Hiroyuki Fujita remains in control and continues to lead at the U.S. Senior Open

NEWPORT — The rest of the field at this 44th U.S. Senior Open might wind up needing some help.

Hiroyuki Fujita looks in control entering the final round at Newport Country Club. Saturday did nothing to dent his advantage or his confidence atop the leaderboard.

Fujita got up and down at the tough par-4 18th to finish a 3-under 67, expanding his edge by one shot. He sits at 14-under heading into Sunday, the only player in the field who avoided carding a bogey in this third round.

Fujita collected three birdies and 15 pars in what looked to be a stress-free stroll under the afternoon clouds. He’s missed just one fairway this week, and that came late in his opening round on Thursday. Fujita made early birdies at the par-5 first, par-4 sixth and par-4 ninth, the last coming on a curling putt from the right side of the elevated green.

“Incredible,” Barrington native Brett Quigley said after finishing with his own even-par 70. “I looked a couple of times — I just couldn’t believe he was shooting that low a score.

“That’s playing some really good golf.”

Steve Stricker and Richard Green added some late pressure with a combined five birdies in the last seven holes. Fujita’s four-shot lead at the turn was cut to two by the finish, with Stricker rolling in a long putt from the front of the green at the 17th to highlight a third straight 66. He’s at 12-under for the week and Green is one back at 11-under after a 69.

“The way (Fujita is) playing right now I’d have to go real low tomorrow,” said Bob Estes, who finished with a 4-under 66 and sits six shots back. “But Sunday is Sunday. Sometimes things are a little bit different on that final day.”

Estes rattled off four straight birdies to begin his round, including a precise 7-iron to the uphill par-3 fourth. His ball settled just above the hole on the left side, and Estes coaxed his putt home to cap a quick start. Estes played even-par golf from there and is alone in fifth place at 8-under.

“You’ve got to go out and hit shots,” Bristol native Billy Andrade said after a 1-over 71. “You’ve got to do it under pressure.”

There was a chance to make a move up the leaderboard, particularly on the more inland front nine. Justin Leonard racked up four birdies before the turn on his way to a second 3-under 67 of the week. Leonard is in a tie for 13th place at 4-under, and all but one of the four men alongside him also broke par on Saturday.

“Just drove the ball really well, which certainly helps in the wind,” Leonard said. “Then I hit a lot more greens. It was just more comfortable.”

Richard Bland is one shot ahead of Estes at 9-under and Paul Stankowski is one shot behind him at 7-under. Only 17 players remain within 10 shots of the lead, as Fujita continued to make quite an impression while playing here as a relative unknown. All of his 23 professional wins to date came in his native Japan, including last year’s Japan Senior Open Golf Championship.

“It’s pretty impressive what he’s doing,” Andrade said. “To back it up and back it up, that’s some good golf.”

Start times were pushed up to the morning, and threesomes played off both the first and 10th tees. Anticipated afternoon fog forced a change in the schedule after perfect summer golf weather the opening two days. A fresh ocean breeze and milky sunshine greeted the 71 players who survived Friday’s cut.

LIV Golf’s Lee Westwood is at U.S. Senior Open for over-50 tour debut

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Lee Westwood wants golf’s powers to stop fighting so players like him can get back on the course, where the fans want them.

The two-time Masters runner-up and former No. 1 golfer in the world is at the Newport Country Club this week for the U.S. Senior Open, making his over-50 tour debut a year late in part because of a PGA Tour ban on LIV Golf defectors.

The 51-year-old Westwood received an invite to the Senior Open, which is run by the USGA, as a recent Ryder Cup participant. Richard Bland has also earned an invitation for winning the Senior PGA Championship. The only other LIV golfer over 50 is Phil Mickelson.

“At the end of the day, we’re in the entertainment industry,” Westwood said on Tuesday after a practice round at the course on the mouth of the Narragansett Bay.

“No matter what the level of golf is, I think if the best players at every level don’t come together and play, there’s only one loser, and that’s the fans watching,” he said. “We need to somehow figure a way that we can get the best players playing against each other more often.”

