Can I modify the trip's length by spending more or less time at certain locations?

Absolutely! We personalize all our clients’ trips to fit their exact tastes and needs. You can add days at locations that you’d like to explore and spend more time at. Or leave out certain areas that don’t interest you as much. Discuss your travel goals with our Vacation Advisors who make sure that your trip fits your needs and budget.

Where do I stay on my trip?

We partner with many hotels across the country that offer a variety of service levels and unique experiences. Choosing a hotel is based on local availability and personal preference, and our Insiders will help you find the perfect place to rest your head so that you can have the best experience possible.

I see some hotels referred to as Comfort, Boutique, or Deluxe. What is that?

On some of our trips, you’ll see that we categorize our hotel rooms by Comfort, Boutique, and Deluxe class, which generally translates into the traditional 3-, 4- or 5-star designation (equivalent to Sheraton and Fairmont). However, sometimes we use the same hotel for more than one category and distinguish the room by size, floor level or view.

Our Comfort Level hotels include our favorite 3 star hotels, in great locations and with excellent service.

Our Boutique Level hotels provide amazing value for clients wanting something more upscale but not at the price of a top-end 5 star resort. These are some of our favorites because of the character and unique charm that you won't find at the average chain hotel.

In Deluxe Level hotels, it's likely you'll be staying at one of the iconic Canadian Fairmont Hotels in a room with a view. Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 20th century, these hotels are luxurious and full of history – ensuring an experience you'll never forget.

How much does my trip cost?

All our trips are personalized to fit our clients’ schedule and budget. The price of your trip generally depends on the travel season, train service, accommodations, and the sightseeing tours you take. When you request a quote you’ll be provided with the detailed information you need

Am I on the train the whole time?

Most of our trips include stops to get off the train to explore Canada’s beautiful locations, national parks and unique cities. However, if you’re keen to maximize your time onboard, we’ll pair you up with the perfect train experience.

What are the features of Business Class on VIA Rail's Corridor Train?

Business Class includes meals on the train (breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day). These meals and complimentary beverages are served at your seat. Business Class seats are wide and comfortable with plenty of legroom. Another feature of Business Class is that you receive access to the in-station business class lounge before you board the train.

Can the guided tours in both cities be tailored for seniors with limited mobility?

This itinerary allows you to choose your preferred activities and excursions in Montreal and Quebec City. Options include small group bus tours, walking tours, and food tours. One thing to note is that there are hills, cobblestone streets, and uneven surfaces in the historic parts of Montreal and Quebec City.

In the heart of the Laurentians, discover one of Quebec's cycling gems: Le P'tit Train du Nord. This cycling route, built along a former Canadian Pacific railroad that linked Montreal to Mont-Laurier, offers an ideal cycling experience, combining nature, history and gentle gradients that give you the chance to enjoy the beauty of the Laurentians as you ride.

Between Mont-Laurier and Saint-Jérôme, passing through Nominingue, Mont-Tremblant and Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, you'll discover picturesque paths along the edge of the Laurentian peaks, ancestral stations specially designed for cyclists, and flora and fauna that will accompany your pedal strokes every step of the way.

The many small villages along the route of the P'tit Train will allow you to sample the best of local produce while travelling far from the traffic. Make your own way to the Laurentians!

Voyager sur les rails entre Toronto et Vancouver, c’est accepter de se déplacer à un autre rythme et au milieu d’un cadre figé dans un autre temps.

Où est-il possible de rencontrer un entrepreneur originaire de l’Inde lisant dans les lignes de votre main (« Vous aurez une longue vie et vous serez riche. ») ? Un Vancouvérois passionné du cinéaste Jean-Luc Godard qui vous parle avec ferveur de La Chinoise (1967) et de Drôles de guerres (2023), son ultime opus, sur fond d’épinettes noires ? Deux Albertains à casquettes tout à coup silencieux lorsque l’auteur de ces lignes leur annonce qu’il exerce le métier de journaliste ? Tout cela n’est que banalité dans la voiture-restaurant du Canadien. Ce train mythique en activité depuis 1955 reliant Toronto et Vancouver, franchissant 4466 km de choses tranquilles, quatre jours et quatre nuits entre plaines et montagnes, forêts et banlieues anonymes. Et la plupart du temps sans réseau cellulaire ni accès à Internet.

Parmi les 4,1 millions de passagers que VIA Rail Canada a transportés en 2023, 61 670 d’entre eux ont emprunté le Canadien pour se rendre dans les deux grandes villes du pays, ou quelque part le long du trajet, par exemple à Winnipeg. C’est là qu’une partie du personnel s’assurant du confort des voyageurs quitte cet engin d’acier (et de cuir brun…) pour être remplacé jusqu’à sa dernière destination.

