Since the fair’s completion in 2010, the current Grandstand has featured some top-rated country music artists; Alabama, Kiss, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Nickleback, and Tim McGraw are only a few.

The 2011 fair was called off because the Souris River flood on July 10, 2011, inundated most of the fairgrounds and Minot.

Employees at the Fairgrounds and numerous other town residents worked incredibly hard to save all they could during the flood.

Are you wondering what to do in Minot, ND? There is currently a new game that has surprised the nation, known as Footgolf, which is what its name implies. Imagine playing golf but with your feet!

Like regular golf and soccer, the game is played on the ground; however, a soccer ball is used instead of the stiff little golf ball.

The hole, about the size of a trashcan, is situated at the end of the course from where you kicked off the game.

Altogether this one-of-a-kind golf course offers 18 holes, just like the regular standard golf course. This game can be enjoyed by anyone strong enough to kick a ball; as such, age is not a factor here.

15. Railroad Museum of Minot

The Railroad Museum of Minot is dedicated to trains that feature vintage machinery, exhibits, and antiques.

This Museum’s upper floor contains tables from Thomas the Tank Engine and other features of Thomas.

The Railroad Museum is open on Saturdays from 11 am through 3 pm, but you can visit on other days if you make an appointment.

Four transportation cabooses plus a wedge plow are currently located on museum grounds. On the ground area of the museum, there is presently a wedge plow and four transportation cabooses.

Visit the restored 1960s Great Northern Steel Center Cupola and the 1912 North Pacific Wood End Cupola, both of which have been kept in their original condition.

The museum is easily accessible to all, including people with disabilities. Visitors are also allowed to take their photos.

16. Riverwalk of Minot

The woods of Minot do not have many walkable trails; as such, the Riverwalk is one of the city’s ideal places to go for a walk.

Minot’s Riverwalk is a fair distance from Roosevelt Park. Unfortunately, the river isn’t always pleasant for swimming in due to the algae that overrun its surface sometimes.

However, walking this path offers incredible viewpoints as it loops around the former Souris River that formed a little island after being cut by forces of nature.

The Riverwalk is a nice walkable path during summer, but during winter, it is usually closed for safety reasons.

The walk does not have an actual starting point or endpoint; it is missing a few signs and goes around the Fairgrounds and Roosevelt. Having this in mind, you can take in Minot’s beauty as you walk along the river.

Aside from being a restaurant, Planet Pizza also has a bouncy house station, an arcade gaming room, and laser tag.

Minot, North Dakota may be best known for being home to the Minot Air Force Base, the North Dakota State Fair or the annual Norsk Høstfest , but there’s so much more to the community. The town formed in the late 1880’s as a winter camp for the Great Northern Railway and has been a thriving community ever since. As a smaller town that still offers a lot to do, Minot is the best of both worlds. On our recent visit, we explored great food stops, attractions, nature trails and local shops and had a blast. Where to Stay: Hampton Inn

The Hampton Inn is conveniently located by the airport and only a five minute drive from the main area. We stayed in a suite which was perfect for our family of three. The room was spacious and clean and the staff was friendly. As the top rated hotel in Minot, The Hampton Inn is a great stay and we would definitely stay there again. There is breakfast included as well.

Of all the things to do in Minot, make sure to enjoy the great food spots. All of these spots are within a 5-10 minute drive of each other so you could easily map out a fun foodie tour during your stay.

• The Station Coffee : a must for great drinks and healthy fare. I loved their matcha, pizza-wich and salad. They also offer great breakfast options.
• Whiskey Nine : one of the best places for food and entertainment in town. You can enjoy great whiskey cocktails, have fun playing the golf simulators and dine on delicious food. The Coconut Curried Chicken and Creme Brulee Bread Pudding were both fantastic.
• Charlie’s Main Street Cafe : The oldest dining spot in Minot is Charlie’s, a classic, diner, and is a must visit. It’s been ranked one of the best diners in the US by Tasting Tables and as having the one of the best hot beef sandwiches in the US by USA Today.
• Guilty Sweets : while the instagram worthy beautiful photo backdrops may get your attention initially, the delicious treats are the real reason to visit!
• Jamaican Vybz Kitchen : one of the most popular restaurants in Minot, the Jamaican cuisine is delicious!
• Prairie Sky Breads : the perfect spot for a pastry (get the cardamom knot!), scones and a packed lunch to go! We brought our sandwiches to the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge for a picnic.
• The Starving Rooster : known for their great flatbreads, The Starving Rooster is a great spot for a casual meal. In addition to flatbread, we also enjoyed a soft pretzel and brick oven pizza.
• Mi Mexico – loved the authentic Mexican food and the vibes – there was live music when we visited.
• Ironhorse Kitchen and Bar : this was one place on our restaurant list we didn’t get to because they are closed on Sundays. Check them out if you’re visiting on another day of the week – their menu looks fantastic.

