The Ancient Egyptian Ka

Understanding conceptual ideas related to ancient Egypt thought can be difficult, and there is little more complex than the ideas surrounding the ka. Yet the ka was a most important concept in ancient Egyptian religion. Indeed, the name of Egypt itself is probably derived, though Greek, from the ancient name for the capital city, Memphis , which was Hut-ka-Pteh, or "House of the Ka of Ptah".

The word, ka, was expressed by a hieroglyph depicting two upraised arms, which was usually the symbol of an embrace, the protection of a man by his ka, or a sign of praise, although other interpretations are possible. The ka hieroglyph sometimes appears on offering tables in place of representations of actual offerings, and in its basic sense of life-power, the sign may appear in apposition with the ankh or some other sign.

Unfortunately, the concept of the ka has no exact analogues in European culture and so it is difficult to identify the ka with more familiar concepts. Hence, there are many interpretations that are frequently ambiguous and often unsatisfactory. One will frequently see the term translated as "soul" or "spirit", the ka was much more than that. During very ancient times, the ka may have indicated male potency, and in all periods it is used as a term for the creative and sustaining power of life.

Importantly, the ka needed continuing nourishment in order to survive and offerings of food and drink were made to it. Eventually, the offerings themselves began to be regarded as being imbued with the ka's life-power, and the plural kau was used to mean "food offerings"

This broad diversity in the meaning of the term ka is responsible for a wide variety of uses for the sign. A distinction must be made between the internal and external ka, as well as between the royal and the human ka, because these concepts could be very different.

The idea that there was something securing the physical and mental activities of man arose in Egypt and elsewhere during prehistory. The ka (or internal ka) was believed to be one of those entities. Many ancient Egyptian words, such as "think about" and "thought" have the same basic root as the word for ka, as do other words such as "magic" and "enchant"., reflecting the supernatural essence of the ka. There was also a reproductive role of the ka, but its connection to the thought process is not as clear. It is another part of what the ancient Egyptians considered to be a part of mankind's existence, the ba, which was usually related to the mind. Thus, in the literary work, "Dispute of a Man with his Ba", confusion of thought is described as a dialogue with the ba. Nevertheless, the word hmt, meaning to "think or "to act three together", lends support to the idea that the ka was also considered to be involved in the thought process.

The ka could be thought by the ancient Egyptians to designate individual human traits such as character, nature, temperament or disposition. And since one's character has so much to do with one's life, ka could also refer to destiny or providence. Yet, considering the ka as a kind of universal vital force is too abstract.

The idea of personifications were readily adopted in ancient Egypt. Hence, the Egyptian mind transformed this spiritual idea into a certain being, which we can refer to as the external ka. Apparently this form of the ka was primarily associated with the placenta, considered the twin of a man, and was born with him. Hence, scenes of the king's birth depict Khnum forming the royal baby and his ka on a potter's wheel. At the same time, to "go to one's ka" meant to die, even though the ka continued to live on after the body itself died, and was then supreme. In fact, priests who served in the funerary cult were called hemu-ka or "ka servants".

Within Old Kingdom pyramid temples, New Kingdom royal tombs and the temples dedicated to the gods, there are many representations of the ka accompanying the king, either as a personified ka sign or even in human form with the ka sign on its head. The ka hieroglyph holds the serekh with the Horus name of the king, while the ka itself holds an ostrich feather, the symbol of world order or ma'at, in one hand, and a long staff with a finial shaped like the king's head in the other hand. Hence, the royal ka is related to the Horus name describing the presence of that god in the king. This shows the dual nature of the king, which combines divine and mortal components. His divinity is realized through the ka. The relationship between the royal ka and Horus is apparent in its identification with Harsiese in the New Kingdom..

Unlike the royal ka, the human ka was never represented as a separate figure, because any representation itself is the ka. This explains the indifference of Egyptian artists to rendering individual features. They did not reproduce the portrait of an individual, but that of his ka, who was eternally youthful and in perfect shape.

During the Old Kingdom , the pictures created in private tombs created an entire world for the ka. They are an exact, although incomplete, copy of the earthly world. Only the people and objects essential for the owner are shown. Being a reproduction of everyday life, this "Doubleworld" is surprisingly realistic. There is nothing supernatural about it, including the gods. Every tomb formed its own doubleworld, and their total did not merge into an aggregate next world.