Westwood ascended to the No. 1 ranking in 2010 after finishing in the top three in four of the previous five majors. That ended Tiger Woods’ record run of 281 weeks as the world’s top-ranked golfer; the Englishman held the No. 1 ranking for 22 weeks.

Although Westwood has never won a major, he has finished in the top five a dozen times.

Seems like the perfect candidate for a tour that was designed to give fans another chance to root on their favorites. But the PGA Tour’s policy is that LIV golfers have to wait one year from their last appearance on the Saudi-backed circuit to play in PGA Tour or PGA Tour Champions events.

In addition, the European tour has fined Westwood 850,000 British pounds – more than $1 million – a fine he repeated on Tuesday he has no intention of paying. “We’ll have to find a way around that,” he said.

“At any level, it’s disappointing they can’t resolve it,” Westwood said. “The Champions Tour for me is important because people have watched myself play and other guys out here play for the last 30, 40 years, and they build relationships with those players and they’ve seen us grow as players and people.

“Yes, people want to see the youngsters, the new guys on the block coming through and contending,” he said. “But they also want to see the guys they’ve made a bond with over the last 30, 40 years.”

Westwood is coming off a tie for third at last week’s LIV event outside of Nashville, Tennessee — his best result of the season. He said he didn’t feel like he needed a strong performance in Newport to make his larger point.

“Everybody that I talked to said it’s great to see myself and Richard playing here,” Westwood said, adding that he thought the victory by LIV’s Bryson DeChambeau in the U.S. Open was good for the sport.

“It’s basically getting all the best players together in one tournament to compete against each other, and that’s what you want at the highest level,” Westwood said. “You want all the best players there.”

One of five founding members of the USGA, the 7,024-yard, par-70 Newport Country Club was originally supposed to host the Senior Open in 2020 that was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been looking forward to this event now for quite a few years,” said Ernie Els, a four-time major champion who has five victories on the senior tour. “I was really looking forward to it in 2020, and I’m glad it’s come around now.”

Golfers out for practice rounds said the seaside course reminded them of a British links-style track — especially in the way the wind has such a big effect on how it plays. On Tuesday morning, the wind was blowing in their faces on the first tee; by the afternoon, it had swung around 180 degrees.

“We played with some big winds yesterday and some different winds today,” said Brett Quigley, a native Rhode Islander and sort of unofficial host of the tournament. “It’s going to play significantly different depending on the wind direction. That will be part of the great challenge.”

Brett Quigley and Billy Andrade come home to RI; will that help at the U.S. Senior Open?

open winds usa tours

NEWPORT — While players in this week’s U.S. Senior Open can go just about anywhere on the property, the third-floor locker room at Newport Country Club is reserved for a select few who have USGA titles to their name.

Brett Quigley, the winner of the 1987 U.S. Junior Amateur, is one of the select few who enjoys that privilege.

“It’s really cool to be up there in that little area,” Quigley said. “So yes, I would like to have another picture of the Senior Open trophy next to my name.”

Plenty of fans will traverse the property as they follow and cheer on their favorite players, but Quigley — and fellow Rhode Islander Billy Andrade — will have an entire state behind them as they try to make history.

“I’ll definitely feel that pressure of the hometown, but I also feel it’s a positive where I know there’s going to be a bunch of people pulling for me and pulling for Billy, and I love that,” Quigley said. “I love seeing everybody that I haven’t seen in a long time and feeling those good vibes and people cheering me on. It’s fantastic.”

While Quigley is one of the hometown guys, this week’s tournament doesn’t provide the home-course advantage you might think.

Growing up in Barrington, Quigley nurtured his game at Rhode Island Country Club where father Paul, an RIGA Hall of Famer, was a member. Before uncle Dana was “The Ironman” of the PGA Senior Tour, he was the head pro at Crestwood Country Club and Brett Quigley was there helping out in the shop, pulling carts and picking the range.

