With its vibrant public art, booming craft beer scene, iconic museums and a state park smack dab in its center, Indianapolis is much more than just the host city for the largest single-day sporting event on the planet, the Indianapolis 500 .

While car culture is indeed king in Indy, countless public trails and a central canal make the capital of Indiana easy to explore by foot, scooter, bike, kayak or other means. Everywhere around town, public art installations shine.

It’s no surprise that many visitors flock to this vibrant Midwest metropolis. So here’s our list of everything you need to know before visiting Indianapolis.

Stay in the Fountain Square, Chatham Arch or Broad Ripple neighborhoods to experience small-town charm in the city

While Indianapolis is a major city, each of its neighborhoods has a distinct personality that lends a small-town feel. If you don’t want to stay in a hotel downtown, opt for a boutique hotel or Airbnb in a neighborhood that matches your mood.

Southeast of downtown, Fountain Square is dotted with 19th-century homes, green spaces and (naturally) fountains. Art galleries and local theaters thrive in Chatham Arch, part of the Mass Avenue Cultural District . Home to Butler University, Broad Ripple Village offers a lively social scene. Indianapolis’ newest neighborhood, the Bottleworks District was once the largest Coca-Cola bottling plant in Indiana; today, it’s anchored by the luxury boutique Bottleworks Hotel  (which once housed company executives’ offices) and a food hall with more than 21 local vendors.

Whether you choose to stay downtown or in a neighborhood enclave, you’re bound to experience Indiana’s small-town feel and meet down-to-earth, friendly people.

Park your car and explore Circle City on foot

Indianapolis is known as “Circle City” because of Monument Circle , a plaza at the heart of the city where four streets converge: East and West Market streets and North and South Meridian streets. An appealing free attraction , the grand Soldiers and Sailors Monument rises at the circle’s center. This intersection isn’t the only reason Indianapolis is called the “Crossroads of America”: the city is also at the junction of four major Interstate highways (Interstates 65, 69, 70 and 74).

Indianapolis’ downtown is on the smaller side and can be easily explored on foot. Thanks to its grid system, the city is easy to navigate – just be aware of a number of one-way streets. While public transportation is limited to the public bus system , the network is extensive. You’ll likely have to hop in a car to visit key sites that are away from the city core, including the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Indy has much to see by bike

Indianapolis was the backdrop for Breaking Away , a 1979 hit movie about a working-class teen obsessed with the Italian cycling team. Some 40 years later, the city remains a fabulous place to explore on two wheels. Pick up your ride from the  Indiana Pacers bike share , or catch one of the many Lime scooters found across the city.

Bike trails crisscross Indy. The 8.1 bikeway the  Indianapolis Cultural Trail  loops through downtown, with three spurs. The northeastern one runs along Massachusetts Ave before connecting to another popular path, the Monon Trail , while the southeastern spur follows Virginia Ave into the Fountain Square neighborhood. To the south, a third spur connects the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium.

Dress for fluctuating weather

Midwestern weather can swing from sunny and warm to rainy and chilly, so you’ll want to dress in layers. The summer’s average daily temperature lingers above 74°F, with an average high of 83°F during July, the peak month of summer. (Bring a swimsuit to cool off in a local  pool or water park .) The winter season lasts for a solid three months, from December through the end of February, with average daily highs below 46°F, so bring a good winter jacket.

Fall is one of the best times to visit Indianapolis, when the air is crisp and the trees are dressed in their autumnal best. Spring is lovely, too, with mild weather and flowers popping up in gardens across the city.

See downtown differently with an offbeat method of transport

You can also explore downtown Indianapolis with more unusual modes of transportation. Rent a swan pedal boat or kayak at Wheel Fun Rentals at Canal Walk and paddle the Indiana Central Canal , a 3-mile commercial waterway. Otherwise, hop on a surrey, chopper, quad sport or deuce coupe and ride along the many trails of the 267-acre White River State Park , Indianapolis’ green jewel

Plan your visit around the Indy 500

Indianapolis’ key annual event, the Indy 500  brings thousands of spectators and loads of excitement to the 2.5-mile-long, oval-shaped track of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A permanent seating capacity of 257,325 makes it easy to find tickets. Just be sure to reserve in advance: ticket sales usually open in late fall for the Memorial Day weekend event.

If you’re not here for the big event, you can still experience the celebrated race's history year-round at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , which is home to one of the world's largest collections of vintage race cars, including more than 30 Indy 500 winners. The museum offers 30-, 60- and 90-minute tours that take visitors behind the scenes at the Speedway, which dates all the way back to 1909.

