v upset about the sound. could barely recognize what song they were playing.

first band had a clear sound but wasn't the one i was coming for

night beats suffered from the venue's lack of time or skills of the soundguy or whatsoever and couldn't offer them the sound they deserved.

really annoying

This band is just an amazing trio. I still can believe that such amount of energy can come out from just 3 musicians.

I love their dark and groovy riffs.

Great music, and amazing performance.

Night Beats is the R&B Inspired Western Psychedelic Rock project from multi-instrumentalist Danny Lee Blackwell. Originally from Texas, Danny has been recording as Night Beats since 2009. Night Beats operates as a semi-solo project for Danny, as he writes and records mostly everything by himself. Night Beats latest album, Rajan , released this summer, and was featured on rotation here at WLUW. The album expertly blends eastern influence with country western motifs for a beautifully unique experience. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Danny before his performance at Sleeping Village here in Chicago last week, here’s what we talked about.

After our chat, Danny was kind enough to sign a copy of his Live In Valentine record for me. He even went backstage to get a sharpie since I forgot mine. I sat for a while in Sleeping Village enjoying the atmosphere and a couple signature drinks they had on tap. The relaxing jazz music playing over the speakers was a perfect compliment to the wood grain aesthetic and warm lighting. Over time, the bar filled out with people eagerly awaiting the show.

Once doors to the venue opened, people began to congregate from the front bar area and into the back where the performance was to be held. When the support act, Moonwalks, went on stage, the doors closed again and people were ready to rock. The three piece DIY psych outfit from Detroit had just played their hometown the night prior, and the energy was still palpable. Drummer Kerrigan Pearce, guitarist Jake Dean, and bassist Kate Gutwald rocked out through their set,

Before Night Beats came out, I made sure to move right up to the front of the stage. Before long, the venue was filled as fans packed in all around me. As I discussed with Danny in our interview, Night Beats is performing their new album Rajan from start to finish for each of their shows. This likely surprised most people, who are probably used to a different structure of setlist. Throughout the show, though, I understood further why Danny said that he thinks more bands should do this. The songs all flowed so perfectly into one another just like they did on the album, and with the instrumental limitations, the band is forced to find unique pockets for improvisation and experimentation within the songs.

night beats band tour

Danny and I spoke about how he learned to use a baglama for the first song on the record, Hot Ghee , but he didn’t bring the instrument on tour with him, so instead, guitar pedals were used to distort Danny’s guitar to bring a similar sound. The song took on a whole new life in a live setting, with explosive guitar solos from Danny unlike what I ever could have expected. The second song, Nightmare , was a total highlight for me. It’s one of my favorite songs on the record, and I loved the twists and turns that the band took with it.

Joined on stage by bassist Kyrone Oak and drummer Christopher Michael Scott, Danny seemed like he was born to perform. His band members’ relaxing demeanor meant that Danny commanded the attention of everyone in the room. His mind bending solos and expressive body language were infectious, and before long the groove had spread like wildfire throughout the audience.

The set closer was the last song on Rajan, Morocco Blues , and was another highlight for me. The song is a lot more uptempo than the previous song, 9 to 5 , which made for a nice change of pace. Danny’s reverberated guitar solos took the song to a whole different stratosphere. After the song ended, the crowd clapped and cheered, as the band members left the stage. Most of us remained locked in place, in awe of what we had just witnessed, and before we could move, the band came back out on stage for an encore. This totally surprised me, as I spoke with Danny about the setlist before the show and he didn’t mention an encore. The band proceeded to rock the house with a couple fan favorites, like Right / Wrong and That’s All You Got .

night beats band tour

To my eye, Night Beats is only getting better with time. Through 14 years in the music industry, Danny and his collaborators are becoming a force to be reckoned with. Night Beats is continuing their US tour through early October, and you can check out their latest record, Rajan, wherever you listen to music. I’d also suggest taking a look at their live session with Levitation.

The Cosmic Clash

Live music review: Night Beats and Daiistar gave Austin a modern psychedelic rock treat Saturday

When a band in Austin gets to make a record after playing their material for local audiences for months, sometimes years on end, it’s worthy of multiple rounds of applause. For Austin shoegaze/noise-pop act Daiistar, it’s been a long time coming. To celebrate the release of Daiistar’s new album Good Time , the rising Austin act enlisted the help of Seattle-born, now Texas-based band Night Beats, who are on a new album cycle of their own. The venue for their Austin stop on the circuit was East Side staple Hotel Vegas , a mecca for psychedelic rock and all of its adjacent genres. An open-air patio venue, Hotel Vegas is known for both chaotic and introspective shows, an ideal setting to discover what lies beneath the surface when exploring Austin’s vibrant music scene.

