PM Modi In Karnataka HIGHLIGHTS: PM Inaugurates Hospital, Whitefield Metro Line In His 7th Visit To Poll-Bound State

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Karnataka for the 7th time in this year on Saturday. PM Modi will reach Karnataka on March 25 to take part in various programmes, including inaugurations of government projects and for attending a public rally in the poll-bound state, at Chikkaballapur and Davangere.

On Saturday, PM will land at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru. Then he will fly to Chikkaballapur for the inauguration of Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

Later, PM will fly to Bengaluru on Saturday afternoon for the inauguration of Whitefield Metro Line. PM Modi is also expected to take a ride in the newly to be launched metro train.

PM will also address a public meeting in Davangere after the inauguration. This will be the first address of PM Modi after the works for the Assembly polls began in Karnataka. Overall, 10 lakh people are expected to attend the rally of which 3 lakh people will be from Davangere district alone, said Davangere BJP MP GM Siddeshwar, as per PTI. On Saturday night, PM will travel back to Shivamogga to fly to Delhi.

The PM was last in Karnataka for the inauguration of Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway in Mandya and the IIT campus in Dharwad.

The visit comes as the Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule for Assembly elections which are to be held before May.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Karnataka on Friday and he is scheduled to make another visit to the poll-bound state on Sunday.

This election is important for both the national parties--Congress and BJP--since they directly lock horns with each other in the polls. However, this is a three-faced election since JD(S) has a decent support base in Karnataka and both the national parties have had an alliance with JD(S) in the past. The lotus-shaped airport, named after Kuvempu, has been developed at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. The Passenger Terminal Building at the airport can handle 300 passengers per hour. The airport will improve connectivity and accessibility of Shivamogga and other neighbouring areas in the Malnad region, a government statement said.

India’s Battleground State

Electoral predictions in karnataka underscore the challenge modi and the bjp face to reaching a national supermajority..

  • Michael Kugelman

Battleground karnataka.

The biggest question about India’s ongoing national election is not if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win but rather by how much they will win. Modi’s deep popularity makes a third consecutive term very likely. But a few factors, including inflation and opposition to the BJP’s Hindu nationalism, could deprive the party of the supermajority that it seeks.

The southern state of Karnataka is a battleground between the BJP and the Indian National Congress party, its main political opposition. Congress won big in Karnataka’s state election last year, picking up nearly 43 percent of votes. This underscores the challenges the BJP alliance faces to winning 400 seats of the 543 in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament—which would be a nearly 50-seat increase from its 2019 result.

Twenty-eight Lok Sabha seats are up for grabs in Karnataka. Half of the state’s constituencies went to the polls on April 27, with the remaining 14 voting on Tuesday . Although the BJP has often struggled in southern India, it has enjoyed ample success in Karnataka, including leading the state government between 2018 and 2023. Electoral trends in Karnataka don’t always follow national patterns: For example, the BJP won state elections in 2004 and 2008 even though Congress won national elections in 2004 and 2009.

Congress won 135 of 224 seats in last year’s state election, an outcome that surprised many observers. However, preelection estimates from a Bengaluru-based news platform, Eedina, correctly predicted both the outcome and the seat total. In an interview with India’s Frontline published on Monday, Eedina’s head of research, H.V. Vasu, offered predictions about Karnataka’s vote this year that do not bode well for the BJP.

Drawing on recent polling data, Vasu said both the BJP and Congress have support bases in Karnataka of between 30 and 35 percent. But he said there is significant public support in the state for Congress’s recently announced social welfare pledges , which could give the party an edge. Vasu added that inflation registers as the most important issue for many voters and that they blame the BJP for it.

According to Vasu, Congress draws support from the poor and from women in Karnataka—two key groups the BJP has targeted in this year’s campaign. Congress’s inroads with poor voters suggest that one of its core national strategies —pushing for more support for lower-caste communities—is paying off in the state. The BJP rejects the affirmative action policies and related measures embraced by Congress .

While concerning for the BJP, these predictions do not guarantee a strong performance by Congress in Karnataka—especially given the state’s unpredictable electoral politics. But the state remains a flash point for broader national trends.

