Discover the spirit of Vietnam and Cambodia

Vietnam and Cambodia are majestic countries brimming with a complex culture and extreme landscapes. From the great towering limestone islands of Halong Bay to the majestic, awe-inspiring Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. Both have the mighty Mekong river running through the heart of them.

The Mekong River runs from China through Burma, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia before emptying in the delta of Vietnam. It carves its way through stunning backdrops, past riverside towns and villages, through the remote jungle and vibrant cities.

If you choose to set sail on a Mekong River cruise with Pandaw you are promised a truly unforgettable experience. The Pandaw fleet is designed to allow you peace and serenity as well as open spaces to enjoy native talks, dances and demonstrations, and also a beautiful setting to dine. Imagine sitting down to eat whilst freshwater dolphins play in the water beside you.

The landscapes of both Cambodia and Vietnam are breathtaking; our cruises pass through a richly varying riverscape from the vast Mekong Delta with floating markets, bustling trading towns and vibrant river life to the silence of the Cambodian Mekong river with its delightful rural life. The people of the Mekong River will excite and intrigue. They are warm and welcoming and the passion they have about their lives and history is admirable. They are willing to teach you as much as you’re willing to learn.

The Mekong River travels from its delta near Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) through river villages up river to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Its Royal Palace is noted for two magnificent pagodas - the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Phnom Penh is 4 hours from the nearest seaport of Sihanoukville, so is best visited by river. Mekong cruises continue upriver to the Tonle Sap lake and on to the fabled Angkor Wat temple complex. See our guide to Mekong River Cruises and Cambodia for more information.

Cruise and tour itineraries combine the Mekong with visits to the main sights of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is a shock to the senses - few cars but hordes of motor bikes carrying goods and people. Beautiful pagodas contrast with French colonial buildings, communist landmarks with thriving markets. Around the Town Square are famous buildings such as the Rex Hotel and the Post Office, and nearby the colourful Ben Thanh Market selling everything from vegetables to fish, electronics to souvenirs.

In Saigon don’t miss a Vietnamese water puppet theatre show, and maybe take an amazing pedal cab ride through the busy streets. Outside the city a major attraction is the Cu Chi tunnels, a huge underground city, base for Viet Cong guerrillas. Not for the claustrophobic or rotund! Smaller cruise ships can sail up the Saigon river to the city outskirts, larger ships dock at Phu My about 90 minutes away.

From Saigon tours may visit Hoi An , an ancient market and trading town on the Thu Bon river. It has fascinating old houses and streets, colourful temples, and a famous Japanese covered bridge built in 1593. Its lively riverside market is a mixture of sights and smells. Hue , the ancient imperial capital has the Imperial Citadel, a World Heritage Site modelled on Beijing’s Forbidden City. Sea cruises may call at Nha Trang, an international tourist resort in a beautiful bay setting, or the port of Da Nang for visits to Hoi An or Hue.

Further north the unified Vietnamese capital is Hanoi , with its old quarter of narrow streets a mix of French colonial architecture and ancient temples, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. For many, the most amazing sight in Vietnam is Halong Bay , home to thousands of limestone islands of all shapes and sizes. Join a local junk for a close-up view, and maybe an overnight trip around the islands and the floating fishermens’ villages - their permanent homes. Smaller ships may cruise into the bay for an unforgettable memory as the ship threads between the islands.

Angkor Wat (Cambodia)

The Angkor Archaeological Park is has one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angkor Wat is the best-preserved and most iconic of the Angkor temple complex, built in the early 12th century to honour the Hindu god Vishnu. The temple took over 30 years to be completed by King Suryavarman II

This friendly city is developing as a tourist destination in its own right, having good sandy beaches and being close to the caves, grottos and Buddhist temples of the Marble Mountains. The main reason for visiting however, is Da Nang's proximity to My Son, the ruined capital of the Champa Kingdom; the lovely city of Hoi An and its pagoda bridge and tailors, and the grand imperial city of Hue.

The thousands of vertical limestone karsts and islands of Ha Long Bay are a memorable sight. Topped off with jungle vegetation, some of the islands are hollow and contain large cave chambers, whilst others like Cat Ba are inhabited and offer facilities for tourists. Floating villages with a population of fishermen can be seen during cruises through the bay.

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and renowned for its spectacular colonial architecture and ancient temples. Highlights include the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in the centre of Ba Dinh Square, the One-pillar Pagoda, a historic Buddhist temple and the Temple of Literature founded by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong. Hanoi serves as the gateway to the dramatic limestone cliffs of Halong Bay.