A pint of beer on the bar of Daredevil Brewery, Indianapolis, Indiana, Midwest, USA

Download the Indy Craft Pass to best experience Indy’s hoppin’ brew scene

Indianapolis is an increasingly popular destination for craft-beer aficionados (and was recently voted a Top Five Beer City ). Five blocks from the Speedway,  Daredevil Brewing Co  offers a wide array of craft beers plus a lively 8000-sq-ft patio. Chilly Water Brewing Company pairs its hoppy IPAs with hoagies, while  Bier Brewery specializes in Belgian dubbels and German hefeweizens. To enjoy a beer while touring the city, step aboard the Pickled Pedaler ’s 12-passenger BYOB bike. And be sure to download the Indy Craft Pass , a mobile passport app that maps out the city’s best craft breweries and distilleries: if you check in at eight locations, you’ll earn an Indy Craft Pass T-shirt.

Don’t leave without trying a Hoosier pork tenderloin sandwich

You mustn’t leave Indy without sampling Indiana’s unofficial state lunch: the Hoosier pork tenderloin sandwich. This mega pork cutlet is served breaded, fried and nestled between two slices of bread. The sandwich is so popular that the state has even created a Tenderloin Lovers Culinary Trail . You can find the sandwich on menus across town; we especially love the spicy version at the classic Steer-In  drive-in restaurant.

Save room for a slice of Indiana's state pie, too.  Hoosier sugar cream pie  is made from a single crust with a simple and simply delicious filling made from butter, vanilla, cream and brown sugar.

Best Times To Visit Indianapolis

The best time to visit Indianapolis is between May and August for the pleasant weather (averages in mid-80s) and a plethora of outdoor events, like the iconic Indianapolis 500. December is another festive time when downtown Indy twinkles for the holidays (if you like winter weather). Pull out the sweaters and explore Indy in September and October for fall colors, Oktoberfest celebrations and everything orange, from the pumpkins to the trees. Indianapolis gets bitter cold and quiet as soon as the New Year's celebrations end.

Indianapolis 500 milk

Indy 500 winners drink milk. Louis Meyer did so first in 1936, asking for buttermilk after crossing the finish line in steamy conditions. Drivers celebrated with milk intermittently until the mid 1950s, when milk producers became a race sponsor. A gulp from a bottle and a large pour over the winner's head have been a tradition since.

The museum, located inside the 2.5-mile oval, is closed for renovations . The plan is to reopen in April 2025.

Indy 500 vs. Formula 1

The cars that compete in the Indy 500 are part of the IndyCar Series, a North American open-wheel series. Formula 1 is a worldwide series. Cars competing in the Indy 500 exceed 240 mph on the straightaways at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. F1 cars don't reach such speeds because they race on road and street courses with frequent turns. Here's more on the differences between the series .

Is Indy faster than NASCAR?

Stock cars can top 200 mph, but they don't reach the speeds Indy cars reach. Joey Logano earned the pole position at the 2024 Daytona 500 with a lap of 181.947. Here's more on the differences between the series .

Kyle Larson is attempting the Indy 500-NASCAR 'Double'

The 2021 NASCAR Cup champion is willing to race almost anything with wheels, and this is his first chance in the IndyCar Series. He plans to race 500 miles in Indy, then travel to Charlotte, N.C., to race 600 miles in a Cup car. That's 1,100 miles total, if he completes the task. He qualified for the middle of Row 2 for Indy.

Here's his schedule between Indy 500 and NASCAR duties .

Indy 500 Snake Pit

This year's lineup of EDM stars includes Excision, Dom Dolla, Gryffin, Sullivan King and Timmy Trumpet.

But why the Snake Pit? It used to be more of an informal title of an infield area where almost anything – anything – could happen. Though Speedway officials made the facility more family friendly, the name lives on in the concert.

What is the Indy 500 pace car?

A Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray , the 21st iteration of the famous Chevy sports car, will lead the field of 33 to green. It's Chevy's 35th 500 pace car overall (dating to 1948). Baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. will drive.

Celebrities at the Indy 500

∎ Indiana Fever legend Tamika Catchings is the 500 Festival Parade grand marshal on Saturday, May 25. Catchings has led child literacy efforts and opened businesses in Indianapolis.

∎ Jordin Sparks will sing the national anthem for the second time. The "American Idol" winner and actress also sang the anthem in 2015.

How long does the Indy 500 take?

Indy 500: How to get to the race, where to park and what roads will be closed in 2024

travel time to indianapolis

The hardest part of attending the Indianapolis 500 is getting to the track. A close second is leaving it. Or maybe, depending on your past experiences, you might reverse those two.

