Sunday set a travel record for U.S. airports, according to TSA screenings

3 million people were screened by the tsa.

Julie Moreno , Executive Producer/Digital Content

Sunday set a travel record for U.S. airports, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

More than 3 million passengers went through TSA screenings on Sunday.

Recommended Videos

“Yesterday, for the first time since its founding in November 2001, Transportation Security Administration officers screened more than three million travelers on a single day at airports across the country. It was an extraordinary achievement: TSA fully, unerringly, and efficiently checked 35 passengers every second, along with all their luggage and carry-on baggage, while demonstrating unwavering professionalism and respect for travelers during the intensely busy holiday weekend,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

Mayorkas used the statistic to push Congress to permanently ensure pay fairness.

“It is the smart thing to do for everyone who depends on TSA to keep our skies and our country safe, and it is the right thing to do for these great public servants,” Mayorkas said.

Last month, officials said the San Antonio International Airport was experiencing a “record-breaking summer” due to added nonstop flights.

They expected to see more than 300,000 passengers flying in and out of San Antonio last week.

Because of the increased number of travelers all summer, they urged people to arrive at the airport at least two hours before the plane ticket’s listed boarding time.

What’s in Store for the 2024 Hurricane Season?

Hurricane Beryl set records as the earliest Category 5 storm ever. What does that mean for the rest of hurricane season? Here’s what travelers need to know.

From above, a group of three homes is shown, with two of their roofs almost completely torn off. The houses sit on a green hillside, and houses and green hills are visible in the distance.

By Christopher Kuo

When Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm last week, it broke records and left a trail of damage across the Caribbean . The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, and also the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the Atlantic in the month of June — a portent of what experts say is a hurricane season that will be much more intense than usual. It was also abnormal because of where it formed, farther south and east than is typical for storms of this magnitude.

After tearing through the Caribbean and the Yucatán Peninsula, the storm landed in southeast Texas, canceling more than a thousand flights and cutting power for more than two million residents. The storm killed at least 15 people.

Hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with most storms developing between mid-August and mid-October. A broad swath of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic seaboard of the United States is affected by the storms. If you’re planning to travel during this hurricane season, here’s what you should know.

How bad will hurricane season be this year?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an 85 percent chance of a more active than normal season. An average season has about 14 named storms, but researchers at Colorado State University forecast that this year there will be 25, including six hurricanes that are Category 3 or higher.

More hurricanes are likely to occur because of the above-average water temperatures in the Caribbean and the tropical Atlantic. These warmer waters provide fuel for hurricanes and tend to be associated with lower pressure and a more unstable atmosphere, creating an environment conducive to storms, Phil Klotzbach, a senior research scientist in the department of atmospheric science at Colorado State , wrote in an email.

It seems as if the season is off to an early start. Why?

Warmer ocean temperatures are causing the hurricane season to start earlier than usual. Normally, storms would develop later in the season once the ocean has warmed , but this year parts of the Atlantic are already at 84 degrees, 2 to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, according to Dr. Klotzbach. These kinds of temperatures are normally associated with the peak of hurricane season in September.

It’s particularly unusual for such an intense storm like Beryl to form this early in the season: The storm reached Category 4 a week earlier than any storm had since 2005. “Usually the June and July storms are relatively benign,” said Kerry Emanuel, professor emeritus of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “They don’t get up to full strength, so it’s very rare to have this.”

What’s significant about the location of Beryl?

Beryl set another record, for the farthest east a hurricane has formed in the month of June, breaking a record set in 1933, Jennifer Collins, a professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida , wrote in an email. It also formed farther south than usual, affecting nations such as Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines that tend to be outside the maximum activity range of hurricanes, according to Dr. Emanuel.

When a storm forms in the tropics and farther east than typical — especially if it’s a severe hurricane like Beryl — it tends to be a harbinger of a very busy season, Dr. Klotzbach said. “It’s one thing to get weak systems in the deep tropics like we did in 2013, while it’s a whole different ballgame when we’re getting Category 5 hurricanes,” he added. “Unfortunately, Beryl is breaking records that were set in 1933 and 2005 — two of the busiest Atlantic hurricane seasons on record.”