Faire l’expérience de ce train unique, autant pour son charme désuet que pour ses commodités étonnantes — prendre sa douche dans une cabine au balancement irrégulier, ça ne s’oublie pas ! —, c’est aussi accepter les carences du transport de passagers sur rail au Canada. Elles trouvent leur origine dans la fondation de VIA Rail en 1977, alors que le Canadien National, jadis société d’État, s’est délesté du service des passagers pour se concentrer sur les marchandises. Le Canadien Pacifique l’imitera l’année suivante. Depuis cette époque, les produits ont préséance sur les personnes au moment des déplacements, et les retards ne cessent de s’accumuler. De même que les réductions budgétaires, dont celles survenues sous le règne du premier ministre Brian Mulroney, entre 1984 et 1993. En 1982, VIA Rail comptait 7,2 millions de voyageurs, mais ils n’étaient plus que 3,6 millions en 1992.

Alors, pourquoi opter pour ce mode de transport qui, dans sa version canadienne, semble figé dans un passé lointain ? Et ce, surtout en comparaison des meilleurs élèves (l’Europe, le Japon et la Chine) et même des pires, comme les États-Unis, dont le premier TGV, entre Las Vegas et Los Angeles, est prévu pour 2028. D’abord pour cette impression délicieuse d’anachronisme, de pied de nez à un monde où tout va trop vite et où tout doit être planifié.

Devine qui vient dîner

D’ailleurs, que vous soyez seul ou en couple, et surtout si vous occupez les voitures avec couchettes (de la chambre personnelle avec salle de bains à la cabine individuelle, en passant par la section de type dortoir), il y en a pour tous les goûts. Les plats proposés à bord vous feront découvrir le pays sous un nouvel angle. À votre arrivée à la voiture-restaurant, les serveurs vous assignent une place, dictés par le souci de remplir les tables pour une organisation efficace. Vous rêviez de solitude ou d’intimité ? Vous aurez tout le reste du trajet pour le faire. À l’heure des repas, les chances sont fortes de vous retrouver avec un intellectuel allemand dénigrant la télévision ou un couple d’Américains réticents à critiquer certaines politiques de leur pays (deux faits vécus !). D’ailleurs, avec son succulent menu pouvant satisfaire les carnivores, les amateurs de poissons et les végétariens, vous serez rassasiés à défaut de toujours bien nourrir votre esprit de propos édifiants.

D’autres occasions demeurent possibles pour le faire, soit devant un casse-tête — minimum 1000 morceaux ! — offert aux voyageurs désoeuvrés ou sous le dôme panoramique montrant les beaux paysages de l’itinéraire. C’est particulièrement le cas en Alberta et en Colombie-Britannique, ou, alors, pendant la nuit pour admirer le ciel étoilé.

L’ambassadeur sur les rails

Les voyageurs les plus chanceux pourraient croiser Jason Shron, président de Rapido Trains, une entreprise concevant des trains miniatures. Ce passionné du monde ferroviaire établi en Ontario a même construit dans son sous-sol une version grandeur nature d’une ancienne voiture de passagers de VIA Rail. Pour des raisons familiales, mais surtout parce que tous les prétextes sont bons pour se déplacer sur chemin de fer, Jason Shron est un habitué du Canadien , surtout entre Toronto et Winnipeg.

« L’an dernier, j’ai fait l’itinéraire trois fois, se souvient l’habile bricoleur. Ce sont les employés qui ont attiré l’attention des autres passagers pour souligner que j’en étais à mon quarantième voyage — je ne les avais jamais comptés. Tout le monde a applaudi ! » En effet, VIA Rail ne pourrait trouver meilleur ambassadeur que cette encyclopédie vivante de l’évolution du matériel roulant de la société d’État. Demandez-lui le nom d’un modèle, sa décoration, ses trajets, et il vous répondra avec moult détails.

Cette passion, qui remonte à l’enfance, n’a jamais fléchi. Jason Shron aimerait tant que ses compatriotes la partagent, malgré toutes les failles qu’il constate lui-même à propos de VIA Rail, dont, bien sûr, les retards et le moins grand nombre de villes desservies. En parlant du Canadien , il ne tarit pas d’éloges, autant sur la qualité de la nourriture que sur le décor chargé de nostalgie, en passant par les rencontres impromptues avec des gens d’ici comme d’ailleurs. « Je ne connais pas de plus belle façon de découvrir ce pays, observe-t-il. Vous ne survolez pas le Canada, vous le traversez en plein coeur, et vous le faites au milieu d’un véritable microcosme de notre société. »

Comment imagine-t-il l’avenir de ce mode de transport au Canada ? « Ça ressemble en ce moment à un match de football politique. Et ce qui me désole encore plus, c’est de voir que l’on trouve des milliards de dollars pour construire des pipelines et si peu pour développer le train de passagers », est-il d’avis. Jason Shron se fera un plaisir de vous en dire davantage si vous le croisez lors de votre prochain périple à bord du Canadien .
