Tampa Tourist Attractions: The 25 Most Instagrammable Locations In Tampa Bay

If you ask me where we should eat lunch, I’m going to tell you to find an aesthetically pleasing place with a lot of natural light. (I never claimed to be an easy date, okay?) There’s so much debate about whether visiting a place solely  for Instagram is a vapid thing to do, but I’m firmly in the “live and let live” camp. Even if you visit a restaurant or store because it looks great on the ‘gram, you’ll likely find something you love about it — which is one of my favorite things about blogging. There are plenty of places in town that I love that aren’t exactly Instagram worthy, like Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, and

Given my love for being facey and leaving my house solely to take pictures, I felt it was time to rank my favorite Insta spots in the area. Whether you’re in Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights, St. Pete, Wesley Chapel, downtown Tampa or anywhere else in the Bay area, I’ve got you covered when it comes to the most Instagrammed spots in Tampa.  For all my people who want to explore and spice up their feeds at the same time, I’ve got the places for you. Read on to learn more about my favorite places to take an Instagram picture in Tampa Bay, one of the most beautiful cities in the United States.

1. OXFORD EXCHANGE  // 420 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to read a book each week. Unfortunately, I’ve been failing miserably. 😅 It’s really hard to find the time, but I’m going to try to start up again. Any book recommendations? 📚 ⠀ — I’ve got a post up on AYANALAGE.com about whether buying a DSLR is worth it. Even though I have a Canon 60D, most of my pictures (like this one) are taken on an iPhone by my #InstagramHusband. 😛⠀ — Hiring a professional photographer, buying a high-end camera, or just sticking to an iPhone: which is best for YOU? If you don’t know the answer, today’s post will help! #linkinbio • • • • • #tampafashionblogger #choosetampa #lovetampa #floridablogger #tampabae #tampacollective #pursuepretty #thehappynow #tampablogger #bloggerbabes #blackgirlswhoblog #melaninbloggers #oxfordexchange #womenwithstyle #tampablogger #ontheblog #imsobloggingthis A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on Apr 13, 2018 at 5:06am PDT

Yes, it lives up to the hype. Oxford Exchange is almost aggressively Instagram-friendly — there are photo opportunities at every turn — but I find myself discovering something new every time I visit, given that there’s a wide variety of shops and a gorgeous restaurant. Make a brunch reservation — or show up on your own. Either way, it’s worth the wait. Bonus: it’s directly across the street from the gorgeous Henry B. Plant museum.

Ciccio has always provided good food — Fresh Kitchen, Sweet Soul, Daily Eats, Green Lemon and Ciccio Cali are top-notch — but in recent years, the restaurant group has also given us some fire Instagram backdrops. They’ve created a trend of healthy, delicious food in Tampa, and I’m a fan.

3. BUTTERMILK PROVISIONS // 2653 Bruce B Downs Blvd, Wesley Chapel

#FridayIntroductions: Hey, y’all. I’m a 25-year-old gal who lives in Tampa with my sweet husband, Vagner. I met him when I was 15 and I’ve been swooning ever since. 😜 – I started my career in print journalism and have done a lot since then! Right now, I’m working as a digital content writer, which is a lot of fun. – If you want to see me light up, we should chat about Jesus, social justice, longform journalism, mental healthcare, body image, or whether a hot dog is a sandwich. – Random things to know: My parents are my best friends, I’m freaked out by roller coasters and lobsters, my little sisters are twins, and I have been on C-SPAN. 🤣 – Now it’s your turn! How did you find my account, and why do you follow me? I can’t wait to learn more about you! Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater are great, but I’m always partial to Pasco because it’s home. Buttermilk is famous for their donuts, but the chalk wall fits pretty much every Instagram aesthetic. Tell Dylan and CJ that I sent you — and then order the lavender latte with almond milk.

Arguably one of the coolest spots in downtown St. Pete, Intermezzo finds a way to do it all. You can grab a cup of coffee or a cocktail in a minimalist space that makes me want to sell all of my stuff. (Me? Dramatic? Never.)

