Nokona - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Family friendly Texas Destinations
Nokona Baseball Glove Factory Tour, Nocona
As the first buds are bursting from the trees in North Texas, I’m already feeling Spring in the air, and with Spring comes baseball! Anxious to hear the crack of the bat, my eight-year-old son and I traveled to the Nokona Baseball Glove Factory in the small town of Nocona, near the Red River, to watch as they produce the only baseball glove still made in America!
Know Before You Go
Tours are offered every Monday and Friday at 10:30am and 1:30pm, with the exception of some holidays. Call and confirm before going.
You can order a glove before the tour, or bring a glove from home to have your name laser-engraved on it.
My son, at 8, was completely intrigued the entire time. Because it is a factory, and some items are hot and potentially unsafe for small hands, I wouldn’t recommend for children much younger than him.
One of my favorite items was the FIRST gloves, little blue and pink gloves that had the baby’s name and date of birth stitched on the inside! Stitching like this is a special order item, and can only be done before the glove is assembled.
Videos About Nokona
Under the impression that the tour started at 10am, we arrived in town a few minutes late, and I was quite relieved to find out that the tour actually began at 10:30, making me….. early. It had to happen eventually.
While we waited, we watched several videos about Nokona Baseball Gloves, includeing an interview from Nolan Ryan, who described his VERY first baseball glove, a Nokona!
During the tour, we saw many very old gloves that had been sent to the factory for repairs.
Nokona is a small factory of only about 20 employees, and during our tour of the factory, we met every one of them. The factory felt like a family, with many having worked there 30 years or more, and our tour guide over 50 years!
A Brief History
Our tour began with a history of Nokona Sporting Equipment, which opened in the 1930’s. If you noticed that the factory’s spelling is different than the town’s spelling of Nocona, it’s because the town had a law against any business using the town’s name.
The town is named after Peta Nocona, the Cherokee chief and father of Quanah Parker. To learn more about Nocona and Quanah Parker, click HERE to read about Old Fort Parker.
Nokona’s First Glove
Inside the display cases, there were a progression of old baseball and softball gloves, but none so old as this one. One of their very first gloves ever produced, these gloves were used by baseball players not so much to catch the ball, but as to just knock it out of the air, then scoop it up and throw it!
If you love the history of baseball, check out the Texas Vintage Base Ball League. There are seven Vintage Base Ball teams which play at special events around the state. Click HERE to visit their website.
The Farmers Branch Mustangs hold an annual Vintage Baseball Festival each April, click HERE to visit their facebook page for more information.
Leather and Lace
Our first stop inside the factory was to see all the leather that is used to make the gloves! Nokona uses cow, buffalo and even kangaroo leather, and we were able to feel samples of all 3! They also have different color leather laces for the gloves for special orders!
While photos aren’t allowed back in the factory during the tour, they did allow us a few. We watched as they cut the glove pieces, stamped them and sewed the pieces together. This glove has just been turned right-side out and stretched!
Some of the final products, awaiting 2 of the quality control inspections!
After our tour, we spent time looking around the store. In addition to new gloves, they sell shirts, hats and other Nokona items! If you purchase a new glove, pre-made glove at the factory, they can have your name laser-engraved for you!
More to Do in Nocona
After our tour, we had a great time walking around Historic Downtown Nocona! There was much more to see and do, and we had a great time!

In 1879, Daddy Joe Justin came to North Texas and began making boots. After his death, his son’s moved to Fort Worth to continue his legacy, known as the Justin Boot Company. His daughter, Enid Justin, stayed in Nocona and also wanted to continue her father’s work, opening the Nocona Boot Company in 1925, which continued to make quality boots in Nocona until they were purchased by Justin Industries, parent company of Justin Boots, in 1981. The Nocona Boot Factory was closed in 1999, but it’s still a great building, just waiting on someone to come make a museum out of it! It appeared one end was used to sell antiques during our visit.
Fengolio is another prominent name in the town of Nocona. Fengolio began making boots after the closing of the factory, and today turn out the James Montague Handmade Boot Line. Click HERE to read more.
Speaking of Fengolio, you’ll have to leave Downtown Nocona for a short drive to Fengolio BBQ, and don’t miss getting a Bowl of Crap. Homemade beans, brisket, sausage, it’s definitely yummier than it’s name! Click HERE to see their facebook page!
Before leaving Nocona, my son and I took a few minutes to hunt down a geocache just a short walk from the Nokona Baseball Glove Factory at the First United Methodist Church. It was a lovely church that we would have overlooked had we not been searching for the geocache. If geocaching is new to you, it’s a fun and free activity, great for all ages! A Small Town In Texas Is Home To One Of The Last Baseball Glove Factories In The U.S.
Bill Zeeble
The Nokona baseball glove factory in the small town of Nocona, Texas, is one of the last remaining baseball glove factories in the U.S. Bill Zeeble/KERA hide caption
The Nokona baseball glove factory in the small town of Nocona, Texas, is one of the last remaining baseball glove factories in the U.S.
About 100 miles northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth, past pastures of crops and cattle, sits Nocona, Texas, population 3,000, home to the Nokona baseball glove factory, one of the last baseball glove factories in the United States.
Inside, there are stacks of tanned and dyed kangaroo, buffalo and calfskins piled at one end of the 20,000-square-foot one-story shop. "We literally bring leather in through one door and magically, ball gloves come out the door at the very end," says Rob Storey, Nokona's executive vice president.
"That, and about 45 labor operations, and you've got a ball glove."
Storey should know — this is the family business. To survive the Depression, his grandfather, Bob Storey, added baseball gloves to the family's line of leather goods in 1934. Since then, just about every U.S. competitor has moved production overseas.
Grandfather Bob, who died in 1980, said he would rather quit and go fishing than import Nokonas.
