From all-important weather and midge forecasts to interactive maps to help you discover secret castles and beaches – these handy apps can ensure you have the very best experiences in our country.

Whether you’re exploring transatlantic crossings, safe passage via the Pacific, turbulent hops over the English channel, or the quickest way to get from London to Inverness, Edinburgh-based  Skyscanner  has it all.

As the go-to price-comparison site for flights, there’s a high chance you’re reading this having already booked your flight to the UK through one of its many partners. With nearly 30 international airports in the UK, knowing the most efficient entry point in terms of price and connectivity is a process that Skyscanner makes easy. Who doesn’t use this app these days?

XE Currency

Some say that money makes the world go round, and with  XE Currency  you can keep on top of worldwide exchange rates to ensure you’re getting fair value. Even more impressive is the app’s capacity to work offline by saving the last available rate – critical when experiencing low connectivity on a remote Scottish island, or a Speyside distillery located off-the-beaten-track.

A traveller’s best friend when exploring urban settings,  Maps Me  saves incredibly detailed offline maps which allows you to easily find the nearest train station, monument or ATM, as well as a variety of amenities. Maps Me will ensure you get from breakfast to dinner via monuments, castles and cafes along the way, as Fern from Absolute Escapes often discovers on weekend breaks.

Historic Environment Scotland

A one-stop shop for information on Scotland’s iconic historic attractions, this  app  offers a bundle of useful information for more than 300 of Historic Scotland’s properties. With details on admission prices, opening times, facilities and travel, this app allow for excellent planning.

The app allows you to make a search based on particular regions and interests, incorporating specific categories for you to choose from, including sites of military, political or artistic importance. Absolute Escapes history buff Megan can’t get enough of this app on her travels.

Midges – ferocious little devils that will do all they can to hinder the enjoyment of a beautiful loch view, or your walk home after an enjoyable dram of whisky at the village pub.

As with any potential annoyance, the best thing you can do is prepare.  Smidge  is not only an insect repellent but also an innovative app that will help you prepare when heading out to the Highlands. The app features a 5-day midge forecast across Scotland, rating more than 50 locations on a scale of 1 to 5 depending on the number of biting midges there are (level 5 being the most annoying). The only one of its kind, Smidge is the perfect tool that gives you time to stock up on repellents and keep the insects out, a priority for CJ from the Absolute Escapes team when setting off towards midge infested areas.

Outer Hebrides

As one of the last untouched natural environments in Europe, Scotland’s Outer Hebrides boasts some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, home to diverse wildlife, golden beaches and clear blue water. For the best chance to locate red deer, a Hebridean icon, or even seals and dolphins, the  Outer Hebrides app  will point you in the right direction and identify realistic viewpoints to marvel at the surrounding nature. As a premiere spot for bird watching, the app also identifies places to spot Golden Eagles, Corncrakes and the Red Throated Divers, allowing you to explore the intriguing habitat of each island.

The app helped Dawn from Absolute Escapes to also discover delightful places to eat and drink on her recent trip to Barra. The app also gives users the chance to locate hundreds of events, source useful visitor information, and flick through a local shopping guide for award-winning locally produced arts and crafts.

As Pippa from Absolute Escapes is always quick to point out, Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland without a splash of rain.

At least with the  Met Office app ,  you will be prepared for all eventualities for the day ahead, whether you’ll be basking in the sunshine on top of a hill, or warming up within a distillery as the hailstones thunder down.

The last bit of advice is from Absolute Escapes’ very own Scott, who reminds us that with thousands of apps out there, it is easy to forget your own intuition. In other words, if a beautiful loch unexpectedly presents itself then don’t shy away from a photo. Or if the mist lifts to reveal a magnificent (yet manageable) peak, find your inner explorer and conquer it to enjoy an unforgettable sunset.

Go-Hi is improving the way people travel around Scotland's Highlands and Islands, offering cheaper, healthier, greener and more convenient ways of getting from A to B.