The idea of the ka was a dominating concept of the next life in the Old Kingdom . In a less pure form, it continued into the Middle Kingdom , and thereafter lost much of its importance, although the ka always remained the recipient of offerings.

1. What Does an Orientation Tour Mean?

u003cstrongu003eIn relation to coach holidays,u003c/strongu003e u003cstrongu003ean orientation tour is a tour led by someone who is not a qualified local guide. Its purpose is to give you general practical information to help you find your way around. The tour should not include detailed historical or cultural information as this should only be conveyed by a qualified local guide.u003c/strongu003e

On a coach holiday, an orientation tour is likely to be a tour led by the Tour Manager who is with the group and not by a local guide. As a Tour Manager taking groups, I am not legally allowed to guide tours of places that I am visiting with the group unless I am a qualified guide for that area. For example, I cannot lead a tour of London because I am not a Blue Badge guide. Becoming a qualified guide generally involves lots of hard work, study, exams, and of course expenses.

Once these trained guides are qualified the rates that they charge are generally set by the guide licensing agency and they can start earning back some of the money they spent training.

This applies to most cities and localities that coach trips visit on holiday. Each city and locality will likely have its own trained guides who are experts in that particular area, having spent a long time learning all the history and knowledge that any visitor might want to know.

This often applies to particular attractions and museums. A Tour Manager going to the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg for example is not allowed to take the group around the museum, the group has to go with a museum guide who are specialist in the museum and its treasures.

As such when you see that a tour is an orientation tour it means it will not be run by a local guide because this is the only type of tour a Tour Manager is allowed to do when visiting cities etc. These tours are supposed to be just about orientation, giving details of where things are rather than what things are.

They are supposed to be about things like how to get to attractions, how to get around, where shops such as pharmacies are, how to use the local transport and to help find things that you might want to visit, do or places to eat at.

They are not supposed to be full of historical information, cultural information, and detailed facts about the place you are visiting because that would make them a tour.

Of course, this is a bit of a grey area.

I have certainly done orientation tours and included some aspects of history and culture because learning that sort of information is what I love doing before a tour. However, I haven’t given a blow-by-blow historical account of the city, town, or area and I haven’t spoken in length about the history of any particular building or monument.

Likewise, I have also done orientation tours which have been focussed on where things are. Showing the nearest cashpoint machines, pharmacies, supermarket, bus stop, train station and all that more practical type of information.

As you can see understanding coach trip terminology in relation to tours is really important as they can be very different.

2. What an Orientation Tour Actually Is?

My point really is that if you see “orientation tour” in the description of what is included in your coach holiday, don’t expect a full-blown tour with a local guide. You are not going to get that.

You should expect an orientation tour focussing on what is nearby and how to get around – anything more than that is a bonus.

Over the years I have seen companies move away from using local guides with some companies now expecting the Tour Managers to do all the guiding for all the excursions and all the commentary on the coach as well for the duration of the coach trip. Given the coach trip can be a couple of weeks that’s quite a long time!

It seems clear that they have been doing this as a matter of cost saving. Logistically it can also be quite challenging to sort out local guides, confirm all their details, and sort out with them where the tour needs to go and what you need to see. Each local guide has a different way of doing things which can also be challenging for a Tour Manager to deal with.

No tour is generally the same when you use a local guide in the same way that each Tour Manager is different. I have worked with my fair share of local guides who weren’t great and I have even sent some of them home.

That said a local guide is generally a local expert, able to give much more in-depth information about a place, museum, or area. Often they will have personal experiences and stories to add to their tour which I think always helps.

A good local guide can help you see a place in a new way and having done tours to the same places with different guides I have really noticed all these differences and learned a great deal accordingly.

From a tour point of view, it can be quite monotonous if the only voice you are hearing is that of the Tour Manager. If they are doing all the guiding, all the coach commentary, and all the practical information about the coach holiday as well that is certainly a lot of talking.

A local guide can add a change of voice, a change of tempo, and a change of focus and interest.