Historically, the so-called ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao), plus Trinidad and Tobago, have been out of the hurricane zone. Has that changed?

It’s been years since a major hurricane has affected those islands.

Experts say that is unlikely to change. “We haven’t really observed any notable changes in terms of storms tracking over that region,” Dr. Klotzbach wrote.

Should I change my summer travel plans?

Many people choose to travel to hurricane-prone areas during the season, said Jackie Friedman, the president of Nexion Travel Group , a network of travel advisers, and most don’t face disruption from storms. “I don’t know of any advisers that would say, ‘I would not go to the Caribbean at all this summer,’” she said.

Dr. Klotzbach agreed that it’s not particularly risky to travel to the Caribbean. “The odds of any one spot getting hit by a hurricane during any short time span is going to be very small,” he said.

Ms. Friedman recommends purchasing travel insurance and considering taking a cruise instead of traveling to a single destination. “The benefit is the flexibility to avoid being in the eye of the storm,” she said. “They can modify their itineraries for a relatively pleasant vacation.”

Does travel insurance cover hurricanes?

Yes, but it’s important to purchase coverage early. Once a storm is named, newly purchased plans won’t cover claims tied to it. Travel insurance is meant to protect against unpredictable situations; once a storm is named, it’s considered a “foreseeable event.” So it’s best to purchase a plan before a storm develops.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | royal caribbean’s utopia of the seas set to arrive to port canaveral.

Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas departs the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France on Sunday, June 23, 2024 on its way for a July 11 arrival in Port Canaveral. (Courtesy/Bernard Biger/Royal Caribbean)

It’s the latest Oasis-class ship larger than its five sister vessels including 2022’s Wonder of the Seas, which also calls Port Canaveral home. It’s only second in size to the new Icon of the Seas, part of a larger class of ship that sails out of Miami.

The ship has been on a transatlantic voyage since late June after it left the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France where it had been under construction since 2022.

The 236,860-gross-ton Utopia is 1,188 feet long with 18 decks and a 5,668-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. Original ship in the class Oasis of the Seas was the largest in the world when it debuted in 2009 followed by 2010’s Allure of the Seas, 2016’s Harmony of the Seas, 2018’s Symphony of the Seas and 2022’s Wonder of the Seas.

Plans are for the vessel to make its way into port passing by Jetty Park at 7:15 a.m. and arriving to Cruise Terminal 1 by 8 a.m.

The ship has some shakedown cruises ahead of its debut with paying customers starting July 19 when it will begin three- and four-night Bahamas cruises, taking over the short-cruise duties from the recently departed Allure of the Seas.

It continues Royal’s strategy that began last fall of parking two of the world’s largest ships at Port Canaveral. Wonder of the Seas will continue year-round seven-night sailings.

Utopia’s role is part of what Royal Caribbean has dubbed the “ultimate short getaway” with each sailing making stops as the cruise line’s private Bahamas island Little Stirrup Cay, which it has renamed Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Similar to its sister ships, Utopia of the Seas features eight distinct neighborhoods including the popular open-air Central Park carved into the middle of the ship and the Boardwalk area that mimics the Jersey Shore at the aft of the vessel.

Unique to Utopia of the Seas is a themed railroad-dining experience called Royal Railway – Utopia Station and a new bar concept called the Pesky Parrot.

Its popular, twisting, 10-deck dry slide The Ultimate Abyss is the longest in the fleet, and the ship will be just the second home to the popular Southern restaurant The Mason Jar that debuted on Wonder of the Seas.

Utopia is also the first Oasis-class ship to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner burning fuel that is part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

‘The whole room was covered in blood’: Inside the Russian missile strike on a Kyiv children’s hospital

Warning, distressing content: a mother who was waiting with her eight-year-old daughter for surgery in the okhmatdyt children’s hospital in central kyiv tells tom watling of her terrifying experience as russia fired multiple missiles at the complex, article bookmarked.

