Huaraz is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise in Peru because it offers a multitude of hiking possibilities.

It is still little known by international travelers and the reason is very simple: it is off the beaten track for tourists who only have 2 weeks to visit Peru.

However, if you are a lover of trekking and nature, you cannot miss this little jewel of the Andes of northern Peru!

The perfect city as a starting point to discover all the wonders that the Callejón de Huaylas offers. Next, the best tourist places in Huaraz that you should know.

The City of Huaraz

Located at an altitude of 3080m in the Andes, Huaraz is the capital of the region of the same name, in the province of Ancash.

In fact, there is not much to do in the city and its main interest is to be the starting point for all excursions.

But since you will have to go through there, it is better to take advantage of it!

What to do in the city of Huaraz?

The Plaza de Armas: it is the central square of Huaraz, where the cathedral, the San Sebastián Tabernacle, the tourist office and the archeology museum are located.

The Ancash Archaeological Museum: presents the historical and cultural development of the Ancash region, from 10,500 B.C. until the sixteenth century. There are Chavin, Huaraz, Mochica, Recuay, and Inca artifacts. Its garden is a must-see with its 140 monoliths. From Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry 5 soles.

The Sanctuary of the Lord of Soledad is a beautiful church located in the Plaza de la Soledad

Visit the Central Market where you can see local life, products of all kinds, etc.

El Mirador Rataquenua: it is a viewpoint with a great view over Huaraz and the surrounding mountains. You can walk 1 hour from the center, or take a taxi (20 soles). Further on, there is also the Pukaventana viewpoint.

Try the Sierra Andina beer that is originally from Huaraz. It was one of the first craft beers in Peru! Now it is very famous and available all over the country, but the best place to discover it is in the Trivio bar.

At about 3100m above sea level, between the magnificent mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, and the Mosna and Huachesca rivers, lies Chavín de Huantar, an archaeological complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Huaraz and one of the essential places to see in Peru.

It was the administrative and religious center of the Chavín culture (1500-400 BC) and was the most important pilgrimage site in the Andean world. So important that even pilgrims from the Amazon came!

There are several buildings with a rather complex network of galleries and corridors. Chavín de Huantar is known for having the oldest carved stone buildings in Peru.

The most important structures are El Castillo (also called the New Temple or Mayor Temple) and the Old Temple.

There are also the North Structure, the Circular Plaza, the Tello Pyramid, the North Platform, the South Platform and the Quadrangular Plaza.

Of course you cannot miss the Chavín National Museum, which presents the evolution of the Chavín culture and where you can see the Tello obelisk, 19 pututus (wind instruments), 282 ceramic pieces and other artifacts.

How to visit Chavin de Huantar?

You can book a tour from Huaraz to Chavín de Huantar that includes the guided visit, the Chavín de Huantar museum and the pick-up at your hotel.

Querococha Lagoon

57 km from the capital, in the Callejón de Huaylas, is the great Querococha lagoon (3980 m).

It is the most touristic lagoon in the area due to its proximity to Huaraz and Chavín de Huantar, but it is really worth visiting because it offers magnificent views of the high mountains and glaciers that surround it.

How to visit the Querococha Lagoon?

Tours to the Querococha lagoon (full day) usually include a visit to Chavín de Huantar and pass through the small towns of Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac.

Honcopampa is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Callejón de Huaylas.

Its origin dates back to the VII- IX centuries and it was occupied by the Recuay and Wari peoples.

Today you can still see a group of square houses with a central patio and chullpas (mausoleums).

How to visit Honcopampa?

If you take a tour to Honcopampa from Huaraz, you will also be able to visit some artisan towns (Tarica, Pariahuanca, San Miguel de Aco, etc.), the Yuracyacu waterfalls and the Chancos thermal baths.

Acclimatization Treks

To get used to the altitude, it is very important that you take a day of acclimatization in Huaraz before making any physical effort, unless you come directly from Cusco or another high-altitude destination.

For your second day, it is best to do a short hike (1/2 day or 1 day). These walks have different levels of difficulty, some are easier than others.

The most famous in Huaraz are Laguna 69, Laguna Churup and Laguna Parón, but there are also other places to visit in Huaraz.

Here I present several acclimatization hikes, known and less known:

Laguna 69 located in the Huascarán National Park is an essential place to see in Huaraz.

You can access it by walking from Cebollapampa. The hike is not very long but it is quite physically demanding because you go from 3890m to 4600m, so take your time!

The ascent lasts about 3 hours and allows you to enjoy beautiful landscapes between waterfalls and mountains.

The first half of the hike is fairly easy, but the climb is steeper towards the end. Do not hesitate to take breaks along the way to avoid altitude sickness.

When you reach the top, you will only have 15 minutes (without climbing) to reach Laguna 69, at the foot of the Chacraraju mountain.

If you want you can get into the water but believe me it is very cold!

How to get to Laguna 69?

the easiest option is to go with a cheap excursion from Huaraz. Includes pick up at your hotel, breakfast, snacks, entrance to the Huascarán National Park, a stop at the Llanganuco lagoons and free time at Lagoon 69.

The Quebrada de Llanganuco is one of the best places to visit in Huaraz.

It is also located in the Huascarán National Park, and is formed by the Chinancocha and Orconcocha lagoons, fed by the Huascarán, Yanapacca, Pisco and Huandoy snow-capped mountains.

From the entrance of the park, following a dirt road for about 30 minutes, you will first arrive at the Chinancocha Lagoon. It is the largest and most touristy of the two lagoons, you can even take a boat or horseback ride.

The Orconcocha Lagoon is a few minutes from the first lagoon.

I recommend that you follow the “sendero de María Josefa” path, a nice 1h30 walk that allows you to explore the surroundings and see 80% of the region's plants (including many orchids!). It is well indicated, easy and really charming.

How to get to the Llanganuco lagoons?

With a tour it is really more comfortable! You have two tour options, you can take the tour that includes Llanganuco and Laguna 69, or the tour only to the Llanganuco lagoons, which includes pick-up at your hotel, entrance fee and guide.

Churup Lagoon

From the town of Pitec, it takes about 3 hours of walking, but in reality the challenge comes at the end of the trail with about 9 meters of rocks that you have to climb with a rope (already fixed on the wall).

At this height (4450m), one quickly runs out of breath, but behind this wall is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Cordillera Blanca with crystal clear water.

The acclimatization hike to Laguna Churup is more demanding than the previous ones (due to the altitude) and I recommend that you avoid starting with it.

How to get to the Churup Lagoon?

First you have to get to the town of Pitec by bus (40min), and then there is only one round trip.

Paron Lagoon

At 4300m high, in the Huascarán National Park, is one of the most beautiful places to see in Huaraz: Laguna Parón.

It is much less known and less touristy than Laguna 69, but it is just as beautiful (and in my opinion, even more so!).

You can walk around the lake and go to the foot of the Artesonraju glacier.

I recommend you go up to the viewpoint (45min-1h one way) to enjoy the spectacular view and take photos, you can also rent a kayak or a boat.

