Die Metro AG mit ihrem Sitz in der Metrostraße im östlichen Stadtteil Flingern-Nord gehört zu den größten internationalen Playern im Bereich des Groß- und Einzelhandels. Von hier aus werden die Geschicke der Metro-Cash-&-Carry-Märkte und der Real-Handelskette gelenkt. Seit der Gründung im Jahre 1963 ist die Kette gewaltig gewachsen. Das aus den USA importierte Geschäftsmodell des Selbstbedienungsgroßmarktes für Großhändler war von Erfolg getragen. Immer wieder überrascht das Unternehmen die Fachwelt mit völlig neuen, revolutionären Produkten, die hier in Düsseldorf erdacht werden. So werden die leistungsfähigen Klebstoffe von Henkel in der Luft- und Raumfahrt eingesetzt. Die Rheinmetall AG mit Sitz in Düsseldorf am Rheinmetallplatz produziert Rüstungsgüter und Automobilteile. Hier am ehemaligen Industriestandort residiert die Unternehmensleitung mit ihren Stabsabteilungen. Das Unternehmen hat auf dem Industriegelände neue architektonische Stilelemente mit traditionellen Industriegebäuden verbunden. Bereits im Jahre 1902 wurde Air Liquide auf der Basis von technologischen Innovationen gegründet. This historic hotel sits at the base of one of the nation’s most impressive peaks. Here’s what you need to know when visiting this very cool destination.

Crowd control

Roughly three hours south of Seattle, this wildly popular national park has several entrances and this season, visitors are required to make a reservation online before entering. Note, some spots are released on the day-of, so check back if you’re frozen out. On a recent weekday, the wait time at the Nisqually entrance was still nearly an hour, so there might still be some kinks to work out. Fortunately, there was a roadside fruit stand selling, yup, Rainier cherries .

Once in, many visitors stop at Longmire while others continue up the mountain to check into the Paradise Inn , which has been welcoming guests since 1917. The rustic style of architecture has often been repeated over the years, and anyone who’s interested in the building process that pre-dates heavy equipment should settle down for a good read in the impressive lobby. Surprising fact? No nails were used in the original construction of the log-forward design.

The inn’s dining room features a breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner, for the latter, reservations are recommended. Chef A.J. Atkins oversees the culinary program in the dining room, the grab-and-go Tatoosh cafe and a deli at the Henry M. Jackson Visitor’s Center.

At lunch, the inn’s menu’s all over the map, with nods to the Pacific Northwest including a buffalo meatloaf sandwich. But there’s also a cheesesteak, so... go figure.

When dining out at a new place, I like to test the kitchen’s prowess by tasting the daily soup and a salad. The friendly, efficient waitstaff delivered a cup of tomato-basil alongside a salad that promised fresh spinach from Yakima. Strike one, the soup was lukewarm and, strike two, there was very little spinach in the salad and the rest of the greens were less than fresh. The honey-balsamic was too sweet and too tart. Bummer.

I’m going to chalk this up to a possible case of waiting for fresh supplies to be delivered and a side of self-doubt or I should’ve ordered that-ism. The server took the not-so-hot soup, which I didn’t eat, off the tab, but didn’t ask if there was anything else I wanted instead. Hmm.

Yes, please, I would’ve said. Please bring me the wild mushroom pate and a burger. Next time.

Even though lunch was lackluster, I still enjoyed myself. The views were stunning and the atmosphere buzzed with happy diners, who were just returning from a hike up the hill. I set out for a stroll to the visitor’s center to watch the park’s signature movie — did you know Rainier has the potential to be one of the planet’s most destructive volcanos if/when it erupts again? — and feast on the ice cream novelties offered at the deli. What a sweet spot to visit... even if you have to share it with hundreds and hundreds of others.

If you go: Many visitors make it a day trip, but if you’re looking to stay on the mountain, booking advance reservations is highly recommended at Paradise Inn and at the National Park Inn in Longmire. Before arriving at the Nisqually entrance, consider making a stop at the adorable Elbe Market to pick up some snacks or an espresso, while you can fuel up at Scaleburgers , across from the historic railroad.
