David Jones Unveils 2022 Christmas ‘A World of Wonder’ and Welcomes Back The Magic Cave

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at David Jones, as the iconic department store marked the launch of its 184th Christmas season nationwide with the unveiling of David Jones’ 2022 ‘A World of Wonder’ Christmas campaign.To commence the celebrations in South Australia, this Saturday, 12th November sees the return of Father Christmas to the Magic Cave in David Jones Adelaide Central Plaza to greet visitors, young and old, who will be treated to an array of mesmerising activities and entertainment.

The funhouse mirrors have been polished and the fairy lights are twinkling, ready for excited visitors who will descend on David Jones for this cherished South Australian tradition. The Magic Cave will feature the enchantment of years gone by with old favourites such as the vintage carousel, fairy-tale creatures, and animated displays to delight everyone.

Stephanie Trevor, Regional Manager of David Jones South Australia, says, “It simply wouldn’t be Christmas in Adelaide without the David Jones Magic Cave. Conveniently located in the centre of Rundle Mall, whether you stop by after a long day of Christmas shopping or make a special trip to the city for a day of family fun, the Magic Cave is a festive season essential.”

Father Christmas Photos return this year with an all-new festive forest installation and merry in-house characters to create the ultimate Christmas photo experience. Guests will be invited to take a seat alongside Father Christmas amidst a world of green wonderment, with full service-photographers capturing the special memory for families to treasure both now and in years to come. David Jones is proud to partner with the Starlight Children’s Foundation again this festive season to offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences to children in need. As well as donating $50,000 to the organisation, this year David Jones invites customers to make a gold coin donation to help grant the wishes of sick kids and their families this Christmas in store from the 31st of October to the 24th of December. In addition, customers can choose to wrap their Christmas gifts with the David Jones bespoke Christmas gift wrapping instore in exchange for a $2 gold coin donation towards Starlight, granting wishes for children in need this Christmas.

The Magic Cave has been part of Adelaide’s Christmas celebrations since 1896, when it was established in popular local department store John Martin’s. Today, the traditions of the Magic Cave still stand, supporting cultural heritage and providing a community experience full of joy for families.

Where to See Father Christmas in Adelaide – Book your Santa photos.

Taking the kids to see Santa is a Christmas tradition for many families… not to mention a great way to get a heads-up on what the small people in your household have on their Christmas wish list! 

You don’t have to go to the North Pole to get a photo with Father Christmas as his team of helpers are located all over Adelaide! Leading up to Christmas the big guy in the red suit will be making appearances in department stores and local shopping centres, and there are also sensitive Santa sessions and opportunities to take the family pet along too.  

Make sure you’re within earshot when the little ones give Santa some ideas on what they might like to unwrap under the tree!

I’ve sorted out the best places by location so you can find opportunities for Santa photos near you.

Many locations are also offering Christmas pet photography, ‘Baby’s First Christmas’ sessions and ‘Sensitive Santa’ sessions – calm and comfortable photography sessions run before stores open to create a relaxed and sensory-friendly Santa experience.

It’s that time of year when everyone takes their children for a photo with Santa, but if your dog is your fur baby, or you just want to spice up the festive photo this year, Santa Paws is here to take a cute photo with your furry friend instead.

Included in your Santa Paws photo package ticket is one photo with Santa (one print copy plus a digital copy). They’ll even throw in a little treat for your dog.

6. Greensborough Plaza

From 18 November 2023 Santa is visiting Greensborough Plaza every day in the lead-up to Christmas! This year, bookings open on 1 November and for each booking, you’ll have 15 minutes to gather with the whole family to snap a photo with the jolly man himself. 

Note that walk-in availability will be limited on weekends and the week before Christmas, so it’s best to book your slot ahead of time to avoid missing out.

7. Myer Northland

Santa is due to arrive at Myer Northland very soon and it will be the perfect time to have your photo taken with The Jolly Man himself! In 2023 bookings will be essential as in previous years.

