The Trek Powerfly 8 FS is a full suspension trail ebike with 130 mm RockShox air suspension. What really sets it apart from others in the space right now is the straight downtube (offering a higher stiffness to weight ratio) and adjustable seat stays with Mino Link plates that can be flipped for a slack stable ride or upright quick ride. Trek is a well-established brand, one of the “Big Three” leaders in the US, and their network of dealers provide test rides, maintenance, and support that some other smaller electric bike companies just can’t. With this model, you’re getting a high-quality drive system from Bosch, four frame sizes offering improved fit and an outstanding eleven-speed drivetrain with a unique clutch and chain guide system. While I was not able to test it thoroughly on mountain trails, I had enough time romping around on some small hills and grassy areas to appreciate the purpose built frame and ebike-tuned suspension. The areas that let me down, however, were the average weight (~50.5 lbs) and lack of bottle cage bosses. The straight downtube and air suspension do cut weight but perhaps the Aluminum frame is just thicker and sturdier than some competing offerings that weigh slightly less. The Trek website says that the Powerfly can support up to 300 lbs which is more than a lot of other e-bikes (most tend to say 250 lbs). With tubeless-ready plus sized tires, Trek’s Boost technology (longer axles for wider spoke bracing angle), a variable position seat post dropper, and enormous hydraulic disc brakes… it’s a capable product. And at $5k, it’s priced on par with the competition.

Driving this bike is a high-torque Bosch Performance Line CX motor. It offers up to 75 Newton meters of torque while the standard Performance Line model maxes out at 63 Nm. Even though it’s rated at 250 watts nominal, it peaks out above 500 watts and does not struggle with hills if you shift appropriately. The chainring is extra small with just 15 teeth. It spins about 2.5 times for every crank revolution that you pedal and it responds to three signals: rear wheel speed, pedal cadence, and pedal torque… at one thousand times per second. Notice how clean and integrated the motor looks on this bike. Bosch centerdrives have become more compact in recent years and the slim black casing with molded chain guide here is perfect. There’s a small chainring guard to keep debris out and the chain from bouncing off track. Having seen many other Bosch powered electric mountain bikes, this one struck me as the cleanest and most compact without sacrificing performance. Even though I was wearing pants during this test, I didn’t feel concerned about snags and grease because of the way the drivetrain was setup. And at the rear, the 11-42T cassette offers plenty of range for climbing and descending. The motor assists smoothly up to 20 mph, making this a Class 1 electric bike, and produces a distinct whining noise at higher RPM, but I’d rather have a little noise than limited support. The Bosch motor maxes out at 120 RPM while some others max at 100 which feels sluggish in lower gears if you shift down to climb. One additional highlight with the motor design that I liked was an Aluminum skid plate designed to protect the bottom bracket area. It’s vented, appears to be replaceable and curves up at the edges creating a beautiful and functional protective shield against rocks, sticks and other trail obstacles.

Powering the Powerfly 8 is a high-capacity Bosch Powerpack 500. That’s 25% larger than the older Powerpack 400 with less than 0.5 lbs of additional weight. And the mounting interface is backward compatible! Charging is still fast and convenient, on or off the bike, with the 4 Amp Bosch charger. It only weighs 1.7 lbs and is compact enough to toss into a medium sized hydration pack. Expect 30+ miles of range in the higher levels of assist, even on rigorous terrain. If you’re doing cross country with a splash of trail, then 50+ would not unreasonable. The pack stands out a bit more than some of the Brose powered ebikes from Bulls and Specialized but the battery is easier to remove and cheaper to replace. I love the loop handle at the top, the LED charge indicator on the side and the solid locking core. Being black, the battery blends in perfectly with the matte-black paint job on the Powerfly. Note the black motor casing, cable covers, and spokes. In addition to powering the bike, the battery also feeds to the large, backlit display panel which has a Micro-USB power port on the right edge. This could be used to maintain a phone for GPS or Strava or other portable electronic device. Note however, that the port only sends 5 Volts at 500 milliamps vs. 1 mA required for iOS device charging. I’m not sure of the reasoning but wish Bosch would update this for iPhone users.

