  • Eiffel Tower: Get a bird's-eye view of Paris from France ’s most iconic attraction.
  • Colosseum: This gladiatorial arena is the most thrilling of Rome 's ancient sights.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral: An 800-year-old Gothic Cathedral, Notre Dame is Paris’s most visited site.
  • Musée du Louvre: Showcasing thousands of art pieces, this is the world's largest museum.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City, Rome: This Renaissance church is Italy’s largest and most lavish basilica.
  • Palace of Versailles: Versailles is the French jewel in Europe's crown of culture and style.
  • Stonehenge: Walk in the footsteps of your ancestors at these prehistoric megaliths.
  • Trevi Fountain: Toss a coin in the fountain to ensure your return to the Eternal City.
  • Gain access to multiple attractions for one affordable price by investing in museum and city multi-access passes.
  • It’s always a good idea to take some basic medicines along with you on your European tour, as falling ill can be expensive.
  • Pack a change of clothes in your hand luggage when travelling on one of Europe’s low-cost airlines, as they offer great deals but are notorious for temporarily misplacing luggage.
  • If you’re travelling to a country that speaks a different language, impress the locals by learning the basics before you leave and taking a phrase book along with you.
  • Embassies often require additional paperwork to process your visa application, so make sure to apply at least 2 to 3 months before your European tour.
  • The best time for winter European holidays is from November to February, while May to October is ideal for a summer European tour.
  • South Africans habitually tip in almost every service situation, but in Europe the tip is often included in the bill or not expected at all. At most, round up to the nearest Euro — this will be widely appreciated.
  • The electricity in Europe matches South Africa’s 220 voltage supply, so while you may need a travel adapter for your European holidays, a voltage converter will not be necessary.
  • Visa’s Cash Passport is a great way to solve all your foreign exchange problems, as you can load up rands before you leave and top up online during your European trip.

Weather & Best Time to Visit Europe

Europe is a year round destination, but the weather is generally most pleasant from May to September.

Europe’s varied geography spans spans over 45 countries. Climates range from the sunny Greek isles to arctic Norwegian fjords. Each region has different weather, however in northern European countries (example - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK) December through March is very cold, with significant snowfall.

Southern European areas (example - Southern France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece) tend to boast sunny days almost year-round, with some rainfall in winter. The southern regions also have the hottest summers.

The more inland regions such as central Spain can become uncomfortably hot in July and August. Spring and fall are generally milder, though northern countries see plenty of rainfall and chilly temperatures.

You should also take note that July and August is a very busy period for Europe as most travellers take advantage of their vacation days and the fine weather. Crowds and and lines to popular attractions will peak during this time. On the other hand winter is also busiest time for Ski Resorts.

Best ways to travel through Europe

Traveling by train Most Europeans would agree that the cheapest way to travel through the many countries of the European continent is certainly by train. This  is because the railway infrastructure in Europe is very extensive and sophisticated. Some areas are only accessible by rail and rail journeys like the Glacier Express in Switzerland are a real treat to see.

Traveling by bus A popular way to travel for a tour of Europe would be a guided bus tour. These buses can be very luxurious and comfortable and can seat up to 50 people.

For those seeking to travel independently there is also an extensive network of a hop-on-hop-off bus called 'Busabout'. This service is most ideal for backpackers and can be a great alternative to the train. The bus stops at specific locations, normally at a hostel.

Traveling by car Self drive tours have become increasingly popular among South African citizens, especially in Ireland. You can collect your rental from almost any town or city across the continent and drive along a self made itinerary of your own design, staying at local guesthouses and hotels.

Make the most of your trip to Europe

With over 45 countries to choose from a trip to Europe might be a daunting trip to plan. If you are lucky enough to know exactly which destinations you want to see, then a tailored package with train travel should be the best way to go.

For younger travelers on a budget, we reccommend you consider joining a youth travel tour. These can range from accommodation from camping, to hostels, to hotels and even castles! Contact Africa Getaway for more information on how to plan a trip to Europe on a shoestring budget from South Africa.

TRAVEL TIPS

12 of the cheapest countries in Europe you can travel to

by Lianne Chin-Fook

Europe Clear Sea Beach

10 of the best Europe summer destinations you need to visit this year

Travel inspiration from six-two, frequently asked questions about europe.

Your search for ""

When is the best time to travel to Europe?

When is it NOT the best time to travel to Europe? No matter when you plan on visiting Europe, we’re sure you’ll love it!

Summer in Europe (between June to August) doesn’t need an introduction. Long sunny days, good gelato, breathtaking beach views - it’s Europe in all its glory. But for a springy touch, visit Europe during March and April - when flowers & fields are in full bloom and the temperature is still cool.

Winter in Europe is amazing too. Who wouldn’t love skiing down the Austrian Alps? Not to mention, fewer crowds and cheaper stays. And for chilly nights and vibrant shades of orange and red - visit Europe during October.