O lena Danylova and her eight-year-old daughter watched as black smoke started to seep through the ceiling into the bomb shelter where they had just fled a Russian missile attack .

Moments earlier, her young daughter, who she asked not to be named, had been preparing to have hernia surgery at the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in central Kyiv .

The doctor had been preparing her for the operation on the fifth floor; the surgery was to take place on the seventh floor. She was next in line for an operation.

Then they heard the first explosions, somewhere in the distance. The three of them – mother, daughter, doctor – stopped in their tracks. All three knew full well that the most dangerous place to be during a missile attack is high-up.

“Then we heard another explosion, a bigger one … and we ran as fast as we could down to the bunker,” she said.

When they got down to the shelter – dozens of children and parents in front and behind them – they tried to stay calm. But the reality of what was happening was terrifying.

Emergency workers at the site of Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv

The two bombs, believed to be Russian Kh-101 cruise missiles , had hit nearby buildings, but one of the explosions had blown out the windows of the operating floors on the sixth and seventh levels of their building, sending shards of glass hurtling towards the patients and surgeons. Olena’s daughter had been just moments away from heading to surgery.

“The kid that was before my daughter was in the middle of the operation when the bomb hit, so they had to stop and wake him up, and then run to the shelter,” she said. “They told us the whole room was covered in blood.”

And then there was a loud bang and everything went black. A third missile had landed directly on their building.

The fire alarm started screeching. The children started crying. Black smoke started to seep into the shelter.

A woman carries a girl from the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital

The mother and daughter paced from one end of the shelter to the other, wondering whether to risk inhaling smoke or going outside and possibly being hit by a Russian double-tap, a frequently used tactic by Kremlin forces which involves firing a second, third or even fourth missile at a single site after emergency workers have already rushed to the scene. Her daughter “kept asking ‘what is happening now’ over and over again”.

With the smoke thickening, Olena decided they had to leave the shelter. “I was just in the mode of a robot. I had to do what I had to do; I had to save my child; I had to make sure we were heading into safety.

“When we came out, there were a lot of people, kids, with all kinds of injuries. Some of them were red from the surgeries, mothers were holding them and covering them with blankets.

“It was very chaotic. Nobody knew what to do. Everything was covered with broken glass and fallen windows. We were trying just not to fall into panic. But we saw a lot of smoke coming from the buildings. We heard firemen approaching.”

Rescuers work search for victims at the Okhmatdyt complex

Olena and her daughter had been caught up in one of Russia ’s most prolific attacks since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. At least 29 people were killed across Kyiv, with at least three hospitals damaged on both sides of the Dnipro river that divides the city. A doctor was among the two killed at Okhmatdyt, while children were among those killed elsewhere in the city.

The president’s office said the rockets completely destroyed the toxicology building of the Okhmatdyt complex and damaged four more departments. An initiative to raise 100 million hryvnias (£1.9m) for the hospital has already been set up.

Additional attacks on Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown in Kryvyi Rih about 400km (250 miles) to the south killed at least 10, while attacks in the more easterly city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region killed three. More than 190 people were injured.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian branch of the United Nations’ human rights commissioner, whose office is located nearby the Okhmatdyt hospital, described it as “really one of the worst attacks I have experienced during my time here”.

Rescuers, volunteers and medical workers clean up the rubble at the Okhmatdyt hospital

Ukrainian officials labelled the attack genocide. US president Joe Biden called it a “a horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality”. Russia, meanwhile, made false claims that the destruction wrought upon the children’s hospital was the result of a misfired Ukrainian air defence missile, an allegation that the UN has said is highly unlikely.

Video has already emerged appearing to show what appears to be a Russian warhead flying towards the hospital seconds before the explosion.

Ukraine’s key allies sat down for the first of a three-day Nato summit in the US on Tuesday evening still reeling from the violence of an attack that seems for all intents and purposes to have been aimed at civilians.

