Race preview
The herculean GC battle Tour de France between leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and second-placed Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) ended on stage 16 and 17 with the Dane first delivering a stunning blow in the time trial before a knockout punch on the Col de la Loze.
Vingegaard has a comfortable lead in the Tour de France GC standings of 7:29 on Pogačar, winner of stage 20 , and 10:56 on the Slovenian's teammate Adam Yates.
The penultimate stage delivered the final skirmish for riders fighting to move up in the top 10 of the general classification. Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) moved up to fourth overall while Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) lost one spot and is now in fifth place. Meanwhile, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) sealed the KOM classification.
All eyes now turn to the sprinters whose biggest day of the year is the finish on the Champs Elysées in Paris.

How to watch the Tour de France 2021: TV channel, live stream, schedule, ITV coverage and when highlights are
Geraint thomas is chasing the yellow jersey and mark cavendish the green – but the britons face stiff competition.
A thrilling Tour de France finished in late September after it was pushed back due to the pandemic, and some nine months later the same two faces are expected to be out in front when the 2021 edition gets under way.
This year’s Tour starts on Saturday 26 June, with defending champion Tadej Pogacar out to defend his crown and Primoz Roglic hoping to beat his fellow Slovenian.
Roglic held the yellow jersey for 11 stages last year but a stunning mountain time-trial performance from Pogacar in Stage 20 helped the then 21-year-old become the youngest general classification winner for over a century – a display which saw him claim the young rider and mountains classifications to boot.
This year’s battle for the yellow jersey has been dubbed part two of “Pog vs Rog” in some quarters, but Geraint Thomas is among the ever-strong Ineos Grenadiers contingent chasing glory once more.
Tour de France jerseys explained: Meaning behind the maillots – from Yellow and Green to Polka Dot and White
Here we take a look at the leading contenders, and below there is analysis of the fight for the green jersey as Mark Cavendish makes his Tour comeback .
You can also scroll down to see the full schedule and start times at the bottom.
Tadej Pogacar – UAE Team Emirates
- Age: 22 | Best result: 2020 winner
Pogacar comes into the Tour in good form having won the Tour of Slovenia earlier in June. The 22-year-old also won the one-day Liège-Bastogne-Liège and headed an impressive field at the Tirreno–Adriatico to justify his tag as favourite for the Tour de France.
The spotlight will be a little brighter as the defending champion, but the Slovenian has a strong team behind him, among them Rafal Majka – a two-time King of the Mountains – and new addition Marc Hirschi, who impressed last year.
“My year so far has gone really well and I’m really looking forward to starting this Tour with good preparation and good condition,” Pogacar said. “I am confident in myself and my team, we can’t wait for the challenge.”
How to watch 2021 Tour de France in UK Dates: 26 June to 18 July TV channels: ITV 4 and Eurosport 1 Live stream: ITV Hub , Eurosport website and GCN+ (ad-free with subscription) Start times: Scroll to bottom for full schedule Highlights: Shown daily on ITV 4 (7pm), Eurosport 1 and GCN+ app (times vary)
Primoz Roglic –Team Jumbo-Visma
- Age: 31 | Best result: Second in 2020
Roglic must ride away the pain of last year’s agonising near-miss when taking to French tarmac once more this year. He was able to win last year’s edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège after the Tour finished, while this year he will be buoyed by his Tour of the Basque Country win – a six-stage race in which Pogacar came third.
Tour de France 2021 route map: Where today’s stage starts and ends, plus full race dates and TV schedule
Having focused on altitude training over races this year, Roglic is a man on a mission, and has riders including Steven Kruijswijk, Sepp Kuss, Wout van Aert and Tony Martin out to support his cause at Jumbo-Visma.
Geraint Thomas – Ineos Grenadiers
- Age: 35 | Best result: 2018 winner
Thomas was a surprise omission from Ineos’ roster for the 2020 Tour de France, but he returns as part of a strong pack this time around, with team-mates Richie Porte and Richard Carapaz (below) also deemed contenders if Pogacar and Roglic fall short.
For Thomas, it will be about ensuring this team can work together before a prime general classification candidate becomes clearer, and that means any mistakes could lead to him backing up Porte or Carapaz – or even last year’s British winner of the Giro d’Italia, Tao Geoghegan Hart – in the latter stages.