If you see several “orientation tours” on your coach trip brochure it might be worth asking a bit more about this.

In fact it might be worth asking more about who will be doing the guiding for your coach trip whatever the wording on the brochure says.

Doing a bit of research into coach trip terminology can help ensure you fully understand the differences between holidays and help find the right tour for you.

• As with many other things, a bit of research pays dividends when it comes to coach holidays.
• It’s always worth double-checking the meaning of the coach trip terminology you see in your itinerary. This can help avoid disappointment and avoid confusion on your holiday.
• As with many things if in doubt don’t assume – making the wrong assumption about what coach trip terminology means, whether an orientation tour or something else can lead to disappointment on your holiday.

Ellen DeGeneres said during a recent stop on her “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up” tour that she is done with fame once she plays her final shows, which will be filmed for a new Netflix special (via People and SFGate ). During the audience Q&A part of the show at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, one fan asked if DeGeneres would return to movies after the tour ended or perhaps try her hand at Broadway.

DeGeneres kicked off the “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up” tour earlier this year and recently canceled four dates on the lineup. She’s been using the shows to address the misconduct accusations that hit as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” was coming to an end after a nearly 20-year run.

The talk show ended amid a series of reports detailing allegations of racism, sexual misconduct and intimidation behind the scenes. Variety  also reported  on crew members’ frustrations with how the production handled compensation during the COVID pandemic. DeGeneres gave an on-air apology and three producers  were fired  after WarnerMedia conducted an internal investigation.

“Let me catch you up on what’s been going on with me since you last saw me,” DeGeneres said at the Santa Rosa show before joking: “I got chickens. Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean.”

The comedian went on to admit that she “can be demanding and impatient and tough. I am a strong woman.” DeGeneres added, “I am many things, but I am not mean.”

“I used to say, ‘I don’t care what people say about me.’ Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity,” DeGeneres said about the public blowback from the allegations.

During a previous stop on the tour at the Largo at the Coronet Theater in West Hollywood, DeGeneres responded to a fan question by saying it was “so hurtful” how her show came to an end.

Degeneres’ “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up” tour continues through Aug. 17.

U.S. businesses added more stock to their inventory in May than most economists had been expecting.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday business inventories were up 0.5% month-over-month in May. They were also up 0.3% in April.

In the short-term, the May increase is good news — it means that despite higher interest rates, businesses feel confident enough about this economy to invest more in the stuff they sell — or the stuff that goes into whatever they sell. However, in the long term, things are a little more complicated.

An increase in inventory can be a good thing. But Christina DePasquale, who teaches economics at Johns Hopkins University, said sometimes the increase is unplanned, meaning businesses didn’t sell everything they wanted to sell, and their inventory grew unintentionally.

“That does mean that investment is increasing, which we will immediately see impact GDP in a positive way,” DePasquale said. “Oftentimes, that can be a signal of perhaps waning consumer demand, which then would be a negative impact on the economy down the road.”

But there are a bunch of other variables in this equation, said senior economist Meagan Schoenberger with KPMG.

“There’s also the fact that new tariffs went into effect in May,” Schoenberger said. “And so, there was a lot of stocking up of those affected products.”

Namely, products from China. She said auto dealers have also been adding inventory because they’re still playing catch-up after the pandemic supply chain debacle.

And if you’re already seeing Halloween decorations on the shelves, blame the weather.

“They’re expecting a record-breaking storm season, and that there’s going to be a lot more logistical problems,” Schoenberger said.

Businesses stocked up before the weather gets bad. So yes, an increase in inventory can spell bad news, but “I don’t necessarily know if there’s any red light flashing,” said John Quinterno, a public policy professor at Duke University.

Quinterno said business inventories have been depressed since the pandemic, but now, they’re “getting a little closer to where it was sort of pre-COVID, and it’s sort of in a range that I don’t think it’s unusual.”

Quinterno added broader concern about lasting economic implications of rising inventories is only warranted if the trend continues.

Kate Middleton made her second public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis at the 2024 Wimbledon men’s finals on Sunday, looking gorgeous and glowing in a vibrant violet Safiyaa dress .