Ho Chi Minh City

Large cruise ships reach Ho Chi Minh City via the Saigon River and berth in the port of Phu My, whilst smaller vessels can approach along the Mekong Delta. Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has many places of interest, including the Cu Chi Tunnels which hid the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War; Reunification Hall, once the Presidential Palace, and the temples and Pagodas of the Cholon Chinatown district.

Hoi An is a picturesque town of well-preserved ancient buildings, Chinese-style shophouses, and famous for its covered pagoda bridge, its tailors, and colourful lanterns. It is World Heritage Listed for its importance as a 15th to 19th-century trading port, with a mixture of local and foreign architectural styles. The Museum of Trade ceramics is housed in an interesting old Hoi An home.

The World Heritage Site of Hue can be visited from Chan May or Da Nang. This exquisite city was once Vietnam's capital, built beside the Perfume River in the early 19th century, and contains a Forbidden City, pagodas, tombs, palaces, temples and lakes. It was described by the Director General of UNESCO in 1981 as 'a masterpiece of urban poetry', whose treasures include the six-tiered Thien Mu Pagoda, the Citadel and the Emperor's Tomb.

Nha Trang is an international tourist resort set in a beautiful bay. More lively and urban in character than other Vietnam beach destinations, it is the scuba diving centre of Vietnam. Local artwork can be found on Doc Lop Street and to visit the beaches of Hon Tre Island, take the hi-level Vinpearl Cable Car. Po Nagar Cham Towers are an elaborate series of 8th-century towers and temples on Cu Lao Mountain.

Phnom Penh is a busy, noisy city, still recovering from the horrors of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. Itineraries often include trips to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the grim Tuol Sleng or S21 Detention Centre. Less harrowing is the Royal Palace, and its two magnificent pagodas - the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the historic hill-top temple complex of Wat Phnom.

Siem Reap is the stepping-off point for visits to the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat. In Siem Reap itself, there are French shop-houses, and tree-lined avenues beside the river. The Angkor National Museum has displays tracing the history of the complex, and a short distance away by tuk-tuk is Kampong Phluk Floating Village, built on stilts in a mangrove forest. Siem Reap has good restaurants and several luxurious spas.

The port town of Sihanoukville is an attractive beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. There are watersports on offer along the beaches, where there are thatched beach umbrellas and seaside cafes. Sihanoukville has several temples in leafy surroundings, including the lovely hillside Wat Leu and its carved white elephant. In the Downtown area are markets, bars and cafes.

Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia is a UNESCO Biosphere known for its tranquil fishing villages. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia during the wet season and home to an abundance of wildlife including crocodiles, macaques and otter. Fishing is the main source of income however the flood plains are used to grow vegetables. Angkor, the capital which is located on the northeastern edge of the lake is a designated World Heritage site.

Where Is The Mekong River?

Do i need a visa to travel to the mekong river.

The Mekong River traverses multiple countries, so your visa requirements will depend on the cruise you want to take and your point of entry into the countries you will visit.

If you are taking a cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia, you will only need to acquire a Vietnam visa on arrival – your Cambodian visa will be stamped in your passport during the cruise.

However, if you are taking the downstream cruise and entering Vietnam on the river from Cambodia, most likely you will need to get your Vietnam visa before your cruise,  while the Cambodian visa can be easily acquired on arrival at the airport.

If you are cruising the Upper Mekong, you can get the Laos visa upon arrival at the airport or at the Thai border crossing, if your cruise starts in Huay Xai.

Do I Need To Get Any Vaccinations Or Malaria Tablets Ahead Of Travel?

Some travelers start taking malaria tablets before traveling to the Mekong River, but it is not a requirement. Your doctor may recommend that you get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever. You may also want to take precautions to protect yourself against mosquito bites.

What Is One Thing I Shouldn’t Miss Near The Mekong River?

There are countless sites and attractions along the Mekong River , one of the reasons it is such a popular spot for river cruises. On the Lower Mekong, the floating markets in the Delta  are a must-see. In the Upper Mekong, make sure to visit the Pak Ou Caves near Luang Prabang.

What Is The Local Cuisine Like?

Traveling along the Mekong River gives you the chance to try all different kinds of local cuisines. Southeast Asian countries are famous for their noodles and rice in many variations, and – along the Mekong – the local fish.

Dishes aren’t spicy and there are many vegetarian options. You can expect freshly made dishes using local vegetables, herbs, and soy or fish sauce to accompany them.

