The Vaccines are an English indie rock band from West London. They formed in 2010, and have achieved platinum sales status.

The Vaccines are one of those classic examples of pretty much instantaneous success; they formed in 2010, with their links to the UK indie scene already well-established - frontman Justin Young had previously recorded and toured under the name Jay Jay Pistolet, albeit with an altogether more folky sound, whilst guitarist Freddie Cowan is the younger brother of his counterpart in The Horrors, Tom.

By February of 2011, just a couple of early singles were enough to land The Vaccines the prestigious opening slot on the NME Awards Tour that year - previously occupied by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Coldplay - and by the time they released their debut album, ‘What Did You Expect from The Vaccines?’, they had already built up a sizable fanbase of the back of tracks like ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)’ and ‘Post Break-Up Sex’. That first album charted at number four in their native UK, and would eventually go on to be the biggest-selling debut of the year on those shores. They wasted little time in following it up; album number two, ‘Come of Age’, was released in September of 2012, after a successful lap of European festivals, and topped the album charts in the UK.

Live reviews

When I walked in to see The Vaccines at Ally Pally in May 2012, I walked amongst well-to-do 20-somethings and 30-somethings and a few skinny jean, band-shirt youngsters. But as soon as the Ramones inspired riff of "No Hope" reverberates through the crowd and Justin Young chimes in with "I could bore you with the truth about an uneventful youth" all and sundry revert to their teenage selves and belt along with Young, head-shaking and air-guitarring along with impassioned abandon.

The Vaccines are the kind of band that bring you back to those awkward, hopeless years, no matter where you are in life. They remind you of your first love, and the love that you thought would be your last. 'Come of Age' perfectly encapsulates the raw grittiness of disparate youth but with the backdrop of 50's Rock and Roll and Ramones raw edge -a strange combination on paper but simply astounding and helplessly enjoyable live.

The setlist dips in and out of 'Come of Age' and The Vaccines' first album 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?' going from "No Hope" to raucous "Wreckin Bar RaRaRa" then outsider anthem "Teenage Icon," critically acclaimed and fan favourite "If You Wanna" and finally amped up "Norgaard."

As the show closed and the 10,000 strong crowd spilled onto the streets, I saw people of all ages and differences sweaty and fervent with musical ecstasy. The Vaccines performed a truly amazing setlist that kept audiences singing and cheering for more and more. No doubt one of the best live bands to come out of London in the past few years.

A boisterous band du jour, there were many who doubted the lasting capabilities of West Londoners The Vaccines, featuring members of Jay Jay Pistolet, and the little bro of Tom Cowan (The Horrors). With early plaudits from Clash, Zane Lowe and NME for YouTube demo “If You Wanna...”, the foursome blew up, trebucheted into the mainstream for all to see. Their debut record What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? toyed with their hype, yet remained a brash anthology of youthful guitar-pop. Those that had doubts were being dissuaded; when the band released Come Of Age, which went straight to the number one spot, almost all naysayers had been converted. The band famously debuted their live prowess in a high profile, sold-out show at The Flowerpot, with members of Franz Ferdinand, The Maccabees, White Lies and Mumford & Sons in attendance. Not bad, eh?

The Vaccines have gone strength to strength with their shows, unleashing torrents of scuzzy rock onto crowds via pleasers such as “Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)”, “Nørgaard” and “Post Break-Up Sex”. These days, they're bolstered by a beefy back catalogue (“No Hope” and “Teenage Icon” shining particularly bright), legions of diehard fans and a raw, energising live show that'll scorch your eyebrows clean off. Recently(ish), they also played to a sell-out audience at the 10,000 capacity Alexandria Palace – not too shabby for a pack of unlikely pals after only a couple of years together.

Not many artists when given a 40 minute slot on the Reading main stage would even dream about playing a 15 song setlist. The Vaccines managed this feat with ease as they tore through almost every song from their first album along with some from the sophomore effort 'Come Of Age'.

Partly hyped along by the brilliant Reading Festival crowd the boys began with singles 'No Hope' and 'Wrecking Bar' as the crowd jumped and danced along with equal intensity. Their in your face style punk/rock is perfect for a festival set as each brilliant track moves along at rapid pace and keeps the audience hyped up throughout. The finale of 'Nørgaard' is just over a minute long yet the band play with such ferocity that you get the impression if it lasted any longer their instruments may spontaneously combust.

Frontman Justin Young staggers around the stage as if ambling drunkly around his local boozer yet he knows when his duties as frontman are required as he introduces fan favourites 'Post Breakup Sex' and 'If You Wanna'. The best moment though was a mass thousand strong singalong to 'Wetsuit' which sounded so brilliant in the summer sun.