A hijab ban by the previous BJP state government remains in place, fueling a debate under the Congress government. Bengaluru, the state capital, has emerged as one of India’s biggest technology hubs in a country that has become a global IT power. The city also has a serious water crisis , underscoring India’s natural resource constraints.

The battle for Karnataka’s 28 seats has implications that extend well beyond the state.

What We’re Following

Pakistani farmers threaten protests. Farmer groups in Pakistan are threatening to stage nationwide protests later this week in response to falling wheat prices triggered by Islamabad’s decision to import wheat despite bumper harvests at home. In addition to their own income losses, farmers say importing wheat has worsened Pakistan’s foreign exchange crisis.

According to Pakistani media , the decision to import wheat came without the knowledge of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Wheat policy has been a struggle for Pakistani policymakers in the past . Pakistan’s government is reportedly working to resolve the crisis, including through a relief package meant to ease farmers’ burdens, although no formal announcements have been made.

If protests intensify, it could mushroom into Sharif’s first major political crisis since his government took office in March. Many of the farmers reside in the breadbasket province of Punjab, the main bastion of Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party. With the economy in a fragile state, Pakistan can’t afford any more food insecurity.

Next week, Sharif is scheduled to travel to Beijing , where part of his visit is expected to focus on seeking economic assistance. However, his counterparts will likely want to focus on addressing growing security risks for Chinese workers in Pakistan.

Nepal hosts Japan’s foreign minister. Last Sunday, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa visited Nepal, where she met with the country’s president, prime minister, and foreign minister. Japan has long been a top development partner for Nepal—and much of South Asia, especially Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Like the United States, Japan is also in a bitter competition with China, which likely caused some awkward moments during Kamikawa’s visit to Kathmandu. According to Nepalese press reports , she made unnamed references to China a few times and articulated Japan’s support for a “rules-based international order,” diplomatic code used by Washington and its allies to signal its concerns about Beijing’s power in the Indo-Pacific.

Nepal is formally nonaligned and aims to balance ties with China and the United States, avoiding getting dragged into great-power competition. Kamikawa’s comments won’t cause tensions in bilateral relations between Nepal and Japan; the two countries enjoy a broad-based partnership. But they serve as a reminder of the pressures faced by South Asian capitals amid intensifying geopolitical rivalries.

Pakistan marks difficult milestone. On Thursday, Pakistan will mark one year since political protesters attacked military targets and attempted to besiege the army headquarters building in Rawalpindi. The violence came in response to the arrest of popular opposition leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. It prompted the Pakistani state to implement one of its harshest crackdowns against the political opposition in years.

Sharif, the current prime minister, has compared the May 9 attacks to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, underscoring just how traumatic the attacks were for the country’s powerful military. In a media briefing last June, a military spokesperson said , “The events of May 9 have proven that what enemies couldn’t do in 76 years, a bunch of miscreants and their facilitators did.”

One year on, the generals are back on the front foot. Khan remains behind bars, and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is not in power despite PTI-sponsored independents winning the most seats in the February national election; the ruling coalition is led by parties that are backed by the military. Yet there are still high levels of public unhappiness with the military, and Khan reportedly retains loyalty among its lower ranks.

Under the Radar

Rare civil unrest has bubbled up in the northern Afghan province of Badakhshan. Protests broke out this month over attempts by Taliban forces to destroy opium poppy production, with two people reportedly killed in clashes with the Taliban. On Wednesday, Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry reported an explosion targeting a police convoy involved in poppy eradication efforts.

Since retaking power in 2021, the Taliban have vowed to eradicate poppy cultivation, and they have largely succeeded, with significant reductions in production across much of the country between 2022 and 2023. Badakhshan, however, is an outlier, experiencing increases in poppy production during that period.

The Taliban have failed to establish alternative livelihoods for poppy farmers, a major problem in a country with few healthy economic sectors. The angry protests in Badakhshan suggest that  local communities don’t want to face the hardships of poppy farmers elsewhere in the country. But they may also suggest tensions between Tajiks, the dominant ethnic group in the province, and the Pashtun-dominated Taliban.

PM Modi asks Karnataka to ditch Congress for its ‘perverted' sense of vote bank politics

Prime minister modi urged karnataka to reject congress for ‘vote bank politics’. he criticised congress for shedding tears over terrorists' deaths, citing an incident in delhi. additionally, he appealed for support for party nominees during the sirsi rally..

