Best time to visit united states.

Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south.

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the  Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold and snowy in the northern states, and many people head south in search of warmer temps.

Culture and customs

With immigration playing a major part in the development of America, today the country is made up of many different cultures. It’s no wonder modern America is rich with a variety of cultural traditions, cuisines, religions and festivals. Because of this, a large diversity of holidays are celebrated in America. Annual holidays like Independence Day and Thanksgiving are usually celebrated by all regardless of religion or political persuasion, and give people a chance to reconnect with family and friends around the dinner table or grill.  From sports to soul music, popular culture to philosophy, and fine art to folk art, the tastes and desires of Americans vary around the country. A love of sport unifies the nation - it doesn’t matter if you live in a city loft or out in the country, sports like ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football all attract a strong following. Many Native Americans live on reservations and fight to retain their traditions and preserve their heritage, although when visiting reservations don’t be surprised to see Native Americans wearing modern clothing. With much of the language and many of the customs lost over the years, Native Americans strive to live a life of deep spirituality and in connection with the earth, as their ancestors did for centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring cheap eats or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With a variety of international influences, try Creole cuisine in New Orleans, traditional Jewish fare like bagels and pastrami sandwiches in New York, and barbecue in Texas. America’s got everything, from burger joints to taco shacks, organic cafes to refined Michelin-starred restaurants.

Geography and environment

From the lush everglades of Florida, through the red-hot deserts of Nevada to the urban jungles of New York and Philadelphia, the United States has many different environments and ecosystems within its boundaries. Sharing borders with Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, the United States has deserts, glaciers, freshwater lakes, rapid-filled rivers, mountain ranges, sprawling plains, forested national parks , beaches and bays.

The major national parks of America – Yellowstone, Zion, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Denali and Joshua Tree offer a glimpse into what much of America looked like before development. Lush vegetation, majestic mountains and sparkling lakes give deer, moose, bears, bison and many other species of wildlife a fertile home to live in.

When travelling, you’re likely to see modern cities filled with traffic, skyscrapers and high-density housing, as well as sleepy towns, and Native American reservations. A complex network of highways connect the major cities, making overland travel a popular choice with visitors and locals alike. The great American road trip is still alive and well.

History and government

As one of the world’s most influential nations, major moments and events in American history ripple throughout the rest of the world. The American people are known for their resilience and irrepressible nature, and it is this spirit that allows them to continue to contribute to the world economically, scientifically and creatively.

In recent history, America has enjoyed the historic highs of the moon landings and the devastating lows of Hurricane Katrina. The world has seen American companies like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Starbucks change the face of the world. And people like Steven Spielberg, Lance Armstrong, Maya Angelou and Sidney Poitier create masterpieces, break records and win countless awards.

Top 10 must-see cities in the US

1. new york.

You can be anyone you want to be in NYC. Indulge your artistic side at MoMA, mingle with the Gordon Geckos on Wall Street, cheer like a pro at a Yankees game or kick back at a bar with a Manhattan and a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

2. San Francisco

San Francisco is made of sunshine, seafood and a whole lot of hills. This is the place to embrace your inner (or outer) bohemian. But it's not all 'flowers in your hair' and free thinking, be sure to take a ferry to Alcatraz and scoff down a clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf.

3. New Orleans

The Caribbean meets France and Africa in New Orleans. Music is everywhere, and so are the friendly faces. The city comes to life after dark so have an afternoon nap, get some comfortable shoes on and get ready to bar hop the night away.

4. Las Vegas

Hello Lady Luck! Days somehow disappear in the hedonistic blitz of colour, light, showgirls, casinos and offers too good to refuse. Try to escape the endless buffets to catch a real Las Vegas show; there's everything from death-defying acrobats to Elvis on offer.

The financial and political powerhouse of Chicago has been the home of two of the most influential people in the world - President Obama and Oprah. Famed for its distinctive architecture, booming performing arts scene and sports-mad locals, the 'Windy City' shouldn't be missed.

The air is warmer, the clothes smaller and the colours are somehow brighter in Miami. Jewish, Latin and Caribbean cultures blend to make a heady mix of great food, even better music and a nightlife filled with the spirit of fiesta. Hang out on perfect beaches, spot classic cars and gaze at the beautiful people as they strut their stuff.

7. Los Angeles

Search beyond the stardust of Hollywood and the excessive price tags of Rodeo Drive, to find the true essence of Los Angeles. Home to a melting pot of cultures, uber-cool restaurants, a hip art scene and the eclectic vibe of Venice Beach, LA is so hot right now!