What are the best destinations to visit in Europe?

You really aren’t gonna ask us to choose, are you? This depends entirely on what you wanna see. But some of the must-do destinations in Europe would be Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, London, Prague, Rome, Ibiza and all the Alps! And guess what? We’ve got plenty of trips visiting all of these destinations for you to check out.

Do I need a visa to travel to Europe?

Your visa requirements can change according to your citizenship (and also according to the length and purpose of your visit). We always recommend that you check out our visa guide for more information.

What should I pack for a Europe trip?

Your passport, of course! But some other essentials would be:

• Comfortable shoes: There’s gonna be a lot of walking around • Light jacket: It tends to get quite windy • Crossbody bags: To carry all your stuff when you’re licking away that gelato

And the rest would depend on which season you’re arriving in Europe. Get loose, breathable clothes for summer, or thick jackets and multiple layers for winter.

Can I book online?

You certainly can! All of our trips are available to book online, just select your preferred travel date(s) and away you go. You can also book over the phone if you'd prefer.

How many days should I spend in Europe?

All your days. Just kidding (or are we?). This entirely depends on what you wanna do. We’ve got big trips, small trips, and everything in between. So if you’re looking for some inspo on how many days you should spend in Europe, check out our trips .

Is the tap water safe to drink in Europe?

Yep. You’ll be fine drinking tap water in most of Europe. But it’s always a good idea to double check with your Trip Manager if you’re doubtful.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You won’t have to worry about getting enough cash when you’re in Europe. Because ATMs in Europe are accessible as gelatos in Rome. Just stay wary of those sneaky ATM fees…

Is tipping customary in Europe?

Generally, tipping isn’t mandatory in Europe. And a lot of the time, service charges are included in the bill. But if you really like the food (which you will, you’re in Europe, after all) or service, leaving 5-10% is always appreciated.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're travelling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're travelling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my mobile phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your mobile phone while travelling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travellers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on travelling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognise this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay became the first Black rider to win a Tour de France stage on Monday.

Girmay said his sprint win in the mostly flat third leg was “for all Africans.”

“We must be proud now. We are really part of the big races,” he said. “Now it’s our moment. It’s our time.”

Before the podium celebration, Girmay went over and greeted Eritrean fans waving their country’s green, red and blue flag.

“There is a whole continent that has been waiting for this,” said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team. “It’s been done now, and I hope it will open the floodgates for more riders from Africa. He’s an ambassador in every way.”

Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish’s pursuit of a record-breaking 35th stage win was postponed by a crash ahead of him in the finale, and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz took the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar , making him the first Ecuadorean to lead cycling’s biggest race.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting h it in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Image

Also in 2022, Girmay became the first rider from a sub-Saharan country to win a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race .

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

The 231-kilometer (144-mile) leg from Piacenza to Turin — the longest stage of this Tour — provided the first chance for a mass sprint. There will be at least a handful of other opportunities for sprinters as the race prepares to cross back into France following the first four stages in Italy.

With time to start raising his arms before he crossed the line, Girmay finished just ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie.

Cavendish has been tied with Eddy Merckx on 34 wins for three years and put off retirement to try again this year to break the record.

Members of the Israel-Premier Tech team fell ahead of Cavendish, who crossed 113th but was given the same finishing time as Girmay as per rules that neutralize the times in case of crashes in the final five kilometers.

“I was just looking to stay up. I’m too little to see what’s going on but I could hear it,” Cavendish said. “Someone skidded and I was just waiting for someone to hit from behind. Luckily they didn’t and we kind of got through, but we were way off it and with 2.5K to go we were out of it. I don’t think anybody was seriously hurt and that’s the main thing.”

Cavendish complimented Girmay, who won a reduced sprint.

“That’s just massive. Cycling is massive in Eritrea. It’s super good for him and for African cycling,” Cavendish said. “He’s a legend, isn’t he?”

Pogacar dropped to second overall, with the same time as Carapaz.

Remco Evenepoel — the 2022 world champion and Spanish Vuelta winner — is third overall; and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is fourth, both also with the same time as Carapaz.

Danish rider Casper Pedersen had to abandon the race after falling with 15 kilometers to go and breaking his collarbone.

The race crosses back into France on Tuesday during Stage 4, the first big mountain leg going up to Sestriere and over the Col du Galibier — one of the Tour’s classic climbs — in the 140-kilometer (87-mile) route from Pinerolo to Valloire.

Pogacar, who won the Tour in 2020 and 2021, and Vingegaard will be favored to take the yellow jersey from Carapaz, who won the Giro in 2019 before taking gold in Tokyo three years ago.

“Tomorrow will be a big day,” Carapaz said. “It will be complicated. I’m going to try and give everything. I’m going to try and enjoy every single moment in the yellow jersey.”