Either way, this guide has creative ways to get to the race from car or bike or shuttle to seat, and then back again. The green flag doesn't wave until 12:45 p.m., but to keep the masses moving smoothly, Indianapolis Motor Speedway recommends you arrive at a gate before 10 a.m. on race day — May 26.

Here's what to know to keep your commute to the Indy 500 as painless as possible.

Where to park for the Indy 500

Parking for the Indy 500 race day is sold out, according to the speedway. If you were fortunate enough to grab a spot, you can find detailed instructions on how to find your lot at tinyurl.com/5axss6fb .

And if you didn't reserve a parking place at the track? Several surrounding homes rent out spots on their lawn, and the town of Speedway's Facebook page has been sharing nearby businesses who are offering spaces on their property on race day as well.

The story behind the beloved song: Why authors of 'Back Home Again' were accused of stealing from another iconic Indiana song

Best ways to travel to the Indy 500 without driving yourself

The most convenient way to attend the race is probably to purchase a home by the track or make friends with someone who's already done so. Barring that, these methods will help you arrive as swiftly and headache-free as possible.

Ride a bike: Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Bike Indianapolis and IU Health Momentum Indy have put together a race day commute. Participants will meet at The Amp at 16 Tech at either 7:15 or 9:15 a.m., roll out behind a police escort and park their bikes inside a gated and monitored corral at the track. Cyclists can return to The Amp after the race in guided ride groups. Tickets cost $25 for adults. Children ages 17 and younger ride free with an adult admission ticket. Register and find departure times at tinyurl.com/4b67kmeb .

Take a shuttle: Round-trip shuttle services are $50 and available from downtown Indianapolis or the Indianapolis International Airport. Find more information at tinyurl.com/34bxj6m9 .

Ride a bus: Routes 10, 15 and 25 usually take passengers to the vicinity of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Buses have to follow the same road closures as other traffic, so passengers should plan to take an early bus and expect delays after the race, said Carrie Black, IndyGo's director of communications. Check indygo.net for the most up-to-date information and routes.

If you're looking to travel to the Indy 500 from outside the IndyGo bus route, check out Rally , a chartered bus rideshare program that will book a bus when enough riders request a certain route. Join confirmed bus bookings and request new ones at rally.co/indy-500 .

Rideshare and taxi: The drop-off and pickup spot will be at the corner of 10th and Polco Streets.

Indianapolis road closures on race day

  • Starting at 5 a.m. on race day, Georgetown Road will be closed south of 25th Street to vehicular traffic, according to a news release from the town of Speedway .
  • Starting about 11 a.m., closures will occur between 16th Street and Olin Avenue. People will not be able to drive north on Polco from 10th Street at that time, according to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
  • From about noon until the end of the race, 16th Street will be closed between Olin Avenue on the east and the 16th Street roundabout on the west, according to the town of Speedway. Vehicles driving east on Crawfordsville Road from the west will be turned around at the 16th Street roundabout, and those heading west on 16th Street from downtown will be directed south on Olin Avenue.

Find Indianapolis Motor Speedway's traffic map at tinyurl.com/5axss6fb and more information on the closures from the town of Speedway at tinyurl.com/2jh3ryjf .

INDIANAPOLIS –  Kyle Larson's qualifying effort at Indianapolis Motor Speedway earned him the fifth starting position for the 2024 Indianapolis 500. The effort was just the beginning of a busy night of racing for the driver of the HendrickCars.com  Chevrolet.

Following the conclusion of qualifying, Larson made his way to the airport and departed for North Wilkesboro Speedway to race in the NASCAR All-Star Race.

RELATED: See the scenes from Larson at Indianapolis

Beginning with the morning practice session, Larson and his No. 17 Arrow McLaren entry chose to take to the speedway to fine tune the car before his qualifying attempt. Despite a small slide during the session, the team gathered the knowledge they needed ahead of qualifying.

Larson, the seventh car to take to the track in the Fast 12, jumped to the top of the charts at 232.788 mph. The time would be enough to lock the No. 17 entry into the Fast 6 where the remaining cars would all make one single-car run to decide the first two rows for the main event. On his lone attempt, Larson's speed of 232.846 mph earned him the fifth starting position.

"I think just a great team really," Larson said before heading to the airport. "They prepared an awesome race car that has stuck to the race track that also has speed. Qualifying went a lot better than I ever hoped or anticipated. Just proud of everybody at Arrow McLaren, proud of everybody at Hendrick Motorsports that have been involved in this."