2. Enjoy nature at Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge

Just 30 minutes Northwest of Minot is the beautiful Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge area . We loved how peaceful the rolling green hills around Lake Darling were. A unique feature is the Upper Souris Auto Tour which is a one-way driving route with gorgeous views. We were the only car doing the drive when we visited so it felt like we had a peaceful sanctuary all to ourselves. There’s also a great walking path called The Oxbow Nature Trail that was perfect for our family to enjoy a short stroll.

3. Sip brews at Atypical Brewery

One of the coolest breweries I’ve been to is Atypical Brewery. The brewery feels like it’s straight out of Europe but interestingly was converted from an old gas station. They made the brews right on site and we loved sampling some unique flavors including London Fog one one of their two patio spaces. Their calendar is full of fun events like trivia, live music and food trucks.

4. Explore Scandinavian Heritage Park

One of the neatest parks I’ve visited on my travels is Scandinavian Heritage Park . The park honors the five Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) through many replicas and features.  The most striking features include a 25 foot tall Dala Horse, a real  Stabbur , a full-scale replica  Stave Church , the oldest house in North Dakota and a museum with incredible artifacts. Additionally, there are beautiful shaded picnic tables and water features to enjoy.

We were SO lucky to have a tour led by Martha, a volunteer of the park who’s a member of the Sons of Norway. She takes great pride in preserving her heritage and sharing it with others. If you visit, ask if Martha is there!

5. shop local boutiques.

Minot has great local shops that are a great addition to your visit. My favorites were:

Weekender – full of fun women’s apparel, accessories and home goods items. I loved the shop’s vibe and took home a French Girl lip tint.

The Foundry – this shop is a gem! They curate a large variety of beautiful locally made home goods. I purchased kitchen towels, a dish brush and bamboo soap holder. I would have purchased more but we had limited suitcase space for the trip home!

6. Tour the Dakota Territory Air Museum

Minot is well known for the Minot Air Force Base which opened in 1957 and nearly 30 years later the Dakota Territory Air Museum was founded to honor aviation history. The museum has an impressive collection of aircraft and memorabilia from the 1900’s and 2000’s. I especially loved the old Northwest Airlines memorabilia and seeing a plane that was used to fly solo across both poles. It’s a fun spot to enjoy history and a variety of impressive planes – some that even flew in world wars.

7. Play at the Magic City Discovery Center

A relatively new addition to Minot is the Magic City Discovery Center . Their mission is to “engage children and families in the magic of lifelong learning through discovery, creativity and play.” The space definitely feels magical with many fun areas for kids and their families to explore and play. There are 12 different galleries so there is plenty to explore.

8. Visit animals at Roosevelt Park Zoo

Minot is home to a Roosevelt Park Zoo which houses many beautiful animals. I enjoyed the interactive displays for kids to learn more about the animals. My favorite section was where the zebras and giraffes live. During our visit, three giraffes walked over right by my family and for about 10 minutes we enjoyed each others company.

Minot, best known as North Dakota’s “Magic City,” sprang up overnight in 1886 when the Great Northern Railway laid down tracks in winter. The tent town multiplied rapidly, or magically some might say, into a lively population of 5,000 in only five months. Located south of the Souris River in the Souris Valley, the city continued to grow with the addition of Minot State University in the early 1900s and the Minot Air Force Base in the 1950s.

Today, North Dakota’s “Magic City” offers the charm and beauty of North Dakota's small towns and the culture and entertainment of a big city. With stunning scenery, historical sites, prairie dog tours , and ample opportunities for outdoor adventure, North Dakota is the home to many unforgettable places . And "Magic City" is definitely one of them.

1 Roosevelt Park Swimming Pool

One thing to do while in Minot, North Dakota, is to visit the Roosevelt Park swimming pool. Here, visitors and residents can soak up the sun for $5 per person (Including pool, kiddy pool, and waterslide) and cool off in warmer months.

North Dakota, although nowhere near as hot as the desert, can get steamy in summer, making places like the Roosevelt Park swimming pool even more tempting. The admission prices are on the lower side, which can be helpful for larger groups or families.

• Pool hours are Monday through Friday from 4-8 PM and then weekends from 1-8 PM.

