Christmas in Killarney

It’s the happiest season of all in the happiest town of all!

Christmas in Killarney only comes around once a year but what an experience it is.

Go see Killarney’s famous Christmas parade, take a sleighride through the magical Killarney National Park, see the tree of light at St. Mary’s Cathedral, enjoy some live entertainment at the INEC or most importantly visit Santa’s Grotto!

When Christmas comes to Killarney there is no end of the things to do.

You are guaranteed to have a holly, golly time.

Christmas in Killarney Parade

Killarney’s famed Christmas parades are coming back for Christmas 2023. These parades are the crown jewel of Christmas in Killarney and have become a favourite for families to attend. The parade consists on numerous floats that show off all our Christmas favourites such as gingerbread men, Christmas trees, reindeer, Mrs. Claus and of course the main event Santa Claus.  Watch in awe as the line of floats and characters weave their way through through the streets of Killarney to the delight of everyone. Don’t forget to put a letter into Santa’s post box on Main Street after the parade.

The parades will take place at 6pm on the 25th of November and the 2nd, 9th & 16th of December along with a Welcome Home parade on the 22nd of December. You won’t want to miss this magical event.

Killarney Sleigh Ride

Sleigh ride.

It wouldn’t be Christmas in Killarney without sleigh rides through the National Park. Grab your family and hop onto your sleigh pulled by a “reindeer” and take off on a magical experience full of amazing sights. You’re sleigh ride will consist of getting to see the famous Tree of Light at St. Mary’s Cathedral, take in idyllic views of the Lakes of Killarney, see the bright lights of Killarney Town and enjoy a stop at Ross Castle to explore one of the most breath-taking parts of Killarney National Park. All this and more awaits you with a Killarney Sleigh Ride.

Christmas shows the the INEC

Give the gift of entertainment this Christmas with a trip to the INEC! There is a full line-up of great live entertainment in the INEC this Christmas season. There will be rocking concerts, hilarious comedians and thrilling plays all on show this winter. See the likes of My Therapist Ghosted Me, Jenny Greene and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Dec Pierce, The Coronas, Wolfe Tones and many many more.

Tree of Light Ceremony

If there is one thing that you must do when in Killarney for Christmas it’s to see the magnificent switching on of the lights for the Tree of Light at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The 100ft Californian Redwood is a sight to behold as it is illuminated by 3000 bulbs that can be seen from all around Killarney. The event is marked with a short mass in the Cathedral before the main event of the lights being switched on! The tree brings thousands of visitors each and every year and for good reason. Don’t miss your chance to see this marvellous moment in person for yourself. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 28th at 6.45pm.

Santa's Grotto

Visit the main man himself at Santa’s Grotto this Christmas Season. Santa can be found in his grotto located in Deenagh Lodge in the Demesne from the 25th November all the way until the 23rd December. Remember to be on your best behaviour before you meet him because he knows when you’ve been naughty or nice and who knows what presents he’ll have for nice kids. This is a truly special moment in Killarney this Christmas season so make sure to pre register to meet Santa.

Wanderful Christmas

Killarney’s newest family Christmas activity is Wanderful Christmas.

  • This is a free, daytime family activity
  • Follow the map to find the tags and unlock the hidden animated christmas characters
  • 2.7 km easy buggy-friendly trail starts at Deenagh Lodge, through the National Park and Killarney Town

Christmas in Killarney

visit santa in killarney 2022

My first time experiencing the Christmas in Killarney parade was a few years ago when our kids were very young. Like most events at the time, I went expecting the usual fare: carrying kids on shoulders, negotiating large crowds and trying in vain to limit the intake of sweets before the inevitable battle to drag them home to bed. Most of the above ensued that night but there was also an unexpected bonus: A good time was had by all. The combination of decent vantage points (albeit involving some heavy lifting…), a compact parade and reasonably benign weather resulted in the Christmas in Killarney parade being awarded the ‘Best Night Ever’ accolade by the young voters on my shoulders.

Since that time, Christmas in Killarney has developed into one of the most anticipated and best loved events in the calendar. New and varied events and attractions are added each year, keeping the festival fresh as well as festive and attracting bigger crowds every year.

Although it has become a cliché of many festivals to say there is “something for everyone in the family”, Christmas in Killarney really does deliver on that promise with a wide variety of events. There are days out, nights out and a good mix of indoor and outdoor entertainment – always a wise move considering the time of year.