Giro d’Italia 2021 results: Final standings as Egan Bernal wins grand tour for Ineos-Grenadiers
Porte won the Criterium du Dauphine earlier this month, while Thomas came third after winning the Tour de Romandie in May – his first title since winning the 2018 Tour de France. A good omen, but the Briton will know the Slovenians could take some beating.
Richard Carapaz – Ineos Grenadiers
- Age: 28 | Best result: 13 th in 2020
The 2019 Giro d’Italia champion saw his odds shorten after winning the Tour de Suisse recently which, along with the Criterium du Dauphine, is deemed as a good metric for which riders are heading to France in form.
The Ecuadorian will therefore be hoping a strong showing in the early mountain stages (eight and nine) will make him Ineos’ leader heading into the business-end of the Tour, but with a time trial on Stage 20 once more Carapaz will likely need a sizeable lead to hold off Pogacar and Roglic.
2021 Tour de France general classification (yellow jersey) odds Best at time of writing on 23 June: Tadej Pogacar – 13-8 Primoz Roglic – 15-8 Geraint Thomas – 9-2 Richard Carapaz – 8-1 Richie Porte – 22-1 Julian Alaphilippe 28-1
What about Chris Froome?
Chris Froome will be racing at this year’s Tour de France but the Briton will not be targeting a fifth title.
The 36-year-old is gearing up for his first Tour with Israel Start-Up Nation after leaving Ineos, but he will not be leading his team this year – instead supporting Canadian Michael Woods.
Froome finished a lowly 47 th at the Criterium du Dauphine and is still looking to get back to full fitness following last year’s horrific crash. A likely leader next year, this Tour will be about building his confidence and relationships with his team-mates.
Chris Froome admits he can’t win Tour de France 2021 – and some doubt he will even take part
Will Cavendish win the green jersey?
Back on the Tour for the first time since 2018, 36-year-old Mark Cavendish is aiming to add to his 30 career Tour stage wins. He is just four shy of all-time record-holder Eddy Merckx, and was included in Deceuninck-Quick-Step’s team with fellow sprinter Sam Bennett injured and therefore unable to defend his green jersey.
“I am delighted to be going back to the Tour de France with Deceuninck-Quick-Step,” Cavendish said. “Obviously, the circumstances with Sam could be better – he had a special Tour last year and I am sad for him not being able to defend his green jersey.
“But at the same time, I am excited to be going back to a race that I have such an affinity with and where I have so much history. It is the biggest bike race in the world, and I am going to do all I can to grab this opportunity with both hands.”
Mark Cavendish stage wins: How latest Tour de France victory brings Manx Missile closer to Eddy Merckx record
Cavendish last won the points classification in 2011, with Slovakia’s Peter Sagan going on to dominate, claiming seven of the last nine green jerseys.
Already the record-holder, Sagan (Bora–Hansgrohe) is joint-favourite to make it eight this year, but you can expect to see Lotto–Soudal’s Caleb Ewan claiming stage wins too, making the green jersey battle as intriguing as the one for yellow.
No. Words. Can. Describe. How. I. Feel. I will do absolutely everything to honour #thewolfpack boys, the @deceuninck_qst jersey and the greatest race on the planet @LeTour . Big boots to fill for @Sammmy_Be . Can everybody join me in sending him positive vibes please 🙏🙏 — Mark Cavendish (@MarkCavendish) June 21, 2021
Cavendish will hope to be there or there abouts, and after winning four stages of the Tour of Turkey in April and the last stage of the Belgium Tour in June, it will be great to see him back on a Tour that he adores.
Points classification (green jersey) odds Peter Sagan – 9-4 Caleb Ewan – 9-4 Arnaud Demare – 11-4 Wout van Aert – 7-1 Sonny Colbrelli – 15-2 Mark Cavendish – 12-1

The 2020 Tour de France is here – find out how you can live stream the delayed edition of the race.
This season has been hugely uncertain for both cycling fans and riders, but the biggest event on the calendar is scheduled to kick off in Nice on Saturday (August 29).
After the UCI suspended all racing back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tour de France was delayed from its usual slot in July and was reorganised for later in the summer.
This year’s race will now run from late August and finish in Paris on September 20, following the same course that was originally planned.
Riders will face a tough edition of the race, with eight mountain finishes and an uphill time trial to decide the winner of the 2020 yellow jersey.
Check out the full route here.
There have already been some surprises ahead of the race, as both Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome have been left out of the Team Ineos squad, as the British outfit backs Egan Bernal to defend his 2019 title.

