Whether you’re a local or coming from further afield, the glamping in Hertfordshire which I’ve listed here should provide you with a welcome respite from everyday life – the chance to unwind and relax in tranquil – and sometimes unusual – surroundings.

There are some fantastic days out in Hertfordshire, from country estates to farms and parks along with some beautiful rural walks and plenty of pretty villages and country pubs. Hertfordshire glamping offers visitors the best of both worlds – plenty of interesting things to do close by, but peaceful countryside to retreat to at the end of a busy day.

Bell tent glamping in Hertfordshire at Hill Farm

Hill Farm camping and glamping is in a brilliant location close to Wendover Woods in the Chiltern Hills. There is fantastic scenery for walking and biking in this part of Hertfordshire.

The farm has bell tents which come with everything you could possibly need for a glamping break. Aside from comfy beds and enough space for extra beds if you have a large brood, there are solar fairy lights, family games and rugs to make it feel cosy.

Bell tent glamping in Hertfordshire at Hill Farm

As well as bell tents, it’s also possible to hire normal tents pre-erected to save you the time and hassle of bringing your own. I’m sure my family would camp more frequently if we weren’t put off by all the packing and unpacking involved with camping. This option is also perfect if you don’t want to pay for a glamping experience but you would like to keep your camping experience easy. These tents come complete with camp beds plus outside table and chairs so visitors just need to bring bedding and cooking facilities.

  • Bell tents sleeping up to 6 guests
  • Shared toilet / shower facilities
  • Bedding provided
  • Kitchenware provided for cooking on the BBQ
  • Dogs are permitted

The Croft Farm

Glamping in Great Gaddesden near Hemel Hempstead

Outdoor hot tub in hertfordshire

This glamping site near Hemel started off as a music and arts festival destination. Today it’s the perfect place for a Hertfordshire hot tub glamping experience. Croft Farm is located just outside the little village of Great Gaddesden, not far from the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery.

Croft Farm features several different glamping options made from reclaimed materials. The Jumble – formally the DJ’s cabin at the music festival – is a cosy space with quirky furnishings and far reaching views across the countryside. The owners have also converted an old caravan and a campervan to create fun sleeping spaces for their guests. Other glamping options are also in the pipeline – updates to follow.

This Hertfordshire glamping site is perfect for anyone looking for Harry Potter themed accommodation. North Hill Farm is a short drive from the Warner Bros Studios and -although it’s in the countryside – it’s also within walking distance (just) of a tube station, making it a great base from which to explore the capital.

Harry Potter themed glamping in Hertfordshire

Anyone with a love of Harry Potter will find it very tricky to choose between staying in Hagridd’s Hideaway or Owl’s Lookout. Hagridd’s Hideaway looks very similar to the hut in the movies – but with far more mod-cons, while Owl’s Lookout comes complete with a slide as your back door exit!

Harry Potter themed glamping in Hertfordshire

As well as the Harry Potter themed places to stay, there’s also camping in the fields and some brilliant adults only glamping units too.

There are walking trails directly from the farm in the beautiful Chiltern Hills and there are plenty of fun days out close by including the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden and Bekonscot Model Village at Beaconsfield.

  • 5 well equipped glamping units, sleeping 2 to 6 guests
  • En-suite facilities
  • Cooking facilities

Church Farm Ardeley

Glamping near Stevenage

Bell tent Hertfordshire glamping at Church Farm Ardeley

Church Farm is somewhere we used to regularly visit when our children were toddlers. There are lots of animals to feed, farm walks, and always plenty of mud.

The farm has a café which serves particularly good cake – I used to love coming here in those sleep deprived early days of parenthood when sugar and caffeine were an essential part of my day. There’s also a very good farm shop, a woodland play area and a pub next door.

colourful signposts in farm woodland

Church Farm offers both camping and glamping. There are wooden cabins and bell tents which are hidden among the trees – with plenty of space between each one. There’s also space for a tent or two if you need extra sleeping space.

The rural nature of the location means that wildlife is frequently spotted – a deer or a fox might wander past your door. Glamping at Church Farm is perfect for children – lots of space to run around and delicious local produce to cook over your campfire.

  • Wooden cabins (sleep up to 4) and bell tents (sleep up to 5)
  • Campfires (extra charge)
  • Composting toilets (flush toilets available at the farm)
  • Units come with beds and guests can pay extra for bedding

Radwell Lake Glamping

Glamping near Baldock

Radwell Mill campsite in North Hertfordshire currently has just one glamping unit – a Mongolian yurt – but more glamping is planned. The yurt is positioned in woodland next to Radwell Lake, a peaceful secluded position.

The yurt sleeps two and comes fully equipped with everything you could possibly need – there’s a fridge and a gas cooker plus a wood burning stove which ensures you’ll be toasty warm even in winter.

Although this is the perfect place to relax amid rural surroundings, Radwell glamping is less than an hour from Cambridge and there are some lovely towns and villages to explore close by such as pretty Ashwell and the market town of Hitchin.

  • One Mongolian yurt (sleeps 2)
  • Private toilet and shower room close by
  • Proper bed and bedding provided
  • Dogs permitted

Guilden Gate

Glamping near Royston

Guilden Gate Smallholding is the place to go glamping in Hertfordshire if you’re keen to learn more about sustainable living. The property is a zero CO2 emissions site – visitors are invited to take a tour of the smallholding to discover how this type of living is possible. The house has been built with sustainable materials; there are chickens, beekeeping and an orchard. Solar and wind power are the main sources of energy along with a woodland which provides fuel to heat the property.

