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve . Visitors will find a long, otherworldly sandbank that extends into the ocean. Gaze at jaw-dropping waters with a kaleidoscope of blue and green hues from the idyllic shores. Plunge beneath the surface to explore a live reef and keep your eyes peeled for manta rays and sea turtles.

The beaches of Baros island are immaculate, encircled by clear waters and a coral reef, which adds a fantastical dimension to the unparalleled views. To experience the serene landscape, stay at the only resort on this private island: Baros Maldives . The property makes things memorable by facilitating romantic candlelit dinners on the soft sand.

Reethi Rah is home to some of the most secluded beaches in the Maldives, which are exclusively for guests of One&Only . The island boasts roughly three and a half miles of coast, giving the resort 12 breathtaking stretches of sand. It also has a separate time zone set an hour ahead of Malé, so you can savor the spectacular sunsets with your evening cocktails. One&Only will set up loungers on the beach for families wanting to spend the day in the sun and also offers villas with direct beach access.

Veligandu Island

Veligandu Maldives Resort Island

Soft sand, overwater villas, and a sandbar stretching as far as the eye can see are what await guests on Veligandu Island. The beach is only open to Veligandu Island Resort & Spa guests. This adults-only property in the North Ari Atoll is spacious enough that every guest feels as if they're on a private stretch of sand. The beaches are also lined with luxe thatched-roof pavilions and loungers, and the reef around the island gives the water innumerable shades of green and blue.

On Huvahendhoo Island in Ari Atoll, this beach is an exclusive playground for Lily Beach Resort & Spa guests. Get your first glimpse of its perfect white sands during your seaplane journey to the resort. On the ground, relax in one of the luxury beach villas, complete with private Jacuzzis featuring ocean views. Don't miss the nearby dive sites, which are among the most popular in the Maldives due to the unusual underwater topography. Caves, tunnels, and thilas (underwater islands) await under the surface.

Thulusdhoo Island

While the Maldives are home to many stunning luxury hotels, there are a few hot spots where visitors can appreciate this dreamy archipelago's culture. Thulusdhoo is a Maldivian surfing haven and the capital of the Kaafu Atoll. To reach the island, take an affordable, hour-and-a-half ferry ride from Malé; there are a variety of hotels for all budgets. Travelers looking to swim and relax on the sand should check out Bikini Beach, while experienced surfers chasing the best swells can head to Cokes Beach.

Hulhumale Island

by sharaff/Getty Images

Located in the North Malé Atoll, Hulhumale is a human-made Maldives island. It offers a more commercial atmosphere than many other islands in the archipelago and is well worth experiencing for a weekend. Hulhumale's beaches are a delight, lined with buzzing hotels, shops, restaurants, and water sports outfitters. Spend your days snorkeling, paddleboarding, or sipping a cocktail with your toes in the sand.

Vaadhoo Island

PawelG Photo/Getty Images

Although Vaadhoo's white sands and aquamarine water are beautiful by day, you'll want to explore its coastline after dark. This island in Raa Atoll is known for its bioluminescent beach, where microorganisms in the water sometimes create a glittering blue glow along the shore. For the best chance of seeing the dazzling natural phenomenon known as the "Sea of Stars," plan to visit between July and February.

Fulhadhoo Island

Two hours from Malé by speedboat, Fulhadhoo Island in the Baa Atoll is home to just 250 people. It's one of the quietest and most beautiful islands tourists can experience, with largely secluded beaches that feature calm lagoons and small natural pools. It also offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife sightings. Fulhadhoo shelters myriad fish species, dolphins, and turtles, making it a prime spot to snorkel and dive.

Ukulhas Island

Ukulhas is an under-the-radar island with beaches that are frequently cleaned to encourage tourism and combat pollution. The Alif Atoll island has resorts for every price range, most just a short walk from the beach, though none with direct access. Nevertheless, the beach is exactly why tourists come to the island. It's an uninterrupted one-kilometer stretch of white sand, lined with chaise lounges and umbrellas. The beach is also quiet and spacious enough that you'll never be without a lounger. Ukulhas promises an idyllic Maldivian beach experience no matter the budget.

Rangali Island

Jan Senderek/Getty Images

The beach at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island , which occupies two private islands, is as breathtaking from above as it is from the ground. Relax on the beach or in an overwater villa outfitted with a private sun deck. For a truly one-of-a-kind experience beyond the white sandy shores, book the Muraka suite, which features a bedroom, bathroom, closet, and viewing space all completely submerged in the island's blue waters.

Set within the South Ari Atoll, Omandhoo is a quiet island that has developed its tourism offerings. More than half the island consists of a village with 800 residents. Western customs are less prevalent here, so visitors interested in respectfully learning more about Maldivian culture will appreciate the island. As for the beaches on Omadhoo, they are clean, quiet, and include a long sandbank extending through the crystal-clear water. The reef surrounding the beaches is home to schools of fish like barracuda and snapper, turtles, and even whale sharks.

Dhigurah Island

About 60 miles from the main island of Malé, Dhigurah is known for whale shark sightings, world-class diving, and beaches you'll never want to leave. The South Ari Atoll island also has a dive center, and the water surrounding the intimate beach is a gathering spot for sea turtles and several species of colorful fish. Its picturesque sandbar features picnic tables. Like Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah is home to several hotels and hot spots for travelers and locals alike.