Plus, Rhode Island.

“You grow up in Rhode Island and if you drove 15 minutes, that’s a long drive,” Quigley said. “I grew up in Barrington and I wouldn’t go to Providence because that’s too far to go.”

Things have changed.

More: Here are 5 of the best public golf courses in Rhode Island

Over the last three decades, Quigley has played more than a few casual rounds at Newport Country Club. When the USGA announced Newport would host the U.S. Senior Open in 2024 after having it taken away by COVID, those casual rounds turned a little more businesslike as he started mentally preparing for the tournament.

“I’ve gotten to play probably three rounds a summer here getting ready for this tournament the last couple of years,” Quigley said. “I’ve been trying to do my homework in those rounds.

“I love playing here. It’s a great walk, it’s a fun walk and it’s a great vibe.”

Quigley’s hope is the vibes get real high as the week goes on.

Wind will be the story of the week. If the wind doesn’t blow, the course can be picked apart. Since windless days in Newport happen as often as smooth beach traffic, it’s going to be the biggest challenge the players face all week. It’s going to be different every single day and, as Quigley noted, wildly different depending on what time someone is on the course.

“We played today, it was the north wind — I think — which is a different wind than typical here,” Quigley said. “A lot of the members we’ve spoken to said right at noon it changes to a south wind almost every day.

“We were on the seventh green and we played seven into the wind and it was about 11:50. We get to the eighth tee and the wind completely changed and comes out of the south.

“It’s going to play significantly different depending on the wind direction and that will be a part of the challenge.”

This spring’s rain provided enough saturation that Newport’s fairways and rough are more green than they usually are this time of year. There are still more than a few spots that are firmed up and crispy, which will force players to change how they attack.

“When you see it in the summertime from now on, it’s going to be brown and you know the ball is going to be bouncing,” Quigley said. “It’s a little more, not luck, but it’s a little more bouncing and just playing golf instead of more target golf.”

Quigley is excited for the challenge.

Last year, Quigley closed the major season with a bang. He tied for fourth at the U.S. Senior Open and backed it up with a ninth-place tie at the Senior Players Championship. While he hasn’t started the major season off great this year — finishing tied at 57th at The Tradition and missing the cut at the Senior PGA Championship — he likes where his game is at.

Newport Country Club might not technically be the home of Brett Quigley, but Rhode Island is and it should give him the push he needs as he tries to get the biggest win of his professional playing career.

“It’s a home week,” Quigley said. “And it’s still my home.”

Hiroyuki Fujita pads lead at U.S. Senior Open as Steve Stricker lurks in familiar second place

Daily Wrap Up

Change Text Size

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The wind at Newport Country Club hasn’t been able to slow down Hiroyuki Fujita in the U.S. Senior Open Championship.

Maybe the rain will stop him.

The Japan Golf Tour veteran shot a 3-under 67 on Saturday to improve to 14-under in pursuit of a wire-to-wire win and his first victory on American soil. He’ll have to withstand thunderstorms in the forecast for the final round as well as a charge from 2019 champion Steve Stricker, who made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to shoot his third-straight 66 and cut a four-stroke deficit in half.

“The conditions are supposed to be pretty bad, from what I hear, tomorrow,” Fujita said. “I don’t have a lot of distance on my club, so I’m definitely going to be in some tough spots. I’m just going to focus on the fact that I’m playing on the last day in the last group and focus on the fact that I’m lucky to be here.”

Richard Green shot 69 to sit at 11-under, with Richard Bland (69) at 9-under and Bob Estes (66) at 8-under.

Players teed off early and in threesomes from both nines on Saturday in an attempt to finish before the fog rolled in on the 7,024-yard, par-70 course on the mouth of Narragansett Bay. Tee times have been moved up again for the final round on Sunday, with rain and lightning forecast for the afternoon.

“This place is meant to be kind of firm and fast and kind of linksy in feel. If it stayed this way, a little breezy, and firmed up a little bit, it would be a really tough test tomorrow,” 2021 winner Jim Furyk said.