One thing that has not been updated for 2017 is walk-mode, I was told by Trek and Bosch that it is disabled. Normally, if you press the walk button on the top of the control pad (located near the left grip) then hold the plus button, the bike will power itself. Given the 50ish lb weight of this bike, being able to have it assist you when climbing by foot is a nice feature, and most other Bosch powered models do have this, but apparently Trek didn’t want it to be confused with a throttle or had other reasons (my apologies for confusing this in an earlier version of the review where I said that walk mode did work). Some highlights of the display panel and control pad include the ability to calculate range on the fly. Just press the i button several times to cycle through trip stats like odometer, max speed, and clock. Once on the range menu, use the plus and minus keys to select from the four levels of assist and watch as the bike dynamically estimates how much further it can take you based on battery level, assist level and the last three miles of performance. This is much more useful than the five battery ticks on the infographic at the top of the display. Raising or lowering assist level can be done easily, without looking down at the display, because the keys produce a tactile click and are within reach of the left grip. I usually ride in the two middle levels of assist to extend range and flex my muscles. It can be a lot of work to ride a bike like this completely unpowered, especially with the larger knobby tires, but it’s not impossible and once up to speed, it coasts beautifully. In fact, coasting downhill unpowered can be quite satisfying, very predictable.

There’s not a lot to complain about with this bike and I like that it introduces some new technology. From the straight downtube with Block-Lock stem, risers and stem cap to Boost long axles and the adjustable stay lengths… it’s a standout. But it’s still a heavier product, one that doesn’t allow you to bunny hop as easily as an unpowered mountain bike. I don’t mean to complain about this product, it’s the same situation with most electric mountain bikes today. it’s a different kind of riding, one that allows you to flow uphill, enjoy your rest days, build trails more efficiently or keep up with advanced friends. I guess I was excited about the air suspension and material savings of the downtube. Trek is a leader with bicycle technology and perhaps one day we will see a product like this that offers a lighter battery with less range in favor of more control. For today, the ability to adjust how the bike handles using Mino Links is a great step. And even though you can’t fit a bottle cage in the main triangle, there are adapters for the saddle rails and most people just use a hydration pack. The high convenience and wide availability of the battery design are great benefits. This is an excellent electric mountain bike with one of the best drive systems currently available, my personal favorite, and it’s probably going to be easier to find in person and test ride than a lot of competitors.

  • Unique adjustable length seat stay feature, the “Mino Link” plate allows you to change the geometry from upright and quick to slack and stable for trail or climbing to enduro and downhill riding respectively
  • The Bosch Powerpack 500 battery is one of the most compact, lightweight, and energy dense products around… the mounting interface is backward compatible with the Powerpack 400, I like that both packs have a solid locking plate, integrated LED charge indicator and loop handle for transport
  • Quick release wheels, removable display panel, and removable battery pack make this an easy bike to transport or park securely
  • Sturdy thru-axles and longer hubs with Boost technology provide support for wider 40 mm rims and fatter 2.8″ plus sized tires, the tires offer stability at speed, improved traction, and decreased deflection
  • The tires and rims are setup to run tubeless with strips and valves included, this allows you to ride at lower PSI for soft terrain and reduces weight
  • Large hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano provide excellent stopping power, you get a 203 mm rotor up front and 180 mm in the rear, this provides smooth stops with just a finger or two
  • Multiple compression clicker positions on the suspension fork with lockout, the rear suspension offers rebound and compression adjust, both are lightweight air that can be sagged to fit a range of rider weights, the rear suspension is factory tuned for this heavier bike
  • Molded chain guide pairs perfectly with an alloy guard to keep your pants mostly clear and the chain on track, it’s compact and durable… nicer than some of the other e-mountain bikes I’ve seen which might have one system or the other but not both
  • Purpose-built frame was stiff and responsive, internally routed cables and seat post dropper kept it clean and the black color scheme allowed the battery, motor and wires to blend in
  • Eleven-speed drivetrain offers more than enough pedal range for climbing and topping 20 mph, though in my experience it can be difficult to do without assist given the weight and tread here without descending
  • Available in four frame sizes to improve rider fit, the seat post dropper offers “infinite” height positions vs. steps and you get three riser stacks to play with for stem height
  • Trek invented Boost technology for wider, stiffer axles to support 29er wheels and now the 27.5″ plus sized tire setup with a wider bracing angle on the spokes, I love the knock-block stem, headset top cap, spacers and frame chip and rubber hartzell hug impact-absorbing downtube bumper backup protection system (to prevent oversteer into the straight shot downtube which could damage the fork and frame), by making the downtube straight they reduced the strength to weight ratio and improved stiffness
  • Sleek motor integration with low-profile plastic covers and a plastic moulding piece at the base of the battery pack, it brings everything together visually
  • The Bosch Performance Line CX motor is fast and powerful but produces an audible whine at high RPM, it’s louder than Brose and Yamaha in my experience but not by a lot
  • No room for bottle cage bosses, expect to wear a hydration pack or add a cage adapter to your saddle
  • Heavier than I was expecting at 50.5 lbs, the high capacity Bosch Powerpack 500 only adds half a pound the air suspension shouldn’t add much
  • Standard chainring teeth vs. narrow-wide for increased grab, no chain pulley to raise the chain and reduce kickback (though I did not experience any), the molded chain guide should prevent drops
  • Apparently most Trek mountain bikes do not come with pedals, it’s a minor gripe, you’ll have to pick up some aftermarket (the bike I tested had Bontrager Line Pro alloy platform with adjustable height pins)