5. HYDE PARK VILLAGE // 744 S Village Cir, Tampa

A tragedy in less than 10 words: It’s #TacoTuesday, and I’m not at @bartacolife 😢🌮 A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on May 22, 2018 at 4:35pm PDT

I go to Hyde Park Village for the food and shopping and stay for the atmosphere! It has that perfect balance of quaintness and sophistication. Among my favorite spots is bartaco, which has a cute outside area that leads into an adorable courtyard with some of the best boutiques in town. You’re also surrounded by the Hyde Park Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places .

6. POSIE’S FLOWER TRUCK // Everywhere

As if I needed another reason to love #TampaBay, we finally visited @posiesflowertruck, and it was so much fun. ⠀ — Vagner was like, “We’re driving 40 minutes for flowers?” And I was like, “Duh.” Happy wife, happy life, right? 😉 ⠀ ⠀ — You buy flowers by the stem, and they make the bouquet in front of you and tie it up prettily. THE BEST. Check their Instagram to find out where they’ll be next! 💐 (Not sponsored, I’m just obsessed.) A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on Apr 12, 2018 at 2:55pm PDT

If you follow anyone from Tampa, you’ve likely seen a post or two about Posie’s. Not only is it a super cool concept — I say it’s like Chipotle, but for flowers — but owner Stephanie Newton is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.

7.  ARMATURE WORKS // 1910 N Ola Ave, Tampa

I don’t want to come on too strong, but I’m in love with this place. @armatureworks_tampa, can I have a spare key? Maybe an empty drawer, if it isn’t too much to ask? 😘💘😝 – Church at @watermarktampa + horchata lattes from @uniontpa made for the perfect Sunday, but I woke up exhausted today. I’m going to attempt to spend the day on the couch reading + journaling, but I’m not great at slowing down. – How do you make yourself relax? What does a perfect self-care day look like for you? A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on May 7, 2018 at 7:19am PDT

This place is an Insta aficionado’s dream! Amazing views everywhere, from the historic facade to the bustling interior halls full of foodie spots and local vendors. Pick a spot and snap a shot. You have plenty of outdoor activities to choose from, as well.

8. REVOLUTION ICE CREAM // 6701 N Florida Ave, Tampa

sharing my #nationalicecreamday post a day late 😝 loved getting to check out @revicecream + have an excuse to style my pieces from the new @modernmesh delicates collection! #ad the jewelry is dainty, perfect for layering and majorly affordable. local friends, you can check it out in person @ahaleyboutique! ☀️ A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on Jul 16, 2018 at 5:12pm PDT

I’m usually not an ice cream person — give me cake any day of the week, please — but Revolution Ice Cream is a game-changer. The ice cream is ridiculously good, and the space is smack-dab in the middle of Seminole Heights. It’s a perfect treat after a day of exploring.

9. STATION HOUSE // 260 1st Ave S, St. Petersburg

Bouquets in the air because we made it to the weekend! 🥂💐 Such a fun Friday in St. Pete. – So glad I made it out to my first @galgetaway event — I learned a ton + made some friends along the way. Thank you to @kahleanicolee and all of the sponsors who made today possible! – Anyone have any fun weekend plans?! We’ve got @brinkleyroberts’s wedding, church at @watermarktampa and a @johnmarkmcmillan + @ascendthehillband show on the calendar! ✨ A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on Apr 27, 2018 at 2:56pm PDT

Food, coffee, rooftop views, and a co-working space? It sounds too good to be true, but it’s all an option at Station House. After you take a picture on the roof, look for the “I Woke Up Like This” room.