Mekong food specialities to try include the elephant ear fish and local rice pancakes popular in the Mekong Delta, in Cambodia its Khmer cuisine, and in Laos the lard and sticky rice.

Is The Mekong River Safe?

The Mekong River is a safe location. The only thing of which to be aware is that parts of it may be polluted. However, this should not be an issue if you are on a Mekong cruise. Practice good water safety and common sense and there is no reason you shouldn’t have a safe trip.

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go To The Mekong River?

The most pleasant time of year for a Mekong River trip is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cooler and drier (especially in the evening) with no rainfall.

Although, if you are interested in entering Tonlé Sap Lake by riverboat, you should aim for the end of the rainy season (August – mid November) when the water in the river is naturally higher making the lake accessible.

Is The Mekong River a Good Family Destination?

Taking a Mekong River cruise with kids is possible but most Mekong boats don’t allow kids younger than 7 years old on board. The Mekong Delta is an exciting destination for the whole family , with activities such as cycling, agricultural and cultural experiences, school visits, and ancient temple exploration.

Is The Mekong River a Good Honeymoon Destination?

The Mekong River can be a great honeymoon destination depending on your tastes, especially around its delta . With breathtaking sights, unique cultural experiences, romantic accommodations aboard luxurious riverboats, and serene riverine vistas, the Mekong is ideal for newlyweds who want a remote and adventurous honeymoon.

What people love about river cruise tours in cambodia and vietnam.

Long Pham was a major influence in ensuring that our tour was enjoyable ,stress free and full of memorable experiences. He was hand if we needed help..The tour did what it said it would. We were on a private tour and the Hotels, drivers ,and guides were of the highest tour met our everyneed and we experienced the real Asia It was a 5star all the way.well Realistic asia
We had a great time. Accommodation was very good although our room at the back was a little noisy due to being near the generator and engine room which I would not recommend ( maybe a discounted price should be offered ). Very well organized and excellent tour manager. Always something on the itinerary even whilst the boat was sailing eg cookery demos, serviette folding, fruit carving, talks, films. I think the cruise could be shortened by a couple of days as a lot of the things we saw were very repetitive ,especially the pagodas! We were the only English guests on board which at times was a little difficult but on the plus side we had our own personal English speaking guides (3 in total at different parts of the cruise) which was fantastic. Chan Seng in Cambodia has to have a special mention for his fantastic knowledge and understanding of English. The food both on board and at restaurants on land was excellent my only complaint was that the drinks were not included in the package which for the price we paid I think they should have been, as most cruises do, ( only a soft drink or a beer were included per person per meal). Overall I would recommend this cruise as we had a lovely time.
Mr chien Nguyen was our guide on the Mekong cruise on the indochine from hochi min city to cambodia, to luang starting on 2/10/23. Knowledgeable Fluent in English Friendly And concerned about our safety always. He was a 5* guide - the best in this trip

An Early Morning Departure: Kick off your day at 8:00 AM with a scenic 2.5-hour drive from Danang, passing through the Hai Van tunnel. Your destination: Hue, a city steeped in imperial history as the former capital of the Nguyen Lords during the 17th to 19th century. Embrace the city's regal allure, adorned with emperors' tombs, ancient pagodas, and the remnants of the Imperial Citadel.

Imperial Grandeur: Your first stop is the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel. Enter through the imposing main gate, where you'll be captivated by the grand architecture and lush gardens. Your guide will regale you with stories of the former royal court, recounting its events and intrigues. Despite enduring heavy bombings during the war, the citadel boasts remarkably preserved sections and ongoing restoration efforts.

Royal Tombs and Architecture: Next, you'll journey to the Royal Tomb of Minh Mang, the formidable second Nguyen Emperor. Known for his architectural prowess, he left a lasting legacy with extensive construction within the Imperial City, including a vast garden adorned with lakes and pavilions in traditional Chinese style.

Conclude your tour at the opulent Khai Dinh Royal Tomb. Its architecture is a striking fusion of Eastern and Western design elements. As the afternoon sets in, you'll make your way back to Danang, concluding your journey.

Hue's Royal Legacy Unveiled: This day trip to Hue offers a captivating glimpse into Vietnam's royal past. Immerse yourself in the ornate architecture and rich history of this former imperial capital. Traverse the towering citadel gates, explore splendid tombs, and marvel at the melding of eastern and western design at the Khai Dinh Royal Tomb. Hue's regal heritage awaits your discovery.