We Are Young

christmas in killarney parade

Christmas Magic at Muckross is a wonderful transformation of the  Muckross Traditional Farms  where Santa and some of the elves prepare for the busy time ahead. This is much more than the run of the mill “Come & Meet Santa” events that crop up around this time of the year. Magic at Muckross fits more into the ‘experience’ category and it’s one that they won’t forget. This is a paid event so bear that in mind but it is well worth a visit provided you’re not bring along  too  many kids with you!

Ice Ice Baby

For the not quite so young, the New Year’s Eve bash on the streets of Killarney with live music and DJs is a great way to ring in the new year.  Wrap up warm and hopefully the weather will co-operate to make this a great night on the town.

Killarney on Ice has now become a fixture in the Christmas in Killarney event calendar. The ice rink attracts a wide array of skating talent from those gliding effortlessly across the ice to the more cautious ones plodding around clutching carefully to the barriers. A session on the ice is great fun and is well worth a try even if you’ve never donned the blades before!

If you prefer a more sedate experience, a Jaunting Car Sleigh Ride might be more suitable. The famous Killarney jaunting cars are festively transformed throughout the season.

visit santa in killarney 2022

Another popular items on the calendar is the ‘ Dine in Killarney ‘ initiative which is run by many of the restaurants in Killarney. A reduced-price menu is offered on specific nights on the run in to Christmas – a great opportunity to get a nice meal at a bargain.

The Best Family Events at Christmas in Killarney

For those planning some family things to do, here are the highlights of the Christmas in Killarney festival. Find out more about all the events on the Christmas in Killarney website .

Hi im just wondering where n killarney dose a good santa visit?

Hi Majella. Muckross Traditional Farms converts to a winter wonderland at Christmas time and has a full tour culminating with a visit to Santa. It’s really good and worth a visit. Also there is usually a Santa’s grotto/cave in the town during the Christmas in Killarney festival. Killarney Outlet centre also has a good Santa on hand at that time of year. Thanks for taking the time to visit the site and leaving a comment. I hope you enjoy your Christmas in Killarney!!

Santa confirms he’s on his way to Killarney parade!

' src=

Killarney is set for a bumper festive parade - and a very special visit from Santa himself this Saturday night.

A new route and a new float have been added this year, and there'll be great excitement in town after last year's parade was cancelled due to COVID.

The turn-off from the Killarney bypass road to Upper Lewis Road, from both the Cleeny and Park Road sides, will be closed from 5.30pm to 6.15pm this Saturday night to facilitate the first Christmas in Killarney parade of the season.

A new route will see participants leaving from Fitzgerald Stadium and proceeding along Lewis Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street, with the festivities due to commence at 6pm.

Other traffic restrictions will also apply with the streets involved – in addition to Upper New Street – to be closed off from 5pm to 7.30pm.

Members of the public intending to gather to watch the parade are being encouraged to wear facemasks at all times and to respect social distancing requirements.

The Christmas in Killarney Festival Committee has asked people to plan their evening in advance, to arrive and park early and to find a safe place from which to view the parade.

“In the times we are living in and with ongoing concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19, safety is paramount and we would ask everybody to heed the advice we are offering and to obey stewards on the night,” said Christmas in Killarney voluntary chairman Niall Kelleher.

“All the volunteers will be wearing facemasks and we would ask all others to do so as well. It will be a long evening so people are asked to find somewhere comfortable and safe and to ensure any children they have with them are kept safe too,” he added.

“We are asking people to arrive in town early, enjoy the atmosphere, check out the shops and maybe even enjoy one of the Santa sleigh rides.”

Following the enforced absence last year, this year’s parade promises to be extra magical with an incredible new float lined up while all the other favourite floats have been given a fabulous new look.

Santa Claus has confirmed that he will be in attendance at the parade and he is looking forward to meeting all the boys and girls who, he revealed, are all on his ‘Nice’ list this Christmas.

A novel by a Killarney-born author has been adapted into a series by Apple TV+ and will be seen by millions worldwide this week.

Colin O’Sullivan was born in Killarney in 1974 and is now based in Tokyo, Japan where he works as a teacher.

His latest book, ‘The Dark Manual’, the third one in his portfolio, is a dark comedy that tells the story of a robot that befriends an Irish widow. Their unlikely friendship unravels the truth behind her husband’s death.

On Wednesday this week, (July 10) Apple TV will release the first two episodes of ‘Sunny’, the adaptation of his novel ‘The Dark Manual’.

The first of ten episodes will be screened to a huge worldwide TV audience starring Rashida Jones and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Japan’s most cherished actor).

American actress Jones is best known for roles in TV series like ‘The Office’.