10. MANDARIN HEIGHTS // 5901 N Florida Ave, Tampa

{SWIPE 🔛} I was like Alice in Wonderland last night at the influencer preview of @MandarinHeights, opening in Seminole Heights across from The Refinery THIS WEEKEND! 🙌🏼 We totally vibed with the art and style of the space, provided by @tada_artists/@mfs_artist and @lisagilmoredesign, and the cocktails were of course something to swoon over. My personal favorite was the Sofia Loren, a unique and refreshing blend of Fernet Branca, Pimento Dram, pineapple, lime, ginger, and fresh mint, and a personal favorite of its creator, too. You don’t want to miss out on this thriving hot spot, and p.s. Bodega will be joining the neighborhood right next door, so you can indulge and imbibe to your heart’s desire. ♥️ Thanks so much for hosting us! 📷: @nabbett ▫️ • • • • • #thisjenngirl #Tampablogger #Floridablogger #FLblogger #southernblogger #theeverydaygirl #communityovercompetition #petiteblogger #thatsdarling #darlingmovement #flashesofdelight #thehappynow #petitejoys #livethelittlethings #feelfreefeed #inspiremyinstagram #forkyeah #foodblogging #foodblogfeed #tryitordiet #igersTampa #TampaCollective #Tampafood #Tampafoodie #Tampaeats #TBeatsout #UnlockTampaBay A post shared by Jenn Thai | Tampa Food + Style (@thisjenngirl) on Jul 19, 2018 at 6:00pm PDT

Sure, you could drink a cocktail in your bathtub at home, but where’s the fun in that? Mandarin Heights is a new bar in Seminole Heights serving eclectic, tasty cocktails, and the vibe is cooler than cool.

11.  DEGAJE // 6027 Wesley Grove Blvd #101, Wesley Chapel

Zoom out on your map of Tampa and if you look real hard you’ll find Wesley Chapel. Nestled in this little town is the most darling daytime locale: Degaje. Equal parts coffee shop and trinket boutique, Degaje has been my secret weapon for many an Insta post.

12. SWEETFIELDS // 17250 Benes Roush Rd, Masaryktown

just a pocket full of sunshine A post shared by meg (@megggiebear) on May 19, 2018 at 1:45pm PDT

No matter how creative you claim to be on the ‘gram, you know you love a good flower shot. I haven’t had a chance to visit Sweetfields, but the sunflower pictures are unreal — and you get to experience small-town charm while you visit.

13.  BUDDY BREW COFFEE // 1605 W Snow Ave, Tampa / 420 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa

NEW BLOG POST: Imagine we’re on a coffee date as you read this, because I so wish we could have this conversation face-to-face. If you’re anything like me, you scroll through Instagram and end up jealous of anyone whose life seems perfect. 🌱 ⠀ When you’re producing content in hopes of building your personal brand, making life look good is a given. I’m often tasked with portraying an aesthetically pleased lifestyle, even though my day-to-day life isn’t smiling in natural light in full makeup. 🌱 ⠀ What does it even mean to be authentic online in 2018? Buddy Brew has the quintessential metropolitan coffee shop vibe, and the all-white aesthetic is something I can’t get enough of these days. They don’t just serve coffee, either — their pastries are out of this world!

14. ST. PETE MURALS // Everywhere

I think of this mural nearly every day 📷: @kathrynvarn A post shared by Ashley Dye (@ashpony) on May 14, 2018 at 10:28am PDT

St. Pete is known for a lot of things, but its art scene is vibrant and very much alive. Not only are the murals fantastic photo backdrops — they tell stories about the city and the people who live there.

15. SPARKMAN WHARF // 369 South 12th Street, Tampa

If you’re after an outdoorsy location that also provides good food and drink, you’ve got it all at Sparkman Wharf. With fare from Tampa’s most popular restaurants, bars and coffeeshops, you’ll be impressed by the wide selection of options. It’s also close to the Tampa Bay History Center for all the history buffs and Florida Aquarium for anyone who loves sea life — you can head over after enjoying the Wharf.

16. THE DON CESAR  // 3400 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach

Who can say no to a hotel that’s almost entirely pink? It’s right on the beach and seriously luxurious — even if you aren’t spending the night, walking around the Don’s lobby is an adventure in itself. It’s a beautiful, family-friendly resort that’s well worth the splurge.

17. THE HYPPO  // 627 Central Ave, St. Petersburg / 1600 E 8th Ave, Suite E100, Tampa / 702 S Village Cir, Tampa

In a peer-reviewed study published Wednesday, a scientist says eating a pineapple-mango popsicle is a foolproof way to improve your mood and make your taste buds happy.* ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ *I’m the scientist, this is the study, and you’re the peers who reviewed it. How they manage to fit so much charm into one little shop is beyond me, but I’m glad The Hyppo exists. I first discovered them in Gainesville, but the Hyde Park location is my favorite so far. There’s a lovely little nook that faces out towards the plaza, and you just haven’t done Hyde Park Village until you’ve topped off the night with one of their pops. Try the Blueberry Lavender and thank me later.

