The Land Between Seas

Destination Must-See's

Panama ms1

Panama Canal:

The Panama Canal is a 48-mile waterway constructed by the United States and opened back in 1914. Its sequence of locks and passages links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, providing a vital conduit for international maritime trade. Visitors travel great distances to see this wonder of the modern world at work.

Panama ms2

Anton Valley:

As the world’s only inhabited volcanic crater, Anton Valley is certainly a unique location. Its rich volcanic soil and year round spring-like weather creates the perfect environment for plants, animals and humans to thrive. The valley offers amazing scenery and many natural attractions like the “square trees,” waterfalls, and thermal pools.

Panama ms3

Folklore and dance shows:

The heartland of Panama is where some of the best-known styles of Panamanian folk music and dance originate. With a rich tradition in the arts, it’s very common to witness people listening and dancing to the folklore music. Women dress in swirly embroidered dresses and men in striking embroidered shirts with cut off pants. It makes for a spectacular display of color, culture and tradition that everyone should experience.

Panama ms4

Experience life in the rainforest while enjoying the unsurpassed luxury of a beautiful resort hotel. Surrounded by Soberania National Park, the Charges River and the Panama Canal, the Gamboa Rainforest Resort has easy access to Panama City and the magnificence of jungle flora. Look out over your hotel balcony and you just might see monkeys, sloths, toucans, butterflies and other rainforest dwellers passing by.

Destination Must-Do's

Panama md1

Embera Indigenous village:

The Embera people have lived in the jungles of Chagres for generations. Their fascinating culture is rich with traditional dances and music, but they’re also very knowledgeable about medicinal plants. The skill of the Embera natives also extends to the use of natural pigments to paint the skin, basket weaving and boat making. Visitors usually leave the village sporting a temporary tattoo and toting a beautiful hand-crafted souvenir.

Panama md2

Shop for Panama hats:

Lightweight, breathable and classic, Panama hats are associated with tropical heat and seaside retreats. But these hats are more than just fashionable accessories. The wearing of a Panama hat is a deeply rooted Ecuadorian cultural heritage but made famous when sold to North Americans in Panama, a hub of commerce and trade in the 19th century.

Panama md3

Panamanian Cigars:

Even though the cigar makers of Panama follow the same process as Cuban cigar makers, Panamanian cigars have their own unique and authentic flavor that distinguishes them from other nation’s cigars. There are many cigar manufacturers in Panama that hand roll their cigars and take great pride in their craft, much like Cuba.

Panama md4

Oxcart ride:

Traditionally, oxcarts were used to carry supplies from place to place. Each cart was unique and had its own painting and decorations as well as its own “song.” Over the years, oxcarts have been replaced by other means of transporting supplies, but they remain an important part of Panamanian heritage and can still be found in service. In some villages, visitors can hitch a ride on one and take a tour.

Geography and environment.

Bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Panama shares land borders with   Colombia   and   Costa Rica .

With a typical tropical climate and environment, Panama has an abundance of rainforest, jungle, mangroves, islands, beaches and natural harbors.

There are around 500 rivers flowing through Panama, this Central American land - full of biodiversity - also has mountain ranges that dramatically cut through the mainland.

Though many of Panama's mountains have volcanic origins, most are considered dormant and pose no threat to residents.

Best time to visit Panama

Most of Panama revels in a tropical climate with year-round high temperatures and humidity.

Travelers tend to visit during the dry season from around mid-December to mid-April, as the wet season (from May to November) usually results in sudden, frequent downpours mixed with bursts of sunshine.

As with most other countries, the weather is cooler at high altitudes and much warmer in the lowlands.

Top 5 brilliant beach spots of Panama

1. starfish beach.

This small beach in the stunning Bocas del Toro area is named for the hundreds of vibrant starfish that live here year-round. A walk along the peaceful shore will reveal colonies of huge orange and red starfish lurking quietly beneath the water.

2. Zapatillas Cays

Another of Bocas del Toro's beauties, these two postcard-worthy islands are home to seriously stunning beaches with crystalline water, powdery white sand, and coral reefs teeming with turtles and fish.

3. Isla Coiba

This rugged, Pacific coast nature reserve is rich in an incredible range of species, making it a wonderful place for divers and snorkellers out to spot a host of creatures. Marlin, swordfish, groupers, rays, sharks, and eels can all be found within the coral reefs surrounding the area, and the clear water only makes spying them all the easier.

