Dakak Beach

The very popular Dakak Beach is most known for its beautifully shaped cove and powdery white sand, and as a diving mecca in Mindanao. Pristine blue waters, excellent dive sites with an abundance of coral reefs, and a magnificent sunset horizon characterize this tropical eden. Dakak Park and Beach Resort boasts 15 hectares of wooded land, a natural reservoir for native plants and animals, and a 750-meter private white-sand beach.

Aliguay Island

Dapitan City is not just all about Dakak Park Beach Resort and Jose Rizal anymore. One of the best beaches to experience when in Dapitan is the crystal clear turquoise waters of Aliguay Island.

While underway the swells were a bit rough, but that didn’t matter anymore as we were greeted by the shimmering white sands of Aliguay Island upon arrival.  I find the island small and inhabited mostly by fisher folks. To my surprise, I discovered an airstrip! Such a small island at that with an airstrip can only mean two things!! Ultimate Guide to Zamboanga del Norte

Though not currently as popular as other destinations in Mindanao, Zamboanga del Norte teems with history and culture. The largest province in the Zamboanga Peninsula, it has a wealth of natural attractions as well.

It is dubbed the Twin-City Province, being the home of neighboring cities Dipolog, the provincial capital, and Dapitan, its cultural heart. 

The latter has the distinction of being the country’s first Heritage Zone. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) made the declaration on May 27, 2011.

Either of these two cities is a convenient base for those thinking of traveling to Zamboanga del Norte. 

To help you with the planning, here is a four-day guide to the best places to see and experience in the province. 

Day 1: Sample the Best of Dipolog 

‘D Hotel  Rizal Avenue corner Osmeña Street, Dipolog

Upon arrival in Dipolog, you can drop your things off first at ‘D Hotel. Centrally located in the heart of the city, this hotel has options that range from rooms to suites. 

The hotel offers free breakfast, WiFi, and airport shuttle for guests. Another option is this hotel that is located only one to two minutes away from Dipolog airport.

Dakak Park and Beach Resort Barangay Taguilon, Dapitan

The “it” place in Mindanao in the ‘90s, this resort still lives up to its reputation decades later. It remains a favorite among locals and those from nearby provinces. Day 3 of your trip can be spent just at this resort. 

Dakak’s white sand beach is a jump off point for water activities, while its Adventure Zone offers outdoor ones. 

The resort has accommodations that have scenic views of the Sulu Sea and the surrounding cliffs and mountains.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral

You can start your trip with a visit to this church named after the principal patroness of the city. Constructed in 1894, it has since undergone several renovations, the latest of which was in 2009 when its façade was inlaid with marble. 

Also called Dipolog Cathedral, its present altar is a replica of the retablo originally designed by José Rizal during his exile. One of the main attractions is its ceiling made of hardwood.

The cathedral was designated as one of the 500 Jubilee Churches for the quincentennial of Philippine Christianity.

Just across is Plaza Magsaysay which, though rather unremarkable, lends well for a pleasant morning stroll. The park sits right beside the City Hall.

Sungkilaw Falls

You can spend the rest of the morning relaxing at this waterfall that is about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Dipolog. 

Nestled in the heart of a lush forest, Sungkilaw Falls challenges visitors with a rough hike, but its pristine and refreshing waters make the trek worth it. 

With the help of the local government and Subanen communities, structures have been constructed in the area such as cottages and toilets. Trails had also been carved out for a smoother hike.  

Cogon Eco-Park  

Spend the entire afternoon at this protected area that is home to different species of flora and fauna.

On the way, you can drop by the city center for some takeout lunch. Then you can proceed to picnic at the eco-park amid towering acacia, mahogany, rattan, and narra trees. 

What started out as a reforestation project in 1952 is now 344 hectares of land covered with thick forests. It is a go-to place for families and friends for a weekend of camping. 

Aside from the hiking trails and the camping site, it has a recreation of a Subanen Village, a hanging bridge, and an aviary. 

Dipolog Sunset Boulevard

Cap off your day at Dipolog’s most famous strip. Promenade along this boulevard facing the Sulu Sea where you can catch the sunset. 

While waiting for the sun to dip below the horizon, you can snack on the various street foods sold by nearby hawkers. 

This stretch comes alive as dusk settles. It transforms to a hive of activity with a seemingly endless row of vendors selling all sorts of eats from barbecues to fried chicken skin, ice cream to fresh fruits. 

Day 2: A Dose of History and Adventure

Church of Saint James the Greater

The bulk of your second day will be spent at Glorious Fantasy Land which does not open until 2pm. You can opt to spend the morning exploring some of Dapitan’s historical sites. 

Start the day with a quick visit to the Church of Saint James the Greater. This was where Rizal heard mass every Sunday during his four-year exile. 

There is a marker near the entrance where Rizal usually sat. He could not go near the altar during mass because of his excommunication from the Catholic Church.

The country’s National Hero painted a backdrop inspired by a church in Barcelona for the altar. Sadly, the painting was later destroyed in a fire. 

Aside from its ties to Rizal, the church is also known for its distinct ceiling. Alternating orange and white rectangles form a swirling pattern, creating an almost dizzying illusion of depth and motion. 

Ilihan Hill

After visiting the church, you can go on a short hike atop the hill just behind it. There is a staircase by the entrance where you have to climb over 200 steps to reach the top.  

Ilihan Hill served as the burial ground of Dapitan’s original settlers. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, they renamed it Fort Dapitan and put up stone walls and cannons. 

Dapitan Heritage Zone

The NHCP determined 33 heritage structures in Dapitan’s Heritage Zone, giving rise to its moniker the “Shrine City.”

Aside from the Church of Saint James the Greater, a bike around town reveals century-old ancestral houses and other timeworn structures.

One of the few remaining original heritage houses in the city is that of Pablo Page’s. Built in 1919, it was often the venue of gatherings among the local social and political elite in the ‘50s to the ‘70s. 

Another ancestral house is that of Aniano Adasa’s which now houses the Dapitan Tourism Office. It was built in 1900 and has American and Spanish influences.

Since 2016, the local government has been working with the national government and the private sector to preserve their historical and cultural treasures. 

Glorious Fantasyland

Spend the rest of the day at Mindanao’s biggest theme park. It has over 30 rides and attractions for all ages. Adrenaline junkies can go on a ride at their Zimmerman roller coaster and the Galleon, while kids can take a spin at the teacup ride or the ferris wheel.