The birthplace of grunge music and iconic super-companies like Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks, Seattle offers so much more than great coffee. Markets packed with fresh produce, a harbour perfect for boating, vibrant public art and a thriving live music scene combine to make Seattle a must-see city.

History comes alive in the heritage-filled streets of Memphis. Whether it's at Elvis Presley's Graceland, the lively blues clubs and restaurants of Beale Street or the moving Civil Rights Movement Museum, it could be said that the soul of America lives in Memphis.

One of America's oldest cities, Boston is evolving. Working class neighbourhoods are being gentrified, the industry is giving way to tech start-ups and modern architectural treasures sit alongside brown-stone buildings. Despite the change, get chatting to locals about the Red Sox and you'll soon find you're definitely in Boston.

It’s no wonder many people choose to do their clothes shopping in the United States. With iconic department stores offering a wide range of labels, and vintage/charity stores stocking American fashion classics like distressed denim jeans and leather cowboy boots, shopping in America is fun. Known for having great sales and even better customer service, it’s well worth leaving room in your backpack for a few extras. Please note that unlike in many other countries, tax isn’t included in the ticketed price. It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season in New Orleans. Witness a chaotic collision of lively music, colourful costumes, masquerade masks, soul food and joyful 'krewes' at the parades, parties and masquerade balls in late February every year.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday

Presidents' Day

Memorial Day

Independence Day

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Veterans' Day

Thanksgiving Day

Please note dates of  United States public holidays  may vary.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile phone while in the US?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What kind of transport will I use in the United States?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Be amazed by enormous glaciers and stunning, icy landscapes while travelling on a ferry in Alaska.

Use pedal power to see the best of Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Cycling is a great way to see the sights and be active at the same time.

Take in the sights while enjoying a ride on one of San Francisco’s icons – the streetcar .

What sort of accommodation will I stay in while travelling in the United States?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in the US you may find yourself staying in a:

Spend a night sleeping in a hogan – a traditional Navajo structure made of logs, mud and stone and built with an open roof to view the sparkling night sky.

Reconnect with nature and enjoy staying in quaint log cabins throughout the country's beautiful national parks. Fall asleep to the rustling of trees and wake up to the sounds of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Does my trip to the United States support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to the United States directly support our foundation partners, C ultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA) and t he Grand Canyon Conservancy .

Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance (CHEA)

Donations help CHEA provide access to industry-specific technical assistance, capacity building, and industry networks for small BIPOC travel and tourism businesses through their Diversity Tourism Academy (DTA). Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Find out more or make a donation

The Grand Canyon Conservancy

The Grand Canyon Conservancy is on a mission to protect the Grand Canyon National Park for future generations. With almost 6 million visitors to the park annually, the Grand Canyon Conservancy runs educational programs and immersive experiences that teach people about the park's cultural and environmental significance. Donations support trail restoration and maintenance, conservation and preservation of native vegetation and wildlife, and educational programs. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

open winds usa tours

I am planning to book a tour with openwinds.com for their East Coast tour package. I would appreciate if someone could share their personal experience here? I don't see many reviews online.

' class=

Seeing very few reviews online is probably all you need to know.

And do you really need a tour, which typically is long days sitting on a bus versus actual sightseeing, versus just picking what YOU want to see most and doing and doing it?

Sorry I can't even find a web site for this company - other than one which specializes in tours for visitors from India.

Hello, has anyone taken openwinds tour and if there is any feedback? planning to book one for parents in August

I actually booked the East Coast tour for my parents in May 2018, and they had a really good experience. My parents really liked the tour and enjoyed a lot.

Hi, I am looking to book via Openwinds for US east coast trip. They are bit expensive ( almost triple to what taketour costs - however taketour has some horrible reviews ). If you wont mind, can you mention rates you paid and was it worth for the money ?

open winds usa tours

I had really enjoyed my tour with OpenWinds on 16/08/18 to 28/08/18 east coast and west cost .

They have fulfilled all their commitments.

It was really wonderful trip by well organised and good tour manager with very reasonable price.

I took tour via openwind from Sept7-Sept12, 2018 for US East coast, open wind is travel agent, tourslimited is actual travel company. Tour was very well arranged, and we had great experience with fellow indians. Tour guide, breakfast, snacks, indian dinners, hotels were really good quality and we never felt hectic any time in the tour.

' class=

We did the east coast trip last year. Very well arranged trip, and tour guide Alpana was awesome! We packed in a lot in the 7day itinerary. the hotels selection was spot on and the food was good. Such trips do tend to rush you a bit, but it is all manageable, especially if your tour guide is good. Highly recommended.

Has anyone booked a tour with them, and how was the experience?