“Chuffed with my new sustainable travel choices in Aviemore using the Go-Hi app. This week I’ve walked/biked to the shops, took the bus to work and hired Enterprise Car Club car for an essential trip, which wasn’t possible by public transport.”

“So much better to walk or bike for short journeys. Being a member of the car club has been a game-changer. Not owning a car is saving me hundreds of pounds a month.”

“Using Go-Hi is a lot easier than many people think and I find it a lot more enjoyable than jumping in the car all the time. Especially for the short runs into town for things.”

21 best free travel apps for travelling around the UK in 2023

Constantly developing, expanding and responding to a demanding, connected public, apps are good for so much more than just Tinder. So which are the best free travel apps for travelling around the UK? BudgetTraveller reveals the top 20 travel apps.

Not a UK focussed app per se but Airbnb is a nice way to find great value accommodation and also very quirky local experiences across the UK. I’ve use them a few times  recently  and had a great experience every time. If you are new to Airbnb , signup using  this link  to get £25 off your first booking.

Why do you need it?

With over 600,000 listings across 30,000 cities, AirBnB not only offers a great alternative to hotels but also caters to a potentially unique experience at your favorite destinations.

Stand-out feature:

Thanks to the map search, even if you have a vague idea about the area, you could easily search the neighborhood of your choice and check out the rooms that fit your budget.

3.  Kabbee

screen568x568-3

Visiting London? Need an economic cab? Avoid the expensive Black Cabs and book a minicab. The only problem is that these cabs cannot be hailed from the street. Enter  Kabbee  , a cracking app that gives you an instant quote from 60 competing minicab firms in London, along with user reviews and ratings. You can then pick your choice ( save as a favourite for later) and choose to pay by cash, credit card or via their prepaid account facility.

Why you need it?

It offers surprisingly cheap rides no matter if you need an airport transfer or you’re just travelling around the town. It selects the right cab for you from over 70 London fleets.

Stand out feature:

For airport rides, Kabbee is nearly 25% cheaper than Uber and 35% economical than Addison Lee.

unnamed

For comprehensive information and practical guides, Tripadvisor’s  city apps  are hard to beat. All you have to do is download, register and then the app based on your location, will give you a bunch of local offers. Often neglected, the much improved Foursquare app which started out as a check-in game where users compete against friends to earn points for their check-ins has now turned into a far more useful, practical moneysaving app. Using the ‘explore nearby’ function and then checking ‘best nearby’ tab, you can find the best restaurants, shops within your current location based on your GPS location.

The ‘Specials’ tab allows you to find discounts and freebies within your vicinity.

So if you check-in at a location you can often get 10% discount on your meal or purchase while if you become the Mayor of that location, in certain locations the Mayor gets some cool freebies like a free drink or coffee.

20.  Expensify + Trail Wallet ( £1.99 )

It’s all too easy to overspend while travelling: estimating exchange rates as you shop, eating out several nights in a row, picking up the tab for friends. There are a range of apps to deal with exactly this problem and which allow you to record your expenses.

I’ve used the Expensify app previously and this handy, especially for business travellers, or for someone that likes to keep close tabs on what they are spending while they travel. With Expensify you can scan receipts, add hours you have worked, add expenses manually, add mileage and create invoices and expense reports. Drawback- If you have a lot of expenses to record, it can be time consuming to use this app and it takes a few seconds to record each item.

trail-wallet-preview

One of the best apps for tracking your daily expenditure and sticking to your budget while travelling is Trail Wallet . (Pictured above)

It’s simple and has an intuitive user-friendly interface. The app allows you to set a daily budget and then tracks your spending toward that. Trail Wallet has all has all the practicalities covered: supplies the current exchange rate ( 218 local currencies listed. Dependent on internet connection) , organises your spending by category, expenses tracking plus you can export your expenses via .csv file. The app also creates colorful pie charts to help visualise your spending.

Trail Wallet is one of the best expense tracking apps for the budget, rather than the business traveller. It is the only app here which isn’t free, but at £1.99, it’s well worth it.