Glorious Fantasyland is also known for its musical show entitled “Nia and Anwar” which starts at 8pm. After the show, visitors are treated to a colorful “Festival of Colors” parade with its 12 elaborate floats. A fireworks display punctuates the night every weekend.  

Glorious Fantasyland’s all-in package of unlimited rides, show, parade, and fireworks display during weekends is at Php1000/adult and Php500/child 4ft below. Gates open at 2pm and close at 10pm or later depending on the volume of guests. 

Day 3: Discover Dakak

Dapitan is not only synonymous with Rizal but also with Dakak Park and Beach Resort thanks to the TV ads that ran regularly in a popular noontime show in the ‘90s. 

The resort is a 15-hectare area that is known for its lush coves and 750-meter white sand beach. Visitors can engage in different water activities such as jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and banana boat riding. 

Dakak also has excellent dive spots for amateur and professional divers. Its waters are home to soft corals, marine invertebrates, large basket sponges, sea anemones, clownfish, and octopuses. If you are lucky, you can encounter blue spotted rays. There is even a wreck of a passenger ship.  

If you prefer land-based activities, the Adventure Park offers rappelling, rock climbing, airsoft games, and horseback riding. It has all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) for rent and one of the longest dual ziplines in Asia.

If you are not staying in Dakak, a day tour will set you back Php1,000/adult and Php500/child. The fee includes access to the beach, dolphin and kiddie pools, Adventure Zone Area, Aquasport Center, and restaurants. 

Not included are rental fees, the golf course, and Villa Angelina. 

Day 4: Retrace the Steps of Rizal in Dapitan

Rizal Disembarkation Site

It is only fitting to begin your final day in Zamboanga del Norte at the site where Rizal started his life as an exile. He disembarked from the steamer S.S. Cebu at Santa Cruz Beach, 7pm on July 17, 1892. 

Marking the point of landing is a monument conceived by Antonio Tuviera and designed by Architect Nilo Ajo Ferraren. It is composed of bronze statues of Rizal, ship captain Delgras, and three artillery men. 

The statues were sculpted, installed, and bronzed by Ronel Roces, a former apprentice of National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 29, 2009. 

Across the landing site is a 20-foot cross symbolizing the propagation of Christianity in Dapitan.

Rizal Park and Shrine

This 16-hectare protected area aims to preserve the memories of Rizal during his exile in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896. He himself purchased the estate. 

The property has five faithfully reconstructed bamboo and nipa houses. All were originally built by Rizal and had been rebuilt in their original locations.

The biggest of the five is Casa Residencia which served as Rizal’s residence. 

The other structures are Casa Redonda, the quarters for Rizal’s students; Casa Cuadrada, a secondary dormitory to accommodate his growing number of pupils; Casa Redonda Pequeña, a henhouse; and Casitas Hospitales, two structures originally intended as tea houses but Rizal converted them into clinics for patients from far-flung areas. 

Near the shrine’s main gate is Museo ni Jose Rizal. It houses several memorabilia including Rizal’s letters, wardrobe, medical instruments, fishing tools, and replicas of his artworks including those of his wife Josephine Bracken. 

The original blackboard, table, and chairs used in his school are also on display. 

Do not miss the heart-shaped rock where Rizal wrote his longest poem, “Mi Retiro”, which has 24 stanzas. This is also where he exchanged vows with Bracken.

Admission to Rizal Park and Shrine is free. 

Getting there

Dipolog is the gateway to the province of Zamboanga del Norte. Major local airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have direct flights to the city. There are also daily buses from Zamboanga City to Dipolog and Dapitan.

The cheapest way to explore the cities is through jeepneys and tricycles. You may also rent your own vehicle. Exploring downtown Dapitan is best done on a bike. Coordinate with your hotel for rentals.

Zamboanga del Norte Tourist Spots

It was a long travel from Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte . My primary destination in this province is Jose Rizal Shrine in Dapitan City - the place where  Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Philippine National Hero, spent his few years when he was exiled but still made this life fruitful by working as a doctor, sculptor, farmer, teacher and participating other activities. Not only that, heritage houses are just some of the tourist spots and destinations in Dapitan City.

According to Google Maps, GV Hotel is a few blocks away from the terminal, so I rode on a motorcycle and I just discovered that it's actually a walking distance. Checked in, tidied up and rested for 30 minutes. Then, had my late lunch at the food court inside the mall in front of GV Hotel . After that, walked on the street going back to the terminal. Rode in an Evergood bus to Dapitan City. Alighted when I saw the city plaza. Travel time is about 40 minutes. Fare is 20 pesos.

According to the historical marker: "This is the site of the Case Real, office residence and administration building of the Politico - Militar Governor of the district. Here, Jose Rizal lived as an exile from July 17, 1892 to March, 1893 when he was transferred to Talisay, now the Rizal Dapitan Shrine."

According to the marker "This building is a symbol of American Architechture with a touch of Spanish Structural Lattice Artwork. The sling windows adhere to Japanese style. The city's richness in cultural heritage is greatly and elaborately displayed in this house."

7. Jose Rizal Museum and Shrine

The Rizal Shrine in Dapitan City was the place where Jose P. Rizal, Philippine National Hero, was exiled by the Spaniards in 1892. It was also the place where he worked as a doctor, sculptor, farmer, teacher and many other activities. Rizal purchased this land after winning a lottery in 1892. Later, he together with his mother, sisters and relatives transferred here from Calamba, Laguna. However, on January 15, 1897, all of his property was confiscated by the Spanish authorities. Converted this property into a park in memory of Rizal and was declared as the National Rizal Park in 1940.

It was already sunset when I left Rizal Shrine. By the entrance, I rode in a tricycle to the bus terminal bound for Dipolog City terminal, had my dinner, and walked to the hotel.  The next day, still using Google Map, I walked on the streets to Dipolog Cathedral and plaza, however, they were both under constructions. Instead, had my breakfast at one of the fast-foods in the city.

WHERE TO STAY OR HOTEL IN DIPOLOG CITY:  I stayed at GV Hotel. It is one of the cheapest and budget-friendly hotels in the city. For an overnight stay, I paid 600 pesos; the room has a toilet and bath, single bed, cable tv, and an aircon. GV Hotel is situated in the center, thus, it is a walking distance to the Integrated Terminal, food establishments, and banks.