Do a search for them here and look at the responses. I have no personal experience but a lot of people seem unhappy with them. (I can;t find a web site for them and the google listings are for tours for people from India.)

Where Winds Meet, a Beautiful New Open World RPG, Is Coming to PS5 - State of Play 2024

G orgeous open-world RPG Where Winds Meet has reemerged at Sony's State of Play today, and is no longer a PC exclusive. Alongside a new trailer, we learned that Where Winds Meet will also be headed to PS5, though we're still not sure exactly when.

In a PlayStation Blog post, we learned a little more about Where Winds Meet, specifically its take on showcasing Chinese martial arts. From the blog:

Your character might use the mystical power of Qinggong to run up sheer cliffs or across the shimmering surface of water at high speed or use the power of Chi to stun enemies from a distance, or grasp objectives from far out of reach. Martial arts skills can also be acquired from observing and mimicking the behavior of animals. Breath fire like a dragon, leap like a giant toad or roar like a lion – all skills that can prove incredible useful when faced with an array of foes, whether human or maybe with that giant bear you accidentally provoked!

Where Winds Meet is set in the Ten Kingdoms Era during a battle between rival dynasties, where the player takes the role of a swordsman who will influence the conflict in different ways depending on their choices. It's influenced heavily by Wuxia, a Chinese fiction genre where ancient Chinese fighters are depicted with superhuman abilities. This influence, according to the blog, will become evidence both in the protagonist's abilities and choice, as well as in the behavior and styles of certain NPCs.

Where Winds Meet was first revealed back at Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022 from Chinese developer Everstone Studios. In a preview last August , we went hands-on, getting a taste of Where Winds Meet's mix of Zelda and The Witcher gameplay and the seemingly massive amount of systems, choices, and possibilities at play.

2024 U.S. Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions from top golf model that nailed 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the u.s. open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

usatsi-23324249-bryson-dechambeau-2024-pga-r4-6th-green-1400.jpg

Ludvig Aberg gets another shot at winning his first major when the 2024 U.S. Open tees off at Pinehurst #2 on Thursday, June 13. The 24-year-old Swede came close to victory at the Masters, but had to settle for second behind world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He has four top-10 finishes this season and only missed one cut, so he should be in top form in North Carolina for the U.S. Open 2024. The competition is fierce, however, and Aberg is listed at 14-1 in the latest 2024 U.S. Open odds. Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite on the PGA odds board, while Rory McIlroy and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele are 10-1 in the 2024 U.S. Open field.

Defending U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark is a 22-1 longshot. Before locking in any 2024 U.S. Open picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing U.S. Open props and U.S. Open Pick 6 or PrizePicks entries, be sure to see the 2024 U.S. Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now with the U.S. Open 2024 approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 U.S. Open: Brooks Koepka (12-1), a two-time U.S. Open champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Koepka has five major championships overall but he hasn't been much of a factor in major tournaments since that last victory at the 2023 PGA Championship. In his four majors since then, his best finish is tying for 17th at last year's U.S. Open. Koepka has finished outside the top 25 in each of his last three major starts, which is one shy of tying a career-long drought.

He's finished outside the top 15 in four straight appearances at majors and has struggled overall this season. Over his last eight tournament starts, he has twice as many finishes outside the top 25 (four) as he has inside the top 10 (two). Add in that he shot over par in his lone previous start at Pinehurst No. 2, and there are much better values to utilize U.S. Open 2024 bets on.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his long odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The two-time major winner should be able to navigate the difficult terrain at Pinehurst since he ranks 14th in the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (0.952) and seventh in strokes gained: approach to green (0.697). He also ranks 12th in birdie average (4.43).

Thomas has two top-10 finishes in his last three starts, including a T5 at the RBC Heritage. He finished T8 at the PGA Championship, shooting a 67 in the second and third rounds at Valhalla. His current form and experience in major events make Thomas an intriguing pick to climb the leaderboard at the 2024 U.S. Open.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the U.S. Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected U.S. Open leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship .

Challenging Morning Conditions Confound Field in First Round of U.S. Women’s Open

Nelly Korda

LANCASTER, Pa. — The first-round conditions were challenging for the early wave at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally, and while there were a few under-par scores, many walked off their final hole at Lancaster Country Club wondering just what had happened on Thursday in Pennsylvania.

One of those players was Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda, who had a difficult start to her bid for a seventh 2024 LPGA Tour victory. She bogeyed her first hole of the day and then recorded a 10 on the par-3 12th, hitting three shots into the water on the 161-yard hole.