To manage your travel budget effectively.

It features report management, receipt tracking in addition to mileage and time tracking. Moreover, you can snap a photo through SmartScan and it would be redirected to Expensify itself.

21. The National Trust

You can search by postcode or location and browse the interactive “favourites” list with hi-res images.

Why do we need it?

Regular alerts about the range of events hosted by the National trust throughout the year.

Thanks ever so much for this great post! The apps listed seem very helpful. I cannot wait to check out the last two. I am traveling to the UK for the first time in March, so the National Trust app will be super helpful for planning! Great job!

I would also add a decent navigational app Spyglass. It works great when offline, assuming that you pre-download the maps that you need in advance. It shows your accurate coordinates and your current position on a map, allows to mark locations and waypoints, share your locations with friends and much more. https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=c

  • Pingback: 20 best, free travel apps for travelling around the UK budgettraveller.o...... #travel #lifehack - Urban Angels

Nice presentation, looks great! You should also check out the app Digitourist. You can find all tourist activities and spots in the UK on it and it’s for free. I use it a lot when traveling, i love it, it’s so easy!

I Was interested in JourneyPro until I read the poor reviews? Seems it has fallen from grace & is now outdated…… back to searching ?

Why is Digitourist not in this list? They have all tourist activities in Europe in one simple to use concept and you can save them for later use, also you can plan and save your routes in case you go by car.

Loved the post. There really are so many apps you did a great job. Just curious why there was National Trust but not English Heritage Days Out here? They both do the same thing but with different sites. I have both and use them depending on which area of the country I’m in. I don’t use AirBnB because I’ve planned prior to my trips and just don’t normally need it.

Another app I use is the Heathrow Airport Guide. Of course, GateGuru and other apps help with that as well. Some other apps I use are currency converter, tip calculator, and TripIt.

You opened my eyes to some new apps. Thank you very much!

Smart options

Already operating smart.

There are many options for traveling smart in Scotland. The vast majority of the public transport network is now covered by smartcards , m-ticket mobile apps or smart payments.

Scroll down to see which operators are operating smart and click to find out more.

Scottish ITSO Smartcards

Scottish ITSO smartcards can now be used to store tickets for travel across multiple modes of transport and multiple transport operators. This means you can now travel on bus, rail and subway using just one ITSO smartcard, rather than needing separate smartcards or paper tickets for each operator.

Depending on the operator, tickets can be loaded onto your chosen ITSO smartcard at ticket offices, ticket vending machines, on board or in advance online and can be paid for with cash, card or contactless.

There are many ITSO smartcard options available to you. For more information, click on a Scottish ITSO smartcard below.

The perfect scotland and ireland itinerary.

The Perfect Scotland and Ireland Itinerary

Trips to Ireland and Scotland are some of my favorites to help plan. Both countries are some of my favorites and they can be easily combined. This Scotland and Ireland itinerary will help you plan the best trip!

ireland and scotland itinerary

This post contains affiliate links.

  • Should I go to Scotland or Ireland?

I often get asked by my readers which trip they should take, Ireland or Scotland? While both destinations are amazing and beautiful with so much to offer, and I always try to help them make the right choice for their needs, I don’t think this has to be an either-or choice. If you’re really struggling with the Ireland vs Scotland debate, why not choose both? When you use this itinerary to travel to Ireland and Scotland you’re getting the best of both worlds within two weeks.

Here's a Short Cut

Best Time to Visit Ireland and Scotland

Fly between scotland and ireland, ferry from ireland to scotland, ireland and scotland tours, ireland scotland map, scotland and ireland itinerary, day 1: arrive in dublin, day 2: explore dublin, day 3 & 4: take an overnight trip to the west of ireland, day 5: wicklow mountains, day 6 & 7: northern ireland and back to dublin, days 1-2: explore edinburgh , day 3: scottish highlands, days 4-6: isle of skye, day 7: depart from edinburgh.

