Celebrate 50 Years of Hip-Hop With These 5 Upcoming Concerts
See dj kool herc, run-dmc, the wu-tang clan and more perform live this summer..
Although the 50th anniversary of hip-hop is technically this October – in step with the first time that the “Father of Hip-Hop” DJ Kool Herc mixed records live at a Bronx party – celebrations have been underway since the beginning of the year. From books chronicling the “Golden Era” of New York’s mixtapes from decades past to a Brooklyn library exhibition historicizing Jay-Z’s career, the music industry is brimming with projects paying tribute to both hip-hop’s progenitors and today’s contemporary artists.
Perhaps the best way to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, however, is to experience those making music history in real time. Over the next few months, a series of star-studded concerts and festivals are set to happen across the country, and while lots of rappers are holding their own solo concerts, a select few events will bring together defining artists and groups such as DJ Kool Herc himself, Run-DMC , the Wu-Tang Clan , Mary J. Blige and more.

PHILADELPHIA, March 9, 2023 – 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, with celebrations planned both nationally and globally — including many here in Philadelphia.
Read on to see how Philly helped define what hip-hop is today, as well as info on 50th-anniversary events and concerts from local and national hip-hop acts, with more to be announced throughout the year.
Hip-Hop History:
On August 11, 1973, in the rec room of an apartment building in the Bronx, a new musical form entered the world .
The night in question was a back-to-school party featuring a soundtrack of popular artists like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and The Meters. The host of the bash, 18-year-old Clive Campbell, took to the DJ booth and queued up heavily percussive, dance-friendly portions of songs, known as breaks, on two turntables. With a copy of the same record on each turntable, Campbell — better known as DJ Kool Herc — was able to loop these high-energy breaks through a technique called the merry-go-round. The merry-go-round was the basis for the genre we now know as hip-hop.
Taking hold at block parties and among Black, Latino and Caribbean American communities, hip-hop spread from the underground to the mainstream, thanks to one of the first hip-hop records, Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight, released in 1979.
Philly’s Hip-Hop History:
By the late 1970s, hip-hop was thriving in Philadelphia. In 1979, Philly rapper Lady B (one of the first female hip-hop artists) released To The Beat Y’all, putting the city on the hip-hop map. A few years later, in 1985, Philly rapper Schoolly D helped define gangsta rap with his single P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?).
Through the late 1980s and 1990s, Philly’s hip-hop scene flourished with big-name acts bringing attention to the city. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (known these days as Will Smith) won the first-ever Grammy for best rap performance for their song Parents Just Don’t Understand, in 1989. Blending jazz and live instrumentation with rapping, The Roots have been musical mainstays in Philadelphia since founders Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter first performed together during a talent show while they were students at Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in 1989.
In the late ’90s, when hip-hop experienced a commercial breakthrough, Philly-born artists like Eve and Beanie Sigel gained mainstream attention with releases on major record labels. Meanwhile, musicians like Adam Blackstone found notoriety performing with the likes of Jay-Z.
Today, Philly is home to some of hip-hop’s most imaginative and groundbreaking acts. In addition to his anthemic music, Meek Mill continues to push for criminal justice reform in Philadelphia. Tierra Whack, dubbed the “future of hip hop,” has gripped the world with her boundary-pushing style, experimenting with time and genre. Hip-hop has always served as a vehicle for identity, a means for artists and listeners alike to share their political beliefs, fashion choices, and social and economic realities and to speak truth to power. An amalgamation of various art forms — including poetry, breakdancing, MCing, graffiti and storytelling — hip-hop is a multi-discipline art form.
50th-Anniversary Events:
Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival Sunday, June 18, 2023 Commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, the all-day Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival features floats, performances and food. Spectators at this year’s parade should keep an eye out for a float dedicated to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. (Stay tuned for more details.) Where: Various locations including Malcolm X Park, 5100 Pine Street
Love + Grit, Visit Philadelphia’s Podcast – Season 4 Visit Philadelphia’s podcast about the city’s best-kept secrets and biggest exports recently returned for its fourth season. This go-around, hosts Laiya St. Clair, Rachel Ferguson and Justin Pizzi pay homage to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop through interviews with musical changemakers like DJ Jazzy Jeff and Adam Blackstone .