18. ICEBURG  //  449 Central Ave Suite 102, St. Petersburg

If you look closely you can see where Grace licked the ice cream before this photo was taken. If you live in FL I’m sure you know the struggle🍦 A post shared by Shannon Murphy (@heygirlitzshanman) on Aug 19, 2018 at 4:27pm PDT

I may not be the world’s biggest ice cream fan, but I am a fan of drama and being extra. IceBurg’s cones are basically me personified, and they also photograph well. You can’t beat it.

19. TAMPA THEATRE // 711 N Franklin St., Tampa

I’m a huge fan of cool murals and aesthetically pleasing restaurants, but my heart lies with culturally rich venues that also provide an awesome photo backdrop. The Tampa Theatre opened in 1926, and it still offers movies and plays, although live theater is on hold due to COVID-19.

20. TAMPA RIVERWALK  // Downtown Tampa

Our wedding anniversary is in January, but an impromptu trip to unplug and celebrate a little early is exactly what we both needed. 🥂 Love to love you, @vagnerlage! 📸: @breecogginsphotography A post shared by Ayana | AYANALAGE.com (@ayanagabriellelage) on Dec 4, 2017 at 1:19pm PST

If you want to see downtown Tampa, you’ve gotta do the Riverwalk. Look at our skyscrapers, the University of Tampa and the Hillsborough River at the same time. It’s perfect for a date night with that special someone. It’s also adjacent to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, if you want to indulge in some outdoor activities.

21. J.C. NEWMAN CIGAR COMPANY // 2701 N 16th St, Tampa

If you know me well, you know that I’m not a smoker, but I still appreciate the look of J.C. Newman Cigar Company, a place with a long, rich history in Tampa’s historic Ybor City. The brick background on the building’s exterior makes for a fantastic backdrop, and you’ll also get a chance to tour a museum if you buy tickets to the cigar factory.

22. LS ORGANICS  // 219 S Packwood Ave, Tampa

Real food is best enjoyed with real friends ✨ A post shared by LS Organics (@lsorganics) on Aug 17, 2018 at 8:31am PDT

Talk about off-the-beaten-path — I only heard about this sweet little shop because one of my friends visited and shared it on social media. LS stands for “life simplified,” and this health-food cafe is pretty much the definition of slow living.

23. BODEGA // 1120 Central Ave, St. Petersburg

*Stuffs face right after the food photos 😋@eatatbodega #JeannineEats A post shared by JEANNINE ROXAS ⭐️ (@jeannine.roxas) on Aug 16, 2018 at 4:39pm PDT

I’ve only visited Bodega once, but the food was so good that I stuffed my face before I could take any pictures. Luckily, my friend Jeannine snapped a fire shot that lets you see just how good it is.

24. BANDIT COFFEE CO. // 2662 Central Ave, St. Petersburg

🏳️‍🌈✨HAPPY PRIDE, ST. PETE!✨🏳️‍🌈 A post shared by Bandit Coffee Co. (@banditcoffeeco) on Jun 22, 2018 at 9:50am PDT

If you’re looking for a good cup of joe in St. Pete, Bandit is a must. Bonus: Posie’s Flower Truck is often parked outside of Bandit, so you can kill two birds with one stone. (Or get two posts in one day — whatever works.)

25. HALL ON FRANKLIN // 1701 N Franklin St, Tampa

Best lunch in town! Great food, amazing service, & one of a kind atmosphere! Literally the easiest thing you’ll have to do today😎 • •• ••• Lunch starts at 11!😋 🐠🍤🍱🍜🍪🍔🥪🍳🥗☕️🎶 📷— @meetatthebarre #hallonfranklin #firstfullservicefoodhall #mondaymotivation #happymonday #tampa #lunch A post shared by The Hall (@thehallonfranklin) on Jun 18, 2018 at 7:18am PDT

Located within walking distance of Armature Works, Tampa’s other food hall shouldn’t be overlooked. While Armature is more spacious, the dishes at the Hall on Franklin can’t be beat — and the aesthetic is perfect for your Instagram story.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to drop places I missed in the comments! One of my favorite spots that didn’t make the list: Bayshore Boulevard. We love it so much we got engaged there! As always, may the Instagram algorithm be ever in your favor. 😉

Thank you to all of the Instagrammers who gave me permission to embed their photos. Throw them a follow — you’re missing out if you aren’t already engaging with their content!

20 Fun Things To Do In Tampa You Shouldn’t Miss

Tampa riverwalk.

If you’re looking for free things to do in Tampa, the Tampa Riverwalk is a great place to start!

The Tampa Riverwalk runs along the Hillsborough River. It is a beautiful 2.6-mile pedestrian walkway starting downtown near the Channelside District. It then goes up to Waterworks Park in Tampa Heights.

Along the way, you’ll find public art, history, parks, hotels, and more Tampa attractions. A series of bronze busts and statues also line the walkway.

If you’re looking for free things to do in Tampa, the Tampa Riverwalk is a beautiful place to start!

Henry B. Plant Museum

Architecture and history buffs rejoice at this next Tampa, Florida attraction. The Henry B. Plant Museum is one of the more unique things to do in Tampa. The building is located downtown on the campus of the University of Tampa. It used to be the Tampa Bay Hotel.

The Tampa Bay Hotel was originally opened in 1891 by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant. It was one of the most affluent hotels in the entire state of Florida. Today, it is one of the best museums in Florida .

It’s now a National Landmark and a museum. The museum’s exhibits are centered around tourism from the Gilded Age in Tampa. You’ll see examples of the lifestyle of the affluent and famous guests.

Today, visitors can visit Tuesday through Sunday, with the exception of major holidays. During Christmastime, guests may attend the annual Victorian Christmas Stroll, hosted by the hotel. It’s one of the most unique things to do in Tampa.

The stunning architecture of the Henry B. Plant Museum. There is a lawn, trees, and gardens surrounding the brick building.

Tampa Theatre

The Tampa Theatre is certainly one of the most unique movie theaters you will ever visit. It’s easily one of the most fun things to do in Tampa!

If you have the time, you’ll definitely want to see a movie at this theater. The opulent interior by John Everson adds an old-world ambiance. It’s unlike any modern movie theater you’ve been to. That’s what makes it one of the coolest Tampa attractions.

Today, it runs as Tampa’s only non-profit movie palace. When the theater was threatened with closing, locals flocked to save it. Daily film showings range from international films, documentaries, and foreign flicks.

So you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see something while you’re visiting Tampa. The theatre also has a fully equipped stage. There’s always something special happening or playing there , so make sure not to miss out on one of the best activities in Tampa.

The marquis of the Tampa Theatre that is all lit up.

The Hindu Temple of Florida

One of the best places to visit in Tampa is the Hindu Temple of Florida. In 1983, a group that practiced Sanatana dharma immigrated to Tampa. They felt they had no real place to practice. So they came together to renovate a small plot of land that contained a modest house.

The group spent years fundraising so they could build their sacred temple. Now, you can visit this incredibly beautiful attraction in Tampa. When you do visit, please remember to be respectful. It is a place of worship, so treat it with respect.

The temple hosts a bevy of activities beyond religious services. That includes classes on public speaking, yoga, ancient Indian scripture, and SAT preparation.

You can visit the Hindu Temple every day. It’s one of the more unique things to do in Tampa and we highly suggest checking it out.

The towering Hindu Temple of Florida. There are intricate carvings and the sky is really blue behind it.

Curtis Hixon Park

If you’re looking for things to do in Tampa this weekend, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Curtis Hixon Park. You can find the park in the heart of downtown Tampa. It’s along the Hillsborough River, right on the way. It’s near other popular Tampa attractions, like the Tampa Museum of Art and the STRAZ Center.

The park is almost always hosting activities in Tampa. From food truck rallies, live concerts, and even inflatable playgrounds for children and adults. If you’re wondering where to go in Tampa, Curtis Hixon Park is a great option.

Even if there isn’t an event happening, you’ll want to spend some time at the park. There is a small dog park, a jungle gym for kids, and stunning views. Curtis Hixon Park is a great place for a picnic lunch as well. It’s one of the best free things to do in Tampa.

The swaying palm trees at dusk in Curtis Hixon Park, overlooking the downtown Tampa skyline.

The Florida Aquarium

One of the best Tampa attractions is to pay a visit to the Florida Aquarium. Located in the Channelside District downtown, the aquarium is an absolute must-do Tampa Florida attraction.

Inside the aquarium, you’ll be able to view sea creatures native to Florida. The aquarium also is a leader in marine conservation and education. It hosts summer camp and school field trips throughout the year.

Classes are offered to children, which is why it’s one of the coolest things to do in Tampa with kids. The classes range in topics from conserving marine life to snorkeling in Florida natural springs without disturbing manatees.

Kids can play in an aquatic-themed water park and adults can brave a swim with the sharks. The whole family can meet the arctic penguins when they waddle out for a meet and greet! On occasion, the aquarium hosts adult sleepovers to spend a night next to the hypnotic glow of the massive tanks.

A giant manta ray greets visitors at the exterior of the Florida Aquarium.

Tampa Museum of Art

If you’re wondering where to go in Tampa while along the riverfront, head to the Tampa Museum of Art . It is host to an ever-growing permanent collection of ancient, modern, and contemporary art. It also houses one of the biggest Greek and Roman antiquities collections in all of the Southeastern United States.

The museum is probably most notable for the outdoor 14,000-square-foot LED art installation. Museum curators frequently update a schedule of visiting exhibitions. It features the best of old and new contemporary artists from all over the nation.

While in the museum grounds, guests can visit the Riverwalk cafe to sip on coffee or savor the gelato. There is also a museum gift store where you can find excellent gifts and souvenirs.

The space is small enough to take in the area’s best collection of national and international artists in one day. Making it an ideal first stop on your best day trip from Tampa.

The view of the Tampa Museum of Art from the Hillsborough River, one of the best things to do in Tampa.

Busch Gardens Tampa

Looking for fun places to go in Tampa? Then head to Busch Gardens Tampa! It is the 11th most-visited theme park in all of North America for a reason. With an African theme, the park has 9 distinct areas connected by a steam train, the Serengeti Express.

Children can meet Elmo and friends in the Sesame Street Safari of Fun. With daily performances from the gang and an interactive play area, they’ll love it. BREAKING: Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a longtime Democratic lawmaker from Texas, dies at 74

A new Tampa Bay Rays ballpark may honor the Black neighborhood the team once displaced

Stuart Sternberg smiles

A key city council vote Thursday on a major  redevelopment project  in St. Petersburg, Florida, could pave the way to give baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays a new ballpark, which would guarantee the team stays for at least 30 years.

The $6.5 billion project, supporters say, would transform an 86-acre tract in the city’s downtown, with plans in the coming years for a Black history museum, affordable housing, a hotel, green space, entertainment venues and office and retail space. There’s the promise of thousands of jobs as well.

The site, where the Rays’ domed Tropicana Field and its expansive parking lots now sit, was once a thriving Black community driven out by construction of the ballpark and an interstate highway. A priority for St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch is to right some of those past wrongs in what is known as the Historic Gas Plant District.

“The city’s never done anything of this scope,” said Welch, the city’s first Black mayor with family ties to the old neighborhood. “It’s a momentous day for our city and county.”

The linchpin of the project is the planned  $1.3 billion ballpark  with 30,000 seats, scheduled to open for the 2028 season. That would cap years of uncertainty about the Rays’ future, including possible moves across the bay to Tampa, or to Nashville, Tennessee, or even to split home games between St. Petersburg and Montreal, an idea MLB rejected.

Stu Sternberg, the Rays’ principal owner, said approval of the project — which also requires a vote by the Pinellas County Commission — will settle the question of the team’s future location.

“We want to be here. We want to be here to stay,” Sternberg said Wednesday.

The Rays typically draw among the lowest attendance in MLB, even though the team has made the playoffs five years in a row. This year, at this week’s All-Star break, the Rays have a 48-48 record, placing them fourth in the American League East division.

The financing plan calls for the city to spend about $417.5 million, including $287.5 million for the ballpark itself and $130 million in infrastructure for the larger redevelopment project that would include such things as sewage, traffic signals and roads. The city envisions no new or increased taxes.

Pinellas County, meanwhile, would spend about $312.5 million for its share of the ballpark costs. Officials say the county money will come from a bed tax largely funded by visitors that can be spent only on tourist-related and economic development expenses. The county commission is tentatively set to vote on the plan July 30.

The rest of the project would mainly be funded by the Rays and the Houston-based Hines development company.

The ballpark plan is part of a  wave of construction or renovation  projects at sports venues across the country, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Athletics, who are planning to relocate to Las Vegas. Like the Rays proposal, all of the projects come with millions of dollars in public funding that usually draws opposition.

Although the city’s business and political leadership is mostly behind the deal, there are detractors. Council member Richie Floyd said there are many more ways the ballpark money could be spent to meet numerous community needs.

“It still represents one of the largest stadium subsidies in MLB history. That’s the core of my concern,” Floyd said.

A citizen group called “No Home Run” and other organizations oppose the deal, with the conservative/libertarian Americans for Prosperity contending the track record for other publicly financed sports stadiums is not encouraging.

“The economic benefits promised by proponents of publicly funded sports stadiums fail to materialize time and time again,” said Skylar Zander, the group’s state director. “Studies have consistently shown that the return on investment for such projects is questionable at best, with most of the economic gains flowing to private interests rather than the general public.”

Still, the project seems to have momentum on its side. For former residents and descendants of the Gas Plant District neighborhood, it can’t come soon enough.

“All over this country our history is erased. That will not happen here,” said Gwendolyn Reese, president of the African American Heritage Association of St. Petersburg. “Our voices will be heard. And not just heard but valued.”

Rays open critical stretch with ugly showing in loss to Yankees

  • Marc Topkin Times staff

NEW YORK — Rays baseball operations president Erik Neander made clear Friday afternoon how important playing well this weekend against the Yankees, and in ensuing series against the Blue Jays and Reds, would be in determining how active they will be at the July 30 trade deadline.

With the Rays coming out of the All-Star break trailing Boston by 5 ½ games for the final American League wild-card spot (and six behind Minnesota for the second), Neander said there was no “magic number” to determine their direction, such as selling off veteran players, but they had to reduce the deficit in the race.

“It’s got to get smaller,” Neander said.

And then the Rays went out and made a mess with a sloppy performance in a 6-1 loss to the Yankees to open what manager Kevin Cash called a “critical” stretch of their season.

The loss dropped the Rays back under .500, at 48-49 and kept them from shrinking that gap.

Cash noted before the game, as he had frequently while the Rays won seven of their eight series going into the break, how they have “been playing better baseball here as of late.”

Not Friday.

They were charged with three errors, and guilty of several other misplays and missed plays, a couple by leftfielder Randy Arozarena, whose name has been popular in trade rumors. All-Star Isaac Paredes also had a rough night in the field filling in at first base for Yandy Diaz, who missed the game for what the team said was “a personal matter.”

Starter Zach Eflin, who figures to be one of the Rays’ most sought-after pieces if they do sell, issued a career high-tying four walks, including three in the fourth inning, all of whom scored.

And the hitters continued their struggles with runners in scoring position, Friday’s 0-for-8 skid extending their staggering slump to 8-for-78 (.102) over their last 10 games, of which they’ve won four.

Eflin, who came in with tremendous career numbers against the Yankees (3-2, 1.50 in seven starts), was not sharp from the start and didn’t get much help from the defense.

That cost him in the third, when he loaded the bases on a walk, a bunt single and another walk. A ground out scored one run, a two-out walk reloaded the bases, and Anthony Volpe laced a ball down the third base line to empty the bases and extend the lead to 4-0.

The Yankees made it 5-0 in the fourth when Juan Soto drove a ball off the leftfield wall. Arozarena mishandled the bounce off the wall then made a casual throw to the infield. Second baseman Richie Palacios’ relay to third hit Soto, for the Rays’ second error on the play, and he was awarded home.

There was another Tampa Bay defensive lapse in the sixth, when Soto drove a ball to left-center and no Ray covered second. Soto came around to score on Aaron Judge’s single.