4. Playa Chiquita

This rough and remote wonder located on the Caribbean Coast is one of Panama's best-kept secrets. Its isolated location means it's a little difficult to get to, but the tranquillity, space, and natural beauty make the journey worthwhile. Don't expect beach bars and boutiques - just long stretches of sand with few people in sight. Beach bliss!

5. Isla Grande

This laidback Caribbean island offers an authentic slice of Caribbean life for those wishing to escape the more frequented tourist spots. Featuring beaches speckled with leaves and palm fronds, and small shacks selling fruity cocktails and fresh beers, this haven hand delivers relaxation Caribbean-style.

"San Blas islands are really amazing. Chichime has few tourists compared to some of the other islands. The first night I was the only tourist on the island. The hosts are preparing fresh seafood for lunch and dinner and one boat trip for visiting other islands and to go snorkelling was included. Accomodation is simple, but beautiful with electricity only a few hours in the evening. The drive from Panama City to the jetty is very scenic and during the boat trip you pass some very beautiful islands. Overall an amazing trip.

Mr. & Mrs. G.S., Ormond Beach, Florida
"This was our third Caravan tour and once again, it was wonderful. The detailed schedules and activities allow us to enjoy the tour with no concerns about logistics. Thanks to our Director and the many people helping with the tour, we learned a lot, experienced wonderful opportunities, and enjoyed local culture." Mr. & Mrs. M.L., Brussels, Wisconsin
"Panama is a spectacular place. The hotels were beautiful, the last one being the best I’ve ever stayed in. The food and drink was great. "I selected this trip as an alternative to taking a cruise which visited the canal. What’s not to like about this trip? It totally went beyond my expectations. It provided so much more than the cruise we were considering. I am glad I found Caravan to give you a try. Our party of four would at dinner each night, review and evaluate the day, giving each other a high point or low point of the day. This evening, raise a glass of wine with your fellow travelers and enjoy a congenial welcome dinner.  Meals B+L+D

Through the Canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic

Gamboa Rainforest Resort - Canal Zone, Panama

Today’s complete transit of the Panama Canal begins from the Flamenco Marina. Enjoy the skyline view of the capital from the Bay of Panama before passing under the Bridge of the Americas to enter the Canal. Transiting through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks here on the Pacific side of the Canal will raise our sightseeing vessel nearly 90 feet in three distinct steps. From here, we’ll cruise through the Culebra Cut that was excavated to create this passage through the Continental Divide. Reaching the Atlantic side of the Canal, you’ll descend 85 feet through the Gatun Locks and continue to port where you’ll disembark. Then we’ll take you to the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve where riverview balcony rooms have been reserved for our guests.  Meals B+L

Gatun Lake Nature Expedition

After breakfast, you’ll join our expert naturalist for a guided boat excursion on to the calm waters of Gatun Lake. Venturing close to some of Gatun’s many lush and uninhabited islands, you’ll have a chance to learn about this unique eco-system; created during the construction of the Canal, it’s the second largest artificial lake on the planet. With sharp-eyes, this enriching excursion offers a chance to observe some of the region’s indigenous species including exotic tropical birds, crocodiles, caimans, sloths, and families of capuchin, howler and white-face monkeys.   Back at Gamboa, you’ll visit the resort’s ecological exhibits. Native orchids, colorful butterflies and rare frogs are among the flora and fauna that you will see and learn about. At the Sloth Sanctuary, you’ll gain insight into the work being done by the Pan American Conservation Association to protect this amazing creature. After your guided touring, the balance of this day is at leisure for you to enjoy the pristine rainforest setting and amenities of our resort.  Meals B