There are two glamping options at Guilden Gate – the Coppice Woodland and the Secret Garden, both sound lovely.

The Coppice is a collection of buildings which is hired to one group at a time. Set amid two acres of woodland, there is a converted VW campervan and a wooden yurt which together can sleep up to six guests (some of the sleeping areas are just suitable for children). There are sheltered areas for cooking and dining as well as a fire pit. The bathroom consists of an open air wood-fired hot tub, a solar-powered shower and a state of the art composting toilet.

The Secret Garden is a cosy little Hobbit hole sleeping two guests which is set in a secluded garden of wild flowers and herbs. There’s a spacious covered eating area plus a swing pod and a hammock. The Secret Garden also has a wood fired hot tub, solar shower and composting toilet.

As well as glamping, the smallholding sells wood-carved furniture, veggie boxes and there’s a small vineyard in the pipeline too. This is the 21st century good life!

  • Two glamping units, one sleeping up to six guests, the other two
  • Open air cooking facilities
  • Private composting toilet and solar shower for each unit
  • Dogs not permitted

Daisy Cabin

Glamping near Buntingford

Hertfordshire glamping interior

This cosy wooden cabin in North Hertfordshire is perfect for couples seeking a romantic retreat in rural surroundings. The spacious cabin comes complete with a kitchen, wood burning stove and en-suite shower room. There’s a large decking area where guests can sit and take in the views over the orchards and there are plenty of walks directly from the farm.

The open plan living space has been thoughtfully laid out with plenty of cosy touches such as comfortable armchairs, rugs and throws. The cabin is solar powered and built mostly from reclaimed materials. However, the shower is gas powered so you’re guaranteed a hot shower!

Cambridge is half an hour’s drive but if you would prefer to stay local the village of Cottered is a 20 minute walk away – there’s a good pub there for Sunday roasts. Also nearby is the lovely old windmill at Cromer reached via winding country roads. This is a great area for bike rides too – I love this part of Hertfordshire.

  • One cabin sleeping two guests
  • Private en-suite shower room

Westmill Farm has several fishing and swimming lakes – one has an inflatable assault course during the summer months. There’s also golf, high ropes, climbing and Segways. If the weather is against you, there’s also an indoor soft play area and a great art centre.

  • Guests bring own bedding
  • Shared toilet and shower facilities

Toad Abode Glamping

Glamping in Widford near Ware

Glamping shepherds hut in Hertfordshire

This is a back to basics camping and glamping experience in a beautiful spot next to the River Ash in East Hertfordshire. There’s currently just one glamping option – the hand-crafted Toad’s Hut – which sleeps two. Everyone else needs to bring their own tent or campervan.

This low impact camping and glamping site uses solar energy and has composting toilets. Fresh eggs are available from the resident chickens and guests are welcome to try foraging food around the site.

Close by is the brilliant Henry Moore Studios and Gardens – a really outstanding open air art museum showcasing the best of this 20th century sculptors work. Despite being only around 15 miles from London, this part of Hertfordshire is particularly tranquil and rural – it’s a great area to escape to if you’d like a peaceful weekend away. There are some fantastic walks and bike rides available directly from the campsite.

  • One hut sleeping two (camping also available)
  • Composting toilet
  • Bring your own drinking water

Foxholes Farm Glamping

Glamping near Hertford

Glamping safari tent in Hertfordshire at Foxholes Farm

Foxholes Farm breeds cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. It’s a great place to visit with children – there’s lots to see and there are plenty of walks around the farm to enjoy. There’s an excellent farm shop selling a great range of local produce (I always enjoy visiting the cheese counter) and there’s also a little café with an enclosed play area for young children.

If you like to have plenty of space for yourself when you’re glamping and you don’t want to rough it, Foxholes is a great choice. There’s just one safari lodge at this farm near Hertford so you’ll have the whole place to yourselves.

There are two bedrooms, a living / dining room with log fired stove plus a children’s play area and a bathroom with a roll top bath and flushing toilet. Outside, there’s a BBQ and a hot tub. On arrival you’re provided with a cream tea. This pretty much ticks all the boxes for a wonderful, luxury weekend away I think.

  • One luxury 2 bedroom safari lodge sleeping up to 6 guests (more glamping units are planned)
  • En-suite bathroom with tub
  • Hot tub (extra charge)

Home Farm Glamping

Glamping near Elstree

Home Farm Glamping is a very well thought out and slick operation and also a family business. It has the glam of London but the surroundings of a rural farm. If you fancy a weekend away in the country, staying in a pretty bell tent, this ticks the box but there’s also an impressive range of activities on offer from archery to yoga should you require more than a campfire to keep you entertained.

There are yurts or bell tents to choose from which can sleep up to five guests. The tents are spread out across a spacious meadow. Each of the 12 units is well equipped with beds and bedding and attractive touches such as a mirror, books, rugs and cushions. All tents come with their own decking area, a BBQ and a fire pit. Everything has been thought of – matches, milk, washing up liquid, the lot!

Each tent comes with its own BBQ and firepit but if you’d like to do more extensive cooking there’s a communal barn with a shared kitchen. However, the big draw of this Hertfordshire glamping site is the on-site catering company Sainlo Events. You can pre-order cooked breakfasts, fancy afternoon teas (with Prosecco) and BBQ meal boxes, there are vegetarian and vegan options too – so you really can have a proper holiday with meals taken care of.