Jeff backes.

I have the same bike purchased last October. I can not get the Walk feature to work. I took it to my LBS yesterday they “enabled” the walk feature using the Bosch software but still does not work as expected.

I press the walk button, release it, then press the + button no joy :(

Hi Jeff! So you’re saying that walk mode does work but you have to hold the + button constantly correct? That sounds right to me, perhaps I explained it incorrectly in the video. If you could design it your own way, what would you prefer? Maybe I can share the feedback with Bosch at the next ebike event they put on :)

I have tried everything I could think of. Press walk – press and hold plus. Press walk, release then press and hold plus. Press walk, stand on head press and hold plus. Plank on saddle, press walk, release, press and hold plus.

Trek Powerfly 8 FS Review

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

We liked the Trek Powerfly from the day it was released back in 2015. Then, in June last year the American manufacturer launched an updated version. What has this € 4,999 bike to offer?

Trek Powerfly 8 FS

Trek has literally nailed it in this test while utterly exhausting the budget. For five grand you take home a fancy frame with exciting details and cleverly chosen components. For starters it comes with a complete Shimano XT drive train, Deore brakes, a reliable Bosch Performance CX motor and a RockShox suspension combo that includes a Yari fork and a Deluxe shock – both with 130 mm travel. If we wanted to be picky we would point out the cheap looking finish of the battery and motor cover, the long-ish 70 mm stem and the bulky Bosch Intuvia display. The headset-integrated Knock Block, which prevents the handlebar from knocking against the top tube, doesn’t bother us on the trail but can be a pain in other situations, like when loading the bike into the car. The massive Skid Plate protects the motor but most importantly has an integrated bottle opener. Cheers!

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

Once we sit on the Trek Powerfly 8 we get an immediate urge to push hard into the pedals. The reason for this is the stretched riding position, which transfers loads of traction to the front wheel. It’s no surprise that the TREK is a true climbing devil making even the tougher climbs feel effortless. We are actually really surprised by the amount of grip the Bontrager Chupacabra tires generate on both climbs and descents, but only in dry conditions. The geometry of the Powerfly is very balanced also on downhills. There’s a lot of weight transferred onto the handlebar, which doesn’t feel particularly safe, mainly on steep terrain. A fork with 140 mm travel would have definitely been a better match, especially because the rear shock soaks up pretty much everything it comes across. The bike loves fast corners but feels slightly lazy on narrow sections.

Trek Powerfly 8 FS

If you’re looking for a sporty E-Mountainbike that climbs well and offers a good level of support, the Trek Powerfly 8 FS might just be the bike you’re looking for. Unfortunately, on downhills the low-profiled tires and the fork limit the potential of the bike.