“Putin sends his greetings to the Nato summit by bombing a childrens’ hospital,” wrote Lithuanian foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis. “As if any clarification was needed as to why Ukraine must have all possible support now, and real guarantees for security in the future.”

When Olena and her daughter finally returned home on Monday, she said they took some sedatives, collapsed onto their beds and “tried to get ourselves together”.

The doctor called her later on. “Of course you know the surgery has to be postponed indefinitely,” he told her.

No matter, she thought, her daughter sleeping soundly in the next door room.

3 big mistakes people traveling to Japan make, according to someone who's visited 11 times

  • Grace Cheng, a 22-year-old travel blogger based in NYC, has visited Japan 11 times.
  • She said travelers going to Japan for the first time consistently make a few mistakes.
  • Travelers focus on Tokyo, Cheng added, but don't leave enough time for other cities.

Insider Today

Out of the 34 countries travel blogger Grace Cheng has visited, none has left such a lasting impression than Japan . From visiting historical temples during cherry blossom season to the diverse and delicious food scene , Japan stole her heart.

"It's so different than what you see here in the States, and it's so different from any other country," she said.

Cheng, who is 22 and based in NYC, has noticed the country becoming a "hot spot" for tourists.

The International Trade Administration shows that the number of US travelers flying to Japan was already over 900,000 from January to May, a 17.4% increase from the same time period in 2023. One factor driving the surge in tourists from the US is the strongest dollar-to-yen exchange rate in recent history. As of July 8, $1 buys 160.74 yen.

Cheng first visited Japan in 2017, and she's gone 11 times since then. Here, she shares three of the biggest mistakes to avoid when planning a trip to Japan to better your chances of immersing yourself in the culture and exploring off the beaten path.

Mistake 1: They overfill their itineraries

There is so much to explore in Japan, from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo's famous Shibuya crossing (one of the busiest in the world) to the serene tranquility of the gardens and shrines in Kyoto.

But as excited as tourists can be to get a taste of everything, Cheng advises them to make sure their itineraries aren't jam-packed every day.

"The ideal time I would give Japan is probably seven to 10 days," Cheng says, adding that it is a sufficient time to explore a few regions without feeling rushed.

A shorter trip, especially for first-time visitors, could mean that "every day is just back-to-back attractions or moving," which ultimately results in high stress.

"You don't really get to experience Japan for what it's worth because you're just always on the go," she added.

Related stories

If you are truly pressed for time and only have a few days to spare in Japan, Cheng recommends prioritizing Tokyo, given it is a "major destination everyone has to go to" at least once in their life if they can.

Mistake 2: They don't set foot outside Tokyo

The issue with just visiting Tokyo, according to Cheng, is it doesn't fully represent how broad and versatile Japan or Japanese culture is.

If visitors want to get a real feel for the country's history, cuisine, and local charms, they should venture south and north of Tokyo.

"Tokyo is not Japan," Cheng said. "And you need to explore the other cities to actually have a sense of what Japan is like."

Outside Tokyo, one of her favorite cities is Sapporo, in the Hokkaido prefecture in the north of Japan. Cheng said she found cheaper prices and more friendly locals there.

"They just go out of their way, and you can definitely tell if someone is from Tokyo or the north," she said.

The food scene is also completely different depending on where you visit — Sapporo, for example, is renowned for soup curry, she said.

Osaka is a city near Kyoto so well-known for food that it's sometimes referred to as "Japan's kitchen." There, Cheng said she ate amazing tonkatsu, or fried pork cutlet, made to "perfection" with a side of all-you-can-eat shredded cabbage.

Mistake 3: They never turn off Google Maps

Being told to knowingly lose your way in a foreign country might sound scary, but Cheng insists it's one of the best strategies for discovering a new place.

"The best way to experience the streets and just get to know the country itself is just to get lost," Cheng said. "Don't use your phone. Don't use Google Maps."