You reach the lake with a walk of 2h30 to 3h, on an unpaved road, but accessible to cars.

You can sleep near the lake, camping or in the shelter with kitchen (20 soles).

How to get to Laguna Parón?

An organized tour includes pick-up from your hotel, breakfast in Carhuaz, a panoramic stop in front of the Cordillera Blanca, a visit to Marcara and Caraz, known for its sweets, as well as the Parón Lagoon.

Wilcacocha Lagoon

The Wilcacocha Lagoon is located at an altitude of 3,700 m in the Cordillera Negra. It is a good acclimatization hike option in Huaraz and can be done very well without a guide.

The lagoon is not very big, but the road is very nice with small rural roads, villages and fields. After about 2h30 of walking at a leisurely pace, you arrive at the lake with incredible views over the mountains of the Cordillera Blanca.

How to get to Wilcacocha?

from Huaraz it is 15 minutes by bus (10 or E) to Chiwipampa, from the corner of Avenida Raymondi and Jirón Hualcán. 1-2 soles one way per person. Be careful with your return time because the last buses pass around 4:30 pm.

Radian Lagoon and Mullaca Lagoon

This is a hike off the beaten track in Huaraz that few tourists know about.

It is important to take into account that it is a fairly demanding walk of 25 km with 1200 m. unevenness, which will take you up to 4610 m.

Walking near the San Cristóbal hill for about 2 hours, you first arrive at the Radian Lagoon (3950m altitude), a very quiet place with a magnificent view over the valley.

From the north side of the Radian Lagoon, take the path that follows the pre-Inca channel (1h). In the second part, the path becomes more interesting, following the stream fed by the waters of the Mullaca Lagoon (1h).

So you have to calculate a 4-4h30 walk from the town of Recrish to Mullaca, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the region, in front of the snowy Vallunaraju.

How to get to the Radian and Mullaca lagoons?

You have to go to the town of Recrish (30 minutes from Huaraz), near the archaeological site of Willcahuain. You can take your bus here, 1.8 soles one way. It is a 2h walk to the Radian Lagoon and 2h30 to Mullaca.

Aguak Lagoon

It is a nice little touristy hike in Huaraz.

The walk begins 45 minutes from Huaraz, in the small town of Paria where the pre-Inca ruins of Willcahuain (or Huillcahuayín) are located.

Willcahuain was occupied by various peoples for very long periods (from before Christ to the 9th century!), but it is known mainly for being an administrative center of the Huari people.

Not much remains today, but you can see the "Temple" which is a mausoleum.

From there, it takes about 3 hours of walking along a path surrounded by eucalyptus trees, conifers and shrubs to reach Lake Aguak at 4950m above sea level.

From the lagoon you get a magnificent view of Huaraz and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca.

How to get to the Aguak Lagoon?

The excursion takes place in one day from Huaraz, and usually includes a box lunch and the entrance to the Huascarán National Park.

Pastoruri Glacier

The Pastoruri is a glacier located in the Huascarán National Park, which rises to 5200 m above sea level.

It is infamous for having lost some of its ice cover in recent years due to climate change.

It takes about 3 hours of travel to get there from Huaraz, but the landscapes are magnificent!

On the way you can admire the imposing mountains and the Puyas Raimondi, some typical plants of the puna (Altiplano region between 3,200 and 4,800 meters of altitude).

The walk to Pastoruri only lasts 45 min-1 hour with a slight slope, but the path is not difficult. It is especially the height that can weigh.

How to get to Pastoruri?

I recommend you hire an excursion to Pastoruri that includes the pick-up at your hotel in Huaraz, the entrance fees and the guide. You can also choose the private tour option.

Multi-Day Hikes

I repeat: it is very important to acclimatize to the altitude.

The ideal is to take a quiet day in Huaraz and then do 2 days of short walks, before starting these multi-day hikes.

Mountain sickness can cause severe nausea and headache, or worse in some cases.

If you feel very bad at any point of the walk, you must go back down, it is the only way to recover.

Santa Cruz (4 days)

The Santa Cruz trek is one of the best things to do in Huaraz and yet there are not many hikers on the trail. This is the advantage of being in a non-touristy destination in Peru!

It is a trip of 4 days and 3 nights through the Cordillera Blanca that allows you to admire a series of snow-capped mountains, small rivers and beautiful lakes.

People usually go with a guide, but you can also do it on your own because the path is well indicated.

The disadvantage is that you have to bring everything (material, food for 4 days, etc.), but if you want you can rent a mule, it's very practical!

How to get there on your own?

Take a bus to Caraz, then another bus to Cashapampa which is the starting point of the walk to Santa Cruz.

Huayhuash (8 to 12 days)

The Huayhuash trek is one of the most beautiful in the world, but also one of the most difficult in the region because it requires traveling about 130 km between 4,000 and 5,490 m altitude.

The landscape is impressive, with imposing mountains that exceed 6000 m.

Along the way, we can observe the famous Andean condor, vicuñas and vizcachas. Halfway along the way you can also enjoy the thermal waters that offer a well-deserved dose of relaxation to the body.

There are many variants of the Huayhuash trek that are shorter than the full version. There is even a 4-day “mini” Huayhuash.

It can be done with an agency or alone, although the safest way is to do it with a guide.

Do the Huayhuash trek on your own?

I recommend that you do it only if you have a good experience in high altitude and the adapted equipment. It is important to understand that this trip involves risks along the way and if something happens, you will be isolated.

How to get to the starting point?

From Huaraz, you can take a taxi to Cuartelwain. Another option is to take the bus to Llamac and then walk to Cuartelwain.

Quilacayhuanca – Cojup (3 days)

2 hours from Huaraz, in the Huascarán National Park, is Quilcayhuanca (3850m), the starting point of the trek.

The first day, the trek lasts 5 hours and ends at the Tulpacocha camp.

The second day is the longest, with about 10 hours of walking. You will pass through the Cuchillacocha lagoon or the Palcacocha lagoon, and you will cross the Huapi pass (5000 m) before arriving at the Cojup camp. The third day is a 3 hour descent. The itineraries according to the organisms can vary significantly.

It is a little touristy trail in Huaraz, with views over the high mountains, waterfalls and rivers.

Olleros-Chavín (3 days)

It is a 3-day trek that begins in the town of Olleros, follows a part of the famous Inca trail or Qhapaq Ñan, and ends at the archaeological site of Chavín. Therefore, it is an interesting mixture of landscape and culture.

And they are also llamas instead of donkeys carrying the luggage!

Other Walks and Activities

There are many things to see and do in Huaraz such as rafting on the Santa River, mountain biking in the Cañón del Pato, climbing in Hatun Machay, rappelling, zip-lining, etc.

You can also do many hikes that I have not mentioned in this article:
The hike in the Valley of Ischinca (3 days) in a shelter or a tent
The trek to Alpamayo (10 days)
The Cedro Trek (9 days) that allows you to cross the Cordillera Blanca
The Peak of Mateo (1 day) is short, but intense because you reach 5150m climbing

Entrance to the Huascarán National Park

The cost of entering the Huascarán National Park is 30 soles for 1 day, 60 soles for 2 or 3 days, or 150 soles for 4 to 30 days (per person).