The best time to visit Ireland and Scotland is usually off-peak in shoulder season between April-May and September-October. If you go to Ireland and Scotland during these times you’ll avoid the crowds, but still be able to enjoy nicer weather than in the winter.

Getting Between Scotland and Ireland

Trips to Ireland and Scotland offer the best of both worlds and can be done affordably too. Getting from Ireland to Scotland is easy and affordable. There are many companies that offer Ireland and Scotland tours that are great, or you can choose to take the trip on your own.

There are plenty of cheap flights from Ireland to Scotland and from Scotland to Ireland. You can fly with Ryanair for as little as $21 USD! Honestly, that’s cheaper than the cost of a nice dinner! So if you really are having a hard time deciding between Ireland and Scotland, go ahead and do both!

Learn how to find cheap flights to and from Ireland and Scotland by reading my   guide to flying for cheap or nearly free here.

ferry from Ireland to Scotland

If you have your own car or are using this itinerary as part of a larger European trip, you might also consider taking the ferry from Ireland to Scotland or vice versa. This would also work if you’re planning to fly in and out of the same airport. However, if you are flying into Scotland or Ireland and plan to fly out of a different airport, I would not recommend taking the ferry. Especially since flights between Scotland and Ireland are so cheap! If you do decide to go for a rental car in one country and leave it in the other, it will cost you at least $1500 USD ($500 for a cross border fee and $500 for a one-way rental fee). And then you have the cost of the ferry on top of that which is a few hundred dollars. While sailing across the North Chanel is truly beautiful, It’s not worth the expense if you will be renting a car.

Visiting Ireland and Scotland can seem a little daunting on your own and tours can be a great way to go if you’re feeling a little nervous about it. These are some great Ireland and Scotland tours that will help you get a great overview of these two destinations:

This interactive map should help you plan your Ireland and Scotland itinerary. You can click on each destination to find more information.

I outline a great Ireland and Scotland itinerary below, but if you want to skip all the planning and simply use this downloadable, printable, detailed itinerary , you can find it here.

Ireland Scotland Itinerary

Get the Full Itinerary I’m giving you a detailed day-by-day Ireland and Scotland itinerary. You can do this itinerary in any order you wish, but this seemed the most logical to me. This itinerary begins in Ireland and ends in Scotland, where you can choose to fly home from, or simply fly back to Ireland for a round trip ticket. The choice is yours. I recommend flying in and out of wherever you can   get the best deals .  I generally find Ireland cheaper to fly to from the United States but have occasionally found great deals to Scotland as well.

Ireland could literally take you years to explore! So if you’re planning a trip to Ireland , I’m giving you just a week in this itinerary of things to do in Ireland , but I think it will show you some of the best places to visit in Ireland in a short amount of time. If you’re interested in a longer, more detailed trip to Ireland, you can check out my full  Ireland Itinerary.

For the first day of your Scotland and Ireland vacation, arrive in Dublin airport and adjust to the time change. Dublin is Ireland’s capital city, so you’re sure to visit places while you’re here. Keep yourself awake until a reasonable hour (between 8 pm and 11 pm) and wake up early the next morning.

Now that you’re hopefully feeling well-rested and not too jet-lagged, it’s time to explore the capital of the Republic of Ireland. Don’t miss these stops in Dublin:

  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral
  • Dublin Castle
  • Christ Church Cathedral
  • Trinity College Library
  • St. Stephens Green
  • Lunch at Avoca Wool Shop & Cafe
  • Little Museum of London
  • Take a   Bus Tour   of Dublin
  • Howth Cliffs
  • Phoenix Park

Trips to Ireland and Scotland

Take an entire day to explore the west of Ireland. If you’re self-driving it will take about 3.5 hours to get to the west coast known as the Wild Atlantic Way. If you’re feeling nervous about driving in Ireland there are several great day trips from Galway that will take you to the west for this 2-day trip.  This amazing tour   explores the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and Killarney National Park, with an overnight stay in Dingle.