Through the Forest to an EmberĂĄ Village

Today’s adventure begins with a scenic one hour drive to the edge of Gatun River where EmberĂĄ villagers will meet you with their dugout canoes. Traveling silently up the Gamboa River and deeper into the forest offers a chance to spot herons, egrets and ospreys. With a bit of luck and sharp eyes, you might also see toucans, otters and sloths. Stepping ashore in their village, you’ll have time to explore the community, with your guide on-hand to offer information and insight.   As you engage with the villagers, you’ll learn first-hand about their cultural traditions, cuisine and language – much of which can be traced to ancestors who migrated from Colombia’s ChocĂł region in the late 1700’s. Informal presentations will deepen your insight into their daily life, tribal history and enduring ways – from their shamanic rites to dance and music. After lunch with the villagers, you might join a tribal elder for a nature walk to learn about their medicinal use of indigenous rainforest plants. This evening, sit down to an Ă  la carte dinner with wine at the Chagres River View Restaurant .  Meals B+L+D

Historic Portobelo + Our Pacific Resort

Westin Hotel - Playa Bonita, Panama

Bid goodbye to the rainforest and wind your way through the tropical forest alongside the Canal, where you’ll catch superb views of the Canal and its ship traffic.  Visit the Panama Canal Expansion Center where, from the Observation Deck 164 feet above ground, you’ll have an enthralling view of the recently-expanded Canal. Opened to traffic in 2016, this new waterway and third set of locks literally doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal, which can now accommodate massive ships up to 1,400 feet long and 180 feet wide. After a Caribbean lunch, you’ll explore Portobelo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its wealth of history and the ruins of Colonial-era fortifications, many with their ancient cannons still in battle-ready position. You’ll also visit the 17th-century Customs House and see the revered Cristo Negro statue which appeared mysteriously in Portobelo in the mid 1600’s. After sightseeing, we’ll take you to our deluxe Pacific beach resort where oceanview rooms have been reserved for A+R guests.  Meals B+L

The Many Facets of Panama City

A full day of guided exploration begins on the city’s efficient and modern Metro, a great way to experience daily life. Touring the Afro-Antillean Museum, you’ll find well-curated exhibits that tell the story of the nation’s West Indian community, including their historic role in building the Panama Railroad and Canal. Not far away, you’ll also visit El Carmen Church, built in Neo-Gothic style and revered as one of the city’s most beautiful churches. At the BioDiversity Museum, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, you’ll learn how Panama’s vital role as a land bridge between North and South America has impacted biodiversity and human life on both Continents.   Then join city residents shopping at the lively fish market and visit with one of the vendors, pausing to sample some ceviche and local beer. For lunch, we’ll take you to a local restaurant where traditional Panamanian dishes are prepared and served with gastronomic flair. The day’s sightseeing ends with a tour through the archaeological ruins at Panama Viejo c . Founded in 1519, this was the earliest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Return to our deluxe Pacific resort in the late afternoon where the evening is free to enjoy and dine as you wish.  Meals B+L

A Day in the Countryside

Another genuine experience of daily Panamanian life is yours this morning as you step aboard one of the region’s Diablos Rojos – buses that have been custom painted with colorful, often narrative murals. It’s a popular and fun way to get around! Then we’ll take you into the lofty hills of Altos de Campana National Park. Founded in 1966 as Panama’s first national park, it’s only an hour’s drive from the capital; but for all of its natural beauty and appeal, it remains relatively unknown by most travelers and even among some Panamanians. Surrounded by cool rolling mountains that descend to the Pacific Ocean, you’ll travel all the way to one of the Park’s highest points for sweeping views of the Canal Basin and Chame Point with its groves of mangrove forest. Altos de Campana is home to a variety of exotic birds like the orange-bellied trogon and white-tailed hawk, making this Park a great destination for bird watchers.   At a nearby orchid farm, you’ll learn about their cultivation of these delicate plants and sample some of the tropical fruits that are also grown here. For lunch we’ll take you to a popular local fonda ; these typical countryside restaurants are known for their fine farm-to-table Panamanian food – and chilled local beer! Back at the Westin resort, you’ll have time to relax or even go for a swim before freshening up for this evening’s Farewell Dinner. Enjoy the fine cuisine of our 5-star resort and toast your fellow travelers with a glass of wine.  Meals B+L+D

Boquete, Panama

Boquete, Panama

Boquete, Panama - Video Tour, Cost of Living and Best Things To Do

The district of Boquete (pronounced boh-KEH-theh) is nestled in the highlands of western Panama , in the fertile province of Chiriquí (pronounced chee-ree-KEE). Home to just over 23,000 people, it’s a retirement haven for expats looking for a simpler lifestyle.