“If it rains quite a bit, I think you’ll see some guys who are able to score, where it’s easier to keep it on the fairway, easier to get the balls on the greens, and maybe a little less difficult,” he said. “If it’s wet, if it rains, someone will go out there and fire it.”

Fujita, who had never broken 70 on the 50-and-over tour, did it for the third day in a row while posting the only bogey-free round on Saturday. He has just one bogey in the first 54 holes and has missed just one fairway in the tournament.

“He didn’t really miss a shot all the way around," said Stricker, who was the tournament’s runner-up in each of the last two years. “He's very consistent. We’re going to have to go out and have a good round to try to catch him. It looks like he’s in control of what’s going on with his game and emotion.”

Fujita had three birdies on the front on Saturday to open a big lead at 14-under before making nine straight pars on the back nine.

“He just didn’t make any mistakes,” Green said. “If he plays like that tomorrow, it’s going to take a good round from the guys coming from behind to catch him. You never know in the pressure of a U.S. Open at the end of the week what might happen. But I’ll just play my game and see where it ends up.”

Stricker fell four strokes back with a bogey on the par-3 13th but then got the stroke back on No. 16. He drained a 40-foot putt on the 17th right before Fujita missed his birdie putt from about 12 feet.

Stricker, who was second by two strokes to Padraig Harrington in 2022 and one shot behind Bernhard Langer last year, has posted a 33 on all six nine-hole sides of the tournament.

“You’ve got Greenie, obviously, who’s playing great at the minute," Bland said. "Steve Stricker’s been there, done it. I don’t know too much about the guy that’s in front, but he’s pretty much had the lead all week.”

At This Week's U.S. Senior Open, the Wildcard Will Be the Weather in Newport

Brian giuffra | jun 24, 2024.

Newport Country Club hosts the 2024 U.S. Senior Open.

NEWPORT, R.I. – As a continuous stiff wind blew in off the Long Island Sound and across Newport Country Club, grins gleamed across the faces of several United States Golf Association staff members scattered around the practice green.

“If we get this kind of wind for the tournament,” one of them said, “it would be perfect.”

The wind was blowing between 15 and 18 mph that sundrenched May afternoon and everyone’s hoping for similar weather when the U.S. Senior Open gets under way at Newport CC this Thursday.

A dry, windy forecast will showcase the best of Newport, challenging Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Steve Stricker and other top senior players in a similar manner to how Pinehurst challenged Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

“Everything is in hands of mother nature now,” USGA senior director of championships Ben Kimball told Sports Illustrated . “The golf course is exactly where we want it to be. It’s happy, it’s healthy and it knows it’s gotta run a race.”

Who wins that race will be determined heavily by the weather.

Like Pinehurst, where the 2024 U.S. Open was held two weeks ago, Newport CC is a natural course, with varying lengths of rough and fescue lining the fairways. You could get a good break or a bad break if you hit into the thick stuff.

Unlike Pinehurst, Newport only has irrigation systems on its greens and tee boxes, making rain the only source of water for the fairways and rough. Thankfully this year’s spring was wet in Newport, providing enough rain for the native vegetation to grow as intended.

“It’s golf in its purest form,” Kimball said. “Nothing is perfect. The rough is inconsistent, which makes it more exciting. It creates all sorts of unusually situations and lies and shots.”

When Tiger Woods won the U.S. Amateur at Newport in 1995, there was a severe drought that made the course play fast and firm. When Annika Sorenstam won the U.S. Women’s Open here in 2006, the first round was cancelled because of rain and players finished the tournament with 36 holes on Sunday.

The extended forecast appears ideal for the U.S. Senior Open, with mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-70s, and a steady 10–13 mph wind predicted in Newport. That would provide Kimball with the flexibility to set the course up in a way that tests the players and showcases Newport’s best qualities.

“It [weather] is the most important factor in what we do to set up the golf course,” Kimball said. “It drives every decision I make.”