Lok Sabha polls 2024: Attacking the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of taking help of banned PFI -- the anti-national organisation that supported terrorism in the state. (PTI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a campaign rally in Karnataka's Sirsi on Sunday, April 28, asked the people of Karnataka to reject the Congress party for what he termed its “perverted sense of vote bank politics."

He targeted Congress leaders for initially suspecting the Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe blast case as a “gas cylinder" blast. Additionally, he accused the grand old party of taking support from the banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), known for its involvement in terrorism in the state.

“The way Congress has taken the help of PFI for the vote bank encourages them. The track record of Congress is of shedding tears on the killing of terrorists, you all must remember when such an incident took place in Delhi, a leader of Congress was shedding tears that why a terrorist was killed," ANI quoted PM Modi from his election rally in Karnataka's Sirsi.

During the rally, Modi asked the people to vote in large numbers for the party candidates Vishveshwara Hegde and Prahlad Joshi.

Modi's remarks follow the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) expressing support for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the ongoing Lok Sabha 2024 elections.

SDPI is infamous for its links with the PFI and is widely known as the political outfit of the banned terrorist organisation, reported ANI . In 2022, the organisation was declared an ‘unlawful association’ by the Union Home Ministry.

Apart from targeting the Congress for Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe blast, PM Modi also accused Rahul Gandi of insulting India's rajas and maharajas. He questioned Gandhi's silence on the atrocities committed by nawabs, nizams, sultans and badshahs to please his voters.

Congress promoting ‘mindset dangerous to an entire country’: PM Modi

While addressing the rally, PM Modi said that Congress is promoting a mindset dangerous to Karnataka and the entire nation. While criticising the rampant crime incidents and the recent bomb blast under the Congress government, PM Modi said, “Crime and terror cannot be weighed on the scales of the vote bank, and cannot be seen through the perspective of the vote bank."

He added, “But Congress is neither ready nor willing to get rid of its cheap vote bank thinking." Continuing his attack on the party, PM Modi said that the Congress is “troubled" to see the BJP's government's resolve and dedication. In a direct jibe at the opposition parties, PM Modi claimed that several people want to weaken the Indian government to fulfil their own “ambitions".

He claimed that “the game of tum bhi kamao, main bhi kamaoon. tum bhi malamaal, main bhi malamaal " continued during the Congress government. The recent controversy over Sam Pitroda’s remark advocating inheritance tax also found mention in Modi's speech, where he claimed that the party had “planned to snatch people's property and divide it amongst its vote bank."

At 8 times in 4 months, PM Modi’s Karnataka visits set to be highest in a year

The longest gap between two visits was of 29 months, between january 2020 and june 2022, and the opposition has accused the pm of ignoring the state when it was in distress.

modi visit to karnataka today

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Karnataka on April 9 to launch an event to mark the golden jubilee of Project Tiger, it will be his eighth visit to the state in four months, the highest ever in a single year since he became prime minister in 2014.

Since January 2015, Modi has visited the state a total of 32 times. Almost 25 per cent of these visits have been in the election year as the ruling BJP finds itself on shaky grounds over its prospects of returning to power.

modi visit to karnataka today

Data accessed from Prime Minister of India’s website shows that the second-most Karnataka visits Modi made in a year were in 2018, also an election year. Six of the seven visits that year happened ahead of the elections. Five of these visits were “non-official”, meaning that he visited the state either after the model code of conduct took effect or to attend a BJP event. Modi participated in a campaign blitzkrieg just ahead of the polls as he came calling four times between May 1 and 9.

This year too Modi will be the BJP’s star campaigner and his visits are expected to cross the double digit mark. The prime minister’s visits this year have been related to the inaugurations of a slew of projects many of which the Congress alleges are incomplete. His first visit in 2023 was on January 12, when he inaugurated the 26th National Youth Festival at Hubballi. The second came a week later, on January 19, to Yadgir and Kalaburagi to distribute title deeds for the Banjara community. The third visit was on February 6 for the inauguration of the Indian Energy Week at Bengaluru and the fourth on February 13 for the launch of Aero India 2023. The fifth visit was on February 27 to inaugurate Shivamogga Airport while the sixth was on March 12 for the inauguration of the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway.