HOW TO GET TO DIPOLOG AND DAPITAN CITY, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE:  Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines has their regular trips to the airports in Dipolog City. If you're from the nearby provinces, you can ride in a Rural transit bus or UV Express van at any terminal. Travel time are as follows: Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to Dipolog is 5.5 hours and Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental to Dipolog is 5.5 hours.  READ: SOLO-BACKPACKING IN ZamBaSulta, Region 9, Misamis Occ.

Dipolog City is a 3rd class city of Zamboanga Del Norte. Why did I say that it’s complete? Well, it is simply because of its ideal location! The city is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains and rich and abundant seas. Moreover, the city center is also full of growing establishments that make the city’s overall economy great. Dipolog is also called an “Orchid City,” thanks to the surrounding mountains, which contain numerous species of orchids and other rare plants. So if you’re a plantito or a plantita, you’ll surely love this place!

Oh, and who could even resist the tasty and savory delicacy of Dipolog, the Spanish sardines? Yep, it is also nicknamed the “Bottled Sardines Capital of the Philippines” for this exact reason. First on the list is a place not only because of its astonishing beauty but also its historical significance. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Dipolog City because it is designed by our one and only national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. It is said that the church was established sometime in the year 1895 and that Dr. Jose Rizal himself designed the altar.

Hike the 3003 Steps to Linabo Peak

Linabo Peak in Dipolog City is easily one of the best hiking spots in the entire province of Zamboanga Del Norte. Zamboanga Del Norte: The Twin-City Province

Zamboanga del Norte, or simply known as ZANORTE, is a province of the Philippines located in the Zamboanga Peninsula region in Mindanao. Its capital is Dipolog City and the province borders Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay to the south and Misamis Occidental to the east. The Sulu Sea lies to the northwest of Zamboanga del Norte. Zamboanga del Norte is the largest province of the Zamboanga Peninsula in terms of land area.

Dubbed as the Twin-City Province, Zamboanga del Norte has been made famous by the beauty and charm of the Orchid City of Dipolog and the historic, rustic quaintness of the Shrine City of Dapitan.

Decrying Spanish authority over his beloved country, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Philippine National Hero, lived in exile in faraway Dapitan City, then only a sleepy town in Mindanao. Here, he spent fruitfully his last four years in exile, from 1892 to 1896, to practice medicine, pursue scientific studies, keep with his artistic and literary endeavors, and widen his knowledge of languages. In Dapitan, Dr. Rizal found a school and a hospital, and became a farmer to prove to the people that farming is as good a profession as medicine.

The original estate of Dr. Rizal in Dapitan has been declared a national shrine and is being administered by the National Historical Institute. Hence, the city monicker, Shrine City of the Philippines. By the year 2020, Dapitan is poised to become the Dr. Jose Rizal Heritage Center of the Philippines, owing to the wealth of Rizal memorabilia and memorable places associated with the country beloved hero.

Zamboanga del Norte today is equally famous for Dakak Park and Beach Resort, the province's foremost natural attraction. The very popular Dakak Beach is most known for its beautifully shaped cove and powdery white sand, and as a diving mecca in Mindanao. Pristine blue waters, excellent dive sites with an abundance of coral reefs, and a magnificent sunset horizon characterizes this tropical Eden. Dakak Park and Beach Resort boasts 15 hectares of wooded land, a natural reservoir for native plants and animals, and a 750-meter private white-sand beach.

About half of the province's land area is devoted to agriculture. Corn, coconut, and rice are the major crops. The province being rich in marine and mineral sources, its fish production has accelerated through the development of fishponds. Commercial fishing has likewise steadily increased through the years, with the yellow fin tuna as the primary species.

Zamboanga del Norte is subdivided into 25 municipalities and 2 cities. These are further subdivided into 691 barangays, and clustered into 3 congressional districts.

Physical Features

Zamboanga del Norte comprises the northern portion of the Zamboanga Peninsula. It is bounded on the north and west by the Sulu Sea, on the east by Misamis Occidental, and on the south by Zamboanga del Sur.

The province occupies a total land area of 6,618 square kilometers. It has an average elevation of 243.8 meters, with Mt. Dabiak in Katipunan as the highest peak at 2,600 meters. Other parts, near the coastlines, are plains. The province's irregular coastline runs 400 kilometers from north to south.

Zamboanga del Norte has a mild and moderate climate due to evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year. Its southern portion has a longer dry season.

Brief History

The early history of Zamboanga del Norte is shared with that of Zamboanga City, which had been the center of the entire Mindanao area, most notably during the American era. When Zamboanga City became a chartered city on October 12, 1936, it encompassed the southern tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula and the island of Basilan, making it the largest city in the world in terms of land area.

This all changed in 1948 when Basilan was made into a separate chartered city, and further, when Republic Act No. 711, issued on June 6, 1952, created two more provinces out of Zamboanga City. One of these provinces was Zamboanga del Norte.

Dakak Park and Beach Resort

The Rizal Shrine

This is the major historical landmark of the city. It is the original estate of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal which he acquired by purchase during his exile in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896. The Rizal Shrine is approximately two kilometers from the Dapitan City Hall. Its land area has been considerably restored to its original size of 16 hectares with the reclamation of 10,974 square meters.

Casa Residencia

A preserved structure of the main house which served as Rizal’s residence with his mother, sisters, close relatives and neighbors in Laguna in Dapitan. It is a one-room house encircled with a veranda, which is Japanese inspired. It is situated at precisely the best spot feng sui would dictate: standing in a slightly hgier ground than the flat lawn, open to the sea view in front but fully protected by the hill behind. A simple comfort room connected by wooden planks is found at the rear.

Casa Redonda

This is an octagonal dwelling which served as quarters for Rizal's pupils. It was later converted to a clinic and it was here where George Tauter, the foster father of Josephine Bracken, was operated on his eye.

Casa Redonda Pequena

A hexagonal structure situated at the right side of the main house which served as a chicken house.

Casitas Hospitales

There are two of these structures which were originally intended as tea houses which Rizal converted into clinics to accommodate patients from far-flung municipalities.

Casa Quadrada

Rizal built this hut as a dormitory to accommodate the growing number of pupils in Talisay School. The area underneath served as a workshop for the pupils.

