MSC vs Royal Caribbean: my opinion after I’ve tried both!

Hello Cruise Fans!

Today I am quite happy to write this article because we are going to compare two of my favorite cruise lines, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean .

If you don’t know yet, I am Italian, and as you can imagine I have been on many cruises with MSC.

However, I also tried Royal Caribbean and can already tell you that I found many differences between the two .

So let’s start right away with this MSC Cruises vs. Royal Caribbean comparison!

As a starting point, I wanna say that both MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean have impressive fleets .

In particular, Royal Caribbean is renowned for having some of the world’s largest ones , like the new Icon of the Seas (which is currently the largest cruise ship in the world).

Many of its ships have distinct neighborhoods and offer a wide range of activities, dining options, and entertainment.

Every class has its own unique features, for example, the Oasis Class has introduced the like zip line and the surf simulator. While, the Quantum Class ships, while slightly smaller, have introduced very technological features like the North Star observation capsule and indoor skydiving.

The Miami-based cruise line currently has a total of 28 ships that can carry from about 2,000 passengers to over 7,500 passengers. No other cruise line in the world can carry so many guests.

Additionally, the fleet continues to expand with 3 new ships already announced and joining Royal Caribbean in 2024, 2025, and 2026.

On the other hand, Italian-owned MSC Cruises expanded very quickly , it launched several large ships year after year.

The current fleet consists of 22 ships , many of which are among the largest in the world.

Many of them, such as those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes, are known for their European-style glamorous design and impressive onboard features like LED domes.

The company also prioritizes environmental technology. The largest ship in the fleet, 2022’s MSC World Europa, uses cleaner-burning liquified natural gas (LNG) as fuel.

Furthermore, the MSC fleet is also constantly expanding. MSC World America, a 215,000-ton ship that will cruise from Miami, will arrive in 2025. While, for 2026, the arrival of MSC World Asia has already been announced.

Let’s now compare the cabin offers between Royal Caribbean and MSC. As you can imagine, there are quite a few differences in the design, amenities, and services that come with them.

Like on many cruise ships, Royal Caribbean cabins are categorized into 4 main types: inside cabin, ocean view cabin, balcony cabin, and suite.

Each type is carefully designed to maximize the comfort. For example, some newer inside cabins on ships in the Oasis and Quantum classes have virtual balconies that provide real-time ocean views on an interior screen.

Balcony cabins are the most popular and the most loved ones if you consider the comfort/price ratio. Many passengers love being able to take in the view and enjoy the outdoors while they sail.

Another very positive aspect of Royal Caribbean is the suites . They are spacious and offer additional perks like access to exclusive lounges and dining venues. In the highest suite categories, you even get a butler service known as the ‘Royal Genie’.

MSC Cruises offers a similar range of cabin categories. The main idea behind them is to merge a stylish design with technological features .

For example, on MSC you use MSC for Me , an app that helps you with all the services on the ship. You can book tables, reserve seats for the shows, check the daily program, chat with other passengers on the ships, and many other things.

Moreover, I personally love their Yacht Club suites that offer an “all-inclusive” cruise experience with access to private areas, including a dedicated lounge, pool, and restaurant.

In this aspect, I think that the level of luxury is comparable to Royal Caribbean’s suites, but MSC distinguishes for its unique Italian styling.

Time to compare one of my favorite parts of cruising: the food !

Royal Caribbean is renowned for its variety and innovative dishes across all fleets.

As you probably know, the main dining room offers a multi-course dining experience which is included in the cruise fare. The menus on Royal Caribbean change every night and usually let you taste various international cuisines.

For a more casual meal, every ship has a buffet that offers an extensive array of dishes. You’ll find the super classic hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, pizza, etc.

In addition to the complementary options, Royal Caribbean provides a good variety of specialty dining options such as Chops Grille for steak lovers, Izumi for sushi, and the Wonderland restaurant for those looking for a unique culinary adventure.

On the contrary, MSC Cruises emphasizes more on Mediterranean tastes in its dining offerings, with a strong focus on Italian cuisine among its various international options.

The buffets on MSC are massive and offer literally everything, from fresh fruit and salads to pizza and ethnic specialties.

Moreover, both cruise lines are meticulous with special dietary needs and offer gluten-free options and special dishes for allergies.

Let me add just a little personal opinion . I tried both and I must say that the food was very good in both cases.

For my taste, I preferred MSC, because the dishes are closer to my personal preferences (as you can imagine I eat a lot of pasta and pizza). But Royal Caribbean surprised me with the quality of ingredients and the excellent execution.

Below is a photo comparing the lobster of both companies. Regarding this specific dish I preferred Royal Caribbean but both were very good .

The Entertainment

I found that the entertainment type was quite different between the two cruise lines.

At the theatre, Royal Caribbean ships feature impressive Broadway-style productions , including famous musicals like “Mamma Mia!” and “We Will Rock You” along with original productions such as “The Gift” and “Spectra’s Cabaret”.

I liked the show’s quality, however, they have quite a few dialogues that can be boring if you don’t speak English.

On the other hand, MSC has more productions based on acrobatics and dance that are perfect for an international audience.

Also, in terms of fun Royal Caribbean definitely doesn’t disappoint. Some of the most loved activities include escape rooms, rock climbing walls, and zip lines.

While on MSC you can often find F1 simulators, bowling alleys, and small 4D cinemas.

The itineraries and the price

Now let’s talk about the itineraries because again there are several differences.

Royal Caribbean’s itineraries are quite varied but most of the cruises focus on regions like the Caribbean and Alaska . There are some cruises to Europe and the Arabian Gulf but in much smaller numbers.

On the contrary, MSC is expanding a lot in the states and has added several itineraries in recent years, but still its main focus at the moment seems to remain the Mediterranean .

One thing that I really like is that both companies have their own private island. Royal Caribbean has Perfect Day at CocoCay and MSC has Ocean Cay . Both of them are in the Bahamas and enhance the overall cruise experience.

In terms of the price, as I’ve already explained in this article, the cost of a cruise can significantly vary based on the destination, length, and time of year.

In general, I can say that MSC Cruises tends to be a bit cheaper . In particular, they have good family-friendly deals because kids sail free under certain conditions . This could lead to quite big savings for family vacations.

To conclude

In conclusion, as I have already repeated several times, both companies are great for a cruise .

I have tried both of them and always had a good time, in fact, I can tell you that they are my two favorite cruise lines ever .

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

• Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
• Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
• Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Are you planning on booking a cruise vacation and comparing Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises to see which cruise line is best for you? This is a great question since these are both popular and well-loved cruise lines.

While Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises do share some similarities, there are some important differences to be aware of. As someone who has enjoyed cruising with both MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean, I know first-hand that each cruise line have so much to offer.

With that being said, here’s everything you need to know about Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises.

Why Cruisers Like Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is part of the Royal Caribbean Group, formerly known as Royal Caribbean International. Royal Caribbean is considered to be a contemporary cruise line known for its great entertainment, as well as for having the most innovative and largest cruise ships in the world.

Here Are the Reasons Why Cruisers Like Royal Caribbean

Cruise Ship Design

If you’ve never sailed with Royal Caribbean, Royal Caribbean cruise ships will blow your mind.

Royal Caribbean is home to some of the most innovative and incredible cruise ships at sea. Royal Caribbean’s Icon-Class are the largest cruise ships at sea, at over 248,000 tons and more than 7,600 passengers.

These incredible cruise ships offer more features and attractions than any other cruise line. If you want to sail on a cruise ship with tons of activities, check out the Icon-Class and Oasis-Class cruise ships (approximately 220,000 tons).

Furthermore, the Quantum-Class ships have great onboard attractions as well. Although they are a bit smaller in size (approximately 160,000 tons) and have a capacity of over 4,500 passengers, the Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-Class is well-loved and popular with families and kids.

Royal Caribbean’s older cruise ship designs are still great. However, you won’t find some of the bells and whistles that are present on their newer ships. Furthermore, you may notice some signs of age on these ships, as they can be over 15 to 20 years old.