Fourth time I have seen the Vaccines and this was another great show. The youngish crowd certainly contributed to a party atmosphere that seemed to inspire the band to show their full athleticism on stage throughout The setlist made up of tracks from all 4 of their albums including 5 tracks from the new release Combat Sports which already went down extremely well. Ill certainly go and see them again, one of the best live bands around. Also got to meet them after the show for an album signing , congratulated them on a great gig and thoroughly nice chaps they are too.

I just saw these guys two nights ago and I'm still humming their set list-- what a kick ass show. Their stage prescence was electric, and the crowd matched them as soon as the first song was kicked out. If you're thinking of seeing The Vaccines, do it. They put on a great show with unbelieveable energy, and it's impossible to stop yourself from dancing throughout the set, seriously. It starts with foot tapping but then turns into full blown jumping around; their energy is infectious. See them, dance to them. Get lost in the music and jam. Theyre damn good.

After going to get drinks after the two support acts, somehow me and four friends managed to walk through the hundreds to get like three rows from the front.

In the mad mosh pit I lost my cigarettes and people were actually smoking behind me haha!

The mosh pit was insane and the grown men were crushing the younger generations however it was absolutely amazing.

Luckily we got so close to the front that we could see, if we were any further behind we would have seen nothing! The atmosphere was unreal

Another polished and blistering set from a band, fast becoming 1 of my favourite live pleasures. An experience further enhanced by it taking place in a very special venue.

Hopefully, the 'Brude' with it's cult status, will attract more acts, who can easily fill bigger venues (and make more dollar!), but play there for the sheer enjoyment. None of which have the same charm, however.

The Vaccines at the Brudenell, a match made in indie heaven!

The 02 Bournemouth is an epic venue with an awesome atmosphere but last night was electric. The vaccines absoulty killed it, playing there new stuff and all the classic, with the whole crowd sing along. Supporting band, Dream wife, also smashed it. I hadn't heard them before but their good lyrics and stage presence got them onto my regular playlist. All in all a good night.

The Vaccines played yet another brilliant set on Friday at Brighton Dome. This was the first time I had visited this venue but having seen The Vaccines on three previous occasions, they did not let me down.

Playing a range of songs from their albums, it was a great night enjoyed by all. They even played my favourite hits - Wetsuit, Post Break-Up Sex and Teenage Icon.

Well what I can say I already have said lol.

Simply these guys are brilliant, seen them a few times now in different locations, Roundhouse and the Leas being the best whilst I liked Ally Pally its just a trek to get to.

This band write great music and sing with such energy and fun. You cannot go away from a Vaccines concert disappointed....

Two years on from their last album ‘ Back In Love City ’, The Vaccines have announced their sixth studio LP, ‘Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations’ (slated for release on 12th January 2024). Speaking about the record’s title - which is inspired by the lyrics to DonMclean’s ‘American Pie’ - frontman Justin Young has explained: “I was living in LA while writing this record, and ‘American Pie’ is a song about disillusionment with America and the American dream, and [Don McLean’s] feeling that something had died. I guess I was coming to terms with similar things – my understanding of what the real West Coast of America was, after growing up on a diet of American pop culture. That was all coming to a head as various relationships were ending. That was the seed of it. It’s about the loss of dreams.”

The news also arrived alongside the LP’s lead single, ‘Heartbreak Kid’, which harks back to the energy and youthful vitality of their debut. “There are two types of people in the world - people that have had their heart broken and people that haven’t had their heart broken yet”, Justin has commented. “‘Heartbreak Kid’ is a call to arms. A reminder that in a world where too many of us feel too detached too often, facing your feelings head on can make you feel more alive, even if it feels like the world is ending. It’s a song to keep you company on the busy freeway that connects loss to discovery.”

Listen to ‘Heartbreak Kid’ below:

The Vaccines will also embark on a huge headline tour of the UK and Europe to celebrate the release of ‘Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations’, with presale tickets going live from 9:00am on Tuesday 26th September and general sale from 9:00am on Friday 29th September (both via The Vaccines website ). The Kooks have announced that they’ll be heading to the United States for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines.

Kicking off on February 29 with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will bring the two beloved British bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks confirming that they’ll play their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Watch a video of the band’s Luke Pritchard announcing the tour here .

Inside In/Inside Out is, without a doubt, the best set of anthems for anyone experiencing growing pains. Centered around the complex emotions almost every teenager encounters, The Kooks’ debut album was bound to be a hit. Back when it was first released, a Pitchfork review described the album as “youthful overconfidence” and lacking a sense of direction. This exact sentiment is why the album remains so compelling today.