Casitas de Salud

Originally, these were teahouses. When his fame as a physician spread to the entire Philippines and other countries, these were converted into wards to accommodate his patients from far-flung places.

The Rizaliana

A modern concrete building constructed in 1972 which houses all Rizaliana books, periodicals, and other historical exhibits. Part of it also serves as the office of the Rizal Shrine curator.

Mi Retiro Rock

In the old Dapitan history, this shaped rock was known as “Batong Lumayag” (sailing stone) for it appeared to be floating or sailing during high tide. Officially, this is called Mi Retiro Rock for it was here where Rizal wrote his longest poem, “Mi Retiro”, which was composed of 24 stanzas. Presently, it is within an artificial lagoon.

The Aqueduct

Rizal’s pupils and some other laborers built this aqueduct system or dam about 110 meters long and inclined walls of about 2.5 meters deep. A bamboo piping leads straight to the main haouse and kitchen. A forest and watershed in a higher-up steep hill ensure the supply of water to the dam.  The original dam still exists today.

The Amphitheater

An open-air auditorium with a seating capacity of 500 which was constructed beyond the Mi Retiro Rock.

Gloria de Dapitan

Aside from the enchanting Dakak Park and Beach Resort and the historic Rizal Shrine, which are among country’s favorite tourist destinations, Dapitan City can now boast of a world-class commercial center. Gloria de Dapitan, which is situated at Sunset Boulevard, is a one-of-its kind three hectare commercial complex.

Right at the very heart of Gloria de Dapitan is Gallera de Dapitan, which architects Fernando Mirasol designed. It has a deluxe cockpit which may also be used for live entertainment shows, boxing matches and other crowd-drawing competitions. There is fully-airconditioned Exodus Bowling Center, which is the first of its kind in northwestern Mindanao, and could be at par with best bowling lanes in Metro Manila. It has eight lanes and setting the pins are computer-aided. Those who enjoy boxing, aerobics and belly dancing, there are state-of-the-art fitness equipment at Powerhouse Gym-the biggest gym in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Fantasyland (Gloria de Dapitan)

The 200 million-peso amusement park in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte. Called Gloria’s Fantasyland, the amusement park promises children fun and excitement. It is the first and only amusement park in Visayas and Mindanao. Composed of 20 major rides, like the choco-cup ride, the midi-flume ride, the carousel, the swinger, the Apollo, the minitrain, a giant roller coaster, and interactive rides. The amusement park was inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last Ma 29, 2009. One of the attractions during the opening was the live 2-hour telecast of EAT BULAGA inside the Fantasyland grounds.

Relief Map of Mindanao

Across St. James Church is a giant map of Mindanao on a total area of roughly 900-square meters done by Dr. Jose Rizal with the help of Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, S.J. Intended as a device for teaching history and geography to townsfolk, it also contributed to the beautification of the town plaza.

It is of great interest to recall that Fr. Sanchez was Rizal's favorite teacher in Greek and Latin classics in the Ateneo. Sanchez arrived in Dapitan in August 1892 upon instructions from Spanish church authorities to convince Rizal to return to the Catholic faith. Rizal refused, but he and Fr. Sanchez remained good friends until his execution at Bagumbayan Field.

Ilihan Hill

To protect settlements from foreign invaders, the Spaniards constructed military fortresses, among them, Fort de Dapitan in 1762. The fort was strategically placed atop Ilihan Hill in the poblacion overlooking Dapitan Bay.

A stone wall was built along Ilihan's slopes and the fort mounted cannons to command the area. Relics of Fort de Dapitan are still visible. Two of its cannons have been installed at the Plaza across the Dapitan City Hall.

Aliguay & Silinog Islands

These are island barangays located roughly 10 to 14 kilometers, respectively from Tag-olo Point. Both islands have white sand beaches and rich aquatic resources. Both are accessible by pumpboats.

Sta. Cruz Beach

Two significant dates in history claim this beach as the point of debarkation. When Fr. Pascual Acufia, S.J., arrived in Dapitan in 1607 and baptized the natives, he brought with him the Cross, the symbol of Christianity, and first touched land at Sta. Cruz Beach. It was on the same spot centuries later where Dr. Jose Rizal disembarked from the S.S. Cebu as an exile destined to spend about four fruitful and productive years in a place which now is a shrine to his martyrdom.

Saint James Church

A lasting heritage and symbol of Christianization of the region and locality, Saint James Church and the Catholic Rectory are two edifices that have with stood the test of time and the elements. It is also a place where Rizal hear mass every sunday during his exile. Over the years, the old Spanish masonry and architecture are still recognizable. The facades and materials of these buildings are living evidence of their cultural and historical significance.

Rizal’s Landing Site       

The site where Rizal disembarked from the steamer “S.S. Cebu” located at Santa Cruz Beach. In 1565 with the arrival of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, a 20-foot cross was erected to symbolize the propagation of Christianity in the area. Dr. Jose P. Rizal landed 7:00 o’clock P.M. on July 17, 1892 to begin the life of an exile in Dapitan. With Captain Delgras and three artillery men, they walked through Sta. Cruz Street with a “Farol de Combate” to the Casa Real where he was presented to Don Ricardo Carnicero, Spanish Military Governor of the District.

Dapitan City Hall

The old “municipio” in 1890s, its structural and architectural features were patterned after those of the Casa Real.  Its interior had undergone several changes but the exterior remained through the years thus, adding antique ambiance to the city plaza.

Dapitan City Plaza

The plaza which was designed, developed and beautified by Dr. Jose P. Rizal with the assistance of Governandor Ricardo Carnicero during his stay in Dapitan. He planned to make it comparable with the one he saw during his journey to Europe. Rizal provided the lighting system around the area (tree trunks with coconut oil lamps). The development was placed in September 1892.

Acacia Trees

Dr. Jose P. Rizal used to plant acacia trees to add beautification to the plaza of poblacion during his stay in Dapitan. Some of these acacia trees are still standing in the plaza of the city.

Dapitan Bay

A stretch of clean beach on the northern section of the poblacion, with sunsets more beautiful than the fabled ones at Manila Bay. Perfectly safe for swimming (water depth is gradual with no undertow).

Barangay Daro

From here, one gets a breathtaking view of the Sulu Sea north and east of the city stretching as far as the municipality of Sibutad, Zamboanga del Norte and Balingao in Misamis Occidental.