She closed out her back nine with bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes to turn in 45 but ultimately righted the ship on her closing nine, the front nine at Lancaster Country Club. Korda birdied the par-4 3rd, par-5 7th and par-3 8th holes, making bogeys on Nos. 5, 6 and 9 to shoot even-par and post a 10-over 80, her highest score on the LPGA Tour since the final round of the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach, where she also recorded an 80.

It was a disappointing round for the 25-year-old, but Korda was trying to give herself some grace on Thursday afternoon in one of the tougher moments she’s had on the golf course in quite some time.

“I didn't really want to shoot 80, and I just kept making bogeys,” said Korda. “My last two rounds in the U.S. Women's Open have not been good. I ended Sunday at Pebble shooting (80), and then today I shot 80. I'm human. I'm going to have bad days. I played some really solid golf up to this point. Today was just a bad day. That's all I can say.”

Korda was not alone in her struggles in the first round as the scoring average for the morning draw was 74.58, nearly five shots over par. Pretty much every member of the 156-player field knew Lancaster Country Club was going to present one of the toughest tests of the season, with many referring to the venue as a “beast,” but a select few figured out how to tame the dragon on day one.

LPGA Tour members Andrea Lee and Wichanee Meechai along with French amateur Adela Cernousek were the only three players to record under-par scores in the morning draw on Thursday. Lee went out in 34 on her opening nine, making a bogey on the par-4 5th hole and then erasing her mistake with a birdie on the par-5 7th hole, ultimately grabbing one more birdie on the ninth to turn in 1-under.

The LPGA Tour winner gave that shot back with a bogey on 10, and Lee then had the highlight of her round on the 12th hole, making a nearly 30-foot birdie putt on the challenging par 3. She then bogeyed the 15th and rolled in an 11-footer for birdie on 18 to post a 69, an effort Lee was pleased with considering how difficult the course played in the first round.

“It was definitely tough out there today. I knew it as soon as I walked out of the hotel,” said Lee. “I knew it was going to be a grind out there. This golf course is such a test. It's a beast of a golf course, and par is a really good score out here. I tried to plot my way around the golf course as best I could and hit as many fairways and greens as possible. Managed to get a few putts to drop today so that was nice.”

Only four players remained at even par after the conclusion of the early rounds at Lancaster Country Club, the most notable of which are major winner Sei Young Kim and 2024 LPGA Tour rookie Alexandra Forsterling. The highlight of the morning was an ace from 2020 AIG Women's Open champion Sophia Popov, who made her hole-in-one on the par-3 8th hole at Lancaster Country Club. Popov finished with a 2-over 72 in her opening round.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

Businesses increasingly have chosen to stay open on the holiday, leading to what is now one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year.

Here’s what is open and closed this year on Memorial Day:

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

Government offices, post offices, courts and schools are closed.

Memorial Day Weekend

  • The history: 5 things to know about the holiday , including its evolution and controversies
  • Travel: Crowds and high prices met travelers on the busiest day of the holiday weekend
  • On the menu: Try this recipe for smoky chicken wings or for something lighter, update these classic side dishes
  • What’s open? Check this list of stores and more before you head out
  • Now playing: Here are the movies coming to the box office this weekend and beyond

BANKS AND STOCK MARKET

U.S. stock markets and banks are closed Monday.

Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Memorial Day.

Warehouse membership club Costco said it would close on Memorial Day , but the vast majority of retailers will be open, with many trying to lure customers with big promotional sales. Hours may vary by location.

Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial opening of the summer travel season. Auto club AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday travel period, an increase of 4% from last year. If those projections are accurate, that would come close to 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day weekend travelers.

AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over the weekend — the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking it in 2000 — and that another 3.5 million people will travel by air.

Canadian Open 2024: How to Watch and Stream All the PGA Tour Golf From Anywhere

Nick Taylor looks to defend his crown as the Tour heads to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

open winds usa tours

Nick Taylor will try to make history once more as he looks to defend his title at the Canadian Open this weekend.

An epic 72-foot playoff putt saw Taylor clinch last year's title ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, a shot that saw him become the first Canadian to win this tournament since Pat Fletcher back in 1954.

Taylor's win last year ended a run of two wins in a row for Rory McIlroy, and the Irish star is being widely backed by the bookies to return to winning ways in this tournament alongside last year's runner-up, Fleetwood.

Keep reading to find out the best live TV streaming services to use to watch each day of the tournament live wherever you are in the world.

How to watch the the Canadian Open 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great VPN deals taking place right now.

Quick tips for streaming the Canadian Open 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

The PGA Tour is north of the border for its annual Canadian visit.

The 2024 RBC Canadian Open is being contested this week at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario.