Waverley Gardens has prepared some Santa Snaps, pet pics and has so much more Christmas joy to spread!

This year Waverley Gardens also welcome you to have a family photo with your furry friend or dress up your pet for a photo with Santa with their Pet Photo Packs . 

Sensory Photos are also available to children who have physical or behavioural special needs but note that the spots for these are limited so it would be best to book ahead of time.

Santa is arriving at Westfield Southland and he can’t wait to take festive photos with you to remember this Christmas. 

This year, Westfield Southland have a range of photography sessions to suit everyone, with your choice of Family and friends, Sensitive Santa, Auslan Santa, and Pet photography .

All children who visit Santa will also receive a snowflake crown to take home.

Auslan Santa is a pilot program offering children who use Auslan as their primary form of communication, the chance to share their Christmas wishlist directly with an Auslan-fluent Santa. Developed in collaboration with Deaf Australia, the sessions will be longer and will have helpers and an interpreter on hand to facilitate.

In the Sensitive Santa experience families can have a photo taken in a relaxed environment, tailored to children with sensory challenges. Parkmore Shopping Centre is a well-loved favourite Santa Photo location for locals in Keysborough in Melbourne’s south-east.

Photos are taken inside the Santa house/set, located next to Best & Less. Online bookings are required so make sure you get in early.

Capture joyful candid moments with Santa and grab the perfect festive family photo at Chadstone ! Unfortunately all bookings sold out really quickly this year but Chadstone have advised that you should keep checking daily because many people need to cancel their sessions so you might still be able to snap one up.

Santa Photography is $49.00 (inc. GST) per booking. You must be, or become, a Chadstone First member to book Santa Photography . Chadstone First members receive email updates about the latest offers, event details and news of what is happening in-centre.

Online bookings are essential, no walk ups available.

Bring the whole family along with any of your pets to get a Photo with Santa at Kew Court House while helping raise money for a wonderful local charity!

Photos with Santa will cost $25 and include digital files that will be emailed to you a week after the photoshoot. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Inclusion Foundation that advocates for the inclusion of children and young people with Down Syndrome through two innovative programs.

Is it your baby’s first Christmas? Be sure to snap their pic with Santa during the Baby’s First Christmas Photos at Woodgrove which is crafted to encapsulate the perfect seasonal snap of your little bub. On top of this, parents are given extra time during the ten-minute session so they can prepare your mini-me for the perfect shot.

Highpoint Shopping Centre will be the first Melbourne centre to launch Santa Photography, kicking off Saturday 4 November .

With more time to capture those special moments, Santa Photos at Highpoint will host the longest photography hours in Melbourne this season, operating 12 to 13 hours daily until Christmas Eve. Pet Photography and Sensitive Santa will also be running with increased availability and comfortability, offering an easier and more inclusive experience for the whole family (even your furry friends!).

David Jones in Adelaide has been slammed for a new move that really isn’t feeding the Christmas cheer.

The department store will now be charging parents for their kids to take a photograph with the resident Santa Claus at the Central Plaza store.

For the first time in 126 years, the Magic Cave requires a booking, meaning families will be turned away if they can’t present proof of payment.

Two 4x6 images now cost $24.95, with a pricier option called “Santa’s Gift Pack” costing $49.95.

The move to charge families has sparked outrage on social media, with several locals accusing David Jones of being a “grinch”.

“[That is] just plain mean,” one person wrote.

“Pure greedy,” said another. “Boycott David Jones and go to your suburban Santas.”

“Tis the season to make money any way you can,” someone else said.

“Yeah thought that was weird when I booked in a week ago and it was forcing [me] to choose a photo package,” another said.

“Not a big deal considering I want to share the photos, however hardly in the spirit. Terrible PR upcoming. Massive miss.”

A busy metro shopping centre was evacuated and the riot squad stepped in after a suspicious item was found.