Ireland trip

Don’t miss these stops on your trip to the West:

  • Killarney National Park (learn more about   Killarney   here.)
  • Muckross House & Traditional Farm
  • Muckross Abbey
  • Killarney Town
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Blarney Castle

County Wicklow mountains

Spend a day in the beautiful County Wicklow. Be sure not to miss these:

  • Powerscourt Estate: Dating back over 200 years, these are some of the most beautiful gardens in all of Ireland
  • Glendalough: Beautiful lakes surrounded by stunning mountains!
  • Silver Strand Beach: A beautiful and secluded beach
  • Wicklow Gaol: This old jail is a great place to learn some interesting and sad Irish history.
  • Wicklow Town: Adorable Irish town

travel app scotland

Spend two days in beautiful Northern Ireland! You can take the three-hour drive yourself or take  this great two-day tour   that will take you to all the best sites. Be sure not to miss these:

  • Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
  • Giant’s Causeway
  • Dark Hedges

In between your exploration, make sure you also visit the city center and get to experience local dishes and listen to traditional Irish music while you’re in town!

Now that you’ve enjoyed a full week in Ireland, it’s time to hop over the Irish Channel and visit the beautiful and rugged Scotland! Most flights will take you into Edinburgh where you can either rent a car or spend a few days in the city then do some tours in the highlands. If you want to experience a great overview of the country, you can do my full  Scotland Itinerary.

Edinburgh

I normally like to advise people to get out of the big cities and explore the countryside, but Edinburgh has so much to offer that I think it’s worth spending at least 2 days here. You can learn about what to do in Edinburgh in  my detailed guide here,   but be sure not to miss these top spots:

  • Edinburgh Castle
  • Holyrood Palace
  • The Royal Mile
  • St. Gile’s Cathedral
  • Scott Monument
  • Grass Market
  • Princes Street Gardens
  • Take a    Harry Potter Walking Tour
  • Visit the Elephant House Cafe where JK Rowling ate
  • Victoria Street
  • Hike Arthur’s Seat
  • Calton Hill
  • Cairngorms National Park

If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a castle, be sure to check out these awesome castle hotels in Scotland.

Scottish Highlands

Spend day 4 exploring the highlands of Scotland. Visit Inverness and try and find the Loch Ness Monster! You can drive here or take   this easy day tour from Edinburgh.   Be sure to read my   guide to the highlands   and don’t miss these sites:

  • Urquhart Castle
  • Fort William

Isle of Skye

You can’t visit Scotland without taking a trip to visit the breathtakingly beautiful Isle of Skye. It’s rugged beauty and history combined with its rugged island charm is sure to win your heart! Driving to the Isle of Skye can be a little scary if you don’t know what to expect. The roads are one lane so you must share the road with oncoming traffic. If you’re not comfortable driving in those conditions, it might be a good idea to take a tour to the Isle of Skye.

Rabbie’s does an amazing 3-day tour that comes with your own comedic  kilted tour guide to take you through the Isle of Skye while learning all about its interesting past and natural wonders. You can find the  tour here.

Be sure to read   my complete guide to the Isle of Skye   before going.

Whether you decide to drive to the Isle of Skye on your own or take a tour, don’t miss these sites:

  • The Quiraing
  • Old Man of Storr
  • Neist Point
  • Dunvegan Castle
  • Fairy Pools
  • Eilean Donan Castle
  • Museum of Island Life & Flora MacDonald’s Grave

On the last day of your Scotland and Ireland vacation, travel back to Edinburgh and either fly home from there or fly back to Dublin to fly home.

I hope this itinerary will help plan many trips to Ireland and Scotland. They are both such amazing destinations and I know you’ll love them! If you need help planning, please feel free to reach out  Facebook   or  Instagram , or send me an email me  [email protected]

Our debit card fees.

Depending on the way you use your card, there are different debit card fees that you may have to pay. With Travel Smart added on your account for £7 a week, we won’t charge these fees for your selected weeks (up to 6 weeks a year)  when you use your debit card for that account abroad.