"Now switch the mindset to the heavy stock car and try to go figure out North Wilkesboro. Excited to get there and have a chance a million bucks."

Due to Larson's delay in travel plans, NASCAR officials have moved the start time of the All-Star Race to 8:30 p.m. ET. Tune in on FS1, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90) to catch all the action from North Wilkesboro.

Travel time from Atlanta to Indianapolis

How long does it really take to fly from Atlanta to Indianapolis? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach Indianapolis, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Thursday, 11:31 am :  start in Atlanta drive for about 24 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 12:50 pm at the latest

12:25 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

1:25 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

1:55 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

2:10 pm :  board Delta Air Lines Inc. flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

2:22 pm :  so this is your actual departure time it takes the plane an average of 14 minutes to taxi to the runway

2:36 pm :  wheels up! take-off from ATL fly for about 1 hour in the air

3:41 pm (local time) :   Indianapolis International (IND) Indianapolis is the same time as Atlanta taxi on the runway for an average of 5 minutes to the gate

3:46 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at IND deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 24 minutes to your destination

4:10 pm (local time) :  arrive in Indianapolis

Total travel time: 5 hours

How far is Indianapolis from Atlanta? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 427 miles or 686 km

Flight time: 1 hour, 4 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 4 hours, 39 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 4.6x faster , and saves you about 3.5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula.

This is a relatively short flight in a private plane, but you might be planning to book a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

'It changes everything.' Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever react to WNBA move to charter flights

travel time to indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides remembers one specific time she and her team got caught up in commercial airline troubles.

Really, she said, she tries to suppress it.

"I don't remember (what airport)," Sides said. "I was trying to block that one out."

More: Caitlin Clark, welcome to WNBA... and commercial flights. 'Will definitely be an adjustment.'

More: How Caitlin Clark is inspiring Indiana's next generation of stars

Back when she was an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky between 2011-16, the team was trying to make the second game of a back-to-back. But the plane was delayed. Then delayed again. And again. Finally, canceled. The team, coaches and support staff had to sleep in the airport while waiting for a 6 a.m. flight. Then, they played a game that night.

But now, with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert saying the league will start to use full charter flights for all 12 teams this season, commercial flight issues will be a thing of the past.

"It is incredible," Sides said. "I just sent a message out to the players last night when the news hit, just that this is what they deserve. They deserve this, and it changes everything. It changes their rest, it changes their rehab... Instead of getting up at like, early in the morning to get back here, then they don't have to practice at four o'clock, five o'clock in the evening. It changes everything."

With these new charter flights, the only thing they'll be losing out on is airline miles.

"I guess I'll have to book some extra flights," Fever center Aliyah Boston joked.

The league doesn't have a specific timeline yet for when charter flights will be available for all 12 teams. Engelbert said the program will be implemented "as soon as we can logistically get planes in places," but added it could take up to a couple weeks or a month, meaning teams will likely start the regular season flying commercially.

More: WNBA plans to provide full-time charter flights for Indiana Fever, league teams this season

The Fever flew commercially from Indianapolis International Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth for their preseason game against the Dallas Wings last week, and they were met with fans wanting signatures and media taking videos.

"There were people (in the airport) like 'Oh my gosh, can we get signatures, can we get your signatures?'" Boston said. "And obviously you guys saw people like following us with a camera. But I mean, that's just what it is, we understand. So I'm really glad that we're taking these precautions, especially with charter."

Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has been the main reason for a lot of the media attention the Fever have been getting recently. Pacers Sports & Entertainment beefed up its security during Fever travel because of Clark's popularity, and she was the subject of most of the videos about the Fever's arrival in Dallas.

Now, Clark and the Fever will have more privacy when they travel. And in the 27th year of the WNBA, it's been a long time coming.

"I'm just super excited for the players who have been in this league for a really long time and have really deserved this for years and years and years," Clark said. "I'm just excited, I'm thankful, at whatever point that it is, that it happens. It'll be great for us, it'll make recovery easier, it'll make travel easier, it just makes life a lot easier for a lot of people... I'm just very fortunate to come to this league and have this opportunity the first year that I'm here."

Boston spent her rookie season flying to games commercially — a stark change from her four years at South Carolina, where she and the Gamecocks flew charter to every game. For the second-year center, who stands at 6-4, flying charter isn't only about security. It's about being able to stretch out on planes, get back home after games, and have extra time to rest.

"You play your game, you get back on that plane, and you get to sleep in your own bed," Boston said. "That's really what you know, we've been used to in college. So coming here and making that change, you know, is going to be great for us."