Newport CC is one of the five founding member clubs of the USGA and hosted the first U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open Championship in 1895. This will be the 1,001st championship event hosted by the USGA and it's fitting to be conducted on such hallowed grounds.

“Everything is setting up for another historic event,” Kimball said. “This is where major championship golf started in this country and when you visit here, it’s kind of like stepping back in time. We owe it to the world's best senior golfers who are coming here to try and win their national championship at a venue that's so special to us to showcase this course at it’s best.”

Now we’ll see if Mother Nature plays along.

Caribbean braces for Hurricane Beryl as Category 3 storm approaches

Beryl is expected to slam the Lesser Antilles with potential “life-threatening” impact, but residents and tourists were cautiously optimistic Sunday.

Hurricane Beryl was approaching the Caribbean with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph early Monday — leading islanders to prepare for the violent Category 3 storm to strike later in the morning.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Beryl from a Category 4 in its 2 a.m. Monday update .

Beryl was expected to move across the Windward Islands on Monday morning and through the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday, the Hurricane Center said. “Life-threatening” winds and storm surge were also expected early Monday.

Hurricane warnings have been issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadine Islands, Grenada and Tobago, while tropical storm advisories stretched as far north as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Hurricane Center is expecting a storm surge of 6 to 9 feet, as well as 3 to 6 inches of rain.

By late Sunday, much of the region had shut down public life, closing storefronts and requiring residents and tourists to take shelter indoors.

Researchers have been warning for months that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could be one for the record books, and now it is: There is no precedent for a storm to intensify this quickly, nor reach this strength, in this part of the ocean in June. Records date from 1851.

Grenada entered a state of emergency Sunday evening as a precaution for the storm charging its way, and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell urged the island’s 125,000 residents to stay home. St. Lucian Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said a national shutdown in the country of about 170,000 would begin at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Service issued a flash-flood warning to its 100,000 residents.

In Bridgetown, the Barbadian capital, Doriel Gill-Skinner spent Sunday telling others about a neighborhood shelter that’s available for those that need it, she told The Washington Post. The storm wasn’t expected to hit the island for several hours, but by early afternoon she had prepared her grab-and-go bag of nonperishable food items, water and a change of clothes, and busied herself by readying her neighbors.

“The mood in the community is calm and confident,” she said. “We are taking the storm seriously and are prepared for it.”

At midday Sunday, Michael Tiller was looking at blue skies and calm, clear water from the patio of a rented vacation home in Barbados. “You can’t really tell there’s a hurricane coming,” the Michigan resident said. “It’s a really beautiful day out here.”

Tiller plans to hunker down as soon as the winds pick up. The property managers of the home he is sharing with his family for the week boarded up the windows and glass doors earlier Sunday. The family is bracing for strong winds and power outages, but Tiller said he isn’t too concerned. The family is planning to return to the United States on Wednesday.

Nauman Khan, visiting from Toronto, spent most of Sunday exploring Barbados with his wife and two children. Like Tiller, Khan said there was little to suggest that a major storm was on its way.

“It’s been mostly sunny the whole day, with a slight breeze — a quintessentially Barbadian day,” Khan said.

But the winds began picking up in the late afternoon, and his resort on the southern end of the island told guests that the on-site restaurant would stop dine-in services. Customers were asked to spend the remainder of the evening in their rooms.

“I haven’t seen any panic,” Khan said. “The DJ is still playing. The bar is still open.”

Over the weekend, Beryl strengthened quickly. It went from a tropical storm to a Category 3 hurricane in 36 hours and intensified by 75 mph during that time. According to Sam Lillo, a researcher at DTN Weather, that level of rapid intensification has never happened in June and has happened only twice in July.

There is a firm link between rapid intensification — the strengthening of hurricanes — and human-induced climate change. Ocean waters are running 3 or 4 degrees above average, reminiscent of August rather than June.

Before now, the Atlantic had only seen two major hurricanes, rated Category 3 or higher, in June — Audrey in 1957 and Alma in 1966. The Atlantic’s Main Development Region, between northern South America and Africa, was believed to be inhospitable to major hurricanes during June — until now.

