About Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, his recording career has included eleven studio albums, film soundtracks for Alan Parker’s ‘Birdy’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and Philip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ as well as numerous live albums. His wider musical career has included multiple Grammy Awards, the world-renowned Real World Studios, the formation of the Real World Records label, and in 1980 the creation of WOMAD, the festival that has launched the careers of many artists from around the world and has just celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Peter Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS (Witness.org) in 1992, the organization that pioneers the use of cameras and technology in human rights campaigning, and in 2007, alongside Sir Richard Branson, he founded The Elders (theelders.org) which was launched by Nelson Mandela.  In 2006, Peter Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates and in 2008 was also included in the Time 100 list. Peter Gabriel Expands Upcoming Fall North American Tour

Peter Gabriel has announced 13 additional tour dates to his North American run in September and October. The musician, who recently shared another new song, “Playing For Time,” from his extremely long-awaited new album, i/o , will now hit cities like Cleveland, Dallas, and Denver.

Gabriel still hasn’t shared an official release date for i/o , which will be his first album of all new material since 2002’s Up (more recent releases, like Scratch My Back and New Blood , have featured cover songs and new orchestral versions of his own material). Despite that lack of a release date, however, Gabriel’s scheduled a full-fledged tour in support of i/o , starting with a European run in May.

“Playing for Time (Dark-Side Mix)” is a sweeping ballad that finds Gabriel, as he put it in a statement, meditating on “time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories, which get stashed inside the brain.” The song features Tom Cawley on piano, while Ed Shearmur handled the orchestral arrangement, recording those parts with several players featured in Gabriel’s New Blood Orchestra.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

Like Gabriel’s last two i/o releases — “Panopticon” and “The Court” — “Playing for Time” was released to coincide with the full moon. And also like those last two releases, Gabriel will release a couple of different mixes of “Playing for Time” later this month: The “Dark-Side” mix out today was handled by Tchad Blake, while Mark “Spike” Stent and Hans-Martin Buff helmed the “Bright-Side Mix” and “Atmos In-Side Mix,” respectively.

Entertainment | peter gabriel stuns, as usual, at little caesars arena.

Peter Gabriel performs Friday night, Sept. 29, at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena (Photo by Andrew Potter/313 Presents)

Since his costumed days with Genesis during the 70s, Gabriel has time and again established new standards for artful rock show visual presentations, backing those up with sublime musical performances. He wasn’t alone in that, of course, but those paying attention can trace most any multi-media concert spectacle aesthetic — from Madonna to Taylor Swift and Beyonce — back to Gabriel’s standard-setting during the past 50 years.

And no matter how long he waits between tours, he always makes the wait worthwhile.

On Friday night, Sept. 29, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (with Genesis and on his own) came to the metro area for the first time since 2016, with Sting at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and the for the first show of his own since 2012, also at the Palace. His following has eroded during the interim — just over 7,000 came to Little Caesars Arena –but those in attendance witnessed another magical night, nearly two and a half hours (plus a 20-minute intermission) of deftly crafted and absolutely stunning sight and sound highlights.

It was challenging, too. Gabriel is in the midst of releasing a new album, “i/o,” in unconventional fashion, putting out new songs one at a time, each on a full moon. Half of Friday’s 22-song set hailed from the project, including one track, “This is Home,” that dropped earlier in the day and two, “And Still” and “Live and Let Live,” that are still waiting their turn. With a conceptual bent that Gabriel explained during his song introductions it was a lot of semi- or unfamiliar material to present, especially to fans who had waited so long to see him. But Gabriel has an audience that’s willing to follow his muse, and at Little Caesars it was attentive for the “i/o” songs and exploded when “rewarded” with the hits.

The show opened with an unfamiliar take on some familiar material. At precisely 8 p.m. — as told by an analog-style clock on a video screen above the stage — Gabriel walked on alone, sporting a double-breasted vest and acknowledged that it’s “been a long time,” even poking fun at his appearance at age 73. He then sat with longtime bassist Tony Levin in sitting beside a center-stage “campfire,” putting a keyboard on his lap to play “Here Come the Flood’s” first performance on the North American leg of the tour.

The two were then joined by the other seven musicians for an austere take of his 2002 hit “Growing Up” before revving up the full-stage spectacle for “i/o’s” proggy “Panopticom.”

The fresh fare was given plenty of opportunity for impact. Each song was embellished with visuals — paintings, photos, films, drawings — by a different artist, none more arresting than the opening of the show’s second half From behind a transparent scrim at the front of the stage the group was silhouetted throughout “Darkness” (from 2002’s “Up” album), and for the new “Love Can Heal” Gabriel “painted” along the screen from behind. “Live and Let Live,” with its hymn-like build, even pulled the audience to its feet at the end, albeit after being beckoned by Gabriel.

His current band (and perfectly balanced sound mix) delivered all of it lovingly. Levin and guitarist David Rhodes, each with more than four decades behind Gabriel, and monster drummer Manu Katche were the bedrock, and Josh Shpak on trumpet and the string section of cellist Linnea Olsson and violinist Marina Moore added welcome new textures to favorites such as “Digging in the Dirt,” “Red Rain” and “Big Time.” Olsson was also Gabriel’s vocal foil during “Don’t Give Up” and “In Your Eyes,” while “Sledgehammer” and “Solsbury Hill,” with Gabriel skipping around the stage during the latter, haven’t lost any of their joyful buoyancy over the years.