Take into account that, in general, the entrance to the park is not included in the tours from Huaraz.

What is the weather like in Huaraz?

In the heights it can be hot during the day and very cold at night.

In the rainy season (from November to April) the temperature is around 11C. March is the rainiest month. But usually it only rains in the afternoon, and in the morning you can enjoy the sun.

In the dry season (May to October), which represents summer in the Andes, the temperature is around 15C. The rains are practically non-existent between June and September.

When to go to Huaraz?

The best time to visit Huaraz is from April to October to avoid the rainy season which is from November to mid-April.

How much time to visit Huaraz?

Most travelers stay in Huaraz for 3 days and 2 nights, taking the night bus from Lima.

If you don't have much time, I recommend 3 days in Huaraz, to take 1 day of acclimatization to the altitude and to be able to enjoy at least 2 full days of excursions.

It all depends on the hikes you want to do, since some are longer than others, but there are so many options that the ideal is to spend a week in Huaraz.

If you plan to do a multi-day hike, I recommend doing it only after the 3rd or 4th day to make sure your body is ready.

What to take to Huaraz?

Light clothing for the day and warm clothing for the night.
If you go in the rainy season (from November to April) do not forget to bring a raincoat.
You will easily find stores that rent all the equipment you will need.
Also bring water, sunscreen and good sunglasses as the sun is very strong at this altitude.

How to get to Huaraz?

By bus: buses leave Lima every day (ex: Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours and Ormeño) and the journey lasts 8 hours. If you don't want to waste a day on the bus, there are also night buses.

By plane: it is the fastest way to get to Huaraz since a flight from Lima only lasts one hour. Anta Airport is 15 minutes from Huaraz by car.

Situada a una altitud de 3080m en los Andes, Huaraz es la capital de la región del mismo nombre, en la provincia de Ancash .

De hecho, no hay mucho que hacer en la ciudad y su principal interés es ser el punto de partida de todas las excursiones.

Pero ya que tendrás que pasar por allí, ¡es mejor aprovecharlo!

Qué hacer en la ciudad de Huaraz:

La Plaza de Armas : es la plaza central de Huaraz, donde se encuentra la catedral, el Sagrario San Sebastián, la oficina de turismo y el museo de arqueología.
El Museo arqueológico de Ancash : presenta el desarrollo histórico y cultural de la región de Ancash, desde el 10.500 a.C. hasta el siglo XVI. Hay artefactos chavin, huaraz, mochica, recuay, incaicos. Su jardín es una visita obligada con sus 140 monolitos. De Martes a Domingo de 9 a 17 horas. Entrada 7 soles.
El Santuario del Señor de la Soledad es una hermosa iglesia ubicada en la Plaza de la Soledad.
Visitar el Mercado Central donde puedes ver la vida local, productos de todo tipo, etc.
El Mirador Rataquenua : es un mirador con una gran vista sobre Huaraz y las montañas circundantes. Puedes llegar caminando 1h desde el centro, o ir en taxi (20 soles). Más adelante, también está el mirador de Pukaventana .
Prueba la cerveza Sierra Andina que es originaria de Huaraz. Fue una de las primeras cervezas artesanales de Perú ! Ahora es muy famosa y disponible en todo el país, pero el mejor lugar para descubrirlo es en el bar Trivio .

A unos 3100m sobre el nivel del mar, entre las magníficas montañas de la Cordillera Blanca , y los ríos Mosna y Huachesca, se encuentra Chavín de Huantar , un complejo arqueológico declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

Es uno de las mayores atractivos turísticos de Huaraz y uno de los lugares imprescindibles que ver en Perú .

Fue el centro administrativo y religioso de la cultura Chavín (1500-400 a.C.) y fue el lugar de peregrinación más importante del mundo andino . ¡Tan importante que incluso iban peregrinos del Amazonia !

Hay varios edificios con una red de galerías y pasillos bastante compleja. Chavín de Huantar es conocido por tener los edificios de piedra tallada más antiguos del Perú .

Las estructuras más importantes son El Castillo (también llamado Templo Nuevo o Templo Mayor) y el Templo Viejo .

También están la Estructura Norte, la Plaza Circular, la Pirámide Tello, la Plataforma Norte, la Plataforma Sur y la Plaza Cuadrangular.

Por supuesto no te puedes perder el Museo Nacional Chavín que presenta la evolución de la cultura Chavín y dónde podrás ver el obelisco Tello , 19 pututus (instrumentos de viento), 282 piezas de cerámica y otros artefactos.

Cómo visitar Chavín de Huántar:

Por tu cuenta : puedes llegar en autobús desde Huaraz (ida 3 horas). La entrada a Chavín de Huantar cuesta 15 soles e incluye el Museo Chavín. Pueden tomar el bus cerca al parque PIB, por Olguita tours . Hay salidas a las 8am y a las 11am (no recuerdo si hay más temprano), el viaje toma 2:30-3:00h y cuesta 15 soles de ida y 15 de regreso.
Con un tour desde Huaraz : puedes reservar este tour a Chavín de Huantar que incluye la visita guiada, el museo Chavín de Huantar, una parada en la laguna Querococha y la recogida en tu hotel.

Es la laguna más turística de la zona por su proximidad a Huaraz y Chavín de Huantar , pero realmente vale la pena conocerla porque ofrece vistas magníficas por sus las altas montañas y glaciares que la rodean.

Cómo visitar la Laguna Querococha

Los tours a la laguna de Querococha (día completo) suelen incluir la visita a Chavín de Huantar y pasan por los pequeños pueblos de Recuay, Ticapampa y Catac. ¡Puedes reservar el Tour a Querococha aquí!
Si prefieres ir por tu cuenta , la laguna está a 1h de Huaraz. Te recomiendo ir por la mañana ya que suele llover en la tarde.

Honcopampa es uno de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes del Callejón de Huaylas .

Su origen se remonta a los siglos VII- IX y fue ocupado por los pueblos Recuay y Wari .

Hoy todavía se puede ver un conjunto de casitas cuadradas con un patio central y chullpas (mausoleos).

Si tomas un tour a Honcopampa desde Huaraz , podrás también podrás conocer algunos pueblos de artesanos ( Tarica, Pariahuanca , San Miguel de Aco, etc.), las cataratas de Yuracyacu y los baños termales de Chancos .

Caminatas de aclimatación

Para acostumbrarte a la altura , es muy importante que tomes un día de aclimatación en Huaraz antes de realizar cualquier esfuerzo físico, a menos que vengas directamente de Cusco o de otro destino en altura.

Para tu segundo día, lo mejor es hacer una caminata corta (1/2 día o 1 día). Estas caminatas presentan niveles de dificultad distintos, algunas son más fáciles que otras.

Las más famosas en Huaraz son la Laguna 69 , la Laguna Churup y la Laguna Parón , pero también hay otros lugares para visitar en Huaraz.