Lo-Fi Musicians: Tape Heroes Of The 80s And 90s

The Kooks released Inside In/Inside Out in January 2006. It was an immediate hit, landing the No.2 spot in the UK Albums Chart for two weeks. The band itself had only formed a year prior to the recording of the album. (Their name came from the group’s mutual admiration for Hunky Dory -era Bowie.) In 2005, they recorded their first demo, focused on landing gigs. But after being scouted at the Brighton Free Butt Festival, they quickly signed to Virgin and recorded their debut album.

The Vaccines have shared the final preview of their new LP today (September 8) with the song ‘Jump Off The Top’.

The new single, which you can hear in the below live video (shot during The Vaccines’ show at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London in July), was first debuted live before the recording of ‘Back In Love City’.

The Vaccines are already set to embark on a UK tour this month in support of their new record, and they will continue their promotion of ‘Back In Love City’ in April 2022 with another tour.

“Playing live is the lifeblood of this band,” Vaccines frontman Justin Young said in a statement. “It’s where our music comes to life and where we get to connect with all the people that make what we do possible.

Speaking to NME in a recent interview , Young recalled the band’s experience of recording ‘Back In Love City’ in a Texas studio that was near Donald Trump ‘s border wall between the US and Mexico.

“Trump’s wall ran through the property [of the studio] so it was really quite an extreme place to go, having started making the album in west London,” the frontman said. “The nearest town to the studio is where all of the internment camps are, where the kids are separated from their parents and stuff. You were very aware of that when you were there.”

Antibody reduces risk of malaria in children

At a glance.

  • A single dose of a monoclonal antibody given to children 6 to 10 years of age in Mali proved up to 77% effective at preventing malaria disease.
  • Researchers plan to test the antibody in other populations at high risk of death from malaria, including infants and pregnant people.

Mosquito on a leaf.

More than 600,000 people worldwide die from malaria every year, and most are children in Africa. A parasite called Plasmodium , which is spread by mosquitos, causes the disease. Most cases and deaths are caused by the species P. falciparum.

Malaria-prevention strategies include spraying insecticides and administering drugs to help prevent disease. But these are hampered by emerging resistance to insecticides and anti-malarial drugs. The use of preventive drugs also requires frequent contacts with health care providers, which can limit their use in low-resource countries. The recent approval of two new malaria vaccines is a major milestone, but their efficacy is limited and short-lived.

NIH researchers have been working to develop laboratory-made antibodies called monoclonal antibodies to help prevent malaria infections. One, called L9LS, was based on an antibody isolated from a volunteer who received an experimental malaria vaccine. The researchers engineered this candidate antibody to make it last longer in the body.

L9LS binds to a specific protein on the surface of P. falciparum sporozoites, the parasite stage that is transmitted from mosquitos to humans. L9LS binding prevents sporozoites from infecting cells in the liver. This is a necessary step for parasites before infecting blood cells and spreading to other mosquitoes through blood feeding.

In 2022, a research team at NIH’s Vaccine Research Center found that L9LS protected 15 of 17 (88%) adults who had never had malaria from a controlled P. falciparum infection. In a new study, researchers from NIH and the University of Bamako in Mali tested the antibody in children over a six-month malaria season. The results were published on April 26, 2024, in the New England Journal of Medicine .

Illustration shows injection of the monoclonal antibody into one arm of a child with a closeup of a mosquito biting his other arm and the antibody neutralizing the malaria sporozoites before they reach the liver.

The study took place in Mali, where malaria transmission is extremely high from July to December. The team first tested three different doses of the antibody in adults. This was followed by two different doses in children. When no serious side effects were seen, an additional 225 children joined the study to test whether the antibody could prevent malaria infection and disease.

The children received a single injection with one of two doses of L9LS or a placebo at the beginning of the malaria season. Over the next six months, only 19% of the children who received the higher dose of the antibody and 28% who received the lower dose developed clinical symptoms of malaria. In contrast, almost 60% of those who received the placebo developed symptoms of malaria. The high dose, then, was 77% effective at preventing malaria disease.

L9LS also prevented malaria infections: 40% of those who received the higher dose and 48% of those who received the lower dose had evidence of the parasite in their blood. In contrast, 81% of those who received the placebo had evidence of the parasite. Side effects from injection of the antibody were mild and resolved on their own in all groups.