But Bernal will face a tough challenge from Jumbo-Visma, as Primož Roglič has been in outstanding form in 2020 and will have support from a strong team including Tom Dumoulin.
Here is the full start-list for the 2020 Tour de France.
So far the first week of racing has been full of drama, with Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) taking the opening sprint stage and the first yellow jersey of his career. Kristoff also donned some striking €5,000 sunglasses on the podium.
Stage two was won by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) in classic fashion, forcing a breakaway on the final climb and taking back the yellow jersey he came so close to winning last year.
The third stage, another sprint day, was scooped by Lotto-Soudal's Caleb Ewan who put in a remarkable ride to weave his way to first place ahead of Quick-Step's Sam Bennett.
Stage four marked the first mountain stage of the race at Orcières-Merlette, with Primož Roglič proving himself strongest on the day with a sprint win at the summit.
But there were no major splits in the general classification and the race remains poised heading into the remainder of the first week.

Today's procession race event, stage 21, sets off from Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines for a relatively short 115 km journey to Paris and the famous Champs-Élysées finish line. With the shorter nature of the route, expect a much later start than any other stage of this year's tour as riders will set off at 4:30 p.m. local time and arrive in Paris three hours later. Jonas Vingegaard will be leading the way, unchallenged in the yellow jersey after finishing yesterday's stage, and the competitive part of the Tour de France, with an overall lead of nearly seven and a half minutes.

How to watch Tour de France in the USA
The best option for US viewers is Peacock, which has shown every live stage of the Tour de France. NBC and USA Network will have coverage on some days, with replays of some events showing much later. The cable TV coverage seems to bit a little hit-and-miss, especially after the first week, so we'd stick with Peacock .
It's not free, but as streaming services go, $4.99 is a reasonable amount per month, and you can always drop it before the month's end, as the Tour concludes in Paris on July 23. Check out the other options on this page if you want a free live stream, including English commentary versions from the UK or Australia.
Peacock is a streaming service featuring NBCUniversal TV shows, movies, original series, live sports, and news programs. Prices start at just $5.99 a month on one-month deals, with further discounts available on annual plans.

In brief there are five different ways to stream sports on your TV with ExpressVPN:
-With the native app for a smart TV or streaming device -By streaming on your computer and connecting to the TV with an HDMI cable -By mirroring or casting wirelessly to your TV or streaming device from your computer or mobile device -By connecting to an ExpressVPN-enabled router , which allows for unlimited devices and makes it super simple to connect to different server locations simultaneously -With MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s solution for devices that cannot install a VPN, such as Apple TV or gaming consoles. For more information on all the ways to get ExpressVPN on your big-screen TV, click here or contact a 24/7 Support agent for step-by-step instructions.
I connected to the VPN but my internet speed is slow!
If your internet speed is slow or your streaming seems to lag, there are a few possible reasons:
-The distance of your selected VPN server location from your physical location -Your connection type (wired connections are more reliable than wireless connections) -Suboptimal interconnectivity between the VPN and your ISP -Slow internet connection speed at your location -Your device type and processing power
Try each of the following steps to troubleshoot:
-Download the latest version of ExpressVPN -Connect to a different VPN server location -Change your VPN protocol
If you try each of the above and are still experiencing issues with your streaming speed, contact the ExpressVPN Support Team 24/7 and someone will be with you in seconds.
I connected to the suggested VPN server location but I can’t log in to the streaming service!
No worries! Server load changes rapidly (especially when lots of people are trying to watch certain events), but that’s exactly why ExpressVPN has high-speed servers all over the world. If you’re trying to access a site in the U.S. or Germany, for instance, try connecting to a different server location in those countries.
If you’re trying to connect to a country with one server location, the first step is to check your location settings. If you’re on a mobile device, disconnect from the VPN, turn off location services, then connect to the VPN again. On both Windows and Mac computers, you can turn off Location Services within the Privacy & Security settings menu.
For more help, you can always talk to a member of our Support Team, available 24/7 by live chat.
What other streaming services can I watch with ExpressVPN?

