Biografia - Roger Hodgson

Roger's Music NEVER gets old !

Turning Stone Resort & Casino Showroom - Verona, NY - Wed, Nov 18, 2015

I have seen Roger Hodgson 7 times.......many friends think I'm crazy but I never enjoy a better show than Roger when it tours within diving distance of Rochester. I've seen him early on with only Aaron and him, with an orchestra, and with his band. His voice is still incredible and still manages to reach those high octaves which is signature for many of his songs. This particular show my wife and I had front row seats and felt like he was playing in our living room! With so many hits he wrote from his days with Supertramp and several solo albums there was more than enough material for him to choose from........only wish he could have played for another hour to cover some of my favorites!

IF you every have the opportunity to see Roger Hodgson, I strongly encourage you see one of his shows.....you will be taken in both spiritually and emotionally as you sing along with some of the favorites and be amazed at the amount of songs you remember that will bring back many memories.....

Favorite moment: Too many to choose from but he did play In Jeopardy which was my favorite.

Setlist: Take the Long Way Home, School, In Jeopardy, Lovers in the Wind, Breakfast in America, Sister Moonshine, Hide in your Shell, Lord is it Mine, The Logical Song, Death and a Zoo, If Everyone was Listening, Had a Dream, Give a Little Bit.

Roger Hodgson who is originally from the south coast of England, in a place called Portsmouth, rose to success as the singer of progressive rock giants, Supertramp. He is the brain behind their biggest hits to date.

Tonight he performs a slew of the most successful songs that he has ever written with some of his solo material thrown in for good measure. Either way, he could perform anything to this audience tonight and they would lap it up. To this day he is still singing in his tenor head voice, which was one of the recognizable beacons of his former band, Supertramp. Accompanying himself on piano, and guitar, this musician plays songs such as “In Jeopardy” and “Had a Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy)”. He is exceptionally skilled, writing songs that just get stuck in your head. What a lot of people don’t know is that he is quite an export of a musician, with most of his success being in America! He makes various jibes about this throughout this set, sporting a fantastic humour throughout.

For anyone who is or was a fan of Supertramp, you've got to see Roger Hodgson, their voice and co-founder, in concert. I was fortunate to see Supertramp back in their heyday in the 1970s and I can say without a doubt that Roger's show surpasses that by far. There is a reason so many fans (myself included) believe he is the soul and spirit of the band. There is nothing better than seeing the original singer/songwriter performing the songs he wrote - Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, Breakfast in America, The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Fool's Overture, School, It's Raining Again, and so many more. I can't wait to see Roger again this year on his Breakfast in America World Tour.

Absolutely AMAZING concert! Roger sounds as good as he did in his Supertramp days! Knew how great the show would be when the first song was Take The Long Way Home. Loved the classics - The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, Its Raining Again, Give A Little Bit and In Your Shell. Just wanted to hear Crime Of The Century, which would have been the icing on the cake! His backing band were incredible- as good as the original Supertramp! Well worth the trip from Liverpool!

I'm a long time fan of Roger Hodgson. I discover Supertramp when I was really young and I've attended more than 100 shows around Europe and North America. This 2016 tour and his performance in Palau de la Música it's one of the best I've seen so far. He has managed to recreate the sound of Supertramp 100% with an extremely talentous band. I really recommend to people to try to be at one of his shows. You will regret it if you miss it!

The show in Dublin, Ireland was a special "DUO SHOW" with just Roger and his percussionist, Aaron. It was absolutely amazing! The audience was mesmerized during Fool's Overture then dancing and singing along to "It's Raining Again" and "Take the Long Way Home"! It was a very special evening and a must see for fans!

There are few vocalists instantly recognizable from the first few bars of a song but  Roger Hodgson  is certainly one of that unique group. The singer/songwriter of Supertramp, his voice is as unmistakable as the distinct keyboard sound of his early hits. The Times-  London , Review from The Royal Albert Hall Concert

Overjoyed grins and rhythmic claps, accurate whistling and enthusiastic screams of jubilation accompanied with the voice that brings goosebumps through his work. At the end, the completely enthused listeners didn’t want to let the world star go. Aachen Nachrichten, Bernd Büttgens