2 Scandinavian Heritage Park

Set in the heart of Minot, travelers can explore the 14-acre Scandinavian Heritage Park , discover the Scandinavian history, and find statues, monuments, and buildings that honor five Scandinavian and Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

The Midwest is easily one of the most underrated areas to explore in the United States. Full of cities and attractions that are often overlooked by travelers planning trips across the US. We recently visited Minot, North Dakota and found it to be such a vibrant destination that deserves more attention than it currently gets.

Minot, North Dakota is most well known for its use during the prohibition era as “Little Chicago,” for being on the route from the US to Canada for rumrunners and more recently the home to an Air Force Base located just outside of the city. The population in Minot, North Dakota is just under 50,000 and is one of the largest in the state. Dubbed as the “Magic City,” named after its quick growth right after the city was founded turning from a tent city to 5000 occupants in just a few short months.

Where to Stay in Minot

If you plan on exploring any of the day trip options we recommend then you will want to rent a car, we personally like to rent cars with Expedia.

For the day trips from Minot that we recommend, we highly encourage  getting an SUV or larger vehicle with AWD or 4WD . While the places mentioned in our guide doesn’t require this vehicle we found that some of the roads are traveled more comfortably by having a bigger vehicle. Some of the roads we took are dirt and if you’re visiting in any season besides summer there’s a chance of snow in which you’ll want to have more control and a better vehicle for driving in these conditions.

Check out the Street Art

There are 16 murals in the downtown area of Minot that are all walking distance apart from eachother. The tourism office even has a visual map you can follow to find each mural. You can find it online or just wander aimlessly and find them on your own.

Don’t miss the “Magic City,” mural since that’s the nickname for the city and what to do in Minot if you want to take home a photo souvenir to remember your trip by! 

Scandinavian Heritage Park

The region is famous for its Scandinavian influence and heritage after an influx of Scandinavian settlers came to the area during the last half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. 

We were told the huge amount of Norwegians specifically flocked to this area because only the eldest men could be landowners in Norway, having land ‘up for grabs’ in the United States was attractive to many Norwegians who might not be able to own land themselves in their home country.

The Scandinavian Heritage Park celebrates the Scandinavian culture and influences in the area.

Our two favorite spots to visit in the Heritage Park were the Norweigan Gol Stave Church replica and the giant Swedish Dala Horse .

The replica of the Stave Church is especially interesting as there are as few as 28 left in Norway which is a stark comparison considering that around 1000 were built in the Middle Ages. The replica here is built after the Gol Stave Church in Norway. Be sure to go inside and admire the woodwork, plus it smells great!

Besides those two monuments, you can walk around and visit the other buildings and monuments erected here to honor each of the Scandinavian cultures and some of their most notable figures in history.

Don’t miss visiting the trolls either, there’s one inside the visitors center and Sigdal house.

Another great idea for what to do in Minot if you’re visiting in September is the famous Norsk Hostfest held annually at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in Minot, North Dakota celebrating the Scandinavian culture with festivities, performances, and other activities!

Note: The Scandinavian Heritage Park closes at 4 pm daily. This means you can’t enter any of the buildings but you can still walk the grounds after hours and enjoy the exterior of the buildings, statues, and monuments even after hours.

Saul’s Speakeasy

Their specialty is giving you a wine experience like you haven’t had before. Each of the wines they have here have their own special glass. Before visiting we had no idea that there were more kinds of wine glasses beyond red and white glasses.

There are all types of specialty wine glassware that is meant to be drank with very specific wines. They do the whole shebang here and will give you side by side tastings of wine in the proper glass and a regular glass, you can actually taste the difference.

Besides leaving learning something new you also have a chance of trying rare and expensive wines that you wouldn’t typically find at your average restaurant like Opus One using their special Coravin wine opener that lets you get a tasting of wine out of the bottle without actually opening it.

Now the tricky part is, you have to figure out how to not only find Saul’s but to get in! Text “Hi,” to 701 401-2105 to get a riddle you have to solve. Once you solve the riddle you get the password to enter located down the white staircase at 23 Main Street.

Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks

Another great idea for what to do in Minot if you love craft beer or nightlife is visit Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks.

For any beer lovers like us then you have to check out  Atypical Brewery & Barrelworks  for some delicious craft brews. Located in an adorable English cottage-style building that looks straight out of the Hobbit, you can sample all their different beers in tasting size or commit to a large pour.

This was our favorite brewery during our North Dakota trip!

Take a Walk on the Woodland Trail

This next thing for what to do in Minot, North Dakota is for anyone looking to escape the downtown area and enjoy the nearby scenery and nature. The Woodland Trail is a lovely manicured and well-kept trail just outside of the city limits.

You’ll see locals here walking their dogs and in the winter the trails are open for cross country skiers and snowshoeing.