If you want to watch your favorite team from anywhere—even while traveling or on unsecured networks like public Wi-Fi—ExpressVPN is a great way to enhance your sports streaming experience.

How to Watch 2024 Giro d’Italia
With a clear favorite, two time trials, and majestic mountain passes, cycling’s most beautiful Grand Tour promises a spectacle at its finest.
How to Watch the Giro d’Italia in Canada
How to watch the giro d’italia for free, what happened last year, riders to watch.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:
Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26
How to Watch the Giro d’Italia in the U.S.
If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.
Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)
You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).
If you live in Canada, you can catch the action on FloBikes ($29.99 monthly or $150 for the year). Stream or cast from your desktop, mobile, or TV. The app is now available on Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, and Apple TV. And live coverage starts at 7:45 AM EDT for most stages.
While we haven’t found legal ways to watch the Giro LIVE for free, you may be able to catch extended highlights on NBC/Peackock’s YouTube Channel a couple of hours after the events. However, where there is a will, there is a way. Just, “be careful with the ads.”
The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.
This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.
Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.
The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.
Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.
Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.
The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.
We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.
And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.
But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.
The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.
At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.
The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.
The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.
That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.
The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.
You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .
For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.
In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.
But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.
Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)
With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).
The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.
Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)
Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.
Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)
We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.
The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.
Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)
Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.
Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)
Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.
Nairo Quintana (Movistar)
One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.
The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).
Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.

Giro d'Italia 2024: How to Watch a UCI World Tour Cycling Livestream for Free
It's the first Grand Tour of the 2024 season.
The battle for the maglia rosa begins this weekend, as the world's best riders take on the 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia.
The first of the three Grand Tours in 2024, this year's event sees two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar make his debut in the race for UAE Team Emirates.
The Slovenian star is marked out as favorite to win with the bookies, with strong competition set to come from last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) over the course of the 21-stage event.
Below, we'll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the Giro d'Italia live wherever you are in the world.
Giro d'Italia 2024: Where and when is it?
The 2024 Giro d'Italia begins with Stage 1 in Torino on Saturday, May 4, and climaxes with a passage through Rome on Sunday, May 26.
A full schedule for this year's event can be found further down.
How to watch the Giro d'Italia 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN
If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.
With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.
Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Giro d'Italia 2024 using a VPN
- With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the 2024 Giro d'Italia live may vary.
- If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
- If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
- All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
- And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave .

How to watch stage 1, 2 and 3 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia
T he 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia beings in Turin on Saturday, May 4 with two explosive stages ready to be launching pads for the highly-anticipated debut of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) in the race.
The other favourites, like last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), will have to fight to keep up with the rampaging Slovenian on the first summit finish on stage 2 on May 5. The race is expected to settle down into a more normal rhythm on Monday's stage 3.
Check out Cyclingnews ' complete guide to watching the Giro d'Italia .
The Grande Partenza of the 2024 Giro d'Italia is in Venaria Reale, on the northern side of Turin, looping around the city before heading back into town via two major climbs, the Superga and Colle Maddalena.
Just 140km long, the opening stage will pack a big punch with the 6.1km Maddalena (average grade 7.4% with pitches to 12%) crested with 22km to go. An unclassified climb on the Bivio di San Vito was a late addition, coming 3km from the finish and ruling out a big bunch sprint.
Stage 2 ramps up the competition even more with the first summit finish at the Santuario di Oropa (11.8km at 6.2%, max 13%).
Cyclingnews will be bringing you full reports, results, news, interviews, and analysis throughout the races. Read on to find out how to watch the racing action via live stream, no matter your location, with NordVPN .
Free live broadcasts will be available in many countries including S4C in Wales, EITB in the Basque Country, VTM in Belgium, SBS in Australia, and RAI in Italy.
Paid options to watch the opening stages of the Giro d'Italia include Max in the USA ($10 per month or $100 per year with ads, $16/$150 for an ad-free experience), FloBikes in Canada (CAN$150 for the year or CAN$29.99 per month) and on Eurosport and live streaming on Discovery+ in the UK (£6.99 per month or £59.99 per year). In Geraint Thomas' home region in Wales, S4C will show the race on live television or their streaming service S4C Clic .