During his most recent and the seventh visit, on March 25, Modi inaugurated the Whitefield Metro Line and participated in a public gathering at Davangere, apart from other events.

Festive offer

Data also shows that Modi did not visit the state even once during the two waves of the Covid-19 pandemic, between March 2020 and June 2021. The longest gap between his two visits to Karnataka was of 29 months, between January 2, 2020 and June 20, 2022, according to the PMO portal.

The prime minister’s frequent visits to the poll-bound state have triggered a row, with the Opposition Congress alleging that crores of rupees of taxpayer money were being wasted.

Congress MP D K Suresh said that BJP leaders were looting crores of rupees during rallies attended by the prime minister. “The Kempegowda statue inaugurated near Bengaluru International Airport cost Rs 59 crore, whereas the expense for the inauguration programme was Rs 30 crore,” he alleged.

He further alleged that the government had claimed that Rs 12 crore were spent for erecting pandals for a Modi event and that Rs 1 cr was billed as water expenses.

The social media wings of the Congress and the JD(S) have used memes and short videos to criticise these visits while accusing Modi of ignoring the state when it was under distress during the devastating floods of 2019 and 2020 and the Covid pandemic.

LS Elections 2024: Priyanka Gandhi questions PM Modi on Karnataka's Prajwal Revanna ‘sex scandal’

Kalaburagi, Karnataka:. On 'obscene videos' case involving JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, Congress National General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra says, " A big thing has happened in Karnataka, a person who shared stage with PM Modi and for whom he asked votes, he (Prajwal Revanna) sexually assaulted 1000s of women. I want to ask what do PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have to say on this? Sometime ago, for 3 days I went to meet my daughter, PM and Home Minister said that I went abroad. They get to know when opposition leaders go somewhere they get to know but when such monsters leave the country they wouldn't get to know? How can we believe this? They have information about everyone but somebody committed such a big crime and ran away from country right from under their nose and they are doing nothing?..."

modi visit to karnataka today

Karnataka Congress accuses PM Modi of silence in Prajwal Revanna sexual abuse case, says "no cooperation from Centre"

B engaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 9 (ANI): Karnataka Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his silence in the Prajwal Revanna sexual abuse case on Thursday.

In a post on X, Karnataka Congress said, "Our government had issued a blue corner notice against Prajwal and sought the cooperation of Interpol. But the arrest of Prajwal abroad has not received any positive cooperation from the central government till now."

"The Ministry of External Affairs is silent. This makes it clear himself is standing up for Prajwal," the post further reads.

Meanwhile, JDS leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said a memorandum will be handed over to the Governor over the SIT investigation at 3 pm on Thursday.

"We have planned to give a memorandum to the governor alleging the SIT investigation today at 3 pm. We don't have any hope in SIT investigation," the former CM said.

"Many Vokkaliga leaders including Ramalinga Reddy, Cheluvaraya swami, Krishna Bhyregowda all ministers are standing with the government over the SIT investigation, this is what they do, they bring Vokkaliga leaders to fight against me," he said.

"As per my information they have brought the family of the victims, the kidnapped lady, why haven't they produced before the court, why have they been kept in some guest house, did they bring her from the house, where was she brought from, where is she now, why can't SIT give information about her appearance before the magistrate," Kumaraswamy said.

Commenting on Karnataka MLA HD Revanna 's arrest, he said, "What's the allegation on Karnataka MLA HD Revanna , why haven't they bring her in front of the court, their intention is nothing but keeping HD Revanna into jail for three days."

On DK Shivakumar's allegation that HD Kumar Swamy is behind the release of Prajwal Revanna pen drives, he said, "Yes. I am the producer, I'm the director, I'm the actor and everything. These kind of stories came in movies, say something else. DK Shivakumar alleges that I'm behind all these episodes. Let him say. Whatever he wants, I'll answer at the right time."

HD Revanna and his son, Prajwal Revanna are facing a probe by a Special Investigative Team (SIT), constituted by the Karnataka government, over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in their household.

HD Revanna is under Special Investigation Team (SIT) custody till May 8 in a kidnapping case linked to the "obscene video case", while Prajwal Revanna has fled to another country. (ANI)