The trail is in total 3 miles long along the Souris River and Highway 83 and was newly improved by the city. This is just a nice place to get some fresh air and be surrounded by some trees along the river for a leisurely walk.

Visit Minot’s Museums

Taube Museum of Art

Located in downtown Minot, North Dakota this museum is the local art museum with two galleries inside featuring artwork by local and regional artists. There’s also a gift shop selling local artwork. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Hours: Tuesday – Friday 10:30 am – 5:30 pm, Saturdays 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Railroad Museum

Another one of the best things to do in Minot if you love museums is the Railroad Museum. Focusing on railroad history in the United States with exhibits featuring the railway history in the United States and how they impacted the cities and communities around them starting from 1886 to present day.

Hours: Saturday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm year-round

Day Trips from Minot 

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The park has 3 units, the North Unit, the South Unit, and the Elkhorn Ranch Unit. The most popular and most visited is the South Unit near Medora where Theodore Roosevelt’s cabin is. However, we are going to focus on the North Unit as this is the closest entrance to the park from Minot, North Dakota near Watford City.

The park has impressive scenic buttes, panoramic viewpoints, rock formations, and herds of wild animals like bison, feral horses, and bighorn sheep.

We recommend doing the 14-mile scenic drive through the North Unit through the badlands. There are two beautiful overlooks, River Bend Overlook, and Oxbow Overlook to stop among other stops like the Cannonball Rock formations.

If you plan on doing just the drive and overlook stops then plan for at least 1.5-2 hours in the park. There are also hiking trails for all levels from easy to strenuous to enjoy.

We were lucky to see both wild horses off in the distance from the River Bend Overlook and large groups of bison during our drive to Oxbow Overlook.

While seeing wild animals is pretty spectacular it’s important not to get out of the car or try to get close to the animals. These are wild animals and when provoked they have attacked and killed visitors.

Lake Sakakawea

Other great outdoor leisure activities include bird watching, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. 

One great place to enjoy many of these activities is from Tobacco Gardens Resort & Marina.  From here we met Peggy who is the one woman show behind this successful campground and outdoor recreational park. 

There are great trails in the area including the Birnt Hill trail along the water on the famous Lewis & Clark trail . This area was famously explored by the two expeditions and across from the Birnt Hill trail is where Meriwether Lewis was shot in the leg by accident hunting.

You can also rent boats and kayaks here to enjoy the scenery by water. This is also a great place for fishing.

If you want to extend your day trip you can also reserve a spot at Tobacco Garden’s campground.

Be aware that this western part of the state does have rattlesnakes, use precaution when on the trails!

Lake Metigoshe

Here you can enjoy incredible water activities like swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and water skiing in the summer and in the winter months this is where alot of ice fishing takes place.

If you’re lucky you’ll spot a moose as they are in the area and are often spotted in early mornings or at dusk. 

Some more great water activities and hiking trails can be enjoyed at Lake Metigoshe State Park. We did our kayaking from here on School Section Lake, a much smaller and quieter lake surrounded by nature. We even saw beaver and mink as we paddled around. Don’t forget your bug spray when you’re doing water activities in the warmer months.

Extend your day trip and stay overnight in a rental on the lake at La Casa Tortuga – Lake Metigoshe or Four Bedroom Cabin right on the water.

Also, check out Bottineau nearby for more great activities including the 21st century Stonehenge at Mystical Horizons, Pride Dairy for Ice Cream, and shops and restaurants in downtown Bottineau.

Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel has a convenient location right across the Minot International Airport and is a classic hotel and great for a one night stay. The hotel definitely has vibes of nostalgia as it still has an older style vibe. While there are no frills this hotel has anything you need to spend a night while on your North Dakota road trip.

Welcome to minot for state fair, nd state parade.

The North Dakota State Fair and the North Dakota State Parade bring thousands of visitors to Minot from all across the state, other states, Canada and other foreign countries.

This year’s State Fair opens today and runs through Saturday, July 27.

Celebrating its 59th year as a state fair, this is a cherished tradition in Minot. Even prior to hosting the official state fair of North Dakota, Minot has had a fair since the 1920s.

Last year’s fair made headlines with an all-time high of 356,534 visitors, up 13% from the previous year’s numbers, according to reported fair attendance for 2023. The previous record was 320,486 visitors in 2013. It’s likely this year’s fair’s attendance will bring in high numbers as well.

This will be Craig Rudland’s first fair as its general manager. It’s not his first fair, though. He has more than 40 years of experience with the fair.

The North Dakota State Parade, an entity separate from the fair, is Saturday, starting at 9:15 a.m. at the corner of Broadway and Burdick Expressway. From there the parade travels east on Burdick and then through the fairgrounds. Thousands of people line the route, where they will see nearly 190 units in the parade.