These debit card fees are:

  • A foreign currency transaction fee (2.99%)
  • A foreign currency purchase fee (£0.50)
  • A foreign currency cash fee (£1.50)
  • A foreign cash fee (£1.50)

Prop Farm: Oddsmakers divided on action surrounding Rory McIlroy in Scotland

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

There’s an interesting convergence of storylines around Rory McIlroy heading into this year’s Genesis Scottish Open.

It isn't the first time that has been the case - far from it. Just a couple of months ago, leading up to the PGA Championship, the Northern Irishman was coming off two straight wins and was returning to the scene of where his last major title had been captured.

In this case, we have McIlroy returning to a tournament where he’s the defending champion. We have a major championship on deck and the fact remains that he hasn't won a major in 10 years – having let the U.S. Open slip through his hands at Pinehurst.

As is often the case in these situations, there are mixed reactions as to how bettors are treating McIlroy this week at the window.

"Not worth mentioning in terms of the handle. It's a lot less than we have seen in the past," said Tristan Davis from his post at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

I immediately remembered how bettors jumped ship on Scottie Scheffler after his disappointing performance at the U.S. Open. As soon as they did, Scheffler went out and won again the very next week at the Travelers Championship.

"Still a whole day of betting to go. It can change. The bigger bets often come in late on golf, so I would expect the bigger punters to bet up on him later (Wednesday)," added Davis.

Drew O'Dell, senior data analyst at BetMGM, points out, "(McIlroy) has our highest ticket count percentage at 11.6% and our second largest handle at 13.4%."

It’s a similar story for longtime oddsmaker Nick Bogdanovich, who noted that McIlroy “is getting some good action” at prices above +800. But veteran golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman is seeing it go the other way.

"Not much here in the outright market," said Sherman. "In fact, they're playing Xander Schauffele to beat (McIlroy) in a tournament matchup."

At The Borgata in New Jersey, Thomas Gable is seeing activity on McIlroy but nothing too serious. "He has the most tickets written on him in the outright winner market but not the most handle," said Gable. "At such a short price, he isn't a real concern in terms of liability. There isn't any sharp money on Rory and it's all recreational on him in matchups."

Speaking with Adam Kaufman during his sports betting show on WRKO Radio in Boston on Tuesday evening, I said personally that I didn't know what to do with McIlroy this week and that I completely stayed away. It's tough to try to figure out how he is going to react this week. He'll be under the microscope as the defending champion - winning in dramatic fashion last year, nonetheless - and also as someone who hadn't spoken publically since his frustration at Pinehurst until Wednesday’s press conference.

At the same time, McIlroy has shown that he typically plays really well the week before a major championship. I went deeper down the board and tried to find plays with which I had more confidence, like Tommy Fleetwood.

"We don't usually see the sharp plays in the outright market but we have one this week. It is Tommy Fleetwood," said Davis at Mandalay Bay. "He's come from +2200 down to +1800."

Sherman is seeing some of it too. "We have sharp play on Fleetwood to finish Top 20."

Both Sherman and Bogdanovich have seen respected money come in on the 2021 Open Championship winner, Collin Morikawa. "Betting YES on Morikawa to finish Top-10 has been popular," said Bogdanovich. Sherman added, "We took sharp play on Morikawa to win it outright this week at some of our locations outside of Nevada."

"Ludvig Åberg is leading the way in ticket count and money wagered but we haven't moved the number. Tom Kim and Matt Fitzpatrick have been popular too. We've gotten sharp play though on Byeong Hun An," Sherman continued.

Åberg has been popular everywhere, really. "Åberg, Thomas Detry and Nicolai Højgaard have been getting quite a bit of action," added Bogdanovich.

O'Dell at BetMGM noted, "Åberg is No. 2 in ticket count percentage at 8.7% and No. 1 in handle at 15.6%. He is our biggest liability followed by Viktor Hovland and Aaron Rai."

