What we say...
The fifth version of the srixon q-star tour is going to be one of the best balls of 2024 for club golfers, offering tour-level performance for moderate swing speed players..
As Srixon’s softest tour-level performance ball, the new new Q-Star Tour features a reformulated FastLayer Core, a softer urethane cover and Spin Skin tech to give moderate swing speed players more distance and control, likely making it one of the best balls of 2024 .
The Q-Star Tour shares lots of technology with Srixon’s Z-Star line – up , which is played on tour by the likes of Brooks Koepka , Shane Lowry and Hideki Matsuyama.
But while that ball targets Tour players and faster swingers, the Q-Star Tour is very much a Tour-quality ball aimed at the club golfer, and the old version compared very well in our robot golf balls test last summer . How is that possible?
Tour ball performance
Srixon say that Tour performance starts around the greens, which is why the updated ball uses a 0.5mm premium urethane cover that’s coated in Slide Ring Material (SeRM).
Srixon’s Spin Skin with SeRM coating increases friction and bite for more spin and control when attacking flags.
Creating a faster golf ball while still maintaining great feel begins with the Q-Star Tour’s new FastLayer Core. This generation’s reformulated core has a slightly higher compression rating than its predecessor.
The new FastLayer Core sees a gradual transition from soft inner core to firm outer edge and behaves like a core with thousands of layers, helping to deliver distance and softer feel.
Softer core
It is Srixon’s softest core that still delivers Tour-grade performance, while also dramatically reducing long game sidespin to help your tee shots fly straighter.
You’ll also find 338 dimples on every Q-Star Tour ball, a pattern used in the Z-Star balls and designed to deliver less drag and more lift for a long and true flight, even in strong winds
Around the greens, the Q-Star Tour packs superb spin and control thanks to its ultra-thin, premium urethane cover, which is now even softer than the previous generation.
The Q-Star Tour is available in new Pure White and Tour Yellow colourways.
It is also available as a DIVIDE model with a 50-50 coloured urethane cover – read our verdict on that here.
Srixon Q-Star TOUR: Key Technology
Fastlayer core.
The reformulated FastLayer Core offers distance and soft feel without compromise due to a gradual transition from soft inner core to firm outer edge.
Spin Skin with SeRM
Srixon’s popular urethane coating with flexible molecular bonds digs deep into wedge and iron grooves for increased friction and maximum spin.
New Alignment Aid
New longer side stamp helps align those critical putts.
338 Speed Dimple Pattern
Providing a penetrating ball flight in all conditions, the optimal dimple design increases lift and reduces drag to maximize distance.
What Srixon say about the new Q-Star Tour Golf Ball
“The new Q-STAR TOUR is a high-calibre option for players wanting to hit the ball farther, see more spin around the greens, and have more control across the course,” said Joe Miller, European Product Manager, Srixon Sports Europe.
“Players can work the ball tee to green with confidence and with an updated FastLayer Core, they can generate more ball speeds and distance without compromising feel.”
What we say…
We’re big fans of the Q-Star Tour here at Today’s Golfer and find it to be a genuinely excellent alternative to premium tour balls that cost a lot more.
The Q-Star Tour is marginally cheaper than a Titleist Pro V1 but without any significant loss of performance. The softer compression means you’ll give up a little driver distance over a premium ball, but you’ll gain that back in iron distance.
And while data will show it spins significantly less than a Pro V1, it actually launches and flies higher, dropping at a steeper angle, so will still stop quickly on the greens.
For us, the Q-Star Tour joins the Callaway’s new Chrome Soft , TaylorMade’s Tour Response or Wilson’s Triad in being a superb golf ball option for club golfers who have a “normal” swing speed and don’t have money to burn.

Srixon Q-Star Tour golf balls: What you need to know
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Srixon’s fourth generation of its Q-Star Tour has a reformulated mantle layer to produce a softer feel while generating more spin around the greens. A flexible coating of urethane on top of the urethane cover improves the cover’s engagement with the grooves of irons and wedges for additional grab.
AVAILABILITY/PRICING: The new Srixon Q-Star Tour will be available Jan. 26 at $35 per dozen in both white and optic yellow.