“A long-acting monoclonal antibody delivered at a single health care visit that rapidly provides high-level protection against malaria in these vulnerable populations would fulfill an unmet public health need,” says Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

An ongoing clinical trial in Kenya is now testing the antibody in children 5 months to 5 years of age. Researchers are also preparing to test whether the antibody can safely prevent malaria during pregnancy.

Ukraine war latest updates: Russia launches surprise advance on Ukraine - but why has Moscow opened up second front in war?

Russia has launched an attack in Kharkiv away from recent battlegrounds, Ukraine has said - as Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists his forces were "prepared" for the assault. Two civilians have been killed in the attack, a local governor has said.

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for today.

We'll be back with any major updates overnight, and we'll resume our regular live updates tomorrow morning.

Thanks for following along.

In our previous post, we told you about a reported Ukrainian strike on the occupied region of Luhansk.

Now, Russian news agencies have quoted officials as saying three people have been killed and seven others have been injured.

According to Russian state media, the attack triggered a large fire at an oil storage depot in the region.

"The enemy opened fire on the peaceful city of Rovenky," Russia installed regional Governor Leonid Pasechnik wrote on Telegram.

"Because of the shelling, the oil depot was engulfed by flames and nearby houses were damaged."

Ukrainian bloggers and Telegram channels reported the strike, saying the oil depot was directly hit.

It was the second such attack in three days.

On Wednesday, an attack on an oil depot in the regional centre of Luhansk injured five people.

Mr Pasechnik reported at least one of the dead was an employee at the depot.

The Ukrainian military has launched a strike and triggered a fire near an oil storage depot in the occupied Luhansk region, Russian state news agency TASS has reported.

Ukrainian bloggers and Telegram channels said the depot in the town of Rovenky was hit.

Several photos have emerged online appearing to show a large blaze, but these have not been verified by Sky News.

In Vovchansk, Ukrainian officials have been helping civilians evacuate due to the heavy shelling.

The border town in the Kharkiv region came under intense attacks.

In his evening address, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi had reported to him that "heavy fighting" was taking place all along the more than 1,000-km (600-mile) front line.

Ukraine chased Russian troops out of most of the Kharkiv region in 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion in February of that year.

But after weathering a Ukrainian counteroffensive last year, Russian forces are back on the offensive and slowly advancing in the Donetsk region that lies further south.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an updated statement on the situation in Kharkiv.

In a post on  Telegram , the Ukrainian president said Russian troops have tried to expand their operations.

But he added that Ukraine understands the "scope of the occupier's forces".

"We see his plan," he said. "Our soldiers, our artillery, our drones respond to the occupier."

He also said Ukrainian forces were adding their "strength" along the state border and the entire frontline near Kharkiv.

"We will invariably destroy the occupier in such a way as to thwart any Russian offensive intentions," the 46-year-old leader wrote.

"Everything depends on the stability of our soldiers, and everyone who holds a position now protects the position of all of Ukraine.

"It is important that partners support our soldiers and Ukrainian stability with timely supplies. Really timely. The package that really helps is the weapons brought to Ukraine, not just the announcement of the package."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked Joe Biden after a $400m military aid package was announced by the US.

The Ukrainian president said the assistance will "help save civilian lives" and strengthen troops on the frontline.

"The United States maintains its leadership role in supporting Ukraine and this has historic significance," he added.

This is the third tranche of aid for Ukraine since Congress passed supplemental funding in late April after months of gridlock.

The package includes:

  • High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and rockets for them
  • Munitions for Patriot and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems
  • Anti-aircraft and anti-tank munitions
  • An array of armoured vehicles, such as Bradley and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles
  • Coastal and riverine patrol boats
  • Demolition munitions
  • High-speed anti-radiation missiles
  • Protective gear, spare parts and other weapons and equipment

The weapons are being sent through presidential drawdown authority, which pulls systems and munitions from existing US stockpiles so they can go quickly to the war front.

By Deborah Haynes , security and defence editor, in Vovchansk

Terror and grief were the overwhelming emotions from dozens of mainly elderly men and women who fled the Ukrainian border town of Vovchansk after Russian forces attacked.

Gathered at an evacuation point just outside the town, they said it had been the fiercest fighting they had ever experienced since the full-scale invasion.

Sky News followed a pair of volunteer rescuers, who drove a white van into the tow to help residents evacuate.

Smoke hung over the road on the way – we were told all roads into Vovchansk were being targeted by Russian artillery, rockets and drones.

One of the attacks had ignited a fire in a forest that lined the road, sending clouds of smoke into the air.

The streets of the part of the town we entered were almost completely empty.

We pulled into a residential area of bungalows.

A group of five elderly men and women sat or stood on a bench on the side of the road, seemingly happy to stay put.