Beautiful. That’s the word that just keeps popping into your head when watching  Roger Hodgson  perform. Whether it’s the melodic complexity of his songs, the harmonies he weaves with his band, the lyrics that sweep you away or his ability to still command the incredible upper range of his voice, beautiful was what kept coming to mind over and over again during his performance. ‘Breathtaking’ might also apply. ‘I want more’ certainly would . Mesa Classic Rock Music Examiner, Ten Hansen

From his fingers came the magic melodies that flowed from the heart, and as I believe: touched hearts. There was a special bond between the artist and the audience. There was something genuinely mystical about it. Something that only happens when dealing with real art. Beautiful show. Blog Nawiedzonego, Andrzej Gwoździk

Roger Hodgson Serves Up Supertramp Favorites: 2020 Review

roger hodgson tour 2022 italia

Roger Hodgson, Feb. 15, 2020, Ridgefield Playhouse, Ridgefield, Conn. (Photo: © Greg Brodsky)

It’s been more than 40 years since Supertramp’s breakout album, Breakfast in America , was released in 1979. The British band had already achieved success with their mid-’70s output Crime of the Century , Crisis? What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments , each of which had earned solid sales worldwide and their first pop radio success with “Dreamer,” “Bloody Well Right” and “Give a Little Bit.”

But few would have anticipated what happened next when Breakfast was served. Three huge singles led to a #1 album in most territories, and now the composer and the singer of those songs, Roger Hodgson , is on an extended tour four decades later.

On a cold, mid-February night, Hodgson presented his Breakfast in America world tour with his four-piece band, before an appreciative audience at the Ridgefield Playhouse in this charming Connecticut town 60 miles north of New York City. Songs from the 1979 album dominated the evening’s 15-song setlist.

Hodgson, dressed impeccably in a white suit, opened with “Take the Long Way Home,” one of the album’s big hits. After the applause, he greeted the audience and had the house lights turned on so he could see the crowd. As he spotted two late arrivals still headed for their seats, he deadpanned, “You just missed the best song,” to which one of them replied, “We took the wrong way here.” The audience roared.

Two songs later, Hodgson introduced the title track from Breakfast in America . Referring to the lyrics that begin Take a look at my girlfriend, she’s the only one I got, Not much of a girlfriend… , he explained that he wrote it when he was just 19 years old. (Hodgson composed many of the songs that would later became Supertramp hits when he was still in his teens.) “What was I thinking,” he asked the audience rhetorically. “I’m so glad I learned to write better love songs.”

Watch Hodgson and his band perform the song on the tour’s opening night, a few evenings’ earlier

[Best Classic Bands asked him after the show about the song that was written in 1969 but not recorded until nearly a decade later. “I never felt it fit with the rest of the songs on Crime , Crisis or Quietest Moments ,” he explained. “But with Breakfast in America , which was a collection of very different, upbeat songs, I felt it did.”]

During the performance, Hodgson  – born on March 21, 1950 – transitioned seamlessly from keyboards to guitar to piano. For “The Logical Song,” Supertramp’s biggest single, he was back on his Roland and when he got to the “who I am” part, he was still able to hit the lyric’s high notes. Multi-instrumentalist Michael Ghegan, a standout throughout the evening, played the song’s distinctive sax parts and whistles.

Watch them perform it at that same Feb. 13 concert

For “Had a Dream (Sleeping With the Enemy)” from his 1984 solo LP, In the Eye of the Storm , Hodgson, on guitar, urged the suburban audience to stand, and they reacted enthusiastically to the crowd pleaser. On “Child of Vision,” he sparkled on piano on the song’s lengthy instrumental passage.

Watch Hodgson’s official live clip of the song, from 2013

“I’ve lived my dream,” said Hodgson at one point.

The evening closed with “Give a Little Bit,” with the audience singing along.

The world tour was expected to continue throughout the rest of 2020 but was suspended due to the pandemic. When he resumes touring, tickets will be available here and here .

Thanks Greg for eloquently expressing what we all experienced and felt in our hearts with Roger and band in Ridgefield! Following Roger’s FB for the new US dates and ready to do it all again – an unforgettable concert that had us rocking and dancing, astonished and rapt with deep emotion all night and long after. Loved the joyful humour and good laughs, every ‘little bit’ something special. Counting the days to the next one!