Welcome to the vibrant heart of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, where the energy is infectious and the history is palpable. Join us on a tour that unveils the city's rich heritage while showcasing its modern dynamism.

Our journey begins at the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, a splendid red brick structure with twin spires, built with imported materials from France. While renovation work prevents interior visits until late 2023, you can still admire its exquisite exterior.

Step across the square to find the Central Post Office, a striking edifice completed in 1891. Its timeless beauty and architectural grandeur transport you to a bygone era.

Presidential Palace and War Remnants: Our next stop takes us to the former Presidential Palace, which served as the Saigon Government's headquarters during the American War. Explore its rooms and gardens, where history comes alive through the stories they tell.

A short drive leads to the War Remnants Museum, offering a powerful perspective on the American War through the eyes of the Vietnamese people. Please be aware that some displays are graphic, providing a poignant and eye-opening experience.

Join us on a unique adventure to the renowned Cu Chi Tunnels, arriving faster and in style by taking a speedboat. We understand the value of your time and are committed to making your journey smooth and efficient.

Your day begins at 7:00 am as our guide greets you at your hotel. We'll swiftly head to Ho Chi Minh City's central pier for a remarkable speedboat journey to Cu Chi. Compared to road transfers, this speedboat option saves you about two hours, thanks to ongoing road reconstruction. You'll arrive at the Cu Chi Tunnels earlier, ensuring a quieter and more enjoyable visit.

Cruising the River: As we cruise, you'll witness a captivating transition from city buildings to lush jungle along the riverbanks. During the voyage, savor local fruits and refreshments while your guide shares insights into rural traditions and the unique aspects of life along the riverbank.

Explore the Intricate Tunnels: The Cu Chi Tunnels await your exploration. Venture into the intricate maze of underground passages, chambers, rooms, and booby traps. These tunnels served as a strategic stronghold for both the Vietminh and the Viet Cong, enabling them to appear suddenly, launch lightning ambushes, and disappear swiftly.

Experience the A O Show: Discover the heart of Ho Chi Minh City's culture with the mesmerizing A O Show. This captivating performance combines traditional Vietnamese artistry with contemporary techniques. Watch a talented ensemble of acrobats, dancers, and musicians narrate Vietnam's rich history and culture.

Morning Market & Culinary Adventure: Explore the authentic flavors of Saigon on a half-day culinary tour. Visit a historic market, savor local dishes, and learn about its rich history.

Your culinary journey begins with banh hoi nem nuong, grilled pork with rice vermicelli. Your guide introduces fresh ingredients and spices used in Vietnamese cuisine, visits a tofu factory, and explores market stalls.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with Vietnamese treats. Taste banh cuon Hanoi, steamed rice flour crepes, and other delights. This adventure concludes with a newfound appreciation for Saigon's culinary treasures.

Kickstart your adventure in the morning as our cruise guide meets you at your hotel lobby. You'll be seamlessly transferred to Saigon Port.

As you step onto the cruise, we ensure your safety with a comprehensive briefing in the Ramvong Lounge. Make yourself at home in your luxurious cabin and prepare for a delectable lunch soon after departure.

In the late afternoon, we anchor in the heart of the Mekong Delta. Sip on expertly crafted cocktails, marvel at the sunset, and watch sampans drift by. Indulge in a Vietnamese "A La Carte" dinner at the Indochine onboard Restaurant. It's a culinary journey merging flavors for even the most discerning palates.

Dinner will be a delightful onboard experience, and the ship will dock in Can Tho for the night. Onboard Activity: Engage in a captivating lecture on Vietnam, delving into its people, culture, and colonial history.

Can Tho to Hoa An: Begin your day with a mesmerizing sampan ride through the lively Cai Rang floating market, a vibrant glimpse into local river life. Before breakfast, visit a local noodle factory to learn about this Vietnamese culinary staple.

After lunch, explore Hoa An village, with its stunning flower gardens and engaging encounters with local residents. Discover the village's crafts, including the iconic conical hat, and enjoy a leisurely walk through the peaceful surroundings.

As evening approaches, the Princess anchors near Gieng Island, setting the stage for another day of exploration.

Experience the wonders of Angkor Wat and the incredible temples on this full-day private tour. Explore these historic gems with ease as we guide you through the following highlights:

Angkor Wat: Renowned as one of the 8 Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat stands as the largest religious monument ever built. This sprawling complex is a marvel of temples, pagodas, statues, palaces, and chambers, all dedicated to King Suryavarman II during the zenith of the Khmer Empire. Typically, it takes three days to explore the full site, and Angkor Wat serves as your first gateway to the wonders of Angkor. (Note: A 40-minute drive from Siem Reap's center is required to reach the site.)