– Good propulsion – Great climber – Plush rear end

– The fork limits the bikes potential – Tires lack grip in wet conditions

The Trek Powerfly is a very well sorted package and was one of the first e-bikes to win us over.

The Powerfly 8 is Trek's 130mm travel full suspension e-bike. Based off the Fuel EX-platform, this bike is fully compliant with e-bike regulations and performs well on the trail. - Mtbr.com

Trek's pedal-assist mountain bike is wildly popular in Europe—and it just made the leap to the US

ebiketips

Trek’s new Powerfly range starts at £2,100 for the hardtail Powerfly 5 and this Powerfly 9 FS is the second-most expensive bike in the range at £4,275; only the long-travel Powerfly 9 LT (£4,350) is more. Four grand is a lot for a bike but you’re getting a lot of bike: This is a hugely capable mid-travel suspension mountain bike with Bosch’s top-tier motor and biggest battery. It’s fun to ride over pretty much any terrain and it has enough range for big rides.

Trek Powerfly FS 9 LT review

Assisted long travel trail bike

Sterling Lorence

Oli Woodman

Long wheelbase makes for almost absurd stability, superb mechanical grip from well-matched and supportive suspension, Drivetrain and motor play very well together, components list features plenty of excellent e-bike specific parts

Flimsy tyres are at odds with the rest of the bike, New ‘e-mtb’ power mode perhaps a little too keen for some

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

Trek’s second generation Powerfly e-bike builds on the success of its predecessor but tweaks to the Bosch motor and new e-bike specific components make for an altogether more pleasing ride.

  • Cannondale Moterra 1 first ride review
  • ABS braking is coming to an e-bike near you

Trek Powerfly FS 9 LT spec overview

  • Frame: Alpha Platinum Aluminium, ABP, EVO link, E2 tapered head tube, Knock Block, internal derailleur and dropper post routing, integrated battery, G2 Geometry, Boost148, 150 mm travel
  • Motor: Bosch Performance CX, 250 watt, 75 Nm with Bosch Powerpack Performance 500 downtube battery
  • Fork: Fox Performance 36 Float, GRIP adjustable damper, E2 tapered steerer, Boost110, G2 Geometry w/51 mm offset, e-bike optimised, 150 mm travel
  • Rear shock: RockShox Deluxe RT3, RE:aktiv 3-position damper, tuned by Trek Suspension Lab, 205x57.5 mm
  • Drivetrain: SRAM EX1, 8-speed
  • Brakes: SRAM Guide RE hydraulic disc
  • Wheelset: Bontrager Powerline Comp 40, 54T Rapid Drive, Tubeless Ready, Boost110 front, Boost148 rear
  • Tyres: Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance, Tubeless, 27.5x2.80in

I tested the longer travel Powerfly FS 9 LT, which is the spendiest of two longer travel models with 150mm of travel at each end. These sit alongside two shorter travel full-suspension Powerflys and several electrified Powerfly hardtails.

For 2018 there’s a new front triangle, which positions its battery lower than before yet still retains its tool-free easy access and ability to be charged while fitted to the bike. Each model now gets a 500Wh battery as standard, too.

The Powerfly boosts its rider’s efforts thanks to a 250w Bosch Performance Line CX motor and accompanying handlebar-mounted Purion control unit. New for 2018 is Bosch’s e-mtb motor mode, which has been developed as a set and forget mode for those who don’t wish to flick through the bike’s four assistance settings.

This new setting automatically shifts between the assistance usually offered between existing Tour to Turbo modes depending on the torque it reads from its riders input. It’s also said to save on battery power.

Trek’s concentric pivot ABP suspension system remains, and so does the simple yet effective Mini Link feature – a flippable chip at the seatstay that offers +/0.5 degrees at the head angle and +/- 5mm at the bottom bracket.

The 9 LT also sports Trek’s proprietary RE:aktiv shock, which uses regressive valving and aims to provide support against pedaling forces and g-outs but remain sensitive to even the smallest of impacts.