Boquete is a microcosm of bliss. The mountain region offers breathtaking vistas, with lush greenery and flowers blanketing the hills in a kaleidoscope of colors. In the distance you can see the stunning VolcĂĄn BarĂș—Panama’s one sleeping volcano—rising up through the clouds. The Caldera River flows through the main village—like the district, the town is called Boquete, though its full name is Bajo Boquete, or “lower Boquete,” as it sits in a verdant valley.

As the country's most mountainous region, Boquete also offers uniquely different microclimates throughout the area. The south offers warmer, dryer temperatures while the more mountainous northern area offers cooler, breezier temperatures ideal for growing some of Panama's finest coffee.

With elevations of 2,600 to 4,000 feet, the Boquete region’s cool climate draws Panamanians and expats alike, with 20% of the population being expats. Daytime temperatures are generally in the 70s F or low 80s F, with nights typically above 60 F. The spring-like weather makes Boquete the ideal place for its active, outdoorsy population. The dry season lasts from mid-December to mid-April, and the rainy season lasts from mid-April to mid-December. Afternoon rains are called "bajareque.”

Boquete is only 40 minutes from David, Panama’s third largest city with a population just under 82,000, via a well-paved four-lane road. David is the commercial hub of the region, with shopping, restaurants, and all the services you might need, from government offices to medical providers. Two top-rated private hospitals offer affordable and accessible healthcare to residents of Boquete and all of Chiriquí province.

Boquete’s privileged location is only about an hour’s drive from the nearest beach. The Gulf of Chiriquí forms the province’s southern border, and there are several beach areas along this stretch of Pacific coastline. It’s easy to grab your swimsuit, pack up your cooler, and head out for a day of fun in the sun.

Mountains, beaches, national parks
the Chiriquí region truly has it all. And that includes acres and acres of fertile farmland. Known as Panama’s breadbasket, this province grows some 80% of the country’s produce. Orange trees dot the slopes and the rich, aromatic coffee beans grown here consistently rank among the world’s best, including it's world-famous and highly sought-after Geisha variety. From the spiky tops of its sweet juicy pineapple to vines heavy with heirloom tomatoes, Chiriquí is a land of plenty.

With so much to offer, it’s easy to see why Boquete has a well-established, active expat population. Boquete's first inhabitants came from other areas of Panama, as well as other countries such as Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, and North America. Today you will make friends from Canada, the U.K. Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia. Expansive mountain views and a spring-like climate
abundant fresh produce, fish, and everything else you could want for a healthy lifestyle
a near-endless variety of social events and activities
it may well be perfect for you.

Retire in Boquete, Panama

©iStock/Markpittimages

Boquete has long been considered one of the top places in the world to retire
and rightly so.

Thousands of contented expats already enjoy a laidback, low-cost life in the area—surrounded by abundant wildlife, brightly colored orchids, and fertile farmland.

Resting in a bowl-shaped hollow, the main village is small yet well-served by grocery stores, a variety of restaurants, pharmacies, banks, bakeries, hardware and clothing stores, a library, and a gym. Nature-lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will find this region has everything to offer. One can find tai chi, yoga, and meditation offered in the newly developed Central Parque. There are numerous trails and national parks, and the cloud forest is rich in wildlife
you can spot countless colorful birds, massive old-growth trees, and pristine waterfalls. The very fit and adventurous undertake the grueling hike to the freezing top of BarĂș, Panama’s one volcano and highest peak, it’s over 11,000 feet tall.

One of the biggest benefits of living in Boquete is being able to take advantage of Panama’s Pensionado program—the best program of its kind in the world. The main requirement is that you have verifiable a pension of at least $1,000 per month, and the application process is quick and easy. Become a member and you’ll gain access to a host of discounts on all kinds of daily living expenses.

Pensionados get 15% to 20% off hospital visits, consults, and medication; 25% off domestic airline fares and meals at local restaurants; 30% off bus, boat, and train fares; and 50% off entertainment, including movies, plays, sporting events, and concerts.

The discounts make a real difference for many retirees, who see their retirement income stretch farther and can enjoy a higher quality of daily life—like eating out regularly at Boquete’s wide range of restaurants. For a bargain lunch, the local Panamanian cafeteria offers a buffet of local food items for a full plate at just a few dollars.