Lucy

I can’t wait to see Roger again in just a few days. I’ve been waiting weeks and the show is finally almost here. There are not many artists I greatly look forward to seeing, but Roger’s show is not just seeing him perform his songs that I love; it’s also as if I’m coming to see an old friend again and it appears that many in the audience think as I do, with the comments I hear. There is nothing better than seeing the original singer/songwriter performing his own songs. For anyone who was or is a fan of Supertramp, you’ve got to see Roger live in concert. He IS Supertramp.

Nuskysa

Great review. It shows so clearly why Roger Hodgson is one of the best performers nowadays. I haven’t seen ever such communication between an Artist and his audience, as Roger does, all the feelings you can experience: It’s a thrill, a blast, chills and goosebumps, all at the same time… He achieves a unique and unforgettable magic atmosphere. When you have such wonderful songs in the repertoire you don’t need anything else, just open your heart and let yourself go. Good songs don’t need much decoration, when you have good songs all you have to do is play them and empty yourself, leave the heart in each one. What is the recipe for a good song?, I think Roger has it, and it is: Good lyrics, good music, good performance and something else that nobody knows what it is and that is what really matters, that’s the key, that’s what Roger does, and that’s why his shows are so special, because , when you attend to one of his concerts, you feel you have to see him once and another, no matter how far you have to travel. It’s worth!!!

Dan W

I was there! I see Roger every year he tours in the US and just keeps getting better, it’s something special…..the extended jams were really awesome.

Mila

The best ! Not more needed to say.

Bill

I was there and what a great show it was !! Roger’s interactions with the crowd between songs only added to the intimate atmosphere of the Ridgefield. I was fortunate to connect with Roger after the show as part of my meet & greet ticket. It was such an honor and he was so genuine and generous with his time. What a great guy !! Looking forward to future shows.

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Moscow concert hall attack: Why is ISIL targeting Russia?

Deadly attack in Moscow claimed by ISIL affiliate leaves more than 133 people dead and approximately 100 injured.

More than 133 people have been killed and more than 100 others were injured following a brazen attack on concertgoers at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall before a performance by a Soviet-era rock band on Friday.

Assailants dressed in camouflage uniforms opened fire and reportedly threw explosive devices inside the concert venue, which was left in flames with its roof collapsing after the deadly attack.

Eleven people had been detained, including four people directly involved in the armed assault, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Saturday.

ISIL’s Afghan branch – also known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) – has claimed responsibility for the attack and United States officials have confirmed the authenticity of that claim, according to the Reuters news agency.

Here is what we know about the group and their possible motive for the Moscow attack.

ISIL’s Afghanistan branch

The group remains one of the most active affiliates of ISIL and takes its title from an ancient caliphate in the region that once encompassed areas of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

The group emerged from eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and was made up of breakaway fighters of the Pakistan Taliban and local fighters who pledged allegiance to the late ISIL leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi .

The group has since established a fearsome reputation for acts of brutality.

Murat Aslan, a military analyst and former Turkish army colonel, said ISIL’s Afghanistan affiliate is known for its “radical and tough methodologies”.

“I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile,” Aslan told Al Jazeera.

“They are now in Moscow. Previously they were in Iran, and we will see much more attacks, maybe in other capitals,” he added.

Though its membership in Afghanistan is said to have declined since a peak in about 2018, its fighters still pose one of the greatest threats to the Taliban’s authority in Afghanistan.

Previous attacks by the group

ISKP fighters claimed responsibility for the 2021 attacks outside Kabul airport that left at least 175 civilians dead, killed 13 US soldiers, and many dozens injured.

The ISIL affiliate was previously blamed for carrying out a bloody attack on a maternity ward in Kabul in May 2020 that killed 24 people, including women and infants. In November that same year, the group carried out an attack on Kabul University, killing at least 22 teachers and students.

In September 2022, the group took responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Last year, Iran blamed the group for two separate attacks on a major shrine in southern Shiraz – the Shah Cheragh – which killed at least 14 people and injured more than 40.

The US claimed that it intercepted communications confirming that the group was preparing to carry out attacks before coordinated suicide bombings in Iran in January this year killed nearly 100 people in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman. ISKP claimed responsibility for the Kerman attacks.

Why is ISIL attacking Russia?

Defence and security analysts say the group has targeted its propaganda at Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years over the alleged oppression of Muslims by Russia.

“Russian foreign policy has been one big red flag for ISIS [ISIL],” Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Washington-based Wilson Center told Al Jazeera. “The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Russian actions in Chechnya, Moscow’s close relationships with the Syrian and Iranian governments, and especially the military campaigns that Russia has waged against ISIS fighters in Syria and — through Wagner Group mercenaries – in parts of Africa.”

All of that has meant that Moscow has become a focus of ISKP’s “extensive propaganda war,” said Amira Jadoon, assistant professor at Clemson University in South Carolina and co-author of, The Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Strategic Alliances and Rivalries.

“Russia’s engagement in the global fight against ISIS and its affiliates, especially through its military operations in Syria and its efforts to establish connections with the Afghan Taliban – ISIS-K’s rival – marks Russia as a key adversary for ISIS/ISIS-K,” Jadoon told Al Jazeera.

Should the Moscow attack be “definitely attributed” to ISKP, Jadoon said, the group hopes to win support and advance “its goal to evolve into a terrorist organisation with global influence” by demonstrating that it can launch attacks within Russian territory.

“ISK [ISKP] has consistently demonstrated its ambition to evolve into a formidable regional entity … By directing its aggression towards nations such as Iran and Russia, ISK not only confronts regional heavyweights but also underscores its political relevance and operational reach on the global stage,” Jadoon said.

Kabir Taneja, a fellow at the Strategic Studies Programme of the Observer Research Foundation – a think tank based in New Delhi, India – told Al Jazeera that Russia is seen by ISIL and its affiliates as “a crusading power against Muslims”.

“Russia has been a target for ISIS and not just ISKP from the beginning,” Taneja, author of the book, The ISIS Peril, said.

“ISKP attacked [the] Russian embassy in Kabul in 2022, and over the months, Russian security agencies have upped their efforts to clamp down on pro-ISIS ecosystems both in Russia and around its borders, specifically Central Asia and the Caucusus,” he said.

In early March, Russia’s Federal Security Service, better known as the FSB, said it had thwarted an ISIL plan to attack a Moscow synagogue.

“The most compelling current motivation for ISIS-K to attack Russia is the Taliban factor. The Taliban is a bitter rival of ISIS, and ISIS views Russia as a friend of the Taliban,” said Kugelman.

Moscow’s close relations with Israel are also anathema to ISIL’s ideology, Taneja said.

“So this friction is not new ideologically, but is so tactically,” he told Al Jazeera.

There’s another factor, too: Largely away from the world’s attention, the armed group has regrouped into a formidable force after setbacks in Syria and Iran.

“ISKP in Afghanistan has grown in strength significantly … and it’s not just ISKP, ISIS in its original regions of operations, Syria and Iraq, also sees [an] uptick in operational capabilities,” Taneja said. Today, he added, it is “ideologically powerful even if not politically, tactically or strategically … that powerful any more”.

That poses a challenge for a distracted world, he said.

“How to combat this is the big question at a time when big power competition and global geopolitical churn has put counterterrorism on the back burner,” Taneja added.

How has ISIL responded?

ISKP social media channels are “jubilant” following the attack on Moscow, said Abdul Basit, a senior associate fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore.

“They are celebrating the attack,” Basit told Al Jazeera, adding that supporters are “translating and recirculating the responsibility claim” issued by the ISIL-linked Amaq News Agency.

Basit said that ISIL’s method of operations involves amplifying a propaganda campaign in advance of large-scale attacks and this had been observed in recent anti-Russian messaging. Such attacks “add to the credibility” of armed groups, Basit explained, which then “increases the scope of their funding, recruitment and propaganda”.

More attacks are possible in Russia and elsewhere, he added, given the key role that ISIL recruits of Central Asian origin – particularly Tajiks – played when the group held territory in Syria. They have now returned to the Central Asia region and their intent to carry out attacks has now materialised in capability, Basit said.

Previous attacks in Russia

Moscow and other Russian cities have been the targets of previous attacks.

In 2002, Chechen fighters took more than 900 people hostage in a Moscow theatre, the Dubrovka, demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya and an end to Russia’s war on the region.

Russian special forces attacked the theatre to end the standoff and 130 people were killed, most suffocated by a gas used by security forces to leave the Chechen fighters unconscious.

The deadliest attack in Russia was the 2004 Beslan school siege which was carried out by members of a Chechen armed group seeking Chechnya’s independence from Russia. The siege killed 334 people, including 186 children.