As it drew closer to 9 p.m., the Austin venue started filling up, with fans crowding the stage in anticipation of the Austin shoegaze outfit’s first Austin appearance since the April edition of Austin Psych Fest . When Daiistar took the stage, the group wasted no time to give the audience a good time. “Star Starter,” off the new record, kicked off the night with an upbeat tune that made the audience dive straight into the groove. The onstage lineup also featured Lindsay Mackin of Austin band, Annabelle Chairlegs handling auxiliary percussion duties. Mackin also collaborated with Daiistar for 2022’s edition of Levitation Festival for their opening set that featured local legends The Black Angels and Los Angeles rockers Frankie and the Witch Fingers .

Daiistar at Hotel Vegas

For the entirety of Daiistar’s set, the banter was little, if any—just the Austin shoegazers ripping through song after song with mind-boggling urgency. The crisp baselines from Misti Hamrick and the fuzzy strummed guitars from frontman Alex Capistran shined across every track in the set. The band was extra loud on Saturday night. They needed a noisy presentation to showcase their upstanding musical efforts that had been leading up to Saturday’s record release.

Daiistar Misti Hamrick

Around 10 p.m., the Night Beats trio took the stage. Since appearing at this year’s edition of Austin Psych Fest and front man Danny Rajan Billingsley’s appearance with UFO Club, co-founded with Austin psych rockers,  The Black Angels’ Christian Bland, the front man has been no stranger to Austin audiences in 2023. Night Beats’ set revolved around the psych act’s new record, Rajan , released earlier this year. For this new release, Billingsley has assembled a talented rhythm section to accompany him on this tour, a daunting task to account for all the out-of-this-world psychedelic sounds Night Beats has become known for. Night Beats didn’t wasting any time during their set—unleashing song after song with little BS to be found much like the opening act. An early set highlight came with psychedelic blues number “Blue,” complete with instrumentation that fizzled out into a psych-rock-sprinkled, jazz abyss.

Night Beats Danny

Night Beats didn’t stop there. The band kept marching on through their new album with determination, slicing through cuts like “Thank You” and “Cautionary Tale,” the former had a more chaotic Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-esque attack with searing guitar leads that sounded straight from the garage scene from which Night Beats was born. When Night Beats was finished tearing through the new record, the trio returned for a triple-barrelled encore of band classics. “Right/Wrong,” “That’s All You Got,” and “Puppet on a String” acted as the epic finale of the evening, continuing a pattern of Night Beats ripping through their music with unbridled indie-rock enthusiasm.

Fans were hoping for more from the back catalog, but the statement Night Beats made was a testament to where they are currently. Since Billingsey’s recent relocation to Texas, Austin appearances might become more frequent. The neo-psych heads are here for it, reverb-ready and all. Night Beats isn’t billed for this year’s Levitation music festival, but there are all the possibilities up in the air for Austin Psych Fest next Spring. Either way, we can’t wait for more from Danny Rajan Billingsley and Company. There are always good tunes to be had when the prolific musicians plug in to play.

Night Beats continue their U.S. tour through October before wrapping it up in San Francisco.

night beats band tour

Danny Lee Blackwell, the mastermind behind the outlaw country/bluesy rock outfit Night Beats, picked up the phone to chat with me only days after returning home from tour with the iconic band W.I.T.C.H. and beautifully existential musician Breanna Barbara. All of the adrenaline was just starting to wear off and exhaustion was beginning to set in, but his love for music was only amplified. Even with his post-tour fatigue, he was ecstatic to talk about his live Levitation Sessions that he recorded on analog tape in the Mojave Desert.

Since the pandemic, many have felt lost wandering within the realm of music. However, melody and beat still always find a way to soothe the soul—and this project intensified those feelings for Danny. He hopes that people feel less alone when experiencing this Live Session and it helps them to find a companion in music and art.

“If anything, you know music is your friend,” he says. “Music has been a friend for me, music has been something that’s helped me through [hard] times, and that’s been able to transport me to different places. It’s been able to telepathically link me with something that is warm and comforting and can maybe help you out if you’re feeling a little lost.”

Two Vinyl Variants in stock & shipping now!

Elena Childers (EC): You just got back from tour—tell me a little about touring with W.I.T.C.H., they’re awesome right?

Danny Lee Blackwell (DLB): Oh man, yeah! That tour was just one I was looking forward to for so long. When the W.I.T.C.H. tour came around, it was just the most perfect thing ever. It’s one of my favorite groups that I think had a serious impact on the way that I see how there’s just these unbelievable things that can happen and no one knows. It’s a weird thing, you know? ‘Cause sure they were a big deal especially in Zambia, but the guy Gio Arlotta who made the documentary is really honestly doing something very selfless and very I think important to the history of documenting rock ‘n’ roll. I saw an opportunity to combine whatever the fuck I’m doing with them.

EC: I love to hear all those fresh-off-of-tour feelings, the memories are still so fresh. Let’s talk about this Levitation session—all I know about it is what I’ve watched and it looks fucking awesome. You guys look so perfect in that setting, like that’s your zone.

DLB: Thank you! It was shot in Lancaster, which is in the Antelope Valley. Which is by the Mojave Desert, which is in California, which is on planet earth in the Milky Way galaxy. I had moved out to the California area right before the pandemic. I was looking for a space that [could] play a role in the film—be an element that tells its own story... To put a spin, a twist on something. The music relates to this space and I think it was really important that we also recorded it to tape. I wanted to get the analog sound out wherever we were, which is actually more simple than you’d think. You bring a generator and you can do anything anywhere!

night beats band tour

EC: How did you find the space?

DLB: I was looking for a space that could act as a kind of character in the thing. So, the setting and the scenery and the location has an impact on the way it sounds, in the way that it’s delivered, and the way that it’s appreciated when it’s heard. To make sense that the music I’ve written over these years is really for an open mind and an open face, you know? But it’s for anybody, it’s for everything and any situation.

But if you could transport somewhere and you could look out and see those cliffs and that dirt and those Joshua Trees and the sun being so bare and exposed... I think it adds an element to the music, like an underlying current you can already hear that kind of elevates it. It came about pretty quickly, I had the help of my friends Hamilton and Danny and it was just kind of a D.I.Y./ “let’s put together and figure this shit out” kind of situation. I wanted to make something that had the best kind of impact it could for someone sitting inside; also, to where they really felt transported somewhere.

night beats band tour

DLB: The short answer is yes, absolutely. I’ve been trying to find the means to do something where an album has a complete sort of visual. A film for an album is the idea there. You could make a feature type of film and make an album at the same time and you’re kind of doing two things that are already happening—at least in my head—of the visual representation and the storytelling that you’re doing through the songwriting and through the crafting and producing of an album. To me, it seems pretty natural.

EC: I love it! Well, we have to wrap up. I am curious though, if your viewers could walk away with just one kind of thought after watching this session, what would you hope that would be?

DLB: I would say that you’re not alone. If anything, you know music is your friend. Music has been a friend for me, music has been something that’s helped me through [hard] times and that’s been able to transport me to different places. It’s been able to telepathically link me with something that is warm and comforting and can maybe help you out if you’re feeling a little lost or something.

EC: Absolutely, that’s beautifully put. Thank you!

Introducing Our New Garage Rock Column With Night Beats, the Ar-Kaics, and Afflicted Man

By Evan Minsker

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Face Human and Person

Shake Appeal is a column that highlights new garage and garage-adjacent releases. This week, Evan Minsker discusses the dirty psychedelia of Seattle's Night Beats, a debut 7" from Richmond's Ar-Kaics, and Permanent Records' essential Afflicted Man reissue.

Night Beats:  Sonic Bloom [Reverberation Appreciation Society]

Seattle's Night Beats released their debut self-titled record via Trouble in Mind back in 2011. It was a psych album that pointed back to the  Nuggets era, marked more by earworms than acid-fried freakouts.  Sonic Bloom  (out via Austin Psych Fest's label) is an extension of that sound. The hooks and melodies are still pretty immediate, like on the dense and warped blues stomper "Satisfy Your Mind", but most of the tunes are longer and spacier this time around. On the title track, Night Beats employ the sort of warbling, fuzz-beaten guitars you could hear in a Wooden Shjips song. "Catch a Ride to Sonic Bloom" devolves into sludgy noise cut with ticking clocks and music boxes. It's a much more adventurous LP than their first one and well worth checking out.

Image may contain Disk and Dvd

The Ar-Kaics: "She Does Those Things to Me" b/w "Don't Need Your Love" [Speakertree]

"She Does Those Things to Me" is largely four chords played over and over, and the chorus is just the band singing the title a few times, but Richmond's Ar-Kaics took those basic elements and made a solid, catchy song—the exact sort of thing you want from the A-Side of a garage 7". They lean hard on percussion as they springboard off the verse, they shriek at the end of the bridge before offering a guitar solo, and they get quiet before finishing loud. The two tracks on their Speakertree 7" also open their  self-released LP , which they quietly put out earlier this year.

Afflicted Man:  I'm Off Me 'Ead [Permanent]

In 1980, Steve Hall released  I'm Off Me 'Ead under the name "Afflicted Man". The album found a champion in underground heroes like Byron Coley. Siltbreeze's Tom Lax wrote  that it's "too freaked out for punks, too punked out for freaks." He's right—it's a totally weird record, one that's not easily placed in the context of punk history, but one that's endlessly awesome. It's lo-fi and spacey, bleak and jammy, erratically enigmatic. The basslines are much funkier than you'd expect from that album cover; sometimes, the vocals are completely buried in the mix. Permanent's officially licensed reissue sold out immediately when it was released earlier this year, so they just pressed a bunch more. Grab it while you can.

It's all about the music

Since  1957, Sam Cooke had been turning out hits like  Twisting the Night Away, Cupid, Another Saturday Night, Chain Gang, and Having a Party.  But in 1963, he took a break from from the big orchestral productions to make  Night Beat,  an intimate recording of blues and soul songs, The band was basic -  no horns, no strings, no back- up singers, just piano, guitar, bass and drums and Sam Cooke's voice.

Taking its name and inspiration from Sam Cooke's album,  Night Beat   is four musicians (piano/vocals, guitar, upright bass and drums) with decades of experience, solid musical chops and a deep love of Rhythm and Blues. The band repertoire consists of a range of songs from the 1950's through the 1970's in a stripped-down format, that focuses on the heart and soul of the songs themselves.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks had to cancel her concert Saturday night (June 15) at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania, because of “illness in the band,” according to a brief statement shared on the singer’s official social media accounts.

Trending on Billboard

The rock icon and vocalist for Fleetwood Mac , 76, was expected to take the stage Saturday night at the latest stop on her ongoing Live in Concert Tour across the U.S.

Stevie Nicks Soars Through a Night of Songs & Stories at Mohegan Sun: 5 Best Moments

Nicks’ performance was postponed just hours before showtime.

In posts on social media, fans reported the show was canceled around the time doors were set to open, when they were already in line to enter the concert grounds. A video posted by a concertgoer in the comments of the announcement indicated soundcheck happened Saturday afternoon.

As of Sunday (June 16), Nicks’ published schedule has her performing on June 18 in Grand Rapids and June 21 in Chicago. What follows is a short break in her itinerary until July 3, when she’s set to jet to Europe for a gig in Dublin, Ireland. U.K. dates come next (Glasgow, Manchester and London), then stops in Antwerp, Belgium, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Last weekend Billboard saw Nicks and her touring band put on a lively show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, with a 15-song setlist spanning solo hits and classics from Fleetwood Mac’s discography, complemented with plenty of career anecdotes told between songs. “My stories are starting to become as long as the show,” the star joked during her June 9 performance.

Thousands of fans pack Lincoln Financial Field for the Rolling Stones

Bryanna Gallagher Image

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Tens of thousands of fans packed Lincoln Financial Field for one of the hottest concerts of the summer.

The Rolling Stones were in town Tuesday night. For many people, seeing them perform is a family affair.

We talked to fans who have been to more than 70 shows, some first timers and even one as young as eight years old.

"This will be my third Stones concert, so I'm excited to share it with the younger generation," said the Nguyen family.

People from all generations made their way to South Philadelphia.

"This is my first concert. I've always wanted to see the Stones. It's crazy, 40-50 years later they're putting on the show. So it's a real honor to be here," said Matthew Fritz, who came with his dad.

"My dad took me to see the Stones in 1966. My son is taking me to see at Lincoln Financial Field in 2024," said Bob Douglas who was here with his dad, also named Bob.

Fifty-eight years ago, the pair saw the Stones in Atlantic City. The band jumped out of a helicopter and walked feet away from them at the Steel Pier.

"I said Bob, 'That's the Rolling Stones.' He was six years old. I could pick him up and put him on my shoulders. They walked right by us," said the elder Douglas.

Decades later, Mick still has it, and their fan base proves that.

"We want to see Mick dance... just bring it. He's got a lot of life in him for his age," said Candice and Joe Kent, of Phoenixville.

This summer is jam-packed with outdoor concert series. Don't miss a beat with our 2024 Green Bay-area guide to who's playing where

night beats band tour

Pro tip for the summer of 2024: Just keep that folding outdoor chair in the car.

If you’re a music lover, you’re going to need it.

The Green Bay-area calendar for the next three months is so packed with outdoor concert series you’ll be hard-pressed to find a day or night of the week when there isn’t a reason to grab your shades, the family or a couple of friends and soak up all that a whirlwind summer has to offer.

If a cold beverage just seems to taste better outside in the summer, something about music played outside sounds all the sweeter, too.

Here’s our annual guide to where to find this season’s musical opportunities to kick back or get up and move. The majority of them are free, but some require tickets, as noted. Remember that carry-in policies vary from event to event and weather can change things up last minute. While the focus here is primarily community music series, many bars and restaurants also offer patio performances throughout the season.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