THE DEEP DIVE: Making a ball with tour-like ball attributes but specifically designed for those with non-tour-like swing speeds is a pretty big ask. As such, when you find that elusive formula, it’s difficult to stray too far from it, which is why, although the 2020 version of Srixon’s Q-Star Tour was a major shift in that ball’s construction, its 2022 follow-up delivers improvements of a more incremental nature than a golf-ball design overhaul.
The fourth generation of the Q-Star Tour retains the multilayer, urethane-cover design of its predecessor. The “FastLayer” core starts out soft in the center and then gradually increases in firmness as you move to the core’s outer edges, in effect acting like hundreds and hundreds of separate layers. That produces a benefit for moderate swing speed players off the tee and with other full swing shots because the low compression core helps launch shots higher and with less spin, compared to most multilayer urethane-covered balls that are typically played on the pro tours.
The mid or mantle layer has been changed to be noticeably softer. This not only produces a soft feel but helps provide more greenside spin on those short pitches and chips.
MORE: Why selling golf clubs was both easy and painstakingly difficult in 2021
The cover utilizes the same 338 dimple pattern and features an extra, more flexible coating of urethane on top of the urethane cover to improve the cover’s engagement with the grooves of irons and wedges for increased spin—a technology the company refers to as SeRM which stands for “Slide-Ring Material.” The dimples are designed in a manner to reduce drag and enhance lift—an aerodynamically preferable condition. The lower drag allows the ball to move through the air with less resistance, making it less susceptible to the wind. The higher lift allows the ball to stay in the air longer, helping boost distance.
Although the side stamping on the previous version was designed to help those who use it as an alignment aid when putting, the stamp on the new Q-Star Tour is even longer to provide more assistance.
The new Srixon Q-Star Tour will be available Jan. 26 at $35 per dozen in both white and optic yellow.

Srixon Q-Star Tour 2022 Golf Ball Review
In this Srixon Q-Star Tour 2022 golf ball review, we see what this mid-priced urethane-covered model has to offer
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
With a short game feel and control to rival many premium models, the Srixon Q-Star Tour is a hugely impressive performer in the increasingly competitive mid-priced urethane-covered golf ball category.
Impressive short game spin
High launch, low spin long game performance delivers good height and distance
Soft feel off the putter
Minimal price difference with Srixon’s tour level balls
Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .
Over the last few years, we have seen an interesting trend in the golf ball market towards more affordable, urethane-covered models aimed at regular golfers. The Q-Star Tour is Srixon’s offering in this department and it comes in with a recommended retail price of $34.99 (£34.99) per dozen.
We wanted to see whether this was one of the best mid price golf balls on the market so we tested it on a launch SkyTrak monitor, comparing the performance to a similar 3-piece design in the Wilson Triad, and out on the golf course.
The first thing to talk about here is the short game spin. Any golfer investing in a urethane ball - whether it is one of the best golf balls used on Tour like the Srixon Z Star or not - will want high levels of control as they pitch and chip. Make no mistake, the Srixon Q-Star Tour is a hugely impressive performer in this department. In our testing, it delivered an average of 5141rpm of spin on a 50 yard pitch. This is up there with what we’d expect from a more expensive Tour-played ball. It also launched and flew fairly high (30˚ and 8 yards respectively) offering superb stopping power.
The Q-Star Tour also excelled as we pitched from 100 yards. It offered over 1000rpm more spin than the Wilson Triad , although the latter did launch a little higher and offered a peak height of 2 yards more.
When you combine this short game spin performance with the soft feel - something we really noticed out on the course, especially off the putter face - it is clear the Srixon Q-Star Tour delivers excellent control in and around the greens. So, that begs the question, how does it perform in the long game?
Well, Srixon has introduced its’ FasterLayer Core here that has a gentle transition from soft inner core towards a firmer outer edge. As our swing speed increased as we hit 7-irons and drivers, so the spin dropped. With a 7-iron (and a relatively high) clubhead speed of 116mph, the spin dropped to 4133. It is worth saying that this is fairly low for a mid-iron but as the ball was launching at 22˚, it offered the sort of peak height we would expect to see.
Likewise, with the driver the Q-Star Tour delivered low spin (2061) and high launch (14.6). It is worth saying the Wilson Triad launched a little lower (12.6˚) and spun a little more (2305) so the overall flight was very similar, as were the total distance numbers.
If you are a relatively slow swinger, these low spin rates might create a lower flight than you are expecting - so it could be something to keep an eye on. Having said that, Srixon says the Q-Star Tour 2022 is “calibrated to fit moderate swing speed players that seek the distance and spin of a tour-calibre ball”.
All in all, the new generation Srixon Q-Star Tour delivers plenty of bang for its buck. If you don’t want to stretch your wallet to the premium price of a Tour ball, this offers the sort of control that could really help your scoring potential.

Srixon 2022 Q-Star Golf Ball Review
More in golf balls:.
50 Words or Less
The Srixon 2022 Q-Star golf ball provides low spin for distance plus mid-high spin for wedge control. Soft, premium feel. Great value.
Introduction
If the historic Masters win by Hideki Matsuyama wasn’t enough to elevate Srixon to a golf household name, the recent signing of Brooks Koepka certainly was. And while PGA and LPGA tour staffers are great for brands, in the golf ball space, Srixon has never lost sight of the fact that most golfers aren’t tour caliber. Their needs – and wallets – are different. The sixth generation Srixon Q-Star is designed for golfers who appreciate a balance of performance and price.
Similar to previous versions, the 2022 Srixon Q-Star is a two-piece golf ball that doesn’t feel like your typical two-piece ball. Most of us associate two-piece ionomer or surlyn golf balls with rock hard range balls, but the Q-Star has a much softer, premium feel .
Off the putter it would be easy to mistake the Q-Star as a multi-layer tour ball. I had to really focus to pick up the minute differences in sound and feel while testing head-to-head against a ProV1.
With an iron or driver, the feel is more distinguishable and comparisons will depend with what you are used to playing. For me the feel occupies a nice lane between firm and mushy. I realize those last two terms aren’t very scientific, but we’ve all hit enough of those random balls found in the woods to have a pretty good relatable scale. For me, the ProV1 has a more satisfying feel, but it’s a marginal difference – unlike the price delta.
From the green surrounds to 50 yards out, the Srixon Q-Star exhibited a good amount of spin . Compared to a tour ball, runout was in the neighborhood of 25% more. Noteworthy was the consistency across a variety of shots at various distances. I had great trust in my short game once I became attuned to the performance of the Q-Star. Even though the polymer chemistry differs between the ionomer cover of the Q-Star and the urethane cover of the Z-Star balls, both employ Srixon’s Spin Skin with SeRM coating to maximize spin. Most two-piece balls can only dream of that type of molecular network.
On the launch monitor while hitting driver, I saw consistently good ball speeds and spin around 2000 rpm. That low spin kept my ball flight in the mid-range and made my slight draw a little straighter. The combination of ball speed and trajectory provided a solid 30 yards of roll out.
The low spin theme continued in my Srixon ZX-5 [full review HERE ] mid-irons. I averaged around 4800 rpm with the 7-iron. Ball speed was good, but didn’t stand out. It is worth noting that Srixon lowered the compression from 77 to 72 with the 2022 Q-Star “for superior flight on low-lofted clubs.”
While hitting indoors is great for capturing data, the Q-Star deserves to be tried au naturel. Correction – outdoors in the natural environment. Off the tee box and from the fairway on a blustery day, the Q-Star bored through the wind and helped keep my scores in check. Srixon attributes strong performance in windy conditions to less drag from the 338 Speed Dimple Pattern incorporated on the 2022 Q-Star balls.
Besides the really cool lid on the box of 2022 Q-Star golf balls, I really like that my testing results aligned with the performance parameters listed on the back. As Srixon states on the box, the Q-Star delivers “balanced performance for golfers who demand exceptional distance, feel and greenside control from a 2-piece ball.” Considering the $27.99 a dozen price, I totally agree with the Srixon website: “Get tour technology at a great value.”

And how was the spin/rollout on full iron shots into the greens❓⛳️
Good for the category Jim. You should expect some run out with the low spin design.

Great review. Any qualitative views on this vs the Bridgestone e12 contact? This ball is a few bucks less and seems to offer similar features.
Sorry Francis, but I don’t have any experience with the e12.
What is your swing speed and did you compare the Q-star to the Z-star? Would one be better for a slower swing speed? Say 85-90 mph.
My driver swing speed is around 85 mph Steve. I did not compare directly with the Z-Star. They are two different types of balls, and it really depends on what you want out of a golf ball. Your swing speed is solid and suitable for either ball. Try them both and let us know your thoughts.
Any comparison with the Q Star Tour ?
I haven’t hit the new Q-Star Tour George. Here’s the 2020 review if interested: https://pluggedingolf.com/2020-srixon-q-star-tour-golf-ball-review/
Nice review. I use the Q Star Tour and don’t see myself dumping Srixon anytime soon.
I would like to find a two piece ball that has a urethane cover .
Matt, I love the feel and value of Titleist Velocity balls but once summer comes & greens firm up, they don’t hold a green. How do the Srixon Q series stack up overall & especially for hold? I am looking for a ball that stacks up comparably to Velocity. Thoughts? Thank You!
I don’t have any experience with the Velocity Dave.
New q star tour vs q star: I experienced much more spin with q star tour. I am a 5 handicap and it was too much spin for me as too much spin equated to a loss of distance. The feel is too soft. Prefer the regular q star.
For a senior golfer with a 12 handicap. how does the Q star compare to the Z star? Thanks
The golf ball doesn’t know your age or handicap Don, nor would that affect any recommendations. The key is evaluating the balls based on your needs/desires such as spin, flight, durability, and cost. Personally, I always prefer a tour level ball like the Z – they cost more for a reason.
Last year I started my personal quest for the best ball for my game. Which seems odd considering I’m 70 years old, been playing since I was 22 and only recently decided it was time to pick my perfect golf ball. “Some people seem a little slower than others.” But to be honest, with over 1200 creek balls in my garage the thought of paying for golf balls has always seemed foreign to me. Yet I found myself buying one dozen of the newest versions of each of these balls.
Last year I gave the “New” Kirkland a try as well as a variety of Maxfli’s, the Wilson Zip and the Titleist Velocity. So far this year I’ve tried the Titleist Trufeel, Calloway Super Soft and the Wilson Elite 50’s. Until I read your review I thought I was finished but now it appears I have one more dozen to buy. lol
Thanks for the review, it was both well written and helpful. Wes

I tried it: These golf balls offer performance, value and fun
I t can be difficult to find a golf ball to fit your game - Do you want a ball that offers tour-level performance no matter the price, or are you looking for something that offers more value while still offering a performance urethane cover and soft feel around the greens?
Well if you’re looking for a best-of-both-worlds scenario, the Q-Star Tour Divide from Srixon could be the ball you’ve been searching for. It offers a three-piece urethane construction and many of the technologies of Srixon’s more premium Z-Star golf balls, and it’s only $39.99 a dozen.
Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide 2 Golf Balls
With the golf season finally kicking off in full force in the North East I needed some golf balls for my first few rounds of the season, and being a golfer who likes to try new things for my own game and help others find value in theirs, I decided to give the Q-Star Tour Divide a shot.
It should almost go without saying but the standout feature of the Divide golf balls from Srixon is their high-contrast two-tone covers that make them easy to spot and helpful to line up when on the tee, or putting.
As a golfer who tends to struggle with alignment off the tee, I created an easy visual by placing the contrasting colors perpendicular to my target any chance I could get. This helped me quickly align my clubface with the ball and inspired extra confidence. It also works great for any golfer who likes to use a long line on their ball when putting - because what’s better than a continuous high-contrast straight line around the equator of your golf ball?
Off the tee, and with my irons the Q-Star Tour felt responsive without ever feeling too soft or clicky, and I would be willing to chalk that up to the slightly lower compression (74) than what is found in Srixon’s Z-Star XV which sits at just over 100.
But he’s where the golf ball shines - especially for the price.
Around the greens.
Thanks to a softer urethane cover than the previous generation and Spin Skin SeRM polymer (Slide-Ring-Material) the Q-Star Tour Divide spins as close to any premium ball around the greens that I have used, and quickly drops and stops on full approach shots too.
Srixon Q-Star Tour 5 Golf Balls
The Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide golf balls come in a variety of color options including blue/yellow, orange/yellow, and red/yellow. For those who might not be ready for the Srixon Divide look but want Q-Star Tour performance, it also comes in a more classic gloss white and yellow.