Home Farm is an arable farm with meadows, woodland and lakes to explore. Aldenham Country Park is just down the road and the Warner Bros Studios for Harry Potter fans is a short drive away. Stanmore tube and Elstree and Borehamwood train station are within a couple of miles of the farm with taxis on hand if you don’t fancy the walk.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, and they're all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

safari tents hertfordshire

  • Sleeps: 2-6 per tent
  • Bedrooms: 1-2 per tent
  • Bathrooms: 1 per tent
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights

You can expect a warm welcome at By the Wye, a naturally luxurious, wildlife-steeped glamping site nestled on the border of England and Wales. Plan a fresh air-filled escape from everyday life… and as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll be surrounded by comfort and luxury of just about every description.

First, there’s the dream-like location; the family-run site is nestled amongst four acres of ancient, unspoilt woodland on the Wye riverbanks. Partly designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, your friendly neighbours will include owls, dormice, badgers, bats, newts… and even the occasional otter!

Then there’s the off-grid, eco-friendly accommodation, especially designed to have minimal impact on the surrounding area. A range of thoughtfully positioned safari tents, sleeping between two to six guests, are gently elevated on stilts… so you get to sleep in the tree canopy, under a blanket of softly twinkling stars, and each comes with its own uniqueness.

Cwtch, for example, has a panoramic cedar barrel wood-fired sauna installed on the lower decking along with a fabulous outdoor shower. The sauna floats out above the woodland floor, offering breath-taking views of the river Wye below through the floor-to-ceiling glass end. Imagine lying in your private sauna, basking in the warmth, listening to the gentle crackle of the fire and watching kingfishers, herons and the occasional otter go by. For wellness lovers, this will truly be a unique sauna experience.

Meanwhile, Holly has an additional deck at the rear that has been transformed into a haven of tranquillity. On this private clearing in the woods there is a rainfall shower right beneath the trees, a hammock to while away the hours reading, and a dreamy outdoor bath where you can spend your evening soaking in the woods. For pure indulgence, private massages and reflexology treatments can be arranged, surrounded by just birdsong and the rustle of the trees.

River, the newest and largest of the collection, sleeps up to six guests.  Dreamily elevated right above the river Wye (hence the name!) you will wake up to incredible morning views, especially when enjoyed from the furnished decking.  Wheelchair-friendly and especially adapted for guests with limited mobility, there’s an indulgent wet-room style bathroom and a relaxed open-plan living space to unwind in all together.

The inviting safari tents at By The Wye sleep up to six people, but if you are looking for larger accommodation, there is a tree-top walkway connecting two of our safari tents; The Ivy and Meadow, so if you are a family group of (up to) ten people, this could be an ideal option for your next group glamping holiday.

At a glance

  • A luxurious, off-grid glamping site, family-run and perfectly positioned amongst four acres of unspoilt, wildlife-rich woodland on the banks of the River Wye.
  • The Cwtch – for couples, sleeps 2 in kingsize bed.
  • Holly and Meadow sleep up to 5. Kingsize bed in open plan living space, plus one bedroom with double and single above
  • River sleeps up to 6.  Wheelchair-friendly with ramped access and adaptations, 2 bedrooms with double and twin beds, kingsize bed in open-plan living space.
  • Ash and The Ivy sleep up to 5. 2 bedrooms, one with double, one with double and single above.
  • Meal boxes and fully tailored breaks are available on request – just ask!
  • There’s also the option of booking a scout-style tent on the decking of the main safari tent, for extra guests or to enjoy a more back-to-basics experience, or you can book The Ivy and Meadow for parties of up to 10.
  • The town of Hay-on-Wye is close by, and there’s plenty of fresh air adventure to be had in the surrounding area, from the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons National Park, to Offa’s Dyke. There is also onsite fishing available.

Accommodation Options

More information.

You’ll also enjoy the benefits of a fully equipped kitchen – with a wood-burning stove and a welcome food hamper provided – and your own en-suite bathroom (well, this is glamping after all!) with piping hot running water, a flushing loo, and a power shower.

Head outside, to find an enchanting covered deck area that will help you make the most of those magnificent, shimmering river views. And if you’re in the mood for an al fresco supper, no problem. The picnic table and firepit (or barbecue) will help you welcome that blazing sunset in style.

If you’re in the mood for some extra pampering, there’s even a range of mouth-watering, locally sourced meal boxes available for your stay, from tasty breakfasts to barbecue banquets!

You can also accommodate any extra guests, or enjoy a more back-to-basics experience in nature, by booking a scout-style tent on the decking of the main safari tent. Simply bring sleeping bags, and a keen sense of adventure.

Speaking of adventure, you can get blissfully lost in exploring the beautiful Wye Valley, the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Black Mountains, or the mesmerising 8th century earthworks of Offa’s Dyke – the choice is utterly yours.  Closer to home, there is fishing available onsite, so it is the ideal venue for a relaxing fishing break.

Meanwhile, Hay-on-Wye, the famous town of books, is a mere stone’s throw away from the site, and there’s a soul-soothing plethora of restaurants, cafés, tea rooms, delis, and farmers’ markets close by, that promise to transport you to straight to foodie heaven.