And while elegant in its own right, the draped lilac design was also a symbolic choice for this particular outing.

The Princess of Wales, 42, serves as royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), and chose to honor the organization by wearing one of its official colors.

The AELTC’s hues are “Wimbledon purple” and a shade of dark green called “Wimbledon green,” making her lilac dress a perfect choice for the match.

The special bow tie pin she wore also features the club’s colors — and while her Safiyaa dress is still available to shop, those hoping to purchase her brooch might be in for a disappointment.

Only members of the AELTC can rock the ribbon, and with only 375 members and a mile-long waitlist, your chances of snagging your own green-and-purple bow are slim.

The mom of three completed her outfit with nude Camilla Elphick slingbacks ($395), By Pariah hoop earrings ($650), Victoria Beckham sunglasses ( $295 $207) and a pair of Halcyon Days bangles ($215).

Notably, one of the bracelets was studded with stones in a purple-blue “forget-me-not” color — perhaps a tribute to Princess Diana’s favorite flower .

While this marks the first time the princess has worn purple to Wimbledon , we have a feeling it won’t be her last.

Tadej Pogačar has once again demonstrated his climbing prowess, taking out the gruelling 15th stage of the Tour de France.

The Professional Cyclists' Association says it will take legal action against a spectator who threw potato chips at Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard on Saturday.

What's next?

The Tour de France has a rest day on Monday, before the riders tackle the final week of the race, with Pogačar holding a lead over Vingegaard.

Tadej Pogačar has demonstrated his climbing dominance once again, winning the gruelling 15th stage of the Tour de France on Bastille Day with a scorching ascent to the Plateau de Beille to keep the yellow jersey. 

The marathon stage on France's national day was nearly 200 kilometres long and featured four big climbs before an even harder grind up to Plateau de Beille.

Pogačar attacked with 5 kilometres remaining during the final "hors catégorie" (beyond category) climb, solidifying his reputation as the master of the mountains.

"I'm super happy with my shape right now," Pogačar said. 

"I usually struggle with the heat but today the team did a really good job with cooling me down. It was an incredible day."

It was Pogačar's third stage win in this year's Tour and his seventh career stage win in the Pyrenees mountains.

"Somehow I like them [the Pyrenees] and they like me back," Pogačar said. 

"Let's keep it that way."

The stage began with an immediate climb up the Col de Peyresourde, fracturing the peloton. 

A breakaway group of climbers, including Richard Carapaz, Laurens De Plus, and Enric Mas, set a fierce early pace but were reeled in as the decisive moments approached.

Temperatures soared close to 35 degrees Celsius on the final climb. 

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, aided by his Visma teammate Matteo Jorgenson, tried to respond but couldn't match Pogačar's relentless pace, finishing more than a minute behind. 

Vingegaard is now 3 minutes, 9 seconds behind Pogacar overall.

Third-place Remco Evenepoel, another top contender, also struggled to keep up and is in third place overall, trailing Pogačar by 5:19.

"Tadej is on another planet this year," Evenepoel said after the race. 

"Right now he is the best in the world. There is absolutely no doubt about that."

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay, who has won three stages, retained the best sprinter's green jersey.

Monday will be the second rest day in the three-week race, ahead of a flat stage 16 between Gruissan and Nimes in the south of France.

Legal action taken 'with pleasure'

Meanwhile, the Professional Cyclists' Association (CPA) said it would take legal action against a spectator who threw potato chips at Pogačar and Vingegaard during Saturday's stage 14.

Charging solo up the last stretch of Pla d'Adet, Pogačar had to dodge a fan who leapt out to hurl a bag of chips at the Slovenian race leader.

The spectator did the same thing to Denmark's Vingegaard, who came through moments later.

"The CPA will take legal action against this guy with pleasure due to what he did to both Pogačar and Vingegaard," CPA President Adam Hansen wrote in a post on X.

"This is disrespectful and will not be tolerated."

Vingegaard described some of the antics from the crowd as "strange".

"There was quite a bit of booing and someone was throwing chips, I heard also they threw the chips at Tadej and that's strange to do," Vingegaard said after stage 14.

"Just stay off the road. I don't understand why you go to a bike race and boo at people."