Some new features have been added to the fair, including the addition of metal detectors at all gates and a playground in the West Park area.

The fair, recognized as the largest event in North Dakota, and the parade, one of the largest parades in the state, are major events in the city of Minot and make a significant economic impact on this community – hotels, restaurants, convenience stores and many other businesses.

With a focus on agriculture, the State Fair provides an opportunity for 4-H, FFA and open class exhibitors to show their hard work, skills and talents while competing for awards.

Fair visitors also can enjoy the diverse range of activities, entertainment, etc., during the nine days.

The Mission Generation Competition is a high-intensity event designed to enhance team dynamics and provide rigorous training for worldwide deterrence. This event aims to demonstrate and evaluate proficiencies by incorporating urgency and fostering spirited competition among various units. During the competition, teams from the 5th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 5th Munitions Squadron, 23rd Bomb Squadron and the 69th Bomb Squadron showcased their proficiency in generating lethal capabilities swiftly and safely. The event evaluated teams in four distinct categories: a dress and appearance inspection, a consolidated tool kit inspection, a written test, and the main competition which was broken up into three sections. The first was a crew chief aircraft generation competition where both teams faced off to see which could change the number one and number four tires on the B-52H Stratofortress more quickly. Afterwards, the bomb build competition involved two teams building a total of eight GBU-38 version ones, an accurate 500 pound joint direct attack munition, on top of two MHU-141S. The event then concluded with a weapons load crew competition where both teams raced to safely and correctly load a total of six GBU-38 version ones from the two MHU-141S onto and into the B-52H Stratofortress. Tech. Sgt. Blaise Hartwig, 5th MXG loading standardization crew member, explained the competition's significance. "This was the first Mission Generation Competition where we got crew chiefs involved from both bomber generation squadrons as well as 5th MUNS, our ammo counterparts,” said Hartwig. “Those at 5th MUNS did the bomb build-up and our load crews from both the Knighthawk and the Bomber Baron sides put it all together. From getting the B-52H Stratofortress ready, to hanging the bombs." In the past, similar competitions have been held quarterly among the weapons crews. What set this iteration apart was not only the inclusion of multiple units that comprise 5th MXG, but holding the event in front of a crowd. Airman 1st Class Lein Figueroa, 5th AMXS crew chief, reflected on the experience of competing for the first time. Figueroa remarked how nerve wracking it was to perform his job in front of a crowd. At first he felt the nerves just waiting for the competition to start. However, as soon as it began, he focused on blocking out the noise and competing. "So we competed in the tire change competition and it was definitely a new experience for us since we're so used to working at our pace,” said Figueroa. “Having to compete against someone else while maintaining our regular safety measures and doing so at a faster pace added some pressure on us. It definitely helped us grow and learn things that we didn't know or spot things we weren't used to seeing." That spirit of teamwork, pressure and friendly competition was at the forefront of the mind of Master Sgt. Justin Zechman, 5th MUNS production flight chief, when putting this event together. "I think competitiveness builds on our training. Instead of doing the mundane everyday aspect of what we do here, putting a competitive spin on it builds that proficiency to a higher level in my opinion,” said Zechman. “Competiton makes our skill level and proficiency ten times better.” That competitive spirit was felt throughout the combined efforts of 5th AMXS, 5th MUNS, 23rd BS and 69th BS Airmen as they worked to generate a lethal aircraft in a high pressure situation. Zechman reflected how turning the competition into an event that fellow Team Minot leaders, Airmen and families watched added to the overall camaraderie of the crews. The energy he saw pour out from the crowd with their signs and cheers bled over and he believes the competitors fed off of it. “Ammo really brought it and built all four bombs in 11 minutes and our load crew guys absolutely crushed it,” said Hartwig. “Both crews beat our regular time standard, which is about 55 minutes. Nobody went above 25 minutes, so it went really well." With this inaugural iteration out of the way, the future of the 5th MXG’s Mission Generation Competition has already been discussed. According to Zechman, 5th Bomb Wing and 5th MXG leaders have already discussed the possibility of turning this competiton into a quarterly event. The Mission Generation Competition not only highlighted the exceptional capabilities of Team Minot's personnel, but also reinforced the importance of readiness and teamwork in achieving mission success. By fostering a spirit of competition and collaboration, the event not only sharpened the skills of those involved but also strengthened inter-squadron relationships. As Team Minot looks forward to future iterations of this event, the lessons learned and camaraderie built will continue to enhance the base’s readiness and capability to respond anytime, anywhere.