We can’t imagine you’re going to need any more convincing to book a stay at By the Wye… so as the Welsh say, “brysiwch” (hurry up) and claim your favourite tent!

Things to note

Check in from 3 – 5pm, check out by 10am. Choose from a 3 night stay (Fri-Mon), a 4 night stay (Mon-Fri) or a 7 night stay (Mon-Mon or Fri-Fri).  In low season, 2 night stays are possible for check-ins on Mon, Wed or Fri.  The site is in a protected natural area, so you will be provided with eco-friendly, chemical-free bathroom and washing-up products – please don’t bring your own.

Where you'll be staying

Hay-on-wye, herefordshire, what the guests of by the wye say.

“We spent a fabulous weekend here during the Summer and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a break to get away from it all but still enjoy the comforts of home! The welcome basket on arrival was a lovely touch and Edith was on hand to deal with any queries we had. We ordered a meat pack which was so generous it lasted us two nights! We really enjoyed cooking this on the firepit/bbq and finishing off toasting some of the marshmallows from the welcome basket. Hay-on-Wye is only a short walk away and after venturing in on a hot afternoon we were very glad to be able to jump into the river for some wild swimming to cool off once we were back to our tent.”

“I’m not usually one for going anywhere I can’t plug in a hairdryer but we stayed in one the safari tents earlier this year and were so well catered for I didn’t even notice! Very comfortable beds, a power bank and local welcome hamper (including the best crisps I’ve ever had…I actually ordered a box to arrive when I got home) all await. I’d also recommend a BBQ box, it was ready and waiting for us in our cool box and was super tasty. What’s also brilliant is that, although you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, you’re actually only a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. Perfect location and a really lovely stay.”

Come Free Range With Us

Welcome to Drovers Rest, our 16 th Century Organic Farm, near Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire. In 2010, we left the corporate world of London to buy a farm and start a business in the sticks, and we love it. We are South African and have created a touch of Africa in the Hills. Now there’s no need to go all the way to the plains of the Savannah to go on Safari or to experience posh living in Safari tents. We have it all here.

With a passion for wildlife, doing our bit for the planet and food grown the proper way, our mission is to re-wild our land, ourselves and to give you a taste of it too. We hope you love what we have created.

We’re super dog friendly and are tucked away at the foothills of the Black Mountains in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire, right on the border of Wales surrounded by 200 acres of fields, forest and farm with a bubbling brook running through, off the beaten track yet only a stones throw from our village Hay on wye, famous for it’s Literary Festival and book shops, where culture and coffee shops await. That’s if you can tear yourself away from the farm!

The best wall tents with stove are a necessity during camping trips and especially in the back country. I live in a canvas wall tent six to seven weeks a year while hunting elk, deer and bear in the Idaho Wilderness. I designed the Wilderness canvas wall tent based on my tenting experience of 50 years. All canvas wall tents and stoves have been thoroughly tested in the harshest weather conditions.

WALL TENT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT SIZE OF CANVAS WALL TENT DO I NEED?

Sleeping capacity vs tent size info guide provides diagrams with bed, stove and table. The different tent sizes shown will give an indication of what size of tent is required. If you prefer more room go one size larger.

WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF CANVAS TREATMENT?

Water and mildew treatment is normally applied to most canvas wall tents. However, less expensive canvas wall tents have no treatments applied. This non-treated canvas will shrink 8-12 % compared to 1-2 % for water and mildew treated wall tent. Therefore, I don't recommend purchasing any wall tent that is not treated.  Fire treatment can be added to any water and mildew treated canvas.  If your budget allows I recommend the fire, water and mildew treated canvas. The fire treated canvas is not totally fire proof. A continuous heat source or flame will cause the fire treated canvas to burn.  However, once the flame or heat source is removed the canvas will stop burning. To me, fire treatment is a form of insurance. However, remember no treatment is fire proof.  Always keep any item that can cause a fire a minimum of 2 feet from the canvas, Rich, owner.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO SET UP A CANVAS WALL TENTS?

One person can easily set up a 8x10 or 10 x 12.    Two people can easily set up a 12 x14 or 14 x16. Two people for a 16 x 20 or 16 x 24  but it is much more difficult. Three people is much better. We have videos that show tent set up and our products.  Set up is very easy using a steel frame.

WHAT IS SUNFORGER?

Sunforger is a type of treatment that provides water and mildew resistance. It is not a type of canvas.   Based upon my experience selling sunforger treated canvas, it is effective, but not superior to other types of water mildew treatment.  More info at info guide at   Sunforger Treatment.

WHAT PROCEDURES ARE NECESSARY TO PREVENT WALL TENT WOOD STOVE FIRE DANGERS DURING VERY HIGH WINDS?

Certain precautions are required if you plan on using a wall tent wood stove in a high wind area or if there is a possibility of high wind gusts.

I always wire the stove pipe damper to a stove side shelf hole in the event of high winds.  This wiring prevents the first stove pipe from becoming detached from the wood stove.

Based on my personal experience, high winds will cause stove pipe to become detached from the top of the stove or the higher stove pipes become detached.

When I was on a camping trip there were mild winds one night when I was in my wall tent. I was just getting into bed when a sudden high wind blast started that continued for 5-10 minutes. My cooking table against the back wall almost blew over.  After I got the table with all four legs back on the ground I turned around. On my stove the second stove pipe had become loose.  Flames were shooting out the top of the first pipe.  Fortunately, I keep heavy leather gloves near my stove. I reconnected the first stove pipe back together.  Shortly thereafter the outside second and third stove pipe became disconnected.  I reconnected these pipes. I went back inside the wall tent and had to reconnect the first and second pipes 2 more times until the high wind gusts stopped.