Rob Storey says that these days, being the nation's only baseball glove maker in continuous operation for 85 years gives Nokona a competitive advantage: "Because we have people that understand the game of baseball. Our competitors are making them in factories. [In] a lot of those factories, people have never even seen a baseball game or know what it is. Sure, it would be easy to go over there and do something. But that's not who we are. We're not about easy."
Baseball Hall Of Famer And Pioneer Frank Robinson Dies At 83
Nokona and its 75 employees make, market and sell their mostly handmade gloves in the town with same name. The brand honors Comanche Chief Peta Nocona . The company couldn't legally use the city's spelling, so Storey's grandfather changed the c to a k, and it's been spelled that way ever since.
At about the midway spot on the factory floor, Martin Gomez is busy turning gloves, something he has done for 19 years. It's a big deal because every glove is first sewn inside-out, and Gomez is considered a master.
Martin Gomez has worked at Nokona for 19 years. He is considered a master at making these baseball gloves. Bill Zeeble/KERA hide caption
Martin Gomez has worked at Nokona for 19 years. He is considered a master at making these baseball gloves.
"It's not that hard," says Gomez. "It takes time to learn, to get used to. Like the first time you start to work, it gave me a blister all over my hands, but you get used to it."
Storey says Gomez is modest. If he's not careful, he can tear the leather and hand-stitching. Fast, practiced, yet efficient, Gomez slides a rod in each inside-out finger, pushes it hard against a wooden dowel and turns each leather finger back the right way.
First, he sprays leather softener on the inside-out glove. Then, says Storey, he heats it on a 250-degree metal form.
"It's very critical to do that," says Storey, "so that you don't rip out any of the seams while we're going through this process, because this process in some ways is more difficult on the glove than the game of baseball."
The game of baseball, after all, is what Nokonas are all about, even if the brand is not nearly as well-known as sporting goods giants like Rawlings or Wilson. In the youth market, though, it's big.
"I grew up using a Nokona glove," recalls major league pitcher Robby Scott. "My first glove that I ever really remember was a first baseman's mitt that was a Nokona."
We first talked to Arizona relief pitcher Scott between World Series games last year when he was with the Red Sox — the Sox would go on to win the Series. Scott says there's just something special about Nokona: "I will never wear a different glove," he says. "It's a special bond I have with them. They could have 200 players wearing their gloves. But to me it seems special because they make it seem like I'm the only one."
And, says Storey, Nokona is the only maker he knows of that will refurbish its old, tattered gloves.
He says that doesn't happen with gloves made overseas.

Art Galleries
There are two art galleries in Nocona, L. G. Lemons Artist Studio and Gallery and The Gallery, both located in the historical downtown area.
L.G. Lemons' art celebrates the uniqueness and spirit of the great state of Texas, “Texas Pop”. The icons, attitudes, color, and history of Texas play an important role in the creation of an L. G. Lemons original painting or fine art photograph.
Inspired by details of ordinary life, The Gallery artist, Don MacLaughlin, likes to paint images that reveal emotion and expression. Working from both live models and from photographs, Don captures the inner thoughts and feelings of his subjects and strives to find the beauty in everyday things.
Outdoor fun
What better way to celebrate the great outdoors than with a romp through Nocona's North Texas Hill Country?
Wineries/Brewery
Nocona is a wine and brewery destination. We've been associated with winemaking for decades. Nocona lies at the convergence of two beautifully enticing Texas wine trails- the Red River Wine Trail and the Cross Timbers Wine Trail. Combined, they represent a unique number of boutique Texas wineries and vineyards. Experience all the fun events, live music, great food and drink for all occasions.
Listed as #8 " The Most Beautiful Lakes in Texas " by Only in Your State , October 2022. Lake Nocona provides an ideal fishing environment for many types of fish. Bring your rod and tackle box and try your luck at wrangling largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, white bass and sunfish. Lake Nocona is classified as the fourth-best bass fishing lake in Texas!
Not into fishing? Boating, swimming, and water activities are abundant on Lake Nocona.
Blue Mound Fitness and Walking Trails Explore the trails and fitness equipment located on the historic site of Blue Mound. With an elevation of more than 1,000 feet, this is one of North Montague County’s highest vantage points, located just north of the city limits of Nocona. This stately mound offered a look-out point for Comanche Indians and later for Cowboys pushing Longhorns on trail drives. Now, this famous High Point will offer the public an area to get away; to the quiet; to walk and reflect; to enjoy the distant views or share a moment with others in the shade of the gazebo.
Enid Justin Park The Miss Enid Justin Park, supported by the Nocona Lions, features a variety of children's outdoor play equipment, a skateboard ramp, two large pavilions complete with barbecue grills and picnic tables, two tennis courts and a volleyball court. It is located on the west side of town near the golf course. This park has a new community-built playground, "Peta's Playground", that includes equipment for special needs children.
Mary Beckman Davis Park This park is the cornerstone of the historical downtown area. This tree-lined park has benches and a quaint-covered pavilion/stage. It is center stage for all the fun events throughout the year.
Indian Oaks Golf Course This 18-hole layout is tight and challenging. This course is in a wooded rolling hill setting with four small bodies of water and bent greens. The condition of the course is excellent and offers a beautiful and challenging experience for the golfer.
The signature hole is No. 15, a 346-yard par 4 with a severe dogleg fairway. The back nine plays a little more difficult, with particularly tough finishing holes. No. 17 is a 205-yard par 3, followed by a 500-yard-plus par 5 as the finisher.
Indian Valley Raceway This non-profit dragstrip is an outlaw track that is owned and operated by the Nocona Gas Junkies. The strip is 2500 ft. long with 1400 ft. of asphalt. It’s equipped with bleachers and a concession stand. Come experience some grass-root racing throughout the year.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