In the center of that path, Grenadians were preparing for the worst and hoping to avoid a repeat of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan, which killed at least 37 people and damaged 90 percent of homes on the island.

Kitaka Chakumba Mawuto recalled that during that storm, he and his family watched the roof fly off their home before they rushed to a neighbor’s house.

“It was traumatizing, but it brought us together,” said Mawuto, 30. His family had no idea what they were in for during Ivan, but he is better prepared now. He hopes authorities are, too, he said.

Several islands north, in St. Lucia, Rhyesa Joseph said Sunday that she has prepared as much as she can, ensuring all her electronics are charged and setting aside essentials. She’s more worried about the safety of others on the 28-mile-long island and what the storm will leave behind, she said.

“I am very concerned about the economic implications of the hurricane, the damage to infrastructure, the food insecurity it may cause,” Joseph said. “We know what has happened to our neighbors because of hurricanes, and we ourselves have experienced Hurricane Tomas and other storms.” Hurricane Tomas killed at least eight people in the Windward Islands before killing 35 more in Haiti over about a week in 2010. It caused about $336 million of damage in St. Lucia.

Still, on Sunday afternoon, Joseph said it was “a quintessentially beautiful day,” and the weather was sunny and hot.

“Literally the calm before the storm,” she said.

Best time to visit united states.

Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south.

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the  Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold and snowy in the northern states, and many people head south in search of warmer temps.

Culture and customs

With immigration playing a major part in the development of America, today the country is made up of many different cultures. It’s no wonder modern America is rich with a variety of cultural traditions, cuisines, religions and festivals. Because of this, a large diversity of holidays are celebrated in America. Annual holidays like Independence Day and Thanksgiving are usually celebrated by all regardless of religion or political persuasion, and give people a chance to reconnect with family and friends around the dinner table or grill.  From sports to soul music, popular culture to philosophy, and fine art to folk art, the tastes and desires of Americans vary around the country. A love of sport unifies the nation - it doesn’t matter if you live in a city loft or out in the country, sports like ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football all attract a strong following. Many Native Americans live on reservations and fight to retain their traditions and preserve their heritage, although when visiting reservations don’t be surprised to see Native Americans wearing modern clothing. With much of the language and many of the customs lost over the years, Native Americans strive to live a life of deep spirituality and in connection with the earth, as their ancestors did for centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring cheap eats or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With a variety of international influences, try Creole cuisine in New Orleans, traditional Jewish fare like bagels and pastrami sandwiches in New York, and barbecue in Texas. America’s got everything, from burger joints to taco shacks, organic cafes to refined Michelin-starred restaurants.

Geography and environment

From the lush everglades of Florida, through the red-hot deserts of Nevada to the urban jungles of New York and Philadelphia, the United States has many different environments and ecosystems within its boundaries. Sharing borders with Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, the United States has deserts, glaciers, freshwater lakes, rapid-filled rivers, mountain ranges, sprawling plains, forested national parks , beaches and bays.

The major national parks of America – Yellowstone, Zion, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Denali and Joshua Tree offer a glimpse into what much of America looked like before development. Lush vegetation, majestic mountains and sparkling lakes give deer, moose, bears, bison and many other species of wildlife a fertile home to live in.

When travelling, you’re likely to see modern cities filled with traffic, skyscrapers and high-density housing, as well as sleepy towns, and Native American reservations. A complex network of highways connect the major cities, making overland travel a popular choice with visitors and locals alike. The great American road trip is still alive and well.

History and government

As one of the world’s most influential nations, major moments and events in American history ripple throughout the rest of the world. The American people are known for their resilience and irrepressible nature, and it is this spirit that allows them to continue to contribute to the world economically, scientifically and creatively.

In recent history, America has enjoyed the historic highs of the moon landings and the devastating lows of Hurricane Katrina. The world has seen American companies like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Starbucks change the face of the world. And people like Steven Spielberg, Lance Armstrong, Maya Angelou and Sidney Poitier create masterpieces, break records and win countless awards.