Aquí te presento varias caminatas de aclimatación, conocidas y menos conocidas:

La Laguna 69 ubicada en el Parque Nacional Huascarán es un lugar imprescindible que ver en Huaraz .

Puedes acceder a ella caminando desde Cebollapampa . La caminata no es muy larga pero es bastante exigente físicamente porque pasas de 3890m a 4600m, ¡así que tómate tu tiempo !

El ascenso dura unas 3 horas y te permite disfrutar de paisajes hermosos entre cascadas y montañas.

La primera mitad de la caminata es bastante fácil, pero la subida es más pronunciada hacia el final. No dudes en tomar pausas en el camino para evitar el mal de altura .

Cuando llegues a la cima, sólo te quedáran 15 minutos (sin subida) para llegar a la Laguna 69, al pie de la montaña Chacraraju .

¡Si quieres te puedes meter al agua pero créeme que está muy fría ! Inténtalo y me cuentas como te fue 😉

Caminar de regreso hasta Cebollapampa toma 2h-2h15.

Cómo llegar a la Laguna 69:

Por tu cuenta : es posible, pero no es ideal si tienes poco tiempo. Primero tienes que tomar un colectivo de Huaraz a Yungay (7 soles), luego otro transporte a Cebollapampa (15 soles).
Con un tour : la opción más fácil es ir con una excursión barata desde Huaraz . Incluye la recogida en tu hotel, el desayuno, snacks, la entrada en el Parque Nacional Huascarán , una parada en las lagunas de Llanganuco y tiempo libre en la Laguna 69 .

La Quebrada de Llanganuco es uno de los mejores lugares que visitar en Huaraz.

También se encuentra en el Parque Nacional Huascarán , y está formada por las lagunas Chinancocha y Orconcocha , alimentadas por los nevados Huascarán, Yanapacca, Pisco y Huandoy.

Desde la entrada del parque, siguiendo un camino de tierra durante unos 30 min, llegarás primero a la Laguna Chinancocha . Es la más grande y turística de las dos lagunas, incluso puedes dar un paseo en lancha o a caballo.

La Laguna Orconcocha está a unos minutos de la primera laguna.

Te recomiendo que sigas el « sendero de María Josefa» , un bonito recorrido de 1h30 que te permite explorar los alrededores y ver 80% de las plantas de la región (¡ incluyendo muchas orquídeas !). Está bien indicado, fácil y realmente encantador.

Cómo llegar a las lagunas de Llanganuco:

Por cuenta propia : las lagunas están a 2h30 de Huaraz. Es mejor ir por la mañana cuando el sol da un hermoso color al agua. Tienes que tomar una combi o un bus de Huaraz a Yungay, y luego un colectivo hasta la laguna.
Con un tour : ¡es realmente más comodo! Tienes dos opciones de tours, puedes tomar el tour que incluye Llanganuco y la Laguna 69 , o el tour sólo a las lagunas de Llanganuco , que incluye la recogida en tu hotel, la entrada y el guía.

Desde el poblado de Pitec , se necesitan unas 3 horas de caminata , pero en realidad el desafío llega al final del sendero con unos 9 metros de rocas que tienes que escalar con una cuerda (ya fijada en la pared).

A esta altura (4450m), uno se queda rápidamente sin aliento, pero de detrás de esta pared está uno de los más bonitos lagos de la Cordillera Blanca con una agua cristalina.

La caminata de aclimatación a la Laguna Churup es más exigente que las anteriores (debido a la altitud) y te recomiendo que evites comenzar con ella.

Cómo llegar a la Laguna Churup:

Primero tienes que llegar al poblado de Pitec en colectivo (40min), y luego sólo hay un camino de ida y vuelta. También puedes tomar este tour a Churup desde Huaraz.

A 4300m de altura, en el Parque Nacional Huascarán, se encuentra uno de los lugares más bonitos que ver en Huaraz : la Laguna Parón .

Es mucho menos conocida y turística que la Laguna 69 , pero es igual de bonita (y en mi opinión, ¡hasta más!).

Puedes caminar alrededor del lago e ir hasta los pies del glaciar Artesonraju .

Te recomiendo subir al mirador (45min-1h la ida) para disfrutar de la vista espectacular y tomar fotos, también puedes alquilar un kayak o un barco.

Se llega al lago con una caminata de 2h30 a 3h, en un camino sin pavimentar, pero accesible a los coches.

Puedes dormir cerca del lago, acampando (5 soles por día) o en el refugio con cocina (20 soles).

Existe la renta de botes desde 10 soles o de Kayaks por 25 soles.

Cómo llegar la Laguna Parón:

Por tu cuenta: primero debes ir a Caraz (7 soles, 1h en autobús desde Huaraz), y luego tomar un taxi desde el mercado de Caraz hasta el pueblo de Parón (el precio varia entre 5 y 10 soles). Si vas con una excursión te dejan en el mismo lago, pero si vas en taxi es probable que te deje en la entrada de la carretera.
Con un tour organizado : inluye la recogida desde tu hotel, el desayuno en Carhuaz, una parada panorámica frente a la Cordillera Blanca, la visita de Marcara y de Caraz conocido por sus dulces, además de la Laguna Parón.

La laguna Wilcacocha está ubicada a 3700 m de altura en la Cordillera Negra . Es una buena opción de caminata de aclimatación en Huaraz y se puede hacer muy bien sin guía .

La laguna no es muy grande, pero el camino es muy agradable con pequeños caminos rurales, pueblos y campos. Después de unas 2h30 de caminata a un ritmo tranquilo, llegas al lago con vistas increíbles sobre las montañas de la Cordillera Blanca .

Cómo llegar a Wilcacocha:

Por tu cuenta: desde Huaraz son 15 minutos en colectivo (10 o E) a Chiwipampa, desde la esquina Avenida Raymondi y Jirón Hualcán. 1-2 soles la ida por persona. Ten cuidado con tu horario para el regreso porque los últimos colectivos pasan alrededor de las 4:30 pm.

Esta es una caminata fuera de los caminos trillados en Huaraz que pocos turistas conocen.

Es importante tener en cuenta que se trata de una caminata bastante exigente de 25 Km con 1200 m. de desnivel, que te llevará hasta 4610 m.

Caminando cerca del cerro San Cristóbal durante unas 2 horas, se llega primero a la Laguna Radian (3950m de altitud), un lugar muy tranquilo con una vista magnífica sobre el valle.

Desde el lado norte de la laguna Radian , toma el sendero que sigue el canal preincaico (1h). En la segunda parte, el camino se vuelve más interesante, siguiendo el arroyo alimentado por las aguas de la Laguna Mullaca (1h).

Así que hay que calcular unas 4h-4h30 de caminata desde el pueblo de Recrish hasta Mullaca, una de las lagunas más bonitas de la región , frente al nevado Vallunaraju .

Cómo llegar a las lagunas Radian y Mullaca:

Hay que ir al pueblo de Recrish (a 30 minutos de Huaraz), cerca del sitio arqueológico de Willcahuain . Puedes tomar tu combi aquí , 2-3 soles la ida. Son 2h de caminata hasta la Laguna Radian y 2h30 a Mullaca.