Sailing on one of Royal Caribbean’s older ships is a great way to cruise for less . This is ideal for families going on their first cruise or those cruising on a budget.

Before booking your cruise, it’s important to research the cruise ships and itineraries to find the perfect cruise for you.

Cruise Line Private Island

When it comes to cruise line private islands, nobody does it like Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at Cococay truly is a special place to visit.

The great thing about cruising to the Bahamas or the Caribbean with Royal Caribbean is that many of their itineraries stop at Perfect Day at Cococay. Whether you’re sailing on a brand new Icon-Class cruise ship or an older Royal Caribbean cruise ship , chances are you’ll visit Cococay when you book a Caribbean itinerary.

Included: Perfect Day at Cococay has multiple beaches, a large pool, activities for kids, bars for adults, a waterpark, and even a beach club. Furthermore, complimentary snack shacks are located around the island, and two barbeque-style buffets are also included.

Extra charge: If you’re a thrill seeker, you have to visit Cococay’s waterpark. Here, you will find Daredevils Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America.

When you visit Cococay you can book zip lining, snorkeling, and jet ski excursions. There is also a hot air balloon, which provides an amazing view of the island.

Variety of Dining Options & Restaurants

When you sail with Royal Caribbean, there are many dining options to choose from. There’s a variety of included restaurants and specialty restaurants that do cost extra.

The free casual dining options include Windjammer Marketplace (buffet), El Loco Fresh, Sorrento’s Pizza, Cafe Promenade, and Central Park Cafe (on select ships). If you’re looking for a nice sit-down meal, the main dining room is a great included dining option.

Royal Caribbean cru ise ships also offer a wide variety of specialty restaurants, which do cost extra. If you’d like to try a few of these restaurants, consider purchasing the Ultimate Dining Package so you can try them all.

Family Friendly Environment

Royal Caribbean is known for having a fun, family-friendly environment. Onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, you’ll find dining options, activities, and events that cater to families with kids , teenagers , and young adults .

Royal Caribbean cruise ships tend to attract families with kids of all ages and cruisers who are young at heart. Many people love the Adventure Ocean kid’s club, which ranges from nursery to 17 years of age.

Those who cruise with Royal Caribbean as a family love this cruise line as there is something for everyone. Royal Caribbean truly is the ultimate cruise line for family vacations.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships are known for having some of the best onboard activities at sea. When you cruise with Royal Caribbean, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Since Royal Caribbean has the largest cruise ships at sea, there are multiple entertainment venues onboard. On select ships, you’ll find aqua shows at the Aqua Theater, ice skating shows at the Ice Rink, comedians, and Broadway-style shows.

The great thing about cruise with Royal Caribbean is that multiple shows happen every night. This means you will have plenty of entertainment options every night of your cruise vacation.

Kids & Teens Club

Royal Caribbean has one of the best youth programs in the cruise industry. If you’re  cruising with kids , take advantage of Adventure Ocean, Royal Caribbeans kid’s club.

The Adventure Ocean Kid’s Club is a supervised program where kids between the ages of 3 and 17 can make new friends, hang out, and participate in activities in a safe and supervised environment.

Kids and teenagers are separated by age group, and there are plenty of activities for all ages.

As someone who grew up cruising, I know first-hand how fun the kid’s clubs are on Royal Caribbean. As a kid, my parents could not get me out of the kid’s club because I enjoyed it so much!

On select Royal Caribbean cruise ships, there is a nursery for 6 to 36-month-old children. Royal Caribbean is one of the only cruise lines that offers a nursery for young children.

Why Cruisers Like MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is known for having cruise ships with stunning designs. Onboard an MSC cruise ship , you’ll find beautiful pool areas, Swarovski crystal staircases, and multiple bar and lounge areas with a modern design.

When you step onboard an MSC cruise ship, you may notice some inspiration from Royal Caribbean cruise ships. For instance, MSC World-Class cruise ships have a boardwalk area that resembles the boardwalk on Oasis-Class cruise ships.

So, if you’ve sailed with Royal Caribbean, cruising with MSC may feel somewhat familiar to you.

The MSC Seaside-Class is one of my favorite cruise ship designs at sea. These cruise ships feature a wake infinity pool area where you can swim while experiencing stunning ocean views.

Furthermore, Seaside-Class cruise ships have the Bridge of Sighs, which is a great place for taking pictures and taking in the ocean views.

MSC Cruises offers short 4-day cruises on some of their older cruise ships. This is ideal for those looking to cruise on a budget or wanting a short getaway.

Overall, MSC Cruises has amazing ship designs that are easy to navigate, family-friendly, and absolutely stunning.

MSC Cruises has an amazing private Island called Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. In fact some cruise passengers claim that Ocean Cay feels more natural and beautiful that other cruise line private islands .

Although it does not have all the attractions you would find at Perfect Day at Cococay, Ocean Cay has stunning white sand beaches and crystal blue water.

The great thing about Ocean Cay is that it’s very calm. Our cruise ship was the only one in port when we were there, meaning we had the whole island to ourselves.

This made it very easy to find a quiet spot on the beach and relax or go to a bar and order a drink. If you enjoy relaxing at the beach, you will enjoy Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Dining Options & Restaurants

MSC has a lot to offer when it comes to food and dining. However, when comparing Royal Caribbean to MSC Cruises, you’ll notice that there are more casual dining options on Royal Caribbean.

On MSC, the main dining room and large buffet are included. Several specialty restaurants are available for an enhanced dining experience at an extra charge.

Dining Room

The main dining room is open daily for breakfast and dinner, and lunch on sea days.

The buffet is open throughout the day, starting at breakfast and ending late in the evening time. There is always a wide variety of tasty food options.

You’ll find classic hot and cold dishes, cheese and charcuterie meats, burgers and fries, salads and fresh fruit. Plus, MSC has some of the best pizza at sea!

Specialty Restaurants

MSC offers a variety of specialty restaurants ranging from an American-style steakhouse to Mexican cuisine and a sushi restaurant.

Overall, the dining at MSC is very good. Although they don’t have food options all around the ship like you would find on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, you can still grab food throughout the day in the buffet.

Onboard MSC Cruises, you’ll find a family-friendly environment. With entertainment, activities, and food options geared towards families, it’s easy to have an amazing family vacation on an MSC Cruise.

The clientele onboard an MSC Cruise can vary and you’ll find couples to families. Onboard our recent MSC cruise, there were a lot of kids. However, there were many areas for the kids to play, so it kept them from going to the quieter parts of the cruise ship.

Furthermore, there is an adult-only pool area onboard MSC cruises. This is ideal for cruisers who want some peace and quiet throughout their cruise vacation.

Unique Cruise Experience

Since MSC Cruises is an Italian cruise line, the passenger demographic tends to be more European. It’s important to be aware of this, as some of the cruise passengers may not speak English.

If you’re cruising out of the United States, there will still be many American and English-speaking cruisers. However, English may be less common if you’re taking a Mediterranean or other European cruise.

Furthermore, you may notice some differences onboard an MSC cruise as they cater towards a European clientele. For instance, the hot tubs will be colder, there will be more smokers, and there will be healthier food options.

You’ll also notice more men wearing speedos on the pool deck than we typically see on American cruise lines.

Onboard Attractions & Included Activities

MSC offers a wide variety of onboard attractions and included activities. When it comes to activities and attractions on a cruise ship, MSC competes directly with Royal Caribbean.

Onboard an MSC cruise , you will find activities for all ages. These activities can range from splash pads for young children to thrill rides for adrenaline junkies!

Although Royal Caribbean offers a wider variety and higher-quality entertainment, MSC still has some great options. Onboard an MSC cruise, there are dancing and singing shows every evening in the theater, as well as comedian and other guest performances.

Throughout the cruise, there will be game shows, karaoke, and many themed parties. There is no shortage of entertainment on an MSC cruise, and there are many ways to enjoy your evening when you are onboard.

The party starts in the nightclub as it gets later in the evening. MSC has some great parties, and they can go very late into the evening (between 2 and 3 am).

