Portugal soccer tours, about our soccer trips to portugal.

Portugal is the perfect destination for college men’s and women’s teams. Portugal is a more mature location, and we would recommend Italy or Spain for younger teams looking for sun, sand, and soccer. We use Lisbon and Porto as bases to explore all Portugal has to offer, as these two cities offer the best local teams for your games as well as great history to explore. Portugal has a great combination of soccer, sightseeing, beaches and nightlife that appeals to the talents and interests for many college teams.

“My team’s spring break trip to Portugal was amazing. It was a first-class operation as soon as we got off the plane in Lisbon. Everything was well coordinated with hotels and meals, bus transportation, and sightseeing with Filipe, our full-time tour guide. There were so many great things to do in close proximity to each other, plus the quality of women’s soccer over there was very good. My girls thoroughly enjoyed the training and gained valuable experience playing against three very talented clubs.” – JP Sousa, Head Coach, Catholic University Women’s Soccer

“This trip was so great. On the coaching end, we progressed everyday as a team. The competition allowed them to see where they need to be individually and where the USA needs to be at the youth level. I honestly feel the major part of our progression was the players actually seeing the difference of play.” – Megan Schmidt, Coach, MSYSA

Flag-Portugal

Portugal and Spain make up the Iberian Peninsula and therefore, many aspects of Portuguese culture are similar to that of their neighbor’s. Portugal boasts a beautiful coastline and beaches, as well as fantastic cities like Porto and Lisbon, which feels like a European version of San Francisco.

Sea Kayaking in the Benagil Caves

Many people visit the famous Benagil Caves in the Algarve on a boat tour, but this exciting tour takes you inside these natural formations by kayak. Set off from Benagil Beach for the cave system adventure. Once you reach the grotto, you can step out of your kayak and take lots of pictures of the natural skylight, something you can’t do on a boat tour.

Lisbon, Portugal twilight cityscape at the Alfama District.

Wander Around Alfama

One of the most characteristic districts in Portugal, Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood with breathtaking views, unique shops, and home to Fado, the traditional Portuguese music.

castelo-dos-mouros

Castelo dos Mouros

The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

riberia

Cais da Ribeira

Ribeira is one of the most popular neighbourhoods in Porto. It is one of the most authentic and picturesque parts of the city in the heart of the old town. As its name suggests, the district is situated on the riverbank (Ribeira in Portuguese stems from the word river).

We are committed to taking the hassle, stress, and wasted expenses out of travel and to fill it with fun, adventure, relaxation and peace of mind. Hear what our players, families, and coaches are saying about their Navigo Sports Tours experience.

For our trip to Cuba, we could not have asked for a better experience. Working with Nate Marchand and Brad Hosey was very easy and reassuring that we were in good hands. We told them certain activities that we wanted to do on our trip and they made it happen! They took control of the challenging parts of figuring out the logistics and specifics of our trip for a large group of people and made it very easy and memorable for us!

Kelsey susalla, michigan softball took its first-ever international trip to cuba the fantastic staff of nate marchand and brad hosey were well prepared, and attended to all the details. our team had a wonderful experience and most importantly got to experience the incredible culture of the cuban people. i would call upon brad and nate again in the future, carol hutchins, our nine day trip was part cultural, part baseball and finally, a little down time that was needed by all. action packed,  exciting and rewarding are just a couple words that come to mind when thinking about our experience. “first class” is what comes to mind when describing the planning and execution done by the guys from navigo. if you’re even remotely thinking of going abroad and you haven’t called brad or mike from navigo, you’ve already made your first mistake already looking forward to our next trip, in many ways, a trip like this is a leap of faith and navigo soccer tours exceeded all of my expectations in every aspect. from the 18 months of planning, plane reservations, last-minute cancellations and last-minute additions, your determination to adjust air reservations and flights, the meticulous planning on your end of every day and every event, meals, transportation, everything was top notch. the experience & memories of our trip will forever be part of us and your efforts to assure they are fond memories are very much appreciated. i very much look forward to discussions regarding the summer tour of spain and portugal. we’ve got to get busy again planning, only 24 months before we are off again, navigo soccer tours provided us with a completely customized tour of costa rica. we had the luxury of 24-hour assistance from our tour guides and bus driver. they were extremely knowledgeable about the culture and were flexible when unforeseen obstacles appeared my players had the experience of a lifetime, both exploring a new country and bonding as a team. i highly recommend navigo soccer tours for your next trip abroad. you will not be disappointed, lauren salerno, we spent years planning our trip of a lifetime to ireland and mike and the staff at navigo sports tours more than made that happen. i was amazed by their local knowledge and organization. when we go on our next trip, we will, without a doubt, use navigo soccer tours, daniel hogan, our team had an amazing time and life-changing experience on our trip to cuba we can’t wait to travel again and will definitely be contacting marcos to help us organize our next trip. the level of customer service and care was above and beyond what we expected from start to finish. marcos was incredibly helpful and flexible in the pre-trip process, and all of the staff that traveled with us made our trip special. thank you, steven steele, our experience with navigo sports tours was perfecto. when planning an intercollegiate athletic team’s trip abroad for 40 student-athletes, coaches and family, members it is difficult to know who to trust. having the assurance of a quality experience was important to us. navigo sports tours delivered far more than we expected to receive right from our first moments of arriving in spain. the sales team did a wonderful job of working with us on a desired itinerary and finding a price that fit our budget. their operations team was very thorough in the process of ticketing, communications with our entire group prior to our departure, local ground transportation locally and meals and lodging. our trip leaders were experienced, hard working, flexible and personable., john shackelford, our team had a great time exploring and enjoying all of what costa rica had to offer. the staff and people we worked with on our trip were very informative and did everything they could to make sure our experience was a great one. the trip was filled with various activities for us, which helped the group better understand the culture and take in all of costa rica. the schedule throughout the week was well balanced with activities and downtime for the group to relax and enjoy. i plan to take another trip with this group and would highly recommend them to others looking to take their team somewhere., matt correia, i have had the opportunity to work with navigo’s staff on two foreign trips. as a professional in sports operations, i found their work and attention to detail to be outstanding. they understand how college teams operate and are well trained and connected throughout all parts of the world, allowing them the ability to create a specialized tour for any type of team/group. navigo are the only people i’d go to for future foreign tours  , michael palmer, our long-term partnership with navigo has helped us transform our program from a bottom-half conference team to a top 25 national competitor. fostering opportunities for your team to have international experiences and gain cultural competency is worth every penny. traveling as a team not only opens up educational and interactive moments for your group, but it also enables the team to build new relationships and deepen existing ones. nothing creates a coherent feeling like shared experience and navigo facilitates the prime stage for this endeavor. through carefully curated meals, tours and competition, our itinerary was both dynamic and engaging. when you book navigo, you realize the most powerful recruiting tool—highlight appealing offerings to prospective student-athletes and their parents alike., andrew gamarra, this was our first international trip with navigo, and i would highly recommend them to any coach looking to take their team abroad. the predeparture staff was only outdone by the in country guides we met when we landed in europe.  navigo took all of the headache out of planning a 10 day trip for 30 people to 3 european countries.  our players and staff were able to focus on our goals of cultural exploration, international cooperation, growing the game abroad, and team bonding while navigo took care of the details.  the team was easy to work with to make adjustments to the schedule making sure that we got exactly what we wanted out of our trip.  we are looking forward to working with navigo on our next trip in 4 years, mk geratowski, our softball team traveled to italy and we can say everything about the trip exceeded our expectations. we traveled with students and families and our goal for the trip was a combination of competition and culture and navigo was excellent working with us and in handling all the details of both of those goals. our international softball hosts were so welcoming. our student-athletes had an experience they will never forget. the cultural aspects of the trip were also excellent. our experiences everyplace we traveled were engaging, exciting, and surprising—from exploring all the sights of rome, to a trip on the fast train to milan, to a bike tour in milan, to a trip to lake garda (and a beautiful town the whole group was charmed by), to a gondola ride in venice—just to name a few. navigo handled all the details of travel, competition, meals, hotels, and tours. michael and nadina, our tour guides, were so knowledgeable, patient, calm, and accommodating. when the details of the trip are handled so smoothly and communicated so well, the whole group can enjoy the planned activities and the free time without much stress. this was our second international trip with navigo. for both, navigo worked with us to develop the trips and activities that best suited the teams’ needs. we hope for more international experiences and highly recommend navigo., joanne merrill, our program’s trip to the netherlands and belgium was a career highlight for me as a coach. our team, staff, and family members all had an incredible time experiencing local history and culture and playing competitive volleyball matches. i was really impressed with how easy it was to work with navigo in the planning phase as well as on the actual trip. their flexibility in creating an itinerary that worked for our group and intentionality in making connections and meeting needs while on the ground were highlights for us. we plan to travel again and will use navigo again in the future., i cannot express enough gratitude to the incredible team at navigo sports tours for planning an unforgettable international tour for our collegiate athletics team. from the moment we reached out to them with our ambitious vision, they took charge with utmost professionalism and expertise. the planning process was seamless, and they took the time to understand our team’s specific needs and preferences. they curated a well-rounded itinerary that combined competitive sports events with cultural experiences, making the trip educational and fun for our student-athletes. throughout our journey, the level of organization and attention to detail was impeccable. travel logistics, accommodations, and transportation were all managed flawlessly, allowing us to focus solely on our training and competitions. their local contacts and guides at each destination were incredibly knowledgeable, providing us with valuable insights into the local culture and history. one of the highlights of the tour was a friendly match against a local team, which gave our athletes a unique opportunity to interact with international players and exchange skills and experiences. the exposure to different playing styles broadened our team’s perspective and improved their performance. thanks to the efforts of navigo sports tours and john, our athletes came back not only as better players but also as more culturally aware individuals. the memories created during this trip will stay with us forever, and we are immensely grateful to the whole team for making it all possible. if you are considering an international tour for your collegiate athletics team, i highly recommend navigo sports tours. they will go above and beyond to create an exceptional and enriching experience for your athletes, leaving a lasting impact on your team’s development., this was our first experience with navigo and the experience was simply fantastic. john (czifrik) and the navigo team set up an amazing trip for us into switzerland and france this past august (2023). they were attentive and responsive during the organization process, and continued to check-in following our return. the level of hockey and atmospheres for our competitions were amazing and the places we visited (geneva, chamonix, gap, antibes, nice, monaco) were incredible. our tour directors, lucy & javi, were top-notch and did an exceptional job adjusting on the fly when we experienced inclement weather. with minimal travel experience within our group, they managed to provide us with a nice balance of comfortable accommodations, and genuine local cultural experiences. everything ran incredibly smoothly whether we were on the tour bus, or traveling via public transport. we set out to provide our student-athletes an opportunity to play some hockey while experiencing some unfamiliar cultures and we could not be more pleased with how this trip went. thank you, john, lucy, javi & the navigo team, rob hutchison, the trip exceeded expectations. the price was fair and our hosts (tour guides) were fantastic. there was a great balance between our training goals and the goals of seeing some of the amazing history of italy. to see the history of rome and pompeii along with seeing the beauty of the amalfi coast was unbelievable. as a team we grew so much closer because of having to rely on each other to navigate a foreign transit system and ways of communicating. we will go abroad again when we can., dean brownley, we had a great experience with navigo. not only did they do a great job accommodating our large group (80+ travel party), they were extremely flexible and easy to work with throughout the planning process. they even made adjustments for us “on the fly” during the trip. even with changes in leadership, both on our team and in our athletic department, john and michael went above and beyond to ensure the trip would continue without any hiccups. they were professional, flexible, and great communicators throughout the planning process – making the trip preparation easy for players and coaches. the actual trip itself was incredible. we had a full itinerary including guided tours, games, team lunches/dinners, and some downtime to explore both florence and rome on our own schedule. a few highlights for me included a team cooking class, a guided bike tour through florence, the trip to the colosseum, and the food throughout the entire trip overall a wonderful, very memorable experience that i would highly recommend, matthew johnson, we had a wonderful trip to italy, it was everything i could have hoped for when planning it. navigo was professional and helpful from start to finish. they were always available when i had questions before we left on the trip, then once we arrived in italy their tour directors did everything possible to make it a fantastic experience. the clubs we trained at were nice and the tennis competition was the perfect level for our team. each day was a great mix of site seeing and free time to explore on our own. i also highly recommend the bike tour in naples. we certainly plan to use navigo for our future team trips., our team traveled to puerto rico for an amazing cultural and baseball experience. the navigo team led by john was incredible in their planning. they were able to connect us with local teams, set up educational opportunities and give us time to relax and explore the island. the tour directors were flexible, worked well with our players and really made the trip. from playing baseball, hiking el yunque, learning about local history, sharing meals with other teams and families and even getting some time at the beach there is not much else you can get out of a spring break trip. it was a tremendous bonding experience for our team and without a doubt a first-class trip., jason sport, connect with us.

Praia Poca Estoril

Estoril is a stylish and sophisticated resort town, situated on the beautiful Costa do Estoril coastline. The town strikes the perfect balance between Portuguese charm and outstanding tourist facilities, to create the ideal destination, if you want more than just great beaches for your holiday.

Estoril is at the heart of the Portuguese Riviera, a region infamous for 20th century exiled kings and spying during WWII. These secret and underhand negotiations were played out in the grand casino, while the prominence of Europe’s ousted royalty, gave Estoril an air of prestige and refinement. This reputation for exclusivity continues through to today; found in Estoril are fine dining restaurants, world-class golf courses and the largest casino of the Iberian Peninsula.

Sightseeing

Lisbon, the Capital of Portugal

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is the oldest city in Western Europe and one of the oldest cities in the world. Lisbon has one of the mildest climates in Europe. The city is sunny throughout the year, with an annual average of 2900-3300 hours of sunshine.

Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

The city’s compact, cobblestoned heart is easily explored on foot or via its old-fashioned trams and funiculars. The Moorish Alfama district has narrow, winding streets and taverns with fado singers. Chiado and its cafes, shopping and seafood restaurants adjoins Bairro Alto, known for nightlife.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum complex, set amid serene gardens, displays noted art collections. On the waterfront are the ornate 16th-century Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, and, to the east, the ultramodern Parque das Nações district and its massive Oceanário aquarium.

Move Sports

A Message from our CEO

At Move Sports, we're powered by our passion for sports. I believe in the transformative power of sports, be it with football and rugby youth athletes , pro teams from multiple sports or company employees enjoying a footgolf tournament . Sports is always a celebration of the human body and the human soul working together. Sports make us bigger, better - not only physically, but mentally too.

Let's share our love for sports.

The Move Sports Creed

The game changers.

You definitely want to book a sports tour or a training camp with Move Sports. Being Portuguese, we take it personally. We have “go the extra mile” in our DNA.

You can count on our professionalism for all the essentials. But expect us to always be on the lookout for that extra detail that fits in so well with your program.

It can be a technical training session with Ronaldo’s former coach. It can be a PhD (a Physical Deluxe) with the guy that took Portugal’s U20 Rugby team to the top. It can be those gourmet burgers on the seafront that your team is dreaming about post-session.

In a nutshell, we don't rest until someone on the tour posts “#movesports #TheGameChangers It was awesome, mate!" on social media.

This is a commitment. We take it personally.

Cosmopolitan, fluent in Globish and a set of other world languages, with a “next challenge, boss?” daily attitude, our crew embodies the Move Sports Creed.

Expect serious sports stuff. Are you ready to move?

Meet the Team

Sunshine and the Sea

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

The Algarve is alluring for its stunning coast and laidback feel. Coastal Algarve receives much acclaim for its breathtaking cliffs, golden beaches, scalloped bays and sandy islands. But it is also rich in history. There are Moorish and Renaissance influences abound. Here, the famous voyager, Prince Henry the Navigator, began his explorations and Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his epic voyage of discovery. The enchanting inner Algarve boasts pretty castle towns and historic villages, cork tree– and flower-covered hillsides, and birdlife.

Portugal ms2

Spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo, Lisbon offers all the delights you’d expect of Portugal’s star attraction, yet with half the fuss of other European capitals. Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums are all part of the colorful cityscape, but the real delights of discovery lie in wandering the narrow lanes of Lisbon’s lovely backstreets. The Lisbon experience encompasses so many things, from enjoying a fresh pastry and bica (espresso) on a petite leafy plaza to window-shopping in elegant Chiado. It’s mingling with Lisboêtas at a neighborhood festival or watching the sunset from the old Moorish castle.

In the blue Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and America, the 9 islands of the archipelago are an autonomous region of Portugal. Rich in culture, abundant in wildlife and one of the best whale watching spots in the world. The array of activities offered means you could be visiting a UNESCO World Heritage site one day, walking up a snow-capped mountain and soaking in thermal rock pools the next day, and then swimming with wild dolphins and watching sperm whales the day after. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, nature lover or just want to relax on a beautiful exotic island, The Azores is an archipelago of lush green volcanic islands ready for you to explore.

Portuguese Riviera:

The Riviera stretches from Lisbon and Cascais. The coastline has become a place where the elite vacation between September and October, and a popular tourist destination for its chic look. Removed from the city, the Lisbon coastline is easy access to all the culture that Lisbon offers. It has become a hotspot for major international celebrities from the world of fashion, sport, and entertainment. The Riviera is also known for its world-class conditions for surfing.

Destination Must-Do's

Portugal md1

Fado Performance:

Fado is a popular style of music in Lisbon, Portugal. In Lisbon, Fado is always sung by a solo performer, while in other regions of Portugal it is typically performed in a group. Fado can be traced back to the 1820s, but it is said to have much earlier origins. This style of music has a dramatic sound with lyrics that speak of the struggles of daily life, and the melodies, performed by string instruments, are melancholy.

Portugal md2

Alentejo Wine Region:

The Alentejo region is a land reminiscent of Tuscany, with its vast landscape dotted with vineyards, cork oaks and olive trees. The land has seen occupation of the Romans and Moors which is reflected in the well-preserved city of Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wine is perhaps its biggest treasure. Here there are more than 250 wine producers who create aromatic, fresh white wines and more intense, smooth, ruby reds.

Portugal md3

São Miguel Island:

Known as “The Green Island,” this is the largest in the archipelago. Dazzling lakes, sandy beaches and dramatic mountains provide a stunning backdrop while tea plantations and pineapple groves make full use of the hillsides. Visit fascinating villages like Furnas, built inside a volcanic crater; and geological wonders such as Sete Cidades, twin crater lakes linked by narrow passage. It is also an excellent base from which to explore the wide variety of outdoor activities that make The Azores a top destination.

Portugal md4

Similar to Spain’s paradors, Portugal’s pousadas began to operate in the mid-20th century and showcase a true taste of their location. In addition to regional hospitality and cuisine, these beautiful hotels — often in idyllic locations — offer visitors a sense of history, culture and tradition. They are uniquely Portuguese and reside in some of the most beautiful areas; some actually sit in the shadows of historic monuments. These luxurious accommodations highlight great attention to detail, exceptional service and warm hospitality. From historic castles and former monasteries or convents to palaces and fortresses, they embody the Explorations concept of accommodations that capture the spirit of your destination.

14 things Portugal locals want you to know before you visit

Learn how to act like a local in Portugal by following these key tips © AnnaTamila / Shutterstock

Many years ago, as a young backpacker, I made plenty of mistakes when traveling around Portugal – from trying to see everything on one trip to indulging in free appetizers that weren’t really free.

Since becoming both an honorary Lisboeta (Lisbon resident) and Tripeiro (Porto dweller), I have learned some essentials about the country. From the best methods for getting around to wardrobe essentials. Here are the key tips to help you make the most out of your trip to Portugal.

Don’t try to see it all in one trip

Portugal is a small country – roughly the size of the state of Indiana in North America and slightly larger than Scotland. But there’s a lot to see here , from hilltop villages in the Alentejo to remote UNESCO World Heritage sites , not to mention over 100 beaches in the Algarve. A rookie mistake is trying to see all of Portugal during one visit. Even if you have a few weeks to spare, you won’t be able to visit everything in this diverse country. Instead, pick one or two regions and focus your trip there, allowing yourself time to see both highlights as well as local markets, vineyards and other less-visited attractions.

Decide where to go

The mountains, the seaside, cobblestone-lined city streets? Portugal has plenty of options when it comes to travel. With a week at your disposal, you can combine a bit of urban adventure with scenic getaways nearby. If you have Lisbon in mind, you can spend several days there, along with day trips to Cascais , Sintra and the beach-dotted Setúbal Peninsula , or spend a couple of days in Évora or on the lovely Alentejo coastline.

A great northern itinerary combines Porto with some vineyard visits along the picturesque Douro River . Beach lovers might skip city life altogether and spend their time in the Algarve , checking out cliff-backed beaches, hidden coves and quiet fishing villages. If you have something more active in mind, plan a hiking outing in the mountains of the Serra da Estrela , which you can pair with time spent exploring craggy villages like Manteigas and Linhares, as well as the university town of Coimbra .

Book your accommodation well in advance

Portugal’s growing popularity means some of the best places to stay get booked up months in advance. This is especially true if you’re traveling in the peak months of June through August .  Once you have your itinerary organized, reserve your lodging. If you’re traveling off-season (November through March), you’ll have much more flexibility – so you can book your first few nights and plan your other nights on the go.

Lower your carbon footprint by traveling on trains and buses

You can go green by ditching the car and getting around by public transportation. Portugal has a decent train network that connects major cities like Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Faro. Buses help fill in the gaps to smaller towns across the country. Service has expanded in recent years, particularly in the south, where the new Vamus Algarve covers just about every part of the Algarve, from tiny beach villages on the central coast to the soaring sea cliffs near Sagres . Skipping the car rental also means you won't have to hassle with parking, toll roads and heavy traffic, among other things.

Don’t bother taking a taxi from the airport

Speaking of trains and buses, as soon as you arrive, you can save money and cut down on CO2 emissions by hopping on public transport from the airport. Portugal’s three international airports all have good options for whisking you into town. The Lisbon metro’s linha vermelha (red line) can get you into the center, as can the speedy Aerobus, while Porto’s metro (violet line E) runs from the airport to the heart of town. From Faro airport in the south, you can take the Vamus Algarve Aerobus, which shuttles into Faro and also to the key towns of Albufeira , Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos .

Remember the cardinal rule of dining in Portugal: nothing is free

Servers often bring bread, butter, olives and even cheese or other appetizers to diners before their meal. Keep in mind that these unordered items will always be added to your bill if you choose to partake. If you don’t want them, just send them away – a polite "no thank you" ( não obrigado/a ) will do the job. Prices for couvert range from €2 per person and upwards.

Bring a few smart-casual outfits

Shorts are fine on the beach, but if you wear them around the city, you’ll quickly brand yourself as a tourist. At nicer restaurants, bars and nightclubs, you’ll want to follow the local lead and dress things up a bit.

Old city houses over Douro river and many tourists having lunch at outdoor restaurant

Become an expert on tipping etiquette

At restaurants in Portugal, many locals don’t tip at all or simply round up when paying for a meal. In more tourist-oriented establishments, a tip is more common – usually around 10% – and may even be added as a service charge. Tipping is not expected in cafes or bars. However, if you’re in a fancy high-end place, you should plan on tipping (along the lines of €1 for a specialty cocktail). Rounding up the fare is also common practice when taking a taxi or rideshare.

Bring your own bag to the market

Portugal has huge markets where you can see stalls of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as charcuterie, cheeses, olives, bakery items and other fare. Amid such culinary largesse, you can assemble a first-rate picnic, just be sure to bring your own bag to the market. You might want to throw in a corkscrew so you’re always prepared to pop open a bottle of vinho verde , an Alentejo red and other good-value Portuguese wines.

Rear View Of Woman On Railing By Sea

Pack sturdy shoes

Even if you limit your travels to the city, you’ll want to have good shoes. You’ll find steep streets, loose cobblestones and uneven sidewalks in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and many other towns. Save the heels and dress shoes for nicer restaurants and nightclubs. Good shoes will also come in handy when you want to take a walk beyond the town. Across the country, Portugal has some magnificent hikes , like the stunning clifftop trail of Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos – not difficult to do, but you need proper footwear.

Dress modestly when visiting churches

Save the shorts, short skirts and tank tops for the beach – keep things covered up when visiting the cathedrals ( Sés ) and monasteries of Portugal.

And don’t forget to throw in the swimsuit

No matter where you roam in Portugal, you’re never far from the beach or a sparkling inland lake or river. Porto and Lisbon both have lovely beaches within easy reach of the city center, while remote corners of Portugal – like Peneda-Gerês National Park have waterfalls and natural pools. It would be a mistake not to bring your swimsuit, even if you think you won’t need it.

Learn some Portuguese and use it

Outside of Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, you might encounter people with limited English. For smooth sailing, it helps to learn some Portuguese. If nothing else, locals appreciate the effort to speak their language, however rudimentary your accent. When entering a room, it’s polite to say " bom dia " (good day) or " boa tarde " (good afternoon) to those around you.

Be mindful of petty crime

Portugal is generally a safe country to visit with a low overall crime rate – violent crime is extremely rare. Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are the main concerns to keep in mind, especially when traveling on the trams and metro in Lisbon or Porto. Avoid moving around during the crowded peak times, and don’t zone out on your phone. At night, be cautious walking around empty streets wherever you are: you’re better off taking a taxi.

Car break-ins can also happen, and rental vehicles are sometimes targeted. Don’t leave anything of value in your car, and it's best not to leave luggage or other items in the trunk/boot of your vehicle (yet another good reason to embrace public transportation).

Travis Kelce booed while at NBA playoffs with Patrick, Brittany Mahomes as Taylor Swift takes Eras Tour to Spain

He’s on the bleachers.

As Taylor Swift wrapped up the Portugal leg of her Eras Tour on Sunday, Travis Kelce sat courtside at the NBA playoffs in Dallas — and fans in Texas were not happy to see him.

The Kansas City Chiefs player, 34, had a front row to see the Dallas Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals with Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes.

Kelce dressed casually in ripped jeans and an apple graphic tee, keeping a low profile in sunglasses.

Patrick, 28, similarly sported a white shirt and cargo pants, while his wife, also 28, rocked a white vest and curled tresses.

Brittany posted a picture from their night out via Instagram Stories over the weekend.

The trio appeared on the Jumbotron during the game, with Kelce showing a shocked expression as he got booed by audience members .

When the camera panned to Patrick and Brittany, however, fans cheered — and got even louder when the quarterback stood up to egg them on.

He and Kelce have played on the Chiefs together since 2017, winning three Super Bowls .

The duo often hang out off the field, most recently attending F1 Miami Grand Prix earlier this month.

Last week, Patrick joked to “Pat McAfee Show” viewers he wants “some credit” for bringing Kelce and Swift, 34, together since he played “matchmaker” by inviting his teammate to one of the singer’s July 2023 concerts.