Angkor Thom: Encircled by an extensive moat, Angkor Thom resembles a fortified city more than a religious site. It boasts five entrances, each facing a cardinal direction. The Victory Gate, leading from the Angkor Thom Royal Palace grounds, is the eastern gateway. These entrances used to have causeways, but today only the south gate maintains its water underpass.

Ta Prohm: Positioned at the western fringes of the Angkor Wat Complex, Ta Prohm is a captivating site. Constructed with colossal stones entwined by towering trees, Ta Prohm was commissioned by King Jayavarman VII as an early element of his monastery and university construction program. The site's mysterious ambiance led to its feature in the film "Tomb Raider." (Note: Visit in the afternoon to benefit from the shade provided by the extensive tree canopy.)

Bayon Temple: Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, Bayon is celebrated for its iconic stone faces. At a distance, the temple appears mountainous, but as you approach, the faces come into focus, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Preah Khan: Situated northeast of Angkor Thom, Preah Khan is another compelling Hindu temple commissioned by King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. The temple primarily consists of successive rectangular galleries surrounding a hidden Buddhist sanctuary within a dense forest. This serene temple rests on the outer perimeter of the vast Angkor Wat Complex, providing an opportunity for a tranquil visit away from the crowds.

Banteay Srei: Begin your adventure with a visit to the enchanting Banteay Srei temple, known for its remarkable pinkish sandstone architecture. Explore the intricate carvings and immerse yourself in the temple's unique charm.

Banteay Samre: Continue your temple exploration with a stop at Banteay Samre. Marvel at the ancient structures and uncover the history hidden within these sacred grounds.

Ox Cart Ride: Traverse the picturesque Cambodian countryside in an ox cart. As you roll through this idyllic landscape, soak in the beauty of rice fields, swaying palm trees, and quaint villages. This leisurely journey immerses you in the heart of rural Cambodia.

APOPO Rat Center: Gain insight into an extraordinary hero in Cambodia – the APOPO rats. Discover how these rodents have saved countless lives through their unique abilities. Learn about the innovative methods employed to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance, making Cambodia safer for all.

Mekong Cruises from Vietnam to Cambodia offer 2 different directions: upstream (from Vietnam) or downstream (from Cambodia). Some people prefer downstream cruises because of flight to Siem Reap is easier to find and book. So it depends on your plan and available tickets you can choose any direction because they offer similar experiences and visiting places.

Each country offers a different visa policy, for the cruise between Vietnam and Cambodia , we will separate to two different routes:

  • Upstream: You can get both Vietnam & Cambodia visas on arrival with an approval letter for Vietnam and pay stamp fees at the airport or river border.
  • Downstream: You can get a Cambodia visa on arrival when you arrive for a Vietnam visa (since you could not get a visa on arrival at the border, so you need to make a visa before arriving). We could support you to do an urgent visa at Vietnam Embassy in Cambodia with fees of 85 USD if you don't have a visa before arriving.

I hope this information will help you to know how to do it or please contact our travel consultant if you need more help.

There are nearly 20 cruises in the Mekong River run between Vietnam & Cambodia from budget to luxury options. The best cruise is depend on your wish, below is some of my suggestion:

  • Best Luxury cruise: Aqua Mekong Cruise (price from 900++/person/night)
  • Best value cruise: RV Mekong Prestige II Cruise (price from 300 ++/person/night)

I hope you can find your best option or contact our travel consultant to find a suitable one.

Vietnam cruises with Celebrity show you the many faces of this intriguing country. Ancient temples, incense heavy in the air, contrast with a backdrop of glassy skyscrapers. A constant stream of scooters and motorbikes forms a river of activity through the busy cities, where street food sizzles on roadside stalls. But there’s serenity, too. Historic palaces and ornate pagodas lie in the midst of dense tropical vegetation, while emerald rice paddies reflect the vast sky.

Join a cooking class to prepare fresh, spicy Vietnamese specialties. Take a cycling tour around the enchanting town of Hoi An. See the sheer-sided limestone towers of Halong Bay from a kayak, and delve into modern history in Ho Chi Minh City, with its poignant museums and nearby, the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. You’ll find a dazzling choice of activities and excursions on a cruise to Southeast Asia with Celebrity.

Vietnam Cruise Highlights

Ancient temples.