From the late ‘90s to the 2000s, the world saw a new wave of artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. Their contribution to the music scene has helped hip-hop to evolve further into trap music and mumble rap. The following artists are newcomers to the game that are going on to continue the innovation of hip-hop music.
“Rack City,” “Best Friend” and “Go Loko” are all hits you’ll hear with tickets to the Str8 To The Club Tour. The duo has teamed up several times in the past on songs like “West Coast Weekend” and “Run” with 21 Savage and BIA.
This tour will be Saweetie’s first headliner, giving the “Icy Grl” rapper an opportunity to promote her music. The 2017 single “Icy Grl” brought Saweetie mainstream attention, with critics from publications like XXL and the LA Times praising her freestyle skills. She dropped the EP, Icy , in 2019 with the single, “My Type” becoming a Billboard Mainstream Top 40 hit. Enjoy a visually bold concert experience live on The Scarlet Tour , which marks the Grammy-award-winning rapper’s first North American arena venture.
Lil Tjay’s music is a true form of self-expression and calls back to one of hip-hop’s purposes in creating a space to freely speak on the violence and hardships experienced in life, particularly by Black men. The rapper will be promoting his newest album, 222 , while touring North America, New Zealand and Australia. Latin Stars Bringing a New Sound to Hip-Hop
When hip-hop culture began spreading throughout New York, it naturally influenced the music of neighboring communities, particularly those with Latin and Caribbean roots. This created a path for famous New York rappers like Fat Joe and Angie Martinez, who have Puerto Rican origins. Reggaeton, a music style popularized in Puerto Rico, was influenced by Jamaican music, just like hip-hop. This intersection helped people like Daddy Yankee and Don Omar become acclaimed figures in the global music scene. Check out the following Latin singers and rappers that are bringing a new sound to hip-hop.
Armando Christian Pérez aka Pitbull is an iconic Cuban-American rapper and singer-songwriter whose music career took off in the 2000s. While his debut album, M.I.A.M.I., was released in 2004, it was Pitbull Starring in Rebelution (2009) that made Pérez a breakout artist. The lead singles, “I Know You Want Me(Calle Ocho)” and “Hotel Room Service,” shot to the Top 10 of Billboard ’s Hot 100 and succeeded abroad in several European nations. Pitbull has collaborated with artists like Ying Yang Twins , DJ Khaled, Shakira, Ne-Yo and dozens more. He has won upwards of 48 awards from Billboard and the US and Latin Grammys, in categories like Top Rap Song, Best Urban Performance and Latin Song of the Year.
Get Pitbull tickets and catch this superstar on The Trilogy Tour alongside global Latin stars Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias. The trio will put on unique sets during each stop, showcasing their versatile styles. Fans can expect a thrilling mix of rap, reggaeton and dance hits like “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” “Bailando” and “Give Me Everything” with tickets to The Trilogy Tour.
Peso Pluma has become a prominent figure in the “corridos tumbados” movement. The movement revitalized regional Mexican music, fusing it with trap, hip-hop and urbano styles. Tracks like “Ella Naila Sola” and “Luna” made Pluma one of Billboard ’s Latin Artists on the Rise, with three of his singles making it to the Top 10. The Guadalajara-born rapper received nominations for awards like Viral Anthem and Artist to Watch at the 2023 MTV Millennial Awards. He has worked with Latin artists like Becky G and Yng Lvcas, whose single “La Bebé” (Remix), won the pair the Remix of the Year award at the 2023 Premios Tu Música Urbano.
Get your Peso Pluma tickets now and see him embark on his first US tour. Beginning in July and through late October, the Mexican singer-songwriter will be making stops in 17 major US cities.

Jhayco released his debut album, Famouz , in 2019. It featured the single “No Me Conoce,” which shot to the top of Latin music charts and became a multi-certified US hit. Jhayco’s success continued with his sophomore album, Timelezz , which secured the No. 2 spot on Billboard ’s Top Latin Albums chart. His collaboration with Bad Bunny on “Daikiti,” earned both Puerto Rican rappers a Best Urban Song nomination at the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards. Enjoy addictive dance tracks like “Medusa” and “Mami Chula” on the Vida Rockstar tour with Jhayco tickets .

History of R&B Music
R&B, which stands for Rhythm and Blues and is also referred to as R’n’B, is a form of popular music that emerged among African-American communities in the 1940s. It was made by African Americans and mostly targeted African Americans living in urban areas. For this reason, it was initially called “race music,” which was changed for being offensive.
This genre of music is believed to have derived from blues, jazz, folk, and gospel. It changed a lot over the decades. In the 1950s, it was mostly similar to rock n roll and was commonly categorized as such. It was used to refer to electric blues, soul, and gospel as well.
In the 1970s, R&B moved away from rock and was mostly identified with soul and funk. Starting from the 1980s, it was infused with pop, soul, funk, electronic, and hip-hop, resulting in contemporary R&B. The electric guitar was ditched for instruments such as keyboards, drum machines, and synthesizers, making the music very similar to hip-hop.
Biggest R&B Concerts
In the mood for some R&B concerts? Why not attend the Sol Blume Music Festival that takes place in Sacramento, California? It is particularly suited for modern fans of R&B.
The R&B Only Fest is also worth visiting. Organized by COLORS Worldwide, this festival takes place in multiple cities across the nation, so be on the lookout when it hits your city.
What Seats are the Best at a Concert
The answer varies with each venue, but generally, the seats in the middle offer the greatest musical experience. Not only is the sound quality great there, but you also get an amazing view of the stage and the performers. Be warned though: the good seats are also the most expensive.
How to Buy Cheap Concert Tickets
Maybe you are a fan of modern-day R&B, or you miss the 90s old-school R&B concerts and want to experience them once again. Friday's lineup includes rap legend Jeezy , Juvenile , known for club classics like "Back That Thang Up," Slick Rick , and Doug E. Fresh , who recently performed at the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala in May. These musicians share the Friday night stage with artists 8Ball & MJG and Big Daddy Kane in what is billed as a "celebration of 50 years of hip hop."