MSC has a youth program for children ranging from 1 to 17 years old. There will be 5 different clubs to give each age group their own space to hang out, and activities catered for their age range.

Those who enjoy cruising as a family or with friends and enjoy a fun cruise environment. Since MSC has plenty of activities and an active nightlife, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

MSC Cruises is also great for people who enjoy experiencing and connecting with people from different cultures.

Compared to Royal Caribbean, MSC cruises are more affordable. In fact, offers MSC the best bang for your buck when it comes to a cruise vacation.

If you’re new to cruising and you want to see if you’ll like it, then cruising with MSC is a great idea. Furthermore, MSC is great for those cruising as a family and on a tighter budget.

Although Royal Caribbean does have more to do on their private island, MSC’s private island is still amazing. The beach truly is wonderful, and it is a great port to enjoy your day.

There are quite a few similarities between two massively popular cruise providers, Royal Caribbean and MSC, but there are also some key differences.

Royal Caribbean Overview

Perhaps one of the most widely recognized names in the industry, Royal Caribbean boasts a fleet of 24 of the largest cruise ships in the world. The biggest ship can carry over 5000 passengers, and its smallest ship, Rhapsody of the Seas, can hold well over 2000.

Royal Caribbean is a great choice for a romantic couples’ or honeymoon cruise. Whether you want to spend the entire trip relaxing on deck with a drink in hand, get your heart racing with adrenaline-pumping activities like zip-lining, or enjoy some pampering in the spa, the options are almost limitless. There are also plenty of itineraries and departure ports to choose from.

MSC Overview

Although European-based, MSC is still very popular in North America, particularly for its European itineraries. It is a luxury cruise operator that offers high-end, eclectic experiences at a surprisingly affordable price. 

MSC cruises are more low-key than Royal Caribbean cruises. Especially popular with families, MSC lets children ages 3-11 years old sail for free, and kids between the ages of 12-17 sail for a discounted fare. MSC’s largest ship can hold over 6000 passengers, while its smallest ship, called the MSC Armonia, can carry around 2500. 

Passengers can purchase packages, called “experiences” in MSC terms, on top of their base fare that let them customize their holiday. There are 3–Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea–and they include perks like priority dining reservations and the option to choose cabins. 

Guests can also choose a luxurious upgrade with the MSC Yacht Club, which grants members their own VIP section, private pool, dining options, free drinks, personal butler and concierge services, and priority embarkation and seating. 

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Cabins

While their cabins might not meet the same luxury standards as some other higher-end cruise lines, Royal Caribbean’s rooms are comfortable and include thoughtful add-ons. They have especially creative family rooms. Far from simple, these are more like giant playhouses that include slides, games, and Lego-inspired walls. 

Couples on Royal Caribbean can enjoy peaceful cabins with modern furnishings, large windows, and private balconies. The cruise line’s largest suites are equipped with 4 beautiful bedrooms so groups can conveniently stay together without feeling cramped. 

Meanwhile, MSC accommodations vary from basic to extraordinary, depending on what kind of experience you go for. Not all cabins have balconies, and the ones that do can sometimes come with metal railings or other obstructions that block your view of the sea. 

The nicest suites come with separate sitting areas, walk-in closets, whirlpool bathtubs, and bathrooms with their own balconies. The Duplex Suite, which is only available on the MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima, is two floors high and includes 2 bathrooms. 

There are also studio rooms for solo travelers. They are small and only come equipped with a single bed which folds into a sofa during the day to make the suite roomier.  

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Destinations and Itineraries

Both MSC and Royal Caribbean travel to popular cruise destinations in the Caribbean and Europe, the coasts of North America, South Pacific islands, and South America. 

Although Royal Caribbean sails primarily to the Caribbean and Europe–offering cruises that average from 3 to 14 nights–they sail to almost every destination you can think of. Cruises to Australia, New Zealand , and Asia skyrocket in popularity during the North American winters. 

Royal Caribbean’s longest cruise, an epic round-the-world journey, is between 250-270 nights long and stops at over 60 countries. You can also book an Ultimate World cruise and explore your favorite corner of the world in detail over 60 nights. 

MSC has a strong European fanbase, and most of its sailings are concentrated around Western and Northern Europe. However, they’ve made considerable efforts to market themselves more to North American passengers, offering year-round itineraries in the Caribbean (including their own private island in the Bahamas , the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve). 

Seasonal MSC itineraries popular with European passengers sail to parts of Africa , Asia, and the Middle East including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Their World Cruise is considerably shorter than Royal Caribbean’s but visits many of the same places. 

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Activities and Entertainment   

While you certainly can spend your days onboard relaxing, Royal Caribbean cruises are geared more toward folks who can’t sit still. Exciting activities include a surf simulator, giant rock climbing walls, sky-diving simulators, a zip-lining course, tall waterslides, a skating rink, and bumper cars .  

Royal Caribbean is one of the most family-friendly cruise operators out there, and they have plenty of activities available to keep kids and teens busy while parents enjoy a leisurely lunch or have a relaxing treatment in the full-service spa. During the evening, passengers can take in a show, try their luck at the casino, or dance at the nightclub. 

MSC has round-the-clock entertainment that rivals that of Royal Caribbean, with a few original extras thrown in like their video arcade, 4D movie theater, and innovative Diamond Bar and Library. Here you can enjoy a creative cocktail and a good book, perfect for folks who don’t like socializing in noisy nightclubs and crowded lounges. MSC ships also have a bowling alley, casino, theater for Broadway plays and musical acts, and a Formula 1 racetrack simulator. 

There is also a kids’ club and babysitting services available for no extra charge on MSC ships, which is a major perk for cruising families. MSC used to offer activities like language and cooking classes for older kids, but that’s no longer the case. 

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Dining 

Meals at some of Royal Caribbean’s restaurants are included in your cruise fare, and there are additional dining packages you can purchase if you want some variety. (Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean’s biggest drawback is not offering all-inclusive cruise fares .)

Packages range, including one with 3 onboard restaurants and an unlimited dining package, which is a pretty sweet deal especially if sailing on one of the larger vessels. Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas, has 20 different restaurants to choose from. Plus, the unlimited dining package includes lunch and you’ll score additional discounts on bottles of wine for the entirety of your cruise. 

Royal Caribbean drink packages can also be purchased but come with price limits, usually around $12-$13. If you order a more expensive drink, you’ll just pay the difference. Even if you don’t plan to drink every day, a drink package usually works out to be cheaper than paying as you go, and you can sometimes get a discount on a second drink package if you’re traveling with someone. Alternatively, you can always try to sneak your own alcohol onboard. 

MSC, on the other hand, includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner in their fare price, but only at 2 of the ship’s restaurants. Guests can choose between the buffet restaurants or the main sit-down option. Specialty restaurants and room service are available for an extra cost, and the all-inclusive fare doesn’t include drinks unless you get the Yacht Club upgrade. 

Purchasing any of the experience upgrades entitles you to discounts on the 5 available drink and specialty dining packages but only if you purchase them at the time of booking. MSC’s drink packages include alcohol-free and minor options, so unless you’re going to be drinking nothing but water on the cruise, a drinks package is definitely worth it. 

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Cost

Prices for a Royal Caribbean cruise can fluctuate greatly depending on what time of year you go, what kind of cabin you want, and how many nights you book, but you can expect to pay between $150-$250 per person per night for a cabin with an ocean view balcony. That’s not including the cost of drinks, though, so unless you purchase a package, a Royal Caribbean cruise can end up costing tens of thousands of dollars per week for a family. 

MSC has much more affordable fares and offers generous discounts on their food and beverage packages, but figuring out which package to get and whether or not experience add-ons are worth it can be confusing. Working with a cruise travel agent saves you from doing all that math and can end up saving you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on your cruise vacation. 

Royal Caribbean vs. MSC Clientele

Both Royal Caribbean and MSC cruises welcome a wide range of passengers, from couples of all ages to groups and solo travelers. They are both popular with families thanks to the kid-friendly environment, large selection of activities, and itineraries to every corner of the globe. 