Es una bonita caminata poco turística en Huaraz .

La caminata comienza a 45 minutos de Huaraz, en el pueblito de Paria donde se encuentran las ruinas preincaicas de Willcahuain (o Huillcahuayín).

Willcahuain fue ocupada por varios pueblos durante periodos muy largos (¡desde antes de Cristo hasta el siglo IX!), pero es conocida principalmente por ser un centro administrativo del pueblo Huari .

No queda mucho hoy en día, pero se puede ver el «Templo» que es un mausoleo.

Desde allí, se necesitan unas 3 horas de caminata por un sendero rodeado de eucaliptos, coníferas y arbustos para llegar al Lago Aguak a 4950m de altura.

Desde la laguna se obtiene una magnífica vista de Huaraz y de los picos nevados de la Cordillera Blanca.

Cómo llegar a la Laguna Aguak:

La excursión se realiza en un día desde Huaraz, y suele incluir un box lunch y la entrada al Parque Nacional Huascarán.

El Pastoruri es un glaciar ubicado en e l Parque Nacional Huascarán , que se eleva a 5200 m sobre el nivel del mar.

Es tristemente famoso por haber perdido parte de su cubierta de hielo en los últimos años debido al cambio climático, debido a ello últimamente se aconseja no caminar encima. Eso sí, las vistas son hermosas.

Se necesitan unas 3 horas de viaje para llegar allí desde Huaraz, ¡pero los paisajes son magníficos !

En el camino se pueden admirar las imponentes montañas y las Puyas Raimondi , unas plantas típicas de la puna (región del Altiplano entre 3 200 y 4 800 metros de altitud).

La caminata al Pastoruri sólo dura 45 min-1 hora con una pequeña pendiente, pero el camino no es difícil. Es especialmente la altitura lo que puede pesar.

Cómo llegar al Pastoruri:

Por tu cuenta : tendrás que alquilar un auto o algún tipo de movilidad. Ojo que en el camino se pierde la señal de internet. Si no quieres tomar un tour, como mínimo te recomiendo que contrates a un guía.

Las caminatas de varios días

Repito: es muy importante aclimatarse a la altura.

Lo ideal es tomarse un día tranquilo en Huaraz y luego hacer 2 días de caminatas cortas , antes de comenzar estas caminatas de varios días.

El mal de montaña puede causar fuertes náuseas y dolor de cabeza, o peor en algunos casos.

Si te sientes muy mal en algún punto de la caminata, debes volver a bajar, es la única manera de recuperarte.

La caminata de Santa Cruz es una de las mejores cosas que hacer en Huaraz y sin embargo no hay muchos excursionistas en el camino. ¡Esta es la ventaja de estar en un destino poco turístico de Perú !

Es un viaje de 4 días y 3 noches por la Cordillera Blanca que permite admirar una serie de montañas nevadas, pequeños ríos y hermosos lagos.

La gente suele ir con un guia, pero también es puedes hacerlo por tu cuenta porque el camino está bien indicado.

La desventaja es que tienes que traer todo (material, comida para 4 días, etc.), pero si quieres puedes alquilar una mula , ¡es muy práctico!

Cómo llegar por cuenta propia : toma un colectivo a Caraz, luego otro colectivo a Cashapampa que es el punto de partida de la caminata a Santa Cruz.

El trekking de Huayhuash es uno de los más bellos del mundo, pero también uno de los más difíciles de la región porque exige recorrer unos 130 km entre 4000 y 5490 m de altitud.

El paisaje es impresionante, con imponentes montañas que superan los 6000 m.

A lo largo del camino, podemos observar el famoso cóndor andino , vicuñas y vizcachas . A mitad del camino también se puede disfrutar de las aguas termales que ofrecen una muy merecida dosis de relajación al cuerpo.

Existen muchas variantes de la caminata de Huayhuash que son más cortas que la versión completa. Incluso hay un «mini» Huayhuash de 4 días.

Se puede hacer con una agencia o solo, aunque la forma más segura es hacerlo con un guía .

Hacer el Huayhuash por cuenta propia: te recomiendo que lo hagas sólo si tienes una buena experiencia en gran altitud y el equipo adaptado. Es importante entender que este viaje implica riesgos en el camino y si algo sucede, estarás aislado.
Cómo llegar al punto de partida : desde Huaraz, puedes ir en taxi a Cuartelwain. Otra opción es tomar el bus a Llamac y luego caminar hasta Cuartelwain.

A 2h de Huaraz, en el Parque Nacional Huascarán , se encuentra Quilcayhuanca (3850m), el punto donde se inicia el trek.

El primer día, la caminata dura 5 horas y termina en el campamento de Tulpacocha .

El segundo día es el más largo, con unas 10 horas de caminata. Pasarás por la laguna Cuchillacocha o la laguna Palcacocha , y cruzarás el paso Huapi (5000 m) antes de llegar al campamento Cojup . El tercer día es un descenso de 3 horas. Los itinerarios según los organismos pueden variar significativamente.

Es un sendero poco turístico en Huaraz , con vistas sobre las altas montañas, cascadas y ríos.

Es una caminata de 3 días que comienza en el pueblo de Olleros , sigue una parte del famoso camino inca o Qhapaq Ñan , y termina en el sitio arqueológico de Chavín . Por lo tanto, es una interesante mezcla de paisaje y cultura.

¡Y además son llamas en vez de burros que cargan el equipaje!

Hay muchísimas cosas que ver y hacer en Huaraz como rafting en el Río Santa , bicicleta de montaña en el Cañón del Pato , escalada en Hatun Machay , rappel, tirolesa, etc.

También puedes hacer muchas caminatas que no he mencionado en este artículo:

El trekk en el valle de Ischinca (3 días) en un refugio o una tienda de campaña.
El trekk a Alpamayo (10 días).
El trekk del Cedro (9 días) que permite cruzar la Cordillera Blanca.
Trekk del Nevado de Mateo (1 día) es corto, pero intenso porque se llega a 5150m escalando.

¡Depende de ti, dependiendo de cuánto tiempo tengas!

El costo de ingreso al Parque Nacional de Huascarán es de 30 soles por 1 día, 60 soles por 2 o 3 días, o 150 soles por 4 a 30 días (por persona).

Toma en cuenta que, por lo general, la entrada al parque no está incluida en los tours desde Huaraz.

Mal de altura : Huaraz es uno de los destinos más bonitos de Perú , con muchas posibilidades de excursiones. Pero, insisto, para disfrutarlo, tendrás que prever tiempo para aclimatarte .
Equipo : si no viajas con tu propio equipo, hay varias tiendas de alquiler (tienda de campaña, bolsa de dormir, etc.) en Huaraz.
Qué llevar : es importante que estés bien preparado, con ropa ligera para el día, y caliente para la noche porque puede hacer mucho frío. Si vas entre noviembre y marzo, también es muy importante traer un impermeable.
El precio de los tours : varia según cuantas personas se unan al tour. En temporada alta no es un problema, pero en temporada baja , puede ser que pagues un poco más caro porque hay menos viajeros o que tengas que contratar un tour privado .
Elige tu agencia con cuidado : hay mucha informalidad en el sector turístico poco control por eso te recomiendo siempre elegir una agencia recomendada (busca en TripAdvisor, por ejemplo) si quieres evitar problemas con los horarios, el equipo, etc. Nunca sacrifiques tu seguridad para ahorar uno soles.

Aquí te comparto mis recomendaciones de hoteles en Huaraz , para todos los presupuestos:

Kame Hous hostel: Acogedor albergue juveni l cuyo propietario conoce muy bien Huaraz, sus treks y atractivos. Acceso a la cocina totalmente equipada, chimenea, buen ambiente, vistas a los nevados desde el techo. Desde sólo 6 euros en dormitorio o 15 euros por habitación .
Hotel & Bungalows Villa Valencia : si buscas más tranquilidad y comodidad, este es un bonito hotel blanco con jardín, barbacoa, mesa de billar, bar. ¡Desde sólo 38 euros por noche!
The Lazy Dog Mountain Lodge : es un alojamiento encantador con estilo campestre donde puedes disfrutar de la chimenea, de la sauna finlandesa y de las vistas panorámicas sobre la Cordillera Blanca y la Cordillera Negra. El restaurante ofrece una cocina con ingredientes locales frescos, cultivados en su huerto. A partir de 107 euros por noche!

En las alturas puede hacer calor de día, y mucho frío de noche.

En temporada de lluvias (de noviembre a abril) la temperatura gira alrededor de 11C. Marzo es el mes más lluvioso. Pero generalmente sólo llueve por la tarde, y en la mañana puedes disfrutar del sol.

En temporada seca (mayo a octubre), que representa el verano en los Andes, la temperatura está alrededor de 15C. Las lluvias son prácticamente inexistentes entre junio y septiembre.

La mejor época para visitar Huaraz es de abril a octubre para evitar la temporada de lluvias que es de noviembre hasta mediados de abril.

La mayoría de los viajeros se quedan en Huaraz 3 días y 2 noches , tomando el autobús nocturno desde Lima .

Si no tienes mucho tiempo , te recomiendo 3 días en Huaraz, para tomar 1 día de aclimatación a la altitud y poder disfrutar al menos 2 días completos de excursiones.

Todo depende de las caminatas que quieras hacer, ya que algunas son más largas que otras, pero hay tantas opciones que lo ideal es pasar una semana en Huaraz .

Si planeas hacer una caminata de varios días, te recomiendo hacerlo sólo a partir del 3º o 4º día para asegurarte de que el cuerpo está listo.

Ropa ligera para el día y ropa abrigada para la noche.

Si vas en temporada de lluvia (de Noviembre a Abril) no te olvides de traer un impermeable.

Encontrarás fácilmente tiendas que alquilan todo el equipo que necesitarás.

También trae agua, protector solar y buenos lentes de sol ya que el sol es muy fuerte a esta altitud.

En autobús : los buses salen de Lima todos los días (ex: Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours, Civa) y el trayecto dura 8 horas. Si no quieres perder un día en el bus, también hay buses nocturnos.

Existen varias rutas para ir de Lima a Huaraz , pero te recomiendo la más corta y la más conocida (400km en 6h-6h30).

Desde Lima, toma la Panamericana Norte (1N) hasta el desvío de Pativilca , luego sigue hacia el este hasta Conococha (16), toma la carretera (3N) hasta Huaraz.

También puedes seguir hacia el norte por la Panamericana Norte (1N) hasta Casma y luego tomar la carretera (14) hasta Huaraz, ¡pero son unos buenos 100 km extras!

Tienes que saber que es una zona con muchas curvas (especialmente en el tramo Pativilca – Conococha), así que si no te sientes muy cómodo es mejor ir en bus.

Para llegar a Huaraz en coche y poder realizar diferentes excursiones, necesitarás un buen coche (tipo 4×4), adaptado al frío y a los caminos sin asfaltar.

Es primordial comparar las diferentes opciones para encontrar el mejor coche al mejor precio y así asegurarte de respetar tu presupuesto de viaje.

A Guide to Visiting Laguna Paron in Huaraz, Peru

If you’re planning on visiting Laguna Paron from Huaraz and want to learn more about what your day trip could look like, then you’ve found the right post.

Laguna Paron is one of the most popular day trips in Huaraz , so we’ll discuss whether you should do it independently or with a tour as well as cover the few things you can do at the lake. About Laguna Paron in Huaraz

Laguna Paron is located within the Huascaran National Park near Huaraz in Peru. The 340,000 hectare national park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The park comprises most of the Cordillera Blanca (“White Mountains”) mountain range. It also boasts Peru’s highest peak: Huascaran Sur (6,768 m / 22,205 ft). Cordillera Blanca is actually the world’s highest tropical mountain range which means that Huascaran Sur is the world’s highest tropical mountain.

Laguna Paron sits about 4,200 m (13,780 ft) above sea level. It is the largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca and is surrounded by several snow-capped mountain peaks. Probably the most recognisable peak is the 5,885 m (19,308 ft) tall Pirámide. The lake formed as a natural moraine reservoir. Compared to the deep blue hue of Laguna 69 , the colour of Laguna Paron is more turquoise thanks to the high concentrations of dissolved lime.

Good to Know Before Visiting Laguna Paron in Huaraz

Tour options to laguna paron.

There are actually two main tour options to visit Laguna Paron:

5AM start that includes a few hours of hiking either to Huandoy Viewpoint or to Artesonraju Mountain.
8AM start that includes a short hike to the Laguna Paron viewpoint.

Top Tip. It’s worth noting that in the low season the longer hiking tours might not get as much interest as the shorter one does. Therefore, if you really want to do the longer hikes it’s probably best to come in the busier season.

For reference, we opted for the later tour for a change of pace after getting up at the crack of dawn for almost every day or multi-day hike we’d done in Peru so far. It was actually nice to start our day a little bit later.

On the later tour you’ll also have the option to hire a small boat or kayak to take out on the lake which looked like a fun activity. Just bear in mind that you won’t have a long time to spend at the lake with the later tour. If you want to both hike to the viewpoint and go kayaking then you might feel a bit rushed.

Cost of a Tour and Entrance Fee to Laguna Paron in Huaraz

Tour costs can vary slightly depending on who you book with. We paid around S/.60 ($17 USD) per person for the later tour. The hiking tours will cost a bit more depending on whether any meals are included in the price or not. We recommend having a look around in Huaraz and booking it once you’re in the city.

During our time in Huaraz we noticed that it doesn’t really matter which tour company you book your later day trip with . Most companies actually work together and fit people from different companies into the same few vans to try to be more cost efficient.

There’s also an entrance fee of S/. 5 ($1.5 USD) per person that you’ll have to pay when you enter the park.

Note. Laguna Paron isn’t included in the Huascaran National Park Pass. This means that you’ll have to pay the S/. 5 entry regardless of if you have the multi-day pass or not. You’re basically contributing to the local communities with your visit. However, for many other day trips within the national park such as Laguna 69 or Pastoruri Glacier , you’ll have to pay an entrance fee of S/. 30 ($8.5 USD), or more if you want a multi-day entry ticket.

Independent Visit to Laguna Paron

If you don’t want to join a tour then you can also visit Laguna Paron on your own. Since the lake is located much further away from Huaraz, we recommend spending a night in Caraz . It’s a smaller and definitely less touristy town, but it’s quicker to get to Laguna Paron independently from there.

Based on our research, there should be an early morning colectivo leaving Caraz to a small village called Pueblo Paron. This is where the hiking trail to Laguna Paron starts. If you want to skip the hike, you’ll likely have to arrange a private taxi from Caraz, which could cost you more than the tour unless you share the cost.

Now, getting to the lake will be easier than getting back to Caraz if you want to hike. You’ll definitely have to ask the colectivo driver and the locals in Pueblo Paron when the next colectivo leaves to Caraz. If you miss it, or their not that reliable, then you might need to negotiate a ride back with one of the tour buses or hitchhike. Otherwise, you might end up hiking all the way back to Caraz.

Another option is to spend a night at the Tourist Information Centre on the shores of the lake. Apparently they have a few bunkbeds, so it’s a great option if you want to do some additional hikes around the lake.

Tour or Independent Visit Pros and Cons

There are pros and cons to either visiting with a tour or independently, so let’s run through them.

Pros of Taking a Tour:

Unlike in most places in Peru, joining a tour could work out the same price, or even cheaper, than trying to get there with a mix of public transport or taxis.
Taking a tour is also way more convenient. You’ll just need to hop in a minivan and then get off at the start of the trailhead. No need to worry about getting from A to B.
You’ll have about 8 hours in total to chat and bond with people in the minivan depending on the group.
If you pick the hiking tour, then you can spend more time in the outdoors and enjoy hiking around the lake.

Cons of Taking a Tour:

It won’t be your typical guided hiking tour as you may have experienced in other parts of the country. Most day tours in Huaraz will act more like transportation services. Although the guide will go up to the viewpoint with you, you’ll get given a time that you should be back at the minivan by and pretty much left to your own devices.
You’ll spend about 8 hours crammed into a minivan only to stretch your legs for about an hour on the later tour. The ride is also pretty bumpy so take motion sickness medication if you’re sensitive. Even if you’re not, you might be by the end!
Food is normally not included in the tour cost.

Pros of an Independent Hike

You’ll definitely have a more adventurous day by travelling on colectivos, local buses and taxis.
Staying a night in Caraz will give you the chance to stay somewhere less touristy. You can even stay at the tourist centre and enjoy a sunset and sunrise at the lake.
If you time your visit well, then you could have the whole viewpoint to yourself.
You won’t have a very long travel day from Huaraz if you’re staying in Caraz. Plus, you can hike at your own pace.

Cons of an Independent Hike

The cost of your own transport could very well add up to being more expensive than a tour. Especially if you end up having to take a private taxi.
Getting to the trailhead is always easier than getting back from such a remote area. We read that some people ended up getting a ride back in one of the tour minivans because there wasn’t any other options available.

Best Time to Visit Laguna Paron in Huaraz

You can technically visit Laguna Paron all year round. However, there are better and worse times of the year to visit.

The wet season is normally between December and March/April. Whilst visiting during this time frame doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be visiting in the pouring rain, the chances are much higher. The rocks along the short trail can become quite slippery in wet conditions so definitely wear appropriate shoes during this time. The jaw-dropping scenery and turquoise-coloured lake are why many people put up with being crammed in a minivan for 8 hours, so you really want to visit on a clear (and potentially sunny) day.

The dry season is from about April to November. This time frame definitely gives you a high chance of a sunny and enjoyable visit. If you come just before the dry season, around April, then you’ll probably have a pleasant and rain free day trip. It’s also less busy with tourists, so a good time to come to avoid the crowds. When we visited in early May we had a very beautiful day with an almost clear blue sky. However, the clouds were definitely building up by the afternoon and we had some heavy downpours and thunderstorms on our way back in the van.

June to September are the most popular tourist months, so be prepared for more people to be visiting with you.

What is the Altitude and Elevation of Laguna Paron in Huaraz

Laguna Paron sits at just under 4,200 m (13,780 ft) above sea level. If you opt for the later tour that doesn’t include much hiking, then you really won’t have much elevation gain to worry about on your day trip.

However, bear in mind that Huaraz’s elevation is 3,052 m (10,013 ft). This mean that you’ll gain over a 1,000 m (3,280 ft) during your car journey there.

This can be a bit of a shock to your body especially if you’ve not acclimatised properly. You should definitely visit lower altitude places such as Laguna Wilcacocha (3,725 m / 12,221 ft) first.

How to Prevent Altitude Sickness at Laguna Paron?

It is important to know that anyone can develop altitude sickness and its symptoms can be less or more severe depending on the person. Symptoms of altitude sickness include dehydration, dizziness, headaches, shortness of breath, heavy breathing, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

If you haven’t visited other high altitude places in Peru such as Cusco before arriving to Huaraz, we recommend taking it easy on your first day and not booking Laguna Paron straight away. Starting with an easier day trip such as Laguna Wilcacocha (3,725 m / 12,221 ft) is probably much better since it’s located at a lower elevation. This way you can acclimatise properly and avoid altitude sickness.

It’s also good to avoid drinking too much alcohol before your day trip and not eating too many heavy foods either. Staying hydrated during the day is also very important to avoid dehydration and headaches. You can drink Coca tea like the locals do at high altitudes in Peru. In addition, you can also buy some altitude sickness tablets before you hike anywhere in Peru.

Of course, if you’ve done some high altitude hikes in Peru already such as the Salkantay Trek , the Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain or you went on a 2 or 3-day Colca Canyon Trek , then you’ll most likely be fine booking a trip to Laguna Paron straight away.

What to Wear and Pack for Visiting Laguna Paron in Huaraz

If you’re doing the hiking version of this day trip, then it’s important to wear an appropriate hiking outfit.

Even if you’re only doing the short walk up to the viewpoint we recommend dressing for colder temperatures. Depending on the time of year you’re visiting, you’ll most likely need long trousers, a fleece, and even a hat and gloves on this hike. The temperatures will change a lot during the day so definitely wear layers. You’ll likely get warm as you climb up to the viewpoint but it can feel colder once you stop at the top if it’s not a nice, sunny day.

Make sure to also pack waterproofs like a rain jacket . When we visited in May we had a lovely day but we had a few thunderstorms and heavy downpours on the way back in the afternoon. Luckily, we were already in our transport vehicle, but you could easily get caught in an afternoon storm especially if you’re doing the longer hike. Especially for those doing the hike, make sure to pack a waterproof cover for your backpack too.

In terms of footwear, we suggest wearing hiking boots or shoes that have good grip and support. The trail up to the viewpoint is pretty rocky so supportive shoes will come in handy.

We recommend carrying a daypack with all the essentials in that you might need for the day. Pack your lunch to eat at the lake and enough snacks and water to stay hydrated. Don’t forget your camera gear either and perhaps bring a portable charger for your phone.

Make sure to use sun-cream, a hat or cap and sunglasses for protection. Also have enough cash on you to pay for anything extra such as toilets and snacks at the trailhead and tips for the guide and driver.

We suggest having a basic first-aid kit with you with some painkillers, altitude tablets, band-aids and any prescribed medications in.

Facilities at Laguna Paron

Toilet. You can use the toilet at Carhuaz ice cream shop if the tour stops there. There’s also a toilet available at the tourist centre building next to the lake for S/.1. Make sure to bring some change if you’d like to use these toilets.

Cafes / Restaurants. The later day tours normally stop briefly in Carhuaz so you can try some ice cream. Here you can quickly pick up some last minute snacks if you wish. The lake bar might have a few refreshments too. However, we do recommend bringing your own packed lunch that you can eat at the Laguna Paron viewpoint or along the shore.

Things to Do at Laguna Paron in Huaraz

There are a few things you can do at Laguna Paron, depending on how you choose to visit this beautiful location.

1. Hike Up to Laguna Paron Mirador (Viewpoint)

Most day trips will drive you up to the shore of Laguna Paron. From there you have the option to go on a short 30 minute hike up to the viewpoint. Luckily, the elevation gain is very minimal. However, you’ll be starting the short hike around 4,200 m (13,780 ft) which means that even a short uphill hike can feel much more tiring.

One thing to note is that the trail becomes quite rocky at the end so you’ll need to be careful when walking. It’s so easy to twist an ankle if you’re not concentrating, so perhaps wear supportive boots and keep an eye on the path.

The views you get from the mirador are absolutely stunning and taking the long and bumpy ride just for these views alone is totally worth it. Unfortunately, if you come with a tour, you won’t have an awfully long time to relax and take it all in. We definitely felt a bit rushed. But then again, if you come on your own you’ll have to worry about getting back to catch a colectivo.

2. Rent a Boat or a Kayak

If you enjoy water activities, then you can either rent a boat or a kayak and get a different perspective of Laguna Paron. Kayaks are around S/. 20 and boats are S/. 10 per person.

Note. The boat or kayak hire normally isn’t included in the tour price, so come prepared with extra cash.

Top Tip. If you’re fast enough, you can get up to the viewpoint, take in all the views and also make it back to the shore of the lake and rent a boat or a kayak. Just note that you won’t have a long time to do either activity, so if you want to take things a bit slower, then perhaps just pick one or the other.

3. Spend a Night at Laguna Paron

As mentioned before, if you visit independently you can actually spend a night at the Tourist Centre on the shores of Laguna Paron. They have a few bunk beds that you can pay around S/. 20 per night for which means you’ll have the lake pretty much all to yourself for the evening and morning.

Imagine seeing the sunset there and waking up in such a stunning location before all the tourists arrive. Just make sure to come prepared and bring enough cash and a sleeping bag. Plus, be willing to arrive by multiple colectivos with a high chance for an adventurous return journey to Huaraz.

4. Book a ‘Paron Loop’ Hiking Tour to Huandoy Viewpoint

If you enjoy hiking, then you can book a tour that takes you on a 2-3 hour long hike around the lake up to Huandoy Viewpoint.

This tour usually leaves at 5 AM from the city. However, you’ll be outdoors for longer unlike with the later tours where you only have about an hour or so at the lake.

This particular trail is about 5 km long and takes a good 2.5 hours to complete. You’ll have an elevation gain of 300 m with the highest elevation at the viewpoint being around 4,560 m.

Note that this tour will go to a higher viewpoint than the later day tour but would still initially walk up to the Laguna Paron Mirador.

We found that the Akilpo tour agency offers this Paron Loop day tour , but you can always ask around in Huaraz or check tour options with your hotel or hostel.

5. Book the Paron and Artesonraju Mountain Hiking Tour

Some tour operators also offer a longer hike around Laguna Paron which would also take you to Artesonraju Mountain.

This tour usually leaves at 5 AM from the city but involves a longer time spent outdoors than the later tours.

This particular trail is about 11.5 km long and initially follows the northern shore of the lake. This part is relatively flat and you can just enjoy the views of Laguna Paron. Once you’re at the eastern end of the lake, you’ll follow the trail to the north towards Artesonraju Mountain.

Did you know? Artesonraju is often referred to as the ‘Paramount’ mountain because its pyramidal shape is said to have inspired the Paramount logo.

Your final destination will be Artesoncocha Viewpoint located at an altitude of 4,350 m (14,270 ft). Therefore, you’ll only have about 150 m (500 ft) of elevation gain on this hike.

We found that the Akilpo tour agency offers this Paron and Artesonraju Mountain tour , but you can always ask around in Huaraz or check tour options with your hotel or hostel.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Laguna Paron in Huaraz

We were definitely blown away by the scale, colour and beauty of Laguna Paron. In our opinion, this lake is even prettier than Laguna 69 , which is one of the most popular places people visit in Huaraz.

The only downside of this visit is that the ratio between travel time and time spent at the site is very unbalanced and you’ll have to spend the majority of your day in a minivan. However, to witness such beautiful scenery we think it’s totally worth the long and bumpy ride.

Dare I say Peru’s natural beauty is my absolute favorite thing in South America?! I didn’t get to visit Huaraz while I was in the country for three months, but I would LOVE to go back and see this place. Huaraz es la capital del departamento de Áncash, y es considerada "la Suiza peruana", por estar situada alrededor de las montañas nevadas de la Cordillera Blanca. Su desarrollo se basa en la agricultura, el comercio y el turismo, pues en Huaraz se concentra la mayor actividad turística de la Sierra de Áncash.

Volar de Lima a Huaraz nunca fue tan rápido y barato.

Desde este lunes 1 de julio, las personas podrán viajar en avión desde Lima hasta Huaraz y sin complicaciones. La noticia fue anunciada por Manuel Van Oordt, CEO Perú de Latam , quien confirmó ello a Agencia Andina . Ante esto, se logró visualizar cuáles serían los precios que pagarían las personas por llegar con inmediatez al aeropuerto Comandante FAP Germán Arias Grazinani de Anta .

¿Cuánto costaría volar desde Lima a Huaraz?

Vuelo de ida:

Los precios van desde los 178, a 187 soles que serían S$ 46,69 a US$ 49,05.

Vuelo de vuelta:

Para retornar de Huaraz a Lima, las personas podrían pagar alrededor de 172 soles, que serían 45 dólares.

Pronunciamiento del gerente de Aeropuertos del Perú

La obra de aplicación del aeropuerto de Anta inició el pasado 23 de agosto del 2023, desde esa fecha se ha tenido la expectativa de que Huaraz sea un lugar con mayor turismo en el país y ante esto, Evans Avendaño, gerente de Aeropuertos del Perú, señaló lo siguiente:

“El primer año podría llegar a los 200.000 o 250.000 pasajeros. Pensamos que significara un potencial enorme a nivel de turismo para poder desarrollarse”, manifestó en un diálogo con RPP .