Rotating at each Boost axle is an all-new wheelset configured specifically to deal with the extra heft of a bike such as this one. The new Powerline plus-size wheels use 32 hole rims with thicker sidewall rims that are built to downhill standards. These replace the thinner rims that dinged relatively easily on the last Powerfly.

In a similar vein, Trek has opted for an e-bike specific Fox 34, with thicker stanchions and lowers compared to a regular 34 in order to support the higher loads and forces found encountered with these weightier bikes. SRAM’s excellent 8-speed EX1 drivetrain s has also been carried over from last year’s model.

The brakes are also e-bike specific, namely SRAM’s Guide REs which mate the four piston calipers from the company’s Code gravity brakes to the familiar Guide levers.

Stable and supportive ride from all but its tyres

A full day on the loose, steep and rocky trails of Verbier formed an ideal playing ground for the Powerfly, and our route was one that would’ve proved vicious for most mere mortals without the assistance of a motor.

I was encouraged to try the bike using Bosch’s latest e-mtb mode, which dished out power intelligently depending on what I was doing with my legs.I found this worked well most of the time but I did switch down to tour/eco modes for technical sections, where I found the e-mtb mode would give a little too much gogo juice.

Talking of juice, our Powerfly drained itself of a majority of its charge within 35km. That doesn’t sound like a huge number but when you consider the 1,800+ metres of climbing and stop/start nature of our ride I feel it represents quite extreme usage.

With a leg over the Powerfly you may need to recalibrate your sense of what you can now climb. This is by no means something that is unique to the Powerfly, but is something true of most electric mountain bikes. By centering my weight, shifting down a cog and raising my cadence I could winch up steep climbs that my legs alone simply wouldn’t carry me up.

The frame’s 475mm chainstays are a byproduct of Bosch’s lengthy motor yet they do bring benefits of their own. The bike climbs exceptionally, for example, and the additional length at the rear triangle no doubt contributes to the high levels of stability this chassis provides. The flipside of these stays is that low speed switchback climbs require careful power management and body positioning to avoid embarrassing understeer moments. It’s a trade-off I was more than happy to ride around.

The rest of the geometry is pretty sorted, too, with a 66 degree head angle (in the low setting) and a 478mm reach figure for the size 21.5in bike I was riding. I swapped out the standard fit 60mm stem for a 40mm part which played perfectly with the Powerfly’s 750mm handlebars but did rob me of some important room, which was certainly noticeable on the climbs. Some of this was probably down to the slackish 71.5 degree seat angle, though.

I found that the plus-sized footprint of the Powerfly – with its 2.8in Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres – provided ample grip across a wide range of surface, but they do squirm when you push hard and generally feel a bit vague for those who are used to tyres with a stiffer sidewall.

This is in contrast to the e-bike specific Fox fork and Rockshox Deluxe RT3 Re;Aktiv damper, which both provide a balanced and supportive tune that refused to be flustered.

I think it’s fair to say that both grip and stability levels are nearing that of what you’d normally find on a well configured downhill bike

Abundant grip levels and extra bulk make for a bike that would rather stay on the ground, but pushing harder found the Powerfly will leap with surprising grace should you want to get airborne. I think it’s fair to say that both grip and stability levels are nearing that of what you’d normally find on a well configured downhill bike.

It’s important to shut the assistance off when things point steeply down, though, because not doing so and getting a crank in where you’d normally do so on an unassisted bike can lead to a whole new world of sketchiness. Trust me, I stacked it while doing so.

SRAM’s EX1 deserves plenty of praise, too. Its smooth, one-click-at-a time action feeds the next gear in a way that simply doesn’t happen with a regular drivetrain. There’s none of the nasty chain pinging, cassette snatching issues that e-bikes with regular drivetrains often exhibit. Also from SRAM are the Guide RE brakes, which provide the same powerful and controlled braking that we’ve come to expect from the brand.

My takeaway is that this new, more capable Powerfly can make its own fun where you’d normally be hurting, and its stability on descents means you needn’t miss out on more technical downhills, either.

Its sheer thirst for mileage means it’s perfect for the adventurer who wants to run their own uplift, and if that’s your bag then I reckon there are very few tools that will do the job better.