You can be anyone you want to be in NYC. Indulge your artistic side at MoMA, mingle with the Gordon Geckos on Wall Street, cheer like a pro at a Yankees game or kick back at a bar with a Manhattan and a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

2. San Francisco

San Francisco is made of sunshine, seafood and a whole lot of hills. This is the place to embrace your inner (or outer) bohemian. But it's not all 'flowers in your hair' and free thinking, be sure to take a ferry to Alcatraz and scoff down a clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf.

3. New Orleans

The Caribbean meets France and Africa in New Orleans. Music is everywhere, and so are the friendly faces. The city comes to life after dark so have an afternoon nap, get some comfortable shoes on and get ready to bar hop the night away.

4. Las Vegas

Hello Lady Luck! Days somehow disappear in the hedonistic blitz of colour, light, showgirls, casinos and offers too good to refuse. Try to escape the endless buffets to catch a real Las Vegas show; there's everything from death-defying acrobats to Elvis on offer.

The financial and political powerhouse of Chicago has been the home of two of the most influential people in the world - President Obama and Oprah. Famed for its distinctive architecture, booming performing arts scene and sports-mad locals, the 'Windy City' shouldn't be missed.

The air is warmer, the clothes smaller and the colours are somehow brighter in Miami. Jewish, Latin and Caribbean cultures blend to make a heady mix of great food, even better music and a nightlife filled with the spirit of fiesta. Hang out on perfect beaches, spot classic cars and gaze at the beautiful people as they strut their stuff.

7. Los Angeles

Search beyond the stardust of Hollywood and the excessive price tags of Rodeo Drive, to find the true essence of Los Angeles. Home to a melting pot of cultures, uber-cool restaurants, a hip art scene and the eclectic vibe of Venice Beach, LA is so hot right now!

The birthplace of grunge music and iconic super-companies like Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks, Seattle offers so much more than great coffee. Markets packed with fresh produce, a harbour perfect for boating, vibrant public art and a thriving live music scene combine to make Seattle a must-see city.

History comes alive in the heritage-filled streets of Memphis. Whether it's at Elvis Presley's Graceland, the lively blues clubs and restaurants of Beale Street or the moving Civil Rights Movement Museum, it could be said that the soul of America lives in Memphis.

One of America's oldest cities, Boston is evolving. Working class neighbourhoods are being gentrified, the industry is giving way to tech start-ups and modern architectural treasures sit alongside brown-stone buildings. Despite the change, get chatting to locals about the Red Sox and you'll soon find you're definitely in Boston.

It’s no wonder many people choose to do their clothes shopping in the United States. With iconic department stores offering a wide range of labels, and vintage/charity stores stocking American fashion classics like distressed denim jeans and leather cowboy boots, shopping in America is fun. Known for having great sales and even better customer service, it’s well worth leaving room in your backpack for a few extras. Please note that unlike in many other countries, tax isn’t included in the ticketed price. It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season in New Orleans. Witness a chaotic collision of lively music, colourful costumes, masquerade masks, soul food and joyful 'krewes' at the parades, parties and masquerade balls in late February every year.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday

Presidents' Day

Memorial Day

Independence Day

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile phone while in the US?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What kind of transport will I use in the United States?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Be amazed by enormous glaciers and stunning, icy landscapes while travelling on a ferry in Alaska.

Use pedal power to see the best of Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Cycling is a great way to see the sights and be active at the same time.

Take in the sights while enjoying a ride on one of San Francisco’s icons – the streetcar .

What sort of accommodation will I stay in while travelling in the United States?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in the US you may find yourself staying in a:

Spend a night sleeping in a hogan – a traditional Navajo structure made of logs, mud and stone and built with an open roof to view the sparkling night sky.

Reconnect with nature and enjoy staying in quaint log cabins throughout the country's beautiful national parks. Fall asleep to the rustling of trees and wake up to the sounds of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance
