Idyllically situated in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is a mecca for foodies, tech experts and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're here to see its city-based attractions like the Olympic Sculpture Park or its natural wonders like Mount Si , the best way to experience it all is with a guided tour. Browse through these 7 top Seattle tours, identified by U.S. News using both expert opinions and traveler sentiment, to help you plan your ideal getaway.

Argosy Cruises – Harbor Cruise

Sail through Seattle's Elliott Bay with Argosy Cruises. The one-hour narrated boat tour takes passengers through Puget Sound, by the shipping port and offers city skyline views. The vessel sports a full-service bar with snacks and alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. Tour-goers report seeing lots of wildlife and fantastic views. They also enjoy their friendly and informative guides. Seating is first-come, first-served, and boarding begins 20 minutes ahead of departure time. Tickets start at $33 for adults and $20 for kids ages 4 to 12; children 3 and younger ride for free. Tours run multiple times daily during peak summer months; there is an abbreviated schedule in the winter. The company also conducts wine cruises, as well as cruises of Lake Washington, among other sailings.

Tours Northwest – Mt Rainier Tour

A trip to Mount Rainier is a must when visiting Seattle, but if you don't want to navigate to the peak yourself, consider this daytrip with Tours Northwest. You'll ride in an air-conditioned coach bus through incredible scenery en route to the mountain. At the park, you'll have the opportunity to hike as much or as little as you want to see waterfalls, meadows and old-growth forests. Tourgoers rave about their guides' knowledge of the park and its trails. They also relish the beautiful scenery and the frequent stops for photo-ops and exploration. Tours operate May through October. Each tour begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts about 10 hours. Tickets for adults cost approximately $140 and tickets for children 7 to 12 cost approximately $120. Park fees are included, but you will need to pay for lunch. Tours Northwest also provides tours of Seattle and the Boeing facility.

Customized Tours – Olympic National Park Tour

Olympic National Park encompasses nearly 1 million acres and features a variety of ecosystems, including temperate rainforests, mountains and coastline. Customized Tours' daylong outing of the park aims to see each of these ecosystems. The tour begins with pickup from select Seattle hotels before hopping on a ferry ride across the Puget Sound to explore the park. Travelers agree that the park is incredible and the long day (about 12 hours) is worth it. They also advise wearing comfortable shoes; you'll be chauffeured in a bus to different locations, but you will still do a lot of walking. Tickets start at $170 for adults and $145 for children 11 and younger. Pickups start around 7:30 a.m. Tours run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from April through October. The company operates several other Seattle outings, including city tours and trips to Mount Rainier.

Beneath the Streets

Learn about the formation of Seattle and its original neighborhood, Pioneer Square, on this one-hour Beneath the Streets tour. Expert guides will lead you through underground passageways dating back to the 1890s, sharing historic information, along with stories of the Klondike Gold Rush, the city's architecture and the Coast Salish tribes who originally inhabited the area. Tourgoers describe the experience as full of interesting information and praise their well-educated guides. Tours, limited to 16 people, leave every 30 minutes between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Though tours run daily, there is limited availability on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets cost approximately $25 for adults, $22 for college students and teens, and $15 for children ages 7 to 12. The company also operates an adults-only red-light district tour.

Eat Seattle – Food Tour of Pike Place

Taste your way through Seattle's famous Pike Place Market with a chef leading the way. Guides will share insider tips about where area chefs shop and explain the history of the market. Along the way, you could sample chowder, chocolate, pasta and more. Tour-takers say the guides are wonderful and the food is delicious. Many commented the samples are enough for lunch. The two-hour tours depart several times daily, typically between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets cost about $50 per person. Abbreviated, hourlong tours of the market are also available on select days.

Puget Sound Express – Seattle Whale Watching Tours

A variety of wildlife species call Seattle home, including several different types of whales. The Puget Sound Express offers a half-day whale-watching tour that gives visitors the opportunity to see orcas, humpback whales, otters, sea lions and more in the San Juan Islands. The company's speedy boats reach the islands in about an hour and feature indoor seating with large windows, outdoor viewing decks and a cafe serving fresh blueberry buckle. Plus, the Puget Sound Express guarantees you will see whales on your tour or your next trip is free. Tourgoers rave about the courteous crew and all the wildlife spotted thanks to the crew's attentiveness and knowledge of the area. Tours last four to five hours and leave daily from April through October. Exact departure times vary by season. Ticket prices start at $135 for adults and $95 for children 2 to 10, while children younger than 2 ride for free. The company also offers bird-watching and multi-day wildlife cruises.

Shutter Tours – Snoqualmie Falls and Seattle City Tour

Travelers enjoy this comprehensive tour because it offers a balance of gorgeous natural scenery and a great overview of the city's top sights. During the four-hour excursion, tourgoers start with a lesson in Seattle history, exploring the Pioneer Square area – the hub of the Klondike Gold Rush. Travelers are then transported to the beautiful Snoqualmie Falls in the Cascade foothills. Next, the tour continues to the famous Fremont Troll and then the Ballard Locks. Finally, it concludes at Kerry Park , a popular spot to snap photos of the Seattle skyline. Reviewers recommend booking this tour your first day in Seattle to get your bearings. Tickets cost approximately $70 for adults, $65 for seniors, and $55 for children 12 and younger. Tours run daily at 10 a.m. Shutter Tours also operates a tour to Mount Rainier and a Tulip Festival tour every April.

Join Our Highly Rated Seattle Food Tours!

We made several stops where we got out of the van, including a lengthy tour of the Ballard Locks led by our guide. Our tour guide, Lucky, was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour exceptional. The tour gave us a great overview of the history of Seattle, its culture and its many interesting sites. I would highly recommend the tour.

Truly the best part of our trip to Seattle. Seattle Food Tour was yummy and the information was great, Marcia has so much energy and definitely knows her way around the market. I look forward to doing another tour in the future.

The Pike Place Market food tour was fantastic. And Lucky Lane, our tour guide, was super entertaining and helpful, providing us with additional tips for visiting Seattle and dropping us near places of interest, e.g. space needle, on the way back.

We only had a couple of days in Seattle and this tour gave us a comprehensive overview of all of the major sights of the city. Our guide Dave (Elvis) was brilliant. Friendly, funny and wonderfully informative about the city. Thank you for a lovely tour and great value for money.

Dave (Elvis) picked us up on time in a nice comfortable mid-sized coach. When we arrived at Boeing a Dreamlifter was just about to take off and he made sure we got to the roof to see it and video it. He made sure we understood the processes and procedures involved in the tour. The factory is engineering on a huge scale and we saw the production lines for 747, 777 and Dreamliner. An excellent trip all round.

Simply AMAZING!!!!!! Great food tour! Had such a fantastic time! The walking is very doable and the scenery of the market is amazing!

Underground Tour Courtesy of Underground Tour

While the Great Seattle Fire in 1889 wasn’t a happy occasion, it did give Seattle the opportunity to rebuild—which was a fortunate thing, given that the original downtown was prone to flooding due to its proximity to Elliott Bay. As the city rebuilt everything above previous street levels, an entire underground world was born. Today, you can explore its passageways in Pioneer Square on Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour or Beneath the Streets . Both tours offer a healthy dose of history and a walk below ground.

Water World

Water is a huge part of Seattle’s story, and what better way to explore its marine history than by going to the source itself? Argosy Cruises has five tour options, including its signature Harbor Cruise. This one-hour trip follows the shoreline of Elliott Bay, getting a closer look at the container ships, cruise ships, and harbor seals that ply the Puget Sound waters. Sailing Seattle puts you on a high-performance racing yacht for a relaxing, wind-in-your-hair journey. Waterways Cruises and Events focuses on dining cruises aboard its 105-foot-long yacht, like the Sunday Supper Cruise that takes a spin around Lake Union and Lake Washington while guests enjoy a buffet stocked with sockeye salmon and apple crisp.

Urban Landscapes

City Sightseeing Tours

Once you shed your sea legs, there’s plenty to see back on land. Because Seattle is a forward-thinking city, it’s only appropriate to explore on Segways, two-wheeled transportation devices that make it easy for you to zip from the waterfront to Pioneer Square and Pike Place Market to Seattle Center, under the guidance of Seattle Segway Tours . Or go at your own pace with City Sightseeing Seattle , a hop-on/hop-off open-top bus that circles around to 16 of the city’s top sites and attractions. If you want to get a little farther out of town, Tours Northwest can whisk you away in a mini-coach to Mount Rainier, in addition to three-hour tours around the city. With longtime tour operator Show Me Seattle , see the city in a small group, or taste your way through Pike Place Market. Cruise passengers, take note: There are special offerings for you from all the shuttle bus companies.

Swap the water rudders for a giant propeller and take in the scenery via helicopter with Seattle HeliTours , which offers three routes leaving from Auburn Municipal Airport, and Georgetown-based Atomic Helicopters , with four itineraries covering the city, Snoqualmie Falls, Lake Washington, and marinas of Puget Sound. For an intimate, luxurious experience, book a semi-private or private hot air balloon ride with Seattle Ballooning to get a birds-eye view of downtown Seattle and Mt. Rainier, topped off with a champagne toast at the end of the flight.

Human Powered

It’s great to explore by boat, shuttle, and plane, but sometimes you just want to keep it simple. Get around on your own two feet with the Seattle Free Walking Tours , which cover four topics: Pike Place Market, historic Seattle, and the city’s highlights. As the name implies, there are no high ticket prices here—pay what you feel it’s worth. Those with a particular interest in design will want to check out the walking tours from Seattle Architecture Foundation . With these, you can take a deeper dive into specific subjects like art deco and design details. Combine your history tour with a sweat session from Seattle Bicycle Tours , which has plenty of options for both guided tours on electric or standard bicycles. Keep the human-powered transportation theme going by getting out on the water with Alki Kayak Tours , offering paddles during the day, at sunset, and during every full moon. The particularly adventurous can take an overnight camping trip to Blake Island, where you can explore the forest trails and beaches after paddling across the Puget Sound for a perfect Northwest day.

The itinerary, hikes and activities were great. The best feature of the hotel in Seattle was location. The quality of the hotels went from bad to worst. On the one we stayed the last two nights there was not even soap, we had to go and ask for it and almost beg for shampoo, they also just gave us one key for a double room, There was always a sense of improvisation and lack of communication. The guide tried his best to save the day, every day. We would arrive tired and hungry and most places were closed already. The guide on the last day went out of his way to deliver participants to their destinations, not just the airport but the train station, etc. that was greatly appreciated, his energy, enthusiasm and driving skills made of this a Good trip. There is a lot of room for improvement.

The scenic portion was excellent. Mike Brown was excellent. The seating in the van was tight for so many hours. We only had 9 and I couldn’t imagine 14 in van. The HoJo in Vancouver is not very good. Old, moldy and broken at best

An absolute must do!! I just finished this amazing adventure with Bindlestiff tours and am so grateful I had the opportunity to do it! The incredible scenery combined with the small close knit group and the outstanding guide Chris P made this trip one to remember :) A tour guide can either make or break a group and Chris certainly made it! He was an excellent driver and always made sure everyone was ok :) Thank you for making my first time to Canada amazing!

Pacific Coast Adventure

We had a great time on our vacation. Linda Perez and David Day were definitely seasoned professionals in their field. There are a couple of things that could be improved: water on the bus; nametags; the Mill Casino & Hotel and the hotel in Eureka were very disappointing; we stopped at Frey Mayers grocery store for lunch on Wednesday instead of a beach party picnic - ate on the bus because it was raining- there should have been a plan B in case of rain; on Saturday we did a tour of the Boeing Factory which was very nice, I wish the tour would have included a more tours with the group instead of we were on our own; The Elizabeth Street Inn was lovely and probably our favorite place we stayed. I guess if I was offer one criticism it would be that Linda obviously been doing this for a long time and is very familiar with the large cities, but as we are touring Seattle, Portland and San Francisco, she was giving so much information on good places to eat and things to do, but as a tourist it was too much too remember. If maybe they could have a brochure about this it would be very helpful.

Ken, our guide was knowledgeable, efficient, courteous and fun. The tour would have been better with a full day in Seattle spending 2 nights there. You could skip Leavenworth, Yakima and the nature center in Bend.

What people love about seattle tours.

This was a good trip with beautiful views and awesome hiking. BUT, there is a lot of driving. A lot of driving. New hotel every night except one two night stay. Many hours everyday driving in a full van, not all that comfortable. We often left around 7:30 and did not arrive to our new location until 5-6 p.m. While these days included short stops and hikes it was still 5 to 6 hours of driving most days.

Western Washington State boasts four incredible travel destinations — Seattle, the San Juan Islands, the Olympic Peninsula and Mount Rainier.

Why visit them one at a time when you can discover all five of these incredible places on a single road trip lasting between 10 and 14 days?

Starting at SeaTac International Airport, of course, where road trippers can tap into 16 different rental agencies, many of them with economy, intermediate and even full-sized cars and with spring rates below $50 per day.

Chihuly Garden and Glass at Seattle Center.

Seattle: Back to the Future

“Living in the Space Age” was the motto of the 1962 Century 21 Exposition in Seattle. And now that we’re in that century, it’s fun looking back to see what endures from a world fair that inspired more than 10 million visitors and earned headlines around the globe.

More than 60 years after it opened — and helped inspire The Jetsons TV show — the Space Needle remains one of the nation’s most iconic structures. Whether you consider it the ultimate expression of Mid Century Modern or the crowning glory of Googie architecture, the 605 -foot (184-meter) tower looks as futuristic as the day it opened. A recent renovation added a rotating glass floor with glass benches and windows that slant outwards for an even more vertiginous experience.

Down at ground level, the original exposition ground is now Seattle Center , an eclectic culture and entertainment complex that includes the Museum of Pop Culture (with its Science Fiction & Fantasy Hall of Fame) and the incredible Chihuly Garden and Glass .

From there you can hop the Seattle Center Monorail — another enduring relic of the 1962 World’s Fair — into downtown Seattle. Sleep someplace central like the hip State Hotel , a five-minute walk from Pike Place Market , the Seattle Art Museum , and waterfront restaurants.

Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

San Juans: Washington’s Treasure Islands

With the Emerald City in your rearview mirror, cruise up Interstate-5 to Anacortes and drive onto a Washington State Ferry bound for Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

Besides being a great place to chill out for a couple of days, the island offers an enticing blend of nature, history and surprisingly good food for such a remote destination.

The two units of the San Juan Island National Historical Park preserve buildings and battlements left over from the 1859 “Pig War” between the U.S. and Britain over control of the islands. The south unit is a great place to glimpse those utterly cute San Juan Island foxes.

Lime Kiln Point State Park is renowned for its photogenic lighthouse (built in 1919) and cliff-top perches to watch orcas and other whales in the Haro Strait.

Animals are the focus of wildlife cruises from Friday Harbor, outfits like Maya’s Legacy Whale Watching that meander through the islands in search of orcas, humpbacks, stellar sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles and other critters that call the San Juans home.

Among the island’s many cool eating and drinking spots are the Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. with its amazing oysters and waterfront picnic tables, and gourmet seafood at the romantic Duck Soup . Overnight options range from the cozy Bird Rock Hotel to the stylish modern cabins of Saltwater Farm .

Olympic Peninsula: Mother Nature’s Masterpiece

On clear days you can easily see the Olympic Peninsula and its jagged snowy mountains rising on the far side of the Puget Sound. Getting there from San Juan Island is a three-step process that requires the ferry back to Anacortes, a one-hour drive to Fort Casey via the colossal Deception Pass Bridge (built in 1935) and Whidbey Island , and then another vehicle ferry over to Port Townsend with its well-preserved Victorian mansions.

Highway 101 meanders across the top of the peninsula to Port Angeles and gateways to lofty Hurricane Ridge, the leafy Sol Duc Valley, and gorgeous Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park . The rustic Log Cabin Resort (open May-September) on the lake’s north shore is an excellent place to base your stay on the park’s north side.

Following 101 around to the park’s west side — via the town of Forks and its vampire stories — are the magical Hoh Rain Forest with its resident elk herd, and the national park’s coastal Kalaloch area and seminal sands like Ruby Beach with its artsy driftwood piles and rocky sea stacks. One of the icons of vintage national park architecture, Lake Quinault Lodge (opened in 1926) offers excellent digs and woodsy ambience.

Moss-covered trees in the Hoh Rain Forest section of Olympic National Park.

Mount Rainier: One Who Touches The Sky

There are several ways to make the three-hour drive between Lake Quinault and the Nisqually (western) entrance station to Mount Rainier National Park . From there, scenic Paradise Road makes its way up the mountain’s south side with various trailheads, viewpoints, picnic areas, and Cougar Rock Campground along the way.

The Native American name for the mountain (Tahoma) translates into “One Who Touches the Sky,” and it certainly does. “Of all the fire mountains which like beacons, once blazed along the Pacific Coast, Mount Rainier is the noblest,” wrote John Muir after an 1888 visit. What the famed naturalist didn’t realize is that Rainier is still an active stratovolcano (although it hasn’t erupted since the 19 th century).

At the top of the road is Paradise , a cluster of buildings perched at 5,400 feet (1,600 meters) on the peak’s southern side. Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center offers exhibits, maps and advice on exploring the park. Just outside are several short trails across the rocky slope, covered in snow during winter and spring, and wildflowers in summer.

Another classic “parkitecture” hotel, Paradise Inn opened in 1916 and was later added to the National Register of Historic Places. The soaring A-frame lobby is a great place to hang out, even if you’re not staying overnight, while every table in the Paradise Inn Dining Room offers epic views.

From Paradise, the drive back to the SeaTac Airport Rental Car Center is roughly two hours.

Late in the spring, Mount Rainier and Paradise are still covered in snow.

Mt Rainier Tours FAQ

  • Chevron down What hotels do you pick up at?

Although we don’t offer direct hotel pickups for this tour, we have 4 convenient pickup locations within a short walk of most downtown hotels:

  • Pioneer Square: 300 Occidental Ave S Seattle, WA in front of The London Plane (Pickup is 30 minutes before tour start time)
  • Seattle Public Library: 1000 4th Ave Seattle, WA (Pickup is 20 minutes before tour start time)
  • Midtown: 1900 4th Ave Seattle, WA in front of the Urban Yoga Spa (Pickup is 10 minutes before tour start time)
  • MoPop Pickup: 300 Harrison St Seattle, WA (Pickup is 5 minutes before tour start time)

Plan to arrive at your meeting location 5 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. You’ll want to be on the lookout for a white mini-coach that says Tours Northwest.

  • Chevron down Why don’t you pick up directly at my hotel?

Downtown Seattle has such unpredictable and dynamic traffic conditions that offering hotel pickups on our standard tours (with up to 20 people who could all be staying at different hotels) would take valuable time away from the time we have for the tour.  We have 4 departure points, each very centrally located and very simple to get to, which makes it easier for everyone and means that we don’t waste any precious tour time doing multiple pickups around Seattle, one of which is likely just a few minutes walk from your hotel.  Feel free to contact us directly if you need further guidance on which pickup location is best for you, and if you haven’t yet chosen your accommodations, you can always let us know later.

  • Chevron down What is the best way to get from SeaTac to downtown Seattle?

The easiest option is to take an Uber, Lyft, or taxi to your pickup location (Pioneer Square is the furthest south, so closest to SeaTac).

Another less expensive option is to take the Link light rail from the Airport or Angle Lake station towards the University of Washington Station and exit at the Westlake Stop. When you exit, take the escalator upstairs to get to the street level.  Head north on 4th Avenue to our Midtown pickup at 1900 4th Ave Seattle, WA (Pickup is 10 minutes before tour start time)

  • Chevron down Where can I park my vehicle in downtown Seattle?

If you’re driving into town to meet up with a tour, we recommend meeting us at our MoPOP pickup location and parking near here.  Next to this pickup location is the Republic Parking (Memorial Stadium Lot) located on 401 5th Ave N, Seattle WA 9109 is right next to our MoPop pickup (they offer a $10 all-day rate if you’re in before 9am)

Other options include:

Pacific Place Garage located at 600 Pine St, Seattle, WA 98101 is two blocks from our Midtown pickup at 1900 4th Ave Seattle, WA, and has lower hourly rates than most downtown garages

On weekends (and after 4pm weekdays), take advantage of FREE Parking in the Amazon Doppler Building Garage located at 2021 7th Ave (7am – 2am) – this is about a 5 minute walk from our Midtown pickup at 1900 4th Ave Seattle, WA

  • Chevron down Why should I book directly through your website?

All availability on our website is live and up to date – you’ll get instant confirmation after booking.  Booking on our website also opens a direct line of communication so we can let you know about any important information or changes regarding your tour.  Booking direct cuts out the middle man, which means we can spend more money on making your experience perfect while keeping our prices as low as possible for you. We guarantee to offer the lowest prices directly – if you find a tour operated by us anywhere else advertised for cheaper – we will refund the difference.

  • Chevron down How do I know which bus is yours?

All of our tour buses are white and marked with Tours Northwest on the front or side.  Our drivers should be wearing a yellow shirt or jacket that says Tours Northwest and will be looking for you by name.

  • Chevron down Do I need to bring a printed voucher or copy of my confirmation?

If you book directly on our website or over the phone, a printed voucher or confirmation will not be needed. Our tour guides will check you in by name prior to boarding the bus.

  • Chevron down Are there bathrooms on the bus?

None of our mini-coaches are equipped with bathrooms, but our guides make every effort to provide opportunities for a public restroom every 60-90 minutes during our tours.

  • Chevron down Can I bring a wheelchair/stroller/luggage?

It may be possible to accommodate a folding wheelchair/stroller/some luggage, but we have limited storage space, so please get in touch with your requirements before booking so that we can advise accordingly.

  • Chevron down Do you have wheelchair accessible buses?

We do not have a wheelchair accesible bus available for this tour.  If you will only have a folding wheelchair, it can be stored on any of our buses with advanced notice.

  • Chevron down What should I wear to Mount Rainier National Park?

Please dress for comfort and the weather.  Comfortable shoes (ideally hiking boots with good traction and water resistance) will make a huge difference in your enjoyment of the tour.

For more details on what to expect from this tour at different times of the year, check out this blog post .

  • Chevron down What will the weather be like?

If only we knew… the weather on the mountain tends to be very unpredictable (even from one hour to the next).  In general, prepare for cooler temperatures at the higher elevations and the possibility of rain (or snow for many months).  During July and August, it may also be hot and sunny (although there may still be considerable snow on the ground), so you may want to bring sunscreen.

You can check this weather forecast for areas within the park (Paradise and Longmire are the relevant areas since we won’t be going to the summit on this tour).

You can also check these webcams for a live view of the weather conditions in the park.

  • Chevron down Do I need to bring food?

Food options in the park are extremely limited, but that is why we stop at a grocery store on our way out there.  You will have the opportunity to purchase whatever you would like for lunch, and we provide a cooler with ice packs that you can store it in as well.  Of course, if you prefer to bring food from elsewhere, you’re welcome to use our cooler and ice pack from the beginning of the tour as well.

  • Chevron down What should I do if I'm running late to my pickup?

Unfortunately, we cannot wait for more than a minute or two past the pickup time at any of our pickup locations. Please contact our office at 206-768-1234 as soon as you are aware you’ll be running late to discuss your options. There are no refunds available if you are not at your designated pickup location at the pickup time.

  • Chevron down What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that sometimes plans change or things come up. We offer full refunds on all tours canceled at least 24 hours in advance of the tour’s start time.  There are no refunds in the 24 hours leading up to the tour. For private tours, we ask for a minimum of 48 hours notice for a full refund.