Fortunately, I had wired the stove pipe damper to my stove side shelf holes or the first stove pipe would have become detached during this real life fire drill.

The pipes coming loose inside the tent was very dangerous with flames shooting out the pipes. Remember, a fire treated tent is not fire proof.  A continual flame will cause canvas to burn or a synthetic wall tent to melt. This high wind gust situation could have destroyed my tent and ended my hunting trip.

To prevent wall tent stove pipes from coming loose tie a wire on both sides of your damper and secure wire to a side shelf hole on your stove.  Use metal screws to attach all pipes together. Secure pipes 2, 3 and 4 together with metal screws and slide pipes from the outside through the stove jack hole. Use metal screws to secure stove pipes 1 and 2 together.  Recommend you set your stove up at home initially to insure there are no problems at the campsite.

Hopefully, my recommendations and real life experience with a wood stove during high winds will help you in future camping expeditions, Rich.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC WALL TENTS?

1.  Breathability:  Compared to natural materials like canvas, synthetic fabrics do not breathe as well. This can lead to increased condensation inside the tent, especially in humid conditions.

 2.  Heat Retention:  Synthetic materials do not have the same insulating properties as natural fabrics like canvas. This will result in wall tents heating up more quickly in direct sunlight and being less effective at retaining warmth in cooler temperatures.

 3.  UV Degradation:   Synthetic fabrics are susceptible to UV degradation over time. Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause the material to weaken and lose its color, reducing the lifespan of the tent.

 4.  Environmental Impact:   Some synthetic materials, particularly those derived from petroleum-based sources, have a higher environmental impact compared to natural materials. They may not be as biodegradable and the production process can contribute to pollution.

 5.  Less Aesthetic Appeal:  While aesthetics are subjective, some campers prefer the natural and classic appearance of canvas wall tents over the more modern and synthetic look of some materials.

 6.  Noise:  Synthetic materials can be noisy in windy conditions. Synthetic fabrics are much lighter than canvas and flap in the wind much more. The flapping of the fabric is much louder compared to the quieter rustling of natural materials.

 7.  Water Resistance:  While many synthetic fabrics are treated to be water-resistant, this treatment can wear off over time, especially with exposure to sunlight and weathering. Repeated use will require reapplication of water-resistant coatings.

 8.  Potential for Condensation:  Synthetic materials will cause condensation inside the tent particularly if the tent is not well-ventilated. Condensation can be an issue in cold weather, leading to damp conditions inside the tent.  Below freezing conditions will cause this condensation to freeze inside the wall tent.

 9.  Flammability:  Some synthetic materials are more flammable than natural materials. It's important to follow safety guidelines and keep open flames away from wall tents. Synthetic materials normally very quickly when in contact with a heat source.

 10.  Cost:  High quality synthetic materials with advanced features can sometimes be more expensive than basic canvas tents.

Despite these disadvantages, some campers find synthetic wall tents to be a  convenient choice. Especially when considering factors like weight and quick drying. The best choice depends on individual preferences, intended use and the specific requirements of the camping or glamping experience.

HOW DO I SET UP A CANVAS WALL TENT?   Our detailed  video   shows how to set up a tent over the wall tent frame. Remember, your tent should not fit over the frame tightly.  A tight fitting tent weakens seams and can cause canvas to tear. If your tent is tight determine how much you need to cut down your frame. If unsure, call for assistance. We will be glad to help you even if you purchased a tent elsewhere, Rich.

Materials Needed:

  • Wall tent with frame
  • Tent stakes or anchors
  • Ground tarp or commonly called floor (optional)
  • Mallet or hammer
  • Guy, rope lines

Set up Steps:

1.  Select a Suitable Location:  Ensure the ground is level and free of rocks, sticks, and debris.  If possible, choose a site that allows for natural drainage to prevent water pooling around the tent.

2.  Lay Down a Ground Tarp (optional):  Unfold the ground tarp or floor and position it where you plan to set up the tent. The tarp should be slightly smaller than the footprint of your tent to prevent water form collecting between the tarp and the tent floor.

3.  Assemble the Frame:  Lay out all the frame components according to location of assembly.  Connect frame parts.  Assemble complete frame except legs on one side.

4.   Place Tent to the Frame :  Drape canvas wall tent over frame. Drape tarp or rainfly over the top of the tent. Raise the frame and assemble remaining legs.

5.  Secure the Corners:  Check that each corner of the tent is properly aligned with frame corners.

6.  Stake Down the Tent:  Start with the corners and stake them into the ground at a 45-degree angle. Use a  hammer to drive the stakes into the ground securely. Maintain some tension on the tent fabric as you stake it down to prevent sagging.

7.  Tension the Tent:  Adjust the eave guy lines with tensioners to achieve proper tension in the tent fabric. Tensioning is crucial for stability and weather resistance. Tighten the guy lines gradually moving around the tent to ensure even tension.

8.  Secure the Rainfly (if applicable):  Stake down the rainfly to keep it taut and ensure proper water runoff.

9.  Adjust and Fine-Tune:  Walk around the wall tent, inspecting for any sagging or unevenness. Make minor adjustments as needed to achieve a taut and even pitch.