Gabriel capped the night with the solemn but defiant “Biko,” the 1980 ode to slain South African activist Stephen Biko that he dedicated to all those doing the same work. It ended, per usual, with the audience taking over the song’s chanted refrain — and certainly hoping there will be another opportunity, in the not-too-distant future, to sing with Gabriel again.

Peter Gabriel Announces Additional 2023 North American Tour Dates

Peter Gabriel  has announced 13 new shows, including dates in Dallas, Austin, Pittsburgh, Denver and several other North American cities. The concerts join the previously announced dates for the U.S. leg of the former Genesis  singer's first tour since 2014. You can see the complete list of tour dates below.

General on-sale tickets will be available on March 24; a presale will be available at Peter’s Fan Club mailing list, beginning March 21. More information can be found on Gabriel's website .

The upcoming trek could find Gabriel taking advantage of an idea he's been cultivating for 50 years. He recently told Yahoo  that he'd like to mount a stage show based on life-sign readings from artists as they perform. The singer explained that it would involve “three outputs from each musician – one: their music; two: their body; three: their brain,” which could be used to control lights and image projections.

Technology, including AI, has progressed to the point that Gabriel's original visions are now more feasible and he's not intimidated by the onslaught of artificial intelligence. "We might as well just grab the algorithms and dance with them, rather than fight them," he said. "Unfortunately, I don’t think my job or anyone’s job is safe from AI. The way to look at it, though, is this amazing tool kit is just coming into our possession and we could do all sorts of extraordinary things, including perhaps – and I do say ‘perhaps’ – protecting our future.”

Gabriel is set to release i/o later this year, his first album of new originals since 2002's Up . Three songs, " Panopticon , " The Court " and " Playing for Time ," have been released to date. Gabriel plans to release new songs during each new full moon of 2023. Even as he works to wrap up the current record, he's got other ideas brewing. "If I have the stamina, I may just keep going," he told Uncut . "I'm an awkward sod. I like doing things differently if I can."

Peter Gabriel at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI

Peter Gabriel @ LCA, Detroit | Photo by Jena McShane

Peter Gabriel did what he does best by combining insane musical talent and stunning visuals for an amazing show at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Fans have waited a long time to see the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (solo and Genesis). It was his first visit to the Detroit area since he last played the now-demolished Palace of Auburn Hills in 2016. And even though Gabriel is now pushing past 70, he proved that he can still entertain like none other.

An analog clock was displayed on a large circular screen above the stage as fans filtered into the stadium taking their seats. Peter Gabriel walked onto the stage as it struck 8:00 PM and sat with his keyboard on his lap alongside bassist Tony Levin around a campfire scene. The two of them then performed “Here Comes the Flood” from Gabriel’s self-titled debut solo album.

The rest of the band then joined around the campfire to play “Growing Up” as the large circular screen showed a full moon overhead and transitioned through each phase before the song came to a close. This was an important detail, not just for setting a beautiful scene but because Gabriel has been releasing each song from his new album, i/o , on a full moon.

Gabriel’s bandmates then rose up and took their normal places on the stage as the crew, dressed in orange prison jumpsuits, cleared the set. Gabriel, who is well-known for artfully combining brilliant visuals into his tours, mentioned that he worked with renowned visual artists to create special artwork to correspond with each song in the show.

From that point on, Gabriel kept fans on their toes by reserving about half of the show for new material from the i/o album while also strategically giving the crowd a taste of the classics at opportune moments. Similarly, his backing band also mixed in longtime staples like bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, and Manu Katche on drums while also incorporating fresh faces.

On the song “IOIO,” Josh Shpak on trumpet combined with violinist Marina Moore and cellist Linnea Olsson to create an orchestral effect that had the crowd chanting along to the chorus. That was followed up with “Digging in the Dirt” from 1992’s Us album.

Just before the first set came to a close, Gabriel brought out “This is Home,” the latest i/o single that was released only hours earlier. It featured artful layers of strings, bass, and rhythmic drums in a classic Peter Gabriel style and received a strong response from the crowd. But when the signature horn section from “Sledgehammer” blasted out through the arena, fans jumped to their feet to cheer as they watched Gabriel, Levin, and Rhodes strut in unison to the beat.

After a lengthy intermission, it was more mixing of classic hits with new material. On “Don’t Give Up,” Linnea Olsson left her cello behind to take on the role of Kate Bush in the duet. Then on “Red Rain,” Manu Katche showed why he’s been drumming with Gabriel for the past 30 years.

The second set was capped off with “Solsbury Hill” followed by an encore of “In Your Eyes,” with the crowd eagerly singing along to both. Fans might have thought that the entire band had taken their final bow of the night, but Gabriel then came back out for a second encore and explained that “Biko” was a tribute to the South African anti-apartheid activist who died in police custody, and he dedicated the song to all of those who continue to fight for freedom.

While Peter Gabriel doesn’t tour that often anymore, he reminded his fans in Detroit that he still has the voice, the energy, and the creative production talent to put on one hell of a show that can rival – both musically and visually – any of his previous work.
