No, the ticket prices are exactly the same. However, the Matterhorn app has a smaller range of tickets to choose from. In the Matterhorn app you can also load ski passes onto the SBB Swisspass. The Matterhorn app is available to download free from the App Store  or Google Play store .

With the half-fare card/GA you get 50% off the following tickets:

  • Single & return tickets to all stations in Switzerland (until and including Testa Grigia)
  • Peak2Peak ticket, Gornergrat round trip ticket
  • Kombi-tickets
  • Bike passes

On the Peak Pass you get a 25% discount with the half-fare card/GA.

You can buy the reduced tickets online if you have a SwissPass with a valid half-fare/GA travelcard. The ticket will be charged directly to your card. Please remember to carry the SwissPass card with you (mobile SwissPass is not possible). Otherwise, we ask you to buy your reduced tickets at one of our sales points upon presentation of your reduction card.

If you already own a KeyCard, you can load the online ticket onto your card. It’s activated and valid after just a few minutes (no more than 30 minutes). With a newly purchased KeyCard dispatched by post, we will mail your ticket to any address in Europe specified by you. From a period of five days or less before the start date of the ticket, the only available option is on-site collection.  If you choose the “pick-up” function (on-site collection), you can either get your ticket conveniently from one of the twelve ticket machines or collect it from one of our sales points (go to the desk with the “pick-up” sign). Please note that if you do not have a data carrier, a deposit of CHF 5 for each ticket will be charged at the sales point. The deposit will be refunded when you return your ticket(s) at one of our sales points in Zermatt.

People with a disability receive a discount if they are dependent on an accompanying person (note on an official document of disability). On presentation of the relevant document at our sales points, either the accompanying person or the person with a dissability will receive a free ticket.

A ‘ Swiss Travel Pass’ gives visitors to the country unlimited travel across the Swiss travel system for a continuous period of 3, 4, 8 or 15 days.

There is another variation, known as the ‘Swiss Travel Pass Flex’ which offers unlimited travel on flexible days (rather than on consecutive days).

It’s also available for either 3, 4, 8 or 15 travel days, but across an overall period of a month.

A 3-day Swiss Travel Pass costs GBP211 and an 8-day pass GBP354 (as at March 2023). You can check all the current prices at their website

A second class return ticket from Zurich to Zermatt typically costs CHF118. From Geneva it’s slightly less at CHF98.

However, if you want to break your journey over several days and spend more time in Switzerland, or you plan to take advantage of the discounts offered in Zermatt (see below), then a Swiss Travel Pass is likely to be a better option.

The ‘Swiss Travel Pass Flex’ is typically a better choice than the regular ‘Swiss Travel Pass’ if you’re plan to stay put between journeys (say if you are coming to Zermatt for a week).

The Swiss Travel Pass Youth ticket means that young people under 26 can claim a 15% discount on the pass.

Children under 16 do not need a ticket at all, and travel for free as long as they are travelling with an adult who has a valid ticket.

One single ticket

The way the Swiss Travel Pass works is that you either download it to your phone, or with a physical copy, simply sign your ticket before starting your first journey.

You then have to show it the ticket inspector together with your passport or identity card when asked.

It can be useful for any stays in Switzerland as users are eligible for unlimited use of public transport in more than 90 towns and cities around this country, and free entry to more than 500 museums.

Remember that all these lifts are included in a regular Zermatt lift pass, if you are buying one of these to go skiing, and that the bus service around Zermatt is already free for all lift pass holders.

Access to Zermatt’s excellent museum is also free for holders of the Swiss Travel Pass.

However, if you’re planning to come to Zermatt for a short trip, or for our many non-ski activities , then these discounts represent an extra bonus from the Swiss Travel Pass.

Peak Pass Benefits

Mountain lovers visiting Zermatt can enjoy a whole range of benefits from the Peak Pass starting with free mountain railway and cable car rides.

Free Train Rides, Mountain Railways & Cable Cars

One of the biggest costs during any visit to Zermatt is the cablecars and mountain railways. Trust me, I have spent hundreds on visits to Zermatt, just getting to the best hikes and viewpoints. However, with the Peak Pass you can save a whole lot of money because you can take unlimited rides on the following main lines:

  • Gornergrat Bahn
  • Matterhorn glacier paradise to Klein Matterhorn)
  • Sunnegga-Rothorn
  • Train rides to Randa & Täsch

Keep in mind that the Peak Pass includes all major railways and cablecars but not every lift on the mountain. Most simple chairlifts & ski lifts are not included in the pass. However, with the three major ones covered, you will likely be able to go almost anywhere you want for free, like to the

  • Klein Matterhorn

You can even use it to get to and from your car when it is parked in Täsch (as you can’t drive it into Zermatt) or to go on the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge above Randa.

Note: The Peak Pass is not valid for snowsports.

See what is included below on the simple map of Zermatt and the various gondolas and railways.

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

You should also check the Gornergrat timetable for mountain bike transport .

Glacier Palace

If you head to the top of the Klein Matterhorn there is a fantastic attraction you get to visit for free with the Peak Pass – the Glacier Palace. It is a world of ice carved from the glacier here, with tunnels and sculptures by local artists.

The price for the Peak Pass varies depending on your age and the number of days you need it for. You can buy one for one day, or up to 3 weeks. Here are the prices:
