In honor of The Grand Ole Opry's 70th Anniversary in 1996, McEntire teamed up with fellow country titan Barbara Mandrell to deliver a powerhouse performance of Mandrell's 1981 hit "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool," and it was a certified treat .

If there's anyone who loves singing with other powerful country artists, it is Reba McEntire — which made her the perfect choice when Mandrell took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium for a live performance of her 80s hit "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool."

"Girl, I am so thrilled to be here at the Ryman with you," Mandrell mused before the set. "I love you so much, and this is the first time. I've always wanted us to do something together; this is the first time."

"It is," McEntire agreed. "And I'm really glad that my first time to get to sing on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium is with you ."

"This is your... are you kidding?" Mandrell asked.

"Yeah," McEntire confirmed. "I'm not kidding!" Until Mandrell's 1996 performance, McEntire had never performed at the Ryman Auditorium, which had been the home of the Grand Ole Opry until 1974 .

"I love that!" Mandrell gushed.

Reba McEntire walks the carpet of the 23rd Annual American Music Awards

"Yeah, with Barbara Mandrell!" McEntire exclaimed gleefully as the band started playing.

Mandrell and McEntire's voices are a match made in heaven, boasting perfect sonic synergy for the country-fried duet. Mandrell and McEntire are western-singing sirens, and they injected soul and delightful banter throughout their stirring performance of "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool."

The song's lyrics — all centered around the singers' unabashed pride in their country roots — served as a fun-filled launching pad for several cute moments together as they reminisced on "puttin' peanuts in my Coke," "wearin' straight-leg Levis," and other bits of nostalgic.

About halfway through the performance, Mandrell pointed out the balcony seat she sat in during her first-ever visit to the iconic venue. McEntire then revealed that she scored a seat under the balcony during her first visit, earning a chuckle from Mandrell before they launched back into the angelic song.

McEntire and Mandrell's vocals were firing off on all cylinders throughout the set, and they upped the ante during the final chorus when the pair belted the final note with expert precision. After singing the final lyric, " I was country when country wasn't cool ," Mandrell cheekily added, "We were, we are, and we always will be."

"We've come a long way, baby!" McEntire cheered as the pair swapped sweet post-performance pleasantries.

With tour dates that have resonated with fans around the world, Reba has proven time and again why she’s hailed as “the Queen of Country.” Her journey from a humble Oklahoma upbringing to the bright lights of Nashville is a story of passion, perseverance, and profound talent.

Tour Dates That Tell a Tale:

  • Reba’s music has touched the hearts of millions, with over 100 singles gracing the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart since the 1970s, and an astounding 25 of those singles reaching the coveted number one spot.
  • Her live shows are legendary, where fans experience the magic of her timeless hits. From the moment she steps on stage, Reba weaves a musical tapestry that captivates her audience.

Awards and Achievements:

  • Grammy Award Winner for the iconic “Whoever’s in New England.”

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Reba’s journey began as a young girl, singing harmonies with her siblings as “The Singing McEntires.” They performed at local events, planting the seeds of what would become an extraordinary career. Her path led her to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she studied to be a teacher while continuing to pursue her musical dreams.

Nashville Calling:

The turning point came when the talented Red Steagall discovered Reba’s enchanting voice at a rodeo event. Steagall’s belief in her potential led to a life-changing moment. With Steagall’s help, she secured a recording contract with PolyGram/Mercury Records in 1975, embarking on her journey to Nashville.

' data-src=

Reba McEntire songs from the 90’s will always have a place in our hearts.  Reba has been cranking out country music songs for over 5 decades, totaling over 120 singles.  But, if you ask any country fan, Reba McEntire songs from the 90’s are usually at the top of their list of faves.

Reba McEntire released her first album in 1976, however those songs didn’t create a whole lot of buzz and fell flat.  Her second album, “Out Of A Dream,” was released in 1979 and put her on the map and Top 40 charts.  In to the 1980’s Reba continued to release music and put herself on the map, hitting back to back spots on the Top 20 charts.

By the 1990’s, Reba McEntire’s songs made her a household name and the rest is history.  Reba McEntire songs from the 90’s included huge hits, and easily changed her status from household name to country music icon, and helped secure her place in the Country Music Hall Of Fame.  Let’s take a look at some of Reba’s most popular songs from the 90s.

56th Academy of Country Music Awards: When, How, and What to Watch! [Video]

Reba McEntire: Fancy

If you ask most country music fans what their first favorite Reba song is, nine times out of ten the answer is “Fancy.”  The song was released in 1991 under her “Rumor Has It” album and made it to #8 on the country music charts.  The dark lyrics and storytelling depict Reba as a girl named Fancy who was born in a shack to a destitute mother who shipped her off with gentleman callers when she was a young teen so she could make a life for herself.

What a lot of people don’t know about Reba McEntire’s “Fancy,” is that contrary to popular belief it’s not her real life story and is actually a remake of Bobbie Gentry’s song from 1970.

Reba McEntire: The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia

Reba released The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia in 1992 on her “For My Broken Heart Album.”  Next year her hit song will turn 30 years old, but just like Fancy, it was also a remake.  Despite the fact that the Reba version will always be a classic, the 90’s classic was originally a 70’s  classic from Bobby Russell and Vicky Lawrence.

Reba McEntire: For My Broken Heart

It wouldn’t be a complete list of Reba songs from the 90’s without her chart topper song For My Broken Heart.  The song was released from her album of the same name in 1991 and shot up to the #1 spot on both American and Canadian country music charts.

Reba McEntire: The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter

In the mid 90’s Reba released two albums back to back.  Read My Mind was released in April 1994, and Starting Over (full of covers of her favorite artists) hit the country music radio stations in October 1995.  Despite the lengthy list of new songs, only one song from both albums topped the charts, The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter.

Reba McEntire: If You See Him/If You See Her

In the late 90’s Reba got her mojo back on the country music charts, and hit the ball out of the park with the help of Brooks and Dunn on the classic “If You See Him/If You See Her,” which skyrocketed to the number one position on the charts in 1998 and was part of Reba’s 23rd album.  By 2000 the country music queen had already released 24 studio albums, gracing us with hundreds of songs that will go down in country music history.