Two-time winner and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy — who admitted he was “groggy” after his first round — is joined in the field by defending champion and countryman Nick Taylor.

Fellow Canadian Adam Hadwin is there as well. A year ago, he was tackled by a security guard known only as Mr. X, who finally broke silence about the 18th hole takedown but did so without identifying himself.

Among the others in the field: Tommy Fleetwood, Sahith Theegala, Cameron Young, Sam Burns, Shane Lowry and Sean O’Hair, who was the last man to get into the field who had to drive five hours to catch a flight.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Golf is all Lexi Thompson has ever known, and one of the more popular players on the LPGA Tour decided Tuesday this will be her last year playing a full schedule.

Thompson chose the U.S. Women's Open — the major she first played when she was 12 — to announce that she will step away at the end of the year. The 29-year-old American became emotional while talking about the amount of work no one sees and the loneliness she has faced.

Recommended Videos

Thompson said she has contemplated semi-retirement the last few years and cited mental health as one of the factors that contributed to her decision.

“I think we all have our struggles, especially out here,” she said. "Unfortunately in golf you lose more than you win, so it’s an ongoing battle to continue to put yourself out there in front of the cameras and continuing to work hard and maybe not seeing the results you want and getting criticized for it. So it’s hard.

“I will stay, yes, I've struggled with it — I don't think there's somebody out here that hasn't,” she said. “It's just a matter of how well you hide it, which is very sad.”

Thompson is playing her 18th U.S. Women's Open before turning 30. She won the first of her 15 LPGA title at age 16. She is known as much for the majors she lost as the one she captured at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2014 when she was 19.

EDITOR’S NOTE — This story includes a discussion of suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the U.S. is available by calling or texting 988. There is also an online chat at 988lifeline.org .

She made a vague reference to Grayson Murray, who spoke openly about alcoholism and his struggles with depression and anxiety from life as a tour professional. Murray, who won the Sony Open in January, died by suicide on Saturday.

“Being out here can be a lot. It can be lonely,” she said as her voice began to crack and she wiped away tears. "I just think — especially with what's happened in golf, as of recent, too — a lot of people don't realize a lot of what we go through as a professional athlete.

“We're doing what we love. We’re trying the best every single day. You know, we’re not perfect. We’re humans. Words hurt. It’s hard to overcome sometimes. ... I might not have a huge friend group, but to have the people that matter the most around me have gotten me through some really hard times."

Exactly what semi-retirement means is not clear. Thompson, whose last LPGA victory came nearly five years ago, said she would love to be on the Solheim Cup team one last time. She likes fitness and is launching an app. But it was time to find something else.

“I’ve only known golf as my life,” Thompson said. “So it’s nice to branch out and be able to enjoy other things.”

The news surprised LPGA players. The notice was posted, and then deleted, a couple of times on various social media channels. Thompson was on the course when it first went out.

“She really dedicated her time to growing the game,” Nelly Korda said. “It’s sad to see that she’s obviously leaving and not going to be out here with us, but she’s had an amazing career, and I wish her the best in this new chapter of her life.”

Thompson was 12 when she qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles, at the time the youngest ever to qualify. She also set an LPGA Tour record as the youngest winner when she captured the Navistar LPGA Classic at age 16.

Both records since have been broken.

Thompson was a runner-up four times in the majors. She lost a five-shot lead in the 2021 U.S. Women's Open at The Olympic Club with a 41 on the back nine. Most famous was the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2017 , and she got emotional talking about that.

She was headed for an easy victory in the final round when the LPGA discovered she improperly marked her golf ball on a green in the third round. She was penalized two shots for the violation and two shots for signing for an incorrect score because of the penalty.

“Is this a joke?” she said when a rules official informed her on the 13th hole of the final round that she had been docked four shots, turning a three-shot lead into a one-shot deficit. She rallied to force a playoff before losing to So Yeon Ryu.

“That was a huge moment in my career — not a great one,” she said. “I look at it as I grew a fan base that I never thought I would have in that moment. It’s an unfortunate circumstance, but to be there and to hear chants of my name on 17 coming down the stretch and just to be able to sign all the autographs and go through that moment ... the hardest moment of my career was like a blessing.

"I gained fans that I never thought I would have.”

Thompson grew up playing with two older brothers, both of whom reached the PGA Tour, and she was renowned for her power. She accepted an exemption to play a PGA Tour event in Las Vegas last year , keeping fans in suspense whether she could make the cut until fading.

Thompson could not say how often she would play, only that she would “take it day by day and see how I feel.”

“But I'm very content with this being my last full-time schedule year,” she said.