Without his arch nemesis, Jonas Vineguarrd, or last year’s winner, Primož Roglič, the overwhelming, almost nailed on favourite for this year’s race is the phenomenal Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Although he’s not won a grand tour since 2021’s Tour de France , such is his form this season that many commentators believe he will simply win the race at a canter.
Grand tours, however, are not won at a canter, they are full of pitfalls and surprises. They are arduous beyond common reason and as unpredictable as particles in an atomic collider. So, to tame and win a grand tour takes skill, ability and in no small part good fortune to avoid crashes, illness and a loss of form.
Lining up in the hope that Pogacar won’t have everything his own way are a host of stellar challengers such as Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R), Cian Uijtdebroeks and Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe), Luke Plapp (Jayco-Visma) and the veterans Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).
These riders all come with strong teams but none stronger than that of Pogačar who, instead of workers, has a team of 5-star generals with the likes of Rui Oliveira, Rafal Majka, Domen Noval and Felix Grossschartner backing him up.
With Sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step), attacking riders like Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Christophe Laporte (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and a few of the best time trialists, including Fillipo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), there are stars waiting to shine on every stage as the most magical of the three grand Tours takes its annual tour round Bella Italia.
Read on for where to watch Giro d'Italia 2024 cycling action live, wherever you are in the world.

Giro d'Italia 2024 stages
With the 6km Colle Maddalena coming just 30km from the finish line of Stage 1, there are some who are predicting this could be the most decisive climb of the race. If Pogacar decides to go solo and grab the Magnolia Rosa he could simply just defend it all the way to Rome. Although plausible, this is, however, unlikely. He is more likely to wait for Stage 2 with the first summit finish of the race at the legendary Santuario di Oropa. This is a climb all the greats would love to win on to emulate the idolised Marco Pantani so expect the race to get a proper shake up here.
After two tough opening days, the race then calms down for three standard flat stages into Fossani, Andora and Lucca so expect long breaks, controlled races and pulsating sprint finishes. To liven things back up there will be 11.6km of the famous Strade Bianche on Stage 6, with the Tuscan gravel roads set to add some chaos into the mix together with a short uphill finish into Rapolano Terme.
The following day there will be more chances to shake up the general classification in the long 37.2km time trial with the final seven all uphill. Stage 8 and we hit some real mountains with the race crossing the Appenines for summit finish number two, the 14.6km climb to Prati di Tivo which is followed the next day by a sprint stage so the GC riders can take a back-seat.
After the first rest day, the race resumes with a bang and summit finish number three: the 17.9km climb to Bocca della Selva at the end of Stage 10 but then settles down once more as tracing the eastern coast there are three gentle stages including Stage 13 which is 180km with little more than 100m of elevation.
Stage 14 sees the race enter its decisive stage with the second time trial: a flat out 31km test before the mountains arrive with a vengeance the following day. Stage 15 packs in four giant peaks including the evil pass del Mortirolo. Then things get even worse the next day as the race crosses the Passo di Stelvio (from the easy side) before finishing with a double whammy of the Passo Pinei and Monte Pana. Arriving in the heart of the magical Dolomites, Stage 17 crosses four giant peaks and the penultimate summit finish up the pass del Brocon to end a hectic four days.
Stage 18 and 19 will be for the sprinters and chancers as the overall contenders rest up before the finale, the twin ascents of the legendary Monte Grappa on Stage 20. This will seal the over all winner, if it hasn’t already been decided before the processional stage through Rome on the final day.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs , followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes, RIDE BRITAIN . Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running his 100 Climbs brand and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.

The Giro d'Italia is one of three Grand Tour cycling events that will capture attention from across the globe this weekend.
Riders will rise, fall and rarely cruise along more than 3,300km of Italian roads as they seek to clinch the esteemed title.
Primož Roglič claimed the title in 2023, but history does not look favourably on champions in the following edition. Nobody has won consecutive Giro titles in over 30 years.

In any case, Roglič has opted against competing in this year's event, leaving red-hot Tadej Pogačar as the overwhelming favourite to go all the way.
Two-time Tour de France winner Pogačar is yet to win the Giro, and will be determined to make the most of his status as the man to beat.

Primož Roglič is the reigning Giro d'Italia champion after he clinched the title last year by the narrowest of margins.
He sealed victory with a 14-second gap to runner-up Geraint Thomas, who led the Giro from Stage 16 to 19 before Roglič stormed through.