She said some of her best interactions with locals and restaurants have come from walks around Japanese cities when she's avoided using her phone.

"If you go to Google and you search 'best restaurants in Tokyo,' for example, you're going to come up with all these restaurants that cater toward tourists," she said. "You're not going to actually experience the local dishes or a local atmosphere," and leave with a false "impression" of Japan.

"The best restaurants that I've found have come from stumbling upon them just walking the streets," she said.

An infamous Ukrainian time-traveller story has finally been explained

An infamous Ukrainian time-traveller story has finally been explained

If there’s one thing we like on indy100 , it’s a good time traveller story.

There’s been an influx of people on TikTok claiming to be from the future over recent times, but nothing will come close to the story of Sergei Ponomarenko for sheer weirdness.

In one of the most infamous cases of its kind, the story centers around a man who turned up in Kyiv, Ukraine back in 2006 claiming to be from years in the past.

He told authorities that he was born in 1932. He looked the part, carrying an old-fashioned camera and a dated outfit.

Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter

The most compelling thing was that he held a Soviet document from the 1950s, which he claimed showed he was the age of 25.

@bethany.gets.weird Time Traveler Sergei Ponomarenko #timetravel #ufo #conspiracy #unexplained

Ponomarenko then proceeded to show people pictures that he claimed he’d taken on his camera in Kyiv. After they’d been developed, authorities found that the images did indeed show Kyiv in the 50s, and they also showed him with an unnamed woman – as well as an image that Ponomarenko claimed showed a UFO.

The bizarre story took another turn when authorities looked back into the records and found a man by the same name who went missing in 1958. Strangely, they tracked down the man’s girlfriend who by that time was in her 70s. It turns out that the girlfriend was the woman in the photographs.

She then told authorities that Ponomarenko had disappeared for two years and then reappeared in the 50s. Not only that, but she then received a photograph showing him as an older man, with the picture purporting to have been taken in Kyiv in 2050.

syboulette traveller set

It’s all kinds of weird, but the mystery might finally have been solved all these years later.

YouTuber Joe Scott has delved back into the case, and come up with an explanation that might put the whole incident to bed.

As Joe finds, the picture of Ponomarenko purportedly from 2050 Kyiv has been “cloned” and possibly includes the Empire State Building.

More compellingly, Joe also found that the photos were taken from the Ukrainian TV show Aliens . The show discusses the possibility of extraterrestrial life and is similar to the type of show you would see on The History Channel but according to Scott has a number of inaccuracies.

It was fun while it lasted, but it looks like the ‘time traveller’ has been busted.

TSA sets new single-day record with more than 3 million travelers at airport security

The previous 2.99M record was set just last month.

The high volume of travelers in the United States passing through airport security after their Fourth of July getaways helped set a new single-day screening record for the Transportation Security Administration.

On Sunday, July 7, TSA officers screened 3,013,413 people at checkpoints nationwide, which surpassed the previous record of 2.99 million set on June 23, 2024, the agency announced Monday.

More people flew on an airplane in a single day in the U.S. on Sunday than on any other day in history since TSA was founded in November 2001.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas hailed the agency's work as "an extraordinary achievement" in a congratulatory message on Monday.

syboulette traveller set

"TSA fully, unerringly, and efficiently checked 35 passengers every second, along with all their luggage and carry-on baggage, while demonstrating unwavering professionalism and respect for travelers during the intensely busy holiday weekend," he said. "Congratulations to the entire TSA workforce and Administrator David Pekoske."

As air travel continues to skyrocket at "record-breaking" rates, which Mayorkas said is "expected to continue in the months ahead," he urged lawmakers to consider the compensation of its agents.

"... It is imperative that Congress ensure pay fairness for TSA permanently," he said. "It is the smart thing to do for everyone who depends on TSA to keep our skies and our country safe, and it is the right thing to do for these great public servants."

Things To Do

Travel | pack your bags and set your intentions: an easy flight to tulum, mexico, will take you on a self-care journey like no other.