Trek’s evolved Powerfly e-bike might make you want to stop taking the chairlift

Trek Powerfly

Ask Bicycling: Is riding an e-bike a real workout?

Most of the structural changes on the new Powerfly revolve around integrating the battery into the bike's aluminum frame. The downtube now cleanly surrounds the Bosch 500wh battery where it rested on top of the 2017 model’s. It can be removed without tools and transported with a built-in handle. The 2018 Powerfly FS's geometry and 130mm travel ABP suspension design with Evo Link are identical to the 2017 version.

Trek still uses Bosch’s Performance CX 250 motor that produces 75mn of torque, but has updated the controller to the Purion Performance unit with digital display. The backlit display shows mode and battery life, as well as basic speed and distance information.

Trek found that some of its e-mtb riders used the different assist modes instead of shifting gears, so the company's product team developed a new Emtb mode that automatically switches assist modes depending on the rider's torque input. This is supposed to offer a seamless feel on the trail, and is supposed to encourage riders to shift gears more often. There are still four modes: Eco, Tour, Turbo, and Emtb , which replaces the 2017 model's Sport mode. A walk mode is included to assist in hike-a-bike situations.

Trek makes fourteen different Powerfly models, but only offers all of them in Europe (more on this in a bit). For the North American market, Trek will offer two full suspension and two hardtail Powerfly models for 2018.

The full suspension Powerfly 7 FS Plus comes with 27.5x2.8” tires on all sizes and costs $5,000. All other models are outfitted with 29x2.4” tires on sizes 17.5” and larger; 15.5” and 14.5” sizes use 27.5x2.35” tires. These models include the Powerfly 5 FS at $4,500 and two hardtail Powerfly 5 models – a men’s and a women’s that cost $3,500.

Trek’s goal with the Powerfly is to match the feel of a regular mountain bike as much as possible. I traveled to Verbier, Switzerland to sample the new Powerfly and after a day in the Alps I’d have to say Trek did a pretty good job.

Bicycle accessory, Electronic device, Cyclocomputer, Technology, Bicycle, Bicycle part, World, Bicycle handlebar, Gadget, Display device,

On the trail the overall handing and suspension performance of the Powerfly FS reminded my very much of a Fuel EX, except I felt superhuman at the pedals even though the e-bike is noticeably heavier than the non-motorized version. Power comes on smoothly in all modes, although in technical and low-traction situations I occasionally found the Turbo mode a handful. The new Emtb mode, however, provided ample assist without the surge I sometimes felt in Turbo. Interestingly, our test bikes were programed to European specifications so power tapered off at around 15MPH instead of the 20MPH that we enjoy here in the States for class-one electric assist bicycles.

Tire, Wheel, Bicycle wheel, Bicycle frame, Mountain bike, Bicycle tire, Sports equipment, Helmet, Bicycles--Equipment and supplies, Bicycle helmet,

Like most pedal assist E-bikes I’ve tested, this one tends to work best at a higher pedaling cadence . I tend to have a slow, grinding pedal stroke that didn’t really stimulate the system like a higher cadence will. Although I can’t comment on battery life because I was handed a freshly charged battery during our lunch break, it seemed on par with other bikes in its class .

Mountainous landforms, Mountain range, Mountain, Mountain bike, Mountain biking, Mountain pass, Alps, Vehicle, Ridge, Highland,

We rode a variety of alpine trails and roads that really highlighted the versatility of the bike. It has enough suspension travel for aggressive trail riding and the plus tires really help with traction and control. The only place it felt a little outgunned was on a bike park’s more advanced trails where geometry felt a little steep at times. But in most general trail riding situations, the geometry felt spot on.

RELATED:  The Place for E-Bikes

Unfortunately, the Powerfly 9 FS model I rode is not offered in North America. And I say unfortunately because it is spec’d with a (stiffer) e-bike specific Fox 34 fork, SRAM’s e-bike 8-speed drivetrain that shifts better under power, and special SRAM four-piston brakes to withstand the extra heat built up slowing the added weight of a motorized bike.