Vietnam’s countryside is dotted with majestic temples displaying an ageless beauty of bygone cultures. My Son temple complex, near Danang, is one of the most impressive, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. Although the crumbling buildings are partly consumed by tropical greenery, a visit here gives you an insight into the wealth and sophistication of Vietnam’s Cham dynasty. Near Hue, visit the Imperial City, a complex within the walled citadel that was once the seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen rulers.

Dazzling Scenery

When it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty, Vietnam has it all. Some 1,600 jungly limestone towers are scattered across an often mist-shrouded sea in Halong Bay, where tooth-like mountains are reflected in mirror-calm paddy fields. In the far south, rivers criss-cross the vast maze of the green Mekong Delta, coconut palms lining their banks. You’ll find endless golden beaches, too, especially around Danang, lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.

Exciting Cuisine

Vietnamese food is both elegant and unique, and packed with contrasts. Spicy dishes are tempered with fresh herbs and vegetables, while crispy salads are paired with refreshing soups and noodles. During your cruise, you could learn to make classic dishes like crispy spring rolls, stir-fried beef, minty chicken salad, and green papaya salad topped with fresh shrimp. Even if you prefer not to cook, don’t miss a chance to browse Vietnam’s colorful markets and dine in a local restaurant.

Ports of call include Ho Chi Minh City; Chan May, for Hue and Danang; the beach resort of Nha Trang; and Halong Bay, gateway to the capital, Hanoi, and magnificent limestone landscapes. Most cruises include an overnight in Halong Bay.

Why cruise to vietnam with celebrity cruises.

Celebrity’s ships take you along the coast of Vietnam in style. Toast to the end of a thrilling day ashore with cocktails at the al fresco Sunset Bar. Enjoy the flavors of iconic Italian dishes in Tuscan Grille, or specialty coffee and pastries from Café al Bacio. On Solstice-series ships, visit the Lawn Club on the upper deck for relaxing, sunbathing, or a game of croquet. Choose The Retreat for the ultimate in luxury, with access to an exclusive lounge and sundeck, fine dining in Luminae, exclusive to guests of The Retreat, and chic suite accommodation.

A cruise to Vietnam with Celebrity will give you an in-depth insight into this complex and fascinating country, from the buzz of cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City to the intricate, 19th century citadel of Hue and the French colonial architecture of Hanoi. You’ll have time to bask on the sandy beaches of Nha Trang, gaze at the otherworldly scenery of Halong Bay, and indulge in one of the most exciting cuisines in Southeast Asia.

A journey through the lower Mekong River includes captivating experiences.

In its 2023 state of the cruise industry report , the cruising trade organization Cruise Lines International Association forecasts that the industry will host over 36 million guests who set sail in 2024. The majority of these seafaring travelers will choose one of the legacy cruise lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. Fewer still will make it onto the medium-size lines: Viking, Disney or Virgin. And proportionally very few will take a boutique river cruise distinctly off the beaten path. According to the report, 85% of travelers who have cruised would opt for the experience again, and the cruising industry as a whole continues to be one of the fasting-growing sectors of tourism with a forecast to grow by 19% within the next four years.

The lasting component of any mode of travel is often the cultural immersion it facilitates. Numerous surveys conclude that more than half of travelers find experiencing a destination as a local to be a high priority, and travelers considered a trip “wasted” if they don’t experience local culture. Smaller cruise ships are especially adept at providing these intimate experiences.

Guests can fully immerse themselves in the local culture.

For visitors to Vietnam and Cambodia, the Mekong River can feel worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Mekong's floating markets, quaint boat-accessible villages, tranquil river inlets and historic temples all contribute to this unique experience. Through bespoke expeditions and programming offered by Heritage Line , guests can fully immerse themselves in the culture of the mighty Mekong. Riding ox-pulled carts through rice paddies, learning silk weaving alongside local artisans and meditating alongside monks in a Cambodian monastery are just a taste of Heritage Line’s authentic and tailored itineraries meant to bring its visitors closer than ever to the culture they are exploring.

Cambodia and the Mekong River can feel worlds apart.

The dominant features of the Cambodian landscape are the large, almost generally located, Tonle Sap (Great Lake) and the Bassac River Systems and the Mekong River, the third longest in Asia, which crosses the country from North to South. The river then flows through Vietnam (the lower basin), fanning out across the tropical lowlands of the Mekong Delta then draining into the South China Sea.

The ship offers the luxurious facilities of a five-star resort.