Tulum's picturesque, pristine beaches attract visitors from around the world. (The Beach Tulum)

When I found myself googling “symptoms of burnout” more often than “funny cat videos,” I decided it was time for a wellness retreat. And now it’s easier than ever to visit one of the most spectacular wellness-focused destinations in the world: Tulum, Mexico, known for its seaside boutique hotels, lush flora, turquoise waters and boho beach town vibe.

In a little under four hours, I was in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. I traveled solo on United Airlines’ new, daily nonstop flight from O’Hare International Airport to Tulum’s recently inaugurated Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport.

Nestled within the verdant jungle about 90 miles south of Cancun, the aptly named “aeropuerto en la selva,” or airport in the jungle, streamlines access to the Riviera Maya region. The celebrated tourism hot spot extends along the eastern coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula, bridging Playa del Carmen and Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico’s southeastern state.

Tulum’s new airport, constructed with eco-friendly materials and a design that mirrors the peninsula’s biodiversity, boasts energy-efficient lighting and water conservation systems, underscoring the region’s commitment to sustainability.

While navigating through O’Hare can feel like a real-life game of “Frogger,” where you’re dodging a frenzy of luggage carts and harried travelers, Tulum’s state-of-the-art airport, with its single terminal, is much more serene and a mere 40-minute ride to the sandy shores of the beach town.

As we glided down the airport access road, slicing through the dense Yucatan jungle to join Quintana Roo’s coastal Highway 307, my eyes were drawn to the numerous “Beware of Jaguar” signs along the way.

I asked my taxi driver, “Have any jaguars ever crossed your path here?”

“Three!” he answered. “They’re so majestic, so awe-inspiring.”

The population of jaguars in Mexico has been increasing, which is a promising sign that national conservation strategies are working. From 2010 to 2018, the jaguar population in Mexico grew by about 800, marking a 20% increase to an estimated 4,800 jaguars, due to various efforts, such as preserving wildlife corridors and sanctuaries and resolving conflicts with local livestock owners.

Wellness is a way of life

Tulum is a serene alternative to party hub Cancun, which is about a two-hour drive up the coast.

In addition to its spa, The Beach Tulum offers complimentary morning and evening yoga classes. (The Beach Tulum)

It wasn’t until the 21st century that Tulum began to be recognized as a tourist destination. In 1960, the town’s population stood at a little over 90 people. By 2000, that number skyrocketed to 12,000 as Tulum’s picturesque, pristine beaches began attracting visitors from around the world.

In Tulum, wellness is not just an activity; it’s a way of life. At my resort, The Beach Tulum, an idyllic 28-room, adults-only boutique hotel, it was easy to focus on self-care.

Every morning, I flung open my veranda doors to sea views and took a dip in my private plunge pool before enjoying a leisurely breakfast in my bikini, toes in the sand, at Fresco’s , a casual cafe just beyond the beach. My morning go-to was a smoothie bowl, a thicker, vitamin-packed version of a traditional smoothie featuring a variety of tropical fruits and topped with nuts, seeds, and granola, found on menus across town.

When I wasn’t napping in the hammock on my veranda or reading a book poolside, I was diving into the sea or walking barefoot along the powdery, white sand beach.

Tulum's laid-back vibe features a powdery, white sand beach. (The Beach Tulum)

Tulum’s laid-back, beachy vibe creates the perfect backdrop for yoga practice. Most of the boutique hotels here offer complimentary daily yoga classes. Perhaps best of all, the many yoga studios are designed to integrate with the natural surroundings.

At The Beach Tulum, complimentary morning and evening yoga classes are held in a dreamy, treetop palapa, or shelter. It was blissful to ease into Savasana meditation after an intense yoga practice, accompanied by the swaying of palm trees and the chorus of tropical birds.