10.  Ridge Guy Lines If Necessary:  Attach ridge guy lines for high winds. Stake these lines out at a 45-degree angle, creating additional stability, especially in windy conditions.

Practicing setting up your tent at home before your trip will make this process much smoother in the great outdoors.

SHOULD I BUY A 10 oz or 12 oz CANVAS  WALL TENT?

As the owner of Wall Ten Shop, I am often asked if it is best to buy 10 or 12 oz canvas.  I prefer 10 oz wall tents. Some companies will try to upsell the more expensive 12 oz canvas.  BEWARE. My outfitter customers do not buy 12 oz canvas wall tents despite using their tents for months in extreme weather conditions.  Outfitters tell me the extra cost and extra weight is not worth it. A 10 oz canvas wall tent with a fly will last decades.  Costs less and is a much better system than than the 12 oz canvas.

If you want a 12 oz wall tent I sell the Montana Canvas tents 5% below Montana retail with free shipping.  The Montana 12 oz tents are the best available, top quality, with a great warranty for workmanship, Rich.

The choice between a 10 oz canvas tent and a 12 oz canvas wall tent depends on various factors, and both options have their advantages and considerations. Here are some factors to help you decide.

10 Ounce Canvas Tent

1.   Weight:

  • A 10 oz canvas wall tent is significantly lighter than a 12 oz tent. If you prioritize portability and plan to move the tent frequently, a lighter option may be more suitable.

2.  Breathability:

  • Lighter canvas tends to be more breathable. This can be an advantage in warmer weather, as it allows for better air circulation inside the tent, reducing the risk of condensation.

3.  Ease of Handling:

  • Due to its lighter weight, a 10 oz canvas tent is easier to handle during setup and takedown. This can be particularly beneficial if you prefer a  canvas wall tent that is quick and straightforward to manage.

12 Ounce Canvas Tent

1.  Durability:

  • A 12 oz canvas tent is generally more robust and durable than a 10 oz tent.

2.  Insulation:

  • Heavier canvas provides better insulation.  However, no canvas provides much insulation. The tent basically keeps the wind out.  When the stove goes out the temperature on the inside is about the same as the outside.

3.  Sturdiness:

  • The additional weight of a 12 oz canvas wall tent can contribute to minimum increased stability and sturdiness.

Considerations:

1.  Intended Use:

  • Consider the specific conditions and environments where you plan to use the tent. If you prioritize weight and breathability for warm weather camping, a 10 oz tent is sufficient.

2.  Budget:

  • Heavier wall tents are more expensive. Consider your budget and whether the added durability and features of a 12 oz wall tent align with your budget and justify the higher cost.

3.  Personal Preferences:

  • Your personal preferences and camping style play a crucial role. Some campers prioritize a lightweight and breathable tent.

In summary, if weight, breathability, and ease of handling are your primary concerns, a 10 oz canvas tent may be suitable. Do what is best for you.  Assess your specific needs, the intended use of the tent and your personal preferences to make an informed decision.

  TESTIMONIALS

Bought a wilderness 12 x14 wall tent and stove 20 years ago from you. Awesome tent has held up and kept us warm in some harsh Michigan deer camp weather. Been in heavy snowstorms, -20 actual temperatures and extreme wind and rainstorms over the years. Does not leak at all and has been outstanding. Thank you. With that being said I was wondering if I buy the the cook shack for it how do I get a rain fly for both of them. The tent and cook shack? Also can I use mild dish soap to clean it up or no? What is your recommendation? Thanks again. I really love it and it has served us well. Terry.

There is no comparison in price and quality in any canvas tent I have ever seen compared to your Wilderness tent. You definitely have the best wall tents available. Mark. I have a couple outfitter friends and both recommended your outdoor canvas tents for the quality and the additional free features that other companies do not normally include. When outfitters recommend your products, that is good enough for me. I want to order a 16x20. John. FEDEX misplaced my package. Instead of waiting for FEDEX to find my lost box you guys sent out another canvas wall tent immediately to insure I received it before I left for elk camp. I really appreciate your customer service. I have never been taken care of better. Lewis.

Wall Tent Shop is very proud of our customer service. Read hundreds of testimonials from satisfied customers.

We Went To Georgia Safari Conservation Park & Here's What We Thought Of It

G eorgia Safari Conservation Park in Madison, GA, is now open and ready for your visit! This amazing park features exotic and endangered animals, safari tours, animal encounters, and some of the most unique lodging in the state.

Although a visit to Georgia Safari Conservation Park will make you feel worlds away, it’s located less than an hour from Atlanta, right off I-20, in Madison, GA. We loved our visit here, and we know you will too.

Georgia Safari Conservation Park

The thing about the new Georgia Safari Conservation Park is that…it’s not what you’re thinking it is. If you’ve ever visited any other safari park in Georgia, and you’re thinking this may be similar, let me assure you — it is not.

Georgia Safari Conservation Park is SO much better.

This is a place that puts the animals first and foremost. Here, you can learn from the experts who work with them, see the animals roaming the grasslands and pastures, get opportunities to meet some of their smaller animals, and stay in some of the most unique lodging in the entire southeast.

I had high expectations before visiting, and this place and the people who work here exceeded them.

Georgia Safari Conservation Park is a 530-acre park, and currently 286 acres are being used — mostly for the grassland pastures. You’ll find Safari Tours, VIP Tours, Animal Encounters, and so much more.