Cruise on Heritage Line’s five-star vessels Jayavarman and The Jahan . Evoking the glory of former British-India, The Jahan cruises the lower Mekong River with 26 exquisitely designed staterooms and suites, all with large balconies. The ship offers all the luxurious facilities of a fine five-star resort throughout its three lavish passenger decks, of which the terrace deck offers guests a pool, two shaded sun lounger areas, open-air bar & lounge, spa, observatory lounge and elegant dining hall. Heritage Line’s Jayavarman merges wonderful French-Colonial ambiance with Khmer art throughout its interiors. 27 elegant staterooms and suites, all with private balconies, are spread over two decks. Luxury public facilities include the Club 1930 Funnel Bar and the ship’s elevated sun deck with pool, both prime open-air venues to kick back with wonderful river views.

A journey through the lower Mekong River includes unique, captivating experiences centered in both education and support of the local community. Guests can choose from three, four or seven nights. This classic Seven-Night Mekong River cruise – named The Lost Civilisation – combines places rarely visited with fantastic historical heritage sites. If offers a complete fluvial discovery of Vietnam and Cambodia along the Mekong with a combination of experiences one never will forget.

Travelers are treated to dance with classic Apsara performers.

Accompanied by local English-speaking guides, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the town of Cai Be to explore rice paper, rice cookies, rice wine and coconut candy production, taste fruit from a local family’s fruit garden on Tan Phong Island, weave water hyacinth plants into artistic crafts with a small village that supports itself fully on the art form, mingle with residents at local markets, meet with priests at a Cao Dai temple to learn more about the religion along the Mekong, dance with classic Apsara performers and more. In Tan Chau your personal rickshaw driver leisurely navigates through a network of streets, allowing you to observe workshops, street vendors, shops and the intriguing day-to-day activities of the locals.

Head to Phnom Penh, a city once renowned as the "Paris of the East." Despite its rapid development, it has retained much of its rustic charm and elegance. Phnom Penh is a remarkable city with a history and culture that spans centuries, still palpable at every street corner. Start with a cyclo ride, meandering through the town and then visit historic places such as the palace and the silver pagoda. Pause for a delightful lunch in town before continuing to visit one of the country's most famous history museums, "Sosoro," and concluding the tour with a leisurely stroll through the city's French quarter.

Spearheaded by Heritage Line founder John Tue Nguyen, who grew up on the Perfume River in the imperial city of Hue, Vietnam, the team behind Heritage Line is driven by the desire to share undiscovered parts and untold stories of the Southeast Asian River. Nguyen’s gentle dedication to the region affords passengers passengers the unique opportunity to visit these small villages that are often untouched by visitors and learn about their art forms.

World Bank country classifications by income level for 2024-2025

Eric metreau, kathryn elizabeth young, shwetha grace eapen.

The World Bank Group assigns the world’s economies [1]  to four income groups: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high. The classifications are updated each year on July 1, based on the GNI per capita of the previous calendar year. GNI measures are expressed in United States dollars [2]  using conversion factors derived according to the  Atlas method , which in its current form was introduced in 1989 [3] . The World Bank’s income classification aims to reflect a country’s level of development, drawing on  Atlas GNI per capita  as a broadly available indicator of economic capacity. The classification of countries into income categories has evolved significantly over the period since the late 1980s. In 1987, 30% of reporting countries were classified as low-income and 25% as high-income countries. Jumping to 2023, these overall ratios have shifted down to 12% in the low-income category and up to 40% in the high-income category.  The scale and direction of these shifts, however, varies a great deal between world regions. Here are some regional highlights:

  • 100% of South Asian countries were classified as low-income countries in 1987, whereas this share has fallen to just 13% in 2023.
  • In the Middle East and North Africa there is a higher share of low-income countries in 2023 (10%) than in 1987, when no countries were classified to this category.
  • In Latin America and the Caribbean , the share of high-income countries has climbed from 9% in 1987 to 44% in 2023.
  • Europe and Central Asia has a slightly lower share of high-income countries in 2023 (69%) than it did in 1987 (71%).

These changing compositions are depicted visually in the diagram below, which shows country classifications by region and over time since 1987.

Classification changes

The updated country income classifications for FY25, based on the GNI per capita of 2023, are available  here .