Bicycle tire, Bicycle wheel rim, Bicycle accessory, Automotive tire, Bicycle part, Rim, Spoke, Tread, Bicycle, Bicycle wheel,

Each of these components offer fairly significant performance benefits over standard-issue components so it’s a little disappointing that the Powerfly 9 FS is not offered in North America. But it is also an understandable decision on Trek’s part due to the lack of total acceptance and understanding here by the mountain bike community and land managers.

Another model I rode at this launch is the 150mm travel, full suspension, Powerfly LT. It’s not offered in North America either, but it’s worth mentioning because I had an e-bike epiphany that really opened my eyes to the possibilities these types of bikes offer. The Powerfly LT is based on Trek’s Remedy and uses the same Bosch powered system as the shorter-travel Powerfly. In addition to the increased travel, it has slacker geometry and a stouter Fox 36 fork that also has a beefed up e-bike specific chassis.

Land vehicle, Cycle sport, Cycling, Vehicle, Bicycle, Mountain bike, Mountain biking, Cross-country cycling, Outdoor recreation, Mountain bike racing,

I did two downhill runs in the bike park on the Powerfly LT, but instead of taking the gondola to the top between runs, I rode to the top. It only took me about 15 minutes to pedal the service to the top in Turbo mode, and I did so with little effort. The electric assist erased all the downsides of riding a heavier, slacker, and longer travel bike uphill. In fact I might even prefer the slacker geometry going uphill in certain technical situations. The experience was superior because instead of getting out of my groove by sitting on a lift or in a shuttle vehicle, I was pedaling the whole time. I was riding a bike more and that’s always a win in my book.

Prior to riding the Powerfly LT I liked riding e-mountain bikes but generally speaking preferred to ride my regular bike or enduro motorcycle. This Powerfly LT bike makes me want one in my life. Although I love riding the shorter travel e-mountain bikes, for me this longer travel version is where it’s at – I just wish it and more like it could be offered here. My guess is that as things evolve bikes like this will become available and hopefully more places to ride them will follow. Mammoth Mountain’s bike park recently approved e-bike use on its trails so we’re getting there.

New 2019 Trek Powerfly – First Impressions.

The not-so-minor details.

2019 Trek Powerfly

Trek Bicycles

https://www.trekbikes.com/

4499 - 8499

Aesthetically clean. Bosch e-MTB mode for a natural feel. Considered spec.

Long chainstays.

The bike industry is in full e-swing, with new e-bikes releasing faster than iPhones or GoPros. While Trek might have been a little late to the party – with their first pedal assist mountain bike released just in 2016 – their new 2019 models, however, send a strong message. A lot of resources have been thrown behind their electric bike program, and it certainly will pay off, the new Powerfly is a very well considered package.

Hear our first impressions in the video below.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

What’s new?

  • Three models available with the addition of a new LT (long travel dual suspension model) with 160mm travel forks, 150mm travel in the rear.
  • A new OCLV carbon frame version of the Powerfly LT (ooooh yeah!).
  • All three models; hardtail, FS, LT use a new fully integrated Bosch battery inside the downtube.
  • New Bosch e-MTB mode equipped.
  • E-bike specific forks, more robust and tuned specifically.
  • Four-piston brakes on all LT models, and sintered brake pads across the range.
  • SRAM Eagle on higher models with the new steel Eagle NX cassette.
  • 2.8″ Bontrager XR4 tyres with reinforced sidewalls.
  • The integrated battery allows for water bottle and tool storage mounts.
  • New and improved Bontrager Line dropper post.
  • Same frame geometry as 2018 FS and hardtail models.

Long travel Powerfly, where have you been all this time?

Previously only available from select overseas markets, the LT is finally coming Down Under. The Powerfly we reviewed last year was the FS model, with 130mm travel front and back. Certainly a great bike, but it didn’t take much for it to feel a little under-gunned when we took it to more technical trails or descents.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

It’s as if the venerable Trek Slash got struck by lightning, or fell into the cauldron of magic potion, this is a long travel bike with superpowers! The suspension felt like what we’d expect from Trek; balanced, consistent and well suited to the cause.

We spent a big day riding big mountains on the Powerfly LT 7 Plus – a non-Australian spec model – we will see two models of the LT, the LT 9 and carbon LT 9.7 pictured below.

It’s as if the venerable Trek Slash got struck by lightning, or fell into the cauldron of magic potion, this is a long travel bike with superpowers!

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

A long travel model, however, is just the ticket to unlocking the Powefly’s true potential. We often don’t see the point in an e-MTB with less than 150mm of travel, with so much power at your disposal, lugging a larger bike around is no big deal. When you need a little more cushion for the push’n, a 160mm travel fork is just what you need to let the brakes off and push it.

Bosch’s new e-MTB mode.

While it’s simply just a mode setting, it makes the world of difference to how the bike rides. Selecting e-MTB mode on the display unit is like putting your camera into auto-mode, no, much better than that.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

The whole idea of the e-MTB mode is to naturalise the feeling of power delivery, so the response feels much more like a normal mountain bike under pedalling forces – it delivers a less aggressive power output if you’re pedalling slowly and gently, ramping up the juice when you’re hammering at the pedals.

The whole idea of e-MTB mode is to naturalise the feeling of power delivery, so the response feels much more like a normal mountain bike under pedalling forces

Read more about Bosch’s e-MTB mode and how it works here: Bosch e-MTB mode explained.

We tried riding in the three other modes – Eco, Tour, Turbo – and kept returning to e-MTB, it’s ideal.

Same geometry as 2018 models.

While it wasn’t music to our ears, news that the Powerfly’s frame geometry remained the same as last year, we do agree that Trek has made their decision after much consideration.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

When reviewing the Powerfly FS 7 last year, we had criticisms of the long chainstays making it harder to muscle what are already heavy bikes around on the trails. At 475mm it’s one of the longest out there, what does that mean?

See our review of the 2018 model Powerfly FS here.

Well, with so much bike behind you, lifting the front end up by the bars requires a whole lot of effort, and on the trails that translates to a bike that you become a bit of a passenger on, steering it through the trails rather than hopping or manualling around. We’ve ridden plenty of e-bikes with shorter stays and despite the inherent weight of a motorised bike, you can still ride them like a regular bike.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

On the flipside, a longer rear centre makes the Powerfly the best climbing e-bike we’ve ridden, hands down. Even with a tall 160mm fork, we took it up the nastiest inclines on the slipperiest surface with very little effort, the front end never lifted or wandered side to side. Their climbing manners are first rate.

Their climbing manners are first rate.

Climbs vs descents, stability vs agility, Toyota Landcruiser Troopy vs Suzuki Vitari? Everybody is different, we understand that. Though a middle-ground to build a more agile bike even at the sacrifice of climbing ability would be our preference.

E-Bike spec in the bag.

With the component manufactures sorting out their end of the deal and producing more parts that meet the demands of e-bikes, Trek has more to choose from. The 2019 range will have more four-piston brakes specced, tougher tyres, steel Eagle NX 12-speed cassettes and more robust forks that are tuned specifically for the heavier bikes.

trek powerfly fs 8 lt

Final thoughts.

While our opinions on the frame geometry remain, we appreciate that we might approach e-bikes different to others. The new bikes are very dialled, the new integrated battery will fool anyone from afar thinking it’s a regular bike, it is so aesthetically clean. And the addition of Bosch’s e-MTB mode is really clever, the bike rides very naturally.

We’re hoping to score a ride on the Powerfly 9.7 LT, to see how the OCLV carbon frame changes things, so keep your eyes out for more.

…outstanding fun with steep descents and river crossings followed by challenging climbs which the Powerfly managed with such ease! …I was surprised at the sub-20-mile range I achieved on this test-ride…

  6. Trek Powerfly FS vs. Powerfly LT

The longer fork on the Powerfly LT gives it a 1° slacker head angle than the FS. The unweighted bottom bracket height is 8 mm higher, but once sag is at 30% there's only 2 mm height increase left. On paper, there's little difference between the bikes; the LT's reach is a touch shorter, and its stack is a little higher.