Holy Rosary Cathedral

Erected by the Spanish friars sometime in 1895, records show that the original altar was designed by Dr. Jose Rlzal, the sketch of the altar was patterned after that of San Ignacio Church in Manila.

Sta. Cruz Marker

Spot where migrating Boholanos from the Visayas landed on and planted the cross for Christianity on May 3, 1905.

City Hall Building

The same edifice which was erected and inaugurated by then Governor General of Mindanao John J. Pershing on July 1, 1913 wherein Dipolog was formerly declared as a municipality.

Tulwanan Village (Old Town Site of Dipolog)

Sitio Tulwanan in Barangay Lugdungan is the original settlement of Dipolog's early inhabitants, the Subanons. About 6 kilometers from the city proper and along the Dipolog River which the Subanons used to transport their products to trading posts and markets in the early days. To preserve its historical significance and for the younger generation to see and reflect on their cultural history, the City Government constructed replicas of Subanen houses in the site.

3003 Steps to Linabo Peak

Concrete steps winding along tunnel of verdant trees lead to a panoramic vista of sky, plains, and sea and a spectacular view of the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan, This is Dipolog's highest elevation point - 486 meters above sea level. The 14 Stations of the Cross punctuate the way up. At the peak is a community chapel for prayer and contemplation.

Magsaysay Park

A landscaped park providing an oasis of greenery right in the center of Dipolog City. It is a converging point for many people from all walks of life for simple strolling and relaxing. The hectare-sized lot just beside the City Hall and fronting the Holy Rosary Cathedral is an ideal place for small outdoor meetings in a natural setting.

OlSCA Pamansalan Forest Park

These 64 hectares of lush forests, flora and fauna give trekkers an unforgettable experience with nature at its best, and is a showcase of nature conservation and ecological balance.  It is home to exotic birds as a declared bird sanctuary.

Dipolog Beaches

A velvet stretch of fine gray sand, exquisite solitude as the fiery sun dies in the horizon to the onset of twilight, broken only by the distant cries of fishermen returning to shore with the day's catch.

Sungkilaw Falls - This splendid gift of nature gives one a wonderful view of the clear foamy water that gushes down from a seemingly dry formation of huge pockmarked rocks.

Cogon EcoTourism Park

So named after its entrance location in the hinterlands of Barangay Cogon, this environmental rest area park and forest preserve stretches into the neighboring Municipality of Polanco and covers a total land area of 344 hectares.

An upshot of massive tree-planting activities regularly undertaken since its establishment as a reforestation area way back 1958, the area now hosts a range of mature planted trees and other important floral varieties. Within the park's vast expanse also lies a 40-hectare natural forest that is home to at least ten documented rare fauna species such as the Philippine monkey, the Pigeon Dove, the Philippine Turtle Dove, the Monitor Lizard and fruit bats, among others.

Just a few meters from the park's entrance is located the Aviary, where visitors can catch a glimpse of exotic birds endemic to the area.

Further ahead is an exact replica of a typical Subanen Village where real Subanen tribesmen actually livie within the buffer zone of the project area in their colorful native costume and perform traditional Subanen dances and rituals for the benefit of interested visiting groups. This is also where visitors can witness Subanen women as they demonstrate the art of weaving baskets and other novelty items mainly from Nito vines.

In nearby Barangay, another natural wonder awaits visitors with the cool, cascading waters of Sungkilaw Falls.

Getting There

Visitors can reach the province of Zamboanga Del Norte via Dipolog City:

• By Air: From Manila, Cebu Pacific Air offers daily flights to Dipolog City, the capital of Zamboanga Del Norte. Traveling by air takes approximately an hour.
• By sea: There are ferries that offer transportation from Manila to Dipolog City. These ferries often take the Port of Pulauan in Dapitan City and from there one can take public transportations to get to the neighboring cities. The Strong Republic Nautical Highway (RORO) could also be taken. It takes less than 48 hours to get to Dipolog City.
• By land: Busses of the Rural Transit and the Evergood Trans Industries, Inc. travel to Dipolog City.
• From Dipolog Airport, go to the Dipolog Bus terminal. Travel time: 15-20 minutes.

Discovering the Beautiful Sindangan in Zamboanga del Norte

Sindangan is a first-class municipality located in Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines. It is the second most populous (second to the provincial capital that is Dipolog) and the fastest-growing municipality in the province, which has placed it under consideration to be given the status of a city, with economic growth enough to become one. In terms of tourism, the place has a lot to offer to locals and foreigners alike. If you are planning a trip to this beautiful place, here are some things to help you with creating your itinerary:

Attractions

Sindangan is known for having some old churches, with the most popular being the Saint Joseph the Worker church, which became a parish in 1935 under the Archdiocese of Zamboanga. Its first church building was constructed at the Saint Joseph College before it was moved to its current location. Aside from its churches, the place is also known for having great beaches, including the Pitogo Beach, Sevilleno Beach Resort and the Winschin Pool Resort.

Festivals and Food

The place celebrates several festivals all year round, and one of them is the Saint Joseph the Worker Town Fiesta, which happens on the first day of May each year. During the event, the townspeople honors Saint Joseph the Worker, who is their primary patron saint, serving as a role model for all fathers and laborers. He is considered fit as such, considering that the people of Sindangan are known as hard workers since the time before World War II. Another event to watch here is Siari’s Fiest Day, which happens every 3 rd Sunday of January to honor Sto. Nino de Cebu , where there is a grand fluvial procession at the eve of the feast. During the culmination of the event, there will be a procession of street dancers who compete for a certain prize. Other festivals are the Pasidungog Festival and the Linggo ng Sindangan, which is the municipality’s charter day that is observed from December 17 to 22.

As for the food here, it is said that Sindangan people offers the best seafood that will rock your appetite. One of the popular meals here is the kinilaw, which is prepared with raw fish fillets that are tender-soaked in the subtle sour sauce or the local coconut vinegar, making it so delicious. While there are different versions of kinilaw in the Philippines, you might find the one in this municipality the best of them all.

Things to Do

There are many enjoyable things to do in Sindangan, like spending a day in its beaches and savoring the delicious food it has to offer. If you want to discover the origins of the culture here, then you can meet with the Subanen people who are a substantial part of the populations of Zamboanga del Norte and del Sur.

How to Get There

There are airlines that fly from Manila to Dipolog , such as Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, even offering daily flights. From Dipolog, you can reach Sindangan by jeepney, van, bus or a hired motorcycle.

25 ZAMBOANGA CITY Tourist Spots & Things to Do

Whenever we’re asked what our favorite local destinations are, we always include Zamboanga City in the list. And almost always, we get a one-word follow-up question delivered with a lot of curiosity — “Why?”

In my circle of friends, I can count with my fingers those who have set foot in this corner of Mindanao. But what’s in Zamboanga? Why should you visit? As one of the biggest urban hubs in the Philippines in terms of land area (and population), Zamboanga City is brimming with attractions that are worth going the distance.

Zamboanga City’s travel scene has been developing fast over the past few years. It is, after all, Region IX’s primary gateway. Tours are becoming more organized. Promotion of the city has been relentless, especially after travel restrictions have eased. Most tourists flock to the islands and the beaches, but the local food scene is steadily drawing in more visitors, too.

The team has been to Asia’s Latin City five times already, but each time we felt like there was still more to see and discover! On our most recent trip, AirAsia , which now flies daily to Zamboanga, toured us around the city and we got to visit some attractions for the first time!

If you’re curious about what awaits you there, here’s a full rundown of the things to do and places to visit in Zamboanga City.

SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS

Pink beach (sta. cruz grande island).

Off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula lies an island that, when kissed by the sun, glows with a natural rosy blush. Hailed by the National Geographic as one of the World’s 21 Best Beaches in 2017, Pink Beach is Zamboanga City’s most popular tourist attraction.

To manage your expectations, the pink hue isn’t vivid or bright. From afar, the sandy shore looks like the usual white beach, but the closer you get, the pink taint becomes more apparent. The sand’s pale pink tint is the result of the weathering of the red organ-pipe corals (tubipora musica) that were brought to the shore by the waves.

Punctuating the southeastern side of the peninsula, Zamboanga City’s Paseo del Mar is the main jump-off point to the island and its Pink Beach. Visitors can hire a tricycle from the city center to Santa Cruz Island Ferry Terminal in Paseo del Mar. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes.

Because the number of visitors is strictly regulated, you need to register in advance before going. Registration and boat service start at 7:00 AM. Overnight stay is not permitted and only day tours are allowed.

Boat fee is P1000, good for up to 10 passengers. If your group is smaller, you’ll still need to pay the same amount.

Mangroves Boat Tour (Sta. Cruz Grande Island)

While Grande Santa Cruz Island allures with its pink radiance, its beauty goes beyond appearances. It also keeps a trove of natural wonders. On the other side of the island is a lagoon fully adorned with mangroves, nourishing wildlife and promoting biodiversity.

The lagoon actually dominates the whole island, occupying most of the surface. The best way to explore it is to take a guided boat tour. As your boatman paddles, a guide will lead you to a number of spots to explain just how important it is to protect this site. You’ll learn about the types of mangroves and meet upside-down jellyfish . Don’t worry, they’re not dangerous at all. They’re virtually stingless. But please don’t get them out of the water.

To join a lagoon boat tour, tell the boatmen that brought you to Pink Beach that you want to explore the lagoon. They will take you to a small community near the entrance to the lagoon. This transfer will cost you an additional P200.

Here, you’ll be transferring to a smaller “yellow boat.” Rental of each yellow boat costs P300, good for 2 passengers. Any given boat will be accompanied by 2 paddlers, each from a different family. (It’s a way of making sure everyone in the community benefits from the program.)

Tour guide fee is P300. A tour guide can lead up to 5 boats max. You can team up with other boats so you could split the guide fee.

Important: you can only arrange a tour before 12 noon! They won’t be accepting any booking beyond that time. Please follow the rules and regulations when exploring. The Grande Santa Cruz Island, together with the smaller Little Santa Cruz Island, is a protected area.

Vinta Rowing

The vinta is the traditional outrigger boat that is common in Mindanao, especially in the areas of southern Mindanao, Sulu archipelago, and the Zamboanga peninsula. It is famous for its vividly colorful rhombic sail, adding a splash of color to the waters of Sulu Sea.

The vinta plays an important role in the livelihood of the locals — economy, trade, and transportation. It is historically used as a fishing vessel. Today, it also serves as a mode of transportation for people, as a cargo vessel to deliver products/goods, and as a tourist attraction.

If you want to experience rowing or riding a vinta , you may charter one in any of the barangays along the city’s coastlines or you can do it when you visit Grande Santa Cruz Island.

Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar

Sitting northwest of Santa Cruz Grande Island, Little Santa Cruz Island is like a quick dash of paradise off the coast of the Zamboanga peninsula. The most recognizable feature of the island is the sandbar trailing on the easternmost point.

Although the island is fringed with fair sand, it is a mixture of fine and broken shells and corals. There are small lagoons, but tourists are not allowed to venture beyond sandbar. The surrounding waters are mostly deep, sea-grass-covered, and are not recommended for leisure swimming.

Visitors are only allowed to stay here for 10 minutes. But if you really want to make a stop here, a detour will cost you an additional P200.

ONCE ISLAS CRUISE (11 Islands)

A steadily rising tourist attraction is Once Islas (11 Islands), a string of islands and islets off the eastern coast of Zamboanga City. Not all islands are open to the public, but those that are accessible are great for swimming, sunbathing, and further exploring. There are designated snorkeling spots for those who want to take a peek into the underwater scene. Buh-Buh, Bisaya-Bisaya, Baung-Baung, and Sirommon are those that are accessible to the public.

The islands are only open for day trips. A limit of 200 visitors per day is implemented, so advance registration is required. You need to book online through [email protected] one week before your planned visit. Guidelines and steps will be emailed upon booking inquiry. Walk-ins are not entertained.

The jump off point is the Panubigan Ferry Terminal, roughly 1.5 hours from the city center.

Bisaya-Bisaya Island

Bisaya-Bisaya Island is a two-faced island, with steep cliffs on one side but blanketed with fine white sand on the other. Its northern face is where you’ll find the sandy stretch, fringed with palm trees. From above, the beach area resembles a boomerang on patch of grass. In between the trees are a few huts where you could stay and enjoy coconut juice, which is for sale on site.

Not too far away is a smaller islet often dubbed a child of Bisaya-Bisaya. This one’s generally more rocky and jagged. It features a small natural pool that gets filled by the waves at high tide.

Our guide Sirna shared with us a folk tale about two fishermen, a Christian and a Muslim, who once stumbled upon the island that blessed them with fish. But the two did not agree on how they would divide the ocean bounty — since one of them caught much more than the other — so they decided to go their own way. According to our guide, “bisaya-bisaya” is the local term for “kanya-kanya” or not sharing.

Baung-Baung Island

Baung-Baung Island is an almost rectangular island whose southwestern end shimmers with its fine white sand. It’s usually the stop right after Bisaya-Bisaya because of its proximity to it. In fact, Baung-Baung has a trekking trail that will lead you to a viewpoint that affords a majestic view of Bisaya-Bisaya and the other islets around it. On Google Maps, it’s marked “Baong Island”.

Sirommon Island

Sirommon Island is the usual lunch stop for boat tours; thanks to its spacious huts. It also has a wide strip of white sand and a sand bar, which is probably why most tourists spend the most time here. It’s also a great snorkeling stop.

Buh-Buh Island

Buh-Buh Island is best known for its beachfront mosque. Pre-pandemic, tours would make a stop here, but we’re not sure whether or not it’s still the case. We didn’t set foot here, though.

ZAMBOANGA CITY HERITAGE TOUR

El Museo de Zamboanga should be the first stop of any city tour. It offers a quick overview of the history and heritage of Zamboanga City, which explains much of what you’ll see as you visit more places through the day.

It has two galleries — the main gallery, housing the permanent exhibition, and another one for the temporary or seasonal exhibits. It showcases historical items and artifacts that narrate the colorful story of the region, its people, and its rich culture from the pre-colonial period to the more recent decades. The museum is nestled in the extensive Pasonanca Park.

Pasonanca Park & Scout Limbaga Campsite

Opened to the public in the 1910s, the Pasonanca Park is another green space for nature lovers and those who want to have a quick escape from the much busier city center. It houses the Camp Limbaga (Scout Limbaga Campsite) with a convention center, an amphitheater, an aviary, a floral garden and butterfly sanctuary, and public swimming pools — a kiddie pool, a natural pool, and an Olympic-size pool.

Probably the most famous attraction is the Pasonanca Treehouse. Constructed in 1960, it was originally built to serve as the Youth Citizenship Training Center. Today, visitors come here to take photos, but if you want to spend more time here, you can rent the treehouse too! Make sure to contact the LGU’s admin first to coordinate. You can buy food along the way from the sidestreet restaurants, stores, and BBQ stands.

Climaco Freedom Park

Formerly known as Abong-Abong Park, the Climaco Freedom Park is situated about seven kilometers north of the city center. Named after the late Zamboanga City Mayor Cesar Climaco, a local hero who was assassinated in 1984. The park also serves as his final resting place.

The freedom park is a popular weekend destination for the locals and one of the rising tourist spots, attracting nature lovers of all ages. It encompasses a garden, Chrislam Pool, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts campsite, Heroes Hill, and the Holy Hill, which is the endpoint of the Station of the Cross trek.

Some of the things to do here are swimming, hiking, trekking, biking, having a picnic, and going on a religious pilgrimage and retreat.

Fort Pilar Shrine and Museum

Also called Fortaleza del Pilar , Fort Pilar dates back to the 17th century, originally serving as a Spanish military defense post. Fast forward to the present, this bastioned fort is a major historical landmark of the city. Recognized as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973, the fort underwent restorations and is regularly maintained by the city.

It cradles an open-air 18th-century Marian shrine — Our Lady of the Pillar — with an altar and stone seating for the devotees who want to pray and reflect. On Sundays, monoblock chairs dot the area for the regular mass.

The fort also houses a regional branch of the National Museum of the Philippines, the bells of the Sanctuary to the Lady of the Pillar, and a fountain. The fort is located near Paseo del Mar and Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology.

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

Tucked within the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology , just a stone’s throw from Fort Pilar and Paseo del Mar, the bird sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers, particularly bird watchers.

The vast mangrove-fringed pond is a protected area, where great white egrets breed and thrive. Other migratory birds also frequent the site.

Two designated view decks are accessible for those who want to spend some time here. The best time for birdwatching is early morning or late afternoon, while the best months are November to March.

Paseo del Mar

Just across Fort Pilar is Paseo del Mar , a waterfront recreational park facing the Basilan Strait. Aside from the souvenir shops, local food vendors, and eateries, the newly renovated park added a children’s playground and a skatepark, making it a favorite hang-out place for the locals.

It caters not just to families, friends, and couples but also to those who want to spend their alone time or me-time. Several tables and chairs are arranged for those who like to go food tripping here. Local dishes, snacks, and street fare are available. Benches also line the boardwalk, where sunset revelers lounge to watch the sunlight paints the sky with a beautiful gradient of colors as the day turns into night.

Canelar Barter Trade Center

OK, first things first, despite the name, you need cash when shopping here so please put down whatever it is you plan to trade. 🤣 The name is a nod to the trading system of exchanging goods that was widely practiced in this part of the world back in the day.

Today, however, it functions just like any other shopping center. Time to brush up on your haggling skills when you dive into this shopping paradise, tempting you with its cheap imported offerings from the neighboring countries Indonesia and Malaysia.

Alongside local products, a wide array of imported goods are sold here — souvenirs, food, clothes, fabrics, gadgets, accessories, among others. Get a hold of your favorite Malaysian or Indonesian chocolates, coffee brands (Old Town Cofee and others), and milk tea (teh tarik) at relatively cheaper prices. Lastly, don’t forget to pause and breathe. Good? Okay. Let the second wave of haggling and negotiating begin!

Zamboanga City Hall

Smack at the very heart of the city center, where well-preserved colonial structures are clustered, the Zamboanga City Hall is considered one of the important heritage sites in the city.

Recognized as a National Historical Site, it was originally used as the official residence of the US Military Governor of the then Moro Province. Later on, it became the government seat of the former Zamboanga Province. It has been serving as the administrative seat of Zamboanga City since 1937. Rizal Park or Plaza Rizal is just across the city hall.

Yakan Weaving Village

While in Zamboanga City, don’t pass up the opportunity to take home the best tangible souvenirs you can buy — products made from the exquisite Yakan fabric, which takes time to finish, depending on the intricacy of the designs and patterns. The Yakan are the traditional inhabitants of Basilan and other areas in this part of Mindanao.

Here in Zamboanga City, you’ll find the Yakan Weaving Village , which harbors local shops selling traditional products and practical accessories including bags, purses, pencil cases, and even yards of Yakan fabrics. You can also watch (or try for yourself!) the traditional process of Yakan weaving.

ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP

Curacha (spanner crabs).

Nope. We are not talking about the Filipino femme fatale movie character played by Rossana Roces nor actual cockroaches! Curacha means cockroach in the Chavacano language, but — before you lose your appetite — we’re not asking you to go full Fear Factor here. Instead, we’re inviting you to have a taste of the most mouth-watering crustaceans that Zamboanga has to offer — spanner crabs! (It got its name because of its spiky appearance.)

So what is it exactly? We are talking about Zamboanga’s gastronomic gem. Curacha looks like the love child of a huge crab and a hairy lobster. Known for its consistent red appearance, whether raw or cooked, it is sought after because it’s meatier than other crabs and packs more flavor. Thankfully, they thrive in the bosom of the Sulu Sea.

Your trip won’t be complete without trying a dish or two. Alavar’s Seafood Restaurant is famous for its curacha dish cooked in its equally popular specialty sauce.

If you want to take some home, head over to Aderes Flea Market in Guiwan, where you can purchase fresh fresh, uncooked curacha at a lower price. Lobsters are also available!

Moro Cuisine

The Filipino Muslims, also known as the Moros, take pride in their distinct cuisine. Although sharing some similarities with other parts of the country in terms of seasonings and ingredients like garlic, onions, and ginger, what make Moro cuisine different are other spices like turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime — which are more commonly used by our ASEAN neighbors. It also utilizes burnt or blackened coconut meat in some dishes.

Some of the Moro faves are beef randang, piaparan, bakas, chicken pyanggang, pater, dodol, and lukatis. If you want to sample several dishes in one sitting, the latal is your best choice. It is a platter of some native dishes of the region.

Both Bay Tal Mal (at SM Mindpro) and Dennis Coffee Garden (near the airport) have latal on their menu.

Knickerbocker

After a sumptuous native Moro food fest, end it “sweetly” with a tall serving of Zamboanga’s iconic dessert — the knickerbocker.

A what? A hybrid of fruit salad and halo-halo, Zamboanga’s knickerbocker usually combines slices of fruits, gelatin, and shaved ice. It is then doused in milk and topped with a scoop of ice cream.

The Palmeras , also known as Hacienda de Palmeras , is said to be the home of the original knickerbocker and is credited for inventing this refreshing dessert.

Satti and Street Food

Of course! Any TPT trip isn’t complete without delving into the street food scene! These everyday accessible munchies tell a lot about the place, its people, and its culture. You can find street food anywhere, especially in busy areas like the public market and around the city hall.

Paseo del Mar has its share of street grubs and snacks. R.T. Lim Boulevard also hosts a number of street food peddlers. Some of the streetfood choices are satay or “ihaw-ihaw”, pastil, sicalang, and lokot-lokot. But our favorite is mi goreng!

But perhaps the most iconic of all is satti , a breakfast favorite among locals. Satti is usually skewered beef or chicken, grilled and then served half-dipped in a bowl of spicy sauce with rice shaped into cubes!

When we asked the locals where to find the best satti in the city, all fingers pointed at Jimmy’s Satti . Unfortunately, we weren’t able to try it, but we had our helping from Dennis Coffee Garden, which also serves satti.

OTHER WORTHY ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

Zamboanga hermosa festival.

The city’s annual celebration of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is dedicated to its patron saint La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar . It’s a month-long festivity that takes place in October; the first two weeks of which are usually packed with activities, peaking in the second week, particularly on the feast day of the patron saint, which is on the 12th day of October.

One of the main events is the Regatta de Zamboanga , a vinta race participated by hundreds of vinta owners and operators. All the participants are residents of Zamboanga.

Taluksangay Mosque

If you trace the roots of Islam in Zamboanga, they will most likely lead you to the coastal village of Taluksangay on the southeast coast of the city. Here, just next to the barangay hall, stands a historic mosque. It is believed that it is here that Islam began to spread in the peninsula.

Constructed in 1885 by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno, the Taluksangay Mosque is said to be the oldest in Western Mindanao and the first in Zamboanga Peninsula. The mosque’s most recognizable features are the two minarets.

This off-route destination is mostly visited by Muslims and history buffs.

Location: Taluksungay Mosque, Barangay Taluksungay, Zamboanga City Opening Hours: Visitors can enter the mosque anytime EXCEPT during prayer times, which happen five times a day. It’s best to drop by the barangay hall, which is located just beside the mosque. Please observe visiting rules and protocols.

Merloquet Falls

Located about two hours away from the city center, near the boundary with Zamboanga Sibugay in the north and Zamboanga del Norte in the west, the magnificent two-tiered Merloquet Falls is regarded as one of the most beautiful not only in the region but in the country. The most photographed is the wide terraced drop, creating magical, intricate textured cascades instead of just a smooth straight drop.

The path leading to the falls is quite developed with concrete roads and a designated parking area for vehicles. On foot, the trek to the falls entails many cemented pathways and steps. Nonetheless, this may still be quite difficult for those who are physically challenged.

There are several swimming areas, but mind your steps because some parts are slippery. The best time to visit is in the wet/rainy season.

Learn Chavacano

Zamboanga is often called Asia’s Latin City because of the heavy Hispanic influences. And it’s most apparent in its most dominant language — Chavacano (or Chabacano), the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It is like a combination of Spanish and local languages, and it’s quite fascinating!

Why not learn Chavacano while in Zamboanga? Start from the basics such as greetings and useful phrases that you can use while in the city. It is also a good way to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture.

How to Get to Zamboanga City

Philippines is really the “Pearl of the Orient”. Its is blessed with rich natural resources, scenic, cultural and heritage spot, really full of history and Zamboanga City is one of the place. The Zamboanga City Pasonanca Natural Park is currently nominated as an Asean Heritage Park should it be finally declared as one it would be another spot in the city worth mentioning. The place encompasses the protected areas of the Pasonanca park which is a watershed and a virgin forest rich in fauna and flora.