Home to the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa , the island is surrounded by a 360-degree reef. The picturesque beaches, with brilliant white sand and alluring turquoise waters, are protected by Park Hyatt's sustainability commitment. This ensures the reef remains healthy, the waters and beaches are clean, and the overall environmental impact is minimized. Though the hotel is gold-certified by Green Globe, the beaches must be monitored by an independent resident marine biologist to maintain the organization's standards and retain its status.

10 best places to visit in maldives

Paradise personified. Heaven on earth. Screensaver goals. The Maldives has earned a lot of monikers since it opened to tourists in the 1970s.

Over the past 50 years, it’s become known as a honeymoon hot spot, a family-friendly getaway and one of the world’s most coveted vacation destinations.

And while it may seem like a lot of hype for one small, spread-out island nation in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives really does live up to it. From coconut-fringed islands and colorful reefs to warm smiles and even warmer curries, it’s often a once-in-a-lifetime getaway for travelers. Whether you’re heading off to a ritzy private island resort or a more affordable local island, there’s a handful of things to know before departure. Here are our top tips and best advice ahead of a trip to the Maldives.

1. Plan for at least 5 nights in the Maldives

For all travelers, it takes a plane ride or three to land in this far-flung slice of paradise. So, while a weekend to the Maldives may work for travelers based in Asia, five nights will suffice if you’re crunched for time and budget. And if neither is an issue, plan for at least a week to fully unwind and embrace island life.

A seaplane glides through the sky above small islands and islets in the middle of a blue ocean

2. You can get around via seaplane or speedboat

When choosing your island resort, pay attention to whether it’s reachable by seaplane or speedboat. Although seaplane transfers give picture-worthy views of the pearl-shaped atolls, they often cost much more. And be aware there’s a 25kg (55lbs) total luggage per person allowance on seaplanes. So, if you’re looking to save money, pick a resort closer to Male that you can transfer to via speedboat. You can also take a domestic flight to another atoll in the Maldives and a speedboat to the resort.

3. Island-hopping is doable (and encouraged)

Many travelers spend weeks poring over which private island resort is the best for them, but you don’t have to choose one. Beach bums can split their time between resorts. You’ll need to travel back to Male airport, where a representative from your next resort will meet you and transfer you there via seaplane or speedboat. If the resorts are close together, you can charter a speedboat from one resort to another.

4. Aim to land in Male in the morning

If you’re staying at a resort accessible by seaplane transfer, arriving in the morning is crucial. Once the sun sets, seaplanes stop flying, so you’d need to stay overnight in Male or Hulhumale to wait for the next seaplane. If your resort is accessible via a speedboat or water taxi, arriving at night is less of an issue, but the Maldives scenery is so stunning you’ll want to be able to see it.

5. Understand “island time”

These tiny private islands operate by their own rules, including their own time zones. Some resorts will ask guests to set their clocks to “island time,” an hour forward to give them an extra hour of sunlight for snorkeling or swimming .

6. Stock up well (there are no grocery stores for tourists)

There are no grocery stores or Walmarts on these tiny private islands. So, triple-check that you’ve got everything you need, including reef-safe sunscreen to help protect one of the Maldives’ most precious natural habitats. Every resort has a boutique store where you can pick up necessities you may have forgotten, but prices are often insanely expensive.

7. Familiarize yourself with the prohibited items list

The Maldives is a devout Muslim country with strict rules. So travelers entering cannot bring alcohol, pornographic materials, pork products or idols of worship  among other things . If anything prohibited is found, it will be taken away on arrival.

8. Local islands are a bargain but come with caveats

The local islands are a great and safe option for travelers on a budget and those not willing to shell out thousands for an island getaway. Small Maldivian-run guesthouses offer a much more intimate look at daily life, but there are a few things to know first. Alcohol is illegal on local islands, so don’t expect to enjoy a beer by the beach. Travelers must also dress conservatively on local islands by covering their shoulders and knees. Women don’t need to cover their heads, but wearing a bathing suit outside of designated “bikini beaches” is not allowed and could land you with a fine.

A woman lies in a resort infinity pool

9. There’s no standard tipping etiquette

Tipping on top of your restaurant bill at the resort is not expected because a 10% tip is already included. However, if you want to leave something for your favorite server at the end of your stay that is more than OK. Guests can also write a review calling out their favorite team members; management often rewards staff for stellar service. Leaving a tip ranging from US$2 to US$10 per day for housekeeping is also customary. And if you have a butler, tipping 10% of the cost of your stay is a good rule.

10. You can pay in USD

The local currency is the Maldivian rufiya, but US dollars are also accepted. You can get some local currency from the ATM at the airport on arrival. If you want to exchange money for rufiya, you can do so in the airport at the Bank of Maldives Foreign Exchange. Keep your receipt with you so you can change anything extra back into your local currency when you leave.

11. Resort doctors can help with health concerns

The vast majority of travelers will go straight from the plane to a private island resort. Should you have any health issues during your stay, the on-island doctor will be able to assist you.

12. There is a “green tax” for tourists

Every tourist is charged a government tax to stay in a hotel, liveaboard or guesthouse. The tax is US$6 per day unless you’re staying in a guesthouse on a local island with 50 or fewer registered rooms, then the tax is US$3 per day. The charge will be included in your overall bill.

13. Sustainability initiatives are everywhere

As the world’s lowest-lying country, the Maldives is under serious threat from climate change.