Here’s everything you need to know about Georgia Safari Conservation Park in Madison.

Safari Tours

One of the biggest draws to Georgia Safari Conservation Park is their drive-through Safari Tours — for good reason. You’ll find 230 acres of grassland pastures here, where you will be able to see both exotic and endangered animals roaming and interacting with each other. The safari tours here are designed to feel like a visit to a true African game drive, and I think they get the job done.

The drive-through Safari Tours here take place in custom safari vehicles, which are amazing. During your tour, you won’t just be observing…you’ll also be learning. Animal care experts lead these tours, and they know what they’re talking about. We learned so much about the animals here, about why they were chosen, about what life is like for them at the park, and about the future plans the animal care team has for them.

During our summer afternoon visit, we saw ostriches, bison, rhinos, Asian water buffalo, eland, zebra, and bongo…just to name a few. Some of the animals were roaming the grasslands, some were seeking shade amongst the trees, some were enjoying water, and all of them seemed unbothered by our visit.

Our Safari Tour was led by Animal Care Specialist, Tiffany Portillo, and it was awesome hearing everything she had to share about the animals — including ALL their names! We loved that different species had different themed names. We didn’t just see an ostrich…we saw Barbara the ostrich. (Who prefers the nickname, Babs…obviously.)

It was clear during our visit that this park is all about respecting the animals and giving them the best possible care. These animals are loved and known and taken care of in the most amazing way. It was really inspiring to see. We became so attached to the animals we saw, that we’re already planning a return visit so we can see how they grow.

There are several different Safari Tour options for you, from group tours to private VIP tours. All tours allow children 2 and under to ride FREE on the lap of a guardian. Reservations are recommended and tours operate rain or shine.

  • Guided Safari Tour – This is a 1.5-hour group tour in a safari vehicle with expert guides that will take you through the wildlife savanna. Cost: $39 / person
  • Safari Encounter Tour – This 2.5-hour tour is an up-close giraffe and rhino encounter that offers a truly unforgettable journey, filled with education, wonder, and incredible memories for the whole family. Cost: $125/person
  • Private VIP Tour  – This private 3-hour tour includes up-close encounters with some of nature’s most extraordinary animals. You’ll enjoy a private safari trip, hands-on encounters with some of the park’s smaller creatures, and more.  Cost: $2500 per 8-person jeep

Georgia Safari Conservation Park Lodging

Luxury Safari Tents

The 2-bedroom Luxury Safari Tents can sleep up to 4 people and feature decks that overlook a private savanna. They’re not using the word “luxury” as just an adjective here…they truly are luxurious.

These custom Safari Tents were made in Africa and shipped here, and no detail has been overlooked. You’ll find wooden floors and canvas walls, heating and air, luxurious furnishings and plush bedding, a spacious living and dining room, a kitchenette complete with a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee area, and more. These Luxury Safari Tents also have full bathrooms with soaker tubs and showers.

The primary bedroom offers a king-size bed with floor-to-ceiling picture windows, giving you a view of the animals roaming just outside. The secondary bedroom has two twin beds, which can be combined into a king bed. You’ll also find floor-to-ceiling windows here, so the animals are never far from view.

The decks are expansive and feature comfortable seating and a ceiling fan. There are binoculars for your use during your visit, so you can see the animals even when they’re further away.

We loved the TV here. I know that sounds strange, but in addition to watching your favorite shows, you can also use it to book tours at the park, or find out more information about the individual animals that call this park home.

Georgia Safari Conservation Park also offers an ADA-accessible 2-bedroom Safari Tent.

All 2-bedroom Luxury Safari Tent rentals require a 2-night minimum and include a…

Like the 2-bedroom Safari Tents, the 1-bedrooms feature wooden floors and canvas walls, heating and air, a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, and coffee station, living and dining areas, plush bedding, a full bathroom, and luxurious furnishings.

Additionally, you’ll find two private decks at the Honeymoon Hideaway. Adjacent to the bedroom, glass doors will take you to a private deck that includes a secluded outdoor bathing area with a private open-air bathtub. How cool is that?

Giraffe Suite

If you’re looking for one of the most unique accommodations in all of the Southeast, I think it’s got to be the Giraffe Suite at Georgia Safari Conservation Park.

This private suite offers guests the opportunity to live and sleep while overlooking the park’s 10,000-square foot giraffe and rhino barn — so you can fall asleep while watching the Park’s 1.5-year-old giraffe, Phoenix!

This lodging option is just as luxurious as the Safari Tents too — no detail have been overlooked. The Giraffe Suite can sleep 4. You’ll find a master bedroom with a kind-sized bed and panoramic views of Phoenix the giraffe. You’ll also find a full bathroom, a living room with a full-sized sleeper sofa, a dining room, and a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, and coffee station.

The remote controlled shades on the full-length windows overlooking the barn make privacy a breeze. You’ll also find a fun outdoor deck here, so if Phoenix decides to head outside, you can observe him from there as well.

We got to meet Phoenix and absolutely fell in love with him. He is the sweetest! Although he’s only 11-feet-tall now, this baby is going to keep growing. A stay in this suite while watching him would be the most memorable experience. The Giraffe Suite is for ages 12 and up.