Embracing Mayan traditions

Tulum was a significant Mayan center of trade and religious activity from the 11th to the 16th centuries. At the Tulum Archaeological Site, also known as the Tulum ruins, the remnants of the pre-Columbian walled city built by the Mayans around 564 A.D. are perched on a 12-meter tall cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

El Castillo, the tallest building, may have served as a navigational aid for Mayan seafarers. Bring your swimsuit, as the site also features a beautiful beach, Playa Ruinas, where visitors can swim in the shadow of the ancient city.

Originally known as Zamá, meaning “place of the rising sun” in the Yucatec Maya language spoken by the people of the Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum is home to a range of spas. Each offers unique experiences that blend traditional Mayan practices and local ingredients with modern wellness techniques, emphasizing beauty, but also the nourishment of the spirit.

The spa at The Beach Tulum. (The Beach Tulum)

At the Mayan Clay Spa , indulgent detoxifying massage treatments and deep tissue healing techniques use locally sourced clay known for its purifying properties.

Leaf Luxury Spa ‘s Hydrothermal Circuit Experience uses water sourced from the naturally occurring cenotes, freshwater pools sacred to the Mayan culture, “to harmonize your body, soul and spirit.” It features a variety of water-based therapies, including an aromatherapy shower, a eucalyptus-scented steam room and a refreshing cold plunge.

At the Naj Naay Spa and Healing Center, I indulged in the Mayan Reawakening experience, which began with a cleaning of my “auric field,” the energy that surrounds my physical body, with sacred copal incense, followed by a massage with an infusion of rose petals, medicinal herbs and mezcal. Considered the “blood of trees,” copal is a tree resin once used by the Aztecs and Mayans in ritual ceremonies. I left the spa with a heightened sense of harmony and balance between body and mind; and although I typically struggle with sleep, I slept like a baby for the entirety of my vacation.

Where to stay

Speaking of sleeping, the tranquil and romantic The Beach Tulum is an adults-only, beachfront luxury resort. The spacious rooms feature a private pool or rooftop hot tub plus a hammock on the veranda, perfect for an afternoon nap.

Beachfront Nômade Tulum , named in Sanskrit after the calm, turquoise sea, is considered one of Tulum’s most iconic, eco-chic boutique hotels.

Eco-chic Amansala offers a six-day Refresh and Renew retreat with guided yoga and meditation lessons and classes.

Mystic depths

More than 400 cenotes are scattered across the Yucatan Peninsula. These natural sinkholes formed when limestone bedrock collapsed, exposing crystal-clear groundwater beneath. The ancient Mayans held cenotes in high esteem, not only as vital water sources but also as sacred sites for making sacrificial offerings. Some cenotes boast underwater visibility extending beyond 300 feet, making them a haven for divers and snorkelers.

Tak Be Luum is one of more than 400 cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula. (Daniel Alcaraz)

Two cenotes stand out for their popularity. El Gran Cenote is a short distance from Tulum, where you can swim, dive or snorkel and marvel at the massive stalactites up close. Dos Ojos, which translates to “two eyes cenote,” aptly describes the two neighboring sinkholes connected by a 400-meter-long corridor boardwalk. With crystal-clear waters offering visibility up to 300 feet, snorkeling Dos Ojos, which is part of one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems, is an unforgettable adventure.

When exploring cenotes, it’s best to opt for a guided tour, especially if you wish to explore the deeper parts of the cavern.

I hired a private guide through Living Dreams Mexico , which offers private excursions and adventures in the Riviera Maya. My guide, Daniel, picked me up from my hotel and drove me to one of the quieter cenotes near Dos Ojos.

A sense of tranquility enveloped me as I glided through the cool waters of the cenote. Surprisingly, the presence of thousands of bats flitting above did nothing to disturb my peace; instead, I chose to embrace the mystique.

Over the course of 1½ hours, I gently swam through three caverns, each with its own unique aura. The stillness of the underwater world, the ancient rock formations and the gentle play of light through the water connected me to nature’s timeless beauty, leaving me with a profound sense of serenity. It was the ultimate gift from magical Tulum.