While Royal Caribbean tends to have mostly American passengers, passengers onboard MSC cruises are typically European. However, MSC cruises are gaining popularity in North America, especially with budget travelers.

The main difference here is the overall vibe onboard. Royal Caribbean cruises are fast-paced, exciting, and loud, while MSC cruises are more low-key and relaxed. They don’t generally attract a party crowd. MSC cruises are far from boring but if you want a cruise experience that keeps you on your toes, Royal Caribbean might be the way to go.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: What’s the BEST Cruise for Families?

In this guide comparing MSC vs Royal Caribbean , I’ll be sharing specific comparisons between the MSC Seashore and Royal Caribbean’s Allure/Oasis of the Seas.

Booking your first family cruise can feel daunting, especially with younger kids. But cruising with kids can be stress-free and fun! Living in Florida and so close to Port Canaveral , cruising just makes sense when it comes to planning family vacations.

We’ve recently taken our 5 year old daughter on two short cruises on two separate cruise lines . I think 2-3 night cruises are a great way to introduce kids to cruising. It also gives families the opportunity to determine if cruising is right for their family. Keep reading to learn more about MSC and Royal Caribbean!

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: Cabin Sizes

The cabins on most ships are going to be very comparable. We had a balcony on both cruise lines, however, our balcony room on Royal Caribbean was interior and overlooked Central Park. The bathrooms and layout of each room were almost identical, though.

There were only slight differences, which may or may not affect everyone. For instance, on MSC our bed was further from the door and our daughter’s bed was pre-made and the length of a couch.

On Royal Caribbean , our bed was closer to the door and our daughter’s bed was a pull-out couch. Since it was a pull out couch, it did take up any extra space we had. So, we constantly had to put it away and remake it whenever needed.

Unless you’re booking a suite, you’ll want to make the most of your space in your cabin. There are several hacks and things you can pack to ensure you’re not wasting space–no matter what cruise line you book.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: Private Islands

There are some really big differences between these two private islands in the Bahamas. Depending on what you prefer will determine who you think has the superior island when it comes to MSC vs Royal Caribbean.

Perfect Day at Coco Cay

Royal Caribbean’s “Perfect Day at Coco Cay” is sure to leave families with an endless amount of fun and things to do. The island has become commercialized and basically turned into a water park.

On the island, you’ll find numerous beach spots, pools, kiddie area, and even an actual water park. While you can enjoy the pools, beach, and kiddie park and no additional cost, there is a fee to enter the water park which features numerous water rides.

Families can also book other activities like zip lining, snorkeling, wave runners, etc. We’ve found that it’s not worth it to book the snorkeling excursion. It’s more beneficial to do a snorkel at a separate port like Nassau or Grand Turk. You can also pack your own goggles or rent some on the island.

MSC’s Ocean Cay is very much different. You won’t find a single pool or kid’s area on this island. Instead you can simply enjoy the beach and ocean.

At Ocean Cay, families can still book snorkeling or wave runners. You’ll need to walk or take a shuttle to other parts of the island, though. The beach located near the dock quickly fills up and beach chairs are hard to find.

On both islands you’ll be able to enjoy complimentary food, much like what’s offered at the buffet on each ship. On Ocean Cay, there are additional food trucks that may require an additional fee. Both islands also feature many local shops that will also require cash or a separate card.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: On Board Activities

When it comes to on board activities, you’ll find that most ships have an arcade, pool, mini golf, basketball and kid’s club. However, there are some stark differences when it comes to the MSC Seashore vs the Royal Caribbean Allure/Oasis of the Seas.

On Royal Caribbean , the Allure/Oasis of the Seas both have a carousel, zip line, rock wall and even an ice skating ring for guests to enjoy at select times. Both ships also have a flow rider, which is great for older kids. The Allure has a small kids water area, much like a splash pad, while the Oasis does have multiple water slides to enjoy.

While the MSC Seashore doesn’t have many non-water activities to enjoy, I do think it has one of the best water areas for kids. The area is pirate themed and complete with a ropes obstacle course, mini pool, and several water slides. One of the slides does require children to be at least 7 years old. On MSC, everyone is required to sign a waiver and receive a wrist band prior to riding any waterslides.

Each cruise line is also going to have their own activities planned throughout the cruise like bingo, a belly flop contest, face painting and more. In addition, cruisers have started their own activity by hiding ducks on board for anyone to find. I did think that it was easier and more common to find ducks on our Royal Caribbean cruise than our MSC cruise.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: The Food

I have to admit, when it comes to food Royal Caribbean blows MSC out of the water. Though, you shouldn’t ever book any cruise because of food. Typically cruise food is all comparable.

Every cruise will have additional dining options that you can pay extra for–they typically serve better food. Most of the time, you’ll need to make reservations ahead of your cruise date as they fill quickly.

Both have relatively similar buffets, though Royal Caribbean seems to have a better layout and labeled stations, whereas MSC is just one line.

For the main dining, you’ll find that most cruise lines allow you to order multiple entrees. This is true for Royal Caribbean . However, on MSC you’ll have to pay an additional fee if you want more than one entree. They will let you order multiple appetizers or desserts though.

Both cruise lines will allow you to bring your own snacks on board. Royal Caribbean will even allow you to bring some bottled water or soda, too. I would recommend bringing a tumbler though, so you can easily fill up at water stations.

MSC vs Royal Caribbean: Other Key Differences

There are a few other things to consider when comparing MSC vs Royal Caribbean . There are certainly major differences regarding boarding, service, app usage, and more.

Embarkation

Upon checking in for your cruise (typically within 30 days of your departure), you’ll receive a specific time frame in which you can arrive to your port and board the ship.

On Royal Caribbean , we’ve always breezed right through security and boarded the ship with no problems or waiting time.

However, on MSC , we experienced long lines and wait times. From other research, this is a frequent occurrence and not just a one time thing we experienced. People were still getting off the ship, which caused major delays for everyone boarding. In total, I think it took about 80 minutes for us to board the MSC Seashore.

You’ll want to download your cruise line’s app to your phone. This is where you can keep track of purchases, see your itinerary, and more. It’s also a way for you to message others on the ship without using data or purchasing additional wifi.

The Royal Caribbean app seemed much more advanced in my opinion. Guests are able to book shows, see a full list of activities, and more. Guests are also able to see most of the on board itinerary ahead of time unlike MSC where you’re unable to see shows until you’re on board the ship. On MSC , most of your daily activities will be printed on paper and delivered to your cabin daily for you to view.

A great thing about MSC Cruises is that they offer a best value rate which includes wifi and the easy plus drinks package (soda, beer, select cocktails, etc). It’s also still very affordable.

While Royal Caribbean is going to cost a few hundred more, they do offer a wide array of onboard activities and entertainment. Generally, you’ll also experience better food and service, too.

Overall Experience

Overall, if we solely based our cruise decision on the kid’s waterpark we would book the MSC Seashore 1000%. MSC also offers 2 night cruises, which I think are perfect for testing the waters with cruising with kids .

If you want to ensure you have the best first-time overall cruise experience, then I would go with Royal Caribbean .

No matter what cruise line you decide to book, I think it’s important to have realistic expectations. It’s always a great idea to join Facebook cruise groups, watch YouTube reviews, and more.

We enjoyed both Royal Caribbean and MSC for various reasons. So, I think it’s important to determine why you’re cruising–do you like the all-inclusivity of it all, the experience, the drink packages, etc?

11 Important Differences Between MSC Cruises and Other Major Lines

MSC Cruises may not be huge in North America just yet, but that’s quickly changing. While the big three cruise lines — Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean — may get most of the headlines, MSC is actually just as large and even larger than some of those names.

Seemingly until the past few years, however, MSC hasn’t focused as heavily on the United States. That definitely isn’t the case going forward. Today, it offers cruises from Miami, Port Canaveral and New York, with more homeports on the way.

As well, the line is expanding its fleet. It made a mark with the introduction of the MSC Seaside in the U.S., followed by MSC Seascape more recently, but that’s just the start. The line currently boasts the largest cruise ship in the world outside of Royal Caribbean with its MSC World Europa. That will be joined by MSC World America in 2025.