Giraffe Suite rentals require a 2-night minimum stay and includes…

  • A private, guided safari tour in one of their VIP safari vehicles
  • A private, behind-the-scenes tour of our giraffe and rhino barn
  • A private, extended animal encounter with their amazing animal ambassadors

Cost: from $1,250/night

Other Things You Need to Know

  • Georgia Safari Conservation Park opened June 1, 2024, and they still have major plans in the works for the future. One of the Animal Care Specialists we spoke with said that big cats are part of their future plans.
  • We loved meeting Phoenix, the 1.5-year-old giraffe who was brought here from Texas. Phoenix is the cutest! Feeding him lettuce was a highlight for us.
  • It was clear during our visit that Animal Enrichment is a high priority for the team at Georgia Safari Conservation Park. In Phoenix’s barn, we saw enrichment toys that were made out of fire hoses that were donated by nearby counties (like Morgan County, Oconee County, and Athens-Clarke County), as well as treat puzzles, mirrors, and more.
  • The Animal Encounter with the Animal Ambassadors gave us an up-close look at some of the smaller animals at the Park. We met reptiles, tortoises, sugar gliders, a fennec fox, a bearded dragon, a chinchilla, and the cutest little possum you ever did see. Just like with the larger animals in the pastures, these animals all had names, and we got to learn so much about them. It was fascinating to see all of the Animal Enrichment activities they had for each animal — and we loved learning about how and why they were chosen to be at the park.
  • There aren’t currently dining options at the park (that’s in the future plans), but the Safari Park is located just a few minutes from downtown Madison, where you can find lots of great food options. We grabbed sandwiches from Madison Produce Company Deli and Provisions downtown and would do it again! It was so good. Betty Gene’s is another great downtown option that we’ll try next time. Although not downtown, Farmview Market is just up the street and definitely worth a stop.
  • Although the minimum age for staying in the Giraffe Suite is 12 years old, there is no age limit for stays in the Safari Tents.
  • ADA accessibility is a high priority here and you’ll find ADA-compliant touring options, encounters, and lodging options.

We had the best time during our visit to Georgia Safari Conservation Park and we truly can’t wait to see what the future holds for this wonderful park.

This guide gives four family-friendly and fun ways for camping and glamping in the county. Plus to get started, here are some best practices when camping and tips on what to avoid when camping from community guides reporter Maura Fox .

Guests gather near a campsite with at Campland on the Bay in Mission Bay. (Campland on the Bay)

Combine traditional camping with upscale and glamorous amenities — a pool, electricity or a comfy bed and pillow inside a tent — and that equals glamping. Here are three online marketplaces that offer glamping options and reservations with listings in San Diego County. Prices vary based on the time of year reserved, similar to hotels.

Meet the diehard tennis fans camped out in Wimbledon's epic "queue"

By Leah Mishkin

July 2, 2024 / 8:34 AM EDT / CBS News

London — Tennis fans around the world started tuning in Monday to watch the iconic Wimbledon tennis tournament as it got underway in the leafy southern corner of London where it's taken place since 1877. Millions of people will watch two weeks of grass court action on their screens — but far fewer will actually get to take in the sights and sounds in person, and being one of them is no small feat.

Wimbledon tickets are available online, but you have to register by a certain date and there are still no guarantees.

"They get snapped up so quickly," tennis fan Wendy Bartle told CBS News as she headed for the hallowed ground of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, or Wimbledon, as it's better known.

"This is the other way to do it," Bartle said as she joined thousand of others in the epic line — or The Queue, as it's known. "If you queue like this, you get really good seats."

Bartle and her friend Carol O'Hara, along with their sons, reached Wimbledon bright and early on opening day to pitch a tent. They wanted to be among the first 500 people in line for tickets on Tuesday morning.

TENNIS-GBR-WIMBLEDON

The tournament sells a total of 1,500 tickets per day for the three main courts, 500 seats for each court. For those who don't nab one of those tickets, there's a chance of securing a general admission grounds pass, but many will simply have to go home empty handed, or just linger outside to try and soak up some atmosphere.

Barle and O'Hara were among thousands of people who decided to spend the night outside to secure their place in the line. It can mean a lot of time to kill, but it's not unexpected, and most take it in their stride, even finding a welcome opportunity to unwind.

"That's what I quite enjoy," said O'Hara, who's joined the Wimbledon queue with her son every year for a decade. "We put the tents up. At some point we'll go and get some food… We take turns to go walk around the lake. I quite enjoy relaxing, read a book, chat — haven't seen Wendy in a while!"

Some people even buy local gym memberships so they can go and take a shower, but you have to be quick: You're only allowed to leave the line for 30 minutes at a time.

The camping isn't exactly survival in the great outdoors. It's a wealthy London suburb, after all, and Bartle said there are local restaurants and delivery services that cater to those camped out for tickets.

"You give your queue card number as the address," she explained, and the food comes straight to you. But little luxuries like that aside, it's still camping, and there's no lounging around in your sleeping bag until the late morning hours.

"You get woken up, is it five in the morning? Very early," said O'Hara. "They go [shakes tent] and then you have to go to the toilet, and there'll be a queue."

Yes, another queue.

But for the lucky — or the determined — the reward can be courtside seats and, this year, there's the added bonus of a chance to see one of Britain's own Wimbledon heroes in action for the last time.

Scottish two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray had back surgery just weeks before the tournament started and he's pulled out of the singles competition, but he will be competing in doubles matches.

The tournament runs until July 14.