The rescue team pulled up outside an address where they had been told four residents wanted to be evacuated.

They knocked on the door, but no one replied. Instead, a petite, grey-haired woman who lives in the next door house pushed open her green gate and told the rescuers that her neighbours had already gone.

Distraught, Valentina, 74, had no plans to leave, but the rescuers managed to persuade her.

"Let's go, don’t stay here, it is dangerous," they said.

Suddenly there was a boom – it seemed to change her mind.

Gathering a few simple belongings, she was led out of her home and into the minibus.

The mayor said some 500 people from the town have been evacuated since the attack began, but he said the town’s population was 3,000, with many more yet to leave.

Evacuation operations are set to continue.

By Sean Bell , military analyst

At 5am, the Russians launched a surprise attack on the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, killing two civilians and injuring at least five others.

The Ukrainian border community of Vovchansk was one of the targets - this community is only 5km away from the Russian border, and the attack led to the evacuation of 3,000 residents.

Russian forces are reported to have advanced around 1km, before Ukrainian reinforcements were deployed.

So why has Russia opened up a second front in the war?

There are probably two key reasons for this latest Russian attack.

First, the Russian border town of Belgorod is a logistics hub for Russian military activity, and is regularly targeted by artillery from Ukrainian territory.

President Putin has long promised to create a buffer zone to push Ukrainian forces out of artillery range, which would limit the attacks on this frontier town.

Secondly, although most analysts believe Russia would struggle to seize Kharkiv, the attack does force Ukraine to spread its limited resources across a broader front, leaving it more vulnerable to further attacks.

Russian's priority still appears to be the Donbas - a primary objective of what it calls its special military operation.

Russia's military are evidently exploiting the window of opportunity created by Ukraine's current shortage of weapons, and are reported to be preparing for a major summer offensive.

Ukraine's strategy appears to be to trade territory for time, making Russia pay a high price for every metre of ground seized, pending the arrival of the West's next delivery of military aid.

But, momentum and initiative are vital commodities in war, and Russia has both at this crucial juncture.  Ukraine is on the back foot, and could face a very difficult next few weeks on the battlefield.

The UK's foreign secretary, Lord Cameron, said last week Ukraine has a right to use British-supplied weapons against targets inside Russia.

Referring to those comments, senior Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev warned the West against greenlighting Ukrainian attacks on its territory using Western-supplied weapons.

After what Moscow said were threats from France, Britain and the US, Russia said earlier this week it would practise the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons as part of a military exercise.

These exercises are to work out Russia's response to any attacks on the country using weapons supplied by the West, Mr Medvedev claims.

He said the Russian response would "be aimed not only at Kyiv" - and took personal aim at Lord Cameron.

"I remember this guy quite well. I worked with him when he became prime minister. An ordinary dull Brit. At that time, he was joyfully stupid and looked like a young devil who was revelling in his unexpectedly acquired position," he wrote on the Telegram messaging app, which has been translated.

"Under certain circumstances, the response [to such attacks] will be aimed not only at Kyiv," he added.

He added: "And not just with conventional explosives, but also with a special kind of arms."

As we have been reporting throughout the day, Russian forces gave started the first stage of an operation in Kharkiv.

Fierce fighting has been taking place in parts of the northeastern region, and Ukrainian officials have claimed Russian troops have advanced by 1km.

Leading US thinktank the Institute for the Study of War has said evidence indicates the initial Russian attacks have been carried out for reconnaissance and not as a major drive to seize Kharkiv city.

It has also suggested five objectives Russia might be trying to achieve with the operation:

  • To thin out Ukrainian forces along the 600-mile frontline, and create opportunities in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.
  • Draw Ukraine forces towards Vovchansk in Kharkiv to facilitate Russia's efforts to seize Kupyansk - another city in Kharkiv.
  • Create a demilitarised or sanitary buffer zone in Ukraine.
  • Instil panic in Ukraine.
  • Set conditions for a larger future offensive on Kharkiv.

The ISW added that Russia was unlikely to take control of Kharkiv city.

Open source data suggests Moscow's forces have an insufficient number of troops in nearby areas to seize it, the thinktank added.

"If the Russian command intended to seize Kharkiv city, then Russian forces would have likely also attacked to the west and northwest of Kharkiv city as well," it said.

It also explained that Russia's use of its airspace for the Kharkiv attacks highlights the "urgent need" for the US to provide more long-range air defences to Ukraine.

"Ukraine would be better able to defend Kharkiv oblast if Ukrainian air defenders could intercept Russian aircraft in Russian airspace before they drop their glide bombs," it added.