If it’s music, art, and culture you’re looking for then this little town certainly won’t disappoint. In recent years, Boquete has become the cultural hub of western Panama. Retirees looking to get creative can enroll in one of the many drawing and painting classes, join a photography club, or check out the frequent art exhibits at the Boquete Public Library. Boquete is also know for it's annual Jazz Music Festival and local theater company.

Civic groups, social organizations, and volunteer services have a huge presence in Boquete as well. Locals and expats work side-by-side in the Rotary and Lions Club, and to raise funds for groups that help children, families, and animals in the community.

You can also relax with some golf at the luxurious Valle Escondido Resort or Lucero Country Club. For some personal pampering, choose from several world-class, full-service spas that offer therapeutic massages, fitness programs, and beauty treatments.

Many retirees say they feel better after living in Boquete for a time. For some, their less stressful lifestyle means lower blood pressure and less medication. For others, being active year-round
living in an area where it’s customary to walk and there aren’t fast food restaurants on every corner
means losing weight is easy. It just happens, often without your noticing.

Another reason is all the fresh food available in the Chiriquí highlands, known as “Panama’s breadbasket.” Fruit and vegetables are abundant and inexpensive at local markets, and dairy farms and ranches produce farm-fresh eggs. Fish and meats for your table come fresh from the sea or the butcher, not filled with preservatives. Strawberries from a local street vendor, topped with delicious fresh cream, are a bargain at $4

Lifestyle in Boquete, Panama

©Victoria Harmer

Painters, musicians, photographers, actors, artists, and crafters will all feel welcome in Boquete and the rest of ChiriquĂ thanks to pristine natural surroundings and a variety of cultural offerings.

Villages like Bajo Boquete, Alto Boquete, Los Naranjos, Jaramillo, Caldera—and many more—retain a relaxed, small-town feel. Everything is more cheerful and natural. Local men often wear traditional guayabera shirts and handcrafted sombreros or hats. Women of the Indigenous NgĂ€be-BuglĂ© tribes—they have autonomous rule over vast reservelands abutting ChiriquĂ province—wear colorful shifts adorned with traditional geometric patterns. They mingle comfortably with expats and tourists, typically ready to offer or respond to a buenos dĂas when you pass them on the sidewalk.

During the summer months (December through April), festivals include the flower and coffee fair known as La Feria de las Flores y del Café or simply La Feria de Boquete, and the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival that brings in performers from around the world. The music festival is a lively event that usually sells out. It takes place in various indoor and outdoor venues, including the Boquete Community Players Theater, which also hosts a busy weekly market.

Activities in this part of the world are more pastoral, making for a relaxed lifestyle in Boquete. You can tour the coffee plantations, take a ride on horseback, go white-water rafting or rock climbing, or relax with a spot of birdwatching. Hiking is a favorite activity, and trails range from very easy to the very challenging BarĂș Volcano trail (you should only undertake this with a local guide). Many who choose to live here report that their health improves as a result of their active lifestyle and outdoor pursuits, which they enjoy all year-round.

The highland town has also become a focal point for foodies and alternative health aficionados. Numerous small businesses offer delicious delicacies, such as European-style breads, hand-made chocolates, locally-sourced honeys, organically produced smoked sausages, and more. There’s even a micro-brewery in town.

To help maintain your healthy lifestyle you may visit one of Boquete’s spas for a massage, facial treatment, or another personal pampering session. You’ll find classes of all types, from yoga, Pilates, and Zumba to tai-chi and balance training. Those seeking spiritual experiences, life coaching, or other forms of personal guidance and enrichment will find plenty of options within the Boquete community.

And while you can manage without speaking Spanish in this part of Panama, there are two full-fledged Spanish schools in Boquete as well as private tutors and classes. Making the effort to communicate in the local language and being able to have a simple conversation can enhance your life experiences greatly.

Boquete has long been a popular destination for nationals and foreigners, and so there are plenty of places to stay and eat out. Quaint hostels, boutique hotels, local and international cuisine...there’s something for everyone. You can fill up on hearty comida típica (typical food) of roasted chicken, with rice, beans, and a salad for a few dollars. A number of mid-range choices offer burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and soups. For a special occasion, you’ll find dining rooms serving French, Peruvian, international, and fusion cuisine with excellent wines.

What many retirees soon discover about Boquete is that your lifestyle choices are almost unlimited. Maybe you prefer quiet days at home, away from the noise, looking out at the lush scenery. Maybe you love to be busy, taking part in events and activities every day. Or maybe your sweet spot is somewhere in between. Whatever it is, you’ll find it in Boquete.

Real Estate in Boquete, Panama

©Victoria Harmer

Although prices have risen here over the years, real estate in Boquete remains relatively affordable. Because it is a popular location there is an excellent variety of real estate available. The town has both modern housing and traditional wooden cabins, as well as a smaller range of apartments. With the help of a reputable realtor and a willingness to explore, you can find just the thing to suit your wants, needs, and budget.

For instance, a three-bedroom, two-bath house in one of Boquete’s most desirable areas can be found for $225,000. A house here will offer views of the volcano and a nice backyard patio. A similar sized property at a higher elevation, with half an acre of land overlooking the town, will set you back about $400,000.

If you prefer a low-maintenance option you’ll find nice condominium selections here, too. Just outside of town in a desirable neighborhood there are two-bedroom, two-bathroom, fully furnished condos that can be bought for between $139,000 to $156,000, with monthly fees of just $50.

Keep in mind that many household expenses are low in Boquete, so your cost of living is low, too. In the highlands you won’t pay any heating or air conditioning bills. Many newer homes are exempt from property taxes for a few years or subject to new low taxes of 0.6% or less. Homeowner’s insurance is affordable, as is household help, such as a gardener or housekeeper.

Many newcomers prefer to rent for a time, and the good news is that you can rent a house for as little as $650 a month in and around Boquete.

Of course, there are many luxury homes in the highlands, too—custom-built homes with all the extras you could possibly want. For $540,000 you can own a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in one of Boquete’s most prestigious gated communities, complete with a golf course, tennis and spa.

When it comes to finding a place to live, there’s something for every budget in Boquete.

Climate in Boquete, Panama

©iStock/Markpittimages

One of the best things about living in Boquete is the climate
just ask the people who live there. Some call it “eternal springtime,” while others just call it perfect.

Elevation is the key to Boquete’s exceptional climate. Situated on the eastern-facing slope of BarĂș Volcano, it’s one of Panama’s sought-after highland destinations. Several towns located along the Cordillera Central mountain range share cooler temperatures and abundant rain, resulting in lush, colorful foliage. Another feature of these highland hamlets is the bajareque—a gentle mist that regularly floats down to the hills, often followed by a rainbow. Lower elevation towns such as David may be 10 to 15 degrees warmer and noticeably dryer than Boquete and her sister highland locales.

The temperature range in and around Boquete is stable throughout the year. The average low temperature hovers around 60 F. High temperatures range from 79 F to 87 F yielding an average of 83 F. These comfortable temperatures are the reason so many expats and retirees settle in Boquete. A blanket may feel cozy on chilly nights, and a ceiling fan will keep the air moving on warm days. But most homes have no heating or air conditioning, keeping utility bills low.

This lack of extremes is a real benefit in Boquete. Of course there’s no snow, freezing rain, or ice, so there’s no need to worry about bursting pipes or blizzards. While rain is common, the most severe weather likely to occur in Boquete is a thunder and lightning storm or flooding of low areas near the river. Most days here, you see the sun.

The BarĂș Volcano in ChiriquĂ province of western Panama is the country’s highest peak at 11,400 feet, and its only volcano. It last erupted some 500 years ago and has been quiet ever since. Being along the Pacific Rim means the country does have seismic activity including tremors, mostly centered off its southern or Pacific coast. To date serious documented earthquakes have been rare.

Rather than having four distinct seasons, in Boquete the year is divided into just two seasons. Summertime, here known as the dry season, starts in December and runs through April and is characterized by low rainfall and high winds. The wet or green season, from May through November, brings frequent rain and cloud cover. Heavy downpours tend to occur from August through November.

Even during the rainy season there’s plenty of sunshine. Many days start out bright and clear, with crisp, blue skies and clean, white clouds. Morning is the time to get your chores and errands done. Later in the day the clouds gather, the light fades, and the rain arrives. It may last for hours or for minutes
it may be a drizzle or a deluge
but it cools the air and nourishes the fertile earth, keeping Boquete lush and green.

Cost of Living in Boquete, Panama

You can live comfortably in Boquete for very little. Life here is naturally inexpensive.

Monthly Budget Breakdown for Boquete, Panama:

No matter where you’re originally from, you’re likely to save here on everything from low electricity use (thanks to the perfect climate) to healthcare. Expats here frequently find their cost of living in Boquete is 30% to 40% lower than it was in the U.S. or Canada.

Known worldwide for growing excellent coffee, Boquete is home to dozens of small coffee farms. If you come to Boquete, you owe yourself a coffee tour. Many of the farms have tours where you can learn about the growing process, harvesting, and even taste some samples. Most tours are around $30 or under. Many of the tour companies in town provide transportation for the tour but it isn’t necessary. Most farms are only a cab drive away.

The Loop Drive

For a developed appreciation of the surrounding lush hillsides above Boquete, you should not miss an opportunity to take one of the few loop drives that circle the upper rim of the valley. Each only takes about 45 minutes to an hour and gives you stunning vistas of the area and the volcano. The loop road with the river is a personal favorite of mine. Beginning at the church at the end of town, stay to the left. You will be going up in elevation surrounded by coffee plantations and even further up you will find yourself driving through dense lush jungle areas. The road curves to the right and as you begin to descend you will see the Caldera River on your right. The San Ramon waterfall is on your left and there is room to pull over and take a photo. Further along you will come upon Los Ladrillos. This is a basalt rock formation formed over 500 years. It is amazing to see, and rock-climbing enthusiasts love to test out their skills here.

The Tuesday Market

©iStock/Markpittimages

To get an idea of just what Boquete offers, there is nothing better than experiencing the Tuesday Market. At the BCP Theater every Tuesday, a farmers’ market of sorts sets up for the morning. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. you can find everything from organic produce, handmade jewelry, soaps, cheese, tasty treats, handicrafts, and more sold by locals and the expats. It’s a way to get together to socialize and support each other. Each Tuesday at 10 a.m. the small theater hosts a speaker for an hour long talk. Subjects are varied and interesting usually having to do with topics expats would like to hear about. Admission is free.

Los Cangilones de Gualaca

About a 45-minute drive from Boquete is one of the best swimming spots around. This beautiful location is where locals hang out on hot summer days. In the small town of Gualaca lies a portion of the Esti River which flows through a narrow canyon and opens into a calm swimming hole. Locals and some visitors try jumping into the narrow canyon. Other visitors prefer just lazily floating in the refreshing natural pools in the river. The spot is perfect for a picnic with large flat rocks shaded by beautiful tropical vegetation. There are no facilities here. The entrance fee is $1.50 per car. It’s best to get to by car and easy to find. Find out more here Los Cangilones de Gualaca .

Getting to the Highest Point in Panama

©iStock/Angel Di Bilio

Leaving around 4 a.m., one tour company will take you in a 4 x 4 jeep for a two-hour, eight-mile drive to the top of Panama’s only volcano, VolcĂĄn BarĂș. The trip is extremely bumpy on this unpaved rough road. The road is steep and rocky but when you reach the top at around 6 a.m., you will witness the most spectacular sunrise and see both the Pacific and the Caribbean. This is a once in a lifetime experience. At an elevation of 11,398 feet, the top of VolcĂĄn BarĂș is the only place in the world where you can see two oceans in the same spot. Bringing along your camera and a warm coat are the two necessities on this trip. Beyond Adventure Tours also provides you with breakfast at the top with hot beverages to warm you up.

After your trip up VolcĂĄn BarĂș, you might find it nice to take advantage of one of the spas in Boquete. As Boquete has become a wellness retreat for many visitors and locals, there are a few wonderful spas in the town where you can relax and get a day’s pampering. Some of the best places to check out are Spa Boquete , Boquete Massage , Valle Escondido , and The Haven .

A new popular experience to try in Boquete is ziplining. The Boquete Tree Trek offers ziplining as part of their eco park. It’s a great way to experience the nature of the area seeing the jungle-like setting up close and personal. And, if you are lucky you might encounter monkeys and native birds, including the elusive quetzal. They also offer guided tours on their hanging bridge hike with views of the surrounding rivers, waterfalls, and flora and fauna.

Boquete Bees Tour

©iStock/MelindaRose

Recently, Boquete Bees, a coffee and honey producing farm, has started to give tours. There are a few tours to pick from but the most popular is the Bee and Butterfly Tour. You are led through the gardens full of flowers and butterflies. The educational walk will introduce you to the history of the bee keeping of Panama’s stingless bees as well as being able to taste several of the honeys the farm produces. And of course, they have lots of goodies in their shop for sale. It is located just outside of Boquete. You can easily drive or take a taxi from town.

Bob Dylan fans getting a chance to relive his 1974 tour with The Band on 27-disc set

N EW YORK (AP) — Bob Dylan fans who want to relive his 1974 concert tour with The Band will soon have an opportunity to do that — ample opportunity.

He is releasing a staggering 27-disc box set that includes full recordings of 27 of the 40 shows of that tour, Dylan’s theatrical return to the stage with the backing of the group with whom he made some of his most memorable music.

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings announced Tuesday that the set will be released on Sept. 20, and will retail for $129.98.

The box includes some 417 previously unreleased performances, the record company said. Fans who want a slightly smaller bite can buy a three-album highlights box on vinyl.

It’s definitely for completists: The set will contain 21 different versions of “Lay Lady Lay” alone. There was already a live album of songs from that tour, “Before the Flood,” that came out in the 1970s.

Dylan has never been shy about giving fans the chance to hear him. “The 1974 Live Recordings” will only be his third-largest box set — following the 47-CD complete album collection released in 2013 and the 36-CD set chronicling Dylan and the Band’s 1966 tour.

Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl

panama tour video

A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths.

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With 19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response on Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Belize. The eye of Beryl, still a Category 4 storm, raked Jamaica's coast Wednesday afternoon and was expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Thursday morning, before making landfall in the Yucatan on Friday morning.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts to the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.

Grenada prime minister discusses damage on Carriacou

In a briefing late Tuesday after spending more than two hours in a helicopter provided by the government of St. Lucia, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

"There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou; the mangroves are totally destroyed, the boats and the marinas significantly damaged," he said. "There is almost complete destruction of the electrical grid system in Carriacou. The entire communication system is completely destroyed."

However, Mitchell added, he'd been heartened by the volunteers "showing true Grenadian spirit" by arriving from other less damaged areas in boats and fishing vessels to begin delivering relief supplies to those affected.

Beryl damage updates

The following are the preliminary assessments Riley listed:

Carriacou, Grenada

  • The total population of 6,081 has been affected, so shelter is "a significant consideration."
  • Majority of homes and buildings have been extensively damaged
  • Communications have been significantly compromised

Petite Martinique, Grenada

  • Estimated 80% of the houses and buildings extensively damaged or destroyed
  • 900 people affected
  • Majority of the island is sheltering in place

Canouan, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • 100% of the island's population (12,600) has been affected
  • An estimated 90% of the houses were damaged, either extensively or destroyed
  • Police station in Charlestown lost its roof

Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Full population of 3,000 was affected by extensive damage
  • Estimated 98% of buildings, including houses badly damaged or destroyed
  • Airport control tower destroyed, hospital roof destroyed
  • Power plant received significant damage
  • Government assisting people who wish to evacuate

Mayreau, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Total population of 300 people affected
  • 90% of the housing stock and buildings have been damaged or destroyed

Palm Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Resort and desalination plant significantly damaged
  • More than 40 homes with damage, a number expected to rise
  • Confirmed significant damage to the fishing sector
  • More than 200 boats damaged
  • Significant damage to the coastal infrastructure, particularly along the south coast
  • Partial road obstruction
  • Significant damage on southern end

Trinidad and Tobago

  • Power outages
  • Water disruption on Tobago
  • Roadway blockages on both islands

Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • An estimated 10% of the homes and buildings suffered roof damage
  • Airport and runway are usable
  • Minimal damages reported

Mitchell, Grenada's prime minister, said the island's northernmost parish, Saint Patrick suffered significant damage. The parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint Mark and Saint John also suffered much more damage than the parishes of Saint George and Saint David.

"It is clear that agriculture has taken quite a battering. It is clear that many persons have lost their roofs," Mitchell said. "It is clear, in some instances, many people have lost their entire homes."