In other words, if you haven’t been tempted by an MSC cruise yet, it could be a different story in the near future.

Having recently sailed on MSC, as well as sailing the other major cruise lines regularly, we can tell you that there are some major differences between this line and its competitors.

Differences Between MSC and Other Major Cruise Lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Etc.)

MSC Is Less Expensive Than Most Lines If you’re searching for a cruise aboard MSC, the first thing you are likely to notice is the price of your trip. We’ve priced thousands of cruises over the year and MSC offers many of the cheapest trips we’ve seen; often times even less than Carnival, which is known as a budget-friendly line.

For example, a week cruise aboard the MSC Seascape (a relatively new ship) from Miami in July 2024 can be had starting for just $749 per person.

Comparable trips during that time run more than $900 aboard Carnival Celebration sailing from Miami. Sailings on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas for a week in July from Miami start at $2,207. 

MSC doesn’t have a lock on cruise deals, but it does offer a lot of affordable choices. Rates are even less expensive if sailing outside of summer or holidays.

Fewer Included Restaurants Like other cruise lines, MSC also has a mix of included restaurants and specialty restaurants where you will pay extra to dine. 

What’s different with MSC is that the amount of included restaurants — and the number of restaurants in particular — are sparse. 

This isn’t every ship, but on those we’ve sailed, only the buffet and main dining room have been available with the cruise fare. All other restaurants (of which there were only a handful) cost more.

Compare that to a line like Carnival that includes spots like Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana, and more restaurants with the cruise fare.

Ocean Cay (MSC’s Private Island) While all the major cruise lines have their own private islands, only MSC has Ocean Cay. Just 65 miles from Miami, MSC poured $300 million into converting the island from a former sand excavation site into a tropical paradise. It’s a must-see. What makes it so special are the beaches and water. It features multiple massive beaches, giving plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. In addition, the water is an electric blue that’s some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen.

While some cruise lines have created wild island that almost look like a cartoon with all the attractions, Ocean Cay is more subdued, with more space, and fewer visitors each day. If you’re wanting a relaxing beach day, this is it. 

Not as Tech Savvy There’s no doubt that technology has come a long way in cruising. These days you can do everything online from checking in to buying excursions to navigating the ship via the cruise line app.

And while MSC has come a long way in the past few years regarding integrating technology into cruising, it still has some room to improve.

For instance, when we checked online prior to the cruise, we encountered numerous errors trying to do basic things like add a credit card to the account. Anytime we did make a change or added information, it would automatically send out an entirely new booking confirmation to our email.

Lower Gratuity (Service Charge) Amounts Of all the major cruise lines, MSC has the lowest automatic service charges of any line we’ve seen. Over the past several years gratuity amounts — the daily charges that go to people like your room steward and the dining staff — have crept up among most cruise lines.

These days it’s usual to pay $16 per person, per day for these charges. Book a suite, and the charge is usually higher — closer to $20 per day. Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, charges $25 per day for people in suites and $20 per person, per day, for other rooms. 

MSC charges a relatively low $14.00 per person , per day for passengers that are 12 years and older. Kids aged 2-11 are charged just $7.00 per night (typically kids are charged full price on other lines).

Room Stewards In our experience with MSC, the room stewards are much less noticeable than what you’ll find on other cruise lines.

We’re used to meeting the room steward on the first day of the cruise, and then seeing them regularly each day coming to and from the room. On MSC, we only spotted him a time or two during the cruise.

Even so, our room was regularly cleaned. In fact, we actually prefer not having to constantly bump into a room steward and make small talk on our way in and out of the cabin.

Evening Entertainment on the Ship In a world where cruise lines are pushing the envelope everywhere to make your experience bigger and better, MSC is decidedly old-school in some respects — like your evening entertainment.

Most cruise lines seem to be pushing toward full-scale production shows. Norwegian Cruise Lines, for example has productions of Footloose and Kinky Boots on some of its newer ships. Royal Caribbean offers big budget programs and even aqua shows on its Oasis-class ships.

In comparison, MSC is different. A handful of ships feature Carousel Productions at Sea (similar to Cirque du Soleil), but not all. In our experience, the entertainment is more of things like a “variety show” featuring singing, dancing, and acrobatics. For instance, one cruise had a new take on Peter Pan that included contortionists, circus acts, and a juggler. Another show was a dedication to Michael Jackson, complete with an impersonator and full dance numbers.

Frankly, the talent level on these programs has been amazing, and the shows have been a big hit. However, they’ve struck us as a big departure from what we’ve seen on other lines.

Pizza For pizza to be pointed out as a difference with other cruise lines, you know the pie on MSC must be pretty good.

We’re big fans of “good” pizza. What we’ve found, however, is that these dishes usually aren’t that great on many cruises. Frankly, the pizza on many ships is usually a bit bland and has a cardboard taste that you’d find at a cheap buffet.

Maybe it’s because MSC has roots in Italy, but they take their pizza seriously. It’s on par with anything you’d find at a popular pizza joint (and much better than chain restaurants). Best of all, it’s free at the buffet. You can also get an entire pie made to order and delivered to your cabin for $6-$10.

Drink Package Options Most cruise lines have a single drink package… or maybe a regular package and a high-end package. Meanwhile, they all have one thing in common — they are pricey. Most drink packages start around $60 per day and go up from there.

MSC does things a bit differently, offering three different options:

• Premium Extra

What’s the difference? Each package gives you drink options up to a certain dollar amount. The Easy package offers drinks up to $8 each, the Easy Plus package offers up to $10 each, and the Premium Extra gives you any drink up to $16 per glass.

Prices run from about $50-$90 per person, per day if booked ahead of time. This gives you a cheaper option than you’ll find on most other cruise lines with the Easy package. 

Linking a Credit Card to Your Account One difference between MSC and other cruise lines definitely struck us as odd, and that’s how you attach payment to your onboard account.

Every cruise line we’ve been on always asks for a credit card at check-in. It is scanned and linked to your account. At the end of the trip, your card is automatically charged after you leave.

In our cruise with MSC, passengers completed this process themselves — either online ahead of time or once actually on the ship. Several terminals are set up around the ship where you will insert the credit card you use for payment to link to your onboard account.

It’s on you to make sure your account is all squared away with a payment method. If you forget then you’ll have to go see Guest Services to settle your bill before you are allowed to leave the ship.

Be Prepared for Lots of Waivers If you sail MSC, then be prepared to sign waivers for things you don’t have to on other cruise lines.

Should you do some of the more extreme things on other cruises, it’s likely you have to sign something. For instance, the Flowrider surf simulator on Royal Caribbean requires you to complete a form before you can enjoy.

MSC takes it to another level. On the cruise line if you want to lift weights or run on the treadmill in the gym, you’ll need to sign a waiver. Want to ride one of the waterslides? Yes, there is a form to complete before you can do so.

Not Completely Different Than Other Lines (Tons That’s Familiar) 

We don’t want to give the impression that MSC is an absolutely unfamiliar experience or completely different than sailing any other line. If you’ve sailed a cruise before, there’s a lot that you’ll know and love.  

Want to sit on the pool deck, sip a cold drink and soak up the sun? There’s plenty of that. How about dinner in the dining room followed by an impressive show in the theater? Sure, that’s there too. And what about a little late-night gambling in the casino? Of course.

However, it’s the details surrounding life onboard that might stand out if you’re used to some of the other lines in U.S. cruising.

We have been on three great cruises with Royal Caribbean. Next summer we consider trying MSC Cruises, mostly because they are cheaper than Royal Caribbean. But I am nervous about MSC Cruises not being as good as a Royal Caribbean cruises. When I look at cruisecritic.com it says 77% Loved It with Royal Caribbean, and only 55% Loved It with MSC Cruises.

What is the big different between MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean? And should I be nervous for booking with MSC Cruises when I am used to Royal Caribbean?

Next summer our cruise will be in Europe, and the group will consist of two at the age of 50 and four at the age of 18-20.

We are in "the same boat" as you in that we've been on 3 RC cruises and are now trying MSC in just a couple of weeks! We have a small group of us going out of Barcelona on Fantasia as we needed a 7-day itinerary to allow for other fun time in Europe. Didn't like RC's 7-day offering personally.

I'll try to report back with a better comparison. So far what I'm seeing is that while the pricing appears WAY cheaper over RC, MSC seems to not include as much (i.e. coffees, etc.) so you have to spend on drink packages. Still a great deal in my opinion, but takes away from that "all-inclusive" feeling that I have enjoyed in the past. It's been awhile though, so it may just be the way it is with all the cruise lines these days...

We were on Preziosa in August. We paid£154 each for the drinks package for the week and was well worth it. It included coffee ice cream and bottled water as well as the usual beer, wine by the glass, spirits and cocktails. Our average daily bar tab was about. £100 so we saved about £400. Wedding spend £100 per day on alcohol by the way!! I our opinion the package was more than worth it.

I am presuming that you are from the U.S since you have been on a number of RCL cruises. We sailed on MSC for the first time in April 2015 on the Divina out of Miami. Here are my observations:

1/ Boarding was a "hot mess". Luckily, we arrived at the port early, received an early assignment number and were called to board early. Other folks were left in a hot, crowded, disorganized mass of unhappy cruisers.

2/ We booked an oceanview cabin, which was very roomy and nicely appointed. One issue was cabin servicing. Ours was fine, but friends we traveled with were not happy. The cabin steward was a "ghost". Never saw him and room was not serviced until late afternoon. Even though they asked for ice to be serviced, it never happened. He did not receive the "extra" tip our friends usually provide.

3/ Food was good, although not what an American cruise line provides. Smaller portions, mostly Italian cuisine (had NO problem with that!) and the buffet is not "user friendly" (very large and no continuity). However, the pizza was sublime!!

4/ On MSC the drink prices and wine bottle prices are reasonable. They have good package prices on their website. I encourage you to use them. We are diamond with RCL and Elite with Celebrity, but feel their onboard drink prices are excessive. This from someone who lives 30 minutes away from NYC!!

5/ There were lots of teens, 20's and 30''s on our cruise and they were having a GREAT time! Lot's of good music, fun pool games, etc. They will not be bored.

6/ MSC does not try to be RCL or CCL and will still provide you with a very good vacation experience. Be open to a more "Continental" experience and hopefully, you can just go with the flow.

We are also planning on booking the Divina for our summer family Caribbean cruise. We usually alternate between Carnival, NCL, and Royal but the prices on the Divina look very intriguing. We are just not convinced 100% yet due to some of the reviews.

I was on 4 MSC cruises, this year we sailed with the biggest on the world Royal-Allure of the seas. Altough I must say, that Allure is truly remarkable ship and you have everything (really anything :D) on it to do, I missed MSC experience...I love everything about MSC and I would definitely sail with them again (shortly:D). You will enjoy it, just go open minded and do not bother with negative comments about this cruise line..have fun:D

Having just got off MSC Musica from Venice and previously cruised Royal C. from Barcelona, I'd say you have to weigh why you're cruising.

We cruised MSC because the port stops we wanted in Greece were far superior to Royal's offering. Royal had two days at sea while MSC had none. I'd rather got on a 3 hour tour of Montenegro than have a day at sea.

That being said -- if you want better service and food -- Royal is the way to go. MSC is sadly lacking in that department.

The 7 classes of Royal Caribbean cruise ships, explained

Even if you're a newcomer to cruising, you've probably heard of Royal Caribbean 's giant Icon Class and Oasis Class ships. With the exception of a single MSC Cruises vessel , they're far bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat and like nothing else you'll find at sea.

Indeed, when you hear people talking about the wow factor of Royal Caribbean's "floating megaresorts," it's likely they're referring to the seven ships in these two sets of vessels. This includes the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas — the world's biggest cruise ship.

That said, not all Royal Caribbean ships are similarly supersized. While the line is perhaps best known for giant vessels — it operates seven of the 10 biggest cruise ships in the world — it also markets some relatively smaller, more intimate ships.

In fact, Royal Caribbean has eight vessels that are less than half the size of the Icon Class and Oasis Class ships.

If you're thinking about booking a Royal Caribbean cruise, you'll find the line offers a wide range of ship styles and designs.

With the relatively recent removal of two older ships from its fleet, Royal Caribbean — the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity — now has 28 oceangoing vessels in all. That's more than any other major cruise line, and it means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect Royal Caribbean ship for you.

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options is that the 28 ships can easily be bunched into just seven groups of vessels that have similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

These seven groups are made up of ships constructed around the same time with the same basic design. They're known in cruise industry lingo as "classes," and each has its own look and feel.

An introduction to Royal Caribbean ships

For the most part, Royal Caribbean operates big, bustling megaships that will appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining (some vessels have more than 20 distinct places to grab a bite) or entertainment. Its vessels are lively and fun.

The over-the-top megaresort experience on a Royal Caribbean ship varies from class to class, though.

The line's one Icon Class and six Oasis Class ships are unlike anything else you'll find at sea when it comes to size, amenities and capacity. They each can hold more than 6,600 passengers, with every berth full.

Somewhat smaller in size but still giant by any measure, each of the line's five Quantum Class and three Freedom Class vessels has a total capacity ranging from around 4,500 to 5,600 passengers. With space for around 3,800 passengers at maximum occupancy, the line's five Voyager Class vessels are relatively large, too.

Together, the 20 vessels of these five classes — Icon, Oasis, Quantum, Freedom and Voyager — make up Royal Caribbean's big-ship fleet. The line's remaining eight vessels, split among two classes, are smaller, with maximum occupancy topping out at around 2,500 passengers.

While no longer the focus at Royal Caribbean, the smaller ships (which are generally the line's older ships) allow it to offer itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

The smaller ships also appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail per day.

As you might expect, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships have the most amenities. With each step down in size, you'll find fewer restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and attractions. Even the smallest Royal Caribbean ships still have quite a bit to offer, though.

If you're sailing with the line for the first time, it's important to understand that not all of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions and venues are present on all its ships. For instance, while every Royal Caribbean vessel now has one of the line's iconic climbing walls (some have two), only the 20 ships of the line's big-ship classes have a FlowRider surfing simulator. Only the 15 ships of the Icon, Oasis, Freedom and Voyager classes have ice skating rinks.

Here is a look at the seven classes of Royal Caribbean ships in more detail.

Ships in class: Icon of the Seas (2024), Star of the Seas (coming in 2025); unnamed vessel (coming in 2026)

Size: 248,663 tons

Is your idea of a great vacation a trip to a megaresort loaded with more restaurants, bars, theaters and watery amusements than you can imagine? Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class is the ship class for you.

As mentioned above, Icon of the Seas — the only Icon Class ship currently in operation — is bigger than any other cruise vessel afloat at 248,663 tons, and for big-ship lovers, there's really nothing quite like it. Two additional Icon Class ships debuting in 2025 and 2026, respectively, will be equally over-the-top in size and venues.

Each of the Icon Class vessels that are operating or soon to debut has been designed with seven separate pools (a new record for a cruise ship), a water park with six waterslides (also a record), a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks.

Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks, just in case you want to get your Michelle Kwan on.

What you won't find on the Icon Class ships is intimacy. These are vessels that can carry as many as 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,300 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with nearly 10,000 people.

If the above sounds downright outrageous to you, it is. Keep in mind, though, that the biggest megaresorts on land are even bigger. The biggest resort in the U.S. — The Venetian in Las Vegas — has 7,092 rooms. That means it can hold more than 14,000 guests, assuming there are two people per room.

By that measure, Icon Class ships are almost small.

Icon Class ships also don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean's designers are masters at creating vessels that can carry thousands and thousands of people but still feel relatively uncrowded — at least in some areas. You can have a quiet afternoon reading a book on a bench in the sometimes nearly empty, tree-lined Central Park area of Icon of the Seas while, just a few decks above, thousands of vacationers are frolicking about at the ship's pools.

While only one ship in this series (Icon of the Seas) is currently operating, the second vessel in the series (Star of the Seas) is already open for bookings. Its maiden voyage is set for Aug. 31, 2025.

Quantum Class

Ships in class: Quantum of the Seas (2014), Anthem of the Seas (2015), Ovation of the Seas (2016), Spectrum of the Seas (2019) and Odyssey of the Seas (2021)

Size: 168,666 to 169,379 tons

Unveiled in 2014, the Quantum Class may be Royal Caribbean's most innovative class ever.

In addition to a wide range of restaurants, bars and showrooms, the five ships in the class feature some of the most unusual new attractions you'll find at sea. This includes bumper car pavilions (yes, somehow they found room for these) and skydiving simulators.

The ships also have glass-enclosed capsules mounted on mechanical arms that will take you soaring into the sky for bird's-eye views. They're called the North Star rides, and they may be the oddest attractions ever added to the top of a cruise ship.

Quantum Class ships also feature unusual, multilevel entertainment spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass walls called Two70. The spaces are home to innovative shows that often feature aerial performers, singers and dancers who emerge from openings in the floor or the ceiling. At certain times of the day, the glass walls transform into an expansive ambient surface called Vistarama that projects real and imagined scenes.

All the above come in addition to many of the core Royal Caribbean attractions you'll find on most of the brand's ships, including pools, rock climbing walls, casinos, spas and Broadway-style shows. But don't expect all the classic Royal Caribbean features on Quantum Class ships. For instance, you won't find ice skating rinks on the vessels even though they're a staple of all other big Royal Caribbean ships. Quantum Class ships also don't have water parks.

The Quantum Class ships aren't quite as big as Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels (and thus don't have quite as much room for things like ice skating rinks). At around 169,000 tons, though, they're still among the biggest ships at sea, with a significant number of venues.

They also can carry a lot of people. Most of the ships in the class hold 4,180 passengers at double occupancy — 4,905 if every berth is filled. One exception is Spectrum of the Seas, which was specifically built for the China market with some design differences. It can hold up to 5,622 passengers. Additionally, the newest ship in the series, Odyssey of the Seas, can hold up to 5,498 passengers.

One more big difference between the ships of the Quantum Class and other big Royal Caribbean ships: The Quantum Class ships are designed to be more versatile.

If you look closely at their deck plans, you'll notice that more of their main attractions are indoors and protected from the elements than the ships of the Icon, Oasis or Freedom classes, for example.

One of the two main pool areas on each Quantum Class ship (except Odyssey of the Seas) is enclosed. The bumper car pavilions are, too, doubling as roller skating rinks or indoor basketball courts. This allows Royal Caribbean to send the ships to cooler regions of the world, such as Alaska and Northern Europe, where the temperatures aren't always conducive to outdoor activity.

Royal Caribbean has also used some Quantum Class ships for sailings out of China.

Oasis Class

Ships in class: Oasis of the Seas (2009), Allure of the Seas (2010), Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018), Wonder of the Seas (2022) and Utopia of the Seas (2024)

Size: 226,838 to 236,857 tons

Until this year's debut of Icon of the Seas, these were the world's biggest and most venue-packed cruise ships. Although they're not quite as big as the new vessel, they remain among the very best options for vacationers who love nothing more than a big, bustling resort with every sort of amusement known to humans.

Each of the Oasis Class vessels has three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and a zip line on their top decks — a nearly as wide array of features as the new Icon of the Seas. Inside the vessels, as on Icon of the Seas, you'll find a seemingly endless number of lounges, bars, restaurants and shops, as well as large casinos, spas and showrooms. Like Icon of the Seas, each ship has an indoor ice skating rink.

As is the case for Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ships, which have many similarities with the Oasis Class ships, these vessels carry a huge number of people. They can carry as many as 6,988 passengers when every berth is filled. They operate with around 2,200 crew members. That means you could be sharing your vacation with more than 9,000 people — not quite as many as the nearly 10,000 you could find on an Icon Class ship but still a huge number.

The good news for those of you worried about excessive crowds is that, as is the case with the Icon Class ships, the Oasis Class ships don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean designed them with a "neighborhood" concept that spreads passengers out in seven or eight (depending on the ship) distinct areas, such as the Pool and Sports Zone and the Boardwalk amusement zone. A lot of thought went into how passengers move between these neighborhoods, too.

Note that there are a few differences from ship to ship in the Oasis Class series. For starters, the four newest and largest ships in the series — Utopia of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas — have a few additional attractions and venues. Among them is the Ultimate Abyss, a terrifying slide that drops nine decks. (Royal Caribbean says it drops 10 decks, but don't be fooled; the line counts a nonexistent Deck 13.)

There are also giant waterslides on five of the six ships. Only Allure of the Seas is missing them. There are plans to add waterslides to Allure of the Seas, but they were put on hold after COVID-19 shut down cruising in 2020.

A handful of restaurants also differ from ship to ship in the series.

The two newest and largest ships in the series, Utopia of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, have the most differences from the other Oasis Class vessels. At 236,473 tons and 235,600 tons, respectively, they are about 4% bigger than the next biggest ship in the series; the extra space is devoted to such additions as a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, a restaurant and a sun deck.

A seventh, as-yet-unnamed ship in the Oasis Class series is under construction and expected to debut in 2028. It's being built by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France — the same shipyard that built Utopia of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas.

Radiance Class

Ships in class: Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003) and Jewel of the Seas (2004)

Size: 90,090 tons

Not sure you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? The Radiance Class ships may be the perfect solution.

At 90,090 tons, the four vessels in the series are less than half the size of Royal Caribbean's massive Icon Class and Oasis Class ships, but still big enough that they have a lot to offer.

Each vessel has more than a half-dozen places to eat, including the main restaurant, a casual buffet, a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant and an Asian venue.

You'll also find three pools on each ship, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Each ship has a theater, a spa, a casino, and multiple bars and lounges.

What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions — such as ice skating rinks, surfing simulators, giant waterslides and bumper car pavilions — that Royal Caribbean has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Radiance class probably isn't for you.

Each Radiance Class ship holds more than 2,100 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships offer.

Freedom Class

Ships in class: Freedom of the Seas (2006), Liberty of the Seas (2007) and Independence of the Seas (2008)

Size: 154,407 to 156,271 tons

As recently as 2009, these were the biggest cruise ships in the world, and they're still quite big compared to almost all other cruise vessels afloat.

While no longer on the list of the top 25 biggest cruise ships — they've been displaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon, Oasis and Quantum Class vessels, as well as several ships from other lines — the Freedom Class vessels offer a classic big-ship experience with lots of restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top attractions.

The Freedom Class ships, notably, were the first Royal Caribbean ships to feature a FlowRider surfing simulator on their top decks — now a signature attraction for the line. The vessels also have multiple pool areas, a water park, a miniature golf course and a rock climbing wall on their top decks (which are among the most activity-packed at sea).

Indeed, the top decks of Freedom Class ships are more loaded with attractions than any other Royal Caribbean vessels except the Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels. You just won't find several of the most over-the-top attractions, such as zip lines, that Icon Class and Oasis Class ships have.

In their interiors, Freedom Class vessels have the mall-like Royal Promenade spaces filled with eateries, bars and shops that have become standard on bigger Royal Caribbean ships. They also have large casinos and spas.

At around 156,000 tons, the Freedom Class ships are about 38% smaller than the Icon Class ships and 31% smaller than the Oasis Class ships, a significant step down in size. They're nearly 8% smaller than the Quantum Class ships.

They also carry significantly fewer passengers than the Oasis Class ships. Freedom of the Seas and Independence of the Seas carry about 3,900 passengers at double occupancy (closer to 4,600 with every berth filled). Liberty of the Seas can carry several hundred more.

Voyager Class

Ships in class: Voyager of the Seas (1999), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Navigator of the Seas (2002) and Mariner of the Seas (2003)

Size: 137,276 to 139,999 tons

The Voyager Class ships are similar to Freedom Class ships but shorter in length. In other words, the Freedom Class was a stretched version of the Voyager Class.

Like the Freedom Class vessels, the Voyager Class ships have many of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions, including rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks. In fact, the ships were the first at Royal Caribbean to have those attractions.

Voyager Class ships were also the first to feature a Royal Promenade with bars, cafes and shops in their interior. Each also has several specialty restaurants in addition to the main dining room and casual buffet; specialty restaurants include a version of Royal Caribbean's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and an Italian restaurant.

One of the main differences between the Voyager Class and the Freedom Class is that the Royal Promenades on Voyager Class ships are shorter. The top-deck areas of the Voyager Class ships are also more truncated than the Freedom Class vessels.

There are also fewer cabins on the Voyager Class ships, resulting in fewer passengers on board a typical sailing. Most of the ships carry around 3,100 passengers at double occupancy — about 800 fewer than the typical Freedom Class ship.

At around 139,000 tons, the ships are about 11% smaller than the Freedom Class ships.

There are also some variations in attractions among the five Voyager Class vessels. Navigator of the Seas has a relatively new waterslide zone that's home to The Blaster, the longest waterslide at sea . You won't find that on the other ships, though most of them have different waterslides. Only three of the five ships — Voyager of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas — have laser tag courses. Adventure of the Seas is the only vessel in the class with a kiddie splash zone.

Vision Class

Ships in class: Grandeur of the Seas (1996), Rhapsody of the Seas (1997), Enchantment of the Seas (1997) and Vision of the Seas (1998)

Size: 73,817 to 82,910 tons

Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels.

In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship as well as those who care more about the destinations they visit than the onboard attractions.

Along those lines, Royal Caribbean often sends some of its Vision Class ships to Europe in the summer to operate port call-intensive itineraries. The vessels also often sail longer trips in the Caribbean that include less-visited southerly islands. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience.

Vision Class ships are also sometimes based in secondary ports such as Baltimore or San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the size of the local cruise market might not warrant a larger vessel.

Except for rock climbing walls, the Vision Class ships have none of the signature Royal Caribbean deck-top attractions such as surfing and skydiving simulators. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s. All have at least two pools and six whirlpools, except for Enchantment of the Seas, which has three pools and six whirlpools.

In addition to main restaurants and casual buffets, each ship has at least one (and often several) additional specialty restaurants. The line's signature Chops Grille steakhouse and Italian eatery Giovanni's Table are two of them. Rhapsody of the Seas has the biggest selection of dining; Enchantment of the Seas has the smallest. Three of the four vessels — all but Enchantment of the Seas — have an Izumi Asian restaurant.

Each of the ships varies slightly in size. Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest of the four vessels, measuring around 74,000 tons. Enchantment of the Seas is the biggest, measuring around 83,000 tons (it was, notably, lengthened by 73 feet in 2005).

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

• Small ships are more like quaint towns, with easier navigation and more personalized service.
• Large ships offer a wide range of eateries, bars and entertainment.

The right ship comes down to the type of vacation experience you want.

I took two cruises in July, and they couldn’t have been more different.

After spending 10 days on Seabourn Pursuit, the cruise line’s 264-guest expedition vessel, I returned home for a few days before boarding Royal Caribbean International’s Utopia of the Seas , which can accommodate over 20 times that.

Cruise ships range in size from yacht-like vessels to mega-ships that are more like floating resorts. And as much as cruises may be about the ports they visit, the ship you pick can shape the destination you can access and ultimately, the kind of trip you have. Here’s how they differ and how to know which is right for you.

What are small-ship cruises like?

If mega-ships can feel like cities at sea, small ships are perhaps more like quaint towns. It’s easier to find your way around, faces become familiar quickly and the server at the nearby eatery knows how you like your eggs.

“The service is just 100% going to be much more intense than any other type of sailing,” said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. The majority of cruise lines sailing ships with capacities in the 200 to 700 range are luxury brands that already put a premium on service – though that can vary by operator – but there are practical reasons too.

Many of those ships have higher crew-to-guest ratios, making it easier to give customers a personalized experience. “We want people to feel that it’s (a) yacht-like atmosphere,” Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn, told USA TODAY on board.

Small-ship cruises generally bundle more in their fares than those on larger vessels, from food to drinks like wine and spirits, select excursions and more. Some inclusions can be particularly extravagant.

On Seabourn, for example, guests can order caviar for delivery any time of day at no additional cost (I had to try it out for research purposes during an expedition through Western Australia’s Kimberley region ).

That doesn’t necessarily mean the price tags will be higher, though. While the upfront fare may cost more, by the time guests add up drink packages , specialty dining, Wi-Fi and other extras that are typically charged separately on large mainstream ships, their expenses may not be so different.

“Don't worry about what you're paying when you go on,” Kuther said. “It's what you pay when you come off.”

If the prospect of thousands of cabins and fellow guests seems overwhelming, a small ship can also offer a more manageable experience. Lines and crowds are a relative rarity and there’s less chance of getting lost trying to find your room (a situation I’ve encountered more than once on large ships).

Getting on and off is easier, Kuther added, with the vessels often docking closer to the city center or in ports that can’t accommodate larger vessels. They also stay overnight more frequently, relieving the pressure of packing sightseeing into a shorter window.

“That is amazing because if you've ever gotten off of a mega-ship tendering into Santorini, it's like the most insane thing,” she said. “Like, you're fighting for your life to get into the funicular. So, it’s definitely an elevated experience.”

While many are well-appointed, they do have a more limited number of amenities and dining options. On an Aurora Expeditions Antarctica cruise in December, the Sylvia Earle ship had only two restaurants. I enjoyed the food and some offerings rotated, but by the end of the 11-day trip I was ready to change it up.

Travelers with children may find the ships lacking in kid-friendly activities, too.

What are big-ship cruises like?

By contrast, guests on big ships are spoiled for choice. “You can't beat the variety if that's what you're looking for,” said Kuther.

Larger ships offer a wide range of eateries, bars and entertainment. Carnival Cruise Line’s Jubilee ship, for example, has more than 20 dining options, from Guy’s Burger Joint to tacos and burritos at BlueIguana Cantina and Coastal Slice pizza – not to mention the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster , a water park, and Loft 19, a quieter retreat at the top of the vessel.

Those kinds of ships can be particularly well-suited to families or large groups who want options. Royal Caribbean divided its Oasis Class – and later Icon Class – into neighborhoods with that in mind.

“Everyone has got something to do and are excited to do during the day … And then in the evening, everybody can come together in one of I don’t know how many restaurants and have a great family meal or a date night or just a burger, and then they have a fantastic show,” president and CEO Michael Bayley said in a media briefing on board Utopia.

Large ships have more to offer passengers “who really want to party” as well, Kuther noted.

The scale also allows cruise lines to create more immersive experiences. On Utopia, the second-largest cruise ship in the world , I had dinner outside one night at the Chops Grille steakhouse in the vessel’s Central Park neighborhood. With a breeze blowing through the open-air walkway and the sound of crickets in the background – which the cruise line pipes in – I could’ve been convinced I wasn’t on a ship. 

Guests are less likely to feel the movement of the waves at that size, which also can be helpful for passengers who are fearful of water or prone to seasickness , Kuther said.

A number of cruise lines have ship-within-a-ship concepts , too, that allow guests to escape the crowds in exclusive accommodations, restaurants and sun decks, while still having access to the wider range of onboard offerings (though some offer a greater degree of separation than others).

It’s worth noting, however, that “small” and “big” are relative terms, and many mainstream cruise lines operate ships in the 1,500-to-2,500-passenger range. Those can offer a kind of middle ground, with a more intimate experience often at a lower price point (though Kuther noted that’s partly because those ships tend to be older).

Still, the overall experience of a bigger ship may cause sensory overload for some travelers.

Which is right for me?

• If you’re looking for adventure on an expedition or want to be pampered on a quiet, lower-key vessel, small ships are the way to go.
• If you want lots of things to do, places to eat and ways to party, consider a bigger ship . But there’s sure to be one that suits you.

As Kuther put it, “(If) people say they don't like cruising, I will always 100% say, ‘You just weren't on the right cruise.’”