The young Swedish phenom, who has quickly ascended to No. 4 in the OWGR and will be competing in his first Open Championship next week, made Davis' list as well. "Fleetwood and Sahith Theegala have been our two best bet players this week. Next best bet are Åberg, Rai and Hovland."

Rai made my list of outright plays as well as a Top-20 Finish this week. He's been in the final group on Sunday the last two weeks on TOUR and now he is going back to a course he's won at in the past. It was 2020 when he beat Fleetwood here in a playoff to win the Genesis Scottish Open.

Bogdanovich made mention of Detry and I played him for a win and a top-20 finish as well. He has played in all five prior editions of this tournament at The Renaissance Club, never having finished worse than 43rd. He finished 10th in 2022 and lost in a playoff here in 2021. His current form has been very good with a runner-up at the Texas Children's Houston Open, a fourth-place finish at the PGA Championship, and a 14th last month at the U.S. Open.

We've seen big hitters win here in the last three years: Min Woo Lee in 2021, Schauffele in 2022, and McIlroy last year. With over half of the field having played previously or being a current member of the DP World Tour, there is quite the mixed bag of contenders this week and I am embracing the variety.

Speaking of big hitters, I took some big swings on a couple of Englishmen at triple-digit prices in Matt Wallace and Matthew Jordan. I believe there are a number of different directions this tournament can go this week with the variety in the field and the way the ball bounces sometimes in links golf.

Yes, the weather is almost always a factor on this side of the world, bringing more possible randomness into play too, but the forecast looks pretty tame in the North Berwick, Scotland, area this week. Light rain, clouds, some afternoon sunshine and very little wind is what we are seeing currently.

Sounds ideal for us farmers.

More than 3.4K guns intercepted at airport security checkpoints in 2024, TSA says

T he Transportation Security Administration said it has stopped more than 3,400 guns at airport security checkpoints so far this year, and most of the firearms were loaded.

The agency also said it screened more passengers this summer, including a record-breaking three million passengers this past Sunday.

A total of 3,269 firearms were intercepted at security checkpoints during the first half of 2024, which ended on June 30, the TSA said, adding that 94% of those weapons were loaded.

The number of firearms stopped during this period was similar to the total at this time last year – which was 3,251 – but the number of passengers this year has increased.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER SUSPECTED HAND GRENADES IN CARRY-ON PROMPT EVACUATION AT HAWAII AIRPORT

Officers screened nearly 7% more passengers during the first half of 2024 than during the same time span last year, the TSA said. During the second quarter of 2024, more than 236 million passengers were screened, outpacing the more than 221 million passengers screened in the second quarter of last year.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

So far in 2024, TSA officers have detected an average of 19 firearms per day.

In the first eight days of July, which are included in the third quarter of 2024, officers across the U.S. intercepted another 166 firearms, totaling 3,435 firearms stopped by officers as of Monday.

The agency said 7.5 firearms per one million passengers were found at security checkpoints during the second quarter of 2024, which is a slight dip from the same period last year when the rate of discovery was 7.9 firearms per one million passengers.

"During a period of record-breaking travel volumes, our officers are working hard to keep our transportation systems secure and the traveling public safe, and any time they detect a firearm, there is a real safety concern for frontline employees and travelers," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.

FIREARMS INTERCEPTED AT AIRPORT SECURITY CHECKPOINTS NATIONWIDE SURGED TO RECORD TOTAL IN 2023: TSA

"If you carry a firearm, you are required to place it unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case in your checked bag and declare it to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter," he continued. "Do not bring it to the checkpoint. It is costly and delays you and everyone else traveling in the same lane with you."

The TSA said passengers are allowed to travel with a firearm, but it must be secured in checked baggage, unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case. The passenger must also notify the airline when checking the bag at the airline ticket counter.

Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport and in the cabin of an airplane, regardless of whether a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in an area that allows constitutional carry.

The agency urged passengers traveling internationally to be aware of their destination's gun laws, as the region may prohibit traveling with firearms and could impose criminal penalties.