From a statistical perspective, classifications can change for two reasons:

  • Changes to Atlas GNI per capita : In each country, factors such as economic growth, inflation, exchange rates, and population growth can all influence the level of Atlas GNI per capita. Revisions to improve methods and data can also have an impact. Updated data on Atlas GNI per capita for 2023 can be accessed  here .
  • Changes to classification thresholds : To keep income classification thresholds fixed in real terms, they are adjusted annually for inflation using the  Special Drawing Rights (SDR) deflator , a weighted average of the GDP deflators of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Euro Area. The new thresholds for Atlas GNI per capita (in US$) are as follows:

The chart below shows the economies moving to new income categories this year:

This year, three countries—Bulgaria, Palau, and Russia—moved from the upper-middle-income to the high-income category:

  • Bulgaria  has been steadily approaching the high-income threshold with modest growth throughout the post-pandemic recovery period, which continued in 2023 as real GDP grew 1.8%, supported by consumption demand.
  • Palau  also continued its post-pandemic recovery as GDP returned to previous levels, growing by 0.4% in real terms. With inflation (as measured by the GDP deflator) at 8.1%, nominal GNI increased 10.0%.
  • Economic activity in  Russia  was influenced by a large increase in military related activity in 2023, while growth was also boosted by a rebound in trade (+6.8%), the financial sector (+8.7%), and construction (+6.6%). These factors led to increases in both real (3.6%) and nominal (10.9%) GDP, and Russia’s Atlas GNI per capita grew by 11.2%.

Algeria, Iran, Mongolia, and Ukraine all moved up from the lower-middle-income to the upper-middle-income category this year:

  • While the  Algeria n economy grew 4.1% in 2023, the main reason for the upward reclassification was a comprehensive revision to national accounts statistics undertaken by the Algerian authorities (Office National des Statistiques) to align with current international standards. This realignment resulted in an upward revision to the level of GDP (on average 13.3% higher over the 2018-2022 period) due, for example, to the expansion of investment estimates to include research and development, improved methods for measuring production in public administration, and improved coverage of the non-observed economy.
  • Iran ’s economy grew 5.0% in 2023, driven mainly by oil exports and supported by gains in services and manufacturing. GNI jumped 39.5% in nominal terms which, combined with the depreciation of the Iranian rial, resulted in a 17.6% increase of the Atlas GNI per capita.
  • Mongolia  continued its recovery after the pandemic, with real GDP increasing 7.0% in 2023. Growth was driven by expansions in mining of 23.4%, along with higher export prices which boosted exports by 53.4%.
  • Ukraine ’s upward change in classification resulted from a resumption of economic growth in 2023 (real GDP grew 5.3%, following a drop of 28.8% in 2022) along with a continued decline in population, which has fallen more than 15% since the invasion from Russia began. These factors were further amplified by price increases of domestically produced goods and services to result in a large increase in nominal Atlas GNI per capita of 18.5%. While Ukraine’s economy was significantly impaired by Russia’s invasion, real growth in 2023 was driven by construction activity (24.6%), reflecting a sizable increase in investment spending (52.9%) supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction effort in the wake of ongoing destruction.

West Bank and Gaza was the only country whose classification moved downward this year. The conflict in the Middle East began in October 2023, and while the impact on West Bank and Gaza was limited to the fourth quarter, its scale was nonetheless sufficient to lead to a 9.2% drop in nominal GDP (-5.5% in real terms). Since West Bank and Gaza’s economy was close to the threshold (it entered the upper-middle-income category only last year), these declines brought Atlas GNI per capita back down to the lower-middle-income category.

More information

Detailed information on how the World Bank Group classifies countries is available  here . The  country and lending groups  page provides a complete list of economies classified by income, region, and World Bank lending status and includes links to prior years’ classifications. The classification tables include World Bank member countries, along with all other economies with populations greater than 30,000. These classifications reflect the best available GNI figures for 2023, which may be revised as countries publish improved final estimates. Data for  GNI ,  GNI per capita ,  GDP ,  GDP PPP , and  Population  for 2023 are now available on the World Bank's Open Data Catalog. Note that these are estimates and may be revised. For more information, please contact us at  [email protected] .

[1]  The term country, used interchangeably with economy, does not imply political independence but refers to any territory for which authorities report separate social or economic statistics. [2]  In countries where dual or multiple exchange rates are in use, the exchange rate used to convert local currency units to US$ is an average of these exchange rates, provided necessary data are available. [3]  For data beginning in reference year 1987. The authors are pleased to acknowledge the essential contributions of our colleagues,  Charles Kouame , and  Tamirat Yacob to the preparation of this piece. Please note: The country classification described here aims to serve analytical purposes and changes have no direct impact on the eligibility for World Bank resources. In the classification used for World Bank operational purposes, a range of additional criteria are considered to determine country eligibility and the terms and conditions of Bank financing.
