Float the Wild and Scenic Owyhee River

Jordan Valley, Oregon

Point-to-Point

Description

Added by John Sunich

Unplug and spend a week on the Wild and Scenic Owyhee River. This beautiful and remote high desert river has garnered the nick name "Oregon's Grand Canyon" with its deep canyon walls, unique colorful geology, abundant wildlife, and great hiking opportunities.

Located in remote southeastern Oregon the Owyhee River offers an off the grid adventure through the high desert that you will not soon forget.  The 50 mile section of river from Rome to Birch Creek is usually boated between March and June when there is adequate runoff to support larger boats.  It can also be boated on low water years or later in the year in kayaks or pack-rafts.  The trip itself is typically completed over 4-6 days by private groups as well as the many outfitters that offer fully guided trips.

Along this section of river you will pass some of the most unique geology and colorful rock formations, ancient petroglyphs, abandoned ranches, caves, wildflowers, river-side hot springs, and abundant wildlife.  The Owyhee also offers one of the best birding experiences anywhere in the lower 48.   The corridor also has some wonderful side hikes to view the above mentioned attractions as well as to some beautiful vistas overlooking the canyon and river below.

Permits are self issued at the put-in and there are no assigned campsites on the Owyhee River.  Camps are first come first serve. During peak usage you are likely to find one or more of the camps you planned to stay at occupied.  Some camps are large enough for two parties to spread out but make sure that your neighbors are cool with that idea before unloading your boat.  It is a good idea to have a couple campsite options on your itinerary each day in case your planned sites are not available.

The rapids of the Owyhee can be described as pool and drop with some fun bouncy wave trains when the flows are above 1000 cfs. Once the river drops below 1000 cfs the river becomes much more technical as the rocks start emerging in the middle of the rapids making the float more challenging.  Make sure to check the USGS site  for real time river data when planning your trip.  Some of the major rapids to note on this section of river are:

  • Bulls Eye (IV) Mile 13
  • Read-it-and-Weep (III+) Mile 20.75
  • Artillery (III+) Mile 21.2
  • Whistling Bird (IV) Mile 31
  • Montgomery (IV) Mile 32.5
  • Nuisance (IV) Mile 37
  • Morcum Dam(III) Mile 37.5

Points of Interest

  • Weeping Wall (Mile 17.75) River left, coldwater springs dripping from a rock wall provide great location to refill water supplies
  • Ryegrass Hot-springs (Mile 23.75) River left, un-maintained hot-springs with small pool suitable for one person at a time.  Campsite on river left is limited to 1 night stay
  • Pruitt's Castle (Mile 24.75) A unique geological formation. Great spot to hike and explore.
  • Lambert Dome (Mile 25) A massive multi-colored dome which has light and dark layering.  Trail leading all the way to the top for those that love to hike.
  • Iron Point Canyon (Mile 31-35) Deepest canyon section of trip made of red and gray rhyolite rock.  Keep an eye out for nesting birds of pray high above on the cliffs.
  • Jackson Creek/Jackson Hole (Mile 37) Great camp and trail to explore up Jackson Creek to discover some unnamed waterfalls.  Area frequently inhabited by bighorn sheep.
  • Devil's Tower (Mile 42.75) A miniature version of the the more famous Devil's Tower .  Comes into view for a couple miles on the river.
  • Upper Greeley Bar (Mile 44) River Left, A Hot-springs wetland and campsite.  Camping is limited to 1 night.  Tread lightly as the wetlands in this area are critical breeding habitat for the Woodhouse and Western Toads.  Moor boats at campsite when using the hot-springs.
  • Pothole Arch (Mile 47.6) River left.  A short steep hike up to a natural rock arch.

The put-in located in Rome, OR is just off US-95 in the heart of a fertile agricultural area.  The first 5-6 miles of river are flat surrounded by farms and can be quite a bear if there is a strong upstream winds.  At around mile 6 the river enters a canyon where the wind is typically less of a factor.

The  takeout  at Birch Creek is located 49.5 miles downstream from the put-in.  The road out of the canyon requires four wheel drive and higher ground clearance due to the rough road and stream crossings.  During periods of heavy rain the road may be impassable due to deep water.

There is an alternate takeout located at Leslie Gulch 15 miles further down river but it requires a 9 mile long flat water paddle on Lake Owyhee.

Most boaters typically arrange their vehicle to be moved from the put-in to the take out using a shuttle service .

Unbelievable

Just did this stretch for the second time. Truly unreal experience drifting through those gnarly canyons. Logistics and weather can be a little tricky for this float but adds to the overall adventure.

Owyhee River Rafting

No river in the lower 48 states is more remote and wild than the Owyhee River . In 1984 the 120 miles of river within Oregon were designated by Congress and Wild & Scenic. In 2009, the upper Owyhee river sections in Idaho were also designated as part of the Federal Wild & Scenic Rivers Act . ROW Adventures has been operating trips on the Owyhee since 1980 and is one of the very few outfitters licensed and permitted to run the entire river ( bridging the states of Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon). For those seeking truly remote wilderness canyons where nature inspires, look no further. The spectacular beauty and lack of access are the reason we refer to the Owyhee and Bruneau rivers as the “Sistine Chapels of western canyonlands” and the description is fully deserved. With headwaters in Nevada, the river flows over 300 miles as it continues through the southwest corner of Idaho and southeast Oregon.

Undammed and free-flowing, the Owyhee is an early-season (April-June) desert river where life abounds.  Migratory birds, birds of prey, wildflowers, reptiles, and mammals make these canyons home.  You see eagles and falcons searing across the sky while otters play in the river and bighorn sheep scramble along the cliffs. The river flows through narrow, deep canyons of many nuanced colors, reaching up over a thousand feet to pierce the cobalt sky.

Each section of the Owyhee is unique, with a milder whitewater experience on the Lower and more extreme on the middle and upper reaches.  Our East Fork Owyhee River and South Fork Owyhee River adventures take you to the most remote river sections and are more expeditionary in nature, with most guests paddling inflatable kayaks.  We also take small 13’ rafts to carry kitchen and camp equipment.  If you would rather ride in a raft than paddle your own inflatable kayak, let us know as we can accommodate this as well.  The Middle Owyhee and Lower Owyhee trips are done in rafts that vary from 14-16’.

Much of the land surrounding the Owyhee was protected as Wilderness in 2009 and known as the Owyhee Canyonlands complex .  There are six separate Wilderness Areas including the North Fork Owyhee Wilderness, Owyhee River Wilderness, Big Jacks Creek Wilderness, Little Jacks Creek Wilderness, and the Pole Creek Wilderness.  In addition, in 2009, over 300 miles of mainstem and tributary river segments of the Owyhee and Bruneau were designated as Wild & Scenic under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, recognizing the truly outstanding wild character and qualities of these river canyons.

Owyhee River Whitewater Rafting

Owyhee River Kayaking

Owyhee River Whitewater Rafting Trips

  • Upper Owyhee East Fork and Main Stem - Idaho: 73 miles; 6 or 7 days. Class II-V with 2 portages
  • Upper Owyhee South Fork and Main Stem - Idaho:  68 miles; 6 or 7 days. Class II-V with 1 portage
  • Middle Owyhee – Oregon:   38 miles; 4 days.  Class III-V with 1 portage
  • Lower Owyhee – Oregon:  50 miles; 5 days.  Class II-IV

Upper Owyhee:

The East Fork and South Fork each begin their journey in Nevada, flow through the southwest corner of Idaho , and end in Oregon about eight miles from the Idaho/Oregon border. The two forks join to form the main stem so that the last few days of each trip cover the same “main stem” of the Owyhee as it flows from Idaho into Oregon. From the point where they join, the river continues through vertical-walled canyons and some of the most stunning river canyon scenery in the world.  On these upper reaches of the river, we normally have people paddle an inflatable kayak and we take a small support raft for much of the communal camping gear.

The East Fork flows 62 miles through deeply incised canyons of rhyolite, and because there are at least two portages on this section, very few people float it each year.  The launch point starts below the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, usually at Garat put-In. One of the most breath-taking views is found at the confluence of the East Fork and Battle Creek. There are long stretches of flat water and neck-bending cliffs that surround the river. Owyhee Falls is the first major obstacle and requires a portage.  Not far below that is Thread the Needle which sometimes requires another portage. Further downstream the East Fork joins the South Fork and the comes House Rock rapids. Next up is Cable Rapids, a class IV-V drop that has a short portage on river left at some water levels, or a longer portage on river right.  A remote take-out is found at Three Forks. This is a demanding trip with great reward.

The South Fork stretch is either 53 or 35 miles depending on the put-in point. Most trips start at the South Fork pipeline crossing.  While there are no portages on the South Fork itself, there are some fun, intermediate class III rapids including Devil’s Pinball and Sentinel.  Bull Camp is a favorite stop due to the historic stone cabins that tell stories of yesteryear. An old diversion dam is found just above the confluence with the East Fork Little Owyhee. These upper miles are in a broader canyon however, after a couple of days, as the river approaches the confluence with the East Fork through Juniper Basin, it narrows dramatically. The confluence of the East and South forks is one of the earth’s most jaw-dropping places that very few are lucky enough to see. House Rock rapids come just after the confluence followed by Bald Mountain rapids. The only big obstacle on this river journey comes when we reach Cable Rapids, a steep drop with a critical move that we usually portage.  After that, long stretches of flatwater with current bring us to our take-out at Three Forks.

Three Forks , where the Main stem, Middle Fork Owyhee, and North Fork Owyhee all join together marks the end of trips on the Upper Owyhee.

Middle Owyhee:

The end of the South Fork/East Fork trips at "Three Forks" is the start of the Middle Owyhee, a 38-mile trip that ends at Rome, Oregon.  We run these trips in rafts from 14’ to 16’ in length.  There are a number of very challenging Class IV-V rapids in this section.  First up is the Ledge, a class IV drop.  Half-Mile is a long Class IV drop with Raft Flip and Upper Rock Falls coming soon thereafter. Then comes Lower Rock Fall, Subtle Hole, Bombshelter Drop, and Sharks Tooth, all class III-IV drops. The most difficult rapid, a Class V called the Widowmaker, requires a portage, meaning we have to carry all the gear around the rapids and usually are able to let the rafts through on ropes.  Overall, this is a fairly intense whitewater trip best suited for those looking for high adventure. This is a much more challenging trip than the Lower Owyhee and, because of the portage at the Widowmaker, more difficult than the Bruneau .

Lower Owyhee :

This part of the Owyhee is the most approachable by a wide audience as the whitewater is mostly class II-III with a possible IV at certain levels.  We use 14’ and 16’ rafts in both oar and paddle configurations, depending on guest requests. Because there are no portages and the whitewater is intermediate, it's the most popular section of the Owyhee and it's common to see other groups. It’s popular not only because of the intermediate nature of the rapids but also because of the remarkable scenery, comparable to that of any of our National Parks.

The barely noticeable Rome, Oregon (that could have been built in a day) marks the beginning of five-day trips on the Lower Owyhee.  There is a wide variety of scenery on this section, starting out with a broad valley around Rome, and then entering a defined river canyon.  Some of the Class III rapids include Upset, Bulls Eye, Read-It-And-Weep, Artillery, and Whistling Bird.

The river eventually enters a dramatic canyon of sheer-walled rhyolite known as "Iron Point Gorge" where Rock Trap, Squeeze, and Montgomery Rapids are found.  There are spectacular geologic formations such as Lambert Rocks and endless hiking possibilities.  In addition to spring wildflowers, abundant birding, and a host of wildlife, there are a few hot springs in this section.

Camps are set on white-sand beaches among twisted juniper trees and sagebrush. And as your guides prepare the evening's meal, you might soak in a hot spring or hike up a canyon draw. As the evening settles in, you sit in awe as the rock pinnacles of the Owyhee River's hillsides become silhouetted against a colorful sunset. After dinner, sit around the glowing embers of the campfire under some of the darkest skies in the world where the Milky Way shines bright.

Owyhee River Rafting Multi-day

  • 4 or 5 days
  • Early season only (March-May)

TRIP DESCRIPTION

A rafting trip on the Wild & Scenic Owyhee River is a treasured experience for many intermediate to experienced rafters. There’s but a small window of time each year (March to late May) when the snowmelt makes for high water level flows. With that small window of opportunity, this trip is well sought after and popular.

The awe-inspiring desert scenery along the Owyhee is known as Oregon’s Grand Canyon and with good reason. Located in the far Southeast of Oregon, this is one of the most remote rafting trips O.R.E. runs.

Guests are awestruck by the steep walls of Iron Point Canyon and other walls, some well over 1,000 feet, that sport volcanic domes and sheer cliffs. One of the true secrets of the Owyhee River is the riverside hot springs that make camping a truly unique experience under the open sky.

Solid class III rapids like Bullseye, Whistling Bird, and Montgomery are scattered throughout the breathtaking canyons and sweeping vistas. Side hikes to places like Chalk Basin and Lambert Dome are often highlights of the trip for many. The Owyhee River is full of secrets; along the way see and visit historic native sites with petroglyphs, abandoned western ranches, and hidden caves.

Birds, fish, and wildlife are abundant in these canyons. You can often see Owyhee flamingos (aka Canadian geese), sandhill cranes, songbirds, shorebirds, and birds of prey. Redband trout and smallmouth bass are plentiful for those who like to drop lines. Always keep an eye out for playful river otters. These canyons are home to California bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, coyotes, badgers, cougars, and bobcats.

This river is on most people’s river wish list for a reason, we invite you to find out why.

Floating the Owyhee Canyonlands

Get ready for a unique adventure in one of the best-kept secret spots in North America – the Owyhee Canyonlands.

The Big Wide Open

The Owyhee Canyonlands is a vast landscape that embraces more than 3 million acres of public lands in Southwest Idaho, Eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. It’s an enormous, wide-open landscape punctuated by deeply incised canyons. It’s all-natural just like Mother Nature made it. No services anywhere. You’ll travel through these spectacular reddish-orange canyons in the best way possible – by raft — experiencing the grandeur of the place, mesmerized by rock spires and alcoves, hearing the classic descending call of canyon wrens as they fly overhead, and maybe seeing a majestic golden eagle glide along the canyon rim. California desert bighorn sheep roam all of the Owyhee canyonlands. If you happen to see a big ram or a group or ewes and lambs, it’s a genuine treat.

Far & Away has been running trips in the Owyhees for more than 38 years. We know the very best secret canyons to explore:

Lower Owyhee – Best for families and kids. Four-day trip. The Lower Owyhee features a mix of fun rapids, scenic canyons, side hikes at Pruitt’s Castle or Whistling Bird, hot springs, and relaxing smooth water.

Middle Owyhee – Rock and roll whitewater mixed with tranquility. Three-day trip. Below Three Forks, you’ll hit the first rapids in less than a mile. Your guides will run a rock garden in “Ledge” Rapids, and boom, you can take a deep breath and settle into enjoying the scenic Owyhee canyonlands. Two other big rapids will send the adrenaline meter into the red zone – Half Mile Rapids, a long rock garden, and “Widowmaker,” which thankfully can be portaged over giant boulders. Your guides may enlist your help to schlep gear across the rocks. In between rapids, you’ll enjoy the scenery in this reach, maybe do a little side-hiking, and relax in sweet campsites. This section is very remote, and you are not likely to see any other river parties along the way.

East Fork Owyhee – High adventure in the headwaters of the Owyhee River. Five-day trip. Our guests run the East Fork in inflatable kayaks, led by our guides. It has a mix of rapids, hundreds of S-turns and meanders bordered by thick willows, and several noteworthy Class 2 and 3 rapids. About two-thirds of the way through the trip, our guides will portage your boats around Owyhee Falls, a long, boulder-choked rapids with no discernable safe route. Once back on the water, you’ll run a few more Class 3 rapids before reaching the takeout at Crutchers Crossing. The East Fork also is also quite remote, and you may or not see any other humans during the trip.

South Fork – Mellow and relaxing. The South Fork is a three- six-day trip deep in the southern end of the Owyhee River drainage. Our guests run this section in rafts, inflatable kayaks, and canoe. The South Fork winds through many meanders inside a deep reddish-orange canyon punctuated by spires, columns, alcoves, and caves. The hardest part of running the South Fork are the lengthy drives to the river launch site and then from the takeout back to civilization.

Outstanding Remarkable Values

Wild & Scenic River Designation - October 19, 1984

Learn about the outstanding remarkable values that makes the Owyhee River such a special place and helped it to achieve protected status under the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act.

Cultural & Prehistoric

The Owyhee watershed would have provided the major source of water, fuel, food and protected campsites in the harsh environment of southern Oregon. Approximately 100 prehistoric campsites have been recorded on the lower segment of the Owyhee River between the Rome Launch Site and Burnt Creek Ranch. The "Hole in the Ground" petroglyph site is one of the most outstanding sites of its kind in eastern Oregon.

Rocks exposed along and adjacent to the Owyhee River range in age from the late Miocene to recent. From oldest to youngest, these groups consist of rhyolitic flows, basalt flows, sedimentary rocks, young lava and alluvial deposits. Benchlands were formed during a period of intensive volcanic activity. Lava flows filled the stream valleys, damming them and impounding large lakes. Thousands of feet of sediment were deposited in the lakes which were subsequently drained as streams eroded through the basalt dams.

Recreational

Outstanding recreation abounds in the canyon, including rafting, drift boating, kayaking, hiking, photography, nature study, fishing, hunting and camping. The Owyhee is recognized nationally as a prime early-season whitewater destination, popular for commercial and non-commercial river runners.

The canyons of the Owyhee River are dramatic, awe-inspiring landforms. Reddish-brown canyon walls, sharply contrasted by the colorful, eroded chalky cliffs, reach up to 1,000 feet above the pristine sagebrush and grass-covered and talus slopes that form the river's edge. Cliffs occasionally drop hundreds of feet directly into the river. The canyon rims are often eroded into a multitude of towering spires, while in other areas the canyon walls reach to the sky as fractured, blocky monoliths tinted with brilliant green, yellow and orange microflora.

The Owyhee River Canyon provides diverse habitat for over 200 species of wildlife. Birds are especially abundant, both in number of species and number of individuals. Swainson's, ferruginous and red-tailed hawks, as well as American kestrels and northern harriers are common, and prairie falcon and sharp-shinned hawks have been observed frequently. Golden eagles are abundant year-round, and bald eagles winter in the canyons.

Owyhee River

  • 4 or 5 Days
  • April - Early May

5 Day "Canyonlands" Wilderness Rafting Trip

Our journey into this region introduces us to a bizarre landscape of lava flows, and cliffs of both sandstone and granite found side by side. Our Lower Owyhee River trip offers spectacular scenery, good whitewater, and the chance to visit a rarely seen part of the United States. The Owyhee boasts a multitude of wildflowers and exotic birds living among the numerous hot springs and awe-inspiring cliffs rising more than 1,500 feet above the river.

Whitewater rafting in the lower Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness is an exciting river trip that keeps a fun pace throughout, great for the adventurous spirit and even families with kids 12 years or older.

Spectacular Views of this high dessert landscape that will remind you of the old west. This sedimentary canyon will amaze you with it’s unique beauty and rugged terrain. It is rare to encounter more than one or two other parties on these spring trips. Lupine, Indian Paintbrush, and other wild flowers abound. Prairie falcons, eagles, and other raptors soar overhead. Bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope may be seen scrambling over the rocky talus slopes.

Hiking opportunities abound everywhere you look, with great overlooks and side canyons full of high dessert flora and fauna.

Hot Springs – During the trip we visit several wonderful hot springs where we try to spend a night. Camps are set on sand beaches where you will gaze at dramatic geologic formations, some of which are similar to the Dakota badlands. There are plenty of hiking possibilities and plenty of camp time for relaxing, photography, and bird watching. The take-out at Birch Creek or Leslie Gulch depending on river conditions.

After an orientation and good night sleep in Boise.  We will have a shuttle van transport you to the put-in near the town of Rome, Oregon.  Here you will meet the guides followed by a safety talk at the river’s edge while your personal gear is loaded on the boats. At about 4:30pm “river time” camp will be waiting after you have had several miles of river fun. Your tent will be ready, and your sleeping pad inflated when you arrive. Enjoy Hors d’oeuvres about an hour before the main dinner course is served. A campfire after dinner and an astronomy lesson are the perfect bedtime rituals.

Our morning spread will be out at 7:00am that will include coffee, tea, coco and all your favorite fixins, breakfast is served around 8:00am. Pack up your personal gear while the guides make the kitchen disappear back into the boat. Enjoy a leisurely morning at camp, playing with the kids, going fishing or soaking up a book from our river library. At about 9:30am, the boats depart for a day of fun on the river. Learn about more historical sites, the geography of the river. Enjoy another gourmet lunch, go hiking or play a game of frisbee or just relax. The afternoon whitewater is full of excitement with class III to IV rapids around every bend.

GATEWAY CITY

Meeting location.

T he Lower Owyhee has been compared to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon National Parks but in the end it probably defies direct comparisons. The river is a land of hot springs and hoodoos, of towering bluffs and windswept plateaus, of jaw dropping beauty and awe inspiring loneliness. It is extremely remote, bizarrely beautiful, unpredictable, sometimes haunting, very wild, and rarely seen.

Why choose us on the Lower Owyhee?

Between the Lower and Middle Owyhee we run more trips than any other company. The river is a classic Momentum style adventure that highlights our guiding experience, attention to detail, and guest comfort. The Owyhee is remote with the kind of challenging logistics that we relish. We have built a reputation for innovative and comfortable camping in wilderness places and for creative menus featuring local and organic produce & products.

For Lower Owyhee trips with Momentum guests do not need to be experienced adventurer’s, athletes, or even to have ever touched a paddle or spent a night under the stars.  We truly love showing people this place!

The Owyhee in Travel Oregon Magazine

oregon-travel

The side hikes are world-class and for many provide some of the highlights of the trip. We visit places like Pruitt’s Castle, Chalk Basin, Jackson Creek, and Devils Tower. They provide panoramic views of this unique landscape and windows into the ancient history of the river canyon.

Our Lower Owyhee river trips are done with Momentums signature style, attention to detail, and handcrafted quality. With comfortable and innovative wilderness camping, creative menus, personal service and hospitality, one of the most experienced (and friendly) guide staffs in the world, and with all the little details and touches we are known for.  While the area is remote and the weather can be ever-changing, you do not need to be an experienced adventurer, an athlete, or to have spent a night under the stars to join us. Participants just need to be and excited to see one of the United State’s most unique river canyons.

This is a wilderness experience enjoyed by a privileged few, a magical place that is perfect for anyone wanting a once in a lifetime trip to a place less traveled.

Step 1 of 2

Bizarre, beautiful, and like no other, when the Owyhee River rushes to life, it’s one of the best spring rafting trips in the West with mild to intense whitewater, excellent wildlife viewing, and intriguing canyon scenery.

Our 6-day Owyhee River rafting trip is a guide favorite and an avid paddler’s dream trip through Southeastern Oregon’s Grand Canyon. A rarely-visited, but mesmerizing river, the Wild & Scenic Owyhee is a place where gleaming basalt bluffs cascade down to desolate, soft beaches speckled with the lure of undiscovered gemstones. And there’s wildlife everywhere. Eagles, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, and mountain lions are native to the region.

Due to a short window of raftable flows on the Owyhee, this Owyhee Canyonlands adventure is typically only available as an early-season rafting escape in April and May when water levels are at their peak.

Trip Highlights

  • Owyhee River rafting & comfortable catered camping in Southeastern Oregon
  • Raft, dory, and inflatable kayak options available
  • See eagles, antelope, bighorn sheep & even wild horses
  • Colorful basalt canyon walls & gemstone-dotted beaches
  • A great early spring trip in the pristine Owyhee Canyonlands

What to Expect

Itinerary & Map

Itinerary at a glance.

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Every trip is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, camp locations, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:

The Day Before Your Trip

The evening before your trip, we’ll meet for a pre-trip meeting in Boise, ID. This is an opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and trip leader, and ask any last-minute questions. The trip leader will also confirm the departure time for the following morning.

After grabbing breakfast on your own, the group will meet up first thing in the morning for a 3-hour drive southwest to Rome, Oregon. En route, we’ll stop for fishing licenses and any last-minute items in the town of Jordan Valley. At the river, we meet the rest of the crew. After an informative safety talk, we’re off on our river adventure!

Each morning, you’ll be greeted with hot coffee, tea, and cocoa and a hearty breakfast. After you pack your belongings, you’ll have some time to relax while camp is broken down and the boats are loaded before we launch on our Owyhee River rafting trip.

Our first day on the river brings rapids of varying sizes, including Artillery, which we usually stop to scout. As interesting clay and sandstone formations reveal themselves ahead, we enter into the moonscape terrain of the Owyhee Badlands region. Ideally, we’ll arrive at camp each afternoon with plenty of time to relax, explore, or chat with new friends as the guides prepare a delicious meal.

Whistling Bird rapid is the highlight for today. With a difficult hairpin turn against a dramatic cliff face, it’s a certain scout and great photo opportunity. From here, we enter a narrow section of river bounded by precipitous cliffs.

Further downstream, Lambert Rocks and Jackson Creek may entice us on extended walks up into colorful side canyons and along scenic overlooks. Small hot springs near the river add another interesting geologic dimension, and if we’re lucky, may provide the opportunity for a dip.

Today, there is more whitewater excitement, culminating with a wild Class IV chute. Afterward, we may visit Hole in the Ground Ranch, a historic remnant of the past.

At low water, Birch Creek is used for our take-out. In high water, we travel on to the Owyhee Reservoir, where we have a short motorboat tow to Leslie Gulch. The intensity of the colorful rock formations makes up for the lack of current as we cross the lake. From the take-out, it’s a 2.5-hour drive back to civilization and hot showers in Boise.

The number and variety of boats on an OARS trip will vary based on water levels, the number of participants, and other factors we take into account when planning your adventure. Please be aware that in doing so we will ask you to share boat time with your fellow travelers. We don’t assign boats, nor can we guarantee exactly which crafts we bring, but trust us to provide you with the best possible mix for you and others on your trip.

Learn more about the OARS Fleet and the boats that may be a part of your experience: Oar raft , dory (depending on water levels), inflatable kayak , or paddle raft .

After each active day on the river, we pull ashore to camp for the night. Our first task is to unload the boats using a fire-line of crew and guests to expedite the process. Individuals then collect their waterproof bags and locate an area on the beach to camp for the night.

While you put up your tent, the guides will set up the kitchen and central dining/seating area with camp chairs. They will also locate a secluded area away from camp to set up the portable toilet, where privacy is assured.

As guides prepare dinner, hors d’oeuvres are served. This is an opportunity to relax, enjoy a drink if you wish, and reflect on the day with your fellow traveling companions.

In the morning, the first wake-up call lets you know that coffee, hot water for tea or cocoa, juice, fresh fruit, and cold cereal are ready. You can fill your mug and grab a bite, then begin to pack up your personal belongings and sleep gear as the guides prepare breakfast.

After breakfast, the entire camp is broken down and packed up. Once the guides have all of the gear loaded back onto the boats, we’ll head downstream to see what new adventures await us.

More info about Meals & Dietary Restrictions can be found on our Trip Resources page.

The weather for early-season trips on the Owyhee can be unpredictable. One should be prepared for severe temperature shifts and the potential for snow and/or rain.