Since they became an item , Kelce has attended Swift’s shows in Buenos Aires, Sydney, Singapore and Paris.

The European leg of her tour kicked off this month, and Swift played her fourth and final Lisbon, Portugal, show on Sunday.

Before her Spain performances begin on Wednesday, the Grammy winner gushed via Instagram that her Portuguese fans made her “feel right at home” for her first time performing there.

Portugal Euro 2024 squad guide: The complete package, if the balance is right

Portugal have top-level defenders, discipline and flair in midfield, and creativity and goals in attack, plus what their manager believes is the perfect blend of youth and experience. They will take some stopping at Euro 2024…

The manager

After falling short of winning a title with one country’s ‘golden generation’ of players, Roberto Martinez is now tasked with going one better with another set.

Martinez led Belgium to the top of FIFA ’s world rankings and kept them there for more than half of his six-year tenure but, across three major tournaments, they couldn’t go that final step. They lost to World Cup winners France in the semi-finals in 2018 and European Championship winners Italy in the quarters in 2021. Martinez’s reign ended horribly in 2022 with an embarrassing group-stage exit from the Qatar World Cup, bowing out after drawing 0-0 with Croatia when the only target Romelu Lukaku hit was the dugout in a post-match rage.

Martinez is a likeable figure and has started with Portugal in the same fashion he did with Belgium; winning matches and playing a welcome brand of high-energy attacking football that fans can embrace.

They cruised through qualifying with 10 victories from Martinez’s first 10 matches in charge. In March came the first hiccup, a 2-0 friendly defeat to Slovenia , but Martinez is still experimenting with tactics and formations (3-4-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 with a ‘box midfield’ have been tried) as he looks to crack the elusive Portugal attacking formula while keeping enough defensive rigidity to win a tournament.

His predecessor, Fernando Santos, will forever be an icon for leading Portugal to glory in Euro 2016 , but he was a defensive coach and when Bruno Fernandes , Bernardo Silva , Joao Felix , Diogo Jota , Goncalo Ramos and Rafael Leao joined Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s attacking ranks, the public wanted panache from their team.

Santos couldn’t combine flair with victories to the level required and that task now falls upon Martinez.

With Belgium, things went stale for him as their best players aged and he regressed to more of a counter-attacking style. With Portugal, things still feel fresh and exciting. Could they be about to hit a sweet spot in Germany?

The household name in waiting

Joao Neves  has the potential to be the breakout star of the whole tournament.

He only made his senior club debut 18 months ago but, by the end of 2023, Neves, 19, was in the Portugal squad and an inspirational presence in Benfica’s midfield.

What is he good at? Well, pretty much everything. Think Rodri without the experience and nous, but with added energy and pizzazz. A ball-winner, tackler, tempo dictator, dribbler, excellent passer and decent in front of goal. Neves plays as a No 6 (deep-lying midfielder) for Benfica but he can push higher up the pitch.

“The best way to judge a player is to look at the reaction in the changing room,” Martinez said of Neves. “Joao, at 19 years of age, earned the respect of the changing room in two days. I’d never seen that in my career. It was striking.”

Martinez restricted him to a total of 40 minutes across his first five caps, but he was unleashed for the full game in Portugal’s 4-2 friendly win over Finland this week. Given his vast array of qualities, there is little doubt Neves is headed for the very top. It’s just a matter of when.

Options. Portugal’s squad is ludicrously strong, to the extent that Sporting Lisbon forward Pedro Goncalves (18 goals and 17 assists in all competitions last season) and Braga attacker Ricardo Horta (13 goals and 14 assists) and didn’t get in the 26. Manchester City ’s Matheus Nunes didn’t get in initially, either, but was called up as a replacement for the injured Otavio.

If you’re a fan of the Champions League or Wolverhampton Wanderers , Portugal’s players will be very familiar to you — three-quarters of the squad either played in that competition or for that team last season.

There is high-end quality everywhere. For example, they can cope with the absence of their only injured first-team player, Bayern Munich left-back Raphael Guerreiro, because they can just play some guy from Paris Saint-Germain called Nuno Mendes . Or if not him how about Joao Cancelo ? Or Diogo Dalot ?

The same is true of every position. It’s almost the same squad as in Qatar, but with Jota (who was injured in 2022) in, plus three bright new young things Goncalo Inacio (22-year-old Sporting centre-back), Neves and Francisco Conceicao (21-year-old Porto forward). The fit-again Pedro Neto is also in and if he can replicate his form from the opening months of the Premier League season, he will be an asset from the bench.

Also since Qatar, certain players have improved or come to the fore, with Joao Palhinha and Rafael Leao earning much more game time than under Santos, while gifted PSG midfielder Vitinha was in Ligue 1’s team of the season for 2023-24.

Ronaldo was also restored to the XI after being dropped during the World Cup. He scored 10 in qualifying and, aged 38, remains the figurehead, leader and focal point of this Portugal side. He’s about to play in his sixth Euros.

sports tour portugal

Working out how best to use Ronaldo, Fernandes, Bernardo, Leao, Jota, Joao Felix, Ramos and the rest is a problem any manager would want, so it’s hardly a weakness, but also not an easy puzzle to solve, as Santos found out when Portugal wilted in losing 2-0 to a stubborn, organised low block from Morocco in the quarter-finals in Qatar.

In the defence, there is a big question mark over who will partner Ruben Dias , with youngsters Antonio Silva , 20, from Benfica and Inacio rotated during qualifying with a man two decades their senior in Pepe who, yes, is still in the Portuguese ranks at 41. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa boobed at the World Cup but is usually a solid presence.

There is also the fact that Martinez will go into the tournament having not been presented with a difficult competitive match yet.

Winning all 10 qualifiers was an impressive feat but, to be fair, the group was so easy Portugal’s under-21s could have won it given the standard of opposition in Slovakia (48th in FIFA’s rankings), Iceland (72nd), Bosnia & Herzegovina (74th), Luxembourg (87th) and Liechtenstein (202nd).

Thing you didn’t know

If Pepe plays in Germany, he’ll become the oldest player to play in a European Championship, taking the record from Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, whose body, mind and tracksuit bottoms were 40 years and 86 days old when he played against Belgium in 2016.

Expectations back home

In the group stage, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia probably won’t provide much resistance, but Portugal are looking far beyond that. They are good enough to win it and expectations are duly very high.

Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (Porto), Rui Patricio (Roma), Jose Sa (Wolves)

Defenders: Ruben Dias (Manchester City), Danilo Pereira (PSG), Antonio Silva (Benfica), Pepe (Porto), Goncalo Inacio (Sporting), Nelson Semedo (Wolves), Joao Cancelo ( Barcelona ), Diogo Dalot ( Manchester United ), Nuno Mendes (PSG).

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Vitinha (PSG), Ruben Neves (Al Hilal), Joao Palhinha ( Fulham ), Joao Neves (Benfica), Matheus Nunes (Manchester City)

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nassr), Diogo Jota ( Liverpool ), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Joao Felix (Barcelona, on loan from Atletico Madrid), Rafael Leao ( AC Milan ), Goncalo Ramos (PSG), Pedro Neto (Wolves), Francisco Conceicao (Porto)

Travis Kelce’s exact location is a “Blank Space” — but he’s dropping hints.

The athlete recorded Wednesday’s episode of his and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast remotely after attending one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Paris, greeting fans with a “Bonjour.”

When Jason, 36, asked his younger brother for a a “country of origin,” Travis played coy.

“I can give you a continent. I’m in Europe,” the tight end, 34, said before clarifying he would not play a “guessing game.”

Jason, who was also filming outside of their regular studio while in New York, told listeners that he believed the Kansas City Chiefs player was in France.

“Travis is overseas,” the retired NFL star said. “He will not disclose his country but he did give us an introduction with a certain language, so I’m gonna bet on that one.”

He also urged fans to “go see it.”

Jason pointed out that Travis has now attended five of Swift’s shows, starting with a Kansas City concert before they began dating .

Travis attempted, unsuccessfully, to give the pop star his phone number in a friendship bracelet after the July 2023 show.

Taylor Swift

Since the couple went public with their romance , Travis has been in the audience for stops in Buenos Aires , Sydney and Singapore.

He hinted at more upcoming appearances, teasing his plans to “fly around and have some fun … all over the world this off-season.”

Swift next takes the stage Friday in Sweden.

Taylor swift's surprise songs from night 2 of her lisbon eras tour show, including double mashups, share this article.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour continued its international journey on Saturday night in Portugal (afternoon in the United States) with the second of two shows in Lisbon. The now 14-time Grammy winner will be touring almost non-stop for the entire year, and at each show she adds two “surprise songs” to her 44-song, three hour plus set list.

For the second night in Lisbon, Swift went with two double mashups. On guitar, she played “The Tortured Poets Department” from her new album with the same name mixed with “Now That We Don’t Talk” from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) . On Piano, Swift broke out “You’re On Your Own Kid” from Midnights mixed with “Long Live” from Speak Now.