The TSA noted that it does not confiscate firearms. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint, either on their person or in their carry-on luggage, an officer will contact police to unload the weapon and take possession of it.

Police may also arrest or cite the passenger, and the TSA may fine passengers up to nearly $15,000 for bringing a gun to a security checkpoint.

Beryl tracker: See path and spaghetti models for post-tropical cyclone, hurricane remnants

travel app scotland

Beryl , now a post-tropical cyclone, is expected to continue to move northeastward Wednesday and bring severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding to parts of the Midwest, eastern Great Lakes and Northeast, according to the National Weather Service .

Heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected across portions of the southern Great Lakes into central and northern New York and New England through Wednesday night, according to the National Hurricane Center . A few tornadoes are also possible Wednesday, mainly over western and central New York.

According to the NWS, the flash flooding threat will be greater over parts of northeastern New York into northern Vermont and New Hampshire, while thunderstorms could be severe in some parts of the Lower Great Lakes.

Beryl unleashed a barrage of severe weather to southeast Texas on Monday, killing at least four people, flooding highways,  closing oil ports , canceling more than 1,300 flights, and knocking out power to more than 2.7 million homes and businesses.

According to the  National Hurricane Center , Beryl, the season's earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, weakened from a hurricane after pounding the coastal Texas town of Matagorda, a coastal community between Corpus Christi and Galveston. It had sustained winds of more than 80 mph as it made landfall at 4 a.m. CT.

Last week,  Beryl carved a path of destruction across the Caribbean  — leaving at least 11 people dead and destroying or severely damaging infrastructure on several islands. Beryl, which at one point strengthened into the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, last made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Friday morning.

Why are flights delayed at Sky Harbor again today? What travelers need to know

travel app scotland

Hurricane Beryl continued to disrupt flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday, July 9, a day after the storm wreaked havoc in Texas and killed at least eight people.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the flight tracking website FlightAware reported seven canceled flights and 85 delayed flights in Phoenix. Five of the seven canceled flights were out of Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Airlines issued travel advisories for Hurricane Beryl that allow affected travelers to change their trips without paying change fees or a fare difference, with refunds also available. Here's what travelers should know.

Live updates: Hurricane Beryl leaves millions without power as heat scorches Texas

How many flights did Hurricane Beryl cancel?

In addition to Tuesday's delays and cancellations, FlightAware reported 44 canceled and 302 delayed flights Monday , July 8 at Sky Harbor, most of which involved George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Thousands of flights were disrupted nationwide out of Houston's airports because of the storm on Monday.

Houston Airports, which manages Bush and Hobby airports, said operations were restored at 7 p.m. Central time July 8. It warned that flight delays and cancellations are still possible and that passengers should expect longer than usual TSA and ticketing lines and limited concessions and amenities.

What is the weather in Texas today?

Passengers flying to Houston may expect sunny skies with a high near 91 degrees, but a flash flood warning remains in effect after Hurricane Beryl. A heat advisory is in effect as the heat index nears 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

What if my American Airlines flight was canceled?

American Airlines , which operates most flights at Sky Harbor, is offering passengers who had travel booked at 16 Texas airports to change their flights without paying extra.

Travelers affected by Beryl can change their ticket to fly from now to July 16.

Fees are waived if the passenger bought their ticket by July 5, was scheduled to travel from July 7-9, don't change their origin or destination city, and can rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference for an upgrade. Changes must be made by July 9.

What if my Southwest Airlines was canceled?

Southwest Airlines, which operates the second-most flights at Sky Harbor, said passengers booked for flights from July 6-9 to or from Bush and Hobby airports in Houston, as well as Austin, Corpus Christi, Harlingen and San Antonio, can change their tickets at no additional charges.

Travelers must rebook their travel within 14 days of the original date between the original city pairs.

Passengers with tickets for a canceled flight or who choose not to travel because of a significant delay can request refunds for the unused portions of their tickets, or cancel the reservation and hold the value of the unused ticket as a Southwest flight credit.
